The heaven of the food is well paired with warm and friendly service. But watch out for the mud pie dessert. Whoa! #FeedingFrenzy Gorgeous views. Extremely comfortable space. Kids can play in the yard down below in the yard by the ocean. Our family had a lovely evening here together and Leilani was an absolutely fantastic server and a pleasure to meet.

Beautiful sunset. Incredible food (perfectly cooked ahi steak and lamb chops) and A+ service. Local ingredients, food tastes like it was meant to. Owner sat and chatted with us for 30 minutes about the good life, Hawaiian culture, and the complexities of mixing the modern world with the rest. Where are you, and why are you not here? I will be back

Hands down the best place we ate on our two weeks on the Big Island, the calamari is to die for, the filet is so yummy, my son loved the pork taco's, my hubby and dad loved the ribs. Did I mention the service was amazing? Thank you Angie for giving my little Gecko hunter the baby gecko, she will remember you forever! This is a hidden gem, and right above the beach! We will be back!

Amazing food and service. Beautiful view. The calamari is out of this world. I had the chef's special for the evening which was fabulous and my friend had the Ahi...also fabulous. Had the delicious banana split for dessert. Service wonderful. Will go back. This is a must stop if you're a foodie.

Superb dining on all dimensions. Outstanding food and libations, excellent service, Hawaiian music, and the sunset over the ocean. I had the Ahi Poke, and my sister had one of the shrimp pupus. Unusual drinks, including the shaved ice martini (an adult version of a sno-cone) and the mango margerita. Lovely way to end our vacation on the Big Island!

The best kept secret on the island. If ya don't know ya betta ask somebody!!! The view alone is priceless. Start your experience with a ice cold refreshing Permanent Vacation. Then grab the poke appetizer. Simply delicious and fresher then fresh. I recommend the Opaka Paka for your entree. Crisp on the outside super soft on the inside. Served with rice and a crunchy Kim Chee. The wait staff is full of Aloha and makes your experience one for the culinary record books. Be sure to make this a must on your to do list when visiting the Big Island.

I had a chance to eat lunch here with friends on my last trip to the Big Island. We were in the area and they said that it was a nice place to eat. We pulled in, passing the gated area.....and walked into the restaurant. Once we were seated....it had a beautiful view of the ocean. The restaurant is open air and it is a good spot for people watching as well....lots of 'crisping' people enjoying the sand and ocean. Our service was good here...the waitstaff was very attentive and polite. Were were given menus and we decided on the following: Shave ice martini This was prettier than it tasted.....in the beginning. But once the shave ice melted....it was reverse...it tasted better than it looked....funny how that works. Ahupua'a salad The wife's salad was good....it had local greens, strawberries, tomatoes, and goat cheese. It just didn't seem like it had the right amount of ingredients....it needed more strawberries and tomatoes. Mahi mahi fish and chips Mine was tasty...the batter was a beautiful color of brown, speckled with herbs...but the flavor wasn't as appealing as I thought it was going to be. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but under seasoned. I would go back to try more food....maybe dinner. Definitely a great view.

Napua means "The Flowers". It is located on Kaniku (off Mauna Lani Drive), in the private Mauna Lani Beach Club. While the Club is private, the restaurant is open to the public. The Kalahuipua'a fishponds along the walk from where you park to the restaurant are historic. They were once used to raise i'a (fish) for the ali'i (Hawaiian royalty). To drink, I had the signature shave ice martini ($12 - Grey goose vodka, liliko'i, pineapple and a splash of coconut). Unfortunately, the drink looked better than it tasted. It didn't taste like much, the ice was crushed vs shave, but the initial view is pretty cool. I'm glad it didn't cost more: 3 Stars. My cousins had smoothies @ $8/each: Garden variety, but very, very pricey. We started w/ the BLT ($17 - Pork belly, local greens and tomato puree atop focaccia bread). Secondarily, two of us split a ahupua'a salad ($10 - Locally grown hirabara greens & wow farms tomato, w/ a honey vinagerette and goat cheese). The BLT looked appetizing. But the tomato puree didn't taste good, and the pork belly was more like bacon. This dish was poorly executed: 2 Stars. Second dish: First of all, the name ahupua'a makes no sense. Ahupua'a means heaps of stones (ahu) for pigs (pua'a). The boundary markers for ahupua'a were traditionally heaps of stones used to put offers to the island chief, which was often a pig. In any case the local greens & tomatoes were very tasty. However, the combination of the remainder of the ingredients was nothing special: 3 Stars. For our entrees, I had the Kaua'i 'opae (Kaua'i prawns) w/ the fresh catch - a'uku: Broadbill swordfish ($36 - Lobster miso & kumbocha pumpkin puree). My cousins ordered the Chef's special ($38 - Ono w/ tako kimchee poke & mashed taro); Local, grass-fed filet mignon ($34 - w/ bacon, poha berry sauce, garlic mashed potatoes & local asparagus); Baby back ribs w/ guava bbq sauce ($32). Sorry, no pics for the latter three items because my cousins were getting sick of me taking pics of their food. While the a'uku was dry from being overcooked, the 'opae were excellent. They were really sweet and you could taste the difference vs other kinds of prawns. The only thing that could have been better w/ the prawns was to have cooked them less: 2 Stars for the a'uku & 4 Stars for the 'opae. Likewise, the ono was also overcooked, but not as bad as the a'uku. However, the side dishes were very good. The tako in the poke was tender, and the kimchee had a nice kick. Additionally, the mashed taro was really smooth: 3 Stars for the ono, 4 Stars for the sides. The filet was very good. My cousin killed it! The locally grass fed beef has a clean, distinctive taste. In addition, the sides were also very good. The garlic mash were nice and smooth, and the vegetables were crunchy: 4 Stars. Lastly, the ribs were also very good. The meat was smoked, so it came out super tender. Additionally, the guava bbq sauce was also very unique and flavorful. Nonetheless, the price for 1/2 a rack was too high: 3 Stars. Leilani, our waitress was awesome! She was super friendly, knowledgable about the menu, and very proactive. Plus she olelo Hawai'i (spoke Hawaiian). It was nice to chat w/ her in our native tongue. The wait staff was also excellent. Water was refilled w/o asking, dishes were cleared quickly, and the koena (leftovers) were wrapped nicely. The only thing that could have been better was the wait time w/ the kitchen. There was a long gap between dishes: 5+++ Stars for Leilani, 5 Stars for waitstaff, but 2 Stars for the kitchen. The ambiance is amazing. There is a beautiful Hawaiian tapestry at the entrance, and live music. In addition, the view of the beach is fantastic. Lastly, the Kalahuipua'a fishponds are really cool. The only area for improvement could have been fans on the patio tables. After the wind died down it became very warm: 5 Stars despite the latter item. Despite the mixed ratings on the food, I would come back to "The Flowers" to enjoy the excellent service and the amazing view and surroundings. It is a very unique place. BTW, dinner is better for parking vs lunch. The private gate is not open til later in the day. You would have a long walk at lunch time.

