If you want the BEST Huli Huli Chicken/ BBQ Ribs in your whole entire life, GJ's is definitely the spot! Everything is made so fresh on the smoker grill, and served with perfection. You can either buy a whole chicken/Rack or simply order by the plate. Trust me, you'll want to order a whole chicken, its sooooo worth it! The flavors of the chicken is so savory and the meat literally falls off the bone, its so good! There are other choices as far as pastry desserts, it definitely compliments your entree! Owners are VERY friendly and nice, and always so grateful for their customers. Definitely an island thing. I will forever crave GJ's huli huli chicken!!

The best barbecue I've had in my life, anywhere. I've got enough grey hairs and travel miles to have had a pretty broad taste of barbecue. Nothing comes close to GJ's. They're a little hard to find since they wander and set up in several spots around the island. They do their barbecuing in the bed of an old truck that's been converted into a trailer that is filled with coals. They set up a little tent nearby. If you're downwind, they're easy to find... actually, they're hard to avoid: something about their smell reaches into your primitive carnivore brain and drags you in. I normally get my dose on Friday in Kawaihae (the Blue Dragon's parking lot). Thursday in Hawi.... other days, ask a local. You're guaranteed to end up in a happy protein coma. If you're into beer, grab a bag of their home-made pork rinds - they fit together perfectly.

Very interesting store with some standard Filipino grinds. This review is not about that. On Friday in Kawaihae, Saturday in Honokaa, and Sunday at the parking lot in their Kamuela location, they run a Huli chicken stand! If you don't know what this is, check out the pictures. Some of the tastiest bbq/smoked chicken and spare ribs we've found on the Big Island and we've looked long and hard.

The parking lot bbq is probably some of the finest fare a carnivore will ever encounter. Honestly, their lunch plates definitely factored in to my decision to move to the Big Island. This is NOT to be missed!!!

We were on vacation and needed to do laundry. Nearest washerette was in Waimea/Kamuela. Hubby decides to take care of this for me (such a nice hubby). While waiting for clothes to dry, he looks for food (he's always looking for food). His nose leads him to GJ's outdoor BBQ. Hubby (in true hunter fashion) arrives at hotel room with bag of clean laundry in one hand; other hand carrying a doubled up plastic grocery bag with 1/2 BBQ chicken--no "to go" containers available. I think it's a little strange, but what the heck. I'm starving, so while hubby puts clothes away, I dive into the bag and tear off a piece of chicken...then the skies part and angels sing and I start making nom nom noises. It was all I could do to leave enough for hubby. I think this was the most amazing chicken I've ever eaten in my life and the best meal we had during the whole vacation!

Such awesome BBQ! Highly recommend to anyone driving by to stop and pick up a tasty meat plate. Huge portion, delicious food and reasonably priced. Best lunch plate that I have had on the islands hands down.
