Great table side guacamole and a fantastic Mai Tai

Good place if you are staying at the Hilton, but I'm not sure it's worth driving and paying for parking if you are outside the resort. Table side guac was yummy. My husband had the fish tacos, which were great. My tiki tacos were decent. Food is pricey, but about on par with surrounding stuff. Margaritas are $10-12 and are pretty small. Staff is nice. Just ok overall.

This place is only good for convenience if you are starving...Hotel managers and restaurant owners...please take note. You want people to come to your restaurant....not vice versa.

Avoid the nachos, not sure what kind of cheese is on the extra salty chips!

I love this place. It was close to our room, the staff were friendly and the food good. The table side guacamole is amazing. All the complaints I read were invalid in my case. This is a great place to have a drink, snack, and hang out with friends and other guests. We had nothing but positive encounters and a blast when here.

Of all the restaurants we tried at the waikoloa Hilton this was our favorite. Besides being the only one with flavorful and fresh food it was also the only one with decent service. I hate to write a good review by downgrading everything else around but we were quite disappointed generally with food at the Hilton. As for this restaurant we loved the table side guacamole. The quesadillas with Huli huli chicken were yummy. My husband could have eaten three plates of the taquitos which we're fabulous though small portion. I loved the tiki tiki tacos though they were small too. And the tuna chalupas were really yummy too. Another yum was the mango margarita. And a super special callout to our server Bridget! She was helpful and knowledgeable and delightful! We'd definitely return here preferably on a night when Bridget is working.

The drinks are served in plastic glasses. The $10 basic margarita has no tequila flavor. I ordered a shot for $10 to make it taste like a $5 drink. The guacamole was decent. Table side mix. The beef nachos were covered in cheese whiz! I believe they were $16. The bill for the margarita and shot, 1 other margarita, 2 beers, guacamole, and nachos was $80. Chipotle would be better food for a quarter of the entree cost. Unless you want a beer and the guacamole, AVOID the dissapointment. Too bad really. For the price, they could kick it up, use some glass, make a decent drink and real cheese. Then, it might be worth the visit. I've eaten at all the resteraunts at the Hilton over the last 20 years and this Cantina is way off their usually decent mark.

We stopped by for a light snack at the Boat Landing Canina during our stay at the Hilton Waikoloa resort. Mr. GDS was craving some guacamole. I ordered a happy hour margarita and Mr. GDS ordered a virgin margarita since he doesn't drink. HH included chips and "salsa". We also ordered double table side guacamole (basically 2 avocados instead of 1). The good: Service was good. The waitress was friendly and made sure that Mr. GDS' virgn margarita was charged the same as my HH margarita. It is hard to mess up tableside guacamole and it was good. It was casual so you could wear your swim suit and cover-up. The bad: Chips and salsa were so bad that we laughed. The "salsa" was some chopped tomatoe and onion in a 1 oz plastic container. The chips were not cooked all the way through and were rubbery. We are in Hawaii not TX so we didn't expect much. The ugly: This is a problem that I encountered at all of the restaurants in the Hilton Waikoloa resort. There is little if any alcohol in any of the tropical drinks. It really affected the taste of the margarita. The drink tasted like frozen sour lime juice. I couldn't finish the drink. Mr. GDS had some strawberry added to his drink and it was better. All-in-all, I would skip the Boat Landing Cantina.

I enjoyed fish tacos from this place. It's casual and convenient for a quick bite after a long day at the pool.

Loved the food. . My husband and i both had nachos, he had pork added and I had no meat. Next time I will add the pork, so delicious.

Worst Mexican food we've ever had. No flavor, very small portions, waitress was indifferent and our tacos, burrito, rice and beans came out cold and dry. Sent it back and it all came out cold again. The waitress seemed annoyed and sent out the chef. He assured us it was all made to order and couldn't be cold. We assured him it was, and that surely the beans and rice are not made individually, rather most likely made in batches and kept in a pot, but clearly not kept at the right temperature. Regardless, we didn't feel comfortable eating any of it and chancing food poisoning on vacation. The waitress said no one else has complained (although other Yelp reviews prove otherwise), but flustered, she said she'd take the food off the bill and just charge is for our drinks. Meanwhile the chef offered to replace our meals with anything else free of charge. But by this time we just wanted to leave. Having said that we have had excellent service and meals at several of the other Hilton restaurants at the resort!

The "nachos" tasted of rubbery pre-mixed cheese and regret. I would prefer Taco Bell even if the Boat Landing nachos didn't cost $16. The Hilton Waikaloa is a nice hotel, but you're better off leaving the property to get food.

  • John G.

We had the chicken and pork tacos. A bit pricey for what we got but the food was good for Hawaii Mexican. Taco's were very meaty but the portions of beans and rice was small. And remember chips and salsa are extra. Enjoy!

