Best Chinese food in North Shore! Asian lovers should go. The cold ginger chicken is a must.

I've never been more disgusted dining in a restaurant than I was dining here tonight. We had no intention of eating here but our first choice of restaurants closed early. Laie Chop Suey was on the way home and we were starving, so we pulled in. We ordered spring rolls, oxtail soup and honey walnut shrimp. We also ordered char Sui and shrimp fried rice but apparently the waitress forgot to write it done, so we never got it. When all was said and done we didn't care! About 3/4 of the way through our dinner (thank goodness it wasn't earlier) the kid at the next table was kicking around a dead roach on the floor that was covered in dust. I swear I wanted to vomit! The idiot dad just sat there and smiled (but don't get me started on THAT in this review). We very politely asked for the check, paid our bill and got the heck out of Dodge! Oh, forgot to mention I stopped off at the bathroom on the way out and there was a shrimp shell on the bathroom floor! I told my husband on the way home if I end up with food poisoning, please have the ambulance at least take me to Queens! I might die if I am taken to Kahuku! We will NEVER RETURN! Health Department should be on alert.

So many negative reviews.... I personally had a pretty good experience here. I had been sick and in great need for some soup, however I did not want to drive all the way into Kane'ohe for some oxtail soup or pho. My fiancee on the other hand had wanted to eat chopy suey which was not at all what i wanted, but I agreed to go along for the ride. However, when we got there I discovered that to my pleasant surprise they had oxtail soup! We kind of forgot that portions are a little big for one person so we ended up with plenty of left overs. Prices were very fare. What we ordered: Oxtail soup - yummy, plenty of veggies. not much oxtail and i think i'd prefer zippys oxtail. Mushroom chicken - big fat mushrooms, decent amount of chicken Gon lo mein - as good as any other i've eaten Service was decent and overall i left content and full of soup :)

The fried rice is gross, it's tasteless and I'm sure it they just cook it in the morning and when someone orders it they just heat it up in the microwave. Never get the friend rice! Remember not the friend rice, it's pretty much just like eating white rice, one of the worst chinese restaurant I have ever been to in Hawaii, I thought Panda Express is bad but this is the worst.

Always good! Bill and his staff are always friendly and on it with the service. Favorites; lemon chicken soo crispy and the sauce is not to sweet; beef unchoy w/shrimp sauce; crispy gau gee is AweSome! Supporting local businesses is key to having a productive community.

I've been coming here since I was a kid so I might be somewhat biased, but I do know what horrible Chinese food and what awesome Chinese food is and this is pretty good Chinese food. Considering this a family owned business (most are) that's been opened since 1983, I seen their ups and downs, they are most definitely up for quite a few years now. Bill (the owner) allows people to bring their catch in (cleaned and in your own pan) and he'll cook it anyway you want, for a reasonable price. The service is good and it's clean here.

Really - it was better than I expected. I saw a few people that came n - looked at the walls with dated ripped tattered photos of food instead of a menu on the wall and just turned back around. There were many normal local looking families sitting down - sharing meals lazy susan wise. One thing- if families are sitting down to eat on an early Sat afternoon, you can tell that it is family friendly and acceptable to each member of the family and at least civil. Here's what I was surprised to find: Beef Broccoli was pretty good. Not fantastic but better than I expected- not chewy but cooked well, broccoli still has that crunch to it. Fried shrimp- in a bread batter and the shrimp and batter were really tasty. Crab Ragoon- small amount of crab but the fired part of the chip/ wonton was good. Gau Gee- fried pork- normal but still good to eat. Pork Char Shu- soaked more like families make down home on Molokai- meaning the red was not slapped on right before serving or fake made but soaked for at least a while so that the taste and flavor was throughout the pork and not just tasteless on the inside. Pork Char Shu was a happy surprise that it was good and better than I have had at other china town restaurants. Sweet sour spare ribs- not super greasy so that the meat could be eaten off the bones but not as wonderful tasty as a paina or first birthday party from a local ohana. Mixed Veg chop suey looked like the vegs were fresh- there sure were hot enough when they first came out to the table. Smelled wonderful. Egg Fu Young was really just an egg omelet of just egg and meat and no cheese. Not an egg fu young that I am used to with sauce or preparation- just a cheese-less omelet. Fried Rice- has a little egg, some day old pork (IMHO) and just rice- no real vegs to speak of at all like other fried rice. The rice is a tiny bit on the buckshot side. White rice- The rice is a tiny bit on the buckshot side. As others mention it being dry- we call that Buckshot. Price is maybe $.50 more than in Honolulu, so really it is just about the same price as a local Honolulu place. So - price is reasonable for up in Laie. Staff appears to be more local instead of Chinese- I could be wrong but it seemed like more of the waitresses were more likely to be BYU students or students in general. Regardless- friendly and hospitable. The place isn't dirty persa but just rundown old looking. The walls don't help as I mentioned the old looking pictures of food on the wall. It gives a hole in the wall feeling. Most of the places in that part of the mall are long-ways so you have to go all the way through tables to talk to the waitress at the counter from the doorway. Again- many people called and had take out the times I was there- so I feel better that many locals eat there. I can understand others criticism- it is not Panda Express but how many chains can handle the lower population of having not a really crowded city? I don't think it is fair to compare them to Panda. Since there are only a few choices up in Laie - this is a good choice for me and family to come back to when I have educational meetings or meeting up at BYU.

