Awww shucks, your overpriced California purse got dirty on the floor! My heart goes out to you, how on earth did you survive that indignity. I love it when the Cali Spoiled-ocracy experiences the real local culture and undergoes such mental trauma. Chuckle. Obasan, we love Teshima Restaurant. We of the real local Hawaii. Tourists, stick to Waikoloa beach resort, where your tender sensibilities will be gently handled and you will be properly sequestered from the real Hawaii. Oh, and more of your money will be lifted from your wallets, with proper Aloha.

It's a nice local place with very simplistic items on the menu. Everything tasted pretty good. The service was nice, but the timeliness of our food left a lot to be desired. I'm not sure if they forgot part of our order or what happened, but there was probably around 30-45 minutes in between when the food started first arriving and when the last item my noodle bowl showed up. I know they were fairly busy that day, but the wait seemed unreasonable. Luckily we were in a large group of 9, so I was able to munch on everyone else's food before my order finally came. Overall it was a decent place.

Out of all of the places we ate on Kona side, this was my favorite! I had the sashimi tray. It was all pieces of tuna (I thought it would be an assortment) but it was very delicious and came with several side plates including miso and rice. They serve traditional Japanese food here and this is a family owned and operated place. The grand-daughter of the founder waited on us. The service was good, the place is not pretentious, the decor is dated, but the food was on point and a good value. The day we went the place was packed but we still got good service.

This restaurant was a favorite for my grandma and grandpa, it was a special night if we went to Teshima's for lunch or dinner the food was always great!!! Memories of a local japanese restaurant for me as I now I live in Southern California but when I return to Kona I always stop by for a meal it brings back my childhood memories:)

looking for good traditional Japanese style food on the big island... Visit this place evertime im on the island. The outstanding dishes... Fresh Fish... it better be always eat the $15 sashimi as just a appetizer The New York m RARE with teri sauce on the side is better than sukiyaki style THE TEMPURA IS TO DIE FOR... MATSUHISA IN BEVERLY HILLS ( JUST ATE THERE 5 DAYS AGO) COULD TAKE A LESSON. YES SAUCE IS ON THE SWEET SIDE BUT THAT IS THE WAY I LIKE IT... Nabeyaki udon needs some work tasteless sauce... the dashi needs work... Miso shiru alittle on the too lite side not enough miso taste. But Overall a visit worthy place... igotta return for morning island food... If I could get by Matsuyamas food mart first

Decent Japanese food in a casual but dated setting. The tempura was good as was all the other food I tried. Service was fast and friendly. I would probably give Teshima an extra star if the setting were nicer.

By just typing or mentioning the name of "teshima" already make me drooling. I love this one.. why ??? The Service. They greet you with a high respect manner. They are very attentive. they will not make you wait for long. The took your orders patiently and the food came quite fast. Very good service The food This is where everybody can expect to have a big running drooling. We ordered the tempura and it's a must. The tempura is really one of the best. Probably because the shrimp is big and very fresh. Also, the batter they used for the tempura was perfect. It was sooo sooo soo crispy outside and inside was fresh ! When you added it to the dipping sauce, oh god ! You will say my mouth just visited heaven. The tuna also great. It melt in your mouth. We also had the bento to go for our meal ont he plane. Oh Boy.. everybody look at us with a jealousy ! It smells so good and it really tastes so good. The atmosphere It is decorated so you feel like one of the restaurants in japan. It was not that bad. And it is very good for hang out, casual dining or just chit chat. The location very easy to find with big sign. Parking should not be a problem as well Will I go back ? Oh Yesss.... I can fly now to Kona just to eat the food !!!

I went for lunch there for two days, the Pupu tray, weekend lunch special is pretty good, the other day I ordered fried rice, a bit salty though. The tea there is really Good!!!

First of all if you are relying on Yelp to give the proper address, it is wrong. The restaurant is across from Aloha Kayak & in between Shell gas station and Japanese temple near Nahenahe LP. I ordered the miso butterfish special for $15.25, which came with vegetables (peas, carrots, lima beans, green beans, and corn) that is out of place on the dish. The veggies were ok. The special also came with miso soup, which had a good flavor but no nori, rice, pickled cucumber and pickled daikon radish. The fish itself was a little overcooked but had a good flavor. Luckily they had the shrimp tempura for $17, which is usually a dinner item (I came for lunch with a friend). The tempura comes with miso soup, rice, and pickled cucumber. The batter has some ginger in it, and is light. The shrimp and vegetables are fried nicely. Also got a side order of sashimi, which came as 5 slices for $5. The fish was fresh and good quality. This is a great mom and pop place to eat some nice Japanese food.

My wife and I had our first date here 12 yrs ago. We come here now and then through out the year but always on our anniversary. It's not the fanciest place around but the food is good and it is very comfortable.

Had my wife and I known about this place the first day of our trip to the Big Island, we would have eaten here every day, and quite possibly every meal. We ordered several things here, but the standout for me was the sashimi. The sashimi here is never frozen, fresh fish. If you had sushi or sashimi anywhere on the mainland, chances are, it has been frozen. It may look fresh, but if you've seen the color and texture on a fresh, never-frozen sashimi, you can tell the difference right away. The natural deep red glaze on fresh sashimi looks like a work of art, and the frozen ones look like beaten rags with red food coloring. The first time we came here, my wife ordered a set meal that came with 5 pieces of sashimi on the side. We shared the sashimi, and decided that it wasn't enough, so we ended up ordering 3 more side orders of sashimi. $5.00 for a side of sashimi that has never been frozen is a bargain. We also ordered the sauteed ahi tuna and miso butterfish (a special not on standard menu.) You can tell by the texture and taste of the fish that they were probably never frozen, caught fresh off the pier. Just awesome. I can't find that no matter how much money I pay around where I live. The miso sauce, on the thickest butterfish steak I have every seen, used plenty of sake and had a very nice flavor. I usually don't comment on miso soup because there is usually nothing to comment about in most restaurants, but the miso soup here was excellent. I think they used clam and fish broth to get the flavor, whereas most other places use prepackaged MSG/dashinomoto for their flavor in their miso soup. All of the little things like this, where the Teshima restaurant doesn't compromise their quality, kept bringing us back as much as we could manage during our short stay. All fish items are highly recommended. Their insistence on using fresh ingredients, and maintaining uncompromising quality earns them very high marks in my book. It just doesn't get any better than this.

Other than it being a divey-looking place on the highway there is nothing that wasn't great about Teshima's. We were heading out of Kona from the airport to the place we were staying in Volcano so quite a drive and worried we wouldn't find any food after town. We headed out and saw Teshima's, what a find!!!! Linda our server was awesome as was Jason and everyone else we met there, including Teshima herself, who celebrated her 103 birthday in June! Guess I should talk about the food. It was awesome! They had a garlic tempura shrimp, which was more panko breadcrumbs than tempura, but awesome. The kicker were the meals, which both came on huge trays filled with miso soup, various pickled salads and in my case excellent beef teriyaki and the best shrimp tempura I have had! Looking forward to trying for lunch on Thursday's as I saw reviews about tempura lunch!

This is one of those places I would never have tried on my own, but for Yelp reviews showing me the way. It's nothing to look at, but the food is excellent. The place was filled with locals who know where to find good food.

Whenever I am on the Big Island of Hawaii, I always stop by Teshima Restaurant at least once. It's well worth the drive. Teshima Restaurant offers great food and quiet, local ambiance at a reasonable price. Everything on the menu that I've had has been fabulous, but I especially adore the tempura. I usually go for lunch on days when the frying vats are fired up so that I can order Teishoku No. 3., a lunch tray consisting of Miso Soup, Sashimi, Sukiyaki, Shrimp Tempura, Sunomono, Tsukemono and rice, but everyday also offers a daily lunch special. It is only my adoration for the tempura served here that has kept me from sampling everything on the menu. The ambiance of the restaurant is one that time has forgotten. The restaurant is owned and operated by the Teshima family, who had originally opened the main dinning area as a general merchandise store in 1929 and expanded it in 1940 to the restaurant that it is today. They do not accept credit cards, but the prices are such that the meal is quite unlikely to break the bank. For casual dining with that features a traditional, home-cooked Japanese meals, Teshima offers high-quality and reasonably priced food that bring patrons back to its location time and time again.

Shaky atmosphere that is overcome by great food. Freshest Ahi I've had on the island so far.

This is a quaint Japanese Restaurant that could be easily missed if you're not looking for it. I have been to Japanese and Sushi places in the past, but not one like this which is a good thing. I felt like I was eating more of an authentic meal here. I ordered the teishoku for lunch which came with sashimi, some pickled cucumers and cabbage, miso soup, rice, and a dish that was a mixture of chicken, tofu, carrot, and udon noodles. It was very delicious and was full by the end. It was nice to eat something that had a variety of flavors and healthy. And I think I saw a comment about the owner passing away----wrong! She's still going at age 106!

This is a local kine Japanese Restaurant. This is a landmark for giving directions. It is an old establishment which has been sustained by generations of local patrons. The Japanese Breakfast rocks! You cannot beat the Pupu Platter on the weekends 1130-130. See you there.

it's so hard for a tourist like me to find a non-touristy food establishment on the kona side of the island. this place reminded me of my grandma's home cooking - right down to the yummy pumpkin pie and oatmeal cookies i had for dessert. i will definitely be back next time i'm in kona.

Most authentic jap food I had in a long time! I'm happy with the tempura teishoku set I ordered. The tempura was crispy and sashimi was very fresh! The saimen and udon reminded my hubby of home. :)

Am I missing something??? I was disappointed after reading all these great reviews. I found the restaurant to be dirty, which set the tone for the meal to come. The floor was so dirty I didn't want to put my purse on it. I had the seafood trio and the sashimi had fish blood at the bottom of the bowl it was served in. The tempura was greasy and the batter didn't stick to the vegetable/shrimp. The miso soup initially tasted nice but had grit in it as I continued to drink it. I didn't have the best feeling when I finished my meal. I just wished I hadn't eaten here. Sorry to be going against the grain here but it's my experience and taste. I wanted to really like this place based on how long it's been here but I've honestly had better food on Kauai and Maui.

How did this place get 4.5 stars? We ordered the number 2 combo and the udon. Worst udon we ever had! Wowzers! The combo was just ok. We are disappointed with yelp's reviews for this restaurant.

Absolutely the best Japanese restaurant on the island!!! It's just like what my grandmother used to make, but maybe even better. Breakfast lunch and dinner, it's all fantastic. And everything on the menu is ono (delicious). I could eat here everyday and on some of my week long trips to the island, I have been known to go there 5-6 times. Luv it!

I loved Teshima's. This is a family run business outside of Kona area. Most of the locals had mentioned this restaurant and had to try it for myself. We were in for such a treat. I felt like I was having a Japanese meal with family. I loved the tempura shrimp and the shrimp was so big and cooked just right. My husband had the teriyaki steak and it was so tender an so full of flavor. I met Grandma Teshima and she was turning 105 years old and she was such a nice lady to meet. Please stop by there and I highly recommend this restaurant! I will go back everything I am in the Kona area.

I almost did not want to write this review as I don't want to bring down the reputation of this cute little family owned restaurant. The service there was excellent, but the food was just not very good, to put it bluntly. There I said it. I really wanted to like the place given it's charming back story and the fact that its a local favorite. The place hasn't been updated for a very long time and the ambiance leaves something to be desired. We ordered the #2 combo which came with a variety of things including miso soup, sashima, fried fish, some kind of noodle dish with beef and some small vegetable salads. We also ordered the special which was panko breaded shrimp. The combo was plenty for me and my husband. Overall, we found the food generally disappointing, and that's all I want to say about that.

I was hungry. This place was open. It was closest by. It satisfied my hunger. The ahi sashimi was good. A little pricey. But other places are even pricier. So there ya go.

We ate at Teshima 3 times, lunch twice and breakfast. The restaurant is open everyday from 6:30am-1:45 pm then 5:00 pm-9:00pm. They take all major credit cards. The restaurant is family run. We were waited on by the great great grand daughter of the original owner. Talk about family run consistency wow. The service is consistently friendly and courteous. Some would call the restaurant old and run down. I would call it quaint and clean. The food is identified as japanese. It does have japanese dishes such as tempura and sashimi. I would describe the food as japanese hawaiian american. It is a mixture. The food as I ate it brings back fond childhood memories of dishes that my mother prepared. She adapted her japanese recipes and cooking to the available ingredients. The results were delicious. This is what Teshima does well. The food style is very good home style cooking. An example of adaptive cooking is the breakfast. You can get a very good japanese style breakfast with fried fish miso soup tsukemono sunomono kamaboko egg and rice or you can have bacon eggs rice or toast and pancakes. The rice can be fried rice. Both breakfasts were delicious. You can have kona coffee or hot toasted rice green tea to drink with your breakfast. There are so many breakfast lunch and dinner choices that you would have to be a local to try them all. I am sure they are all delicious. The restaurant is a local favorite. I will eat here anytime that I am in kona. The restaurant is 9 miles from Kailua. It is about a 15 minute drive. I give Teshima 5 stars for the reasonably priced delicious food and for a great family run business.

Super average Japanese food. The service was poor...a table that was seated after us, was served first. We also did not receive the complimentary edamame. I would go back.

This place is a local favorite and tradition for my family. This is family owned and operated and hasn't changed much over the years. It's your typical japanese restaurant where generations of the family work and you can tell they enjoy the customers. My family has known Mrs Teshima (who is in her 100s yes that's right 100s) for awhile and there many great family memories i have going here and seeing her come down to help out once in awhile. The sweet and sour spare ribs are probably my favorite item on the menu. They have a great variety of items on the menu to help appease a variety of tastebuds. It's a nice place to get away from all the hustle and touristy places in Kona without being that far away from it if you're visiting and on vacation. They're open mostly just for dinner but they do take reservations if you have a large group. Prices aren't bad either which helps since it's cash only, but they do have an atm machine on hand if you don't have enough. Highly recommend a stop if you're in the area

After a wonderful week of food on the Big Island, we were determined to find the best Japanese restaurant around for our final dinner. We researched over 5 restaurants in or around Kailua-Kona and decided to take the short 10 minute drive south to Teshima. It was THE BEST!!!! Loved the authenticity of it with the small plates/bowls, and the fish was the freshest we had all week... and we ate A LOT of raw fish on the trip!! Friendly family environment, great service, amazing food!!! We can't wait to go back!