Don't waste your time or money! Lackluster service, sub par food and little to no ambiance. We were staying at the Marriott a couple doors down and decided to check out the Hilton's restaurants for dinner one night to change things up. We should have just stuck with the Marriott's restaurant, which was 10x better. We ordered chips and salsa as an app and the chips tasted stale and the salsa right out of the jar. The fish tacos weren't much better - they came with a spoonful (yes, spoonful) of dark unappetizing refried beans and Spanish rice all for $18.

This was definitely my favorite dining outlet at the Hilton Waikoloa complex. If you coming from off property, don't bother because it's too much of a hike but if you are staying in ocean tower, boat landing is the best spot for cocktails. Visit Eddie the bartender who is a sweetheart and never forgets your drink. I can't comment on the food but I definitely loved the vibe here.

  • Rhonda W.

Surprised the reviews are that bad .. everything in Hawaii is expensive plus you pay for the convenience of not having to leave the resort to get a bit to eat. Was this the best meal of our life or this trip ... well no. but it was fast and ok. Had a couple drinks and hoped on the boat to head back to our room. Very please do not have to go find something after running around the island snorkeling all day.

We stayed at the Hilton resort and I have to say most of the restaurants we visited were not that great. Venture and eat from local restaurants - you won't regret. We decided to stop here and eat a late night dinner since we were out sightseeing and had a late lunch. First, they weren't too busy and service was super slow. It took over 10 minutes before a server even notice us and then said they were busy for us to pick any table we wanted. After sitting, we ended up waiting another good 10 minutes before they came back over to see what drinks we wanted. Chips and salsa do not come with your meal. They charge extra. Chips were great, but salsa is terrible. If you even call it that. Fish tacos were maybe a 2 star. Nothing like the fish tacos that I had at other locations on the island. Plus, everything is very overpriced, even if you have a Hilton coupon.

Yes, this place is obscenely expensive for what you get but everything at this hotel is so...get over it. Food was good and our server was good so I can't complain. We had kahlua pig nachos, two fish tacos, a kids quesadilla, and water. $46 (yes, anywhere else you're looking at about $20 for that). Decent place if you're staying at the hotel to pop in for a quick bite.

Only the second worst mexican food I have ever had! If you don't mind bad service, being drowned by gas fumes, and salsa that tastes like marinara sauce, then this place is for you! However if you have more than three brain cells and/or have standards like me, avoid this place like an American doctor in Africa not wanting Ebola

  • Michelle G.

We ordered the Kalua pork nachos and the huli huli chicken quesadilla. The nachos were excellent, crispy chips, awesome tasting meat, cheesy, and plenty of sour cream. However, I asked for them without bean and it had some bean paste in the bottom. I'm not sure if they do that to hold the nachos together? Turned me off slightly, but the meat was so good it was worth it! The chicken quesadilla was completely lacking. It was soggy and didn't have great flavor. The chicken was very smokey for huli huli chicken, I thought! Service was good, no complaints there. There were no birds as previously mentioned in some reviews.

Day two of our Hawaii trip and another bad review for a Hilton resort restaurant. I ended up asking my husband if he was interested in getting a drink with me. Since the cantina is right below us, we decided to go there. We called the front desk to make sure it was still open. They said yes for another 20 minutes. We got down there with 15 minutes to spare. We asked the bartender if we could sit and have a drink but he said no, he was closing up. I told him that I asked the front desk for the hours but it didn't matter. Apparently the rule is if you don't have a customer for 40 minutes you can close early!

This place is horrible, embarrassment to Hilton. From CA, lived in both Oregon and Iowa for 15 years, this is the worst excuse for anything Hispanic in my experience. Understaffed and bad food at $160 for a family of six...go to the food court at Queen's and u will save time, frustration and calories. Del Taco is a two-star step up. HORRIBLE.

  • N S.

I recommend the tableside guacomole. It's a nice size portion and very good. Had good service each time we went. The pork nachos were kinda strange. Didn't seem like a good match for nachos, but not horrible. The cheese was not your regular shredded and melted cheddar...maybe canned, i don't know. The tropical drinks are tasty and I don't believe they are made with much alcohol which was fine with us. It is pricey but it's no different than all the other restaurants at the resort. Pleasant atmosphere too.

GROSS!!!! Came here and ordered a beer and fish tacos. Tacos were so gross and fishy smelling, like someone fished in the sea and then put that dead uncooked unwashed fish in a taco and tried to feed it to me. It was soooooooo disgusting, I couldn't have it on my table and sent it back. Additionally the service is bad here, actually to be honest there is no service, you pick up your own menus and if a waitress pays attention to you you can order.

