I really appreciate that the tiny town of Pahoa boasts a locally owned coffee shop. I've been here a handful of times, usually to pick up a treat before driving back to Kona. I popped in today to get an iced mocha and realized my experience is always a bit underwhelming. I would say nothing horrible about this cafe but also nothing spectacular. Drinks are costly and with all the creative people living in Puna, I'm surprised they serve Tazo Chai, over a local brew.
I love coming here because of the genuine Aloha hospitality and love poured into their products! Locally sourced coffee, coconut or almond milk options and the great service had me, but I'll keep coming back because Charlene & her staff have treated me like family since I first started coming. Mahalo for all of the generosity. Many blessings and luck to you on your journeys. xx :)
Great spot! So nice awesome and helpful. Needed to print a couple things got so much aloha and everything done! Excellent coffee and homebaked goods. :) stop here for sure!

Mike’s New York Pizzeria

We were staying in Hawaiian Paradise Park. Called in the order. Took 20 minutes to drive there and the pies were ready. Great flavors - fresh ingredients. Yummy!!
A slice of NY right in the middle of a small town on an Island in the Pacific. On this strip of restaurant row (there are like 5 or 6 of them) Mike's is the new kid on the block. Only open 4 months and while I was there, a few locals were popping their head in to take a look. Apparently the pizza place a few doors down has a lot more history in the area, so it might take a while for people to give Mike's a try. But they will and they will get a good pie made with love and good quality ingredients. This is an open fire pizza oven, but Mike isn't using wood or anything that will char up the pizza. I kind of missed that, but that's just a personal taste. I've read many reviews of famous NY pizza places that complain it has a burnt taste. Mike's doesn't have any burnt taste to it, just a nice thin crust that cooks quickly in an open fire oven. The sauce had a good oregano flavor to it and was well covered in Mozzarella. I like that you are given a cup of freshly grated romano cheese to add, and Mike was more than happy to give us a second cup of it. For toppings we went with pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, and onion. The pepperoni had a nice spice to it and was good quality. The sausage was on the mild side, but still had a nice flavor to it and was small chunks rather than the thin sliced kind you see on some NY pies. The mushrooms and onions were excellent and made me wish I got a few more veggie toppings. They were sliced razor blade thin and thus cooked nicely on the pie. I always feel this is important with thin crust pizza. When you leave the veggies on the chunky side, they have way too much crunch to them. Plus it gets too heavy on the thin crust and your pizza collapses. These were red onions, which can be strong if they don't cook a bit. They were perfect. Considering the slightly vegetarian looking characters that hang around Pahoa, a good veggie pie will really be good for business. yelp.com/biz_photos/E_P2… One last bit of advice - the artsy menu is an assault on your retinas for sure. Just stand a few feet back, stare at the menu, and allow your eyes to lose focus. Do not blink. After about 30 seconds look at the back of your hand, blink 7 times, and you will see a hidden image. The image is different for everybody. If you don't see it, walk down the street and find someone that can maybe sell you something to help you see it. If after smoking that, and you still don't see it? Well at least you know where to go to get some good pizza for your munchies. yelp.com/biz_photos/E_P2… Mike's has slices and lunch specials as well as whole pies in 4 different sizes (10", 14", 16", 18")
We were remarking just how many great meals we had in the little town of Pohoa and this was no exception. The pizza was to die for - perfect crust and delicious authentic toppings. Sadly we took ours to go and the lovely home made dressing for our salad spilled in the bag / it smelled terrific and I'm sure it was very good. The cannoli home made too , their own recipe and very good. Mike and especially his mom very personable and friendly.

Island Naturals Market

This is a great little small-town store. Even though it's part of a Big Island chain, this one feels like Pahoa. Grab some lunch here, sit outside next to the jungle garden, and enjoy the people-watching. You won't find a great diversity of ingredients here, but they stock pretty much what you'd expect at a natural foods store. They can run out of specific produce items by the end of the day, but check back tomorrow. They have a pretty nice beer selection. There's some anti-GMO propaganda to read as well. The hot buffet is small but good, especially for lunch. They have meat, fish, vegetarian, and vegan entrees, plus a small salad bar. There's also a tiny sandwich and smoothie bar in the back, which we haven't tried.
It's where I go for a good morning cup of coffee that is strong and fresh . The hot food bar there is excellent as we'll . The staff has always been helpful and friendly ! It's an interesting place to shop , as the cilantro there is colorful to say the very least.
Very good quality products. Some hard to find stuff can be found here, pretty fresh. Tasty hot bar - love the pastries! Good morning coffee, nice place to sit out front and eat, visit with others. Parking is easy. I'd shop there a whole lot more if the prices were better. It seems to be a fortune every time i go, so commodity items - milk, eggs, cheese, juices etc, I get elsewhere, but special items I will get at "the natch" High quality indeed.

Luquin’s Mexican Restaurant

Reviews:
We happened upon Luquin's as we were exploring this lava-threatened town of Pahoa and its funky stories and shops. It's an older place and could use some remodeling and reflooring but heck, when you have Kilaua Volcano breathing down your neck, why bother? We really enjoyed our breakfast here.....We had to wait until 10 am before we could drive the road to see the lava flow. An excellent use of our time having breakfast here. I had French Toast and it was generous and delicious. My partner had eggs and loved them. The service was great and it's obviously a favorite local hangout. I hope it's still here on our next trip back to the Big Island.
Nice little hang on the main strip. We got the: Deluxe burrito sub carnitas (awesome -- HUGE) 2 shrimp taco plate with beans and rice (delightful) The margs were too sweet, the service was pretty laid back - but the vibe was great. The food was great. I'd go back for sure.
Holy cow! Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had! If you're ever in the area, I would recommend this to anyone! I had the cheese enchilada with rice and beans as well as a piña colada. Everything was cooked fresh, sour cream was homemade, drink was phenomenal and the enchilada sauce was to die for! Wish I had one of these back home. Fantastic job to the cook and great service! This place definitely deserves 5 stars!!

Will i'll mark this off my list .....
This is L&L. It is decent food. It always take way too long. Prices are cheap. There are way better L&L locations. This just takes way too long for mediocre food.
Worst location ever. 2 year old tasting freezer meat and garlic shrimp salad that tasted like pure garlic on a bed of cabbage. Ended up walking out; throwing my entire mostly uneaten order in the trash can and eating at the black rock. This location is very bad for L&L's reputation and their franchise license should be yanked. This place has always been empty and I should've resisted my wife's desire to go and order there; dirty always empty place; and I love going to L&L normally.
