They are serious when they say they close at 2! We arrived at 1:50pm and they told us we could only order take-out. Hahah it was all good tho cause we got to enjoy our burgers and fries oceanside (very nice ;) ) I ordered the teriyaki beef burger while the hubby ordered the Hukilau burger. Double yum in our tummys Hahah.. A bit hard to find and you should use the navi to get in the area; however turn on the street where the Lai'e sign is and not on the next street (that is if you're coming from North Shore) Much easier to find that way (my navi led me the wrong way initially) have fun!!

i love the supreme omelette, french toast, panacakes and hungry hawaiian! so worth the walk down the street!

This place is so good its cheep and the people there are really nice. The serves is really fast.

Locomoco for breakfast, Hukilau Burger for late lunch heading to and from North Shore. Locomoco definitely a good way to get fueled up in the morning, throwing some Tabasco sauce in there reallly helped. Burger for lunch was big, hot and messy, and definitely tasty. Worthwhile if it's on the way...

O!M!G!!! I thought I fell into heaven as soon as I tried their pork dish!! First of all it melted in my mouth but on top of that the no doubt homemade gravy that it was served with enhanced the taste by a 1000! Upon finishing my plate I fell into a food coma from which I did not want to come out!!

  • Janell H.

Loco moco was huge and tasty. I must have gone on an off day though, because the service wasn't as nice as some reviews had indicated. The waitress seemed irritable and seemed to want to rush us out of there. I'd still go back though.

Saw this place on Man vs. Food and knew I had to try it out. I got the Hukilau burger, which was one of the best burgers I have ever had and I am from Texas!!!! My wife got the Loco Moco, which was also great. Make sure you check the hours, we almost missed lunch! We also had a very friendly server with wonderful service, when we go back to Hawaii, we will try this place for breakfast. Also great prices!!!!

Quick friendly service and great local kine grindz. Thanks to Man vs Food for the idea.

Went here twice - breakfast one day, and lunch the next day. Love this place because everything makes you feel like you're home - food, staff, decor, etc. It felt so nostalgic of growing up that I just had to complete the package and order spam and rice for my meal. The lady who served us was the sweetest, nicest person ever.

Before I rate the food.... The people who work there are wonderful. The beautiful lady with the light eyes (always forget to ask her name on each of my trips out) is so friendly and was kind enough to turn me and my girlfriends on to some super deals on the island! And she was spot on! The food here is awesome, plentiful, and economical. Service is so very friendly. My friends and I had french toast, eggs, coffee and bacon and we got out for under $8. Unbelievable for Oahu! Thank you wonderful lady with the light eyes! You made our vacation!!!

Our favorite! We stay down the street at my Mom's and this is a for sure visit every time. Friendly service!!!! Great food!!! We LOVE it!!

Small joint with a great hawaiian menu. Worth the cost of the $35 rental car from waikiki to get out of touristland and see the beautiful hawaiian coast. Food was cheap. We had the loco moco and full stack of banana pancakes. (huge cakes) and a coke (free refills) and a glass of passion orange juice plus a side of portugese sausage and a side of bacon. The total bill was $25 bucks. Food is served on styrofoam plates with plastic knives and forks so get over yourself and enjoy the food. Dont hate cuz they dont have "proper" dishes and utensils. Parking is the suxxor but the neighbors dont seem to care when u park in front of their house. There was a couple small groups in front of is around 10a on a friday but the wait went fast. Drop someone off in front to run inside and get u on the list while u go find parking. Cash only cash only Leave a good tip for the lone waitress that works her ass off. She deserves it

  • Doug ..

the food isnt great but the staff and super nice. the loco moco had some nice gravy but the patty had an unfamiliar taste.

  • Billie L.

Not a clean place ... very much like a paper plate picnic indoors. Looks nothing like the Hukilau Cafe in the movie with Drew Barrymore. Basically, this is a local jokel spot that the average tourist needs to pass up.

  • Eric C.

Definitely 5 stars!!! This has to be the best kept secret in all the island (Just a tad above Ted's Bakery) They are closed Sunday and Monday, and 2pm on otherdays, it took us a few tries to get them while open. We went there because it is a key part of the storyline in 50 first dates, but we will always go back because of the amazing "authentic" food and incredible service It is VERY hard to find, i had to turn around 3 times

    (5)
  • Al L.

went there twice to try and get the Hukilau burger after watching Man vs. Food, but the first time they were closed already (closes @ 2 pm) and the 2nd time they were only service breakfast...at least we had the loco moco which was awesome!!! parking is limited though

    (4)
  • Kim F.

Amazing!!!! Had the hukilau burger and the kalua pork. I highly recommend them both! Could not be happier with this place. I wish I could eat there every day!

    (5)
  • Kade M.

Huge servings, great price. Can't go wrong with this place! Try the teriyaki beef but definitely go with a huge appetite because the portions are generous to say the least. Lived in Laie for a while and fell in love with the Hukilau Cafe. This is some authentic Hawaiian food and anyone on the North Shore should stop by at least once. They're closed Sundays and I'd recommend checking the hours if you'll be by later on in the afternoon.

  • Christina B.

The loco moco was good, but the Hukilau Burger was great! We had to even all order one more to go! The place is small filled with locals on their lunch. The service was fast and we left happy and full!

I am a Loco Moco afficionado, hands down. Like fanatics, cheering religiously for football teams, body painted, screaming and raving, or college basketball fans that don't sit throughout the entire game, with their low-pichted chants and hand gestures to distract the opposition, I want to stand in the kitchen and chant "Go, cook, go" as if to motivate him and his team of hamburger, gravy, rice, and eggs. I want to stand on my seat and yell to the highest heavens at every flip of the patty and every stir of the pot. I want to start the wave at the crack of the egg shells and ding of the rice pot. And I want to bask in the winner's glory of the finished beauty that is the one and only Hukilau Loco Moco, embracing the nearest patron to sing "We are the Champions" in triumph, fist pumping and head bobbing. Hukilau Cafe's Loco Moco should be served in the Smithsonian Institution, recognized as the greatest invention ever. It should be entered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most sensual, deliciously crafted work of art in existence. This plate of exquisite delight should be offered to neighboring countries, shared amongst aggressive enenmies, and enjoyed by family and friends alike, to which its artists should each receive Nobel Peace Awards for lowering the world's crime rate because everyone was either too full or too tired afterward to fight. I've had the pleasure of having the Hungry Hawaiian and the Hukilau Burger, both supreme in their own respects, but the HONOR of indulging in the Loco Moco is well worth the price, the drive, and scenery, and the wait. The parking is almost non-existent, meaning if you can find parking in front of someone's house, you're lucky. You'll find out what I'm talking about when you get there. The cafe is, well, a cafe, and shouldn't be treated as a traditional restaurant, so don't expect quick seating. Don't expect sitting down period because this place gets crowded quick. I've spent time waiting for a bit, nothing outrageous. And to enjoy the sexy Loco Moco, I'd wait a LOOOOOONG time. Do enjoy yourself when you go and by all means, try the Loco Moco. Mahalo, W.M. Hennigan

Hole in the wall joint that is right off the beaten path in Oahu. Dirt cheap, no frills, really great food, and kind service. Order the hukilau burger after watching it on man vs. food and it was WELL worth the long drive to this place. Tip: if you are up this way it is only five minutes to Giovanni's shrimp shack. Stop there and get a plate of shrimp scampi. You WILL NOT regret it!

  • Kalai F.

I agree with all that i have been told about this place. Nope, not the loco moco, or the hukilau burger. All my local boys and girls out there say its the Roast Pork and Mahi burger and they got it right on. The Roast Pork is the best i have ever had and the Mahi Burger was also the best i have ever had. Amazingly 2 of the BEST in one sitting???? That is nearly impossible! Working with the best cooks on the island on a daily basis and coming across this place was a pleasing surprise. Fast friendly service(Lehua- she cracked me up), and a easy on the wallet price made this place an absolute must eat!

  • Pane M.

Everything on the menu is good to eat. One of the few treasures in Laie.

  • Ilene B.

Our family of ten stayed in Laie, Hawaii in in home across the street from the Hukilau Cafe in July 2010. Needless to say, we ate at the Hukilau several times for breakfast and lunch. The food was excellent; the macadamia pancakes were put of this world!!! The prices of all the food were extremely reasonable. The best thing of all for us was the great service! The staff were so warm and friendly and made us feel right at home!! We can't wait to return to the "castle" and Hukilau!!!! Mahalo

  • Elizabeth T.

We took a long detour up the coast to visit Laie so we could check out the infamous Hukilau Cafe. I had the Hukilau Platter while my fiance had the Moco Loco (as recommend by Adam on Man vs. Food). Both were sensational. For $21 we both had meals and drinks, a real bargain on Oahu. Parking is tricky and the place is small but don't get discouraged by a long walk or long wait. The drive up there was alone worth it (the Kamehameha Highway runs along the coast with mountains to view on the west and the ocean on the right). Everyone who worked their was incredibly nice and I only wish we had more time on the island so we could have eaten there more than once.

This place is worth the drive to the "rainy" side of Oahu, and worth leaving your hotel for breakfast in the morning (cough cough...Turtle Bay). We stopped the first time, and three of our group had the infamous Hukilau burger - and it did not disappoint! I watched three men devour the burger-teri beef-fried egg manwich in a very short amount of time. I had a teri chicken burger and it was delicious too. Great mac salad and fries!! Ridiculously cheap. After being treated wonderfully and shown the inexpensive breakfast menu, we came back the next morning and my three guy friends were sorely disappointed they couldn't get Hukilau burgers at 9am - they don't start serving those until 11am. Instead, we all sampled various omelets and plate lunches that were huge and tasty. Ordered the banana pancakes for breakfast dessert and they were KILLER. These are the real deal! Our waitress remembered us from the afternoon before and comped our huge, fluffy, delicious banana pancakes. We got out for a steal and seriously contemplated coming back AGAIN later in the day for another round of Hukilau burgers. This place is not to be missed.

Incredibly authentic food, friendly service, and reasonable prices - this place is a winner. My wifey had the french toast, and I had the Loco Moco w/hamburger, rice, gravy, and 2 eggs over easy. The food was tasty but not exceptional.

We went here twice during our vacationing on the North Shore. Their food is quite delicious, the service is excellent and the price is so good! I could eat there every day. It's a small place so if you go during a busy time you may have to wait awhile, but it's worth the wait. Trust me.

My friends and I were pretty lucky because we decided to visit this place on a Saturday, in which they serve breakfast. Our navi led us in the middle of a local neighborhood. The place was a little rundown and "shack" looking, connected to a small store behind. After a small wait we were seated inside- the well-known place of 50 First Dates (just the name). Locals will stare..... its ok bc my two friends were staring back at them anyways (who isnt going to look at good-looking locals?) Breakfast was affordable and delicious!!!! We ordered big huge plates of friend rice/egg, macadamia pancakes, loco moco (best he ever had), and Hungry Hawaiian plate. 4 stars bc the POTATOES are nasty- didnt taste washed or cooked right. Could of been 3 stars but the price is definitely right. Service was alright. If we go up here looking for a cheap, tasty, local breakfast...definitely here. Worth stopping by.

Ono! The food here is delicious and the portions are huge! I had the BBQ mixed plate and my hubby had the steak sandwich--we were both happy and full. Both meals, plus sodas, tax and tip, all came to under $20! You really cannot beat this place. Great food and service and super cheap. Just remember to bring cash because that's all they take.

  • Shane R.

We came across the place last week by accident, It was probably the best meal we have had on the island. Most of the big name places all you pay for is enviroment and OK food. But this place was just a little local cafe with good food and very affordable.

  • Marcus H.

I didnt get the Man vs Food order, but we did come on a Saturday morning around 10 AM. Food was what I normally eat at for breakfast, some rice, eggs, some corned beef hash., spam, portugese sausage, But Im NOT at home and that's what makes it even better! It was feel good food without all the expenses that we would have paid at Turtle Bay ( our friends wedding location ) The service here was excellent and very the two ladies were extremely friendly. This is my first yelp and I give it a 4/5 for a great local spot.

    (4)
  • John R.

great local food at local prices...no gouging of the tourist....cash only...had the loco moco and the Hukilau burgers at our table.....got the tee shirt.....very good and very friendly folks.....worth the effort.

  • Heather T.

Excellent food and extremely friendly staff! We saw the cafe featured on Man V Food & it did not dissapoint one bit! We've been on vacation here for a week & have eaten it every single morning! The best food on Oahu!!! If you're looking for great local food at super cheap prices with the friendliest staff on the island...you have to go to the Hukilau Cafe!

  • Eddie P.

Missed breakfast. It seems that's their best meal. I had the teri beef and my wife had the shrimp. Overall it was alright. Certainly not worth driving from Turtle Bay to here. The teri beef was soaking in the sauce for too long. The fries were good, though. At least it wasn't expensive. I've had better at other plate lunch places like Zippy's, Rainbows, and Kaneka's. Maybe next time I will try the breakfast.

  • L D D.

this place is not for those who are faint of heart or high maintenance. what may seem like a hole in the wall to some is a very authentic rustic cafe which serves quick good food. first off, this place makes loco mocos the way i like my women. juicy, wet, thick and stacked! you won't be disappointed. staff is super friendly and gives great service. cash only and they close at 2pm so get there early. they also have a great selection of burgers.

    (5)
  • Christian W.

How can you top Hukilau Cafe's superb, legendary service? Impossible. Who can make a better omelet, french toast or steak sandwich in Hawaii? No one. Don't let the long line outside the door intimidate you. Good food is worth the wait. If the cafe is closed on a day they are supposed to be open, don't worry. It means the staff is watching the San Diego Chargers beating up on their opponent.

    (5)
  • Jim B.

We went for breakfast and had pancakes and french toast. Although they sound rather boring and typical breakfast food, they were truly delicious. And the other reviews are spot on about the service. They have to have the friendliest staff in the restaurant business. We loved it so much, we went back the next day to have breakfast again.

