Health nuts stay away from this place. I promise you will NOT have a good time. Do us all a favor and just keep driving if you're on the Kona side. Sandy's IS NOT for those who want to diet, unless that diet is a diet soda. This is a place for those who want a classic taste of Hawai'i's hometown comfort foods and aren't counting carbs or calories because THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT GOOD! This local dive is an excellent example of the result of the melting and blending of Hawai'i's cultures and a smorgasbord of "comforting" eats. Sandy's is a blend of the old and new Hawai'i. It's menu, while common across the island chain, showcases the best (and worst, depending how you look at it) of what "Hawaiian" comfort food is and will continue to be. It's famous teriyaki beef and shrimp tempura combo is awesome. As is Sandy's Bulgogi Fries. Yes. Bulgogi. Korean style beef (which is actually their teriyaki meat), placed atop a mound of extra extra crispy crinkle-cut fries, sprinkled with green onions, and finished with a drizzle of their spicy mayonnaise-based sauce. Which brings me to my next point. The food is for comfort. COMFORT. It's also for if you're going to work the fields maintaining/picking/processing coffee. It is not, in any way that healthy for you. While that sounds like a bad thing, IT'S NOT! We have enough "healthy" options for dining don't you think yelp? If you need an example of what I mean...look above. Bulgogi fries. Beef Teriyaki. Shrimp Tempura. Katsu. Curry. Fried anything. That's pretty much what you will have to expect when you dine here. Don't expect anything more. Lastly, I am happy that a place Sandy's exists at least somewhere on the Hawaiian Island chain. We NEED these places to stay open! So what if they don't promote health. Scratch that. Sandy's does promote health. It keeps the SOUL healthy. The SOUL. We need that sometimes.

For an inexpensive plate lunch, Sandy's is a pretty good choice off the Mamalahoa highway south. We went with the 2 specials of the day, the beef stew & the sweet & sour pork ribs. Both come with chunks of vegetables and scoops of white rice & potato-mac salad. My son went with the Bento Box lunch with Teriyaki Beef, Chicken Wings & a Fried Ahi Filet over rice. It was a pretty quiet lunch with not a spoken word as we stuffed our faces. And what evil genius created the Bulgogi Fries?! It's an unholy union like a Reese's peanut butter cup or Penn & Teller. Start with nothing-to-write-home-about crinkle-cut french fries, but then jazz it up with pieces of beef bulgogi drizzled with spicy mayonnaise and scallions. It's diabolical, I tell ya!! It could be a meal unto itself or a means to take over the world!

On the road again........and this time my adventures find me in the Kailua-Kona & Kealakekua area today. I was hoping to drop by at one of my favorite restaurants (Sam Choys) in the Keauhou shopping center for lunch today, but sometimes things don't go the way you wish, so you just gotta go wid' da flow..........sigh. So I ended up just hangin' around in the Kealakekua area. It was 12:30 PM already, and I hadn't had anything to eat since I got up at 4:30 AM. Thank goodness for the free coffee in the Hawaiian Airlines lounge, otherwise I guess I would just be eating air! I was so hungry, yet I was kinda disappointed because I knew I couldn't make it to Sams. So driving around in the Kealakekua area, and I found myself at Sandy's Drive In. Sandy's is a local style plate lunch place. They have a very small menu, and I noticed a lot of the items were of the "fried" nature. Hey man...........if you're looking for something healthy, then don't bother to step into this place, cuz when you throw down a "fried" plate lunch of something........you know you'll be pickin' up some calories! I don't know about you folks, but when you are so hungry..........when you finally get to eat, normally no matter how crappy the food is, it taste GREAT!!!! But in my case............it was kinda bleh! :( For my lunch today, I ordered a two item combo plate ($9.32 with tax), and my two item combo plate consisted of the following item - 1. Fried Chicken 2. Teri Beef 3. Brown Rice 4. Toss Salad. Yes, they serve regular white rice, but I like brown rice. And yes, they do serve mac salad, but you know me..........I just hate mayonnaise, so toss salad is a given for me. About the grub..........well, the fried chicken was little wing & drumettes. The fried chicken was very dry & over cooked, meat was kinda on the hard side, and it was kinda bland tasting. But of course since they are serving little wings & drumettes, I guess it could be easily over cooked. The teri beef was just okay.........but I've tasted way better marinades, and softer meat. This is a small mom & pop local plate lunch kinda place, so you walk in and order, then find a place to sit. They call you when your food is ready, then you pick it up, and sit down. There is no wait service here............ What I did find interesting about this place, was that they served some very unique items on their small menu. A few items I found interesting was the - 1. Bulgogi Fries 2. Luau Fries 3. Orange Whip 4. Lilikoi Soda Well, maybe I just picked the wrong items to eat today.........maybe if there's a next time for this place, I will pick a few items that is more suitable to my taste? Lots of free parking in the private parking lot, but the lot is shared with other businesses.