  • Dominique Q.

The restaurant stands directly at the Big Island's main highway, so forget about the view, and the building is not really fancy. But the food is excellent (I had delicious fish and vegetable tempura, and perfectly fresh sashimi) and the owners make you feel like family - For instance, today was the anniversary of the aunt's passing away, her photo was on display in the middle of the restaurant and everyone got free cake to celebrate! If you'd like to get in touch with the true Hawaii as experienced by the locals, this is the place to go. Payment by cash only (and quite a bargain, too!)

  • Alex B.

The place is nothing special to look at (kind of a typical "greasy spoon" vibe), but the service and the food are very good. Prices are actually decent too considering it's Hawaii! We both had the same lunch special; lots of small dishes on a tray with many different things to sample including beef, fish, various veggies - all of it quite good.

Always a family fave when I visit Kona - plenty of tasty Japanese homestyle cooking (great teishoku and pork chops!), pleasant decor and reasonably priced. Check out the home baked cookies for sale in the basket - thin and crispy choco-chip, yumm. Also, contrary to an earlier review I saw Grandma Teshima just a couple of weeks ago at the restaurant - looking as fit as ever.

The food here was just so-so. The Saimin was bad, don't order it. The shrimp tempura was actually pretty good but wasn't enough to carry my rating above 2 stars.

Having spent a lot of time in Kona as teenager, we recently went back to do some exploring. We took Hwy 11 while heading to South Kona and we passed by Teshima Fine Foods. We heard that Teshima had great food so we wanted to try it for ourselves. We weren't disappointed! I ordered some beef curry with rice and some shrimp tempura and my wife ordered some sashimi and tempura as well. The portions of beef in the curry were huge, grizzle-free, very tender, and they were well flavored in curry. It was amongst the best Japanese curry I have ever had. The shrimp in the were large, buttery-flied and battered. The dipping sauce for the tempura was a little sweeter than I was used to but it complimented the shrimp nicely. The tsukemono was homemade, very fresh and, like the tempura sauce, a little sweet. My wife enjoyed her meal as well. The meal was very affordable. Had we not had a list of other sites to see further down the road I would have stayed to eat and drink much more. I would highly recommend Teshima's for anyone looking for something authentic, delicious, and reasonably priced away from the scene in Kona where there is a Bubba Gump Shrimp where Spindrifter used to be. So sad. Go to Teshima, eat and be happy.

If you are in Kona and want to get a good quality, authentic japanese meal. Teshima is the place to go. It is a simple family run restaurant that the staff are sure to ask your name, where you came from, and who you are visiting (even if you aren't visiting anyone). It is a place the locals live by and with good reason in my book. My family has been away from Kona for years now, yet when we are able to make it back into town, our family is sure to stop by for a bite and the people there are bound to remember us even if it has been years. The food is good and decently priced. What more could one ask for?

This place is a cute little Japanese restaurant in Kona. It isn't like anywhere on Oahu (I'm here in Kona on a business trip) and I can't name one place on Oahu that has the same awesome family vibe AND good food. I got the Deep Sea Trio ($20) which was excellent. It's a lot of food for me and I couldn't finish it all. =( Me and my coworkers then shared the Chocolate Truffle ($5).... sooooooooooooooo good. I would definitely get it again!! The service was great and the food matched the service. I'd definitely return on my next trip out here!

My wife and I enjoyed a low-key anniversary dinner here. It was a last minute decision to go to Teshima's and we called an hour before we arrived and got a reservation by the window. Very intimate, clean, casual (shorts/slippers) setting and you can tell that they have a lot of regulars. Plenty of parking. Not much of a view but the food was fantastic: I had the steak (medium rare) and tempura shrimp and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of meat served. It was seasoned very well, no A1 sauce required, a little more on the medium side, but I ate the whole thing. The shrimp tempura is the best I have had in a LONG time - in terms of size, crispness, and taste. My wife had the seafood trio (fried fish, sashimi, shrimp tempura) and she really enjoyed it. The servings look small but she was stuffed by the end. Neither of us had space for dessert. Quick, friendly service - looks like a very family oriented staff. We don't live in the area, but will definitely come back the next time we are in the Captain Cook area!

  • Jan D.

I felt like the prices here was quite expensive for what you get. You get a lot of veggies and rice but not so much of the seafood and all. However, i guess you are best going here during the lunch time rather than dinner. It has no air conditioning so dress in the lightest clothes possible. We actually ordered the #3 combo (shrimp tempura) and it was pretty tasty. Therefore, this place gets an A-Ok rather than the outstanding b/c of the price and the food does not match up. But hey! you are in Hawaii!!

  • Timothy H.

Great Japanese food, awesome shrimp tempura, very authentic. They open at 5 for dinner and when we arrived at 503 I was expecting to be one of the only people in the restaurant but boy were we wrong. People must have been waiting for it to open as there were only two tables left! And by 530 we overheard the waitresses saying they were no longer taking reservations for the rest of the night! So if you want to come here I'd recommend making a reservation ahead of time, and it'd be worth the effort. The orders: Seafood trio: tempura, fish, tuna sashimi, pickled sides: great great great. The sashimi wasn't as impressive as I'd hoped but everything had good flavor and was very clean - a welcome reprise from most of the heavy stuff we had been eating while on the island. Kettle udon: very tasty, with a cute presentation Beef curry: it was good, not great One of the combos: tempura, sukiyaki, sashimi: sukiyaki was done pretty well, not too sweet. Portions are not big, but you get a lot of variety. The green tea is EXCELLENT! the service is also great - everyone is very nice. 5 stars all around. Note: be aware that the restaurant is a cell phone dead zone - no service and no data, so if you need something you'll have to step outside

Outstanding is what I have to say. To have authentic Japanese food was a treat. The #3 combo is a must!!! It was delicious. The kids had the chicken teriyaki dish. It was the best I have ever had. The udon soup was great. This restaurant is a must go to. We loved it!

I feel a little guilty giving one star. Maybe they had a bad night. I love seeing all the pictures of the original owner and reading about her past. This is a family run restaurant. They have two sections to this restaurant and we were seated at the bar area. Upon seating there was a roach chillaxin on the wall. We ignored it and started looking what we should order. Their menu is huge with mixed American and Japanese food. We order couple bento boxes that was just tasteless and didn't look very appetizing. Their fish was so thin, barely had any meat. While we were eating, another roach flew across our table and landed on the wall right next my daughter. We changed table, however, we lost our appetite. The service was slow and we didn't feel welcomed. Not worth the expensive prices.

I was so excited to try this place out after seeing all the hype on yelp while on my honeymoon. I was ok with the restaurant not having the greatest of view, but the food wasn't as amazing as I thought it'd be. I ordered the deep sea trio while my husband ordered the nabeyaki udon. The udon was alright -- nothing spectacular. The deep fish trio wasn't as delicious as i had hoped. The only thing the stood out was the shrimp tempura-- was indeed delicious. The rest of the trio was lackluster in comparison-- especially the fried fish--- it was incredibly dry.

This was on our list while visiting the Big Island. I ordered the Teishoku #3 which was a great deal. It was a dinner set that came with sukiyaki, tempura (shrimp and vegetable), tuna sashimi, miso soup, and two little dishes of tsukemono and sunomono, and a bowl of rice. I believe the price was $21! Everything was great. Sukiyaki is a great dish to have over rice and this one was no different. I wish I could've had more variety in the sashimi, but no complaints. The sashimi was fresh and thinly sliced. The best part of this big combination was no surprise.. the shrimp tempura! It seemed to be breaded in Panko which gave it that extra crispiness. And get this.. there was not one, but two shrimp in one piece of tempura! I was given two pieces of these double shrimp tempura along with a couple pieces of vegetable tempura. The service was great. We were brought some tea in an antique kettle along with edamame at the beginning of the meal and were checked upon throughout the night. I enjoyed learning about this restaurant's/family's history by watching the television that was playing their documentary.

The server was very enthusiastic and kind. I really enjoyed the casual and friendly atmosphere. The restaurant is family-owned and run so there is a lot of family memorabilia on the walls, which is nice. Our food was decent, the best dish was definitely the beef sukiyaki. The miso butterfish was good with exception to the canned corn they threw on the side. The sashimi was fine in texture, taste and freshness. Not amazing and lacking some staple japanese dishes, but a nice local dining spot!

On my last trip to Hawaii I made a point to come to this place. I have been craving the Portuguese sausage fried rice omelette for a sometime, and I am happy to say I wasn't disappointed. The food and service was good, and we all left full and happy. I can't wait until the next time I come for a visit.

I was working in the Kailua-Kona, & Kealakekua area yesterday, and upon Brian M. giving me a tip on checking out Teshima's. Teshima's it was, for yesterdays lunch! It was a glorious day in Kealakekua yesterday.........as it was fairly clear, with an light dusting of rain, cooling down a hot summer's day, When I drove to Teshima's,I knew there were only a few parking stalls in front of the restaurant, but lucky for me, the 1st stall right by the entrance was open - just for me! Thank you parking gods!!!! I park my rental car, & walk on into the restaurant. What I really like about dining at these old style local restaurants is the old time decor, and history of the place. I was not surprised that this restaurant had a very strong local following, as all the tables were taken when I walked in, and I had to wait a few minutes before I could secure a table. Upon scanning the menu, I decided on the Wednesday "Chef Special" of the day, which consisted of - Kalbi Ribs & Vegetable Tempura. With the chef special, you get a bowl of rice, Miso Soup, Tsukemono (Pickled Vegetables), Sunomono (Japanese Cucumber Salad). A really great deal, as this delicious meal came up to just $13.28, with tip $16.38! They serve a very generous amount of food, everything tasted so fresh, and I gotta tell you, the vegetable tempura tasted so light, even if it was deep fried! The Kalbi ribs were soft & juicy! So flavorful! Eating here, reminds me like I was eating at grandma's house! Upon paying for my meal, I asked the cashier if Mrs. Teshima was still around.........unfortunately, she had passed last year at a ripe old age of 106 years old! What an amazing life she had! I also notice a message from Mrs. Teshima (that was framed by the cashier's window).......I was reading it when I got distracted (as I had to pay for my meal). I wished I had taken a photo of it, as the message was very thoughtful. If I could remember what I saw briefly about her message, she basically was talking about - "Success in life". Success is not measured by the amount of money you have, or possessions you acquire over a lifetime. Success is measured by having a happy family, & wonderful friends in your life. I will have to go back here one day to take a photo of this message.........if I ever get to live till 106, I hope to be as wise as Mrs. Teshima! If you're ever in the Kealakekua area..........it's worth the trip to stop by at Teshima's!

I've been to Teshimas 4 times and have enjoyed it each time. Come here for good local style Japanese food in a restaurant that has been in Hawaii for generations. Last night I had the beef teriyaki and shrimp tempura and it was good. My companion had the pork chops. Teshimas is not a fancy place, but if you're in the mood for some good comfort food, come by this Hawaiian tradition.

The boy & I loved Teshima so much that we came here twice in two days. Serious love. It has such a great family feel to it - you can tell that the legacy of Grandma Teshima lives on. It's so amazing to me how many lives she was able to touch [and the fact that she lived to be over 100 & still worked at the restaurant!]. I loved walking around & seeing & feeling all of the history behind the restaurant. Everything we had here was good, but most memorable for me were the udon & the shrimp tempura! Sooooo good. Oh and the grilled butterfish. Yum. If everybody lived by the same standards Grandma Teshima lived... the world would be a much better place. So glad that her family is able to carry on her legacy.

Excellent place for shrimp tempura - the best crispy lightly coated batter and not too greasy. Love going to local family owned restaurants like this. Service was a bit slow and getting out of parking was tricky when cars are going so fast. At least I was lucky to find a spot outside of he restaurant.

Tasty food. We enjoyed the miso butter fish and teishoku #2 at this charming family-owned restaurant. Great service. The lady who served us was very friendly and helpful. Reasonable price. Our bill averaged out to around $24 per person for a deeply satisfying dinner.

I don't remember how we found this place 5 years ago but we are so happy we did. It's such a great little family run business. After a day of Kona Coffee tours and tasting, it's nice to end a great day with a better night. I got the beef sukiyaki ala carte, my husband got the same thing but as a combo dinner and my kids got two teri chicken skewers. The service was quick and friendly. The portions weren't all that big but the quality and taste of the food made up for it. It opens at 5 on the weekdays so we try to get there at 5 because parking can be tricky and it gets crowded.

The best tuna sashimi I have had outside Tsukiji market. And everything else we ordered was really good, too. Great place to pick up bento boxes for your excursion or flight. Keep it up, guys!

Don't get why rated so high. Don't like the combo. Honestly, the taste is below average out of all Japanese restaurant I've been to. Shrimp tampura is the average Americanized one. My parents ordered Udon noodles, not as bad.

Yup, second visit here and they have satisfied. First visit I had the #3 with extra shrimp tempura, second visit was the seafood trio and extra shrimp tempura. My party had the pork chops, was good his said, butterfish is alright, had wayyy better miso style. But other than that, it's a great place for a Japanese fix. Price is not bad compared to other Japanese places.

We go to Teshima's for Sunday breakfast whenever we can. It's like having a small town diner with all the locals there. I order the Japanese Breakfast, and my beloved gets the pancakes. Then we share. Best pancakes on the island! They even ask how you like your bacon cooked. Even if you've never had a Japanese breakfast, it's worth a try if you like fish. For many of our mainland guests, it's a walk on the wild side. But all have loved it. We used to go to the touristy places to have our breakfast out, but now we only go to Teshima's. Not only do we love the staff, we save enough money to be able to eat there more often.