5 stars for the real, unadulterated local style, neighborhood eats. You want a place that doesn't advertise, doesn't overcharge and serves a solid breakfast? Hukilau Cafe is your place. Drive slowly to avoid roosters and kids on the way down these back streets of Laie. Opens at 7am (Tuesday - Friday). Try the short stack w/coconut syrup or the banana pancakes, or maybe you'd like a morning beef stew/rice/eggs. How about homemade cornbeef hash and eggs or Hawaiian Sweetbread french toast. It's all good and a great way to start your day.

  • Angela S.

I ate here with a friend last week. The prices were good and they give you a good portion size of food. The corned beef has was more potatoes than I'm used to. Be aware that they only take cash. It's a smaller location and you have to hunt down some street parking. My friend was able to order his eggs over easy even though the menu says they fully cook all eggs so that made him happy. We were on the search for a good breakfast spot and this is the top search result on yelp. I would say it's like going to zippy's for breakfast. Good basic local breakfast foods.

  • Carlos M.

Had breakfast here today, no frills, no fuss, not fancy but the food is really good n hearty and the prices are great! We fed our family of 6 for $37 not inc tip. We got some short stacks $4.75 for two GIANT pancakes (enough to fill anyone). Great atmosphere, very laid back, good mix of locals and tourists as well as students from the local university. I had the spicy Portuguese sausage and fried rice with scrambled eggs on top. $8 a huge portion and really tasty. If your looking for a fancy full service sit down breakfast this is not the place but if your looking for a big meal at a low price to fill you until dinner this is a great option. The location is very rustic (batrooms round the back) and expect to see a fly or two but it's good value overall and the food is good. I will definitely be back!

    (4)
  • Kailinani L.

VERY generous portions! Went for breakfast on a hot yet rainy day. It s a small place so with the rain the restaurant was crowded so we ordered takeout. We had the loco moco and the Portuguese sausage and eggs. You will be full! However, there was not enough gravy on the moco to even cover the rice on the bottom. The beef patty was large but did not have a lot of flavor. The pancakes and French toast looked really good and we will try those next time.

I tried it again after my previous 2 year review, it's just not my cup of tea. I really can't say it is bad since it has a great following, it seems to be either too authentic for my tastes or I don't know what. I still can't figure out the correlation to the movie, "50 first dates" the only similarity is the name, nothing else. Service is very good and friendly, but the vibe still seems more for the locals. Never did try the "Man vs. Food", Hukilau burger and it doesn't seem like I ever will. Aloha anyways :-)

  • Justin V.

The teri beef is bomb!!!! The staff is amazing! The food is so great. the only downfall is they dont except credit cards?! but when you have the cash i recommend this place to everyone.

  • Paige S.

CASH ONLY As with most people you hear about Hukilau Cafe one of two ways: Man Vs Food or 50 First Dates. We actually heard about it through our friends who live in Laie and they highly recommended we stop by for some cheap local grindz. Getting here you drive through a neighbor hood so you think youre going the wrong way, but you're not. Shortly you will arrive at a place that is likely to have some people waiting outside and then you know youve arrived. Parking: There is no parking lot, so you find what you can on the streets, just make sure not to block anyones driveway since it is a residental area. Ambiance & Seating: When you walk in its nothing fancy at all, regular old tables and screens on the windows. It is a super old diner and it has that feel as well. The Only strange thing is that there are always so many flies, but try not to think about it too much and concentrate on what matters: the food. Service: Service is always super friendly and you can feel the spirit of aloha in the air. What we Ordered: Water you have to get yourself, there are cups and a cooler that you may help yourself to throughout the duration of your meal. Both times we got the passion orange juice and its sweet and tangy, I love it...the color reminds me of tang :) My only gripe is that its so small...and I always want more. I've been several times and the first time was for breakfast: Fried Rice and Eggs - Gried rice with two eggs and your choice of ham, bacon, spam, pork links or portugese sausage 6.95 Hungry hawaiian Three large eggs and hcoice of two ham, spam, bacon, pork links or portugese sausaged servedw ith rice or home fried potatoes & toast or pancakes - 8.95 Macadamia Nut Pancakes Short stack: 4.50 banana pancakes Short Stack: 4.50 Corned beef hash and eggs -6.95 Teriyaki Beef and Eggs- 7.25 Everything we ordered was deceptively delicious and filling, as you can tell this breakfast alone was less than 40 bucks and it was a lot of food. The one i'd highly recommend is the hungry hawaiian which is a full meal in itself for only 9 bucks! Everything we ordered was home style local food that filled your tummy and your soul. Perfect kind of breakfast before hitting the water or exploring the north shore. Their lunch menu is different from breakfast and the only stand out for me was the obvious, hukilau burger. Hukilau Burger (Hamburger, teriyaki beef, fried egg, cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, mayo) This burge came out sooo piping hot....so hot, that yes, my greedy self bit into it and burned the roof of my mouth :( my girlfriends ended up using a fork and spoon but i'll tell you a secret--- if you just use the tips of your fingers, you'll get a little dirty but you will be able to eat it without burning your fingers! The burger was not only huge, it was moist, delicious and soooo filling. We got an order of fries separately and it was okay, nothing too exciting and it did not rival to the greatness of the burger. I loved it and it was enough to give me the itis and made me consider sleeping on the beach to let my food settle vs making the drive home down to the windward side. I will probably be back at this location, even with the flies and all because the staff is wonderful and friendly, the food is sooo cheap and every dish feels like it was made by your aunty! Mahalo Hukilau Cafe

  • Jorge H.

Not much to say here. I'm usually pretty generous with my reviews, but this place was all hype. We came here to start off an island drive/beach day so we needed something sustainable. We saw great reviews here and bought into it. However, the food left a lot to be desired. We ordered the corn beef hash with eggs and potatoes, along with a Portuguese sausage plate with rice. Every item except for the sausage needed A LOT of salt and hot sauce. The potatoes tasted like flavorless mush, the eggs were a simple quick one egg scramble with no flavor at all, and the corn beef tasted like unsalted old beef. I realize that you need to be courteous of people's diets, but a little salt goes a long way. I shouldn't have been surprised that our food came out in 5 minutes because I'm certain it's not made to order. I wouldn't normally complain about a meal made to provide body fuel, but served on a paper plate with water from a barrel, I'd say this meal should not have cost us $10 per plate. Sold at about $4.50 would justify the lack of flavor and presentation. And yes, I know, it's not a high end eatery, but if you sell this to me as mom and pops comfort food, I'm more likely to buy a meal elsewhere to comfort me from this one. I'm giving this two stars for all the sports memorabilia on the walls and because I didn't try their pancakes.

I'm new to Hawaii, Hawaiian food and culture. This place was one of my first experiences w island food and hospitality. I'm so pleased to say the food was so so good, the service was so so good and the place was small but clean. I fell in love w the staff and I didn't want to leave! I'm excited to come back and eat again! I got the stew w rice and potato salad and my hubby got the hukilau burger! We both ate everything! I wish I loved closer because I would eat here every day! These people are doing a great job !

Yes, its a neighborhood cafe....super casual...super great food...super service!! Breakfast 6:30am-10:00am and lunch 11:00- 2:00pm...this little piece of breakfast paradise has a few celeb surprises! I ate the Hungry Hawaiian w/double bacon and home fries, yummy! He ate the Supreme Omelet w/home fries and was pushing it away satisfied! The food was served hot and the server was happy and knowlegdeable of the area...for the North Shore eatin', well we're going back!

Hukilau Burger!! the best i tasted. 10 out of 10. seriously. that beef on beef. yummy. that egg and cheese with nice juicy onions and mushrooms in between those toasted breads. the fries top it off with that nice coke. seriously if u go to Hawaii u need to try this. Truth is if this place wasnt that good. 50 first dates wouldnt put it on their movie. :)

Simply love the food! Don't eat there as much as I would want too. Only because its always full and people waiting in line. Wish they had longer hours.

About an hour out of Waikiki and a 5 min drive from PCC. This place is hiden in a residential area used both by the locals and tourist alike. Theres was a bout a 15 minute queue. Nothing flash in terms of decor but the menu is so cheap and great simple items for eating. The Haukilau Burger was to die for if you have a bigg appetite. I opted for the cheese burger. The meat pattie was very tasty and juicy. Recommend it to any tourist looking for a bitr to eat.

  • Dub C.

This place was a hole in wall. I would give it four stars, if they got rid of the flies flying all over the restaurant. It was pretty disgusting. They should also invest in a fly zapper. Is Restaurant was hard to find and we almost missed it. It's in middle of residential houses. Good thing for smart phones... We were sadden that we missed breakfast by 10 minutes. The item we wanted was fried rice which technically is not really breakfast in the mainland. What happened to saying yes or blending the rules sometimes? It would go a long way. This place has a lot of local people eating here. There was one local that was able to he breakfast at 11:20AM which breakfast was over at 11:00AM. She must have called it in before 11:00AM. In addition, remember to bring CASH to this place because it's CASH ONLY...

Cute little restaurant. The banana pancake was awesome. Side of bacon was a little disappointing. Thin and not cooked crispy enough for my liking. My husband had the hungry hawaiian. The portuguese sausage was great, the potatoes weren't that good. dry rub seasoning was blah. Cash only

Stopped here for lunch the other day with a co-worker and we both had the loco moco. Gotta say it's one of the better loco moco because of the hamburger. The burger had good flavor and wasn't just a plain old patty with gravy and egg.

bare bones hawaiian grub. period. and i mean it in a way that this place is all about the food, and less about the rest. the food is awesome. something you look forward to when you go to hawaii. the food is the best and exactly what you dream about: great food, CHEAP prices, and way too much of it (in a good way!). mixed plates, burgers, katsu, mahi mahi, etc. no AC, so be ready small place in the middle of a neighborhood bathroom is out back the people are very friendly and way cool. shaka!

Went here for breakfast. Cash only. It was not crowded at 7am on a rainy Tuesday. We were told we could sit anywhere. Water was self serve. I ordered the teriyaki beef with scrambled eggs and rice. I thought it was delicious. My boyfriend ordered the corn beef hash with potatoes and he thought was ok. Would come here again. We are staying only a mile away so it was convenient.

This place has been a staple in the community for generations. Just know, when you go there it's design and basically what it is, a homestyle kitchen/mom and pop cafe. That's it. So I tell people, don't expect a high end eatery. It is what it is. But what that is, is a place for good, comfort food, and lots if it! Seat yourself, get your own water, but get ready for some amazing food!! The food is fulfilling, both on the plate and your stomach. Breakfast is my personal favorite. Today I had the fried rice omelet, while My wife had the steak sandwich. The only thing lacking in my omelet, I think was cheese. I assume omelets have cheese? Mine didn't, but nothing a good amount of ketchup can't cure. Other than that, this has been a great family ace for us!

Yeah...I'm a toursity. Make something of it. So I had to ask what a Loco Moco was. I've seen it mentioned in several places but so far there's been no description. Well hold on to your hats, because this doesn't sound very Hawaiian. It sounds Deep South. Top white sticky rice with two hamburger patties, a fried egg, brown gravy and grilled onions. Sweet merciful crap, it's delicious! My daughter had the Hukilau Burger and it was amazing also. There was some steaky bits on it that had a sweet flavor. And it's giant. All the food was giant. I can eat a lot for a gal and even I couldn't finish my lunch. Service was fast and kind. Yes, it's cash only. Plenty of locals, tourists and b-list celebs dining when we were there. Priced right.

A couple of new friends brought me to this little cafe and was pretty excited to try it. The place itself is very small, and a bit dirty. Flies swarm the place once your food comes out. I came to eat with my friends, not a family of flies. Besides this, the service is great. The people who work here are very nice. Also, this place is cash only! What I ordered: Hukilau Burger (Hamburger, teriyaki beef, fried egg, cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, mayo) : This burger is DELICIOUS and full of flavor. It came out PIPING hot so I had to wait a bit before I could actually handle it without burning off my finger tips. I finally resorted to eating with a knife and fork. Considering the fact that this burger was so full of ingredients, it became very messy so eating with a knife and fork worked. French Fries: Pretty bland. I probably won't order this again. I will probably be back only for pick-up.

Love this place. Staff is very friendly and helpful. I don't normally like pancakes that much, but I love the pancakes here. They give you more than enough to eat and if you eat breakfast here it will keep you full well until dinner time. Atmosphere is very casual and laid back. Location has plenty of parking and we didn't have to wait for a seat. I'd give them one more star if they took credit/debit cards. We had to run to the Foodland down the street for some cash, luckily they trusted us enough to let us leave and come back with payment!

I would like to give this place 3.5 stars... This was on our list as one of the places we had to eat at and made our way to North Shore to come here. It's tucked away in a neighborhood so you may have difficulty finding it. When we arrived, there weren't many people here at all. Be informed, this is a cash only place. My bf ordered the roasted pork and I ordered the loco moco. It was only like $7-$8 for each plate. Shortly after we ordered, a flood of people came in. Tons of tourists (like us) taking photos and waiting outside. The restaurant isn't very big. We got our food and it was good. Can't say that it was amazing or anything. Maybe our expectations were just too high? But the loco moco was meh... And his pork was okay. I guess if you're a fan of 50 First Dates, come by. They have posters of it inside, too.

Thank God this place was as close as it was to PCC. We were able to get a great meal (zero complaints from anyone) @ a bargain price. Even better considering the food @ the PCC Alii Luau was absolutely horrendous. Thank you Hukilau for filling our tummies before entering those gates... (don't get me wrong w/ PCC as the overall experience, less the Alii Luau was FANTASTIC). Not sure if we'll ever have a reason to go this far up North Shore again though if so, this place is an absolute no-brainer...

I'm big on customer service aka attitude. Today I made specific plans to go to this place only to be met by a girl at the counter who couldn't have cared LESS if I ate there or not. She was rude and acted as if my order and my business meant just another pain in her behind. After paying for my order with CASH (because no credit or debit cards are welcomed), I requested to speak to the owner. My 10 year old son saw him wave off the request like he couldn't be bothered either. I cancelled my order and got my money back. In this day of economic uncertainty, he might want to consider stepping up the customer service. A SMILE from that girl would have disarmed the triple negatives I heard upon arriving. Even if it was just her eyes...but there was nothing but contempt there, so I TOOK MY MONEY ELSEWHERE!!!!!