We just so happened to be here for the most amazing sunset I've ever seen. The food was very good - especially the ribs! Service was great and it's definitely less expensive than some of the restaurants on the resort. If you're staying at any of hotels on the property there is a free shuttle.

We thought we had to be part of the Mauna Lani Beach Club to eat here for dinner but that is not the case. Anyone can drive into the resort and dine here. I'm not sure if it's the same for lunch. It's a fancier restaurant so I was glad I wore a cute, flowy summer dress and my boyfriend had on a collared dress shirt and shorts. The view, gorgeous and romantic. The food, "meh". It's very pricey and I think you really pay for the service, presentation and the view. I ordered a shaved ice martini. It was very cute, but forgettable taste-wise. The most memorable was the fresh catch ahi tuna sashimi which beautifully presented in slices served with pickled veggies and tasted very fresh. The poke was good but of course not the best I've had on the Big Island. We both ordered a fresh catch for our main dish but didn't like it very much because it tasted bland and dry. The highlight of our night was of course the dessert! It was so good I ate most of it. We ordered fried banana with ice cream. The fried banana is wrapped in a thin wonton kind of wrap, deep fried, served with ice cream and drizzled with caramel. Crunchy, sweet, and creamy! Our waitress was nice and friendly and offered to take pictures for us at different angles until we got the best shot. We came for dinner while the sun was still up and got to see the sunset during dinner. They light the tiki torches once the sun sets which makes the mood very romantic. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and privacy here. There weren't any screaming kids running around.

  • Tammy W.

I had a limited experience here since we mostly came for music (Sonny Lim) and had tea and desserts, BUT the space is simply beautiful. It's right on the water, there are tiki torches and twinkle lights on the trees and the tables are beautifully set up with mini terrariums and rustic wooden menu holders and salt holders. The service was impeccable, so polite, attentive and pleasant. Yes, the food is expensive. Average entree is 35$, appetizers all around $16, but you def pay for the atmosphere. We got the mud pie and cream puff desserts plus hot tea (4$ for a pot -- we got a refill). My friends got the calamari and shrimp and loved those appetizers. The desserts were okay, don't have much of a sweet tooth, but i'd return for the food on a special occassion.

Estelle, Thank you much for being such a fabulous server and great conversationalist! My BF and I had the best time at Napua during our stay at the Mauna Lani... Both pescetarians and dining on the local catch and prawns for the meal. Our server and the sommelier were both helpful in terms of meal questions, wine questions, and suggestions based on dietary preferences. We were looking for an upscale night out on the Big Island and we definitely recieved just that!

While i love being in Big Island, it can be bit hard to find good dinner options. We came to this place on a stormy night. We were sitted at the open patio. They was a guy playing hawaian music. We ordered quinoa salad and lamb chops. Watch out for portion sizes though. We split both the salad and lamb in half and it was more than enough. We ordered fried banana ice cream dessert and we felt that it can feed a hungry group of 8. That said the food was great, awesome laid back ambience and friendly service.

This is really two different restaurants during the day and evening. During the day, It's a great place for the family enjoying the members only beach. BBQ Pulled Pork, Fish Sandwiches and Calamari steaks were some of our favorites. At night time, the gates open to the public and the white tableclothes come out. The menu is more upscale with an excellent take on seared Ahi (I know you think you are ahi'd-out by the third day of eating poke, etc., but try this version and you'll be pleasantly surprised). There's grass fed meat, lamb and other heartier dishes that don't appear on the lunch menu. The service is excellent. During the day, the servers are friendly laid-back folks. At night time, it's many of the same friendly folks, but a more involved manager adds a more serious tone to the restaurant and the pace picks up a bit. Live music is just right with a singer doing Hawaiian tunes while playing a guitar. While it does do a good amount of business all day long, it may be an undiscovered gem at nighttime. We enjoyed several lunches and a very nice dinner there. I'd recommend this with our without yoiur teens on tow. There is something for everyone to enjoy.

