    Glad we waded back further off the street to find this place. We were actually looking to eat at a sushi place closer to the street but it seemed like service was slow, or at least seating people seemed to be taking awhile. My uncle was pleased to hear it is part of the family that owns Teshima's. Didnt make it there this trip, but really enjoyed the food here. We sampled lots of menu items and everyone was very pleased with the food ( girls didn't want their Spam, so I got lucky with extra servings!) Whatever you do, add an order of the tempura fries! We devoured two orders of them. Everyplace should have these on the menu! No alcohol here. We probably didn't need any more after the trough of Mai tais we just finished up drinking. Get off the sidewalk and come try this family run and super friendly place.

    It is an amazing place if you want a bowl of warm soup and delicious Saimin. It is so good and the price is affordable. It is especially good for Asians traveler who misses home food and just wants something warm desperately. Highly recommend the Saimin and sukiyaki!

    A,little gem tucked away in the coconut grove shopping center. Inside are pictures of multiple generations of family. The food is Hawaiian/Japanese and very authentic. They offer Miso and Kim chee with fish and rice options. The tea is excellent. Very un crowded and a great change from the usual tourist places on Alli drive.

    The sukiyaki and the tempura are fabulous! The owner holds true to the namesake, Fumi, who was a wonderful woman that brought the community of Kona together. Fumi's is a great place for traditional local Japanese dishes and friendly service. I would recommend this place to everyone!

    Ate here for breakfast and will definitely be back soon! My boyfriend and I had the Samurai breakfast and it was perfect. Very friendly staff and very helpful with deciding what was best to get. Want to go back for dinner or lunch to try out different items on the menu. Price was great and we left full (which is always a good thing!)

    Been in the The Big Island for a week and this is the best morning meal I had period. Food is tasty and original with a local touch. A must do before you leave find it right behind the overrated Lava Java.

    Great customer service and food was good! We were the last customers and stayed beyond closing time and they were so sweet. Had steak/shrimp, pork chop/shrimp and monster saimin. So ono! Lots of little Japanese extra tsukemono and namasu on side. Will return!

    Excellent service and a welcoming atmosphere. The other Japanese restaurant down the way was way too crowded and noisy. This one was homey feeling and had well prepared food and an Ohana atmosphere. I'm going again.

    Food is carefully prepared and thoughtfully presented . Little dishes of Asian pickles and cabbage come with bento box beef lean and tasty noodles are fresh and cooked perfectly. Large selection of soft drinks and juices. Dining room is clean and decorated with a minimalist Asian flare Highly recommend Reasonable prices too!

    Wow! If you're in town and don't want to make the trek up the hill to Teshima's stop in at Fumi's Kitchen. Smaller menu, but the quality of the food is on par with the restaurant up the hill. The restaurant isn't too big but feels cozy rather than crowded. There is indoor or outdoor seating, but seeing as it's right off the usually blazing hot Alii drive indoor seating would probably be preferable. Fumi's offers a tasty selection of some Japanese and local comfort food. Most dishes are served with sides - rice, miso, nabemono and tsukemono for the combos, rice, nabemono/tsukemono for plates. Everything tastes wonderful. The only reason I knocked off a star was the wait for our food was a tad (just a tad) long, but if you don't mind waiting the food will be totally worth it.

    I would come back. Stopped here for a quick and easy breakfast. it was simple and done well. Nothing complicated, just simple straightforward breakfast food. Prices were great. I want to come back and give their lunch menu a try. Our waitress was fantastic. She was the only server there, but was smiling and accommodating! Thanks!

    Very good first try. We had the Hamburger Steak, Kalbi Ribeye, Sashimi and Shrimp Tempura. The Kalbi Ribeye was definitely the star of the night, though.

    We had dinner tonight and it was very very good. Great service, comfortable atmosphere, the food was excellent . Homestyle japanese food. I had the pork chop/tempura combo. The 4 of us tried something different and we were all happy

    My family and I ate here 2 times while we were staying in Kona. The food was good and seemed like it was made with high quality ingredients. We had the Teriaki Beef, Yakitori Chicken and Yakisoba Noodles. All were good.