Very disappointed. Long drive to North Shore for breakfast only to find out they were out of potatoes, plenty of rice though , ugh. Service bad. Ordered eggs scrambled and they came over medium, no toast and drinks never came.

Hukilau Burger was awesome! Terriyaki beef, egg, and cheese over a burger . . . it didn't disappoint. I only failed to give it 5 stars because the place seemed a little dirty as I was eating my burger with one hand and swatting flies away with the other. Worth the trip. I'll be back.

Just incredible. Admittedly sparse decor and simple service. All of it adds to the authenticity of this small hawai'ian diner

Well worth the trip. The loco moco was insanely delicious. After two days of camping on a beach it was refreshing to crush two eggs, two burger patties, and potatoes, all smothered in gravy. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Excellent country setting, service, and nostalgia.

Good local atmosphere. Pricing isn't bad. Food was delicious, and they give you a ton! Banana pancakes and corned hash are our favorites! Make sure you have cash! It is cool to see how much they support the local community as well. Definitely a tourist and local spot.

Don't come here for the service. Was tough to find parking. No CO2 so no soda. Drank 6 glasses of water it was hot and humid. I think people only come here since it was on TV. The set up was nothing like was shown. The cook and waitstaff were a tad grumpy. It took awhile to get our food. It was just OK.

The specialty pancakes are amazing! The rice served with breakfast is really good. The port sausage was pretty good. The spam was amazing! For sure get the specialty pancakes!

They have an amazing selection of breakfast items, that taste delicious. They also have extremely good prices. Some of the cheapest food I've found on island, especially considering they have better quality food than L&L. My biggest complaints is their lack of open hours, and how it is CASH ONLY The dining room is extremely tiny, so I usually order take out. One of my favorite places in Laie

  • Leah E.

The Yelp Gods are going to get angry because I keep giving out 5 star reviews. But Hukilau Cafe is serving up breakfast as close to my grandparents cooking that I can find. (BTW- my grandparents were born and raised on Oahu but now live on the mainland). The sweet bread French toast is such a well composed dish of sweet, salty, buttery, syrupy. I'm not a huge French toast fan but the beautiful egg wash got my attention so I had to try. Perfection! The fried rice plate was 'ono. Good flavor. Not the best fried rice on the island but like I said it reminds me of my papa's. My overhard eggs hit the spot and I chopped up my Portuguese sausage into little bit size bits which brought just the right amount of flavor to the dish. I. Ate. It. All.

As a main lander visiting Hawaii, I wanted the 'authentic' Hawaiian experience. I hate people that go to a different place but still eat at a Denny's or IHOP. When I went to Hawaii, I wanted that good-good, that okie-doke and I think I found it at Hukilau Cafe. It's a small non-flashy place on your way to the North Shore and the food was incredible. Incredible in how simple and delicious it was. I went two separate times on my trip to Hawaii and both times the service was awesome. I only went for breakfast but I hear their burgers are awesome as showcased on that Man Vs. Food episode. MUST TRY: Moco Loco, Macadamia Nut Pancakes, and the Portuguese sausage

  • Cornelia P.

My hubby and I came here for sentimental purposes for breakfast but the food is really nothing special. It's actually not that good at all. So just a warning. The service is still great though and it has a cute local atmosphere to it you don't find anywhere else then in places like this on Oahu. TIP: CASH ONLY!!!

The banana pancakes were the best pancakes i've EVER had! The people working there were so friendly and sweet and made us feel so welcome. Our lady even asked my boyfriend if he wanted a refill of coffee to go and gave us BOTH iced coffee! We also got Portuguese sausage, potatoes, and eggs over easy. I wasn't a fan of the potatoes- they weren't crispy so i wish i had chose rice or toast instead. I wasnt a fan of the sausage- but i think i just don't like portuguese sausage. I will order a loco moco and banana pancakes when I come back (i cant wait!).

I used to live on the North Shore (almost a decade ago) and miss a lot about my time there. The Hukilau Cafe is definitely on that list. I have been back many times (to Oahu) and always, ALWAYS make it back here for a couple meals. The banana pancakes are great, as is the Loco Moco. Make sure you know their hours before driving over

I love hukilau cafe. I got the hungry Hawaiian with my girlfriend and we split it to have a delicious breakfast that wasn't too heavy. Usually I get the Portuguese sausage with eggs and rice and it's totally delicious. I also like they're French toast if you're in that kinda mood. A classic place to eat with great food.

One of the only breakfast places out in the North Shore! It's a small little joint with 10 tables at most, they only accept cash, and the restaurant is literally a tiny shack...but don't let any of those things deter you! I first found out about this place from Man vs. Food, so I knew I had to come here on my recent trip to Hawaii! We came here for breakfast twice on our trip and ordered a variety of things each time. I definitely think the Hungry Hawaiian is the best deal - it's your traditional breakfast, but on steroids! It comes with three eggs, two proteins (spam, ham, Portuguese sausage, bacon, pork links, etc.), rice or potatoes, and pancakes or toast. I definitely recommend the pork links over all the other proteins because I'm not a big fan of preserved meats and Portuguese sausage is way too sweet for my tastebuds. The pork links are your traditional breakfast sausage links and one portion size consists of four links, which is very filling! The eggs, toast, and potatoes were all very standard. I wish they would serve hash browns instead of potatoes, but then again...I want that to happen at EVERY breakfast place I've ever been to. The real standouts are undoubtedly the pancakes and the Hukilau burger! I read the banana pancakes are really popular, but I opted to order the macadamia nut pancakes instead. They seriously serve some of the lightest and fluffiest pancakes I've ever tasted in my life! They chop up the nuts, so you get a little bit of buttery crunch in each fluffy bite...and plus, the nuts are added protein, so they kept me feeling pretty full all day long! The Hukilau burger is insanely delicious and ginormous! It's basically a thick hamburger patty, topped with thinly sliced BBQ teriyaki beef (like the kind you get in a BBQ mix plate), sweet carmelized onions, lettuce, tomato, a fried egg, and cheese. The teriyaki beef really adds a burst of flavor and sweetness to the already juicy textures of the burger. This is literally an explosion of goodness in your mouth! Hands down, one of the best burgers I've ever eaten, although definitely heavy and fatty. I should note that you can't even order the burger until after 10am, but it's well worth waiting for! Overall, this is a great little cafe that serves delicious food on disposable styrofoam plates, haha! Don't expect too much in terms of looks, cleanliness, etc. You won't find any of that here, but instead, you will find a unique little hidden gem in Oahu!

Great neighbourhood breakfast and lunch place. The food is simple and delicous. The staff is charming and courteous. Parking can be a problem and there are lines. It's in a residential neighbourhood, so don't be a dick!

I ordered the Fried Rice and egg's breakfast along with a half order of Old Hawaiian Style French Toast. Kelly ordered her usual of Chocolate Chip Pancakes with a side of bacon. Food came to our table fairly quickly, which was good because I was starving. First up is the Fried Rice! The portion was good, but the Fried Rice tasted burnt. Went through the entire plate and couldn't get away from that burnt taste. French Toast time, the French Toast was pretty tasty but nothing special. The food was filling, but wasn't something that I'd brag about...

My family and I recently stayed at a beach house down Laie side during the summer, just before school started up again as a big last hurrah. During our last day in Laie, my family and I felt like picking up breakfast to give us a break from cooking all week. With a few clicks on my phone, we were able to find this place. We were kind of skeptical because of the reviews, some good, some bad. But hey, you'll never know unless you give it a try yourself right? My sister and I jumped in our car and drove the 5 minute drive from our beach house to Hukilau Cafe. We got a little lost since it's kind of in the residential area. Parking, you have to watch the signs.. some parking is only for the convenience store located next to the Hukilau Cafe. There were reviews saying the girl working the front was rude. I don't know if they replaced her or if she was the same girl but the girl that helped us was anything BUT rude. She was patient, answered our questions and didn't give us any attitude at all. We ordered enough food for an army but the wait for our food was not long at all. We got pancakes, corned beef hash, french toast, bacon and eggs and all this other stuff. It was sooo good. We took our food back home to the rest of the family and we all enjoyed our food in silence. The pancakes were macadamia nut. Usually I'm used to the macadamia nuts all over the pancakes, but this one was just on the top, and they usually give you the special syrup for the pancakes but you just get regular syrup. It was fine, no biggy, but if you're expecting the special syrup, keep that in mind. Price was good, I've uploaded a picture of the menu and all of our food so go ahead and take a look.

There are some places you go to just you feel you should with no really rational reasoning behind it. The Hukilau Cafe is one of those places. The food is good but nothing to really write home about. The Loco Moco with grilled onions tastes the way a Loco Moco should. I didn't get to try the Hukilau Burger which is what this place is famous for but I hear it's good. The staff is very friendly and that's always nice. I wouldn't mind coming back here but I would not under any circumstances stand in line to get in. We came after a round of golf at nearby Turtle Bay at around 1pm on a Wednesday. Perfect! In and out in half an hour with full bellies. Oh and this is NOT the same Hukilau Cafe in the movie 50 First Dates that made the cafe so popular. They used the name of the cafe but shot it somewhere else.

Very good. I got the Hawaiian style French toast ( French toast with a sweet bread base) and fried rice and my husband got the loco moco (two hamburger patties on a bed of rice with two eggs and gravy). We were both very happy with our meals. Service was very quick and the staff were friendly. Great atmosphere, would go again.

Came here for a quick stack of french toast, which was so good. All of the food that the other people were eating looked very good too. The only problem is the parking. It is on the street and can be hard to find.

This is one of the greatest restaurants not only on the island of Oahu but in the entire world. The burger named after the restaurant is the most amazing things I have ever tasted. With an egg and Terri beef along with cheese and a hamburger patty the huge creation has a taste unlike any other burger ever. The place has won numerous awards and been featured in movies as well as on TV. The mix plate and loco moco are legendary and the prices are so low and haven't changed in a decade. Few things to note, they close early taking last orders for sit in around 1:40 and take out around 1:55pm. They are a cash only business and ATM's are limited on that side of the island, and they are closed on Mondays( heart breaking to drive out there with family and friends in tow to learn they are closed Mon) We love this place and all the caring staff and owners!

My wife and I were on our way to the north shore when we decided breakfast couldn't wait, so we hopped on Yelp and found this place along our route and said "Why not?". We were both extremely happy we found this place. It is small and fairly unassuming but the food is great. We had the Fried Rice, Eggs and Portuguese Sausage. The flavors were everything I wanted in a hearty breakfast, a nice runny egg soaking into the fried rice and pieces of sausage. I highly recommend you stop by if you're in the area. I know we will return the next time we visit Oahu.

Great little neighborhood restaurant. We didn't have to wait for a seat, but the place is small and I could imagine the wait could get long during busy times. The service was friendly and they had a pretty good menu mostly of Hawaiian favorites. I opted for the loco moco which was a sizable portion and delicious. Also tried the ono fish which was fresh and tasty as well as the chicken katsu. I with I had room to try one of the teriyaki topped burgers which sounded delicious. It's cash only so be prepared. Although we found a spot, I would imagine parking may be a challenge as its right in the middle of a nice little neighborhood. Also, they don't serve alcohol (could have used a beer after the great time at Keana farms zip lining!). It's not far from Kualoa Ranch and Keana Farms - stop and eat here if you are heading to either! A nice place with a friendly atmosphere and great food!

Worth the trip. We came with a big group and everyone tried different items and when all was done we all left full and satisfied. Banana pancakes were fabulous, corned beef was awesome and fried rice with egg was good but only if you like a lot of fried rice (it's a plate full). One negative my table had ants and they seemed to like me...

Amazing breakfast! We had pork chops and eggs, fried rice and eggs, supreme omelette and banana pancakes. The portions are very generous and we are happy to eat leftovers tomorrow morning. It will be our regular spot when here! Icing on the cake is the very nice staff!

One of the few places on North Shore near Laie we could find that serves breakfast. Jack Johnson wrote a song about their banana pancakes. Try them, they are delicious. I so wish, however that they served coconut syrup with them. I would be willing to pay extra! They have several local breakfast dishes on the menu that are worth trying as well. The fried rice with eggs was great!!

  • Tiffany N.

The only problem I have with Hukilau Cafe is that I want to eat their fried rice and eggs with bacon for breakfast everyday and that isn't in the cards for me what with living in Denver and all that. The restaurant itself is fairly small. When you arrive and the tables are full (as there likely will be) you just walk up to the counter by the kitchen and write your name on their list. Then you go wait outside. When a table is ready they'll call your name. They serve food fast so I don't think waits get to be too long, whether you're waiting for your table or are at your table waiting for food. Most importantly, everything we ate was delicious. It's definitely an inexpensive place, especially for Oahu. However, it is cash only so bring your dollars. If you are on the North Shore it's easily worth visiting, for breakfast or lunch.

We got right in, but there was a wait for people showing up behind us. Waitress was fantastic. There was a party of 10 seated at at the same time, but she got our order in first. Also, due to the large portion size, she made a great suggestion for my wife about an item not only is the menu. Food was fast and delightful. Very rustic, but a true local experience.

  • Emily L.

Went to Hukilau Cafe for lunch today. Had just missed the time for breakfast. The waitress said they had just stopped serving breakfast a few minutes after we walked in. Yet a few people that came after us, were served breakfast. Even though we were served lunch, the hamburger steak was really good.

Just missed their breakfast!! =( Had the coconut shrimp. Excellent deal for the amount and size of the shrimp. Perfectly fried and delicious! My friend had the Moco Loco....WOW! If you aren't hungry maybe you should order the bowl. Delicious! Family run and fresh juice. Would go back again!

So what is the Hukilau Cafe? If you've seen the movie 50 First Dates, it features a cute breakfast joint by the beach. If you've seen Man v Food, they visit a the hip burger joint on the North Shore. If you've seen my review, it's just a grungy diner in the middle of some neighborhood. After an hour drive over here for lunch, we arrive to find that they're cash only. After an additional drive to the ATM, we finally get to eat. My chicken katsu was good but they were a little skimpy with the sauce. The Hukilau burger was the one featured on TV, it comes with teriyaki beef, grilled onions, and a fried egg. It was good but not exactly TV worthy.

