Not expecting much from this slightly dingy-looking roadside diner, I popped open my styrofoam plate lunch to find that fish plate on Molokai means...a whole fish, caught that day, gutted, fried or grilled to order, and put onto a plate, with rice and tossed salad. It was fantastic, and all for under 10$. Molokai Mo' Bettah. I can't stress enough the perfection of this fried akule: crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, without any greasiness or grossness. I devoured the fins, eyes, everything but the spine. It was that good. All over mo'bettah, Molokai (Drive Inn), I will return!

CLOSED. We searched for this place and finally asked locals where it was. It closed two weeks ago. Locals were sad about it.

Because this place is a drive in along the main street in Kaunakakai and you're on the tiny island with not many choices our expectations were pretty low. But, everything we ate here was great. Perfectly cooked, moist, tasty, well-seasoned and delicious. LOVED the honey dip chicken which was so crispy it crackled during every bite and the chicken meat was tender and moist, it was no doubt the best fried chicken we ever had! The ice cream sundae's are a staple and the other specials looks ono too!

The food is ok-- it is a drive inn after all so expect it to be on the go food. We ordered saimin, a Garden Burger, and a grilled ahi plate. They offered fresh akule as a special but were out by the time I tried ordering it. The saimin was good-- the noodles were slightly chewy and the broth was subtle and savory. The grilled ahi plate was ok-- many of the pieces had the dark, hardish meat. If you're on the way to the airport or heading to the west end, Molokai Drive Inn is a decent place to grab food to go.

Molokai Drive Inn brings back many childhood memories. I remember when it was a Dairy Queen. They have Local Grindz and Onolicious burgers here. After demolishing our burgers, I went to see what they had for dessert selections, and my eyeballs almost popped out of my sockets when I saw they had what I thought was an extinct ice cream flavor...Blueberry Freckle!!!! Yes, its just Vanilla Ice cream freckled with lots of blueberries which was a childhood favorite of mine, you can't even get this flavor on Oahu anymore!(Last time I remember seeing this on Oahu was at Gibson's in Moanalua, and that's a VERY LONG time ago!) I ordered a triple and polished that off in record time. Don't know when I'm ever gonna set foot on The Friendly Isle again, but it was cool to know that my favorite ice cream flavor still exists. Now only if someone on Oahu would carry that flavor!....ALOHA!!!

Went there today for breakfast..............had me the breakfast special of - Portuguese Sausage, Eggs, & Rice with Coffee for $5.25! How can you beat that???? Even a gallon of gas cost more at $5.36 per gallon! The eggs were made purrrrrrrfect! The Portuguese Sausage threw me for a loop, as I've never seen it made that way...........I thought the lady either took my order wrong, or that she gave me lup chong (Chinese Sausage). When I cut the sausage & bit into it..........it was spicy & flavorful! It was DEFINITELY Portuguese Sausage! A great deal, fast & friendly service! What more can you ask for...........oh, also the coffee was GOOOOOOOD too! Rich & bold..............not like the watered down stuff you would normally get at a drive inn. Can't go wrong............10+ stars, for value & food! One more thing, the locals who came in were doing the mushroom burger & the shrimp burger.............gotta try it next time I make it back to Molokai!

A reasonable assortment of menu items. I genuinely enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich. Mostly processed and packaged foods.

According to Yelp a 3 star review is "A-OK", which is about as high as I can go for Molokai Drive-In. Yes, it is a local favorite and a lot of my friends go here at least once a week, if not more. But, I think I've had enough bad experiences with the counter staff to not give it a higher rating. A few of their dishes are excellent (Chop Steak with Mac Salad and Rice is great) and a few are not (Nachos are basically stale chips with "cheese" sauce), so depending on what you order you may either love or hate the food. If food is the only reason you want to go here, then try a few different things on the menu and find the one that appeals most to you. If you try just one thing it might not be indicative of the quality of other dishes too. However, if you care about the entire package -- from food to service to environment - then this might not be the place for you. Here's an example: I went there in the evening one day with my wife. We enjoyed a nice meal, and since we were there in the booths writing out our plan for the week and doing a bit of work, we got two coffees to drink. The next day I had enjoyed my experience the night before so I wanted to go back and try something new. I went to the front counter and asked for a coffee. "Oh, we don't serve coffee" said the clerk. "What do you mean? I just had coffee here." I asked. "Yeah, but we don't have coffee here, but you can find it at other places on Moloka'i" she explained. "Actually, I had it here yesterday at this restuarant" I said. "Just 12 hours ago." "No, we only serve coffee for breakfast" she said. "We don't offer it after breakfast hours". "But, I had a coffee here at this restaurant last night", I explained. We went back and forth like this for a bit, and then she went back to ask someone (a manager, maybe?) and came back saying that they don't serve cofeee except for breakfast. "But then who here served me coffee last night?" I asked. She shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know. It wasn't me." So I walked out. It was honestly one of the most frustrating customer service experiences I've ever had in my life (and I lived in China for 8 years). It took a long time before I went back there again, and each time I go I assume that I'll have a terrible experience. Fortunately about half the time I don't, and since a lot of my friends like to eat there (clearly more for the food than anything else) I still go there from time to time. I mentioned that story to a local friend one time. He said "Yeah, people on Molokai don't get trained on Customer Service because the turn over is so fast. There's no point to train someone who will only be there a few weeks or months." So, long review short, I give this place a "your mileage may vary" on the food, and I give this place a "you'll probably get upset" on the service. And as for the environment ... it's a drive-in on Moloka'i. What exactly are you expecting?