We ate here a couple of times during our vacation at the Hilton because it was very close to our room and convenient. The food was decent for the most part and not very expensive. The chopped taco salad and table-made guac were both really good, but the chips, salsa, burrito, and quesadilla were only okay. Friendly servers and the stuff came out pretty quickly. I was a little surprised that when we walked by on Cinco de Mayo they had some cheap lounge act playing "I left my heart in San Francisco" and didn't even have any happy hour specials to celebrate. Kinda weird for a Mexican restaurant.

Hilton should be embarrassed to have this place as part of their property. I don't expect amazing Mexican food in Hawaii, but when I'm paying the prices that I paid tonight, I should at least get good service. Margaritas, guac, and nachos were all average. Ceviche was a little less than average. Our server was inattentive and unprofessional. From not timing our drinks and food orders well to dropping a fork on my husband without batting an eye to asking how things are in drive by fashion, her service was laughable. I'm sure the only reason this place is open is because hotel patrons have to drive for 30 min to get to a town where there's any real competition.

The location is certainly convenient if you are staying in the ocean tower, but service is pretty rotten. Guacamole is pretty good if you can get some green avocados. We had brown ones and asked if they could use fresh ones. We were told no by the sour waitress... Ceviche was pretty good, chips were sometimes stale, and the taquitos were tiny.

Not bad...close to our room which was great cause we checked in at dinner time and didn't want to tromp around lookin for a quick bite. Think my husband got a burrito...wasn't memorable...I got the salad without protein, but it had chicken on it when it came...no biggie. Pretty tasty and huge. They weren't playing Mexican music ...weird. I mentioned to the server it was my husbands birthday and he brought him a comped dessert. No candle....no singing...guess they don't often do birthdays at that restaurant. It was caramel cooked bananas over icecream...bananas tasted burnt....not very good...we only ate half.

Nice place with good atmosphere.. Looking for something simple and easy and it was. Pork Tacos were ok.. Tons of pork that was juicy and tender. No real taco flavor though.. Black beans and rice were ok too..

Gosh I was really hoping for better service and better food. Being that we could see this restaurant from our hotel room and it looked fairly decent we thought we would give it a try since we were hungry. First off, our waitress definitely did not like her job. She couldn't be bothered with her tables and her sloth-like movements were very obvious to many of us. After we ordered she delivered salsa and chips pretty much the same time as we got our meal. We ordered a couple of simple dishes and it was just that. Don't expect anything wonderful. Its plain A-ok. The ratings from fellow yelpers are spot on- which is why I always turn to yelp! Just forgot to check yelp before we went here. Oh well....

Food was OK! I was a bit disappointed with the fish Taco's as I'm sure there are other places on Big Island that do it a lot better!

Awesome food at a great price considering resort location. Had 2 Chicken Tacos with rice and beans or $13.00. Steak tacos were similarly priced. Quesadillas were only $9. Open atmosphere that was right at the boat landing. Very nice. Highly recommend this spot.

I used to eat here regularly, so when I had guests from out of town I brought them here. I promised them we would enjoy some good Mexican food. Boy were we disappointed!! They changed the menu. The really nice server told us they had a new manager "from the mainland" and changed the menu. They took off ALL burritos (they only have tacos and one pathetic salad - not even a taco salad!) and took off all items with Huli Huli Chicken and Kalua Pork. We had to settle on steak tacos ($19) and fish tacos ($17). THEY WERE SO SMALL and had a tiny portion of beans and a matching size of rice. What a rip off. The table side guacamole was good - but over priced at $19. The management has let this place go to the dogs (or stray cats that roamed by our feet all night). The prices went up, service went down (had to constantly ask for refills) and food went way down. Won't recommend this place to anyone anymore. So sad.

This bar was right at Ocean Tower, where we were staying. Eddie will hook you up! Low key and convenient, never crowded! Aqua fresca was choice!

  • Mike F.

$16 for a burrito that's the size of a $1.99 Taco Bell bean and cheese burrito was ridiculous! BUT with that said, it wasn't bad. Salsa was good. Service was on Hawaiian time so don't expect speedy service

  • Jeff W.

For this high-end resort, this place needs an overhaul. Food wasn't bad, but kids (keiki) meals of chips with basic nacho sauce for $6, doesn't cut it. Drinks were ok, service moderate.

First night at the resort went here to get something quick and without spending too much on food. The outside sitting is nice and our waitress was very friendly, but had too many tables to serve. Drinks were mediocre. I had a skinny margarita, which was skinny on liquor and taste. My wife order the special margarita of the night. The first one was blended, but we asked on the rocks. The second tasted like cough syrup. Again, the waitress was nice about it and did not charge us for it. The guacamole was good and our waitress made it fresh at the table. She even got my daughter to help. The food was mediocre. The fist tacos were fine, but the tortillas that came with them were generic and not warm. Nothing extraordinary given the price. If you are from California or Texas and used to good food, you will be disappointed. It is Hawaii after all, but I would expect Hilton to up their game.