Another amazing dinner at Napua. The family and team making the food and serving are so great. The food keeps getting more amazing!! The Macadamia nut crusted ahi was prepared perfectly! Dining at Napua is always the highlight of my trip to the Big Island. So much Aloha. Thank you!

Dinner at Napua was the best dining of our trip by a long-shot. We both had delicious food. Highlight was our starter--definitely the best Ahi Poke I've ever had. The view is pretty spectacular--it's right on a private beach for the Mauna Lani Beach Club. We watched the sunset from our table, where we could even see Maui across the ocean. The restaurant used to be private to the club, so that explains the non-obvious entrance and laid-back feel. Pay attention to the directions they give when you make the reservation/look on the website for parking info. Google maps will fail you. Service was excellent as well. They asked when I made the reservation if we were celebrating anything special, and they actually prepared when I told them it was our honeymoon! They started off our meal with a lovely champagne toast. Side note--they have these gorgeous wooden salt cellars on the table from a local artist, with "salt" and a leaf engraved. We loved them and contacted the artist to buy one for us and one as a gift, and found out you can also buy them at the restaurant. Heads up in case you love them like we did!

Nice atmosphere. Restaurant is not very large and feels intimate. Service was excellent. Good wine list. We had the pork buns for appetizer - they are to die for! For mains we had pork spare ribs, fresh fish special and short ribs. All were excellent. Not as impressed with dessert but they were adequate. Would recommend. Price very respectable compared to similar restaurants in the area.

This place is an amazing hidden gem. There is no such thing as a bad seat, but the view from our table was nothing short of spectacular. Of course, it's hard to go wrong with such a perfect waterfront location coupled with a view of Mauna Kea. The service was exemplary, and the attention to detail was evident in the ambiance - classy yet comfortable and cozy. The live music was the icing on the cake. Lito Arkangel was impressive without being overbearing, and our oceanside dinner was perfect. The food was soooo good. I ate until I couldn't fit any more. We had Thai shrimp and clamari steak for appetizers. The appetizer portion were huge so I skipped the salad. Both were so good, I had to consciously slow down, so I could enjoy my entree. I had the special of the day which was ono prepared with a lobster cream sauce served with tempura bok choi. Conversation had to pause a bit because every bite had to be savored. Had a Reisling with my dish. My BF had the mahi dish. Catch of the day, and if you've ever had fresh mahi, it's awesome. I was stuffed but we had to have dessert. I had the fried banana lumpia with macadamia ice cream. He had the chocolate peanut butter cheesecake. Needless to say, I had to be practically rolled out of the restaurant. Overall, great place for a nice dinner date.

Fly to the big island and go to Napua!!!! It's that worth it!!! The fish is fresh and to die for, with delicate presentation and the filet was tender and beautiful with a Boursin cheese garnish that made the dish. The fried banana split would literally make me fly thousand of miles to come back!!!!!!! Yum!!!

Do yourself a favor and don't go unless you're just in it for a drink and the view. I can only speak for lunch of which, I dined twice for it. Once because I was staying there and it was recommended. And the second because my husband liked the poke we had the day prior. You're in Hawaii. You can't mess up Poke. What you can mess up, however, is a salad, apparently. We tried 3 in the two times visiting. The sorry excuse for a Chinese chicken salad (just gross), the Caesar (which was begging for more dressing that probably came from a bottle) and the boring and generic Cobb. Maybe dinner is better? I don't care to try again, but maybe you will.

Although we ordered lunch, and had limited time, I thought they did a terrific job. We had the fish tacos, fresh and delicious. There was a little hot sauce on the side that add that extra special zing to it. Would definitely go back again, for lunch or dinner !!

My husband and I celebrated our 23rd anniversary here. This was our first visit to Napua and it was exquisite. Our table overlooked a beautiful bay with a beautiful sunset. We had Ono with scallop and mashed sweet potatoes and vegis. For dessert was we had a chocolate ganache cake and tropical cobbler. Everything was to die for. Our waitress Lelani gave us amazing and personable service. We will be back again for sure. Perfect evening.

Ok now we are happy. A true Hawaiian restaurant with good mana and aloha. The food is Ono to da max(the most delicious) and the service is unbelievable. Brandon Lee will assure you have a true experience of love and aloha. This restaurant is aimed at giving you the true experience of what Hawaii is; young, ambitious, talented chef and Sommelier with service staff that understands the needs of the consumer. The ability to provide that service is insurmountable and attention to detail is lacking in all other restaurants in the area. We recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a genuine local experience with exceptional people and food that cannot be found anywhere else. The calamari is flavorful, moist and well seasoned and the poke (raw fish) is tender and fresh with delicate notes. Mahalo to you Napua, I would gladly come back and spend my money here, you have more than earned it.

5 star restaurant. 1 star access. Go for dinner or walk for lunch. Do not try to drive for lunch. The resort won't let you in. We went for dinner and the food was excellent. Grass fed fillet and salad were top notch. Very heavy pour of two delicious wines and I was happy I wasn't driving. Recommend if you're staying there or at the Fairmount Orchid.

Absolutely amazing restaurant! Tucked away in a tiny corner, it's peaceful and private. Our server was a very kind local who gave great tips about food and local beach spots that we should hit. The food was phenomenal as well! I had the BBQ ribs with jasmine rice. It was great but nothing was like the calamari appetizer and tuna poke! My whole family was raving about them afterwards. Highly recommend both.

