Without a doubt, the best shave ice on the Big Island. Homemade syrups make them special, generous helpings of it make them flavorful. There is ice cream for those who don't love shave ice, but I've never tried it. Also, this is one place that offers azuki beans with your ice. You gotta try it!

We are regulars here, and enjoy their shave ice and ice-cream. I like all of the tropical flavors of shave ice but I almost always eat the ice-cream. Soo creamy! Service is superb-- welcoming, and very patient even when the line is long. No tables, just a bench if you are lucky enough to get it. I always see just one person behind the counter, and there's always a line of people waiting. The longest I've ever waited is 10-15 minutes, and it's worth the wait every time. Great stop for beach days!

Giant Giant, big as your head shave ice for a low price! Super fine shaved quality and super friendly service. Delicious syrups! Only a bench for seating, but worth it. And they have different sizes. The small is huge. $5.50 for a big and small!

This place is awesome! I took my family here for treats every day when we stayed in Waikoloa. The lines can get long - but it's totally worth it! It's perfection in a bowl... And with a scoop of ice cream and a snow cap?!?! Amazing! My favorite was a scoop of volcano ice cream with Haupia-flavored snow cone. My husband loved vanilla ice cream with root beer snow cone. No matter what you pick, it's going to be yummy. Sidenote... My husband insisted we tried another place while down in Kona. It had nothing on Anuenue. They only take cash - there is an ATM at the market next door. Also, there is a bench (that's always full) for seating - that's it. So be prepared to either stand in the heat or sit in your car.

Very good shave ice - the portion is BIG!!!

Drove 20 mins for this shave ice from the Waikoloa Village. TOTALLY WORTH IT! $2.50 for a small. A small is PLENTY. I don't know how you could finish a large without having it melt all over you. So many flavors and options to choose from. My son had: root beer, cotton candy and watermelon. Weird mix, but it was good. I had pineapple, passion fruit and blue hawaii. Perfect Island treat. great deal!

Great place to stop on the way down the mountain from Hawi. Great ice cream, Ethan was awesome

  • Jackie T.

This is the place to get shave ice in Kona. They offer what seems like 30-40 flavors for shave ice, in addition to a selection of 10+ specialty and seasonal ice creams. My favorite has to be the volcano ice cream. Banana ice cream with oreos and a little strawberry sauce. It appears to be an odd combination but it works on every level and I don't normally eat oreos. For the more ambitious, pair the banana ice cream with banana and strawberry shave ice.

  • Katy W.

So so so so yummy! I had the chunky white chocolate ginger ice cream... Beyond delicious!! There was a bit of a line...but totally worth it. (cash only)

    (5)
  • Amelia S.

Really good ice cream, shaved ice, and smoothies but hard to find. The ice cream flavors are good and plentiful, and they now offer gelato (only 1 flavor). This is a popular spot, judging by the long line at the counter (also, only 1 person was working, so the line was slow). We will definitely be back for another frozen treat.

  • Kelli M.

Y'all I gotta tell you, this was some pretty darn good shave ice. I couldn't believe how long the line was (30 minutes, wow!) however the cool shave ice was worth it. Such small little shavings of ice and sooooo many flavors to choose from! Such a great deal too, ($2.50 for a small, $4.00 for a large!) I recommend it, the service was a quick and the workers were so very friendly!

    (4)
  • Jaclyn M.

Yum. Got a few different flavors with delicious mac nut ice cream inside. So good! The ice they use could be a tad bit finer, but the service and flavors are awesome. Get you some.

  • Sam S.

Is this the best place? No. Is it good? Yes So I'll tell you why five stars: The first thing is value. Its not very expensive and you get a good portion size. Let's face it, lot of sugar is not good for anyone. This leads me to my second praise. At face value, all the flavors look like the run of the mill artificial flavoring but this place's is not overbearing. The fresh lime juice is a must with your shaved ice. So so delicious. Third mention is the lime juice if i did not make that clear. There's an ice truck down the street but lines are usually long because their process is limited (by space & process). I would definitely come back here to avoid lines. Another thing I'd like to mention is the ice itself, when presented to you, the ice seems almost chunky, harshly cold in your mouth and on your teeth ... But it isn't. Great place. Will return

While cruising around on the island, one of the pit stops has to be Hawaiian shave ice. It's refreshing especially on a hot day. Anuenue is conveniently located on Hwy 270 if you are heading to the northern tip of Big Island or to the Kamehameha statue. The older gentleman at the shop was very nice and patient with the indecisive customers like myself. I wanted most of the flavors but finally settled on three - Ginger Lemongrass, POG (Passion fruit, Orange & Guava), and Li Hing Mui. Yum! Great mix in my opinion. He suggested me drizzle some condensed milk on top. Nah I'm good :-) The only problem was that there wasn't much space to hang around. I prefer sitting in the shade while having my icy treat but there was only one bench next to the shop. Luckily, the group there had just finished and stood up.