This place has closed down. When it was open it had some decent items on the menu and served one of the best prime rib plates on the island when offered as a daily special. They had a huge menu at cheap prices of the typical lunch plate restaurant

I absolutely cannot figure out how this place is rated as high as 3 1/2 stars. The food is definitely one star quality. And they didn't have any coffee -- I mean, really!?! For breakfast?!? That's just wrong! But I give them kudos for good service and lots of shrimp in their shrimp omelet. Oh, and interestingly enough, they have free Wifi.

Well i ordered the wonton mein and immediately after the first bite i had to blow out of all my orifices, my god i felt like spongebob in that episode where he's got the suds. After using the restroom i came back and checked out my food and it had mold all around the noodles, terrible experience the only positive was they gave me a refund.

A local fast food joint in the heart of Kaunakaki lies this place. With limited Internet access in Kaunakaki town, I didn't know whether if the town was really wired or some thing else. I wanted to check reviews on this place, before making an informed decision. With anything else, I just took the plunge and came to this place not knowing what to expect. Like L&L drive-ins and Zippy's in Honolulu to name a few, L&L drive-in is basically authentic made and simplistic in eateries go. Nothing much to review on this place, other than the fact that it does have a pretty good menu with some local kine stuff that I grew up loving as a kid. These days I'm more into the healthy ways of living life, but there is no denying that you cannot go wrong with a good burger and fries. Or even oxtail soup, which I haven't had, in like forever. There was a small parking area next to the restaurant itself. It was a small building but had a dining area for his patrons. I guess you can't go wrong with this case, especially when you're quite famished I need food ASAP. I actually bought a lunch and dinner together, saving the dinner entrée for later when I needed food on command and did not want to go back into town. I ended up getting the sautéed shrimp plate and the mushroom burger special. I also got the couple Bentos just to be sure we weren't left hungry. After seeing couple people leave with their food it was obvious that people do come here regularly. Thought that was awesome and made me think of home. The prices here are not that bad considering that it is Molokai. Even though L&L drive-in and Zippy's has higher prices, there is value and consistency that sets this place apart. Plus you're on Molokai, so it is only fitting that this place really embraces the local aspect of all that is done here on the island. I basically dug into the sautéed shrimp plate first and it was not as good as it sounded. I thought it would have been better but it is what it is. It was really good but I thought that maybe you needed something else to really made it a five-star meal instead of just 3 1/2 stars. Perhaps Bar-B-Q sauce or Tabasco would have been nice but it was good either way. We did not eat in at the restaurant dinning area, but at the nearby Duke Maliu Regional Park and enjoy the beach scenery. It was nice to just be out and about on the island, especially when it's not really comfortable in that building to begin with and you have so much nature around you to enjoy. I enjoyed the Bentos more than the mushroom burger. Don't get me wrong the mushroom burger was pretty done good but I just enjoyed the Bentos more. Maybe I was just craving Bento for a long time since I never had them. In any case this place Overall, Molokai Drive Inn is my inspiration to head back to other unexplored plate lunch places again, sans L&L Drive Inn and Zippy's, in Honolulu and the other islands, of travel takes me there again. Maybe next time I will try their ice cream. Support local! B

We have seen a few critters running across the counter and food prep areas this month alone. A rat roach ants and more roaches. Greasy food. Inconsistent. Rude staff. Sometimes the food burns through the plate. Boy worker makes inappropriate advances to women patrons

This is a good place to stop in and grab food and take it home or to the beach. If you order their teriyaki beef with rice, its enough for two and pretty yummy. You can also get pie by the slice. I don't think it is made there but still good.

I won't go back here. The first 3 top items that I wanted to order were all out of stock. I ended up settling on some beef thing that was rubbery. I also ordered a shake after hearing they were amazing. I ordered the blueberry shake. It was vanilla ice cream with about 5 blueberries mixed in. It had a gross, plain taste. My boyfriend ordered tuna and it was so overcooked. It was white and not at all pink. The service was awful. They do not speak or understand english very well. We sat outside and there were cats circling our table the whole meal. They were definitely eye'ing up our meal. We were afraid that they were going to pounce on us at any moment. It did not make for a pleasant eating environment but we didn't want to go inside because there were about 25 kids running around in there. Neither of us finished our meals. Instead we went back to our condo and cooked a better dinner. Don't waste your time and money here.