Don't go here for lunch. Closest parking is a small secluded public parking (feels unsafe to leave car there) and hike a mile+ to the restaurant. Probably not worth the time and effort it takes to dine here. In comparison Four seasons lets you drive in for lunch or dinner.

Hawaii is synonymous with beautiful views and visitors can expect to find a bounty of restaurants that offer dining with gorgeous sights of the ocean. But there are only a handful that successfully deliver a gorgeous ambiance, fine dining and impeccable service. Napua is that location. It is nestled in a small cove on the Mauna Launi property and short walk from the main hotel. You pass through ancient Hawaiian fish ponds ripe with sea life on this trail that is such a cool way to get to restaurant. The venue itself exudes class without pretension, refreshing modernity yet the warmth of hugging a wise kupuna. Really, I can't express how impressed I was by the wonderful ambiance you experience. The food was delicious. From the locally fresh baked house focaccia, to the calamari (which is prepared as a steak and sliced for sharing), the fresh fish, to the ribs, every single one of the dishes my party of 9 ordered was wonderful. I would highly recommend this location for a romantic dinner, special occasion or simply a relaxing weekend escape from your regular hum drum. It really is something special.

We went for dinner last Tuesday night after a local friend recommended it to us. Kind of a stormy night two days before Christmas. The three of us sat at the bar. We LOVED the Calamari steak appetizer. So refreshing not to have rings fried! Our meals were amazing. But the best part for me was Lito Arkangel playing his music directly behind me. After we finished eating I turned my seat around to see and listen. Bought his CD too! LOVED this place. Friendly staff as well!!

My husband and I went here during our honeymoon. The location is great but you can't see the sunset from this location. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from the mauna lani bay hotel or you can use their courtesy shuttle. They don't accommodate walk-ins unless you want to sit at the bar. Service was fantastic. We went on a Tuesday night and they had live music which was nice. I ordered the filet and crab cake ( I don't remember the name of the dish). The filet was cooked perfectly but the crab cake was ok. Being from Maryland, I should have known better than to order an entree with a crab cake. My husband ordered the fresh catch of the day. It had a divine Thai curry sauce that made the whole dish fantastic! We didn't order an appetizer or dessert. The only reason I gave it 4 stars Instead of 5 is because its a bit pricy. We ordered 2 entrees, 2 side salads and 2 drinks and we spent well over $100.

Let me start by saying we had dinner here twice on our last visit. Great food and service! We even recommended this place to several people we meet on the island. We were looking forward to our visit on this trip. What a disappoint! This is one of the few times I have ever walked out of a restaurant. After walking in the door and being ignored by the servers for close to 10 minutes. One finally walks past us, does not say a word, and retrives, what looks like the manager. Again no one says a word. He comes out, sits us in the bar next the the live entertainment. Not really the relaxing atmosphere from our last visit. We finally get the bartenders attention and ask if we can move to a couple of open seats 90 deg from were we are sitting. The response ," no one sitting there now". Are they open seats or not? This is kind of a yes or no question. This was after another 10 minutes of being ignored. We move, given a couple of glasses of water, they just sit down and she walked away. Finally the bartender asked if we would like to order something. How about a drink menu, we asked. "oh I thought you had one" A couple of minutes looking for a menu, we had enough. 30 minutes in, all we had were a couple of glasses of water. Thankfully at minute 28, she put coasters under our glasses, and of course walked away. Not sure what happened from out last visit. New owners? busy? just didn't care? So we took our money elsewhere.

This place deserves 6 stars!!! The service was amazing-- our waitress was so attentive and super sweet. Our best dinning experience in the Big Island so far. We got drinks and the special appetizer. For dinner I had a great ahi salad and my husband had the flirt mignon-- both out of this world!!! The food, the staff, the view-- all of it made for one of our best nights here. The dessert was great too-- puff pastry with vanilla I've cream. This is a MUST for anyone who loves food and will be on this side of the island.

When we arrived, there were only two tables taken -- one, a big family with 4 kids, and another, a couple. The hostess sat us next to the table with kids, who were talking loudly, running all over the yard, etc. It was annoying, as I could have sworn I made a reservation at Napua, not Denny's. For dinner, we both had the duck. The portion size was ridiculously small -- like laughable. There was hardly any meat on the leg served. I've never seen such a small portion in all my years of ordering duck, and this was $34. I know that Napua was not to blame for the people who couldn't control their misbehaving kids, but I'm dinging them for the overpriced and undersized duck.

This is the restaurant/drink/etc access for the beach at the Mauna Lani resort condominiums so when It's CLOSED FOR RENOVATION until some undetermined date in October 2014 it's a huge problem. (Word is a water main break) but geez, no bathroom access at the beach? That's not good.

This place is awesome. Good service, but you must make reservations. The food was so outstanding and melted in our mouths. I ordered their ribs. OMG. The best I've had, ever!! The prices will knock your socks off in an expensive way, but worth it compared to other hotels who will charge the same price for some dried up chicken. Also, as you dine, you get a gorgeous view of the beach, because it's right there. As we dined the sun was setting and a lone sailboat was floating toward us. Ahhhh....paradise!

