Definitely worth checking out, Dane and his wife are serving up food that is spot on in a very pleasant, quaint setting. The mung bean ginger soup was great, perfectly light for a semi-warm day. Kale salad was bright and fresh. Collard greens and grits were plain and simple, but in a good way with the nostalgic taste of home cooking. If you show up at a slow time, you can expect a minor wait for your food as they spring to work getting everything cooked up fresh (to me, a very good thing).

On our fifth day on Kauai we were ready for some flavorful and healthy food that didn't break the bank. We usually eat really clean and also love gourmet food. Greenery Cafe is awesome! I had the special, ahi salad with vegan Caesar dressing on the side and my husband had the fried fish plate which was ahi so lightly fried with Cajun spices on it that it was clearly still super healthy. The side of cornbread was cake-like he said. I asked for a side of gluten free bread which tasted like dessert to me with jam on it...ahh. The coconut crush coffee was the surprise amazing bonus, we got ours unsweetened. Service was great and it's owned by a really friendly couple.

This is a hidden gem, don't be sidetracked by the location. Its behind a home, but that adds to the ambiance. Neina is super sweet and the food incredible and healthy. Will be back!!

Woah! This place is awesome! The best place we've eaten on our 2 week trip to Hawaii. The rosemary chicken wrap was so good, and full of fresh vegetables and herbs. My husband got the rosemary chicken plate with potatoe salad and cornbread. We also got the tea and cobbler. Everything was so good and healthy! The cornbread was amazing! If we hadn't found it on our last day here we would for sure have been back. One suggestion would be for clear signs with an arrow to show where to go exactly, which was behind the house.

After 6 hours on a flight and 1 hour waiting for our rental car we were starving after our arrival in Kauai. This hidden gem was the best welcome! Our family of five loved everything we tried: tofu curry, herbed chicken, grilled cheese sandwiches, and the berry and kale smoothies. Super local and super mellow. The owner and staff are wonderful. We were there for about 45 minutes and the place had a very steady stream of takeout customers. We enjoyed the back yard garden setting, and our 3 boys could run around, which was perfect after sitting on the plane all day.

Great spot. Fresh and healthy. Park in the front and go around back. Very cozy. Definitely a hidden gem. Way better than most of the tourist traps at the resorts.

Who knew that you could get great soul food in Hawaii? As a native Marylander, I give high marks to the collard greens and the sweet potatoes, both perfectly done. The kale salad also draws a rave. The staff were solicitous and kind. More outdoor seating would have completed things perfectly.

Who knew eating healthy taste so good ...very friendly and great service and right in Lihue

We were looking for lunch by the Lihue Airport and boy am I glad we found this little hidden gem. Owner Dayne is really welcoming and it feels almost like you're eating in a friend's backyard. The rosemary chicken wrap was delicious and light, and the sweet potatoes were unreal--not too sweet, light and decadent at the same time. The Thai basil mint iced tea is cold and refreshing. The preparation took a few minutes--well worth the wait, but definitely not fast food. Do yourself a favor and give this little spot a try.

I was no more than seven years old when my grandmother taught me the importance of humility and discretion. It was a strategy of surprising others, winning arguments, and most of all, being a respectful competitor. "Stop dancing," she cried, when I scored my first touchdown in a flag football league, staring at me with piercing eyes from the sidelines. "Win humble, lose humble." My grandmother must have imparted these virtues upon A Greenery Cafe, a cute eatery that is confidently different from the others in Lihue. In a quaint cottage tucked away behind a house that is home to a therapist's office, A Greenery Cafe is a clean establishment with outdoor seating in a lush, verdant flower and herb garden that also happens to provide the rosemary and basil used in some of their dishes. Further down and across the street is Tip Top Motel and Cafe, pompously looming over Akahi Street with its wonderful reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor. Yet, A Greenery Cafe sits unassumingly, churning out delicious salads, sandwiches, and fried Southern entrees. Kale salad, fried fish (battered in corn meal), rosemary chicken salad, and rosemary chicken sandwiches are on the menu, along with sides such as cornbread, black eyed peas, candied yams, and more are on their menu. Daily specials are coming soon. I had the rosemary chicken for my first visit to A Greenery Cafe. Tasty sandwich, all made with local ingredients (except chicken). Veggies are grown on organic Kauai farms or their own garden, and bread is from Passion Bakery in Wailua.