Tempura is so tasty, very light, no heavy oil. And super crispy! They do the shrimp justice! I wanted to order more but I was so stuffed. I ate every thing on my number 3 combo dinner special. Sukiyaki was good, this was perfect after my long hike down captain cooks trail. Staff is super friendly, They greet you with complimentary edamame and green tea. This the best meal so far I've had here on the big island.

Like stepping back in time! A must visit for anyone who wants to experience an amazing old school local Japanese restaurant ambiance. The food was so delicious and made me feel like I was 12 years old, back eating at places like Suehiros and Kabukis with my family. The shrimp tempura was really great, and I don't normally like shrimp tempura too much. After eating at very touristy places in Kona and Waikoloa, Teshima's was such an unforgettable experience. I will definitely be back every time I'm in Kona.

Man, I cannot see what all the hype is about with this place. When we walked in, the whole place smelled like the toilet was clogged up for 3 days. The food is just edible but so is a quarter pounder at McDonalds! I can make better Japanese food than this place and except all I know is how to boil water. Okay.... I can grill some mean steaks. The sashimi was not fresh, the portions were tiny, and the rice was mushy; tasted like some cheap fake rice imported from North Korea. Sukiyaki was basically jelly noodles mixed with soy sauce and some leftover protein. The beef was basically a flavorless pan fried New York steak and it was small. The shrimp tempura was pretty good but far from being the best I've ever had. I'll give them that. The fried fish was flavorless and dry. My daughter, when she was 6 years old, cooked better with her Mattel oven. We were all hungry afterwards and we stopped for pizza on the way back to the hotel. Maybe their main chef took the night off when we were there. The place was empty and that's a bad sign. Yelper's have let me down once again; c'mon meng! $100+... mouth to toilet in 8 hours! I'll just get ripped off in town for better Japanese food the next time I'm in the mood for a Japanese meal. This place deserves 1 star but for effort, they get 2 stars. I'll settle for a MRE before I eat here again.

The beef tomatoes is delicious. It comes with white rice, cucumber salad, vegetables , hot tea and miso soup. The entire meal was good. The beef stew was tasty and everything tasted so fresh. Definitely recommend this place

I mean it isn't bad- maybe my expectations were too high given the previous reviews, or maybe I ordered the wrong thing (an uninspired Saimin- I've had much better elsewhere). My husband loved the shrimp tempura appetizer but I was underwhelmed. Service was friendly and fast, was expecting better food. In any case, avoid the Saimin!

We decided to do a tour of the Big Island, heading south from Waikoloa, and decided to stop in Teshima for lunch. The restaurant itself is directly on the highway, and there is parking out front. Walking in, the place is not very fancy, but there are lots of old photos, especially of the 106 year old owner that recently passed away. You can tell that the place is a locals hangout. We ordered: Black cod lunch: the cod was very soft and fatty, and was cooked well, although I wish I would have been broiled to crisp up the skin more. Tempura and sashimi combo: the tuna sashimi was fresh, and the tempura was nice and light, some of the best tempura that I have had. It also came with a piece of fried fish, but that part of the lunch was just ok (a little fishy). Although it is a little out of the way, you should definitely try Teshima for some family style cooking in a no-frills, local place to eat.

Great food, lousy service. Had to walk up to someone to ask where to be seated, they didn't even seem sure at first, but figured it out. From there we looked at the menu's figured out what we wanted and literally had to catch the waiters attention before he came up. Free edamame and water were served, he took our order courteously as expected. My food came out and part of it wasn't even ready yet, and my wife's took at least five more minutes to come out. It's nice that they don't let things just sitting under a heat lamp, but seriously, you work in a kitchen and should have at least some idea of cooking times. Like I said, the food was dynamite. Shrimp tempura was light and flavorful. The steak was a perfect medium rare and seasoned exquisitely. The miso soup? Quite possibly the best I've ever had! After we finished we sat there for about twenty minutes waiting for our check. Finally we decided to just get up and go directly to the cashier. While in line our waiter handed us our check.

This little gem is tucked away in South Kona and is a must for any visit to the Big Island. It's one of those places where you can feel the love in the food the minute you walk in the door. We had the delicious Ahi in the panko breadcrumbs w/ a delicious miso soup. And OMG the apple pie a la mode...wow. Excellent service in a warm inviting atmosphere - put it on your list for a big dose of authentic Japanese aloha love!

While on vacation, my husband and I drove by this place for days and I insisted on wanting to try this place before we left the Island. Have you ever idolized a food spot because the place had been there for years and that means they must be doing something right? BIG Disappointment! I ordered the side of grilled miso butterfish to go and then the lady at the counter told me it will be ready in 10 minutes. 20 mins later, I got my food and got to the car and noticed that the butterfish was prepared wrong (breaded and fried). I brought it back and asked to have miso on top of the fish since I was in a rush. While the lady at the counter was nice, the food turned out to be big mush of a mess. The fish lasted sloppy and mushy and there were a lot of scales and bones in fish too. I ended up spitting out much of the fish because I didn't have the patience to sort out the bones and the meat in my mouth. I hate to give this place a low rating because the people in there were nice and it is a Big Island staple, but the fish was just so disgusting :-/.

This is extremely awesomely tasty, very down home Japanese comfort food. I'm so full after our dinner tonight OMG!!! +1 on the shrimp tempura being the best ever. The tempura sauce was delicious, the batter PERFECTLY light, the shrimp sweet and tender. Big portions, tasty sides on the bento, all in all we can't wait to come back to this family restaurant next time we visit the big island. :) :) :)

The food here is exceptional. There aren't many restaurants that serve "local style" Japanese food that tastes home cooked, but you get that here. Their shrimp tempura tastes great, the batter is light & flaky and always impresses. Their fried fish is simple yet tasty, probably my favorite fried fish that I've ever ate at a restaurant. The oyako donburi is delicious as well, the sauce is tasty and the chicken isn't dry. Just an epic place to eat at, and you really can't go wrong ordering anything here. Whenever I'm in Kona I make the short drive down to Kealakekua as often as I can to eat here...

Hands down one of the finest Japanese experience ever! Food was fresh, delicious and authentic. Ambience offered simplicity with character. Service was all smiles. It was refreshing to see a place that has managed to hold on to it's history. Best of all not too heavy on the budget considering most food on the island is expensive. Enough people have raved about the shrimp tampura and its worth repeating...one of the best I have had. I ordered Japanese dinner #3. Try it...you will not be disappointed. Looking forward to a revisit soon.

Teshima's is wonderful -- like eating at your Japanese grandma's home! Such delicious comfort food, home-style atmosphere, and served with genuine kindness. I've LOVED everything I've tried -- sukiyaki, tempura, Teshima omelette fried rice, bento lunch boxes, sunemono. Everything was fresh and mouth-watering. We plan to eat here every single day that we get to be on the Big Island!

If you are looking for good traditional Japanese food, this is definitely the place to go. Very friendly service and delicious food. Food came out very quickly Miso Butterfish: Very succulent fish that melts in your mouth. The flavoring knocked this dish out of the water. Very fair price for butterfish these days. I would definitely recommend ordering this dish. Deep Sea Trio: Sashimi, Shrimp Tempura, and Fried Fish. Sashimi was very fresh, Shrimp Tempura was large and very crispy, and the Fried Fish was very moist.

Teshima Restaurant isn't an upscale place, but it was clean and the food & service were very good. Generous portions. Green tea & tasty edamames were served when we first arrived. My husband ordered the Kona Beef Curry Stew (a dinner special) and I had the Beef Teriyaki & Shrimp Tempura (a Sunset Dinner combo). Both dinners came with with cooked vegetables, rice, miso soup, and a yummy pickled vege dish called tsukemono. My husband ate everything on his plate, but I was very full and had to take home some of the Teriyaki. We'll definite go back the next time we're on the Kona side of the Big Island.

You have to overlook the outdated tiring deco - I figure the place had not been renovated for a long time. Having said that the restaurant had been in the family for 4 generations. The food is like one of those cooked by your aunt. The Tuna Sashimi was my favorite, it is local and it is fresh. My seafood combo dinner was good, no complaint here. I just felt like Japanese that night while I was on holiday in Kauai. I figure there are plenty of Japanese descendants living in the island, can't go wrong.

Feeling hungry on Hawaii Island and you're heading south from Kailua Kona? Give Teshima Restaurant a visit. On my visit, I had the Bento Box Lunch- luncheon meat, fried fish, teriyaki beef, egg roll, tsukemono, and sunomono. When you eat in, the Bento Box includes miso soup and hot tea. Ono : )

THIS RESTAURANT IS WHAT MADE ME SLAP MYSELF IN THE FACE FOR BEING SELFISH & NOT SHARING MY EXPERIENCES WITH THE WORLD!!! (Sorry for yelling, Teshima's is just that good) THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to share their Teshima experience with the world. I was on my honeymoon last month in Kona, Hawaii and my husband & I wanted to experience the island like locals. One afternoon after driving halfway around the island our hunger pangs almost got the best of us. We wanted to find a delicious, authentic, Japanese restaurant with affordable prices, and good service to boot (needy aren't we?). Sure enough Teshima's kept showing up on Yelp but we continued to drive up and down the street passing this little wonder of the world because the - right - next to - a - main - highway - sans - "Hawaii" - view made us question it's worthiness. Here's what you need to know about Teshima's: -The food is AUTHENTIC, DELICIOUS, & COMPLETELY REASONABLY PRICED -If the elder Japanese lady with a sweet smile happens to be your server, you are in for a treat. She is part of the family & a doll. -Your food will be served at lighting fast speed, but do not worry - it is the furthest thing from fast food. -The amount of food that comes with your meal is ABSURD for what you pay (I mean this in the best possible way). - Plan your day accordingly because you will fall straight into "Kanack Attack" (said adorable elder lady taught us that this is Hawaiian for Food Coma) - It's been there FOREVER & the restaurant looks like a family museum filled with neat artifacts & family portraits...they even have a family video playing on a screen. From the very first time I learned what Yelp was, I used it to solve my super serious social problems...where should we eat? Let's try something new! Where do we go? What should we do? But i've been lazy & selfish and for never posting reviews til now, i'm sorry. If you are in the Big Island - visiting Teshima's is a MUST...no matter how long it takes you to get there.

I love love love teshimas. Well their food I should say I would give their food a 100 but for the service is a complete 0. I been to teshimas 3 times so far and every single time it's the same no one acknowledges that your there and finally when they realize that you have awkwardly stood there for over 5 minutes they seat u at your table and you literally have to walk up to the counters to let them know that your ready to order. And it's really sad because we love the food hands down. I still recommend going but just don't be surprised by their service.

What more can be said about Teshima restaurant? It is comfort food for all who live here. It has been changed little since it opened over 70 years ago. This is local Japanese food done well. There is a difference between local Japanese and Japanese food from Japan. This is not the same thing you would have in Japan, so dot not go expecting to eat what you ate in Tokyo. That being said, their tempura is the best you will find in Kona. This is a long time local favorite, and not only is the food good, but the ambiance of old school Kona along with sometimes visits from grandma Teshima (now 105 years old) is what makes this place so special. You know exactly what you are going to get here, there are no surprises. Good food, good people, good fun. My recommendation would be any of the teishokus or the deep sea trio. If you're not in the mood for that much food, the omuraisu (omelette rice) is good, and there is nowhere else in Kona that makes it.

Shrimp tempura!!! We love this family style restaurant. The sashimi always tastes very fresh and their hot green tea is literally the best I've tasted. As everyone will tell you, they're known for their shrimp tempura and for good reasons. Go early to get parking.

Service can be a little spotty, per usual, but this is still the best Japanese restaurant on the big island. Very old school and rich tradition. Grand Ma Teshima used to be there when I'd go, and it was a treat seeing her.

Unexpected stop for dinner on the way to drop someone at the airport, and I will be coming back! Very good food and combinations of food. It was well worth it. Family owned and has an interesting story. Friendly staff and quick service. Definitely try this place you won't be disappointed.

Our best meal in big island so far. We ordered teishoku #3 and nabeyakiudon with tempura. I gotta say the shrimp tempura is one of the best we have ever tested. The soup base and the miso soup also have very unique flavor. Everything is so good. We finished everything in our plate!! We have to come back to this place!

When you know the taste of good, traditional and authentic Japanese food - this restaurant will bring you back to those "tasty memories". I was passing by and decided to have Japanese food for lunch - without too much expectations, yet they really impressed me with traditional "Bento-style" lunch, served with seasoned pickles, some "secret formula" Teriyaki chicken (never had that kind of flavor before) and usual Japanese side-dishes. Food taste GREAT - yeah, and I know taste of Japanese food. Also, they do serve a very decent Green Tea - not like "green water" you usually see in other Japanese restaurants. After having my lunch over here - I realize why this place is popular and liked. Great job Gradma - you have created a great place for people to enjoy a real Japanese food at the Big Island! If you are like myself and do like Japanese food - you should have lunch or dinner over here, while at Big Island. It's not a fancy place, yet kind of feels just "right" - even at the time of my lunch I was the only "white" person in the restaurant ;-) Locals and Japanese-natives seem to like this place as well. Will come again, when I'm in the area!!!

  • Dwight H.

As many times as we've been to the Big Island, this was our first stop at Teshima-it won't be our last. This is some of the best tempura I've ever had, and the beef teriyaki was tender and excellent also. I'd definitely describe it as comfort food, sort of the Japanese/Hawaiian planters' version. But what differentiates it is the quality of the preparation. They use excellent ingredients and are careful about cook times and seasoning. A very good value, also.

    (4)
  • Patrica S.

Stopped by on the way back from black sand beach and had #3 special. The tempura was excellent thus the 3 stars. Otherwise average, the saimen broth had no flavor and small portion. Definitely would not drive the distance nor return.

Fresh fish, miso is really good and butterfish (black cod) melts into your mouth. Wasn't a fancy place - decor was dated and it was muggy inside but food was so great!

  • Tamara P.