Napua was quite pricey, but it came with delightful food and a fantastic setting. We came in a bit before 5pm (though we had to talk our way past the gate, which opens at 5pm, as it turns out) and enjoyed an appetizer (fresh ahi poke - it was delicious!) and some drinks until they got their fresh catch of the day in and opened up their dinner menu. I didn't try the alcoholic drinks, but my mom didn't much like the Mai Tai, and I thought the virgin piña colada was a bit too sweet. As far as main dishes go, the burger was pretty good and the fresh catch of the day was delightful (and more than enough for two people). The setting was beautiful - looking out over a rare sand beach and with all-outdoor seating. After eating, we explored the beach and relished the sand, which was unusually fine (and comfortable for barefoot walking) compared to other beaches we visited.

Went for lunch - a fairly long hike from the public parking. Great location with ocean/beach view, food was ok. Crab & lobster quesadilla was mostly cheese, don't order it! Poke was good, as was somen salad with ahi, seared to perfection. Table near by had burgers, which looked great & they ate everything, including fries. View & service are the best things about this restaurant.

Beautiful view, food was delicious (I had the fish special) and hubby had the vegetarian special. Both came with a side of sweet purple potato which was cooked with coconut. Great service! For dessert we had the mud pie and the fruit cobbler. I preferred the fruit cobbler. Live music which was nice and great spot to watch the sunset.

The best in the area and may be in the Island Calamari appetizer is out of this world The atmosphere is very nice and service is excellent The chef is great which shows by taste of the dishes and their presentation We eat here couple of times, ahi tuna main dish was excellent, special with monk fish was very good, do not want to forget to mention side dishes, rolls and mashed blue potato, all were excellent We are picky eaters, so this was a very good restaurant We recommend it very much Enjoy as we did

Really disappointed after numerous times staying in Mauna Lani Hotel we frequent Napua every 6 months. So Napua is usually our special place we have a celebratory dinner for birthdays or anniversaries. Never a disappointment so we include this on our list as "special"'place for dinner. The service and ambience are not to be beat but the food has really gone downhill during our last dinner. In visiting the restaurant from 2 years ago and having dinner there every 6 months since, I have gained high expectations for their focus on food, great service, ambience with the special entertainment different than the other traditional establishments like the hotels. I noticed the General Manager visiting several tables but never once ours. You think he wouldn notice us after numerous times thoughout he year. Ok with us but when the last entree comes out an over cooked Ono which was the daily special was so dry dressed with an unusumming olive tepanade with a bits of tomatoes here and there on a bed of rice-cooker sticky rice and topped with a little tough greens. Pretty sad indeed. Understand the chef wasn't cooking on a Saturday night and was an understudy. The management was busy smoozing with famous locals and didn't remember us the regulars when we were in the restaurant. Really too busy on what we though of dinner. Oh well, too bad because other newer eateries are sensitive to visitor repeators at the Shoppes. Absolutely no ocem view, but the over the service, food extaoinaire which is consistant and something missed at the Napua the "ALOHA SPIRIT" which makes visiors comfortable and welcomed. Maybe the Napua management will breathe back the spirit but now the employees are riding it out for them. Napua needs a new energy to make all clients feel special and create their dishes so delicious that with hesitation we'll be back.

Great ocean views and ambience. Server was very nice. Food was a little overpriced and menu was limited. But the setting makes up for a lot. We would definitely return.

When we travel,a big part of the experience is enjoying the food and culture. Napua was recommended for the food and location and turned to be our most enjoyable meal. We shared the Chef's special Opakapaka, seared to perfection, with a seafood Mac n' Cheese. For dessert, their famous Haupia cake. They split the dish nicely and the service was great. Everything was outstanding!

omg! it was heaven! I posted that I wish I could vomit just to eat the calamari again, sounds gross but the calamari is that good! it was a culinary delight and the view of the ocean and beach was gorgeous! we sat outside and the only complaint was that the wind started to pick up, which I blame nature for ruining not the restaurant. the server was very attentive, moving us to another table inside and closing the doors. The food was so, good my wife and I got the desert even though we generally don't do that. the people that were there ranged from old couples, young couples and a couple families. it was spectacular from start to finish.

This was our third visit to Napua and it didn't disappoint. In terms of service, food quality and setting ,it may be the best on TBI. When we asked for a table near the water, our hostess said we would be next to a large party with two babies and we might be more comfortable at another table. Great call!! The hostess's sister, Melissa, was our waitress, and we've never had better service. She was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive but not overly attentive. We went with all her recommendations and they were wonderful. The Ahupua'a salad with Waimea tomatoes strawberries was wonderful. I asked if the lamb chops were tender and she enthusiastically said they were. And she was right - - the best lamb chops I've ever had. When we asked about them, Melissa went into the kitchen, looked up the cut of lamb chop, then wrote down the marinade for us. Over the top service! The only minor irritant was a woman who sat at a bar stool high table in the back whose kids ran back and forth through the restaurant all evening and she came alongside our table and started yelling at her kids. Don't know who she is, but this behavior should be stopped by management at such a wonderful restaurant. Two other tables with young children and babies controlled their children in a very respectful manner. Despite this minor annoyance, we'll be back again!

When you're on the big Island this restaurant is a must! The fresh seafood, the wonderful ambience, the service (thank you Jeremy) all adds up to a great evening!

Had the best time here, had drinks and the ribs that just fell off the bones. Great staff and the beach just down from the restaurant is the best to just chill.

Shave ice martini. 'Nough said. Oh, and the BEST calamari I've ever had. Delicious food, wonderful, still night atmosphere--great for a date or a formal group dinner. The service was wonderful, too!