We have found a few diamonds in the rough and weren't the least bit concerned about trying this hole in the wall slightly dirty spot. Our explorations before have often resulted in outstanding food and even better service. That wasn't the case tonight. When I greeted the waitress (yes I had to greet her) I asked about vegetarian soup options and was directed to a wonton vegetarian version. Our grease drenched spring rolls we ordered while waiting were barely edible. To our surprise when the soup finally arrived pork was layered on top so my fiancé reminded her we had requested vegetarian and she kindly said she would replace it. About 10 minutes after my fiancé had finished his meal a second waitress asked if we needed anything else and I indicated we had been waiting for my soup for quite a while. She returned to confirm I wanted vegetarian and proceeded to tell me the soup was never started. I told her not to start it at that point and we asked for a manager who I greeted with a warm "hello" to which he responded, "you must not know what a wonton is." I explained the situation and he said the waitress' message was never delivered and that this was her last day anyway and that she didn't know anything. He then threw up his hands and said, "I'm not in the mood for this" as he returned to the kitchen. We paid our barely legible bill and got the heck out.

We just went thru the Haunted Lagoon and was hungry!! we are all thinking Zippys back in town, but someone mentioned Laie Chop Suey. So it was a go. I had dinner here with a group of 11. We each ordered a dish and did family style. I thought their food was great! Until i spilled the entire Lemon Chicken sauce on my plate of food. Man i was so bummed. But my bf switched plates with me! So nice of him. The staff was welcoming and very friendly. My water was refilled without constantly bugging them. They dealt with our paying method of half cash and 3 debit cards for one check mess. Oh man I would've gone crazy. lol. My fave dishes are: Chicken Black Bean, Walnut Shrimp, and Lemon Chicken. It was yummies in my tummy!! I plan on going back the next time I'm in the area.

Staff is very friendly which almost makes up for the lack of flavor in their food. Make the trip and go to Kin Wah in Kaneohe if you have a craving for real Chinese cookin. You'll be glad you did;)

11/04/2013 ... I've eaten Chinese Food in Canada, Australia, China, and in numerous states within these United States ... and I've loved each and every one of them ... except Laie Chop Suey Restaurant! The steamed rice was extremely dry, and the Sweet & Sour Chicken was absolutely disgusting! Doughey chicken strips, slightly sweetened, but no sour at all! The onions were soggy, and the celery was unrecognizable. No bell pepper, and no pineapple ... no color either. Everything was the beige-yellow color! I suggest Panda Express in Kaneohe ... they've never disappointed me ... and their prices are far better too! Paying $ 8.25 for the worse S&S Chicken, and $ 1.50 for dry rice, at Laie Chop Suey ... sucks pimentos!

Dr. Schlacter's Special -- great choice for vegetarians! Made with fresh veggies including snow peas and delicious fried tofu. Could have used more tofu. Unfortunately rice didn't come with it, which is weird for a Chinese restaurant, but as the dish was only about $6, I'm not complaining. My partner enjoyed his lunch combo with lemon chicken and beef & broccoli. Accepts credit cards!