This is a small, old family-friendly eatery that still carries the simple iconic atmosphere people have dined to for years. It's decor has remained the same since I can remember. Definitely don't come in here expecting to see one of those high class Japanese restaurants with waterfalls and authentic rocks from Japan and separate tatami rooms because you'll then be a bit disappointed. I'm a little surprised at how high the average ratings are for this restaurant. I guess one big reason is that they don't really have any competition nearby and they're a well-known family-run business that's been around for quite a long time. Plus it's owned and run by the cutest old lady who is well over a hundred years old, whom everyone refers to as "Grandma Teshima". It's so cute to see her strolling up and down the aisles and greeting the many local regulars, my parents included in that bunch. I always thought that their Japanese food was pretty average, but a little on the pricey side for such small portions. Maybe I'm a Japanese food snob because I am so used to the many Japanese restaurants both Oahu and California has to offer. I will probably be back the next time we're visiting family and friends in Kona because this is such a famous, iconic place. Plus anyone that knows anyone living in South Kona, someone always suggests Teshima Restaurant as the halfway meeting point for a meal or two.

This is a must each time I come to visit kona! I remember coming here years ago and seeing Mrs. Teshima working. She would always give us free sushi! This place has the best tempura and I can never decide exactly what I want. The last time I went I had the saimin, it was so tasty! The saimin broth was a little thicker and had a burst of flavor! Definitely a must have when in kona!

There are very few restaurants on the Big island that consistently deliver great quality Japanese food and as a local I can thoroughly recommend Teshima's for breakfast, lunch or dinner. While there are many other places to eat on the Big Island, Teshima's is a family business that has been around forever. In point of fact, Grandma Teshima just recently passed away at 106 and the family is continuing her tradition of hard work and serving high quality food. The sushi is outstanding and the tempura is one of the best I have tasted living both in NYC and SF and now calling Kona home. Prices are very reasonable for good quality food and the atmosphere is the same as it was over 20 years ago, comfortable and warm and the team there is super friendly. While I know the family personally and have eaten at every restaurant here on the Big island, I can truly say the food is consistently great and the prices extremely reasonable. Mrs. Teshima worked in the restaurant till she was over 100, and she ensured the food was always the focus......her family continues that tradition to this day.....Mahalo Lui noa for great food and consistent service outside the tourist corridor of Kona!

After reading all the reviews on yelp this was a must! What an overwhelming disappointment! Beef teriyaki and sukiyaki were inedible. Service poor. I've had better everything at Japanese restaurants at home. I just don't get the hype. Someone enlighten me please.

I've been here twice on my last two trips to the big island. The food here is great and the service is very friendly. I had the two egg breakfast with pancake along with a side of Mac salad. Best Mac salad I've had in Hawaii. Will definitely come back.

This Japanese style cuisine holds a special place in my heart. Tastes just like things grandma used to make for me along with the warm service. I especially enjoy the tempura and steak dinner combo. It comes with rice, miso soup and pickled veggies. Great service here as well.

  • Jen L.

They have to get 5 stars because of the combination of price, food and service. The individuals are friendly and attentive without being overbearing. They give you large quantities of food for a very good price. They take credit card, but if you'd like to take a tshirt or other things home keep in mind you'll need cash. There is an ATM though right inside.

Eat here! Don't hesitate. Awesome butterfish, pork chops, fried rice, pancakes, sashimi, bentos, tempura, pretty much everything breakfast lunch and dinner all Japanese style of course. This place has been around forever it's part of the areas history and us locals love this place! Tip: Ignore the hours on Yelp they are wrong, teshimas is open everyday of the week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Only closed for a few hours between lunch and dinner. Call for hours if anything!

Our annual trip to Kona wouldn't be complete without visiting Teshima's for some great food. We came for breakfast because I couldn't wait. I ordered the Japanese breakfast and my better half ordered the bacon and eggs which came with a free side of pancake. Food and service was simply wonderful as always.. Grandma Teshima is now 105yrs Old! I didn't get to see her but inquired about her and was told that she's still walking around with a cane. So good to be back again..feels like home!

Ate here for the first time tonight, we experienced prompt, friendly service and a quick turnaround time on the food. Though we came expecting sushi (which they do *not* have though Yelp had returned Teshima with 'sushi' as the search criteria...) we had the ahi plate--we did not expect it to be fried however it was very tasty--and the sashimi plate. Overall a very fulfilling dinner, I would come here again.

Teshima's is always a great experience. went for dinner with my brother, Ryan and his girlfriend, Paige. I had the steak and shrimp tempura plate. I got medium rare steak, nice and juicy! The tempura was crunchy and the shrimp was so soft, I really like their tempura sauce too. Excellent service and family friendly atmosphere makes every experience feel comfortable and homely. Also, try the apple pie ala mode with the green tea ice cream... Awesome!

This is the most authentic japanese food I've ever experienced. More than likely you'll be asking what a few of the menu items are exactly. Which is my only passing complaint.. A short description would help out. But that being said the service is amazing and they are more than happy to answer any questions. There are multiple selections that come in a kind of sampler platter so you can try man different dishes, while still being more than enough to fill you up. They also have some local hawaiian dishes that are quite good as well. They serve you hot green tea (the real kind) at the beginning of your meal with no charge which is very nice. Miso soup is quite good. Shrimp tempura is by far the best I've had. Lots of culture and history in the building and on the walls. Prices are fair.

Amazing restaurant with great service! My friends and I came here for some breakfast. We got the japanese breakfast and the 2 eggs breakfast. Both very delicious. 2 eggs came with choice of meat and pancakes. Japanese breakfast came with miso soup, cucumbers, lettuce, fried ahi, bowl of rice with furikake on top, seaweed, and fish cake. It was very tasty and I left the restaurant feeling very satisfied. Oh boy, added some guava juice and it was a perfect breakfast. It was not expensive either. Around 10 a person. Bill Tip: They do not charge for extra rice, so eat at your heart's content! One bowl of rice was enough for me though.

This place is great. Don't judge it by the outside. The server was very kind and patient and friendly. The food was amazing. We had a party of 8 and that included 4 kids and everyone loved what they had. I had a variety platter with rice, pickled veggies, miso soup and chicken with rice noodle, tempura shrimp and sashimi. It was all great. The only downside was the soup was only lukewarm. They provide tea and water. We also had two boats of sashimi... Not cheap at $18 per boat but it was amazing. The kids wanted at least 3 more boats. The desserts were also very good. One was a chocolate pudding and another was a custard pie. I enjoyed both. This place is really good and we plan to go here again before our vacation is over.

Being a "cash only" restaurant would typically prevent me from giving a perfect, five-star rating (because there is no reason to be "cash only" imo), but Teshima is really a must dine, even if you are not a big fan of traditional style Asian cuisine. Quick service, lots of dining options, good price and value (everything on the lunch menu is around $13), and each dish comes with several items so you can try many things in just one sitting (see my photos). If you are anywhere near Kona during your stay on the Big Island, I would highly recommend stopping into Teshima.

Coming to Kona for many years and just recently went here for dinner for first time. Great low key atmosphere. Staff is super friendly. Food is fantastic and prices very reasonable. Ahi boat special was perfect. If you are looking for great Japanese food at a local place then get in your car and drive the 20 min south of Kona and enjoy!

Was sadly disappointed by this meal and place. The place itself is in need of a remodel--feels very much like a hole-in-the-wall diner. Bad customer service: they seated us and then forced us to move for a larger party, our waitress had little knowledge of the menu (and had no idea of the nights specials), and overcharged us. Word of warning: the menu says a 1/2 carafe of sale for 6, that actually means one half glass of it. Initially they charged us 13 for two glasses (because 6+6 equals 13???) When we pointed out this, they changed it to 12. When we asked about the discrepancy with a carafe, they did nothing. The food is so so. The tempura, miso soup, and barley green tea is good but honestly not worth coming here for it. It's good, not great and with the dingy room, poor service, and not being cheap (20 a plate), I'd say skip it.

If you're heading South of Kailua-Kona, this is a terrific stop-off to fill-up on gas and get local Japanese food. It is a family-owned restaurant and they take pride in everything they do! If you're a local they will definitely recognize your face and are happy to see friends and family come visit. Even if you're not a local, they are happy to meet you and want to share in their family recipes. They're on the pricier side but at the same time they give high quality food so you won't leave disappointed. The menu is a full page of various cooked dishes. I ordered the "Teshima," an egg omelette fried rice for $12.50 and thought it was delicious! Boyfriend ordered a "Teishoku" which is a set plate for $19.25. The portions are on the smaller side but if you're looking for QUALITY, this is the place to go. They put a lot of detail into each item and each bite is full of flavor. You HAVE TO order the tempura. I can honestly say it's probably the very BEST tempura I've ever had....EVER. On my must visit list if you're in the area.

Great Japanese Restaurant! Whenever I'm in Kona I make it a point to stop at Teshima. The building that houses Teshima has the classic look of an old style Japanese shop. Definitely an eye catcher. Service - excellent. Such a friendly staff. Food - outstanding Parking - pretty good, but car pooling might be easier. Suggested dishes: Fried Rice Omelet Hekka Shrimp Tempura Teishoku

Great Japanese restaurant with a lot of history. It's located south of Kona on Highway 11. You'll need to keep an eye out for it especially if you go after dark or if it's your first time. The interior appears like it hasn't changed for decades but that's part of it's character. The staff is friendly and the menu offers a lot of simple, traditional dishes. We enjoyed the seafood trio combo and it was tasty. The tempura was crispy and the sashimi was fresh. Prices are good compared to what you get in Kailua. It's a great lunch or dinner stop if you're passing through the area. Definitely give it a try.

Love this place...retro old time Hawaii (not that phony faux Key West-like trash that the touri think is old Hawaii). Food is very good, as it should be for a place that's been here since before the war. Brings back so many memories. I love bringing my kids here so they can experience some of what I grew-up with. Did I mention the food is very good?

4.5 stars? The staff is very attentive, super fast service. The decore is very dated, worn out and tired. They could get by with the decor if they gave it a bit of elbow grease. Food....miso was weak. Portions very small, shrimp slightly overcooked as well as the sukiyaki weak on portions and meat way overdone.

This was my favorite restaurant on the Big Island. Right before leaving on our trip I asked my facebook friends where we should eat or if they had any recommendations. This was one of two that came through and a friend said, "I'm with locals, here's what they said". This is an old school japanese joint. I don't think they had sushi on the menu. When we walked in the waitress cut to the chase and told us that Tempura is their speciality. I'm so glad that she did. We ordered shrimp and vegetable tempura. I had a combo plate with Beef Teriyaki. All of it was outstanding, probably the best tempura we've ever eaten and my wife almost always gets some when we eat japanese. The service was friendly and efficient. We loved the old school cafeteria charm immensely. The attached bar looked like a blast - well lit and again, old school in appearance. I'd give the place 4.5 stars if possible, loving the decor, but knowing that it would need a slight upgrade to get the 5th star. We had some ice cream for dessert and wouldn't say it held up compared to the rest of dinner, but was fine. We liked the Kona Coffee flavor better than the Green Tea.

Love the small family run atmosphere here. I had been here for dinner in the past, actually last year when Grandma's cake was in the dining room. Decided to hit them up for lunch a few weeks ago. While the "cake " is now in the bar, everything else remains the same. Solid home cooked Japanese food at a very reasonable price. I had the chicken katsu lunch special, with green tea to drink. Awesome green tea I should say, served from a well seasoned pot with bamboo insert. The chicken was breaded in panko, crisped to a golden brown, delicious. Served with the obligatory sides of a typical plate lunch. My partner enjoyed a mixed bento plate. Still cash only, and no tempura at lunchtime. Easily overlooked for the genuine article. Home cooked food in an unpretentious throw back environment.

Awesome restaurant - they take credit cards. we had 1. Saimin 2. Beef Teriyaki and sashimi love the service, and menu. tons of options. The waitress was this lovely older Japanese lady, so friendly. You can tell they love their little restaurant. Very traditional Japanese food - what a joy.

Just what everyone is saying about this place: - incredibly gracious service in an old style, homey atmosphere - extremely good tempura and super fresh tuna sashimi...I think they also use fresh wasabi root, not the weaker powdered mix - very fast service, even on a busy night...we got our three combination dinners in about 5 minutes even though the restaurant was so full they chose to open the bar area for us to eat at - very reasonable prices We will be going back!

The food, service, staff are wonderful. They treat you like family. A must stop. Sashimi is very good. Kids love the saimin. My favorite is the teriyaki chicken. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Will visit again before we head home.

Before traveling to Hawaii I was expecting that the only food I would be eating at were these touristy places saying there authentic Hawaiian. Oh how wrong I was. This Japanese Restaurant has many high reviews and for good reason. It's that amazing. I've never been to Japan, but I am almost positive that if I ever do go, I will be getting food just like what I just ate. The owner knows her stuff and at 102 years old she still walks around and talks to all of her customers. Our waitress Linda was the best hostess/ waitress I have EVER had! She literally made us feel like we have known her our entire life and she sat down with us and explained the entire menu to us because a few of my family members never eat Japanese food because they thought they didn't like it. I am so happy I talked them into going here because it was soooooo goooood! The shrimp tempura was amazing, and I've had many like it but this place does it right. The way it's like and crunchy and almost melts in your mouth is great and the at all the sauces and juices flow together is perfect. Every one of our meals were out of this world and I have decided I want to move here. I could live on this stuff. This place alone is worth the visit to Hawaii and when I come back to the big island, you know where to find me.

A must stop for visitors and locals. Great value, tasty selection, and super quick service. What more can you expect from a restaurant? Definitely have the tempura. Great sauce and crispy batter. Could be the best we've had. Had the panko garlic shrimp appetizer...order two cause you'll eat the first order and want more, Recommend this to all who visit Kona.

Down home family style restaurant....Ya gotta love it.....

Food was okay extremely overpriced in compared to its portions. Service was horrible, from the time we sat it was about 15 minutes before the waiter came by to ask what we wanted to drink. The place is a hole in the wall and looks and feels dirty. I wonder what there health inspection score is or if they even inspect in Hawaii.