Loved it. Last meal of family vacation and a great way to end it. Location is beautiful outdoor setting near the water (it was dark so can't comment on beach). Very quiet night which made ambience better than so many overcrowded upscale restaurants. Waitress was very friendly and attentive. Everything we had was good. The ahi poke appetizer was amazing - nice sesame oil hint and the avocado was perfect accompaniment. Lots of choices for kids and they offered fresh fish (as opposed to usual fish sticks). I had the mahi which came with prawns. Very nicely cooked - everything was fresh and tasty. Shrimp was nice touch. Wife had a steak and loved it as well. Great place for a nice quiet dinner under the stars with good food and great service.

We tried to visit the restaurant but were greeted with a private gate and told to drive a mile or so to park and walk back. We had hoped to enjoy the restaurant but were thwarted and diverted to Plan B.

We had lunch here after doing some snorkeling and letting the kids play in the sand. The environment and food was awesome. I had my swimsuit on post-snorkel and I wasn't the only one by any means. The place had the vibe that it was fine with whatever attire, although I'm sure it's a bit dressier in the evening. There were many families with children, and the server was very accommodating to our kids. The shaved ice martini was awesome! Also the fish tacos and local tuna salad were great. The kids loved their food, too. Nice view of the ocean to boot. The price was a bit steep for lunch -$120 with tip for two adults and two kids - but we did have cocktails and it would have been much pricier for dinner. Overall, totally worth the splurge - it's vacation after all!

This place is what Hawaii is about. Atmosphere is relaxing and comfortable. Private Members only cove beach but open to the public after 4pm and dinner. Beach is public. I highly recommend this place for dinner if you want a private romantic atmosphere with your better half. Also, Best Mai Tais in town. No Joking.

As many have stated the ribs are a must- I don't even like ribs and they were amazing. Ambience is outstanding and get the Hawaiian wedding cake if they have it- it was " off the menu". Yelp reviews were spot on and need to try calamari next time. Very kid friendly as they can even go run around the grass when their done eating. Can't beat the views. We will be back on our next vacation. Only thing were some flies hanging around once food came but they quickly provided some candles and that helped a lot. Still worth 5 stars.

We were a little hesitant to go to this resort restaurant with correspondingly higher than normal prices, but overall we were very pleased with our meal and the setting is truly beautiful. We had the calamari app that everyone recommended -- it has an interesting crunchy seasoning and is very tasty. We also had the strawberry feta salad others liked -- I would skip it, completely uninteresting. For entrees, I had a delicious Ono entree special with jasmine rice and broccoli rabe - fantastic. My companion had the filet made with local beef - tender with a tasty bacon garnish. We thought the mud pie dessert was over-rated - it's like a giant slice of Carvel cake - a slab of chocolate and vanilla on a cookie crust - probably 2000 calories and not worth it. We also shared the shaved ice martini which was really neat. The bill came to about $150 with tip - a little rich but it was a darn good meal in a great location. Service was very friendly and attentive - we had a lovely local Hawaiian waitress.

I so want to hate this place after a slow start when we got here, but it is so damn good. The food is exceptional and the drinks are perfect in every way. The location on the beach speaks for itself. The ribs are a must have. The mahi mahi is the most tender you'll ever have and the shrimp that come with it will blow your mind. Don't miss out on the BLT appetizer. Seriously amazing! The calamari is steak style not the cheap rings and tentacles at italian restaurants you might have had. It is lightly breaded and topped with a tomato and avo. Ending the night with the most incredible island delight the mud pie aka kona pie. When in kona right? Delish!!!! Most importantly try to make a reservation if you want to be seated right away and to get the most attentive service. Seems they are a bit short staffed, but still friendly. Waiters are also the bar tender which is a mistake for this class of restaurant. Make this a part of your island experience!

Delicious food and an unpretentious atmosphere. The only disappointment may have been the music... not that it was bad, but it just didn't hold up to the fantastic food and gorgeous Oceanside backdrop. Catch of the day was a thick piece of Mahi Mahi that was moist, delicate and mouthwatering good. I didn't get to taste the Filet and crab cake my wife ordered because I was too busy with my plate and when I was done, all that was left was a little pile of mashed potatoes (which were quite good - wish I had those instead of the little pile of rice!).

Just got back from the big island and we searched for a decent place to eat our whole week there. Finally on our last night we found this place and it was the best meal we had all week. The setting was gorgeous and the servers and manager couldn't be nicer. The food was very good. Not perfect, but definitely worth it if you are looking for a great restaurant on the big island.

Not to be missed! Location is divine, with glorious sunset bay, palms, & lovely landscaping. Service was impeccable and the food was excellent value. Calamari was perfectly done and with the best part of the "fish". Shared an entree and the staff definitely added extra at the same price. Coffee and dessert was equally impressive. Very quiet and understated; felt very welcome and comfortable chairs! Highly recommend. Staff was genuinely friendly.

Not impressive for our last meal on the island... We tried everything recommended ... The Guava Glazed Ribs and Calamari Steak...I think we also had the Clams. 3 Stars for Food, service and ambiance. 4 stars for the shuttle service back to Mauna Lani. The drivers are friendly and funny.

