We have lived in Maui for nearly 25 years. As such, we have had the good fortune to work with Celebrations Catering for many years. They have catered everything from milestone birthdays and holiday parties to most recently, my wedding and post-wedding party on Maui. When it came time to plan our wedding, the one thing we all knew from the beginning was who we wanted to cater our celebration, and we couldn't be happier with our choice. If you have ever eaten at Haliimaile General Store on Maui, you know you are in for a treat as far as the food. But sometimes when you cater large events, even the best of restaurants struggle to get it right. At our wedding, we had a sit down dinner for 80 and at Bev's recommendation we did family style. I loved the idea and it suited our vision for the wedding perfectly. Each platter that came out was as good if not better than the last, and it gave our guests a lot of different tastes and options to choose from. The food was divine and there was something for everyone! At the post-wedding party a couple of days later, we went more casual with a barbeque and margarita bar. Casual? With these folks, a barbeque looks and tastes like a million bucks. Each station was amazing. Our guests are still raving about the food (and drinks) at both events. So the food was amazing but the service, professionalism and attention to detail that went into making it that way was equally as good! As the bride, I honestly can't imagine having pulled that week off without the guidance of Bev and especially Nicole. Nicole is simply amazing. She made the whole thing stress free and fun. Although she is clearly juggling a lot in her job, she was always available and made you feel like you were her only client! Her creativity, ideas, energy, and enthusiasm are endless. She was committed to working with us to create the vision and to help that fit into our budget. During the week of the wedding, I never had to worry because I knew Nicole and Bev had it all under control, and they did. Everything was seamless and beautiful, from start to finish. I can't imagine recommending anyone other than Celebrations Catering.
Celebration catered my wedding March 2013 and it was fantastic. My wife introduced me to Bev Gannon and her restaurants after we started dating and we couldn't have been more pleased with their services. I wasn't super involved in a lot of the wedding details but I love food. Customizing our menu for our wedding was a lot of fun and tasting much of the food and drinks at Hali'imaile General Store was also an amazing experience. We've been to a lot of weddings and usually felt the food is just okay. The food and drinks at our wedding were awesome. Celebration's team helped out with many of the last minute details for the wedding and allowed my wife to have a great stress free day. That meant everything to me as I wanted both of us, and our guests, to have relaxed/amazing day. Celebration made that happen and I would HIGHLY recommend them.
What can I say? After months of searching for a beautiful, private, and non-touristy location to get married, we found Celebrations Catering and Sugarhouse through Pacific Weddings Magazine and our event planner, Beth Helmstetter. It was one of the best decisions we made. Sugarhouse, a private estate house that resides on a historical sugar plantation, is a rare find and off the beaten tourist path. The location oozed rustic, vintage Hawaii with its beautiful, muted design and scenic surroundings that included views of the Haleakala mountains, the Pacific Ocean and the sugar cane fields. The estate house is grand but understated with the beautiful, vintage flooring and the lovely antiques and furniture. It's perfect. As for the catering service. They are detailed, customer friendly, flexible, efficient and a pleasure to work with. Our wedding meal was one of the best dinners I've had in my life, and our guests thoroughly enjoyed theirs as well. I will never forget how good the wasabi potato gratin tasted! YUM. In terms of pricing, this is very affordable considering the other options in Maui (e.g. wedding at Four Seasons, comparable luxury hotel or private estate). We were given all day access to Sugarhouse which is a rarity given how popular Maui is for a destination wedding.