Delicious, healthy food prepared with aloha - love - conveniently close for a pick up to eat while waiting for your plane, or a post helicopter tour feast. Ahi wraps, black eyed peas, potato salad, yams, and coconut taro pudding - all delicious! What puts this place over the map is their spirit of Kama'aina - Hawaiian unity. After purchasing our pre flight dinner and heading to the airport, I got a text from Dale saying that they'd forgotten to pack our sides and would be happy to bring them to us at the rental car drop off. He was as good as his word! Can't beat such service. Mahalo! Garden Cafe has earned a special place in our hearts - let it earn one in yours today!

  • Jeanie S.

This was a pleasant place to stop for lunch on our way to the airport - healthy, delicious and tables outdoor under the shade. However, if you are in a hurry this would not be your best choice.

Cute little outdoor place in the back house/yard... We had the Rosemary Chicken Wrap and the BBQ Chicken Wrap both are delicious. Took a few minutes to get our food but sit back and relax and take in the beauty of the garden... Would definitely recommend if you are vacationing like us and looking for something away from the hotels

Very charming hall in the wall place with amazing healthy options and great service. Love the ambiance as well.

Was expecting better, based on the reviews. Don't get me wrong, they are a small operation in a back yard. Its a novel idea and the people were very sweet. I had the veggie chili and thought the portion was very small for the price and it was just 'okay' and somewhat bland. My wife said the Fish wrap was good. Hardly any seating, so they could not handle a rush for sure. Was fun to try for something different, but was average.

  • Em S.

Delicious, fresh food at its best. I actually saw the chef walk out to the backyard to pick some fresh herbs for our meal. We used the yelp deal they had, but it would be a great value either way. My boyfriend got the BBQ chicken wrap, I got the turkey pasta with salad and we also had some really refreshing iced tea with basil and mint. Both meals were tasty and filling (we ate every last bite), but we didn't leave feeling grossly full. I think it's because everything we had was so fresh--just didn't have any sort of greasy component. I think I really liked our meal because it was healthy but not bland like some health foods can be. Added points for using all compostable utensils, plates, and cups. They're located very close to Lihue airport and easy to find. Relaxed vibe with seating outside in a lush area. The owner and chef are super nice and welcoming. We will definitely be stopping here again on our way to the airport going home for our last meal in Kauai!

  • Stephen W.

Was feeling the need for a salad and stopped in here for a quick lunch. Very quiet, tucked away location that looks like just another house on the street. Staff was very friendly, and eating in the lush yard made for a very serene, peaceful meal, very appropriate for Kauai. Meal was delicious and fresh and the rest of the menu looked great too! Always impressed when kale actually tastes good!

  • Margie S.

Rosemary chicken was yummy and moist. Everything else we had was good, but not amazing. We had the salmon croquettes, collard greens (good, not overcooked), potato salad, black eyed peas, cornbread and salad. Everything was good but in the under seasoned side of things.

    (5)
  • Sue S.

Very local feeling. Like having a backyard picnic. We came in with a group of 7 which was more of a group than they could handle well. The service was very friendly. The Ahi wrap was very good.

Our last meal on Kauai, and we couldn't have chosen better. Thank goodness for Yelpers. After a week of plate lunches and other assorted meat-heavy fare, we were ready for a healthy, veggie-filled meal. I had the chicken salad and a kale smoothie. Yeah, yeah, chicken is amazing and all that but the smoothie is what I'll be talking about long after our flight leaves. Heaven in a cup. We were brought a freebie zucchini bread and "rice pudding" from the very sweet woman staffing the joint. So full and so happy. Do go!

  • Mario M.

Perfect food. Gluten free options and very healthy food. The mung bean soup is amazimg. Ahi wrap, salamon cakes with yam, and chili were delicious and well cooked and presented. The brown rice with quinoa is one of the best. We enjoyed the food and our time here. My family thought of this place as the best in our Kauai trip. The area is very nice and clean as well and you will meet lovely owners. Very hospitable and caring. Highly recommend if you want to enjoy healthy food. You will not go wrong with any of the dishes.