All flavored we tried were fantastic! Service is great, ingredients are fantastic. Lovely experience after a swim and the heat of big island.

  • Todd G.

Best shave ice my family had on the Big Island. Superfine ice shaved from a block not "shaved" in a blender. Portions are immense.

    (5)
  • Alaskan M.

Ordered the large shaved ice for three bucks with up to three flavors. Service was fast and good flavor selection. I liked that they weren't shy with the syrups. I've had shaved ice before and they didn't cover everything with the syrup, this place piled it on. Good place for shaved ice

    (5)
  • Lizzie D.

Cant go to Hawaii and not get any shaved ice. Cheap and delicious. How can that get any better??? Fast, great flavors and options (including ice cream). Wish I lived closer.

    (5)
  • Alice C.

Really tasty shaved ice with a wide variety of flavors! The lavender lemonade was especially delicious, but I also enjoyed the li hing mui flavor and li hing mui powder on top (can't you tell that I LOVE li hing mui). Minus one star since the old guy working here gets a little confused and wants you tell him each ingredient individually, so if you tell him things in the wrong (unpublished) order then you're out of luck.

I don't even know what a snow cone is after visiting this place. As a mainlander, I was expecting a glorified snowcone. To my surprise, I got so much more! It is literally shaved ice. As in, there is a giant block of ice and they shave it down to shaved ice, so it has a different texture than your average snow cone. The line is ridiculously long though. We waited for about 20 minutes but the wait was well worth it! They also serve ice cream here and you can actually get both shaved ice and ice cream so, of course, i did that. I got the toasted coconut ice cream with shaved ice on top and for the syrups, I got blue vanilla, hawaiian punch and pink lemonade! It was so good but the best part is when you get to the bottom and the shave ice and ice cream mix together. Absolutely perfect for this hot weather! No wonder people have such good things to say about this place! It's a definite must, just prepare to wait in a long ass line!

  • Jacki C.

This is the closest shave ice place to Waikoloa and worth the drive. Very inexpensive and ono. We will likely make it a regular stop each trip to the BI.

    (5)
  • Allie W.

I could not understand how SHAVED ICE was such a big deal. We went there after lunch and chose from their million flavors. I chose birthday cake, because I had to know what in gods name birthday cake shaved ice tasted like. The server suggested I get half and half, just in case I didn't like the birthday cake, so I also got passion fruit. I wish I had gotten all birthday cake!!! It was SO good. The shaved ice is so smooth, it almost tastes like polish water ice (any jersey readers out there?) I highly recommend this as a sweet treat!

  • Emmy Z.

Great place to get shaved ice. I love how there are so many flavors available. The prices are really good, too. I'll definitely make this place a stop anytime I'm nearby.

    (5)
  • Loves G.

The ice is shaved very fine, which makes it great, but on this day, we waited over 30 minutes to get a shaved ice. There was over 10 people in line and only ONE girl making the shave ice, cashiering and taking the orders. OH M Gee... it was crazy. It was super hot and waiting in line for over 30 minutes was not really worth it. Syrups are okay. Nothing special. I had the blue vanilla and strawberry. Pretty basic and just okay. Would I wait again to eat this shave ice. NO, I would not. Sorry Anuenue.... you need to get more help to make your establishment more efficient.

    (3)
  • Mandi B.

I love this place. Its super close to where we stay on the Big Island and with better prices than anywhere else for shaved ice, and you get up to 3 flavors. Its ice and sugar people, $6 is extortion. Save your money and come here to pay $3. =) Also, they have really delicious ice cream you can add to your shaved ice for only $2 more. The bf always gets the tahitian vanilla ice cream, which is very good... BUT the Lilikoi cheesecake ice cream is amazing. The ice cream has the most amazing texture and flavor. Anuenue also has a Li Hing Mui flavor for you shaved ice. When on the island, I get just about anything I can with Li Hing Mui. A must try if you haven't had it before!!

    (5)
  • Ej F.