Great Ox-tail soup, fish & chips. The place to go for cheap and quick food. Many items are standard diner fare but this place has been open for close to 40 years. Always pop by when participating in the Molokai Food and Business Expo. What else is there?

Poke me again! Great eats, family owned. The local fare, like saimin and loco moco, is great. Burgers are ok, but the real secret is the poke. Fresh poke. Homemade poke. Poke made from tuna, line caught by a lone fisherman in a little boat in the channel just offshore and just a couple hours earlier. They make fresh poke every morning except Tuesday, as I recall. It sells fast and it's dirt cheap. $2.50 a pound for large chunks of fresh, natural, unprocessed tuna with sesame oil, chopped scallions. Try to find that bargain anywhere else. That's the cheapest and healthiest protein in Hawaii. I had it for breakfast lunch and dinner, so much, I was pooping fish like a seagull! One day, after getting my pound of poke each day for a week, the lady who runs the place said "excuse me sir, but who are you buying this for everyday? Haole don't eat poke - oh sorry for saying that!". I told her that it was for me and "Yes, haole do eat poke! I've been eating it since I was a boy, growing up in the Pacific and my teenage son behind me orders his own because he eats it too". She was really surprised and frankly, a little embarrassed. She smiled and said "then you are an honorary local, welcome!" and handed me a Molokai Drive-in T-shirt. The bond between loyal customer and shop owner formed. Best poke there anywhere, anytime and yes, haole still eats a ton of poke all around the world. I'll eat at Molokai drive-in as a first choice on the island. Awarded Mr. Gastronaut's 'Real Deal' Award for authentic contemporary Hawaiian dishes and the best poke on the planet.

Blah. Fried rice tasted like white rice with a bit of food coloring. My mom and I were utterly disspointed in that for what we paid for... ...though the saimin was probably the only thing I'd get from here...tried a few things on their menu and was dissapointed minus the saimin because both my mom and I liked it. Had better--much better.

Where to start, born and raised here on Molokai truly the friendly island. Everything you find is mom and pops, or family owned. With not much places to eat out u always find a favorite item on the menu and here at Molokai Drive Inn some of my all time favorites are 1)Chop steak plate- Teri beef sliced up fried with round onions, rice and Mac salad. 2)Won ton min-won tons with s&s saimin. 3) teri burger- thin slices of Teri beef in a toasted bun with Mayo and lettuce, goes well with won ton min.4)Mushroom Burger special- sauteed mushrooms over homemade beef Patty with Swiss cheese over Mayo and a toasted bun, fries and drink. 5)double cheese burger- 2 homemade beef patties, 2 slices American cheese, ketchup mustard 3 pieces of bread/bun. This are just some of my favorite to name the list goes on and on very delicious. I currently have been living on Oahu and fly home atleast once every 3 months and always stop in to Molokai Drive Inn. I almost forgot to add they serve as a choice of beverage Tang so take advantage of this kid time favorite goes well with any choice on menu. Aloha and thanks for reading.

I live on this island so Molokai Drive-In is delicious to me due to lack of option. Otherwise it is subpar food. Not the friendliest place but the service is good. I would recommend the Philly cheesesteak meal and the nachos.

Many better places in town, Teriyaki beef was $1 higher than at the Cookhouse and half as good. Could be alot better with a little effort.

Well, your food options on Molokai are limited. You've probably already found this out. That said, Molokai Drive Inn is a great stop any time of day. Favorite items: 1) Mushroom Burger 2) Chicken in a boat (fried chicken wings in a bowl with fries) 3) Fried Saimin (with or without green onion!) 4) Chop Steak. In high school we'd monopolize the parking lot of this place on weekend nights with dropped minitrucks and booming stereos. While the weekend nightlife these days isn't what it used to be, you can still get good food until late! Well, late by Molokai standards, which is 10 PM I think).

Unfortunately, this charming little drive in closed in June 2015 due to a property dispute with the large Molokai ranch owner. Too bad, been there over 50 years.

This little place was a lifesaver multiple times we were on Molokai. It's nothing fancy, and definitely more a fast food stop. It has a little of something for everyone, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and is open later than everything else on island. Molokai Drive Inn, you are a diamond in the rough. I got a breakfast sandwich one day, for $3, and deluxe tuna sandwich for lunch another day with a side of macaroni salad for $4 and some cheese stick and sweet potato fries one late night after drinking at Paddler's for $5. The price is right, the food is alright, mahalo for keeping us full and giving us more time to exploring the island.

This weary traveller almost cried while chewing the first bite. Not since the streets of Bangkok have I had such a poetic experience in homage to fried chicken. No morsel left unrevered, no organic gasps of heaven in the mouth left unnoticed by the unassuming locals, silently munching and not appreciating the ecstasies my brain and body were merging into one delicious rapture that was the Honey dip chicken plate 9.25. I dip my mind dreamily into memories of this chicken every day. I drive stony srunchfaced past Popeyes, KFC, and Zippy's with an insatiable lust in my mouth for the Moloka'i Drive in honey dip chicken. Cruel world. Take me back.