  • Linda B.

Excellent recommendation! I had the ahi wrap and peppermint iced tea! Delicious. Mike had the BBQ chicken wrap and yummy corn bread! I highly recommend it.

Very hole in the wall place but food was delicious and super fresh! I had the avocado sandwich and my husband had the kale salad and watermelon juice. Amazing!

  • Ariela R.

Nestled in the back of a residential area, we sat outside in the pouring rain and still wouldn't have traded our experience. Got the mung soup after reading some other yelpers and it didn't let me down - although my husband's chili was a tough contender, too. Spoke to Dane (spelling?), the owner, for about half an hour about Hawaii life, his vision for the cafe, life in general... a highlight of our trip. Even before we had started speaking with him, he offered us green tea on the house to warm us up from the rain. So glad we came here, and having one of those Yelp review cognitive dissonance moments of wanting to tell everyone to come here, but not wanting everyone to come here so as it tarnishes the small-town, down home vibe of the place.

    (5)
  • Ray S.

Nice little hole in the wall. All four of us enjoyed our lunch. The herbal tea and watermelon drink were very tasty. Also enjoyed our Ahi and chicken wraps

Adorable, quaint little cafe off the beaten track. The food is delicious (the sweet potatoes were to die for) and the staff are very sweet. There are tons of options for vegetarians - and for eating something healthy. Park out front and then head around the back. Exactly the type of place you wish to discover as a tourist, but if I were a local I'd come here too.

  • sherri m.

Very cute place. Small servings of chicken and yams were delicious. Potato salad just ok. Out of cornbread so he said you get toasted sliced sweet bread. Not toasted and not really sliced, just crumbs. I saw other plates with falling apart bread too. Coconut freeze was cold, not frozen, coffee. Not coconut, no ice, just weird tasting coffee. ???? For $16 and waiting for almost an hour, it was not worth it. Maybe with more help, more chairs and shade, it could be better.

Delicious healthy fresh food! The "Watermelon Juice" is amazing. Also loved the mung bean soup, but everything was excellent.

Me and my partner stopped in for Lunch. This Gem is tucked in the Heart of lihue. Surrounded by Garden and flowers. The Owner Dane came out to greet us, and He was very friendly, also his staff were very helpful, with suggestions. This place has Soul. Not your typical Kauai Restaurant. We had the Rosemary Chicken plate which was very flavorful, Kale salad, and Garden salad, with fresh herbs from the Garden. To top it off came with pineapple cream puff which was such a delight to end this amazing experience off with. We also had a Herbal Raspberry mint ice tea which my partner thought is was really good. We will be definitely stopping in again to try some of the other dishes they offered.. If your looking for something unique and cool, definitely stop in and give it a try, you won't regret it.

I'm averaging four stars for outstanding food and no stars for unpredictable service, so that makes it 2 for this review. Kudos to the owners for opening this sweet little establishment, which is a much-appreciated addition to Lihue dining options. We've been there a few times when the owners were running the show, and that is when the Greenery Cafe really shines with generous portions of tasty and fresh food that is clearly made with care and attention to detail. Creative takes on Southern specialties and dishes that taste lighter and livelier than their regular Mainland incarnations. The owners are clearly proud of their business and they should be - it can be a really great place. However, be sure to check who's on duty before placing your order, because if the owners aren't around, then it can bomb. Like the last time we were there: the person taking orders at the counter didn't know that the mung bean soup was 86-ed, and it took her 10 minutes after ordering to tell us that, so we switched to the daily special soup (curry vegetable) at HER suggestion. 10 minutes later, she tells us that they are also out of that. OK......no soup for us, then!! At this time, we are 20 minutes into ordering and still no food. Now, 20 minutes is not that much time in a regular restaurant, but this is a take-out counter, so it is annoying that the order-taker did not know what items were 86-ed when she is also the person putting the orders together in the kitchen. We also ordered 2 dozen macaroons to go (when they get these right, they are AWESOME!) We get our macaroons 40 minutes after placing our order. With anticipation, we bite into one...and discover that they are only half-filled, and further, that the filling was runny and completely of the wrong consistency. We went back to complain. The counter person indicated that they reason they were only half-filled was that they ran out of filling!?!?!! (Do you think she could have told us that before selling us the full order, but only half-filled?) The owners should be very concerned who they leave in charge of the shop - that counter person really turned us off. P/S: if you react badly to mosquito bites, remember to put on some bug spray before you go, otherwise YOU'LL be the special of the day for the resident mozzies in the surrounding lush greenery :)