Ordered the fried rice and egg with portugese sausage, and the loco moco. Everything was pretty bland, and overly salty? how do reach such a poor mix? BLAND AND OVERLY SALTY? haha Couldn't finish anything, except for the sausage. But sausage is hard to mess up (especially when its probably store bought). I would pass this place up, and just go to the nearest LnL. Better food there, and for a better deal as well. Hukilau Cafe is also quite a bit out of the way from anything else. Go up a little bit more north east, and you'll hit the FOOD TRUCK HAVEN.

If I could give a 0 rating I would. This is by far the worst food experience I have ever had in my life traveling both nationally and internationally. Upon arriving there were 4-5 tables open. We sat down and we were advised that we couldn't sit down. So we needed to add our name to a sign in sheet. We were 3rd. One waitress never sat the 2 groups in front of us, thus forcing one group to leave after waiting about 15 minutes with still 4-5 tables open. That moved us up to number 2 on the wait list. Since they weren't sitting people since they are so slow I asked if we could order take out. After that the next people waiting also left since in the 15 mins there no one was being seated (and you couldn't seat yourself they told us). Since we were now next in line for seats I asked if we could dine in. The cashier said ok and I left my name on the sign in sheet. After that a group of 6 tourists came in and now 5 tables were open. They were allowed to seat themselves and move tables together while we still stood and waited to be seated. At this point I told the cashier this was unprofessional in my opinion. At that point I got excuses from both the waitress and cashier. I asked for my refund which I did get. They said since I asked for a takeout I couldn't be seated even though in informed the cashier who takes the orders that I changed my mind who said it was okay. Maybe this place has the best food in the world. But no food is worth the poor service, long wait times when you have many tables open, and the abundance of excuses. Restaurant 101, of this happens this is how you handle it. Sir/Ma'am, we apologize, we can seat your right now. Once again we apologize for not seating you. Thank you for coming. You don't feed your customers lame excuses such as, "well you ordered take out. You can't seat yourself but tourists can. Well your name isn't on the waitlist (even though it was). In my opinion this isn't a place you guys should go to. Papa Ole's has superior food and service. Giovanni's Shrimp Truck has superior service. Geez McDonalds has better service. Hopefully their owner reads this and provides some training to improve their service and professionalism.

I love this place ! During my stay at turtle bay I ate here twice. I had to come back for their delicious banana pancakes! They're so Ono! I understand that the seating is fairly poor and is in need of new furniture but the quality of their food masks all of that! It's a cute mom and pop shop close to the hukilau beach (which I reccomend you stop by after). Definitely a must to come here if you're staying at the north shore

Your classic local joint. Good plate lunches, reasonable prices, good service, hole-in-the-wall. Left town early to head to Hukilau Cafe and the Polynesian Cultural Center. Arrived around 11 and the place was half full. Its a hole in the wall in the classic Hwaiian sense which means the paint may be peeling, the furniture old, but the food's usually pretty good. Greeted immediately and offered any table. At 11, we could either breakfast or lunch. Score!!! One loco moco, one Hukilau breakfast, one Hukilau burger and one Laie plate lunch. Portions are huge. Everything was great. My loco moco was one of the bet ever. The Hukilau breakfast comes with a WHOLE can of vienna sausages. LOL. Only in Hawaii. The Hukialu burger was big with a teri beef patty and a scrambled egg. Like the Laie plate lunch had chicken, teri beef and more. Way too much to eat. Only downside was the french fries which tasted like cardboard, probably reheated frozen. But the plate lunches broke 'da mouth. Four of us out the door for around $40 (no drinks), great deal. Whenever we're up this way, Hukilau is a must stop.

Heard good things about this place so decided to go have a try. Ordered the BBQ mix plate and was surprised. I don't like L&L but L&L BBQ mix plate is definitely better. Go figure. Maybe next time I'll order something different and hope it tastes nice.

This review is for the Hukilau Burger. This is the best burger I have ever had in my entire life...no joke. I'm not a huge fan of burgers and never really look forward to having them. However, their Hukilau burger is seriously amazing. It's worth the drive from the other side of the island. It has a burger patty, tender marinated teri beef, cheese, onions, a fried egg, tomato, and lettuce. It's mouthgasmic. Mac salad is good as well. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays. It's usually not very crowded. Located in a neighborhood so you'll be able to find street parking. They start serving burgers at 11am. You will not regret it!

Low 3. There is nothing special about the old here. I got the Portuguese sausage, scrambled eggs, and fried rice plate. The fried rice was very bland. It tasted like they didn't use eggs in the fried rice. The only meat I could detect in it was ham. Nothing else. Would've been better with fish cake, spam, charsiu and/or Portuguese sausage. The food was way overpriced for what you get. I would never come out of my way for this place.

I had the banana pancakes, bacon, and an egg with coffee. The pancakes were amazing and the bacon was cooked perfectly! Coffee and egg were pretty standard. Cash only!! But, just in case you didn't see this, they hold your I.D. while you run to the ATM. :) The employees are very friendly.

The place is small and cash only and has a only few hours open a day for breakfast and lunch- BUT who cares when they have the most delicious burger ever! You cant come here and not try the HUKILAU BURGER!! Its a must try and believe me you will enjoy ever second of it! I will be sad the day i leave the island and not be able to drive here for the yummy burger. It takes me an hour to get to the hukilau cafe from where i live but its all worth it!!

This is for sure a hole in the wall local spot. It was in the middle of a neighbor hood. They only take cash so make sure you have that on hand. They stop serving breakfast at 11am sharp. I had the coconut pancakes but I didn't know it was actually full of shaved coconut. I am not a fan of that but I do like the taste of coconut and these really didn't taste like coconut at all. I also got OJ and a side of pork links which were both good. They serve the food on paper plates. The service was quick and fast. I think regular pancakes or blueberry pancakes would be better. If we are ever back in this area I would stop in again.

It's a little dive-y but the food is good and fast and the portions are enormous. My group went for lunch one day and had to go back for breakfast the next day and another time before we left.

The food at this hole in the wall restaurant was disappointing and highly overrated. Loco Mocos served at Zippy's are better, which speaks volumes. Their only claim to fame is the fact that the fat guy from the Man vs. Food show stopped by to film his show (which by the way was canceled). I don't see this place winning any food awards anytime soon. Tourists that don't know any better might like this place. Those that want good local food should skip the lines at this dirty, ant infested shack and go elsewhere.

The food here is always SUPER ONO! I enjoy the BBQ mix plate best.. the beef and chicken are perfectly seasoned and tender, even the mac salad tastes good and the people who work there are always really nice. The only reason(s) they don't have five stars: -Parking is rather lousy -Water is self-serve and cups are small (I have problems moving around lately due to injury of the back and being pregnant so besides just being annoying I find it painfully inconvenient) -No refill's for soda -Cash only However, the food really is worth the hassle when you're willing to take the drive. So definitely keep that in mind ^.~

My bf and I went here for breakfast around 10am on a Saturday and there were many locals as well as tourists. We ordered the Fried Rice & Eggs and the Hungry Hawaiian. It was de-li-cious and we were both was SUPER full afterward. This cafe had a rustic, local feel to it which we enjoyed very much! -Cash Only -Street Parking -Minutes away from the beach

For all the hype and talk about how great this place is, I am beyond disappointed. Everyone recommended the loco moco and it was probably the worst I've ever eaten! The patty was cooked so much till the meat became charred. Not only was the patty crunchy and dry, the over easy eggs were completely cooked as well. I know this place was featured on man vs food and diners, drive ins, and dives but I would not recommend this place. Service sucks too. We sat there for 15 minutes with no one to take our order. My wife finally had to go and order at the counter. What a waste of money here.

Wow. What a great find. This place is an amazing local spot. It's cash only but their food is some good hawaiian food. Two words: MOCO LOCO. I wish I can eat here every day!

I'm in love with the Laie Mix Plate. It's love in a box or on a plate. That chicken katsu, beef teri (beef teri that good is so rare), and hamburger patty with rice and mac salad is something I want to eat as I type this. It's so good. Stayed with friends a 5 minute walk away and I was there about 5 times for breakfast and lunch over that time (I had 2 Laie Mix Plates and 3 breakfasts). The breakfasts are ok. But for me, it's lunch and the stuff that I can't get here in Canada that just gets me. The decor is what it is, but you don't come here for that. It's the food, and I just can't wait to get back to Laie to eat at the Hukilau. And to visit my friends. ;)

We heard about this place because my future sister and law and her fiance saw this place on Man VS Food. We came here for lunch and there was a slight wait because it was the lunchtime rush hour. The parking is pretty horrendous because we had to loop around 5 different times to find a place to park. We didn't mind because we were pumped to order the loco moco! We ordered 3 loco mocos and a hukilau burger. The portions for the loco moco were HUGEEE. I probably could have shared one with someone, but I didn't realize it was going to be so big. Everyone thought the food was good! I enjoyed my loco moco, but one person didn't have the loco moco sit well in their tummy. The actual establishment is pretty plain and it would be a plus if Hukilau Cafe made an investment with the appearance of the restaurant. The food comes on styrofoam plates and plastic silverware which is good for easy cleanup, but it's not very "green." One star off for the parking situation and another star off for one person in our party getting sick.

I wish I could give NO STARS!! As I sit inside this place this very second, I have watched everyone around me get their food including my own table before I even got mine. All I ordered was a simple omelet. The service is rude and ignores their customers and refuses to help but argues instead. I will warn anyone and everyone I met to meet come here !!!!! Disgusting. Also clean your cups and tables. Someone should call the board of health or the BBB.

Huge servings, great price. Can't go wrong with this place! Featured prominently on 50 First Dates and Man vs. Food, it's worth the drive to Laie. I was taken here by my client when we had to go for a site inspection at BYU. We went for breakfast - I got the corned beef hash and fried rice. Can't beat the price - $6-7 for a huge heaping plate of food that I couldn't finish. The place closes at 2, so if you want to go for lunch, don't dilly dally!!! I'm thinking about waking up early and making the drive up there this weekend again, just to eat there. . . yes, its just that good!

I love their breakfast menu. Link sausage is my favorite. They even have a picture of Adam Sandler and Drew Berrymore from that one dumb movie. Not a big fan of their lunch menu, but it's whatever. The owner, Kalani, is very nice.

Hukilau Burger and Loco Moco are awesome! Service is lacking a bit... Just plan on lax service and the food taking a little while and then enjoy the tastes of Hawaii. We will be back!

It was worth going to this place, especially since we were staying only blocks away! Not a fan of them serving everything on Styrofoam but apparently it's the norm on the islands. The macadamia nut pancakes were great. The crunch made desirable what would have otherwise been very plain, but tasty pancakes. My husband loved the hungry hawiian(any excuse to eat more spam) and my mom had the loco moco. I was surprised that she seemed to enjoy it, albeit out of her comfort zone. After reading reviews I had expected poor service, but our service experience was great! Worth a try just for the chill vibe and quick service.

Anyone that rates this more than a two star must like flies crawling all over their food. The hukilau cafe is small and dirty but not in a "cool, local" kind of way. I will start by saying that the hukilau burger was very good. That was the end of anything positive with this experience. In between swatting the flies off my food I enjoyed every bite. The French fries tasted like cold ore Ida fries, the pop was flat, and the macaroni salad was bland. The service was pretty slow also.

The cafe in 50 First Dates was named after this place, but obviously wasn't filmed here. On our 2013 trip, this was close to where we were staying so we stopped in for breakfast one day. I think it was a Sunday. People waiting for seats right after we got a table instantly, good timing. Very small and cozy. The helpings are massive and very delicious. Super fast service and they were very nice and friendly. Will definitely go back here again.

Yes, we watched Man vs. Food and wanted to try Hukilau Cafe, but for the Hukilau burger, NOT the Loco Moco. I haven't tried the Loco Moco, but it just looked gross, and Loco means crazy, and it also looked like it's mission was to clog my arteries right up with egg yolky-ricey-beef balls. And honestly, I wanted the Steak Sandwich, but they were out of steak. Pssshh! It was only 12:30 or so. So I had the burger with fries, macaroni salad, and Passion-Orange Juice. The burger is a classic cheese-burger with a slice of teriyaki beef and a fried egg topped with lettuce and a tomato. The beef and egg add a chewy texture to the burger, kind of like bacon, but saltier and without the crunch. Extra points for the cheese being melted over the egg and beef, not just slapped on there! And passion-orange juice is delicious. Such a tasty combo of fruit juices! My parents got the Hikilau platter with teriyaki beef, rice, macaroni salad and shrimp. The said it was delicious, and from across the table, it looked delicious and smelled delicious. The cafe is in a weird spot; off the highway in a neighborhood, and little folding sign directs you to it, but it is easy to miss. Inside, it is decorated with a bunch of sports memorabilia, including a framed Steelers 'Terrible Towel' and passes to Super Bowl XLIII - apparently some local high schoolers were on the Steelers and Cardinals that day. And the prices are spot on - like $6 for the burger and fries. If I went back to that side of the island, I would definitely stop by again for the Steak Sandwich!

Grew up going to this place and I always enjoyed the Hungry Hawaiian or the fried rice plate w/the choice of my meat and eggs. As an adult I'm now a vegetarian so when I come here options are limited but still so yummy!!! Laie's finest!!! You got to have lunch & breakfast here!!

Best burger I ever had thus far. THE HUKILAU BURGER. Burger patty + Teri beef + Fried egg + Lettuce + Tomato + Cheese + Onions (I didn't have any) + Buns = WOWWEEWOW!!! Biting into this burger was pure ecstasy. Never have I had a burger that felt so light and fluffy in my mouth. Perhaps, the fried egg contributed to the fluffiness part? Usually, when I eat burgers ... they leave me feeling bloated and heavy. But not the Hukilau Burger. Mysteriously, this mixture of deliciousness relaxed my hunger leaving me with an easy and comfortable fullness. (This particular story was from my experience back in 2009) Even the lady at the counter and the cook were so friendly when my brother and I were there. My brother told them I was visiting him from the mainland, and the lady at the counter noticed my Chargers jersey. Then we started talking about NFL football. And even the cook allowed me to try his refreshing ice cold melon drink. Delightful! Mahalo Hukilau Cafe for providing me the most tasty burger. Mahalo to my older brother for taking me to Hukilau Cafe to try the burger. Mahalo to Adam Richman from Man vs. Food for introducing the burger to his fans like me.