"I like that you have rules and I like that you enforce them." These are the words written in the guestbook of Hale Ho'okipa Inn by the German couple who checked out a day before we did. Yes, there are rules--lots of them. And, yes, they are enforced. I have yet to write a negative review. I'd rather spend my time promoting positive experiences and great places than dwelling on the decisions that didn't go well. For Hale Ho'okipa Inn, I'm going to make an exception. I knew we were in trouble when the sign at the front door read, "No Shoes Allowed". This is a pet peeve of mine. When I'm paying good money to stay at a place, I want to choose when I take my shoes off. Having to take them off or put them on every time I come and go is not a duty I welcome. More than anything, I want a room to be convenient to live out of while I'm there. Hale Ho'okipa Inn was not. Thinking of staying here because of its proximity to Haleakala? Just know that there is the "procedure" for departing for a Haleakala sunrise experience too. You must park in a certain spot. (There is only one spot so hope you're the only one planning to go up in the morning.) You must take a shower the night before; don't even think about showering in the morning. And be prepared to lace up your hiking shoes outside by porch light. Remember, shoes are not allowed in the house. Showering the night before can also be an issue if you arrive back too late (since that is just as likely to wake up other guests), leaving anyone with a daily itinerary that has you arriving late and departing early with a bit of a dilemma. Snacks in the room? You guessed it--forbidden. We found this out after returning to the room one afternoon and sharing a few rice crackers. The cleaning lady knocked on our closed door explaining that she heard us eating. She demanded that we cease this activity immediately. Seriously. By this time we were counting the hours until we could check out. There is no doubt that some of the rules are dictated by the fact that the walls in Hale Ho'okipa Inn are paper thin. As a result, guests can hear everything everyone else is doing. The fact that the cleaning lady heard us chewing through a closed door is probably illustration enough, but this fact was reinforced one day while sitting in the bathroom. The couple in the next room happened to be having a conversation on the other side of the wall and I could hear everything they were saying as though I was on the other side of an open window. In fairness, there are people that love staying at Hale Ho'okipa. If you're a person, couple, or group that doesn't get up too early, returns to the room before dark, and doesn't mind all the rules, this might be a good match. The grounds are small but attractive and the inside of the house is clean and nicely kept. Still, for us, Hale Ho'okipa Inn proved to be such a bummer that it still casts a negative light on how we remember our experiences on Maui. My son lists Maui as his "least favorite island" and gives Hale Ho'okipa Inn as the reason why. In retrospect, we should have just checked out after the first night and written off the cost of the next two nights as the price of freedom. If you're thinking of staying in Makawao, I would suggest The Banyan Tree House as a good alternative. It was booked when I made the reservations for this trip, however we did stay here on an earlier trip. Its spacious grounds, large rooms, and positive vibe were everything that Hale Ho'okipa is not.
What a wonderful place -- a lovingly restored historic ranch house in a quiet residential neighborhood upcountry. The owner and her no. 2 were absolutely sweet and helpful. The place is charming, the breakfasts tasty and the other guests fun to chat with. And only a 15 minute drive from all the kiteboarding beaches. I'll be back.
The 4 and 5 Star reviews describe Hale Hookipa well, and it's even better once you arrive. It's an enjoyable reflection of Hawaiian culture and practices. My adult son and I just stayed there 3 nights and it was a true pleasure as our base for day hikes on Haleakala and trips to the beach. We started each morning with coffee and a stroll in the secluded, beautiful yard and then breakfast with Cherie and guests; a real treat. We've already shared news of this gem of an inn with other family members. Looking forward to returning.

We had dinner here three nights ago. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. The food was great; but, the service was very slow. There were seven of us (my siblings, husband, & sister-in-law) & that is why we didn't really say anything about the service. The server (Mitch) informed us that the owners were there w/a party of 10, so he seemed more focused on serving them. Still, we tipped 25%; but, I think it was because we were in the "holiday spirit". Lol. We all ordered drinks & all the girls got the lychee drink. It was pretty good. For dinner, I had the New York steak. It was tasty; but, there was a lot of fat on my cut. The caesar salad from the salad bar was excellent. My husband ordered the short ribs & it was huge! Normally, he doesn't like caesar salad, but this is the first time he ordered it & liked it. After we finished our entrees & the busser took our plates, we waited over 1/2 hour before another server came to tell us what desserts were available. I ordered the white chocolate raspberry cheesecake & my hubby the tiramisu. It was okay. My SIL ordered their signature sweet & salty dessert & loved it. My brothers ordered the creme brulee & said it was watery. Our reservation was at 6:30 & we finally left at 9 (quite a while). We joked that since this was a "family date night" we were okay about it; but, that it would've been nice to get better service/attention.
This place was very nice. (What a boring way to start a review, huh?) Well, it was. Delicious prime rib and filet mignon. A very fresh and tidy salad bar with chilled plates. And before we were seated we enjoyed an appetizer in the bar/lounge area. Outside, the place is set in a backdrop of downtown Makawao--barely urban, misty, green, and lush. But the decor inside is kind of upscale cowboy: dark interiors, leather chairs in the lounge, wood fixtures, carpeting, etc. My favorite part of this place though: the tearoom in the back! Yep, they offer tea service most days of the week--so this gave us the perfect opportunity to visit the place twice in 10 days. And the tea service was tasty and affordable. Prim and proper, too--without being stuffy.
The steak house is under new ownership and much improved. We live up the road from the restaurant and had been disappointed in the decline of the food and service over the past couple of years. We gave it another try and are happy to report we'll be regular customers once again. The steak I had was locally raised and the cheese polenta was fantastic! The prices are very fair for the quality and service and also in line with other restaurants on Maui. I spoke with someone yesterday who said the word's definitely out. She went there with her family the other night and people were waiting outside for a table. Haven't seen that much activity in years!