My wife and I closed down the beach in front of the Beach Club at sunset and decided to hang around for dinner. We were still in our beach clothes, though I had a collared shirt on and my wife a beach coverup over her swim suit. We were a bit under-dresssed to be sure relative to the other diners - but it is a Beach Club. Despite asking for a table in the center of the seating area, which were still empty when we left, the hostess ushered out to a far corner of the restaraunt. Which once it got dark was really dark as it was outside the lighting provided to the other tables. Our waiter tried to keep a candle lit on the table but with the wind that was an impossible task. By the time our food showed up it was just plain dark out there and we could not see our food that well. Really sort of a crummy experience. Esp, since there were empty tables back in the well lit part of the club. The food however was great - though somewhat expensive. My wife's Ahi was "melt in your mouth" according to her. My striped marlin was wonderfully cooked though the accompanying shrimp tasted like they had been around a while. All in all - good food, crummy experience. If you go make sure you dress for the occasion so they don't seat you out in the boondocks.

This is without a doubt the best food I've had on the island so far. Not to mention, you can't beat the atmosphere and the service was outstanding. Food is well-priced I think for what it is. I got the fish special (Ono) which came with lobster and prawns on a bed of unbelievably delicious purple sweet potato mash for $38. For dessert you must try the banana lumpia. I'm still dreaming about it.

Hubby and I stayed at the Mauna Lani Resort and watching the resort TV station saw a commercial about this restaurant. We hadn't seen anything about it on Trip Advisor or even seen the restaurant around the resort, but looked up some reviews and decided to try it. It's located at the Beach Club about 5 minutes away from the resort (you can drive or walk past the hawaiian fish ponds). The location is beautiful right behind the cove with a view of the ocean. The decor is very beachy and updated. The first thing we noticed was the service. We were warmly greeted, seated right away with a view, and our server Scott was really nice and had a great personality. He described some of his favorites on the menu, so we said, okay we'll have those! We ordered the Tuna Sashimi (rolled in Furikake, flash fried with a tomato tartar) Sooo delicious! Also had the Calamari appetizer, delicious! We ordered the Rib-Eye and it was perfectly seasoned and prepared (better than Ruth Chris). Ended with the Enormous Mud Pie, soo good. We left that night very satisfied with our meal and the service. Our last night on the island we decided to come back. Out of all the nicer restaurants we tried, the food was the best, the service was also very good and the atmosphere laid back and perfect. We ended up having the restaurant all to ourselves! Talk about romantic. I think this place is not very well advertised but beach club members want to keep it that way. Our meal was excellent like the first, we had the Tuna Sashimi again, the Scallops, and the Ribs with the Guava glaze (YUM!), ended our meal with the Banana fritters with Vanilla Ice Cream. The sun setting over the ocean was beautiful and we had a really nice last dinner on the Island. When we come back to the Mauna Lani, we are definitely coming back here! Try it, you won't be disappointed.

We came to this restaurant for lunch last year as part of our spa day experience. Sadly, last year, the rude shuttle driver put a damper on what should have been a great day. That said, our memory of this restaurant was good enough that we returned again this year. In light of the problems we had last year, my girlfriend called the spa ahead of time and asked if we, as patrons (not overnight guests) on the property, could drive our vehicle to the restaurant. The people at the Fairmont Orchid assured her we could. You can almost see it comin', can't cha? We drive in and ask security about obtaining a map. Security wanted to know where we were going. I told him the restaurant. He directed us to the Mauna Lani spa area and told us to take the "nature trail" to the restaurant. Ok. We are a group of three women...two in their 60's and me in my 50's. We have an afternoon appointment. We don't want to hike. It's hot. It's humid. We just want to eat lunch. So having been assured by the Fairmont we can drive to the restaurant, we leave the Mauna Lani spa area and attempt to drive directly to the restaurant. We are within spitting distance of our lunch destination when we encounter a gate. The sign at the gate says, "Private Parking Club Members & Restaurant Patrons ONLY". Well, hey, that's us...we're restaurant patrons; but how do you get the gate to open?? My girlfriend calls the restaurant. Contrary to what the sign says, they tell us we are not allowed to park in the lot. They give us the "park and walk the trail" spiel. They will not open the gate to let us in. About the time we're reaching maximum annoyance, a vehicle goes through the gate....we tailgate him in. What do we see? Lots of empty parking in the lot. That hurdle behind us, we anticipate a nice, relaxing lunch. Right away we noticed the menu had changed from last year. We ordered three different lunch items to share between us....eggplant sandwich, the ahi sandwich special, and the tomato mozzarella salad. This place is not inexpensive so our expectations are up. The salad, at $14, would not feed a small child. There are three small slices of mozzarella and an equal number of bland tomato slices with a small number of greens. The $19 ahi sandwich had a very nice piece of meat perfectly seared. Unfortunately, it arrived with slimy lettuce that wasn't fully clean. This was pointed out to the waitress, and she brought us a plate with additional lettuce. The eggplant sandwich was meh. The wait staff were very attentive and very nice. The 'on the beach' atmosphere is splendid. The food, sad to say, was lacking...especially given the high price point. We fought to get in and now wish we'd just gone elsewhere.

Not a better combination than Sonny Lim on the slack key guitar and a mai tai made by bartender Bey. So if you're in the neighborhood on Sunday evenings, this is the place to be.

One of the best meals I have ever had with my family, which includes two toddler daughters, ages 2 and 3 years. Anyone who has toddlers would understand that good meals are hard to come by. The guitarist and the lawn out in front of the restaurant kept our girls entertained and calm. The waitstaff was terrific, and our waiter even brought out special plates of avocado just for the kids. beautiful locale. Sunset photos, whales spouting right offshore for our view. Completely magical experience, and the food was delicious.