Good food...I've had worse in Japan! I had set #3, which was great because you could sample lots of things. Decor is tired, but fortunately I was there to eat, not look. I concur with everyone on the sashimi - best I've ever eaten.

We came here twice during our week-long vacation. They have specials that are unique to the day of the week. We came here on a Sunday and Friday - both specials had a good amount of variety. Absolutely agree with the other reviewers that the sashimi here is very, very good. But the cooked fish that came with some of the specials were also very tasty and well made. My wife's parents thoroughly enjoyed this place (and they come from a family of fishermen in Asia so they know their stuff). We also thought it was neat that the owner's daughter was a Fresno State graduate.

I have been coming here with my family since I was a little girl, so I definitely love this place for many of reasons. This is very well-known on the island as the BEST local Japanese restaurant on the island. This restaurant is a Family-Owned & Run - Japanese & Local Food Style Restaurant. Best Sashimi ever! Their Tempura is the BEST. Crispy, not too greasy, and the dipping sauce is delicious. The Teishoku #1,2,3, or the Seafood Trio are ta die for! Service is fast. Servers are very polite. Simple decor, Diner style. Grandma Teshima(103 years old) still frequents the restaurant They also have dishes like the famous Loco Moco, and the gravy is my favorite. Not too thick, but just right. ***Must try the Chocolate Mousse, YUM*** Ask for Christian(Server) He's the best :) They now take all major credit cards!

Fabulous food. Go for the food and the kind service not the atmosphere. The sashimi ahi was to do for melt in your mouth. They said tempura was their specialty and they delivered. Order #3 or the deep sea trio and you won't go home disappointed.

  • Anna P.

Having lived on the Big Island for over a decade, I'd been meaning to try Teshima's forever, but hadn't gotten around to it, as the parking lot is always full. Finally managed to stop in, and was pleased I did. To those who complain the setting is "outdated", think of it as nostalgia. My husband said it reminded him of being a child, growing up in Hilo. It is basic, simple, and looks like nothing has changed, which is a huge part of the charm. The food is traditional Japanese, simple, and fresh to order. I would not go so far as to say it is outstanding, but it is, as someone else accurately stated, Japanese comfort food. This isn't a 5 star dining experience, nor does it pretend to be, but it is good food, and a wonderful way to soak in some local culture and get away from the typical tourist trap chain restaurants that are so prevalent in all of Hawaii. This is Hawaii that tourists often miss seeing, the real Hawaii.

Delicious. This is by far the best food around Kona. I got the plate Best food around Kona. There was great service and the tempura is divine. I got a teishoku set #2 which came with ahi tempura, shrimp tempura, sukiyaki beef, rice, and sunimono. It was delicious. I'm only sorry that we came on the last night of our trip. We will be back again.

Quality Japanese food. Family owned, family run. Mrs. Teshima, who is 103 years old, visited with us and the other patrons with a 5-star smile on her face. I always get the donburi, but the tempura and the ahi sometimes make an appearance on my plate by way of full children, so I can attest to the quality of these dishes, as well. Great bar, great bartender, and a large room for private parties. Reservations strongly suggested, especially on the weekends. No credit cards.

It doesn't look like much, but served the best sashimi I've ever eaten. Teshima is nothing fancy to look at, outside or in. The menu style lets you know this is more like a diner, not a fancy place. But the food is solid. Japanese food prepared by people who know what they are doing. Free sushi appetizer. The sashimi plate comes with rice, miso soup, and two kinds of fresh pickle. It'll be the catch of the day. When I went, it was ahi -- so fresh and sweet, melted like butter in my mouth. The fresh pickle was delicious. I love miso soup and loved this soup. Service was great -- very attentive. Mainlanders will consider the prices high, but they're average for the area. I definitely recommend Teshima, if you are at all a sashimi fan.

  • Roger R.

Fantastic Japanese food. Cash only. The ahi shashimi that comes with most meals is tender and flavorful but you may have trouble eating it on the mainland after having this. I recommend the deep sea trio includes raw and cooked ahi and the best shrimp tempura I've ever had.

  • Karen S.

5 stars for the sashimi and 3 stars for the lunch special (had tuna sashimi, a couple rolls which were good, and fried fish which was not very good, along with chicken teriyaki which was well marinated but very fatty.) The bf had the sashimi plate, which I thought would have a selection of fish, but only had tuna sashimi which was AWESOME but I guess i expected a variety

I couldn't check in from the restaurant due to connection challenges but I must say that the restaurant is a really cute nostalgic place. From what I got from our waitress the place is now in its 5th generation. The food was good, wasn't really special, but good. After reading and seeing its rating of 4 1/2 stars I was quite eager to eat at this place. Family owned and operated really gives that pride of ownership feel. The flavors of the food were quite simple, something that one would probably do at home except with less or non of the MSG. But then again thats the whole feel of the restaurant, the home cook feel except with out the mess of oil splashing from the tempura etc etc. It is definately not a Restaurant Suntory or even down to a Gyotaku but still good, Grandmas cooking.

Love Teshima's. Very homey atmosphere, friendly service, great food. The restaurant has been in the same building since it opened in the 40's. It shows, and that's a very good thing, a real feeling of old hawaii. The food is a mix of Island-style mix plate, and Japanese. If you're pressed you could even order a burger. The tempura is the best around, light and perfectly crisp. Order a side of shrimp tempura. Most plates come with a kim chee side, and miso soup or sashimi. Look out for Mrs. Teshima. She's over 100 years old, still comes to work, and makes eye contact and smiles with every customer that comes through the door.

Best tempura, and chicken fried rice. I always order the Seafood Trio-sashimi, sauté ahi, shrimp tempura, miso soup and pickled vegetables. Breakfast is awesome too - I love the Japanese bento! Highly recommended....this is my favorite restaurant in Kona!

  • Myrzzy T.

Teshima, your sashimi has RUINED me. Maybe it's because I've lived in Albany too long (always true) or that it's been too long since my last visit to SF (the last amazing sushi/sashimi I had before moving back to the east coast), but this was literally the freshest sashimi I have EVER had. EVER. It was soft and amazing and just melted in my mouth. Fabulous. Too bad we went here on one of the first days of our vacation in Hawaii - I thought that maybe all sashimi would be this good on the big island, but sadly, no. Don't get me wrong, the other places were great too, but no other place even compared, and now that I'm back on the east coast, there's definitely no comparison. Ugh. If you're visiting or live here and haven't been - GO. NOW.

As other reviewers describe, Teshima is serves VERY authentic/classic Japanese home style foods. My gran-ma , who passed away more than 30yrs ago, used to serve me the similar foods when I stay her home. ( I'm a Japanese-American.) The mistress of this place "Shizu-obaa-chan" is 107 yrs old and still actively working here.

Fantastic shrimp tempura. Overall very good Japanese food. Ambiance is pretty week, do not come here expecting a swank interior or fabulous service. This is a family restaurant, it is a local fixture. I eat here regularly and enjoy it.

O.M.G! On my 4th visit to Kona, found this local Japanese Restaurant thru Yelp( thank you Yelp) since I've exhausted all the other eaterys on Ali Drive we decided to try this restaurant since it has a lot of great reviews and was very close to our hotel and boy are we glad we did! Must try the "ONO" breaded Porkchops! Service is better than the Four Seasons :)

Best Japanese Restaurant on Big Island and Oahu that I've been to so far! No body can compare to their tempura batter and sauce. The miso soup is splendid and their sashimi is right off the boat. I'm sad that we ate there on our last day in Kona... but we'll defintely be going back.

This place is definitely worth the trip. A few things to note: It's a little hard to find. It's close to a gas station. The food here is amazing. You could get a meal this good at other places on the island but not at these prices. I had the miso butterfish and it was almost as good as the one you get at Roy's. The establishment is old, but to me, that's what makes it charming. Cash only. I'll definitely be back.

I love you shrimp tempura! Crispy golden deliciousness that I can't find anywhere else, grrrr. Maybe absence does make the heart grow fonder, but it is also frustrating and disappointing when its rainy on the mainland. I will be back for you!

I came to the realization when the food was set in front of me that i had never eaten TRULY authentic japanese cuisine. When I walked in there was the whole family there, and since i went right before close, i was the only customer in there. The rest of the family was eating their dinner a few tables over. I have never had Japanese relatives, but i got the feeling that if i had, id be hanging out in that restaurant all day as a second (or first) home. So I ordered the Tempura and Beef Teriyaki, which also came with miso soup. The beef teriyaki was surprisingly not rough at all (most oriental restaurants i have found use lower quality beef). It was actually very well cooked, moist, and had a delicious teriyaki sauce for dipping. I was eager to try the Miso soup as i only had it once before, and needless to say i never ordered it again. However the soup here was sensational. I added no salt or pepper as the flavor was really unique but in a good way. The tempura i read many things about on yelp, and i was hoping for the best. I was not disappointed. Tempura is one of those dishes that can be really bad, from the shrimp to the batter. This place seems to have nailed both. I wish i was here longer as i would have loved to tried their sashimi. After a long night, I left completely satisfied (that's what she said).

Teshima's definitely gets five stars. If I could hack this app and give it ten I would. Grandma Teshima came out and spoke to us after our meal. She was the sweetest thing ever. At 102, her hearing and eyesight weren't perfect, but she looked great. She spoke to all of us about our visit to Hawaii and where we were from. I wish I could steal her away she was so wonderful. Our waitess wa also a sweetheart. She was on the ball. She was super friendly and humorous but never in that annoying way. She forgot a cucumber salad on our order but she realized it before we left and brought it in a to go cup. She tried to refuse the large tip we gave her and hugged our aunt when she told her that she used to be a waitress and decided that fighting fires was easier. Besides the forgotten salad, which she fixed later, everything was perfect. She was great. I wished I could steal her away too. Now to the food: Before the meal, we got a small tuna roll compliments of grandma Teshima. It was tasty and just right to start things off. I ordered the deep sea trio which consisted of shrimp and vegetable tempura, seared ahi tuna, and tuna sashimi. It also came with sunomono, tsukemono, rice, miso soup, and green tea. The seared ahi had lime to squeeze over it and it was fantastic. The tempura was very light and fluffy ad the flavor was very good. It didn't just taste like a ball of deep fried batter. The sashimi was fresh and also very yummy. Everything was awesome. My fiancé had the chicken sukiyaki which I tasted. It was delectable. Her cousins ordered the saimin which is a ramen like dish and that was also good. It seems like just about everything there was delicious, including the mango, green tea, and coffee ice creams we had for dessert. I loved this restaurant and I would highly recommend it. Grandma Teshima is a sweetheart and you can taste the love in every bite.

For once in my life, did not plan out every single activity and meal on this vacation. We were left with looking through the trusty Big Island guide for some local eats on the Kailua Kona side of town. We had just moved to the Sheraton to get a new perspective on the Big Island. This area was less fancy compared to Waikoloa but still pretty cool. We drove up and down the Hwy several times before finally seeing this place on the opposite side of the road. We busted a u turn and park the car. Teshima is run by a family with older granny looking women, and their younger family members. The menu is simple and serves lots of different Japanese dishes such as ramen, fried rice, miso soup, tempura. Actually, those were the exact things we ordered for dinner. Haha! It seemed like it was a neighborhood eatery with lots of locals hangin out there for dinner. It kind of felt like a diner serving Japanese food. It was pretty tasty and totally hit the spot for us that night. YUM!

Something is not the same here.... Reviews are showing as good overall, but we had a variety of food at our table and everything was not that good at all. Saimin was the worst. They can't get any of the Japanese dishes right. Something fishy with these reviews. 1 star is what all 7 of agreed was fair. Oh yea, service sucks here too.

We went to Teshima's twice during our 8 day trip to Hawaii and enjoyed it both times. First, the yelp map is wrong; Teshima's is just south of where highway 11 and 180 merge, on the mauka (toward the mountain) side of the road. The first time, I had #3: miso, sashimi, sukiyaki, shrimp tempura, sunomono, tsukemono, and rice. All was quite tasty and the sashimi was firm and fresh. The second time I had the tempura combo with steak; the tempura was great and the steak was so-so. Our two year old ate a mountain of their chicken teriyaki. Friendly staff and pretty good service. Homey and a bit divey, for which I have a soft spot.

Teshima was the perfect place to reenergize after a long day of snorkeling. My tempura was spot on, perfectly crunchy and not at all greasy. My husband still talks about the fried rice omelet he ate there. Our miso soup and light pickles that accompanied our meals were fresh and lively counterpoints to our entrees. Our only regret is that we don't have a restaurant like Teshima near us on the mainland!

This is a pretty good restaurant. The atmosphere isn't great, but the food is pretty good. It came with a little cucumber salad, which was delicious. I got the vegetable tempura, which was good. Not the best I've had, but still pretty decent. DO NOT get the udon. It has some gross mystery meat.

The best thing about this place is the history! The matriarch is 102 years old!!!! She still walks around saying hi to everyone and sweeps the floors!!! AMAZING! The great granddaughters help wait the tables and the son works the kitchen! The food is delish too! Japanese home cooking! We were famished after driving the entire island and visiting the volcano park. It was 830pm and we drive by Teshima's and slam on the brakes!!! I forgot their hours so we were ready to just eat McD's since everything closes early on the island. But Teshima's was a great place to end the day!!! They were fairly busy for closing time and it took awhile to get seated, they didn't really acknowledge us as we walked in kind of snooty but whatever..... Dinner menu: Portuguese fried rice Chicken and tofu: yummy! sukiyaki style! We even got a choice of FREE tempura or sashimi because the son felt that my chicken and tofu took too long to come out! We took the tempura and it was hot and crispy! Bring cash...it is a CASH only restaurant!

Always love this spot. It reminds me of home cooking. Very comfortable and consistent. You definitely can't go wrong here, unless you forget your cash (since they don't take plastic-luckily there's an ATM there). Super yummy teriyaki, tempura is delish and the fried rice is hard to beat!