We tried this place for breakfast on our first day on the Big Island and decided not to return the other days. I ordered some traditional American breakfast food and what I received wasn't even up to McDonald's standards. I can't imagine less of an effort in food preparation. In fact, the "hash browns" was a deep fried formed potato patty. And it wasn't even that fast. I think they're phoning it in.

A-Ok! Nothing fancy. Their menu isn't extensive like a L&L/Loco Moco. In fact, it reminds me more of Rainbow Drive-In on Oahu. But they do have some unconventional items, like somen noodles, and "daily special" items like Zippy's does. Lots of seats, air-conditioned, and affordable. My overall rating is 3.5 stars. No problems with staff or price. The portions aren't as filling, so that's about my only knock. Still, can't be too picky on this side of the island!

This place is A-freakin-Mazing. Anything less than 5 stars would be criminal. We ate here 3 times during our trip. We stopped by here on a lark as we were heading to Greenwell Coffee for a tour one morning. We passed by and decided to turn around as we didn't have breakfast yet. Everything is so good. I love the Spam Musubi and Beef Lumpia. The Loco Moco plate will fill you up for hours. On our last night we decided to get the specials and eat back at the hotel. The specials were the kiawe smoked pork with onions and the kalva pig and cabbage. Both dishes were flavorful and came with the rice and killa macaroni salad. They have different daily specials. This place has been in business since 1966 and is a local gem with great food at a great price.

We got the shrimp plate. The shrimp were cooked well but it was covered in way too much breading. The loco moco was pretty decent but nothing too special. As someone else said do not come here if you want to eat healthy, that ain't happening.

This is where I had my first Loco Moco - some 50 or so years ago. Unlike other places that try to outdo one another with over-the-top Loco ingredients, Sandy's has stayed true to its roots. We dropped in for lunch last week and their Loco Moco tastes the same as it did back in the day, i.e., ono-licious. There's something to be said for staying the course!

this place was delicious! went here during a vacation to Hawaii and was recommended to this place and were glad we did. it was delicious and definitely gave generous portions. The workers here were very friendly too, but then again, it seems like everyone is friendly in hawaii.

We have been here a few times over the years and this is a great place to go for some local Hawaiian food. We have tried the loco moco, spam musubi, chicken katsu, mahi mahi, and bulgogi fries. Our favorite was definitely the chicken katsu plate lunch. Got to love the greasy, carbiness that comes in many plate lunches, and where ever they got the sauce was from, it was way better than L &L.

This place is a local gem for local food. Hungry for a mixed plate? Bento box? Spam musubi? Loco Moco ? Chicken boat? They have got it! You get a good amount of food for the dollar, and it so good you just want to keep eating. I know whenever I go back home, this is the place I go to get my fix for local food. As for the restaurant itself - while they did do a lot to renovate from how I remembered the restaurant to be, they could improve on being a little bit cleaner? Idk.. maybe it's just me.

pulled into Sandy's after a long drive up from South Point... We were hungry and ready to snack... Tried the 2-combo mixed plate (teriyaki beef + fried chicken) and one of their specials: bbq spare ribs... The ribs were delicious...yum. We tried to stop at a bbq rib joint but it was closed...so we were happy to find Sandy's. The teriyaki beef was a little too...sweet + the fried chicken was good but the portion was a bit small in comparison to the amount of teriyaki beef they gave out. Prices were good. 6-7.75 for a mix plate, the usuals... Plenty of tables (around 6-7), lots of parking in the area. Cash only! Friendly service.. We got in before a dinner rush, so by the time we were smacking away, there were about 10 people in line on a friday night. I'd want to try some other goodies, next time.