    (2)
  • Stacey M.

It maybe the easy place to eat after a day of fun, but you should pass. The food was not any better than Taco Bell. The drinks were weak, the service slow, the bill way too high for what we received.

Came here for Happy Hour while on our honeymoon last month. We had ordered some food to go a few days before, and it was great! We came back for the nachos, (this time just as a snack to split), but stayed for Gary! The outdoor bar has such a great island feel. We were lucky enough to be served by Gary, who is really great! He was fun to talk to and made an extra effort to make sure we were enjoying ourselves! Maybe we just got lucky with our service and food (we did sit at the bar) but everything was great, and I feel like some of these other ratings are a bit unfair. I will tell you one thing, I sure wish I were there now with a beer in hand :)

  • Stephanie H.

The guacamole was the only memorable part of our meal at the Boat Landing Cantina. It was delicious, but overpriced. I ordered a cheese quesadilla and my hubby ordered pork nachos. Quesadilla was greasy and wasn't worth $8. Hubby's nachos were okay, by they used a cheese similar to canned cheese or Velveeta. Go for the guac for an afternoon snack....that's all I would recommend.

Hit and miss. We ate and drank there several times during a 10 day stay at the Hilton Waikoloa and some of the people and service was great and others should not be in the service business. Overall, all of the restaurants at this resort are way over priced and nothing special in quality.

    (3)
  • Josh B.

If you stay at the Hilton Waikoloa, you will eat here - probably - if you stay at Ocean tower and need a quick bite or drink at a the bar. This is the Mexican restaurant, if you will, and it's not better than Taco Bell. This is my least favorite place to eat at HWV. The WORST PART is that the boat fumes from the hotel boat service absolutely fumigate the tables and destroy the meal, everytime the boat pulls up. Seriously this location needs a redo desperately.

  • Rachel W.

My family and I stopped in out of convenience because it's located right near our rooms. I saw some lousy reviews on here, but we were pretty tired and very hungry so we decided to chance it anyway. Needless to say, everyone was pretty spot on about this place. The drinks were decent and the server was friendly, but the food was overall disappointing. I got some fried fish tacos, and my family got nachos, quesadillas, guacamole... All pretty boring. Perhaps I'm a bit harsh on Mexican food places being a half-Mexican gal from Southern California, but the tacos were tasteless and everything was pretty greasy and bland. The guacamole was the only semi-redeeming factor, but even the chips were stale. My advice would be to take your business elsewhere (where the food is actually tasty).

    (1)
  • Scott G.

Its not so bad, but the menu could use a couple solid, easy to make mexican classics, Queso, Fajitas, beef or chicken taco for people who just want a quick bite. As with everthing here, totally overpriced.... im sure if they had a better happy hour they would kill it even in the slow season.

They use Cheese Whiz on their nachos!! Pretty much says it all...

Yikes. Nasty nachos. mangled margaritas, Slow server. Big Bill. Trapped in Hilton Waikoloa resort and starving (as usual). Non-resort restaurants were a hotel shuttle/boat ride then a car ride away. We decided to walk next door to the resort pizza place listed in the resort book. Ummm... it didn't exist. So we kept walking and found ourselves at the Boat Landing Cantina. It's in a cool location - nicely landscaped, open hotel courtyard where the hotel boat shuttle landed. The bar was filled with tipsy little huddles of conventioneers who had evidently just closed down an open bar at their meeting. They were noisy, everyone knew everyone, and they were bunching up tables. We were Not In The Mood. But, again: starving. Talked my husband into staying anyway. Bottom Line: Service slow. $16-ish "Best-margarita-in-the-resort" was a tiny glass with lots of ice, and watery mix. Not sure there was any tequila in there. Taquitos were skimpy but adequate. My husband said the nachos were nasty. And he's really easy to please when he's hungry. We didn't stay for a second anything. VERY DISAPPOINTING.

Pretty awesome set up, all by itself and not to many people around.

    (4)
  • Dwayne Y.

I started with a margarita which was so sour I couldn't even finish it. Next I ordered Ceviche which was good, but the portion was very small. For $16 I expected more than an appetizer portion. We also got a cheese quesadilla. The tortilla was good, not soggy or greasy, but surprised it was served by itself, without sour cream or guacamole to dip it in. For dessert we got the fried plantain chocolate banana. It was really good. That was my favorite part of the whole meal. The service was super slow. Every aspect of our lunch was dragged out. This place has the potential to be great. They need new management.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