The food is to die for! I bit into their grilled cheese sandwich and had flashbacks of when I was younger, their rosemary chicken wrap was also amazing! Everyone is super nice here also. 5 stars! ^.^

This is a little gem of a cafe set in a lovely garden. Our breakfast of omelets, toast, and sausage was very satisfying. Recommend the green tea with lemongrass.

Loved the atmosphere of this place feeling like home or eating in your parents backyard. Was hard to find initially but we found it and was very pleased. We came here right before our flight to O'ahu, conveniently located close to the airport if you want a great pick-me-up. The food was made fresh and the watermelon juice was Ono!

Finally stopped by after passing this place for so long. Bottom line: delicious healthy food at a reasonable price. I'm so happy I decided to give them a try. Needless to say, I'll be coming back for more! *great for lunch! *the salmon wrap is amazing :)

A neat little joint. Nice change of pace. Quiet little cafe in their back yard - Literally. Everything is light, freshly made, simple. All the ingredients seemed "real", natural, and clean. I had the fried fish - seemed fresh, very meaty, thin breading. Ok, nothing special. The homemade oil/lime/herb dressing on the garden salad was very fresh and tasty, and the greens themselves were super fresh, with herbs mixed in. Wife's rosemary chicken wrap was good, and fresh, again though not changing your life yummy. The owner brought out fresh-cut local pineapple and lychee for us to try, nice touch, and just genuinely made us feel very welcome.

The Greenery Cafe is a lovely hidden gem tucked away behind a quaint house in Lihue close to the airport. While the covered patio area only accommodates two tables, it was the perfect place to enjoy a healthy meal before our flight and stay protected from the April rain showers. I was compelled to order the salmon cakes as I haven't eaten them in ages and for some reason they bring back the nostalgia of eating them during my childhood. Already a healthy option, the meal was made even better with the sides of sweet potato yams and kale salad. My father ordered the rosemary chicken wrap. It must have been good as my father didn't leave any behind for me to sample. For dessert, we opted to try the coconut rice pudding. One of the ladies working at the cafe brought out the warm pudding in a little plastic to-go cup. I was pleasantly surprised to find chunks of purple taro mixed in to the pudding which definitely makes it one of the most unique rice puddings I've eaten. I also appreciated that the pudding had just a subtle sweetness to it. The cafe staff were all very friendly. I had a nice conversation with the man who took our order when he asked whether we were locals or visitors to the island. I also appreciate when restaurant staff take a genuine interest in their customers. The Greenery Cafe has now been added to my list of local Kauai eateries I will return to on subsequent visits to the island.

This place is like a treasure hunt. Off the main road and then hidden behind a house... but keep searching! It's worth it. Had the Kale Salad with Chicken. My wife had the Chicken Rosemary Salad. Both were excellent!! We live in Kauai and decided to try some place new. We will definitely be back.

Quite nice visit I had. Very healthy and delicious choices and ok environment. We ordered the spaghetti and some wraps and there were nothing wrong with them. The only issue is the portion, most of us had to snack on something else afterwards.

A hidden little gem in Lihue. It's set back behind a house, feels very private and secluded in a good way - meaning it doesn't have swarms of tourists. The watermelon juice was amazing and I really enjoyed the sandwich I got. Next time I come to Kauai, I'm definitely coming back to explore the menu more.

Food is tasty, service was lousy. Slow brought out order incomplete drinks came last

I love this place. How stinkin' cute is a back house off the beaten path that sells healthy and fresh food? Really cute. I loved the menu, the people that work here are very nice, they use environmentally friendly food containers and utensils, their coffee is great! And the food is delicious. I had to run from my hotel a few miles to get here but it was worth it. Not too many food options around this area. I highly suggest trying this place. It takes a little while for the food to be prepared but it's worth the wait. Thank you for the yummy Kale salad and Salmon!