Fabulous sushi. Very very fresh and a great combination of ingredients. The presentation was superb. People that think the prices are expensive don't understand the price of sushi in Hawaii. Everything cost a little more now but this is worth it. I brought a party of three and we ate four rolls.three would've been enough. The rolls are large
With hit or miss customer service and a few overpriced menu items, I still find myself returning to Makawao Sushi. Maybe it's because of the slim pickings that the cowboy town has to offer after dark, but I can't deny there's a certain charm to this sushi/ice cream bar (open 'til 9pm). The sushi is decent, and the ice cream and coffee drinks don't disappoint (I like their iced americano on warm days). It's BYOB, and the Rodeo General Store's beer fridge is just a few doors down, making Makawao Sushi a convenient option for a low-key night on the town.
Despite a chilly afternoon spent at Haleakala National Park, I was in the mood for sushi when we headed back down. After searching for places on the way home, we headed to the cute town of Makawao. In addition to sushi, this rustic-looking establishment sells coffee, ice cream, sandwiches and other miscellaneous stuff. My experience with sushi in Hawaii is that it seems to be much more expensive and in general doesn't compare to what you can get on the mainland. That held true again, although the sushi here was better than any I've had in Hawaii so far. Our order included some NIGIRI (salmon, scallop and yellow), rolls (SPICY TUNA, SPICY YELLOWTAIL and VEGGIE MAKI) and the AHI POKE. And what do I mean by expensive? Well, the nigiri is around $5, but that's only per piece, not for an order of two pieces. You won't be able to eat here for less than $30, unless you're leaving hungry. At least you're supporting a small family-owned business. Closed on Tuesdays.

Now one of my favorite upcountry spots Friendly staff, fast service and $1.00 dole bananas Hoping they give you some sidewalk space
The only complaint I have is the sitting area. There's only 2 round tables in the center and 3 tiny tables next to the window. It's not a very welcoming feeling when you're actually in there like most Starbucks. I know it's a smaller Starbucks but ever since the did renovations, it's actually worst the sitting area got smaller. I live upcountry and I prefer going to Casanova Deli it's cozy and lots of different areas to sit.
This location is under new management and it shows. Major improvement in both quality and service. You can always tell when a store is run by someone who has a passion for it. Way to go!

Great, peaceful b&b. Kudos to Marty (the owner). Love the swings and hammock, fun things to do (salt water pool, ping pong, bounceless basketball, whirlpool if it is working) and the hot cocoa. Clean and optional fire pit available. Best part, apple bananas, fresh fruit trees to pick and enjoy (grapefruit was plentiful when visiting). Yoga studio is very nice.
Our cottage was the Ginger, the smallest unit; it was in a one story building that shared a wall with the office that shared a wall with another cottage. Marty was quite pleasant! The Ginger was simply decorated, clean in appearance, the bathroom was large and the bed was comfortable. The grounds were manicured with lots of tropical plants but the outdoor equipment, and furniture needed cleaning and updating. It wasok but not luxurious! The 3 stars are an adequate rating. We did leave before our stay was complete because the mosquitos were using me as food for the winter; I am sure I am alergic to them. My suggestion would be a fan needed to keep the air circulating.
Super great place to stay! Great location and owners. Away from the crowds but still close enough to the beaches and town.

I hadn't been here in years, but it's less than a mile from my home, so we had to try it. What a pleasant surprise! I got mahi with vegetables and mashed potatoes. I don't usually order mashed potatoes, but there's were heavenly. The ambiance and crowd can be a mix of biker/cowboy, but the staff are super and made us and our two-year-old daughter feel right at home.
Even though I can't eat here, it's still a good place to get a drink and listen to a live band. Plenty of room is left for dancing if you're so inclined. If you aren't gluten free like me, try a classic burger and fries, onion rings, or any of their other menu classics. My boyfriend has a burger and said that it wasn't too big, and was a solidly decent burger. The temperature in Makawao is so perfect, they leave the doors open to the fresh air during the day.
Fun atmosphere, bartender is also the waitress, but, she's fast. Food is yummy. Will be back!

This is some of the best gourmet pizza I've ever had! The pesto veggie is unbelievable! The team working there seemed to be having a great time, and that only improved the vibe and the taste. I felt I could taste the love in the pizza. Also, if you go, get one of their giant soft cookies. These things are no joke, and definitely some of the best I've ever had! I'd recommend this place to anyone!
Just needed a quick place to eat while in Makawao and saw the sign $4.99 for a pizza and salad lunch deal. I pulled in and checked it out and was surprised to see the different types of premium salads I could get with my pizza. 3 stars because all they had was pepperoni pizza at that time. Great deal nonetheless.
My coworkers and I decided to try out a new restaurant for lunch yesterday in the Makawao area. We decided on Pizza Fresh, which turned out to be this great little find that served us pretty "fresh" healthy dishes. I had the upcountry greens apple salad, which was quite tasty, although the vinaigrette dressing was a little on the salty side for me. My friend Sandy had a salad sandwich combo, which looked pretty tasty and my other coworker had a turkey wrap, which she just raved about. I think that this is a great place for people to pick up a bite to eat without feeling so weighed down. I think we will be back when in the area and in the mood for something light and healthy. This place has been around for many years. The food is ok, but tonight the service was the worst possible. There are many other places to eat upcountry, try those first. I'm sure their servers won't treat you like you're bothering them.
Disappointed! My family and I have been going to this place for about 6 months and we always get the upset waiter Chris. He doesn't seem to like his job at all. He was extremely rude tonight and we ended up walking out. What a shame, because the rest of the staff is great. Call ahead of time to find out who your waiter is. I know we will from now on. If it's Chris, Good Luck!
This place is the bomb, you won't find any better food and service. The loco moco is so ono, the best on Maui.