The Hukilau cafe, but not the one you see in the movie 50 First Dates. It's a very small mom & pop hole in the wall diner located in a neighborhood in Laie. You have to park in the street. It's a very old kind of run down place, but it's definitely a must! Oh & it was featured on Man Vs Food if i'm not mistaken. I can't believe how cheap this place is! It's so cheap that it's ridiculous. By the way, cash only! I ordered the hukilau burger that consisted of a hamburger patty, a slice of teriyaki beef, fried egg, mayo, grilled onions, cheese, lettuce, & tomatoes on top of a sesame bun. OMG this was so good! I felt so guilty eating it. It's so big i had to eat it with a knife & fork. My husband ordered a loco moco & aside from the one at the Pineapple Room, this one gets my vote for one of the best on the island! If i'm in the area, this is where i'm eating!

We stayed about a 5 minute walk away from the Hukilau cafe during our vacation and came here for breakfast our first morning. We arrived at about 7:05 AM (up early due to the time difference) and had to wait a few minutes for the cafe to open. Service was excellent. We had breakfast (I had typical bacon and eggs, and my husband had a more traditional Hawaiian breakfast with rice). Both were decent, and were very large portions. Pretty typical breakfast, great service made it 4 star.

I was visiting Turtle Bay and didn't feel like paying $25 for a subpar breakfast buffet. Instead, I took a 10 minutes to drive here and enjoyed some authentic Hawaiian breakfast food. I had their Loco Moco with spam and rice, and it was absolutely fantastic. It felt weird having rice for breakfast, but with the gravy, it works so well. The eggs were cooked perfectly as well, and the spam was tasty. I think I am a spam believer now! The place gets crazy busy, so try to avoid the rush hour. The parking situation is a little strange too, but don't be afraid to park in strange ditches. It's totally worth it.

Loco Moko Done right. Also their "Hukilau Burger" is just flat out ridiculous and awesome. Egg, teri beef, burger, cheese, lettuce, tomato, make it the best damn burger I've had. Not to mention there prices are VERY reasonable

Hubby found this place thanks to Man vs Food. We love our foodie shows! Anyways! It was well worth the drive for us from Kapolei to Laie. If nothing else given how cheap our meal was made the extra gas we spent for a burger and fries worth it! We are in search of the best burger on the island - this right now may very well be the winner! According to both me AND the hubby! And they are cheap! We got 2 hukilau burgers and fries and I think it was like 12 dollars. Nice! Keep in mind they are cash only though - so make sure you have that with you. The food was AMAZING. Incredibly fresh, it came out very warm! And sooo good. That hukilau burger and I could have quite the friendship. Its really sad its quite so far from where I live otherwise I'd be here everyday. Seriously. Service was okay. Yes, you do go get your own water from the jug in the corner. Who cares though? Our server was kind and friendly and that is much more important to me. She was also decently quick given she was the only server and the place was full. If you are expecting someone to wait on your every need - don't go here, it is not that kind of place. And you DON'T need that kind of place to have a damn good meal! Parking is just along the street which can be a bit of a pain. And I'll agree its a bit disappointing for those who come to the restaurant to see it as it was in 50 first dates because it really looks nothing like it. But I didn't come for this reason - so no hard feelings here. All in all - go here! I will come back often and definitely plan to bring out of state visitors here!

We ate here several times during our North Shore Hawaiian Vacation. The food is so great. The girls very sweet. We had various items. Loco Moco with sautéed mushrooms and onions, Spam Loco Moco, and the Banana pancakes were the favorites! The pancakes, holy cow. It's like eating fried banana bread with maple syrup on it. They aren't open Sundays or Mondays. The parking is tight. The wait is on occasion long. This isn't the Ritz, but, is so much cleaner than most of the places we tried in the Laie, Hauula area, so I'm grading on a curve. Food sanitation is not what a mainlander might expect.

Nothing fancy here but this little hole-in-the-wall Hawaiian Cafe is a treasure! Stopped here while vacationing in Hawaii and absolutely loved it. We were looking for some traditional Hawaiian food and they nailed it They are apparently known for having the best burger on the island but we passed that up for the Loco Moco special and the pork plate lunch. Great value, great service, and great food! Will definitely return if I'm ever in the area!

My friends and I wanted to try the mac pancakes since we were in the area. Unfortunately, we missed breakfast, so I ordered the shrimp burger. My friends ordered the chicken katsu and Hukilau burger. All of the food came out quick and was very tasty. I wish I was hungry enough to order the Loco Moco as well. Will definitely come back here. Overall: good food, quick service, relaxed atmosphere.

Hukilau café was only a block away from the last rental home that we stayed in during my last visit to Oahu and we always found ourselves eating there because everything is just so good! I always come back to this place when I get a craving for a loco moco. The gravy is so ono! Hukilau burger is also a favorite. ONOLICIOUS!

Located directly across the street from Hukilau Beach, Hukilau Cafe is as much a historical site as it is a restaurant-cafe. It offers a nice variety of plates to satisfy one's belly from breakfast to lunch. Not to mention, the plates are inexpensive and the portions are large. What else could you ask for? Personal favorites: Loco Moco plate, Hukilau Burger with fries, Kalua Pork plate, and Pulled Pork plate.

Being that I was raised in Hawaii. Not a big fan of loco moco but my friend from San Fran was visiting and he's never been to Hawaii or had loco moco! I remembered this was on man vs food and 50 first date so I took him here to try authentic loco moco and not our plain L&L kind. The place is hard to find!! I had to use my phone GPS to locate it! The outside looks like a normal place blended well with houses. Inside is tiny and like family kind seating. People are nice! It's CASH only though! They serve loco moco with mushroom and onions! awesome burgers! personally I don't care for any lol I just took the long 1 hr drive from home just for my friend to try :) Finally can say I've been here! 4 stars cause Im so used to my city life in town that in the summer it's so hot and muggy on this Side and them accepting only cash. I would recommend tourist to come here if they're already on this side but if you live here it's not worth the long drive! There's also no parking since its a "hole in a wall" kinda place.

The Hukilau burger was very interesting, and I'd have another. I had them hold the mayo and that might have been a mistake as it could have pulled the flavors together. My wife ordered the bbq chicken and enjoyed it, though it turned out to be teriyaki. She wants to go back for the Loco Moco. My kids both liked their plain cheeseburgers, and their fries were fine. Cash only, but super cheap. Contrary to other reviews, I didn't see a single fly. Maybe they're seasonal. You can serve yourself water, and they have plenty of other drink soft drink options.

Stepped in and instantly loved the place. The relaxed decor, the smiling wait help and great smells. Picked up the menus and was impressed by having a choice of lunch or breakfast and the prices seemed like it was dated about 10-15 years ago. 5.25 for a gourmet burger and 7.25 for a full sized gravy covered 2 egg loco moco. The loco moco's crown is the gravy and guess what, it was good, straight up good. We got 2 hukilau burgers, 1 loco moco, 2 side orders of fries for 22 bucks. 22 bucks?? YES, I said 22 bucks. What ask you is in a hukilau burger? Well, a fried egg, tomato/lettuce/ onions, cheese, teri beef slice and all on a soft bun. SO good and the perfect mix of sweet teri sauce and salty cheese. ONO! You might pass this place if you blink so look for the sign and follow it around the roundabout and you will see it. Find it and you will be happy you did. SERIOUSLY, you will. I can WAIT to try the other food there. Updates will be in order. BOOM! 065/365 burgernessgoodness yelp challenge!

If you're in the area it's a good place to go for breakfast - good portions good price Cash only and just simple good breakfast place BUT I think it's HIGHLY unnecessary to drive all the way up to north shore just to come to this place. It's breakfast - bacon, sausage, egg, rice, gravy, pancakes, french toast, orange juice Don't drive for an hour to get that when you can just drive out to dennys

There is no one on this planet who could write a bad review for this place. Even if their food sucked arse. I swear. We drove out to Laie and decided to stop in for a try. I have lived in the islands for most of my life and have never been here. Go figgah...What's worse is, I NEVER in a million years would have found this place without the assistance of GPS or someone who knows where it is. Its one of those little secrets you tuck in your back pocket and don't tell anyone about for fear of the word getting out. It's smack dab in the middle of a residential neighborhood. House, house, house, Hukilau Cafe, house, house, house. That being said, there is no parking lot. It's all street, baby. Good luck with that. We got there at around 11:30. Apparently, this might have been good, or not. I think we missed breakfast, but we also beat the lunch crowd. Barely. But, we were able to find parking right outside the door. As soon as we walked in we were greeted so warmly, I felt her voice hug me from the inside out. She never stopped hugging me the whole time we were there. Our waitress took good care of us and when we told her we were Hukilau "virgins," she made recommendations. I listened but it didn't matter, I knew what I wanted. I came for their legendary loco moco. My hungrier half also seemed to have his mind set. He saw grilled ahi on the menu and zoned in. In a matter of minutes, we had our grinds. Photo opp! =) Then we dug in. It's not their fault they get 3 stars. I want to give them more. But here's the problem: I think their loco moco is legendary because they serve it to tourists who have never had it before and find the idea of the combination a new novelty. I am not that demographic. So, I'm fairly sure the hamburger was not fresh or homemade. If it was homemade, it definitely wasn't made well. It had no flavor to it, covered in gravy or not. She was so sweet though and offered me another bowl of gravy...a bowl on the side...of gravy! That is what you call GRAVY ALL OVA! My hungrier half liked his ahi, but it was a simple grilled ahi. As she said, "no nothing...we just tchrow yem on da grill li'dat!" For those pidgin-impaired readers, it means there is no salt, pepper, or seasoning of any kind on it. Just grilled fish. Served with rice and tartar sauce. It was good though. The food was ridiculously reasonable. And the service was absolutely phenomenal. It was even fun to watch the staff interact with others. They were all so nice to everyone. Everyone. Most of the people that come in are locals from the area--the mailman, construction workers, etc. and the staff knows them all by name and what their preference of food is. When tourists came in, they were treated with the same aloha. It's so nice to see that people like them make the vacation experience a memorable one for our visitors. By the time we were finished eating, we felt the need to excuse ourselves because the crowd was starting to pour in and there were no longer any empty tables, but people waiting for some of the Hukilau's experience. We will definitely be back there to try one of the recommendations next time, or even breakfast, rather than stick to our guns about what we wanna eat when we get there. Maybe next time, they get upgraded to a 5-star rating. A hui hou...

I have only eaten at the Hukilau Cafe once and have been dying to go back! Last summer we found this little restaurant by recommendation of a friend. My husband and I ordered cheeseburgers and fries and they were delicious! Also, the price is amazing! For two cheeseburgers and two fries, it was under $12! The only bad thing about the Hukilau Cafe is that it is so far away from where we live and the hours are short. But if you are ever up in Laie, this is a must stop! Check the hours and plan accordingly. Once you have eaten here once, you will be dying to go back!

Came here for breakfast since we planned to spend a whole day in North Shore and plus, we heard about it from 50 First Dates. The pancakes are delightfully fluffly, bacon is crispy, and eggs were tender. It was a satisfying homecooked breakfast. The waitress was very nice and accommodating.

If you're in the area Hukilau is a great spot for breakfast or brunch. It is really small so going with groups could be difficult. We went in for brunch my husband had the loco moco and it was huge. You get a lot of food for your money.

This is the first establishment I was taken to by friends after my great move to Hawaii. The Hukilau Cafe is located in an awkward spot. The building was quaint and cozy. I believe this is a wonderful place to bring the family out on a weekend breakfast. Not only is it inexpensive and affordable but the portion are REALLY great as well. Uniquely Hawaii for sure with local grinds and hospitality. I had the banana pancakes (local friends made fun of my pronunciation of banana) .. the meal was simple yet very delicious. It had some sort of nostalgic homemade feeling that makes me want to come back every Sunday. I would love to try the lunch meals as I have been noticing the rave reviews for Loco Mocos and burgers. Yum! Hope to be back up north soon for lunch at the Hukilau. I would definitely recommend Hukilau Cafe to anyone!

Great local food, terrible customer service. Our food came out fast and was great, but every time I go the servers act like we are putting them out by being there. So annoying. This place could do so much better if they got some happy people in there. I feel like it gives visitors such a bad impression of the locals here on the island.

This is your basic greasy spoon restaurant. The food was good, but not spectacular. The service was fine, but not impressive. Bonus points for being the only place that we saw SPAM on the menu on our whole trip.

I learned about the Hukilau Cafe from the Man vs Food challenge on the Food Network. The Loco Moco is very good and the flavor of the burger patty and gravy live up to all that it's hyped to be. The pancakes however were pale and undercooked. I would have sent them back but the service was so chilly except to returning locals that it was better to just put up and shut up.

We arrived here around 7:30am excited to check out the local breakfast spot. If you are looking for good local food, where you get a good value for your dollar read no farther and make your way to Hukilau; however if you want more detail, read on. It looks like an old house that was turned into a cafe, since it is in the middle of a little neighborhood. You walk in and seat yourself and have complimentary coffee at your table immediately. You almost feel at home here. He had: the hungry hawaiian breakfast with scrambled eggs, home fries (chopped potatoes with seasoning), Portuguese sausage, bacon, and toast. A LOT of food for less than $10. Not the healthiest meal, but a good comfort breakfast She had: Macadamia nut pancakes (short stack). Very simple, yet so tasty. The macadamia nuts were crushed up and well distributed so you could taste them in every bite. Large portion for the small order; could only finish 1 and it was the first meal of the day. Overall, a very satisfying meal out to a cafe that had a local feel from the minute you walked in until you left. Also, we wanted to make note that there is no tax and the coffee was complementary with breakfast as stated earlier.

