Loved it! Comfortable, well-located, and affordable place to stay on the north side of Maui near Paia. This isn't a party scene or hotel...more like your friend's (super clean) house where you happen to be staying. Other guests were respectful/considerate types, late 20s to early 50s couples/etc, mostly folks who enjoyed a beverage or two on the porch at night but still got out the door nice and early for sunrise on the crater, etc. Haley (the innkeeper) made us feel at home, and the vibe was just right for those of us trying to escape the usual tourist traps. Highlights: -Clean, well-appointed rooms -Great "serve yourself" breakfast options (fruit, eggs, milk, etc)...fresh papaya was delicious -Mana Grocery (5 minutes away in Paia) is a world class grocery store. 70% local fruits and veggies? Yes please! Great options for preparing a big dinner back at the Inn or getting snacks on the go. -Hana Highway (incredible) is a right turn out the front door, and easy access to other sights (beaches, crater drive, mountain biking/hiking) -Lots of guidebooks and other resources in the library -Outdoor shower was awesome!

Hayley was the innkeeper during my stay. My first b&b experience and I was pleasantly surprised! Location - just outside of Paia. Traffic through there can get backed up a bit due to the 1 traffic light. Close to Ho'okipa which is good if you're a windsurfer. Pros - free wifi, there's a printer in-house, washer/dryer available, ironing board and iron available, DIY breakfast, free parking, outdoor showers available. Very eco-friendly place from what I could see. Cons - right on Hana Hwy so yeah there's some noise from that, floorboards are a bit creaky, walls thin-ish. Earplugs are offered for that. Misc - Quiet hours are 10pm-8am, Maui was pretty dead after 8pm anyways. All together I liked it. It was like staying at a friend's house!

Short version: Ants and fruit flies, make your own breakfast, no regular housekeeping in the room, kitchen trash/recycling was never taken out during a four-night stay, and the innkeeper was only accessible by phone. This isn't a Bed and Breakfast, it's a rental house with a poorly-stocked fridge. I don't know who "Julie" is in the earlier review that we fell for, but we dealt with "Maile". Or at least that's the name on the letter we found taped to the door when we arrived, along with a number to call if there were any problems. We're accustomed to talking with B&B innkeepers over breakfast, discussing what there is to do in town, stuff like that. What we aren't accustomed to (and had in the case of the Kuau Inn) are ants and fruit flies throughout the house, breakfasts that consist of serve-yourself store-bought muffins and a carton of eggs, and a room that doesn't lock from the outside. The previous occupant's "call me if you need anything" letter was still in our room when we got there, too, so that says a lot about the lack of housekeeping between guests. On the plus side, the place is pretty well situated close to Paia and between the two sides of the island, so you're only a short drive from great views and experiences. And the washer/dryer access came in handy, too. We won't be returning. This was the first stop of our honeymoon and we should have stuck with our first inclination to leave when we arrived at a dark, empty, dirty, and buggy house with a room that still had the previous occupant's paperwork, no A/C or fan, and no key for our room. At 0915 on the last morning, an alarm started ringing behind a locked door that had been unused for the duration of our stay, too. Do yourself a favor and avoid this mis-named rental house.

Julie, your place was a steal. The highlights: - his/her outdoor showers - walking distance to town, Pa'ia's killer, so were the surfers, Flatbread pizza, and Owen Wilson sightings - comfy, clean bedroom upstairs - do-it-yourself breakfast: 2-egg bagel sandwich, cream cheese bagel, organic lemonade, strawberry yogurt, and a banana. YUM! I'm so glad you were able to accommodate me on Valentines day. with my Valentine. :) Hope to see you again soon.

There are other places to stay on majestic Maui, I am certain however, there are no other places as magical as the Kuau Inn, in Paia. A simple B&B with all the charming amenities and without the hassle. You feel at home here. The fridge is stocked with the basics and there's a lovely grocery in Paia for specific dietary needs/wants steeped with tasty hops and local organics. We stayed here for 8 days, renting (3) rooms for our cycling and surfing legends. One room in the front corner (right) has a private bath room, the rest share a community bathroom, all very clean and private enough. The rooms upstairs are delightful and have lovely views, also sharing a community bathroom upstairs. Nice open LR and large kitchen that exits to an outdoor seating area with large table for meals and drinks and organic citrus..There is also an amazing outdoor shower! The inn is a very short walk to HOokipa beach where you can surf/windsurf like mad, open water swim; ~10 minute walk to downtown Paia - definitely a locals town which is refreshing and want to escape the maddening tourism that is South shore. You need a car (we did a jeep wrangler) and the Road to Hana is out the door and to the right. Lot's of amazing activities very close to the inn - Haleakala volcano, Makawao forrest (mtb), snorkeling and hikes galore. So many great things to say. Lastly, the inn is managed by a lovely couple, Haley and Ryan. They are fine hosts, providing great knowledge of the locals, lovely advice and always with a smile. I miss those two more than the inn itself! If you're a resort lounger, this may not be the place for you. If you love B&B experiences, I cannot give the Kuau Inn a more glowing recommendation. Simple charming and made me feel like I was at home. I will return, leave my key out.