Great dessert option after dining at Cafe Pesto. Real shave ice (not big snow cone like chunks of ice) and a nice variety of flavors including ginger lychee, lavender lemonade, and citrus mint. I had the POG (Passion Orange Guava, my fav) and Lemongrass Ginger. They actually go well together.

    (4)
  • Christine P.

The ice cream here is great! The volcano ice cream is wonderful! My husband got just the lavender lemonade shave ice which tasted wonderful. The guy behind the counter is a very no nonsense kind of guy. Cash only.

    (4)
  • monica w.

Best ice cream on the island- a must go!

    (5)
  • Courtney W.

This place is absolutely awesome! We stopped here just about everyday after long hours spent in the sun and the sea. The shaved ice comes in so many flavors, my favorite is POG! POG is seriously one of the best things on the island! I also had quite a few milkshakes and those are outstanding as well, not too rich but with the perfect amount of ice cream and milk. The owner often mans the counter and is super friendly. There can be long lines, especially when it's hot out!

    (5)
  • James H.

I drove by this place on a hot spring day and saw a line of people at the window so I figured they must know what they're doing. So I turned around, stood in line, and ordered a mango and lychee shave ice. It costs $3 including tax that covers up to 3 flavors and it's worth every last penny. Best shave ice ever! the shavings are so fine and the generous flavorings make it a slam dunk. Now I know what real shave ice should be like. Just a few more days left in our trip, but I'll likely be back before heading home to the mainland.

  • Sharon H.

So we asked the locals on the Kona side, "where can we get some ice shave?" and the answer was this tiny shop about a 15 minute drive from the Waikoloa resort area. We were there on a late Saturday aftternoon and happily our group of five, including one thirsty 5-year-old, was next in line so the wait was not too long. Nice surprises: incredibly soft texture of the ice and new, interesting flavors. I opted for the lemongrass ginger mixed with my standby favorites, lychee and melona. Ono! The lemongrass had just the right citrusy notes to offset the overly sweet lychee and melona, and together, the flavors popped happily on my tongue and slid smoothly down my parched throat. Kudos to the shave ice master for getting the right balance of syrup to ice. No waste there and still enough slurpy goodness to enjoy at the very end. Worth the $3 price tag. Only reason for four instead of five stars -- the shave ice master was a bit grumpy, which sort of sapped the fun of the experience. But then again, who wouldn't be a tad irritable when you're close to pau hana time and you see a long line of folks who can't decide what to order?

    (4)
  • Mitch N.

Not Oahu good with the likes of Waiola's or dare I say Matsumoto's (As I really don't like it there). But for the greater Kona area, this is one of the better places to go. Small, but fast service. Lots of flavors to choose from. I really enjoyed the lemongrass ginger and lychee.

    (4)
  • Kevin C.

A group of us were staying at a house nearby so we stopped by here everyday and maybe more than once a day on some days. This is probably the best shave ice in all of the Big Island because we tried to hit them all in Kona and Hilo and they didn't compare. Perhaps there are other really good ones in other parts of the island, but this Anuenue compared favorably to the best ones in Oahu. Oh finely shaved goodness. I wish you would open up a place to sell me your syrupy, slushy nectar of god in NYC.

    (5)
  • Michael G.

Simply fantastic shave ice. Only thing that would put it over the top would be slightly later hours so you could get an ice after dinner at Kohala Burger and Taco (which is right next door).

    (5)
  • George R.

First of all, I must admit my preference to patronize local small businesses over large chains whenever possible, so I tend to overlook things like long waits from short staffing . The service was friendly and patient, and we collected our order after awhile. Good thing we're on vacation .

    (3)
  • Vi L.

I'm in Hawaii so of course I have an excuse to get dessert everyday. Of course that means shaved ice! I came here after eating lunch at Kawaihae Kitchen. I went for a small cup because I was still full from lunch. Small came with a choice of 2-3 syrup flavors. I chose banana, passionfruit, and guava. I think my favorite was banana. Guava was also good too. My least favorite was the passionfruit because it wasn't as sweet or flavorful as other places. Still did the trick though. I left happy and satisfied.

  • Marie B.

I got hooked on shave ice after my visit to Kauai a few years back. After having been to the Big Island many times and never stopping for shave ice, this was the trip to finally try it. Excellent shave ice! At $2.50, the small is huge! The first time, I went with the lemongrass ginger and coconut. The second time I had passion fruit, pineapple, and coconut. All flavors have been wonderful and refreshing. Whenever my family and I return to the island, we will be stopping here (probably multiple times!).

    (5)
  • Corinne C.