Walked into the place because I am a fan of 50 First Dates and found out that there was an actual Hukilau Cafe because it was featured on the Food Network. At first, there wasn't that many parking areas around the restaurant. After finding a spot, I had to take a pic in front of the restaurant with the family. When I entered, I knew I wanted to try the loco moco and the Hukilau burgers. The loco moco is one of the best around. As for the hukilau burgers, it has a fried egg, tomato, lettuce, onions, cheese, a hamburger patty, a slice of teribeef, and a sesame seed bun. Ordered with fries. All the food was hot from the grill. Everthing added up to less than $20.00. Great food at a great price. Can't beat that. I saw other things on the menu that I wanted to try, so I guess I will be going there again soon. I actually used my GPS to find the place, but there is a small sign on the roadside that indicates where the restaurant is since it is in a residential area. It's like finding a treasure. I recommend this place to all locals and all tourists who want some local grinds.

Get the Hukilau Burger! The Hukilau Burger is the best burger I've ever had! The ladies that helped my husband and me were both super nice and didn't mind answering some questions about the area (which I'm sure they get every day). They made us feel at home! The area is very small with narrow streets so it's hard to find parking but we were there when it was empty so there was no problem. They are also kind of out in the middle of nowhere but totally worth the drive. If you don't have anything to do out that way I would still go!! Also it was so cheap! We had two burgers, and fries and bought a t-shirt for all under $30. It was great, I really hope we have a chance to go back!!

I seriously don't understand the rave about this place. I agree with most people, atmosphere is very "local" but the food was NOT that great, Ordered hamburger, cheeseburger, and a shrimpburger. Maybe it wasn't for my taste, but the burger meat (which is what people rave about?) tasted like meatloaf. I wanted a burger, not meatloaf. Shrimp burger was pretty good, but nothing for an incredible review.

Took advantage of the Memorial Day weekend to try another stop on the as featured on a food show tour. Off the main highway, there really wasn't a sign directing you to the restaurant. Next time as I travel east on Kamehameha Highway to Laie, I'll look for the Hukulau Beachpark on the left, and then take the next right onto Naniloa Loop. You'll see Hukilau Cafe on the left after the traffic circle. Casual small town ambience. Closest thing to a neighbor island cafe I've seen on Oahu! Tried the Hukilau Burger and got a loco moco bowl to go. Maybe it was the hype, but the Hukilau didn't get me excited. All the ingredients especially the teriyaki beef and fresh beef patty muddled each other up. The beef patty and gravy in the loco moco were allowed to shine. Very impressive. Definitely a great place to stop when you're up on the North Shore!

No parking, very nice staff, hukiloau burger and daily speial egg batter mahi. I actually liked this place the most out of most of the places we went. The lady was really nice. Felt like I'd been eating there a long time and we were regulars. It doesn't look anything like the restaurant from 50 first dates, but they did have a picture of it. Anyways I got the hukiloau burger which was a meet patty, teryaki beef and a friend egg. I'm down with any burgers that have eggs. So its good. The fries were crisp and good as well. The restaurant really isnt that nice, I think you would be just fine ordering to go and just going to the beach a block down and eating there. Definitely drop by if you have a chance.

My trip to Hawaii was a nonstop eat-fest, as I love Hawaiian grub-food. The ex-girlfriend wanted to stop by Hukilau Cafe because she loved 50 First Dates. As others have said, this place was NOTHING like the spot in the movie. Location, exterior, interior, nada. The spot in the movie was, unfortunately, created specifically for that movie and borrowed only the name. That said, Hukilau was decent. We made it a point to go out of our way to come to this end of the island, but if I could do it again, I'd save my gas, stay in Waikiki, and eat five more times at Rainbow Drive-In. The service was great, the food was OK. Unfortunately, the only stand-out memory of this place is getting out of the car and wondering,"Wait... this is it?"

Don't expect to see the place called Hukilau Cafe in the movie Fifty First Dates. That was built as a set at nearby Kualoa Ranch. This place is tiny, out of the way, and nonetheless worth any effort you have to go through to find it. We heard about it through a TV food show, but didn't have the famous Hukilau burger, or the loco moco-we went off script and had the pork and chicken combo. It was a mistake to order 2 meals. We could have gotten full sharing one. The portions are insanely huge. It's a great local spot and I wish I could have come back to sample breakfast. I will try my best next time I'm on Oahu! P.S. even though it's counter intuitive for a mainlander to have mac salad and rice on the same plate, give in and eat like the local kine-you can always double up on leafy greens when you get home.

$7 something for a loco moco? I think so! You get more than expected...trust me. I had to share it with my sister. I'm a fan of gravy and it was smothered all over the meat so just a heads up for all you non-gravy peeps. I also substituted the rice with fried rice and it was good, but I prefer regular rice. Bonus: You can say you went to the original cafe inspired by the movie "50 first dates".

My first visit here was on a spontaneous trip around the island. And I must say... The Hukilau Burger is insanely delicious! Enough said! I've also tried their roast pork plate! Bomb.com ! They no joke around with their portions. They give 'em! If you're ever on this side of the island, you MUST visit Hukilau Cafe!

I drove here to get the Hukilau burger (as seen on "Man v. Food"). While I thought the teriyaki beef elevated the burger to something more than just pedestrian quality, the rest of the burger really did not impress me. As a bit of a disclaimer, I grew up in Hawaii and have eaten tons of teriyaki beef, so for me, this burger may not have the appeal that it would have to someone who's never had it. I also would have preferred the egg over-easy, as opposed to fried. There's nothing like a runny yolk adding a bit of "sauce" to a burger. I will give Hukilau Cafe one thing: this place may be a little bit off the main road, but tourists and locals still fill the place up.

"Is your Dad an astronaut?..........because someone took the stars from the sky and put them in your eyes" "I hope you know CPR, because you take my breath away" "If you stood in front of a mirror and held up 11 roses, you would see 12 of the most beautiful things in the world" I would have to say that each of these ridiculously cheesy pick up lines can be used to describe how I feel about the Hukilau burger. Great men have started wars for less. A burger so good it makes you wanna slap yo momma and send her to a retirement home in Iraq........well, perhaps that's just how I feel about it. Good food is worth travelling for..........My girlfriend and I drive from the heart of Waikiki to chow down on this delectable gift from the gods. It's probably a good thing we don't live closer. I can just imagine getting a paper cut and bleeding out egg yoke or brown loco moco gravy.........which, by the way, is also the best I've had on the island. From it's unassuming neighborhood location, to it's friendly wait staff which always greets us with a smile and warm welcome.......the north shores Hukilau Cafe will certainly remain a favorite of ours for years to come.

The Hukilau Cafe is a tiny little place tucked off of the main road around the Island. They serve good ol' home cooked breakfast foods and some other favorites. The pancakes are stellar, try them. A great place to stop and fill up on a good meal before heading to the beach for the day.

What Gale said. I LOVE the Hukilau Cafe. I'm a former Hawaii native who just recently visited the Hukilau Cafe on a vacation home. Man, this place was a little hard to find. Drove past it after driving for a few miles beyond the Polynesian Cultural Center. It's in a quaint little location that is easy to miss. We walked into the restaurant and were immediately seated. After a few pleasantries, we ordered the Hukilau Burger and the Loco Moco. Man, I've had a few Loco Mocos in my day, and this was one of the better ones. Just enough gravy, not too salty, and the egg was just the right bit of runny to mix into the rice. I could not stop eating the Loco Moco. As for the Hukilau burger... I have never, EVER seen egg AND a piece of sliced teriyaki beef on a burger. It was a flavor-filled bonanza. After the meal was done I could hardly move. Thank you, Hukilau Cafe. You must go here if you visit the North Shore on the island of Oahu.

I went to this place hoping that it would look something like the Hukilau Cafe does in the movie 50 First Dates - instead it looked like a run down old diner - complete with flies buzzing around and no air conditioning. My first impression was not to impressing. A server behind the counter asked me and my Mom if we wanted an order to go or if we wanted to sit down. We said sit down and were given menus and told to sit anyplace and someone would come to take our order. We looked thru the menu decided what we wanted - and then had to wait and wait for someone to take our order - My Mom grew impatient and wanted me to go up to the counter - I assured her that someone would be with us soon - I said "there probably just on Hawaiian time" - shortly after our orders were taken. My Mom ordered a plate and a soft drink - and I ordered a plate (teri beef, fried mahi, fried shrimp, rice and mac) and tap water. I was told that I can go get my own water from a jug over in the corner. A little while later our food was brought out on Styrofoam plates with plastic utensils - my Mom got her drink in a paper cup. The food was heavy, rich and fattening - sure it tasted good - but it seemed so unhealthy. Everything on the menu seemed unhealthy. While we were eating our server never stopped by to see how our food was. After we finished eating our server never brought the check - again my Mom grew impatient and had me go up to the counter to pay. When I paid the bill I did give the server a tip - even though it seemed as if all she did was take our order and drop the food off at the table (fast food restaurants offer that much service). After I finished eating a had a sick sort of feeling - the food was just too greasy and heavy for me. I may come back one more time to try the famous Hukilau Burger - but I don't know about that.

Cash only - something to keep in mind - but a great value. I had the terriyaki beef plate lunch and my husband had the combo platter that included beef, fish and shrimp. We both liked our meals. I wouldn't make a special trip just to eat here, but if you're in the area, it's worth a stop.

Hukilau probably has one of the friendliest staff I've ever encountered. Parking can get pretty tight and I and imagine a line out the door since the Hukilau doesn't sit much, so get there early. I ordered the Hungry Hawaiian which same with 2 eggs cooked to order, Portuguese sausage, bacon, country potatoes, and 2 mini pancakes for under $8. This was definitely a "best bang for your buck" type of meal, and I felt full without putting a dent in my pocket. Breakfast spots on the north shore are pretty scarce, so head over to the Hukilau Cafe for all your breakfast needs. Additional info: They care closed on Sundays, learned that the hard way (thanks Mr. & Mrs. Bamba).

Do I remember this place? Unlike Drew Barrymore, yes I do. This place is located in the middle of a neighborhood so it is kind of difficult to locate but once you see the sign, it's on. First and foremost this is a real cozy place meaning that this is a rather small cafe. Probably like around 12 tables at most. But whoa that's where the small category stops in this cafe. We ordered the shrimp burger and the loco moco. The shrimp burger was really good as it didn't have a cheap taste to it and it was a BIG burger that fills you right up! It has the clean shrimp taste which doesn't taste fishy. The loco moco (I think that's the right name) is just a behemoth of a plate. It includes steak, eggs, rice topped with a mouth watering mushroom sauce! Eating it was like eating a NFL lineman's meal. You just feel like you can run around the whole island of Oahu with that kind of meal! Thinking back of the food is probably why Drew had short term memory because she just tasted some mind numbingly good food! But do yourself a favor and come with a empty stomach to confront the loco moco if that is your choice of food, you can thank me later.

My husband and I went here due to the name of the cafe from 50 1st date. This cafe is not from the movie but the is not the point. the point of this review is that the food was ono. we order the fried rice with egg and Portuguese sausage and it was devine. the portion is pretty hefty for the price you pay. My husband i split the breakfast and we were full afterward. the waitress was extremely nice. we saw a lot of local and tourist at this cafe. Just remember they only take cash and it is street parking. In addition, there business hours are limited.

We spent a week on the North shore, and this place kept popping up in searches. So we went and had a late breakfast one morning before we left. The food was good and plenty. I had corned beef hash and eggs and loved it, but next time I'd choose the rice over potatoes. Lot's of locals, but us tourists were treated well also. I love local anywhere and this place is no exception, if I find myself in Laie again, I'll swing by the Hukilau.

breakfast please!!! at the huki huki huki huki hukiiiii-lau...cafe that is. i don't know why disney's tiki room song comes to mind when thinking of the hukilau cafe, but none the less..i'm all smiles when thinking about my meal here. came for breakfast around 930 and waited about 10-15 minutes for our group of 7. not too bad of a wait considering there was another group of 7 ahead of us, and only about 10 tables in the little mom & pop restaurant. normally you're supposed to walk in and sign the wait list for a table up by the counter, but since there was no list we were told to just wait outside and they'd call us in. ***NOTE: there is a sign on the door that states CASH ONLY or TRAVELERS CHECK as forms of payment. so hit up the atm's before coming to hukilau! we were warmly greeted by our waitress and instantly felt at home & comfortable talking with her. though this place seems to be full of many locals (our waitress was greeting them all by first names), many tourists seem to frequent this joint as well - be it from the publicity from man vs. food, 50 first dates, etc...no matter though, our waitress still made us feel welcome=) a girl friend and i shared 2 plates: the loco moco breakfast & the 2 eggs over fried rice w/ portuguese sausage. DUDE..the portions are huuuuuuuge! we split our meals to try both dishes and neither of us could finish our portions. another of our friends ordered just a side of the fried rice and a side of the portuguese sausage. haha her sides looked like full portions to us! hukilau knows how to feed you and keep you satisfied!!! the hubby had the hungry hawaiian (3 eggs, bacon, rice, portuguese sausage, & pancakes) and he grubbed on that dish. all our guy friends gobbled up their breakfast meals and were still able to split the hukilau burger amongst themselves - just to try the famous burger. which they said was really good too! oh yeah, for those wanting the best of both worlds - try coming around the same time we showed up (930ish). that way you can order breakfast and you'll be there when they start changing up the menu for lunch. so...you can order both breakfast AND lunch if that's your fancy.=P meal came out to about $9/person, not too bad considering the huge food portions. was the food that great? i loved the portuguese sausage and my eggs cooked over medium. yes, over medium! but i felt the loco moco was just a slab of ground beef lacking flavor. i really needed a lot of gravy to mask the dull flavor. hukilau is pretty much a home cooked meal w/ really friendly service. food was good but it's the service that put this place over the top for me. so for some good grub while on the north shore..head out to the..sing it with me now: huki huki huki huki hukiiiiii lau!

If you're visiting Hawaii you need to make time to experience the Hukilau Cafe. This is the place featured on Man vs. Food. Local food and it's in my opinion the best Loco Moco on the island. Make sure to bring cash and realize they don't have parking lot. (Street ony). They're open for breakfast and lunch and close around 2 p.m.