This place is not closed but they are only open Thursday through Sunday. I have eaten here for lunch and dinner and the food is really good for the island. The scallops were delicious and wow the mud pie is enough dessert to feed everyone there. I was a little disappointed in the steaks but we are use to Firebird's steak which are top notch. The steaks were still good but I think there fish dish was probably better. They raise cattle on the island but it appears they don't cook it since most of it gets shipped off the island. Our waiter was excellent and very attentive. The view is beautiful but we did have to battle a few pesky flies since we were sitting outside and the ancient Hawaiian fish ponds are near by. Also, a great place to walk after dinner and/or watch the sun set.

Yelp could add a 6th star for Napau. It earned it. It has a modern Poly barscape with tables that overlook a slamming awesome sunset beach. It wasn't just show. The cuisine was goodness from the island goddess of, well, whoever the Hawaiian god of food goodness would be... Maybe the god called, "Kanieatanotherhelping". Calamari, swordfish, martinis for us. Loved it with an super friendly staff.

Atmosphere is wonderful. Tucked back right off then beach. My husband and I got the calamari and Ahi sashimi for an appetizer and the calamari was awesome. The Ahi was okay, we've been spoiled at Ulu at the four seasons resort. The filet was amazing I would highly suggest it. The sea bass my husband got was not good tho. It was tough. You HAVE to get the mudslide cake (to share). I'd go back, but would skip the sea bass.

What a pleasant discovery this restaurant was! Just a few minutes walk (south) of the Mauna Lani (on a mostly unlit path), Napua is a calm oasis: fantastic food, excellent service and the most appropriate ambience we have found on the Big Island. The calamari is sensational and prepared unlike any we had ever had before - amazing sauce, not tough at all. Salad seemed fresher than ones elsewhere. The seared Ahi could have been cooked a bit more for my taste (I like sashimi, but if it;s that rare you need a sauce if some sort to go with the fish). The wine list is small but interesting and they had excellent wines by the glass. Live guitar music which wasn't intrusive was not the obvious hawaiian traditional, but nevertheless it hit the sweet spot and felt right.

I wish I had been able to give this restaurant five stars because the food was good, but there are aspects to the restaurant that need improving. Considering that the dinner entrees are over $35 the staff should have a better handle on creating a nice ambiance. The person who greeted and seated us was not very polite, and of course, one's first impression of a place is created by the greeter. Second, there were two sets of competing music playing during dinner which was really really annoying. Recorded music was playing in the restaurant at the same time that a singer was performing live. The live music was way too loud. On the plus side, the food was excellent and the view absolutely perfect. Wait staff was also good. Bathrooms needed cleaning.

I ate there last week on vacation. I have been going to Mauna Lani for over 20 years and was happy to hear about a new restaurant option. Take a walk at sunset from the hotel to the condo-beach and you'll find what used to be casual dining converted into fine dining ( with a casual atmosphere). The location is great. They have a great wine list and short but adequate menu for all tastes. I had the 16 OZ Ribeye which was outstanding. I also had a killer green salad with local greens (the best part of any meal on the big island). The staff prefer you to make a reservation although we did not. I will be back.

After spending the afternoon on the beach, some friends and I decided to stay for dinner. The guava ribs are fantastic and the cocktails are lip-smacking! Staff was great and accommodated the 2 kids in our group. Can't beat the location either!

If you are looking for a quite relaxing dinner with an incredible view, this is it. With only 20 or so tables you get the personalized attentive service you would hope and the food was great. I can't understand how anyone would give less than five stars, it was the best meal and drinks we had on the island. Only complaint some people might have is that it is a long dinner, but why would you be in a hurry to get out of there. Have another Mai Tai, enjoy the quite live music in the background and soak it all in. It does not get any better than hear.

Great meal. Calamari (steak, not legs), apuha'a salad, ribeye, Ono, island cobbler were delicious. Great service and magnificent band on Saturday night (Kahulanui). A little gem at the Mauna Lani resort.

Excellent food and service. This is far different than any other restaurant in a similar price range on the island since it is small and quiet. There was a musician playing most of the time we were there. If you are staying at either the Mauna Lani or the Fairmont then you can get a shuttle to take you there. The spinach salad and the Mahi Mahi were very tasty.

Had the most wonderful evening here. In large part due to the musician and the lovely service. Absolutely outstanding ambiance. I wasn't very hungry and only had a salad, which was quite good. I really appreciated the nod to local and sustainable food. I plan to go back this same trip.

Fabulous atmosphere with a view across the bay! We've tried on numerous occasions to like the food here and find something that warrants a pricey lunch (without cocktails)... but despite the view, the friendly waitress, the food is more than weak! I ordered fish tacos... said they were on flour tortillas, they came on corn tortillas that were falling apart and cold. It was obvious they hadn't been warmed up. 2 tiny bite size pieces of fish ( that tasted like they hadn't removed the blood line) a few sprinkles of cabbage, a teaspoon of tomato salsa and that was it! Really cheap and really weak. The salad my husband ordered wasn't much better. I realize that ingredients are more expensive here but come on.... cabbage & lettuce, tomato? You can certainly do a lot more for the $$ then any of the lunches I have experienced there. Very very disappointing. Try the fish tacos in Kawaihae at the Kohala Diner! They are excellent and only $12.

I went here with my parents and grandmother. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. I had the opa fish special with kalua pork croquette. . .yummmmm. I would definitely recommend this to friends and family. This was probably the best restaurant we went to during our stay on the Big Island. Don't get the mud pie dessert, though. It was really just a big mound of ice cream. It was good, but the tropical crumble was much better. The place wasn't too crowded. The decor was simple and elegant. The service was great.