You're in authentic Hawaii here. The food is good and 4 generations of a lovely and gregarious Japanese/American family operate it. We've had conversations with the 94 year old grandmother who is a gold mine of stories about being of Japanese descent during WWII.........

When I get that old, I want to be as cool as the dude manning the register at Teshima. When it gets busy and he see's you standing there (behind his bad ass shades), he'll come out and offer you a table. He'll also promise you a waitress, but he won't promise when. Ha. This is a family run, homestyle, Japanese diner. They have all the goodies you want. The tempura was awesome. The batter was crisp, light, and flaky. The vegetables and shrimp were fresh and tasty. The miso soup was warm and soothing. The sashimi was fresh and delicious. The sautéed ahi was well-seasoned and well-cooked. I tried my old favorite, hamburger steak, and was not disappointed. The hamburger was served with delicious starchy gravy. It was crispy on the outside and tender in the middle. Loved it! This place doesn't come with bell's and whistles, but the food is extremely comforting. Its no wonder its pretty much a packed house every night. I know, because I came here several times during my trip.

When on Big Island you should not miss Teshma's Retaraunt...a wonderful mom and pop shop that offers great food at great prices.. From the street view you may miss or ignore the place..rather old and really rustic...but missing this place would be a crime...The bento, teriyaki, tempuras,....(sorry, my mouth is watering all over my keyboard) are as good as you will find...Take a page from the locals and do breakfast or lunch there...You can find great mainland dishes for kids (and you wana be kids) and for $10.00, a lunch that is sure to empress and last until dinner rolls around...Great place to stop when traveling to the valcano or Hilo...the meals at Teshimas have great staying power so you can tourist up and see all there is to see...and there is plenty of that...So say howzit to all may aunties and brudahs and enjoy some great island fare Japanesse style....you will be glad you did..

Checked this out Yelp, great posts from lots of foodies. My local friends had not ventured here yet, and were up for something new, we dropped in on Tuesday @ 7PM ish to be seated immediately in a booth along the front. Menu simple but lots of Japanese fair, great combo selections on left side of menu. Settled on small plates, sashimi (ahi) , vegetable tempura (outstanding) and miso soup, edamame complimentary. Very fresh with authentic sauce for tempura. Dinner guests ordered shrimp tempura, they loved it. Service friendly, miso soup seemed off to me, but I have been told my pallet is different. Some day I will visit Japan (maybe) Edamame would have been better served warm but I still think 4 stars is deserving, maybe 4.5 would be more deserving!

I think they are the oldest restaurant in the Keauhou area. I don't know how recently, but they now serve breakfast. Very good pancakes, and the prices are great. One thing they should change is the hash browns. It was one of those pre-made frozen patties anyone can buy from the store. But they give you choices, and hash browns is just one, so pass on it unless you like that kind. Nothing like going to well established "Local" places for good food at reasonable and low prices.

A must eat place on the Big Island! We bought bentos twice - and ate them all day long because there is so much food and so much variety (the large comes with three musubis plus spam, plus yummy fish, plus teriyaki beef, the best Japanese style eggs and tsukemono and sunomono. We also ate breakfast here - love their fried rice and then all of the breakfasts came with pancakes which we could not finish after the fried rice, the eggs and the portugese sausage. I found the service very good and friendly all three times we were here and the food calls me back.

This is a restaurant for the locals who just want food, and it has a lot of history that goes with it. As such, the restaurant is well worn, which others have complained about but I really liked. The food was delicious, though we had to wait a very long time at the door before anyone came and talked to us. We would have appreciated a "Sorry for the wait, we'll be right with you", but they were obviously dealing with extraordinary circumstances and we weren't in any real hurry, so we waited. According to some of the locals we met in line (who had been going there every week for 20 years) it was one of the first times they had to wait for a table, so it was probably just a one time deal. That's the only reason this is 4 stars. NOTE: This place is cash only, so you need to get cash before if you don't want to use their ATM + surcharge. If you do use it, make sure to double check that you got all of your money. I ended up with $20 extra because of someone at some point before me who didn't read the sign to double check (they disappeared before I could find who it was). Also, according to our new local friends Grandma Teshima passed away recently. RIP

Was a little worried as our waitress had definitely taken a bitter pill this morning. However, we were pleasantly surprised. The tempura is excellent, beef teriyaki was really good, sweet and sour spare ribs were good, new York strip was ok. Would definitely return.

Simple food, well done. I love this restaurant. It is the simplest, most straightforward place on the Island. Honest food, excellent vegetable tempura, fine bento boxes. You cannot leave this restaurant hungry. The staff from Grandma who is at least 103 to the rest of the family and all the other workers is helplful, engaged, friendly. The look of the place is the 1960's revisited. In the bar area to the right as you enter there's pretty much a standing show of grandson Jason's.

I love Grandma Teshima! Is she 106 now? Homey place with strange, yet endearing charm (feel like you're eating in a very old school cafeteria). Decor has not been updated but something about it works. My oyakodon donburi bowl was tasty. All our dinners came with miso soup, sashimi, sukiyaki, sunomono (vinegared cucumbers), tsukemono (pickled cabbage) and rice. Cash only.

Fried rice is awesome. I like it with sausage. Shrimp tempura is awesome! as if they put crack in it! It's so good! Haven't had great shrimp tempura since Yuraku Cho closed down.

The food was good...but the hype was better. I mean, it was a cool place, and has been around forever...but I wasn't overly impressed. It's an old timey hang out with decent food. Go for the ambiance!

Could it be...that I actually dined at a restaurant without having Yelped it OR B.I.-Revealed-it first? I think I had either read something in some tourist rag or saw something on one of those resort-tv channels, but honestly, all I could recall about this place prior to our coming there was a) it's been around awhile and b) grandma makes really good food. We arrived around dusk, so with that and the dim lighting, I couldn't really perceive any dinginess (or need for deep-cleaning). It's simply old. Like venerable. But simple - simply decorated, simply presented, simply divine. I perused the menu - again, very old-school, just a simple laminated gate-fold, with the prettiest cover illustration I've ever seen for a restaurant like this - and considered a local specialty, but actually went for the Teishoku #3 (again, WITHOUT Yelpie input, can you believe it??). I do not typically get tempura when I eat Japanese food - that's for my sister, who "likes crunchy things." But the other offerings of sashimi, pickled vegetables, and miso soup in the teishoku helped to tip me in that direction. The meal was beyond satisfying. I loved the vinegary sunomono. The ahi sashimi was fresh. The miso soup is soul-replenishing - no matter if it's still 80 degrees out. And the tempura is, indeed, some of the best that I've ever had. Mmm, crunchy. I was positively and absolutely stuffed to the brim after dinner, but overheard the next table of diners getting some pie, to celebrate someone's birthday. Hell, that was good enough for us! We split a slice of pumpkin pie complete with a generous dollop of ice cream. I don't know if it was homemade or not, but it was delicious. We didn't find pumpkin pie in October in Hawai'i to be strange in.the.least. It's the simple things that satisfy.

I shoulda got the tempura like "Big Island Revealed" suggested!! I had the oyakodon, which was tasty, but my eating partner's tempura was to die for!! The down-home family-style ambiance was great, and we think we got a peek at Grandma Teshima! Definitely worth the slightly out-of-the-way drive!

Had the butterfish and the #3 of the dish with the name that I cant remember. The food was pretty good however for the price ($11 - $12 +) I expected way bigger portions. so beware if you are looking for big portions. I ended having to order Portuguese fried rice which wasn't bad but I paid more for dinner than what I intended. If you are coming here - try the butterfish There wasnt too many parking spots.

If you're looking for some great grub, this is the place if you're into Japanese fare. The tempura is perfectly done, and the sauce is homemade and I've had nothing close to it. The sushi and sashimi with each bento is great. Everything is incredibly fresh and the atmosphere is quite traditional. Great for family get togethers and a great place for a great meal experience.

Delicious! I got a #3 and loved the tempura and the fresh sashimi. The place is very homey and local, and the people are extraordinarily friendly. The prices are high for the portions you get, but this place was so good, we ended up driving 1 hr down here to eat again. Yum.

We were not at all impressed. First, it took forever for the waitress to acknowledge our presence. Then, she seated the party of four standing behind us even though our party of four arrived first. Probably favoring local clientele over tourists. We would have left then but for the fact that we had two hungry kids in tow and it was getting late. After seating us, the waitress was not exactly rude but was definitely cold. The Japanese food was decent but nothing to write home about. I've had better. In particular, the tempura was room temperature and had obviously been sitting around for a while before it was served. Portions were very small and prices were high. This place gave me the creeps. An acquaintance who grew up in Hawaii told us she could not wait to get off the rock when she was a teenager. She could not bear the stifling, provincial atmosphere. For tourists, Hawaii is like a slice of paradise, but some who grow up on the island have a different perspective. Sitting at a table at Teshima, I could see why our acquaintance left Hawaii first chance she got and lived in New York City for many years.

The BEST fried shrimp tempura I've ever had!! It's not your average tempura batter.... It's light and extra crisp and i think it's got panko breadcrumbs on it.... sweet perfection! I had dinner #3 which also came with ahi sashimi, beef sukiyaki, miso soup and a couple sides. Everything was delicious! It's a locals favorite as we seemed to be the only tourists there and it was packed. The service was excellent. Wish they had one in Southern Cali. We would definitely come back!

Teshima's is a place of nostalgia for me. Given that, I go everytime I'm home with my family. Everyone orders the same thing. For me Chicken Sukiyaki in the kettle is soooo ono. Just thinking about it is giving me a craving.

Find ROACH, get pushed out of the restaurant. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Roach right in the middle of the omlet. So, "stuff" happens. We didn't ask for anything other than telling them we won't be finishing the omlet dish. What happened next is mind-boggling. A big explanation by a lady owner/manager (not the senior lady you see in fellow yelper's pics) of how she has gone to chinese restaraunts (funny, this is a japanese restaurant) and experienced roaches before. Then a favor of how we won't be charged for the dish. Then a half hearted "sorry" and the bill, which we did not ask for yet, delivered immediately to us. AVOID.

While on vacation in Kona, we visited the Teshima Restaurant. A total blast from the past. Reminds me of some buildings long gone on Oahu when I was younger. A true plantation style, old Hawaii feel to it. And it isn't just the atmosphere, but also with the service! The service was very friendly and genuinely humble. You could tell this family took pride in their restaurant. We got free cake that night as it was Grandma Teshima's 105th birthday. What a wonderful story to see a woman start a business in 1929 that turned into a restaurant in the 40's and it's still going strong in the same building! She is also still running the restaurant at that age! I ordered the combination of shrimp tempura, sashimi and sukiyaki. It came with rice and miso soup with a wonderful nutty green tea. The sashimi was fresh and I gobbled it down. Shrimp tempura was crispy and light with some eggplant and kabocha pumpkin. The soup was a sweeter white miso, which was good but I prefer aka miso. Fire Ant got the chicken teriyaka and shrimp tempura which he enjoyed and said it was close to the one he loves in Okinawa! Loved the prices too! They also sold candies, cookies and that wonderful tea they serve. I bought some tea to bring home. Limited parking in the front but it was a wonderful experience!

This place is ok. There is really no competitions nearby. The best part was the tuna sashimi. Only the best sushi places in LA could have more fresh fish. The texture is like a good mochi. It's firm yet stick to your tongue not slimy and chewy. Tempura had a light and crispy batter yet oily tasting. I couldn't eat all of them. The fish was firm, not my favorite texture on the fried fish. The omelette fried rice was just ok. Nothing special. The food tasted like home made and honest but it was just a ok.

This place is a must every time I come home to visit. If I don't come here before I leave the island, I'm not a happy camper. I always get the #3. It comes with a bowl of rice, miso soup, shrimp/vegetable tempura, tsukiyaki, sashimi. It's amazing. Love this place

I'm a fan of Teshimas but it is because I'm from here and I know that they are legit and it's a good local restaurant. But, don't come here if you are looking for fancy stuff. I love going to Teshimas but only gave it 3 stars because of the portion size and service. I wish my server asked me if I wanted another glass of wine or even asked me if I wanted my first glass. I had to ask for the beer and wine list.

Teshimas is great and consistent every time! The culture of the staff is warm which results in a very positive vibe. I recommend stopping in for dinner to everyone I send to South Kona for a day trip. I get the seafood trio and love it. Teshimas is a must do when visiting the big island.

You must eat here if you come to Big I. Food is LEGIT! Oyako donburi, kona beef stew, lunch special number 1, vegetable tempura. All were amazing and delicious. Their tempura is light and crunchy. I am an absolute fan of oyako donburi (chicken in sweet broth over rice with an egg on top). The one here was perfectly done. The food portions are pretty large for Japanese food- I was definitely stuffed. We also tried their pie (could not resist). The pumpkin pie was delectable and the custard pie was eggy with perfect crust. Pretty darned good for being served in a J-food restaurant. This little place is a gem- a definite MUST. Yummilicious Factor = A+

Best Japanese comfort food in Kona!! This is one heck of a reward for being in the neighborhood early enough for breakfast!! Even better is their Japanese breakfast teishoku (set) is less than $10. My favorite part was the wrapped package of nori, tsukemono and egg. I don't usually eat seafood for breakfast especially the oily kind but the fried fish was very satisfying with just the right amount of salty. I would make an extra effort to be in the area just to get this simple yet tasty Japanese breakfast.

Great quality of food! You know it is good when you are sitting in a room full of locals. It's places like this that make me love Yelp! I had a perfectly cooked steak with an amazing shrimp tempura. However, my favorite thing was their homemade tea, it was so nutty and earthy. Wow!

Awesome omelet fried rice!!! Delicious miso butterfish and traditional udon broth. Old decor but brings back memories of the small noodle shops in Tokyo. Great friendly service. A definite must-go when in Kona.