After hearing about Hukilau for years, I finally made the trip from Honolulu to have lunch. The staff is fantastic. It would be impossible for them to be any friendlier. Even though I was by myself they sat me at the last table that seated 4. I had the Hukilau mixed plate lunch for $7.95 and as usual I couldn't finish my 2nd scoop rice. Thinly sliced beef cooked well done, but still had some tenderness, breaded and fried 2 piece mahimahi perfectly done, 3 breaded and fried shrimp perfectly done, lying on a bed of cabbage chiffonade. A side of apple cider tasting BBQ sauce and tartar sauce. It was the lunch rush and the place was hopping. After I finished my lunch, I went about the dining room to take a few pictures, since I'd driven 40 miles to get there. After a few snaps, a local fellow came up to me and told me that if he was in any of the photos, that I had to pay him! This guy tried to shake me down in the Hukilau Café during the lunch rush! I told him he wasn't, because I wasn't gonna be cornered by this guy. He or his wife was not the focus of my photos, but he's probably in one anyway, like I care. I did not expect to go to La'ie for lunch and be accosted like I was a Tijuana tourist.

Had to come here during my and my bf's vacation to Hawaii after watching Man v Food. Took us nearly an hour to get here from Waikiki, and it was hard to find, but MAN was it worth it. Bf ordered the Hukilau burger, since this is the ONLY place in the world (=]) to get it. I got the mini roasted pork since the server said it was extremely popular. Loved the small diner feel in this place. Really chill, relaxed environment with really laid-back and sweet workers (who won't let you sit down if a table isn't cleaned!) Really hot inside, but it was bearable. My boyfriend foodgasm'd many times over his Hukilau Burger. I think that meant he loved it. A lot :). My roasted pork was SO most and delicious, and PERFECT with the gravy and rice. The accompanying macaroni salad was delicious also! Their soda fountain machine was out of order, but I won't deduct any stars for that since they made our eating experience awesome. The hour drive was more than worth it. Wish I could do it again, but sadly I am back in Cali. *Sigh*

My wife and I were there just last week and we wish we could have stayed longer. We rented a house there within walking distance to the Hukilau Cafe and ate there for breakfast at least 3 times and had lunch there twice. The French Toast was incredible!!!!! and the Hukilau Burger is everything that Adam Richman of Man V. Food said it was... Incredible!!! Anytime I return to Hawaii, I will make it a point to return to our favorite place on the Island!!!

Wow. This place was disgusting in so many ways. I'd like to start off by saying that I'm from Seattle, so I don't desire the kind of food Hawaiians tend to enjoy. (Though I did love Helena's Hawaiian food, that was amazing.) That being said, I think that my opinion on this will be good for people like me from the West Coast of the mainland. The service was probably the worst I've ever had. We were half an hour or so late for breakfast, so I asked if we could have some if we paid extra. The server gave me a look that could kill and said no. From that point on, she gave us dirty looks, replied with sharp answers like, "that it." (not a question, but a statement) and would rush off before we could answer. Even the other server who seemed to be asked to take the original girl's place was in a huff and annoyed. The food was made to induce strokes, which, I'm assuming is pretty much the basis for Hawaiian food: heavy, processed and enriched. So disgusting. The "raspberry tea" was the most artificial flavor one could find made from some sort of powder mix with a ton of sweetener. - oh my god was it sweet. Gross. Everything was disposable. The paper it was served on, the plastic forks, the wax paper cup, etc. And, just in case you don't know, Hawaii is broke and they're spending around 6.7 billion dollars per year on shipping their waste to landfills on the mainland. Seriously, they need to work on reducing their waste. I didn't mind the fact that all the windows were open, and that it was quite warm. It's Hawaii, and at least they're not using extra energy to have an AC in such a mild climate. End of the line: if you value your money, health and the environment, do not support this place.

4.5 stars for being the inspiration for 50 first dates. It's not the actual restaurant used, but they modeled it after it. When you walk in, there are posters and memorabilia signed by Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore. Very cool touch to it... I heard the loco moco was the thing to get, but I was drawn to the hukilau burger. Burger, teri beef, egg, lettuce, tomato & cheese on a bun. If that isn't getting you excited, you better check your pulse. It was one of the better burgers I've had. Fries...not so much. They were cold and not very flavorful. This place closes at 2 PM and isn't open on Monday. It's tucked away between the Polynesian Cultural Center and Giovanni's in a neighborhood, but it was busy. What a nice find in a pretty desolate area.

Since we were trying to hit all the "World Famous" restaurants in Honolulu, my brother suggested that we go to Hukilau burger. Known for their Hukilau burger and for being the restaurant that that one restaurant in 50 first dates is named after! Everyone was super nice (well..everyone in hawaii is super nice!). Water is self serve and the food came out fast! My brother ordered the Hukilau burger which he swore on his life, was the best burger he's ever had. As simple as it was....a bun, a patty, an egg and veggies, he just couldn't stop raving about how good it was .. he thinks it was the teriyaki sauce! Dad got the shrimp burger .. it's exactly how it sounds ahha a burger with fried shrimp in it.. which leads me to talk about the fried shrimp! It was crispy, flavorful and had a delicious dipping sauce. My brother got some sort of combination plate that came with short ribs (not too thick, they were perfect!) shrimp, rice and macaroni salad. My sister in law and I got the loco moco! Although i've been to hawaii before, I never got to try the loco moco. When we first arrived in Hawaii, I tried the Loco Moco burger at some other restaurant but it was OK. I got the mini Loco Moco which consists of rice, a burger patty and an egg cooked to your liking..all smothered in gravy!!!!!!! So simple...yet so GOOODDD!

So I'm randomly driving by and I get hungry. Lo and behold I find Hukilau Cafe and hey, I just gotta stop because it's "local flavor". The place looks pretty chill and the folks are def local or probably it's more like I'm a New Yorker and the outsider. Place is clean and gets a very nice breeze via cross ventilation but is that really important for a local joint? Nah but it's a nice plus. I ordered the steak sandwich and I want to say it was amazing but it was just okay. Def just their version of the Philly cheese steak. The steak is good and could be better. The bread was a little too tough for my taste. I think this place has potential and it was prob my inept choice of food that's the downer. Would I come back? Yes because the place is pretty chill, but it'll have to wait until I'm back in this corner of the world.

If your a tourist and want to try the moco loco but aren't sure if your gonna like it, I suggest you get the moco loco bowl. It's a much smaller version. This place could use an a/c but eventually you get use to it. Good customer service.

I was so excited to go to Hawaii this summer and even more to check out the Hukilau Cafe when I heard about it. I went for breakfast and I had the fried rice with spam and an over easy egg on top. :) it was delicious. 1. it's three things I always eat 2. what better place to have it and Hawaiian style :) Everyone is super friendly in Hawai'i and this place wreaked of it. It felt so homey and welcoming. I was very comfortable there and I really enjoyed how I was treated. Wonderful experience, and I'm planning my trip back to Hawai'i already.

My foodie friends talk about this place, so I was excited to eat here. My partner and I saved it for the last restaurant during our staycation. When we arrived, there was a huge group of uniformed (Hawaii Nature Conservancy?) young people out front. Undeterred, we walked in and were told--rather snippily--we had to sign in. When I signed in, I noticed that the name right before us said, "15"! This place is small, so the waitress was understandably stressed and trying to create several tables of 5. She created two such tables. Meanwhile, a table for 2 sat idly in the back. She was not making it a third table of 5, but she never offered the table to us. It was also very hot in there, so we decided to wait outside. While we were waiting, we watched more uniformed people drive up. Now, people who had arrived after us were going to be seated before us. I went back in to scratch my name off the list because SOMETIMES when you do that, the restaurant staff can suddenly seat you. Instead, the waitress seemed relieved. I love food; I love good food; however, I also love good service. This place struck out on the latter. I'm not sure if it's worth going back to see if my foodie friends are right.

Sometimes their hours of operation make it difficult to eat there, but when you manage to get there while they're open it's well worth it. There may be a wait, but the staff does a great job of shifting people around so everyone can sit down as quickly as possible and still be comfy. I'm not a huge fan of breakfast food, but Hukilau has a pretty decent selection so it's easy to find something that anyone can be happy with. The service here is really great and they make sure everyone is well cared for. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area and they happen to be open for business.

Stayed over at Turtle Bay in the middle of the week and have been dying to try this place since forever. Went first thing in the morning and the place was not too crowded. Ordered the Loco Moco bowl and went out to take some pics and next thing you know Aunty brings my food out to me. Awesome and nice flavor. Most def a place to go when near Laie. Was actually thinking about buying a place in the area just to be closer. Winnah Winnah.

This place is just OK. Not the best local food, cramped eating space. It's worth driving to Papole's in Hauula for better local food.

When you enter Hukilau Cafe, it doesn't feel like you're on Oahu anymore. It's got such a homey, small town feel about it, you can't help but feel like you were instantly transported to a little hole-in-the-wall on one of the neighbor islands. I instantly felt comfortable walking into this place, like I'd been here a dozen times before. And that feeling carries over to the awesome service. The woman who helped us was warm and easy going, the type of person who will casually put her hand on your shoulder while taking your order, who knows most of the people who walk in and out by name, who will ask the neighborhood teens who come in why they're not in school, and take a few moments to shoot the breeze with you (all of which I witnessed while I was there). We went for breakfast, and their food was delicious and simple, no-nonsense fair. I ordered the buttermilk pancakes (nice balance of fluffy and dense), with a side of spam and eggs (sunny side up, cooked perfectly). Wife ordered their corned beef hash and eggs. Both of us walked out of there with very happy tummies. I definitely want to go back to check out other items on their menu, especially their Hukilau Burger, which is right up my alley. Be warned: there's minimal parking available. Street parking only, and since they're in the middle of a residential neighborhood, there's not much to speak of. If you arrive during a busy period, you may need to circle around for a bit or park down the street. In short, good food, friendly service, comfortable atmosphere, all winning components. I just couldn't get over how homey this place felt, and if I lived any closer to Laie, I'd surely be a regular there, hitting them up for breakfast before work. Oh, and just to address the "50 First Dates" connection: this Hukilau Cafe is far cooler than the movie version. -r-

Okay I was totally excited about going here, and made a special trip from Kaneohe to see what all the fuss was about. We drove the 20+ miles from K-town, despite gas being $4.50 a gallon because of my fellow yelper reviews. I even made sure to go to the beach beforehand to work up a good appetite, thinking about how wonderful the place was going to be. Man what a let down. I mean, it could have been better seeing it was on the food network and all, and the place was littered with plenty of locals and even tourists - no doubt to experience the hooplah that surrounds this place. My dad had the loco moco with onions and mushrooms, which was pretty good, but needed salt bad! I guess it was better to have to add salt than have too much. I had the hukilau burger and fries. I was expecting a Bohemiath of a Burger, but was oddly let down. The patty was small, and a bit dry. Yes I am being picky because when I order a burger I want the grease to run down my arms as I am devouring every last bite. Also the fries were salt-less, and they had hunts ketchup. I know this sounds snobby, but I like my heinz damnit. Pros: - Staff was extremely nice, even when I overheard a tourist asking what "katsu" was (it made me smile). - Envioronment was fun, and very local. - It was cheap, two of us ate, and drank large sodas for $18. Cons: - Burger patty was small. - Everything needed salt. - It was hotter than haties in that place (not sure how the woman in jeans and kahuku red raider sweatshirt was not dying of a stroke).

This is home of the legendary Hukilau Burger, as seen on Man vs Food. I used to say that if a cardiac arrest had a taste its the Jack in the Box's Chili Ultimate Cheeseburger (believe me thats a good thing, because only healthy food taste like crap) well that burger is long gone, with no sight of Jack bringing it back. Have no fear my half starved fat friend, Hukilau Cafe is just a stones throw away, and this burger is worth the drive. The price is more than reasonable for the amount of food you get. For those of you not familiar with this burger, allow me to detail.... Its a 1/4lb ground beef patty sitting under a 1/4lb of teri beef, under a fried egg, with melted cheese over that, under a tomato and lettuce, with your choice of mayo on the bun (if your a fat bastard like me, then mayo is a definite YES) my only tip is bring handy wipes, because its gonna get messy and paper napkins just dont get that greasy burger smell off your fat fingers as well as handy wipes and a bottle of purell will

Visited from Fresno California and even though we weren't locals we were treated like family! Hukilau burger was a blast to eat. We enjoyed this cafe and hospitality that we received!

If you are in the North Shore you have to check this place out. The food was outstanding! My girlfriend and I ordered the Loco Moco and the fried chicken! Both were amazing! The fried chicken was so crispy and moist and the gravy on the loco moco was so flavorful! Each came with mac salad which was really good too. We had some horrible mac salad on the island, so this was a treat. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars is because I was wanting to try both breakfast and lunch. I looked online and it said that breakfast ended at 11am. We got there at 10:45am, hoping to still get breakfast, and they wouldn't serve it to us. I was super bummed because I heard good things about their breakfast. I would definitely come back here again if I visit Oahu again and make sure I wake up a little earlier next time :)

Breakfast was a 5-star . . . the Hungry Hawaiian ($9) was big enough for two and the pancakes were delicious, along with eggs, sausage and potatoes. Yum. However the lunch was about a 2-star . . . cheeseburger was just edible and the stew had a lot of fat in it. I'd certainly go again for breakfast!

Delicious and super affordable. We ordered the french toast, egg sandwich, loco moco, and mac salad and all were delicious. If you're a Man vs Food lover, you should definitely take a drive out to the North Shore and visit this ma n pop joint.

I stand by my original review. Yup, still "so damn good, makes you want to smack yo' mama" good! The Man ordered the Hungry Hawaiian and loved it. I ordered the special w/ vienna sausage. Dee-smack yo' mama-licious. And now they have this drink, Laie Point Otai, that is sooooooo good. They give you a free sample and, like crack, they know you'll be back. You give them $4 and end up w/ a this super gulp size of Otai. And you will suck it down as if they gave you a small sample size. Serious. THAT good.