BEST shave ice on the western side of Hawaii. Perfectly fluffy texture soaking up all the syrup. I got "shave ice" at a place in Kona and they used an ice crusher...I was so sad :(. The drive up here was worth it. Be decadent like me and get TWO scoops of mac nut ice cream at the bottom!

    (5)
  • Dana S.

We stuck to the shave ice here, and it was one of our favorite shave ice places on the Big Island. The texture was great and they have a great selection of flavors, tho the syrups were a little too sweet. There's only one size, and it's huge, so you might want to consider splitting one. Definitely get it with ice cream on the bottom.

    (4)
  • Brie L.

Tiny little window shop with great flavors and island ice cream. Cash only and bring wipes for your hands (and possibly the bench in front). Come here as often as we can whenever we are on the island.

    (5)
  • Alexia J.

Yummmmy! Must get the shaved ice with ice cream! Kind of a random location but worth the trip up from the hilton!

    (5)
  • Justin K.

Love their shave ice Great taste Must go on every trip to big island

    (5)
  • Chad Y.

What a find! Nothing beats a day at the beach, then ending that day with a shave ice cone! Anuenue Shave Ice is certainly home to a great cone that hits the spot! The ice is finely shaved as if the ice was collected from freshly fallen snow. The syrups are decent with the Melona and POG flavors hitting the mark. The strawberry was one I'd pass on. I never thought I'd ever say this about a shave ice cone, but talk about a lot of syrup! I finished the ice before I ran out of syrup! Definitely off the beaten path, but certainly a good place to visit!

    (3)
  • Nancy O.

Pretty good but not Hawaiian Ice cones in Kona good. I tried the haupia flavor with vanilla ice cream and it was just okay.

    (3)
  • Irina Z.

Best shave ice on the island. Worth the drive up & the ensuing brain freeze. Get the ice cream inside your shave ice (you can pick which flavor!!) and the sweet red beans on the bottom. Flavors like li hing mui and lychee are a little more subtle (read: not overpoweringly sweet) than your regular strawberry fare.

    (5)
  • Geordy O.

Best shave ice in south kohala

    (4)
  • Betty E.

Best shave ice in three islands, hands down. Cleanest, truest, most natural-tasting flavors. Man working the counter was very nice and helpful.

    (5)
  • Mike F.

Best shave ice on the island. Get it with a scoop of ice cream and a snow cap. Mmmm. The owner has been there for 15 years. He can get a little moody but don't let it bug you.

    (5)
  • Dawn S.

Delicious macadamia nut ice cream! Wish there was more syrup on their shave ice.

    (4)
  • Paula T.

Holy DELICIOUS. Best treat I've ever had. Ask for (in this order, from the bottom up), Tahitian Vanilla ice cream, adzuki beans and shaved ice with your flavor of choice. You will not be let down!

    (5)
  • D C.

Ok. Not the best. Don't waste your gas

    (3)
  • Victoria W.

Hm... I think we may have come on a bad day or something. Terrible service. The person working there was incredibly grumpy the entire time. I asked a simple question about one of the flavors and he nearly snarled the reply. We should have left right then, but instead we ordered one regular ice cream for $4. It was decent, but way too pricey for the small portion of ice cream which wasn't even homemade.

    (1)
  • Marlena T.

Best shave ice ever. Citrus mint, ginger lemongrass and lavender lemonade with red beans. Super ono.

    (5)
  • Jillian P.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my god, it is hands down, one of thee best shave ice places I've ever experienced. Funny though . . . Because I usually never get shave ice. Hahaha. My absolute favorite is their volcano ice cream. Gahhhhh. Talk about TO DIE FOR. It's one of the only places I know of that I can still get volcano ice cream! I can't wait to go back when I get home! This place is always PRIME right after the beach! It's always so hot down Kawaihae side and the beach, that this place always, perfectly hits the spot. It's perfect to because there's a little bench to just chill and eat your ice cream/shave ice on. If not that, there's always the sidewalk. :) I love this place and will ALWAYS recommend it. :)

    (5)
  • Heather H.

I needed my shaved I've fix and this definitely did it for me. The only reason I am giving a 4 star instead of a 5 star is the quantity you receive. Not the largest amount I have seen for 3 dollars. However, great shaved I've and flavors.

    (4)
  • J J.

Never miss an opportunity for a yummy shave ice here. Tons of unique flavors. The new one i tried to day was Li Hing Muy. We love shave ice with ice cream on the bottom.

    (4)
  • Shal J.