I can't say enough good things about Teshima's! We were staying nearby, but in 8 days my family and I ate here 5 times. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, all are totally worth it. Is it weird that one of the best pancake's I've ever had was at a Japanese restaurant? The breakfast here is ridiculous! For $6.75 you get an enormous amount of delicious food. Eggs, meat, pancake, toast/fried rice? All perfectly cooked? Yes, please. If you want to drop an extra dollar you can also get the Japanese breakfast with fried fish, miso soup, tsukemono, tsunomono, fish cake, and sticky rice with fish flakes. So, sooooo good! The breakfasts also come with coffee/tea. For less than $7/$8 dollars, it can't be beat. Lunch and dinner are equally delicious. I had the shrimp tempura (their specialty) and also had the beef teriyaki. Both were delicious. The fresh ahi sashimi is excellent, as are the various noodle bowls. I saw some people knocking the service in other reviews, and our experience couldn't have been farther from that. The servers were all personable and friendly and remembered us starting with the second time we came back. I also saw some people mention it being pricey. I already mentioned the low breakfast price, but dinners ran between $12 - $20. I didn't feel cheated at all on portions, though, so I don't think those are unreasonable. The inside of the restaurant isn't fancy at all, but it's not a hole-in-the-wall either. If you're still on the fence, the last night we ate there they had a line out the door. That's not uncommon, but everyone in line was a local. They were people we'd talked to at various shops throughout the week, so if they eat there it must be a good sign. There's a reason this place has been here since the '40s. Another absolute must if you're in Kona and want to get away from the tourists. It's cash only, so bring that, but you'll be glad you made the stop!

I live in San Diego county, where Convoy Street is well-known for its amazing Asian restaurants. When I first heard about Teshima, I wasn't expecting anything out of the ordinary. Same ol', same ol'. Boy, was I wrong! The meals are a bit pricey ($15-20 range for dinner), but it's gooood food! My husband and I left Teshima feeling comfortably full and very satisfied with our dining experience. If you have the chance, learn more about the history of this establishment, as it seems to be very interesting! We watched portions of a video that ran in the background, which talked about the owner and what she accomplished in her 100+ years of life.

Surprisingly good. When you walk in, it doesn't look like much, just an old fashioned diner - Japanese style. Service was friendly and attentive. The sashimi dinner was fresh, simple, and yummy :) Definitely a humble and homey place to eat.

Was recommended by several ppl on yelp via Yelp Thread .. i asked where should i go eat and a few ppl mentioned Teshima for japanese food. good service average food terriyaki beef is not the same as the teriyaki beef i have in CA...it seemed more like bulgogi but with thicker cuts of beef. miso soup was not good, too powdery - i had to keep clearing my throat after each time i take a sip of soup. they give each table complimentary sushi - actually it was more like kimbap. My friend's omlette fried rice was pretty good - big portion too. I think yelp hyped this place up for me.. the food was just okay in my opinion. But the people there are friendly and attentive though!

The shrimp tempura is just as described!!! Light, crispy...reminds me of the way our Japanese neighbor used to make tempura...but I could only eat two before I felt it was really oily..... The tei shoku was ok...sukiyaki...so so....sashimi was fresh...Miso butterfish didn't have enough miso flavor, the way I like it...Miso soup was luke warm.... I'd go back for the tempura....very cute local place....nice people.

Yelp Challenge 365 #74/375 The reason I am giving Teshima Restaurant 5 stars is because the owner, the Teshima family and the icon and matriarch of the family and restaurant is Mrs. (Grandma) Teshima. Grandma Teshima is $100+ years old. She goes in to work daily and she claims that is what keeps her going. Looking at her, you might guess she was in her 80's; certainly not 100+/ Grandma Teshima greets her patrons with a smile and a "how are you?" Soft spoken, she will always ask " if everything is alright? Can I get you anything, etc/? The decor is the same as 30 years ago. But why change it if its not broken? The sign out front has to date back some time as well. I remember the same sign as child getting to dine there with my family. YIKEs! The food? I will always order the fresh fish. Why? Because It is FRESH. Probably caught that morning and delivered to the restaurant by the local fishermen/fisherwomen. Prices are circa 1980. Its a place to go for good food, meet Grandma Teshima, for a great price and you wil leave content. This is the ONLY restaurant I know of that is owned by the same person, the same family for clearly almost 100 years! One problem? If you're in Kailua Kona (or Makai Kona) it will be a drive for you to get there. Teshima's is located in Kainaliu which is considered Mauka Kona (about 35-40 minute drive from the Keahole Airport.) Believe me! If you have the time; it's worth the drive.

After full days of hiking and being beaten down by the sun, Teshima's was a perfect spot for a comforting, low-key dinner. I don't remember all the things that came with our order, but we inhaled everything and felt take care of by our server, who even politely explained how to eat what we ordered. It's a family-run joint with a long history in this community, and many of the customers are locals. The wall art is a mix of family photos and sweet tributes to a longtime owner who just passed away. A must-do for anyone passing through Kealakekua.

We last visited the Big Island ten years ago. At that time, we searched out local diners that featured traditional home cooking. Our friends recommended Teshima Restaurant and Manago Hotel. Both places are prototypical of local island food (not cuisine). Both serve plain ol good food that doesn't cost much but has the aji/flavor of local island and japanese dishes that people growing up in Hawaii enjoyed. Teshima is not the only Japanese restaurant on the Big Island but it is one of the best in the niche of old school traditional Japanese restaurant featuring dishes like tonkatsu, tempura, sukiyaki, teriyaki and sashimi. Mrs. Teshima is 104 and still greets customers and now and then serves her makisushi. Teshima is not asian fusion. It is not Roy's. It is Japanese comfort food. IT IS NOT spider roll, rainbow roll and not that junk kinda roll that you see in most Japanese sushi restaurants on the mainland.

Hmm..pretty torn on this one. I'll break it down as follows Food:4 stars. Had the oyako donburi which was good but too much rice- please just charge a little more. The miso soup was a little on the weak side but i like it strong and my friend who doesn't normally like miso thought it was good, sunomono and tsukenono were both really good. The sashimi was really good as well. My friend had the beef teriyaki and tempura. The beef Teri was soft and flavorful but the tempura was super good. The shrimp was huge and the batter they use is awesome but a little oily. If I were just ranking the tempura it would be 5 stars easy. Ambiance: 2 stars. It would rank 3 but the cushions were so worn and tired. Then again I should lose some weight. Service: 1 star. So sad. One refill during dinner, staff standing around talking story. Such disinterested wait help. Total 3 stars. Mrs. Teshima was a good friend to my Grandmother and I wanted to rate higher cause she is such an awesome person but unfortunately the wait staff failed bad. Hopefully your experience is better or maybe just a bad day?

Really, this is as good as it gets for real Japanese-Hawaiian of yesteryear. The original store F. Teshima was founded in 1929 and the same family runs the restaurant today, Mary no longer works there @ 107 years old, but the family has taken up the job and do a wonderful job. What to get, well you won't go wrong ordering whatever the special of the day is and the amount will not leave you hungry. The Miso soup is the best I have ever had, and that beats some extremely high-end Japanese restaurants. Sashimi, tempura, and teriyaki beef will also delight. The lunch specials are a tremendous bargain for the quality and quantity @ about $12.75. The service is also terrific, if you get Nichole, one of the Great-grand daughters, then you are indeed fortunate as she is caring and helpful, a wonderful person that will brighten up your meal. All of this set in the historic, but clean, slice of Old Hawaii. Run, don't walk and don't be put off if you have a slight wait as the locals keep Teshim's full most days, even during the Tropical Storm today...

A friend suggested I check this place out...so I did. I saw a pic of Grandma Teshima in the photo section and thought...hm...maybe I could meet her too. When we asked if she's working they said she wasn't. But if we wanted to visit her we could! Apparently she lives in the house behind the restaurant. It was such a great honor to meet Grandma Teshima. She is 104, as of now, and walks and talks great! Amazing...absolutely amazing. The food? I ordered the nabeyaki udon, which had a very nostalgic/local flavor to it. I enjoyed it, but I think it gave me a small stomach ache after. I felt like throwing up...but kept it down. *whew* Yelp 365 Challenge #146/365

The best fried rice around. Love their shrimp tempura. A great, basic local breakfast for under $8. That is more than enough for me to keep going back. And I admit, I love the local, laid back atmosphere. You can keep your high end restaurant; give me good food and a relaxing place to eat and I am happy! They recently added accepting credit cards for payment...no more cash only! Score!

It's hard to find much to add that hasn't already been said. Really cute local restaurant. The folks who work there are super friendly. This is "old-fashioned" Japanese food. The tempura was awesome - light and crunchy - now I'll be very reluctant to eat the standard breaded stuff I get back home. The teriyaki was subtle & delicious - not that sweet sticky stuff you find most other places. I only deduct a star for two reasons: (1) menu selection (especially of healthier/lighter items) is a bit limited and (2) f I give only 4 stars, your expectations will be in check and you'll be thrilled when you go there. :)

Being a born and raised Kona family, Teshima's is hands down our favorite restaurant on the Big Island. Everything from the smiling faces all around, the feeling of home as soon as you walk thru the door, the generations of family that operate the restaurant, to the amazing homestyle cooking that never, ever disappoints...I've never had a bad meal here. Breakfast lunch & dinner, it is always consistent. I've been coming here for years...Teshima's is a landmark in Kona, and where the locals come to eat. The staff is mostly all family and you can feel the love that surrounds this restaurant. The best restaurant in Kona for sure.

Great place, tasty food. A little on the pricy side in my opinion but worth it for quality and good service. Went as a group of 4 and everyone left happy!

Great homey down to earth place that has been a fixture for ages. After a long day of hiking, the perfect way to end the day. Friendly service, great local vibe and topped off with a Taiko drumming practice next door! The deep sea trio was a tasty good sized meal, leaving little room for ice cream. The highlight was the miso black cod-it was heavenly. Usually it is over seasoned and too salty in other eateries, but at Teshima's it was perfectly balanced and melted in your mouth. A definite destination the next time we stay at Manago.

Small, family style and excellent food that's not overpriced... Loved the sashimi!

This place appears to be a locals' place. Hole in the wall, and as with most (or all) hole in the walls, you can certainly expect some uninvited dinner guests at your table. And do also keep in mind that you are in Hawaii. If you can look past this and enjoy this restaurant for what it is, that is a local restaurant that's serves up amazing, reasonably priced food with great hospitality, then you will have a great dining experience. The servers and staff were extremely friendly and full of the aloha spirit, almost too friendly. The food was delicious, sashimi was indeed FRESH. There were not complaints from our table. Ahi sashimi, panko shrimp, chicken tofu kettle, beef tofu kettle, NY steak (I didn't order this, my friend did, don't ask me what compelled him), dinner combo, udon, and the special of the day (*drool*) miso butterfish.

After all the Hawaiian food and bar & grill, we decide to go for Japanese food. Went to Teshima for lunch on Sunday (Nov 4, 2012). 4 stars for miso butterfish (black cod). Good miso flavor and cooked just right. 3.5 stars for the beef, vegetable tempura and sashima lunch. Beef was a little too sweet for our taste and can't taste the beef. Tempura was not bad and the sashimi (tuna) was very fresh. Overall it was good and friendly people too.

This was our first meal on our honeymoon trip to the Big Island, and it was a pretty solid start. It's clear from sitting there for an hour that they have a strong following and are a key part of the community. The service was perfectly fine, but perhaps a little dispassionate. The food was really quite good, whether it was have the tempura, sashimi, or terayaki. They started us off with a garlicky edamame, which was new to me, but delicious. The fish was very fresh, tempura was light and had the perfect texture, and the terayaki was super tasty. It was cash only, so stock up before you go.

We ended up eating here twice during our week in Kona. This place was built in 1940 and is right next to a beautiful Zen temple. It's a family business, which I love to support. The food was good and authentic (I'm a major Japanese food fan). The prices were reasonable and the service was good. I recommend the Beef Teriyaki and Tempura Dinner, you will not be disappointed.

Shrimp Tempura. I noted that this place has the best that I've ever had state side (I've never been to the motherland, so that disclaimer is out of the way). Flaky and crispy batter, just the right size, and the light dipping sauce. Add to that fresh Big Island sashimi and you've got winners. You know that when someone tells you their story of how they got off the plane, got their car rental, and then headed straight to their destination, it was someplace important. This is exactly what we did even through a out of character terenchal Kona downpour. They also have home made chocolate mousse which, to me, was more like a chocolate frosting. Chocoholics will love it. There was also a coconut mac nut ice cream made by a Hilo company that was pretty good as well. The food is what everyone wants to know about here, but if you're interested, Teshima's is almost completely a family run organization. Mrs. Teshima, all of 104-ish years old, still comes into work from time to time counting out the day's till and telling her grandson that he needs to sell more. The great grandchildren work there. The uncle works the bar and yet another works the cash register. There's probably much more to the story, but I'll stop right there. Establishment's with a story are a joy to visit. It means that they've been there and done that. My mom talked to the Grandson (the reluctant current manager) of Mrs. Teshima for a bit and it was nice to get to know the people behind the story. Additionally, as I was buying my Teshima's t-shirt we chatted with the uncle at the bar. He was a nice fellow who has his art hanging all around the restaurant. Just so you know we also love the Teshima coffee that sold here. As you know, Kona is ground zero for the coffee world in the Pacific Ocean and there are bazillions (well, one vendor told us 700-800 individuals growing coffee in the Kona area) of coffee growers. The Teshima's label is also cultivated and roasted by a Teshima family member. We bought several to bring back to Oahu. It's located a bit South of Kona right off of the highway and should have ample parking. Cash only.

This is a locals place. Everyone is very friendly. The tempura was the best thing we had, the batter was delicious and it was fried to perfection. The tempura sauce however, was on the sweeter side but still tasty. I also thought the sukiyaki was a bit on the sweeter side but it was still good. The sashimi was fresh and that's always a plus. My boyfriend got the japanese beef stew and it was a bit bland. It was fun to check out a place that was away from the touristy spots.