  • Brad D.

I had the Rosemary chicken spinach wrap which was delicious! I also noticed they have their own herb garden so everything you eat tastes fresh. The owners are incredibly cool and hospitable making the dining experience one of a kind.

  • Seth S.

What's better than starting your Kauai stay with a super Ono ahi wrap??! What makes it so delicious is the perfect spinach wrap filled with simple fresh veggies and perfectly cooked and seasoned ahi. I have also tried the chicken rosemary wrap, kale smoothie, and all their sides and its all done so right. Also, I love the back yard seating :) and its right by the airport.

Ginger Mung Bean soup from celestial realms, kale salad of life and perfectly cooked quinoa and brown rice. In the true spirit of Kauai, this hole in the wall backyard kitchen serves its blessed patrons with Mother Earth's bounty. Like all of the other yelp reviews I proclaim, "5 stars you hath earned". Thank you for honoring the healthy spirit of Kauai.

Kauai island delight on Akahi St. in Lihue. Super excellent food for your heart and soul. Healthy, tasty and great service. Thank you Dane, Neina and Chris. ..

  • Mark A.

Nice little hole-in-the-wall place, behind a house. The avocado sandwich was good, and the bean soup side as well (though as a side, the soup was very small). I ordered the "rice pudding", which was actually a warm rice soup with taro and banana. It was interesting, but definitely not a pudding. Overall recommended if you're looking for a quick lunch using fresh food in or near Lihue.

Yum. We stopped here on our way to our rental accommodations after arriving on Kauai. We were hungry and were so happy we found this gem. The staff couldn't have been kinder and the food was super fresh. We ordered the avocado sandwich on gluten free bread, salmon cakes, turkey spaghetti and Rosemary chicken on mixed greens. I had an amazing iced coffee drink that I am now currently craving. It's a quaint spot so give it a try! Aloha!

  • Stephanie A.

This place was amazing! We were driving around exploring the island when we started getting hungry. Checked out Yelp and found this place. It's hidden in the back behind a house--hidden places are always the best. I ordered a rosemary chicken wrap, my mom a rosemary chicken salad, dad a rosemary chicken melt & husband the ahi wrap. Everything was DELICIOUS! We sat outside and just enjoyed ourselves. My mom kept raving about her salad and thought about ordering another to go but we weren't heading back to the hotel. If you're staying on the island I definitely recommend this place for lunch. It's not heavy food so you feel satisfied with a good meal and are ready for my island exploring.

Clean green eatery machine! I love the lunch we had. We tok advantage of the $10 lunch special of the day which was an organic turkey spaghetti with a garden salad and garlic toast. We also bought a kale green salad sweetened by local bananas ! Our lunch was so delicious! And I would come back daily if I lived nearby! Try it! You won't regret it!

  • sara n.

Yummy and healthy. We had the ahi and rosemary chicken wraps for lunch, which both came with what seemed like flax seed and spinach tortillas. Nothing heavy - despite "soul food" description. Off the main road behind a house.

  • Eric P.

Simply great food! Worth it to stop in and relax...have a good meal and enjoy the great food! Ahi wrap amd a kale salad with ahi added was a great meal...and don't pass up the amazing iced teas! The mint basil is fantastic as is the rasberry lemongrass.

  • Tyler Y.

Came here to eat lunch with my boss. It's a cute and quaint place. Really cozy, feels like you're eating in your backyard just kicking back. I had an avocado sandwich, which was a typical avocado sandwich. Nothing special. My boss had an ahi roll, which looked delicious (even though I don't eat fish). We also tried the mung bean soup. The soup was kind of more on the ginger side. Not sure if that's how it should be or not, but I mean it was a flavorful soup! Overall, if you're looking for a quick and easy place to sit back and relax for lunch, then this place might be a good fit :)

    (3)
  • K H.

Yes, that's the place! It's hiding in the backyard of a home in a neighborhood of ordinary homes. Counter service with a smile. A healthy selection of salads and wraps. The rosemary Chicken salad (and wrap) were fantastic. A pleasant oasis with tasty food! Homemade feel and a relief from standard restaurants. If you are in a hurry on your way to or from the airport, stop here. You will not be disappointed.