This was one of the only non-hotel places open on Thanksgiving! We found it while we were aimlessly driving around the area. The guy was very friendly and hooked us up with his fav 3-fruit flavor combo and I added ice cream. The serving is huge and was of course more than enough for the 2 of us. A fun little stop - we had to get our shave ice fix somewhere, and this fit the bill!

    (4)
  • Patrick W.

What's not to like about flavored ice? After a hot afternoon trekking the north side of the big island this fun lil place came as a big relief. So many great great flavors to choose from..brought me back to a time when Mr. Frosty Ice Machine was churning out a similar desert. Near intersection of 270 and 19 is a cute row of shops and restaurants. Pick and choose which diner to eat, but make room for this treat. Parking is accessible front and back of these shops.

  • A H.

Tried this place twice. It was really good. I love, love, love the coconut ice cream (toasted?) The macadamia nut ice cream was good. I think I tasted a slight hint of banana (which I am not privy to, but that's me). Ice cream had the perfect consistency, super creamy and thick. I got the kiddie size because I wanted to try two flavors (just a hint). The shaved ice is thirst quenching. I tried 3 flavors, but fell in love with 2. The three I tried were lychee, blackberry, and melon. Lychee and blackberry were perfect, not too syrupy sweet. The melon was okay, but the color turned me off (bright green). Anyway, I definitely would go back. The ice cream is the best I have had because one of my favorite flavors is coconut.

  • Angie N.

The best locals shave ice in Kona. A welcomed sight, just up a few miles from the fancy resorts. Make sure to get yours with adzuki beans, a scoop of your fave ice cream and a snow cap. Must. have. snow. cap. ONOLICIOUS!!!

    (5)
  • Dan C.

Best Shave Ice that we had on the Big Island! It's so light and delicious! The staff is so friendly and the price is great. A must have if your in the mood for Shave Ice.

  • Eccezionale M.

HOW CAN YOU GIVE A BAD RATING TO AVENUE............... You cannot find another one like it at least within a 10 miles radio. It is good, tasty and refreshing. It is our stop every time we came to the Big Island. NOTHING ELSE TO SAY ABOUT IT. IT IS GREAT AND YOU CAN ASLO SEAT ON THE BECH JUST OUTSIDE WATCHING PEOPLE PASSING BY..........

Last day in Hawaii and found this small gem. Tried the P.O.G. flavor (passion, orange, guava). I wish there were shaved ice places like this in LA!

  • Jesse W.

4/12/08: This place hits the spot! We noticed it as we were passing thru Kawaihae on our way up to Hawi for lunch. We arrived around 4pm later that afternoon after a long hot dry afternoon. While it was my wife's idea, I didn't hesitate to help her tackle her strawberry and lychee shaved ice. They are very generous with the syrup (to the point that our mouths were red from the strawberry syrup) and piled on the shaved ice. Excellent and plan to be back...

    (4)
  • Jason J.

this place gets a 1 on accord of how much they give you. normally i would give it a 2, but it gets a 3 b/c it's the only one for probably 10 miles. other than that it's just normal shaved ice for $2.50.

    (3)
  • Scott K.

The best shave ice in the west side of the big island. Only reason why I gave it a 4 star rating is because the ice is not packed enough to hold the syrup. Oh, btw, not even the owner knows what street it's on. Good luck finding this place but if you do, you won't be disappointed.

    (4)
  • Shirley P.

Ono. Ono. Ono. The best on the island! Must have with coconut ice-cream and snow cap. And the Shave Ice Queen ROCKS!!!

    (5)
  • Ava S.

It's weird that there's not that many shaved ice places on the Big Island. Finally stumbled across this place when we couldn't find the Original Big Island Shave Ice Co. It's not the best place, but it's decent. $2.50 for a small and $3.00 for a regular. Prices include 3 flavors of syrup. +$2 for ice cream (get it!). The ice isn't as soft as I like it, but the consistency is finer than what you would find in a snow cone. Typical syrup flavors (POG, guava, mango, etc). The toasted coconut ice cream and mango sorbet are absolutely divine. YUM. Highly recommend adding ice cream.

    (4)
  • Bruce O.

Awesome. Get it with Tahitian vanilla inside! There's usually a line but it's quick. Worth the trip; there are other places nearby for lunch then get dessert here!

    (5)
  • Renee H.

CASH ONLY! Super ono shave ice & friendly service. They have a lot of flavors to choose from & their ice cream is really good. They are cash only so come prepared. I'm so glad we found this place to stop by on a hot day!