If you're in the area, this is a nice restaurant to drop by. Yes, the staff here are awesome. And yes, the food is good for the price. Before I go on, please note that it's cash or travelers check only. Onto the review... To be totally honest, I felt a little irritated with the tourists who couldn't read the waitlist instructions on the message board and the ex-locals who felt entitled to cutting in front of others; I guess you can't win. Just note that you should write your name down on the clipboard instead of blocking the tiny doorway or seating yourself. I had the fried shrimp burger, which was around $4, and it was a very tasty burger! The shrimp were huge, and the batter was great (not too oily or thick). I didn't feel like having their burgers or loco moco, and I don't regret getting the shrimp burger at all! James F. had the Hukilau Burger (hamburger patty, fried onion, teriyaki beef, and egg), and he said it was interesting. I had a bite and that was enough for me. I preferred the fried shrimp burger. He also ordered the beef stew, steer clear of this one. It wasn't anything special, and it wasn't very good. (Apologies to Hukilau if you're reading this, nothing personal). The thing that makes this place special is the friendliness of the staff. I appreciate their love for their cafe, and one of the servers has one of the best laughs I have ever heard. It's definitely not a Julia Roberts laugh, but it sure has the same wholeheartedness. Special laughs count in my reviews, don't judge me.

I love this little hole in the wall place. The portions, price and taste is just over the top. I had the Kalbi Ribs, and my friend had the Loco Moco. AWESOME

The name of this cafe/ restaurant may sound familiar if you're a fan of the movie 50 First Dates with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. Unfortunately, it's only the name that is the same from the movie. The actual movie borrowed the name and built the movie Hakilau Cafe down the street on the water side. Anyway, we stayed up the road from this cafe, and were so excited to try it - particularly for the Loco Moco. The Loco Moco is definitely not for the faint of hearts, I almost had a blocked artery watching my husband attempt the 2 scoops of rice, 2 patties, 2 sunny side up eggs, with brown gravy all over it. It's definitely greasy and gross; but, it's one of things that you have to try. And what can you expect from a place that serves Vienna Sausages (the whole can) - yes, it actually says "the whole can" on the menu. Overall, the people that work there are very nice and friendly. The food price is reasonable, and portions are huge.

It's cheap for the north shore. Overcooked burgers. Bland loco moco. Frozen fries. Nothing special except for unique dishes. Nice staff.

Hukilau, I love you. Everything we ordered was great. The people were super friendly. I only wish that we had more time on our vacation to eat more of your food. Three meals in one week just wasn't enough for me. My favorite was the roast pork. Delicious! Coconut pancakes. . . SOOOOO yummy! No trip to the North Shore should be complete with a visit to Hukilau. I wish I could move to Laia and work for Hukilau.

This place is just the kind of establishment I'd like to eat at all the time, if they had more veggie/seafood options. It's local, comfy, and extremely inviting. Service was awesome and made us feel right at home. They were able to accommodate our giant party of 20 (thanks Tai T. for taking us here!) without a hitch despite space limitations. The food was down home (if home were paradise) comfort food. Loco moco looked delicious, I mean, hamburger patty over rice smothered in gravy, what's not to like?! The roast pork, I was told, was tender and super juicy, while the burgers were very flavorful. I had the fried shrimp with a scoop of rice and mac salad, but it was just aiite. Definitely get their more popular dishes. Also, bring cash!

Great Comfort food. After a hot day of doing not much at all this was great. You'll feel like a fatty eating here though, but it's totally worth it. Like most places in Hawaii, it's as casual as you can be.

Thanks Man v. Food! This delightful "dive" on the north shore is the perfect antidote to the crowds of Honolulu. The Hukilau buyer is worth the effort to find this place (as is the Moco Loco). Others have described these treats better than I can so if your int he north shore area, stop by.

  • Patricia M.

The food was average.....but the prices are perfectly cheap so it's worth giving it a try. I had the mac. nut pancakes. They were very fluffy and big and oh so filling! My husband had the moco loco which he's had at several other restaurants and the Hukilau's was adequate but nothing to special. We both at for under $15.....so you can't beat the price!

  • Gabriel M.

We came here for the hukilau burger, apparently a local favorite and one of the meals featured by Adam on man vs food. I have to admit, the burger was amazing. It's hard to imagine teriyaki beef, a great cheese burger, and a fried egg as a great combination but trust me, it is. It works so well on so many levels. This would make great college fair and deserves to sit next to the best chow in Austin.

My wife & I just ate there today and it was great! We arrived around 12:30 and while the place is small, it didn't fill up till after we got there. I had the Hukilau Burger, and yes, the burger is spiced ground beef, not plain. I wasn't sure about the egg, as I'm not a big egg fan, but the way it was all cooked, it was unique and quite tasty. Deb had a fish sandwich and said it was very good. We like our hot food served hot and ours stayed hot to the last bite, even the fries. The two ladies serving everyone were very friendly and helpful, and both said "Thanks" from behind the counter as we were leaving. Yes, you do have to get your own water and they serve in plastic baskets lined w/ paper and provide plastic utensils. Hey, this is a true small town island eatery. If you want fancy, stay in Honolulu. Yes, it's on the north shore so takes a while to get there. Do what we did, make a day of it (yes, we did stop several other places on the way home). The total bill for both of us was $20, including tip. Yes, we'll go back and take friends with us.

This was one of my most anticipated meals in Oahu. Watching the Man v. Food episode with Adam grubbing on the Loco Moco and Hukilau Burger, made me want to stop by here. Came here with a group of friends and surprisingly waiting time for 7 was about 15 minutes. Upon entering the cafe, we were greeted by a friendly waitress who made us all feel at home. We came around brunch time so we could handle both Breakfast and Lunch at the same time. My order was the Loco Moco with a side of Portuguese Sausage. This feast alone was perfect, but we had to order the Hukilau Burger where a group of 4 split on this order. My Loco Moco with over easy eggs and Portuguese hit the spot and I was so full from this meal, that I wasn't hungry until later in the evening. At the Hukilau Cafe you'll get good prices, hearty meals, and friendly service.. you can't go wrong here! Mahalo!

Went to the Hukilau Cafe on our last full day on Oahu and very sad that we did not find it sooner. I ordered something safe, the chicken Katsu and it was pretty good. It came in two sizes, mini and regular and I'm glad I got the mini. Pretty decent serving with sticky rice and macaroni salad side. Service was efficient and very friendly. Next time we are here, I want to try their breakfasts. Note that they are cash only, with street parking and very little places to sit. Time your visits accordingly to avoid long lines!

  • Al S.

CASH ONLY! Best damn burger in Oahu, hands down. There are several decent burger spots, but they use frozen patties (you can tell when they're perfectly round and never anything but well done). This place is the real deal. The Hukilau burger is such an amazing combination of flavors, and the price is ridiculous for what you get. All the way around, amazing. Worth the hour drive.

I only ever ate there once and tried one thing: The Hukilau Burger. Yes, indeed, the five star rating goes solely to this monster of a burger. Now, I would call myself a burger person. I don't settle for a Big Mac. A Whopper, however nostalgic, is not really that good in the end. Apparently, a beef burger is not enough for me, because I seem to need all the fixings, in addition to savory teri beef AND a friggin fried egg! And when this huge burger was brought to my table and looked me in the eye, almost laughing in my hungry face, I knew I had met my match. In the end, I ate the whole damn thing. 'Nuff said. Try it out!

delicious food! easily the best food we had the entire trip!!! it's been almost 6 months and I'm still dreaming about that burger!!! the hukilau burger is on my list of the best things I've ever eaten..when you bite into it and the yolk of that fried egg breaks and goes running down your hands..you might cry from happiness.

bring your eating cloths! Always good food and lots of it! the place to go for breakfast when your home after a time away from the islands. totally casual, i always encourage people to try it out when they are on the windward/north shore side. fried rice w/egg breakfast plate, and french toast plate.

yelp 365 challenge #18/365 perhaps it was the hype that ruined it for me... i ordered, of course, the hukilau burger and a loco moco... hukilau burger was ok. as you already know it had a fried egg in it... never had that before...(sarcasm) the loco moco was ok. good portion size... i'm into perfect portion bites... and they gave just enough rice, egg, burger, and gravy :) that made me smile... therefore the three stars... but it wasn't the most amazing loco moco i have ever had... it was just kinda like everywhere else... service... perhaps they were all grumpy that day :( i will however try and come back to try their breakfast... not ready to write this place off yet... it seems that i must be missing something..??

Went here to get some breakfast/brunch with my wife before getting to the Polynesian Cultural Center. Upon walking in, you instantly get greeted with a big dose of the aloha spirit. The waiting staff is very high energy and super friendly. I had ordered the Hukilau Burger and my wife got the kaluah(sp?) pork. First off with the burger. How can you beat a burger with a freaking fried egg on it? YOU CAN'T! Oh, it was so good. And unlike many other large burgers, I didn't feel my arteries clogging as I ate it (but I'm sure it was) and all was good. The pork my wife got was equally delicious, however it is a much heavier plate then my burger. It was also a dish that I was eyeballing pretty much from walking in as well. The pork was robust with flavor, tender, juicy and topped off with a great gravy. I think I may need to stop by here again before I leave back for the mainland. So, with the local spirit, this place has the ono grinds.

When you get to the hukilau cafe you really know what to expect there's island music playing always plenty of people. Not the biggest place but they make up for it with some of the best burgers on the island. When you come here you have to get the hukilau burger. The sweet teraiky beef with the sauteed onions make flavor explosion in your mouth then you taste the fried egg and all seems right with the world. I would recommend this cafe to anyone that like food. Not to mention the price is amazing. This place is all around perfect.

Heard about this place on Men vs. Food on the Travel Chanel. My hubby and I just went back for a cousin's wedding, so we just had to try them out. OH MAN!!! The Hukilau Burger and Loco Moco are to die for!!!

  • Michael R.

Wow! I can't believe I ate the whole thing. The Loco Moco was incredible- huge as well. My wife had the Hukilau Special burger. This was a winner! A big beef patty, teri beef, over easy egg, lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo on what tasted like a sweetbread roll. So messy and delicious. The staff were nice and helpful. Aloha all da way! Other diners enjoyed Hawaiian plates, chicken and many other local kine favorites. Do not miss this little gem off the beaten track but so close to Kam Highway on Wahinepe'e st. So Ono!

The Hukilau burger was amazing (thanks Man vs. Food). Their banana pancakes, blueberry pancakes, and passion orange juice are delicious. The only negative was the side of macaroni salad was a bit heavy on they mayonnaise for our tastes.

Hukilau buger how I love thee!!!!!! Jesus christ who knew a burger could taste so good that i would want it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I also tried the kalua pork with this kinda sticky rice that was very good. The loco moco was good also but you have to get the hukilau burger. Its a must order when coming here. The lady was so nice and welcoming also which is always a bonus

Bomb breakfast. Great pancakes and French toast. Moco Loco is too big to finish and was awesome. The breakfast sandwiches are terrific too. This place can do no wrong. The service was really friendly and made us feel at home. Saw the place on Man vs. Food.. Hukilau lived up to the hype.

We got the loco moco and teriyaki beef. Both were good. We got both with eggs over easy and rice!! Nothing special..would go back again if it was on the way to north shore. No parking so you will have to park on street. Cash only.

Came here after seeing Man vs Food. Freakin awesome! I had the Loco Moco and Wifey had the Hukilau Burger. Both were delicious but the Burger was beyond amazing.. Well worth the hour drive from waikiki. Besides, the views along the way are breath taking. The only down fall to this place was that its hot as heck in there. But it's not unbearable.

Words cannot properly convey how amazing the Hukilau Cafe is. I first saw this place on Man V Food and immediately decided I would eat here if/when I returned to Oahu. Luckily, my fiance (now my wife) wanted to get married on the island. I was on my way! It is a small diner that looks to service mainly locals, as the locale is off the main road of Kamehameha Hwy. We came here for breakfast and we ordered Coconut pancakes and The Hungry Hawaiian with Portuguese Sausage and Spam. The food here is amazing. Everything was delicious and the tastes are extremely unique. In fact, it was so delicious, we decided to come back the next day with a couple from our wedding guests for lunch. This time we came for lunch. We decided to have a sort of pot luck. We shared a Loco Moco, a Roast Pork, a Hukilau Burger, and a Hawaiian steak sandwich. Again, everything blew us away. The burger was so juicy and flavorful while the pork was extremely tender with that great gravy all over it. The loco moco was what surprised us the most. We figured there would not be much to just hamburger patties over rice with gravy and a fried egg. How wrong we were! Simply delectable! The way the flavors meld in your mouth is out of this world. We added on onions and mushrooms and they added even more to the taste. Lastly, the hostess explained that the Hawaiian Steak Sandwich is basically a Philly cheese steak that's made in Hawaii. Heh. Either way, another dish that really hit the spot. Now you would think this would be the end. However, we loved the food so much, we decided to bring THE ENTIRE WEDDING PARTY of 20 people here for taste. To review, I came here 3 days out of our 7 day wedding vacation. I can guarantee you it would've been more had they not been closed on Sun and Mon. They even invited us out for drinks a bar/grill at the resort we were staying at. Unfortunately, we had to finish taking our wedding photos and were unable to meet them. Once again, Highly recommend this place for both the friendly, warm atmosphere and the amazing food! Yummmmmmmmmmmmm.

We had the Hungry Hawaiian which consisted of 3 eggs, home fries, two sides of meat (we chose the bacon and the portugese sausage) and two small pancakes. It was just okay. The potatoes were slightly undercooked and luke warm. The pancakes were actually the best part. We should have ordered a regular order of them because they were fluffy and delicious. We also had the Hukilau Burger which I though lived up to the hype. It was tasty, the ingredients fresh and the teriyaki beef added just the right extra to make it something special but points off for using a slice of that processed cheese you pull out of cellophane.

Came here for the Hukilau burger as seen on Man vs. Food.. but they don't start serving lunch until 11 and it was only 9am.. Soo.. had the LocoMoco breakfast instead.. Over easy eggs on top of beef/hamburger and rice, topped with gravy.. AMAZING!! Yum yum yum! And the service was great also! :)

Service was great... food was fantastic... prices were very reasonable! The loco moco is the real deal. Makes my mouth water just thinking about them. It's a huuuge plate. I stuffed myself til I could hardly move, and still had enough left over for my in-between-breakfast-and-lunch meal. =) The mac nut pancakes were awesome too.