Makes me wanna cry how bad their chinese food is. and they are CHINESE. Poor quality and very overpriced. Chow mein is super gross. their lunch specials are decently priced, but i love eating leftover chinese food and this place's food makes very bad leftover chinese food :[ L&L in the same lot has chopstick express (panda express style) that's better.

WHAT.... Did I just eat?! The best thing in the menu was was the steamed rice And water. They didnt clean the fat off the chicken, and there were bones in the duck, and The broccoli was undercooked... So puzzled why this has been in business for 30 years?!

The locals seem to like this place, but I was not a huge fan. The prices certainly are low, but I did not find the food very flavorful. Additionally, there are no items on the menu that offer chicken breast. One item I did enjoy was the Dr. Schlacter Special, which is a plate of vegetables with tofu.

I love Chinese food and well I think they make pretty good Chinese food. Bill(the owner) is awesome always so welcoming and gives the best recommendations on what to order. I'm a vegetarian and I love that they have so many options. It's not a 5 star restaurant but it's pretty darn good for what they offer.

Guess I shoulda read the reviews so I would have known what to order. It turns out that I ordered pretty standard fare. I won't be specific but suffice it to say I had soup, rice, seafood, vegetables and none of the selection I chose was good. It was flavorless and expensive. I will go back to try their chicken dishes with some kind of noodle. Maybe tastier and cheaper too. Service was great but the food came out of the kitchen slowly. No wonder so many ordered ahead. The takeout was like an express line. I think they used cut up pork chops in their pork dishes. It was thick, leathery, dry and flavorless. I had to squeal it down. One recommendation: If you try the salt/pepper shrimp, you'll love it. Crispy shell, very salty, very good. Only downside, if you are eating this with say, 4 of your friends, you may need 5 orders of the stuff. The shrimp are tiny and shrimply. Area needs a lot more competition. Couldn't hurt. They are such an institution, I've been coming forever, but no improvement since the 80's Although the prices are competitive as in town, the town portions are more than adequate to share. The portion of one dish would feed a hungry chlld OK then, one more warning, the squid ginger onion had about 15 small bites of squid and over 30 slices of ginger. What I don't get is, that ginger costs more than squid?!? Went 3 times this month. But willing to try one more time.

Its convenient and 3 stars because the overall experience. It seemed as though the waitresses were new and we waited for our drinks to be refilled and waited for boxes and bags but the food came out quick and the servers seemed to busy I did tip them a little though. Lol The food was good I have had better but it is coveniently located nearby.

We were visiting the North Shore and were on the hectic evening run of trying to find a place to eat dinner. Luckily, we came across this place next to the Foodland. They were pleasant to us even though we came in 15 minutes before closing (8:45 pm). The waitress was friendly and patient by giving us time to decide. It was nice to find some Chinese food close by. We ordered Roast Duck in Noodle Soup, Won Ton Noodle Soup, Seaweed Soup, Curry Eggplant, Fried Rice, and Mongolian Beef. Everything hit the spot and the bowls were generous portions. The Won Tons had a good amount of meat with a good balance of veggies. Though, the Seaweed Soup was average. Even as a family of four, we had some leftovers for lunch the next day. We strongly recommend this restaurant!

What can I say. Big portions, and good Chinese food. Both the Dinner or Lunch Plates are great selections.

I lived in hauula for the summer of 2005. I hope laie chop suey is still there!! I loved the lemon chicken at this place . It's soo flaky& zesty. I miss it soo much. The katsu chicken is good too. This is were all the locals go and eat. The chop suey is not what i expected though i think it was actually authentic chop suey ( who would of thought lol) . If I every go back to the north shore I will definitely go to this little ma and pa eatery. Forget about L&L go to LAIE Chop Suey!!!

Lunch plates start at $5.50 for 2 choices and rice! Thought i'd order 3 choices but they gave so much food that i couldn't finish! Food was delicious and not as oily and fatty as most chinese places.

This was not good. Had the Vegetarian Chop Suey, Curry Eggplant, and Orange Chicken. The only dish that was worth the calories (or the $$) was the rice. Not flavorful. Strange, tough texture on the chicken. Not recommended.

My family ate here before going to the Polynesian center (very good shows by the way). Everyone loved the food. We are from the San Francisco Bay area where there are many good Chinese restaurants. I would rate this as a great family Chinese restaurant. Try the lemon chicken.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