I wished we had gone to Teshima's more than once during our trip. It had the best Japanese homestyle food I have had in a long time. We went for lunch, and I got the misoyaki butterfish. It was delicious. It was served in a set with rice, pickles and miso soup. I also ordered a side of the freshest most melt in your mouth tuna sashimi. It was better than any other high end sushi place I had been to in Hawaii. My husband got the teishoku set which came with the aforementioned delectable sashimi, tempura, sukiyaki beef, rice, and pickles. He really enjoyed it. Everything was prepared very well, with care, and the prices are reasonable. It was a fantastic meal and definitely will return when we go back to the Big Island one day!

I have just been back from my Spring break holiday in the Big Island of Hawaii and I have to thank the fellow Yelpers and Yelp for the review of this place. Yelp is the reason I first went to try the food here at Teshima Restaurant and I went back again and again during my stay. I even called and stopped by to pick up the lunch bento set to bring it to eat on the airplane on my way back! Teshima is the best Japanese restaurant on the Big Island. Period! At first night, I tried the signature dinner set with tempura, sukiyaki and sashimi with all the condiments. The tempura is one of the best I have ever tasted outside of Japan - perfectly cooked! Sashimi is fresh. Sukiyaki is tasteful. That was one of the best meals on the Big Island for me. Then, I went back again for the second night to try the panko shrimp set dinner and I was not disappointed. The shrimps were crispy and delicious. This is also a must-try. (This set is not on the original menu but was written on the board in front of the restaurant, you may have to check with the server to see if it is available or not.) On my last day, I called in advance and came in 30 minutes later to pick up the lunch bento set to-go, planning to have it on the plane. The set can pass through the airport security without any problem as the restaurant packed it nicely in a good container with a chopstick and napkin intact. Once airborne, while other passengers have to order a food on the plane, I enjoyed a well-prepared bento with 2 rice balls, tasteful teriyaki, freshly fried fish, and delicious Japanese rolled omelet. The smell of the food was so good that it distracted other passengers... I have one last note before ending my review. The restaurant only accept cash so you'd better have some cash at hand.

I LOVE TESHIMA AND THE TESHIMA'S LOVE ME! R.I.P Aunty Fumi, I know I'll always be your favorite ;P So I'm not in Hawaii anymore but woke up this morning feeling ill and homesick. Right now I feel the only cure to both my disappointments is a Portuguese sausage omelet with miso soup!!!!! If you're from the Big Island you know what I'm talking about. If you're visiting the island and want a taste of real just-like-home but better-than-what-Mom-can-do breakfast, or lunch, or dinner, please go to Teshimas. Mrs. Teshima herself who is a walking 100 year old and something is usually wandering around the restaurant at dinner time, she always stops by our table to talk to my Papa :) This is and will ALWAYS be our family restaurant. I've been going here since I was a baby and everyone knows my name, and also my Dads, my little brothers' and sisters. And they all love the Deep Sea Trio! This place is real Japanese food Hawaii style and they offer dishes that not many other "traditional" claiming Japanese make. Some of these favorites of mine are: sukiyaki, miso butterfish, fried ahi, hamburger steak...ok yea hamburger steak is not "traditional" but its a tradition in Hawaii and I said this place is Japanese food with aloha favor. And as I mentioned earlier, rest in peace Aunty Fumi. She was such a wonderful woman, so happy, always. If you look around there is a piece of artwork over my favorite family table of 1,000 colorful cranes folded and dedicated to her beautiful life. *Tear. Her family is still around so its like shes still around. Love and miss everyone at Teshimas!!!! Only note for tourists is be careful when parking and pulling out of the parking lot, the road's right there!

I LOVE TESHIMA's... no one makes shrimp tempura THIS GOOD (outside of Japan)! Just read everyone's review... enough said. Mahalos Teshima Ohana for your amazing yummy-ness, I wish I was able to visit Kona side more often. What I LOVE is Teshima's 100% Kona Coffee Whole Bean. At $13/bag (or something like that) it's such super rich pure coffee goodness. Cultivated and roasted by a Teshima family member. Just call up the store and ask them about purchasing and shipping them to you if you're not in Kona.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH! I've been here ONCE almost 6 years ago and i STILL want to go back for their lacy yummy shrimp tempura! I DO have family and friends that live all over that island so there is no excuse for my absence from this restaurant over the years. I shall make a point to visit this joint by the end of the year. Mom & Pops are my favorite and this old school restaurant would be on my top 5!

just wanted to make a very important correction to a recent entry-----grandma teshima is still (((((((( very much alive))))))))) at 104 years young! although she does not frequent the dining room as much as in the past, she does reside in the 2-storey house behind the restaurant. she just loves visitors, who are welcome to climb the stairway to her living room for a chat. oh, and the restaurant is located just south of the 114 mile marker on route 11, mauka (mountain) side of road. many have gotten lost using the yelp maps.

I do not try to miss dinners at Teshima's when I'm in town for work. The Japanese food is done better here. It's Mama's cooking. I feel like Mrs. Teshima and all her 100+ years cooked all the dishes, even though I see her cruising at a table next to us and greeting the customers, checking with each of them to make sure their meals are satisfactory. When they brought out my udon, I almost teared up because I knew the next 20 minutes would be joyous for my palate. I've also tried their sashimi platter, oyako donburi, tempura-- try to venture out to different dishes each time, and every time, you leave so fulfilled.

The food is delicious and reasonably priced with huge portions. I had the saimin and the husband had beef in a kettle, which sounds weird, but was very good - kind of sweet but still savory. The service was also excellent. Plus, it has this old Hawaii dive feel. It's definitely not dressed up and glittery for tourists, which I think makes it even better.

When in Kona, I eat breakfast here. Don't eat here too late in the morning because the tour buses will stop here. I can ask the restaurant to prepare a lunch (bento box) while I take in da kine breakfast so good it break da mouth ( it's very good). Great place to start the day and figure out your sight-seeing plans.

Very good Japanese food. Tempura was great. Not much sushi, only Maguro. On this occasion the restaurant was very full and we had to sit the the very back by the bar. Not a great seating experience for me, so I'll need to go back for a better experience. I'll post an updated review.

I'd say a slice of Americana and it is but this is Japanese American in Hawaii. I would call it Japanese comfort food of very good quality. On the wall is a plaque 'established in 1926' and this is backed by a wonderful lady saying hello to people (Mary Shizuko) who is 102 years old. She says she still likes to work but feels that she doesn't move as fast and doesn't want to get in the way. It's worth a visit just to say hello to her. The food stands alone though ... Nothing pretentious, just good. Ahi sashimi was very fresh and the tempura was light and crisp. This is the kind of place that feels like home; even if home is far away.

Excellent choice for a Japanese fix. Would definitely go out of my way to drop in here for lunch or dinner. The tempura is awesome....light and crunchy. The teriyaki is delicious as are the fish items on the menu. Leave some room for the green tea ice cream. The ambiance is old school Hawaiin and makes it feel like you are eating at a diner from yrs. past. Thanks grandma for starting up this place yrs. ago and may you live many more happy years.

I grew up on the big island, and have eaten at Teshimas many times, and have never been disappointed. Just came back for a vacation after years away, and went to Teshimas for breakfast, and it was just as good! I had fried rice with two eggs and Portuguese sausage. Best fried rice I've had on this trip, and I've been eating a lot if fried rice!! It also came with a hot cake that was light and fluffy - perfect! My bf ordered two eggs with a hamburger patty and gravy, and he practically licked the plate clean! His came with a hot cake, too. Worth checking out. Wish I had time to come back for their shrimp tempura.

Love Teshima's. It's the best local Japanese food by local Japanese around Kailua Kona. If you want Japanese food for people from Japan go to Yokohama Bistro, but I prefer Teshima's. I ordered the butterfish but forgot to mention I wanted it misoyaki style and got it fried. I wasn't disappointed. It was so good. They're tempura is the bestest!

This place has become a regular destination for me and my family when we're in town visiting relatives. It's down-home, local, fresh and affordable (no kama'aina rates necessary). Great bento box style plates with fresh ahi tuna sashimi combined with other yummy choices. This is high-quality and reasonably priced Japanese food that keeps us coming back every time.

Based on Yelp and my FrommersHawaii Guidebook we thought we would be in for a treat. After a morning of kayaking and snorkeling at Kealakekua we stopped in for lunch. My husband ordered chicken catsu (the waiter recommended it as the daily lunch special) My husband did not realize it would be chicken strips with catsup. Is that really a Japanese dish? I would suggest the chicken catsu for a child. I also asked the waiter (who by the way was a nice waiter) for a recommendation. I got a lightly breaded white fish on a bed of brown edged cabbage that was food but not yummy, old tasting miso soup, tablespoon of cucumber salad that was also so-so, rice, over brown sauced noodle dish, and the best part of the meal that was actually delicious was a generous portion of sashimi. The presentation of my meal on a square platter was very lovely but the taste was just not there except for the sashimi. We were surprised at the end of the meal when they did not accept credit cards. We were abruptly informed that there is an ATM at the entrance. Needless to say but we deducted the ATM charges from the tip. They probably have a sign that says cash only but it should be more obvious.

After being in the islands for two weeks hitting all my fav spots like Rainbow, Da Kitchen, Side Street, Waiola, it was time to lay off the K-chicken and revert back to what the islands offer the best. Fresh fish sashima or simple Japanese style rather than all the fancy schmancy asian-fusion or katsu dis or dat. Teshima's will cure all of that as well as the Manago Hotel. First night had the ahi sashimi which was super fresh simply served with miso soup, rice and salad. Second night had teishoku with sashimi, beef sukiyaki and grilled ahi. Simply refreshing and ono. Reminded me of Mom's and Gramma's cooking.

Based on the reviews, I dragged my family of four on a forty minute car ride to try it out. Luckily, we love the understated Japanese breakfast -- fish, miso, rice and some tsukemono. The other stuff on the breakfast menu was typical diner fare. We also got some lunch there. I would suggest order the daily special or getting something off the Japanese side of the menu. The front/Western side was disappointing. This is no fine dining experience. The cuts of meat, be it chicken, beef or pork, were cheap and fatty. The servings are well proportioned, but not cheap. We adored the family vibe of the staff and cultural history that pervades the atmosphere.

the tempura itself deserves 5 stars but everything else was just ok. get the tempura! stop by this place on your way back up from the volcano or after snorkeling in the place of refuge (off 160, have no idea how to spell it). totally lived up to previous reviews - that place has never been remodeled (and probably deserves and deep cleaning). if you're hoping for a grandma teshima sighting, she usually shows up during lunch hours and some time in the evening but always around for closing.

The concierge at our hotel recommended Teshima's as a place locals liked to eat and suggested the tempura. Since my husband loves Japanese food and I enjoy tempura, we decided to drive up from Kailua-Kona to have dinner. It was a short distance inland and is somewhat inconspicuous, we actually missed it the first time we drove by. We were seated immediately and looked over the menu - many tasty choices from typical Japanese fare but also there were some strange items like hamburgers on the menu as well, probably to satisfy children of tourists (besides, who goes to a Japanese restaurant to eat a burger?). I ordered the shrimp tempura and my husband ordered a combination with sashimi, tempura and sukiyaki, etc. as well as some cold sake. The sake was nothing special but the food... it was amazing. The tempura was very light as was the sashimi, it melts in your mouth. The miso soup served with our meals was quite good as well. All around, we were very impressed with the food served here. As we were finishing our meal, Mrs. Teshima herself came by and asked if we were enjoying the food (the concierge told us she is 103 years old)! Our bill was approximately $45 for the two of us, very reasonable pricing. This restaurant is one of Kona's treasures and I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a good, authentic Japanese dining experience.

Wonderful food. I like the curry. The Teshima omelet fried rice also seems to be popular, but I still liked the curry better. Great service. Casual dining. Gets pretty busy, so beware.

I loved this restaurant. We came here once, but they were closed, and yes, like idiots, we didn't check the hours. So we came back again, and we were 15 minutes shy of them being closed. The great grandson told us that they were closed, but the great grandmother pulled us in and insisted on us sitting down. She gave us menus and waters. The granddaughter told us that we could order our food to go, which was fine with us because we were FAMISHED after our morning of snorkeling. I quickly ordered teishoku No. 2 for $15.25 which had miso soup, sashimi, sukiyaki, fried fish, sunomono, tsukemono, and rice. My boyfriend ordered the same because he was too hungry to even make a decision from the list of options. Then, the great grandmother brought us tea and water, and poured our soy sauce for us, which I guess, meant that we were allowed to eat there. We thanked everyone tremendously for their hospitality. When the food came out, I was in love immediately. The ahi sashimi was extremely fresh. The fried fish was very tasty, and not overly greasy. The sunomono was cut lovingly, with the core removed (no seeds), so the presentation was in the typical Japanese fashion, aesthetically pleasing. (I was taught this early on in my childhood, as I am half Japanese.) Everything was so delicious and the family was so kind. The interior reminded me of my grandmother's place, which doesn't make sense because it doesn't look like my grandmother's house, but it just had the feel of warmth and old Japanese heritage. I felt like I was finally getting into touch with my roots. The food was truly superb and I highly recommend this restaurant!

I really enjoyed all of the food we had here. The ambiance is pretty trippy - it is a throwback to another era, and probably hasn't been updated in 40 years. I was a big fan of the veggie tempura, and the sashimi is really really generous, especially if you are used to San Francisco proportions, as I am. Highly recommended if you find yourself in Kealakekua.

Simply the best place to eat on the big island. Friendly staff, great service and awesome food no matter what time of day. Try the portugese sausage for breakfast, fried ahi for lunch and don't miss the tempura for dinner!

We went to this restaurant because our friends had mentioned wanting to try it out. We went there on a Saturday evening. We were seated quite quickly in this extremely casual dining area. The menu was reasonable, including a variety of items from sashimi, rolls, udon, etc. As a bonus, our entrees included california rolls gratis as well as a few pieces of tuna sashimi. What a pleasant surprise. The wait staff weren't particularly friendly but that did not impact our dining experience. The food was ok. It's worth stopping at if you are on the west side of the Big Island and you're hungry.