    Before I start, I have to say the service was quick, the food was brought out fast, and everyone was very friendly. The restaurant has the Aloha spirit. But I'm mostly at a restaurant for the food and that's where it's all gone wrong. We had a group of 8 and we ordered a bit of everything from Sukikyaki to Panko Porkchop to Kalbi Steak to the bentos. Portions were Hawaiian generous but all the food lacked flavor. Now salty is a flavor but that's not what we're talking about. Here's the run down: Beef Kalbi - tasted like grilled and burnt soy sauce with a hint of ginger. It lacked the complexity you'd expect from a kalbi short beef rib (think garlic, a bit of sugar caremlized, think a bit of sesame seed) Sukiyaki - the broth needed a ton of work. The broth lacked the richness you'd expect beyond just soysauce and water. It needs to taste like the broth at the end of a HotPot. This tasted like water and soy and the little amount of meat it cooked with. Panko Porkchops - It was just porkchop. NOt sure if it was slightly salted and panko crusted then fried, but the flavor wasn't there. tasted like plain pork out of the box. A little white wine seasoning or rice wine, a bit of white pepper, some garlic, and then kosher rock salt sprinkled would have helped. Bentos - these were probably the best. granted it wasn't a hawaiian plate lunch, it was a slice of different meats and spam of course and tamago. The bottom line, if this is what a 4.5 star on the Big Island is, we need to reevaluate the scoring as this is at best a 3 on the other islands. The pricing and atomsphere is too high for a 3 but since the service was excellent, that's where it stands.

    My wife and I went for dinner a few nights ago, and enjoyed it. Located next to Coconut Grove where Outback and Humpy's are located, Fumi's is in the same mall as Lava Java, at the opposite end from the Alii Drive side. Previously occupied by Okole Maluna, with Shiono Sushi close by, for some reason this mall has had a number of restaurants over the years. Fumi's roots are up mauka with Teshima's, a Kona institution. At any rate if you are from out of town you enter from the Kuakini Highway side, not the Alii Drive side, and park in the lot just north of Coconut Grove. It's right at the edge of the parking lot, you see it first when you enter the mall. They've done a nice job inside in what one might call classic Hawaii local style dining, and it is simple and clean. I had the ahi / shrimp tempura combo, and it was ok. Tempura was superb, the ahi a little oily. My wife had an ahi burger and substituted a salad for fries, and it was excellent. Our server was a sweet gal that had recently moved here from Montana and was friendly. I am looking forward to trying other items on the menu. There's no alcohol yet, and while I didn't ask I saw people brought in bottles, so I believe it is byob at present. Not sure if they had a kids menu either. I think at present this is a soft opening. I am especially eager to try them for breakfast after seeing the menu; always nice to have a new breakfast option here! As far as ambiance, we could have done without the tv and bizarre music videos playing. Personally I'd prefer Hawaiian slack key in the background, but that's just me. However I think they are in a slow opening mode and tweaking things, and hopefully they'll realize the importance of a relaxing ambiance for visitors that are seeking all things Hawaiian during their stay, as they won't survive without a healthy flow of tourists as well as locals. So all in all it was an enjoyable experience and we'll be back. We've had three japanese restaurants open in town in the past year and a half; the economy must be improving :)......

    A cozy place that draws locals and families. Service is nice, food is ok but not spectacular. I liked the sashimi (very fresh tuna) and the kalbi, but the yakisoba was so-so. Too much carrot.

    Fantastic tempura shrimp, miso and yakiudon. Chef Ron, Marielle, Su Jin & Cholae are wonderful. Family from the mainland loved every dish!

    Amazing food. A must chicken yakitori is great. Kids love saimin! We will be back for sure. We have been twice dinner and lunch. Food is fresh and very flavorful.

    We enjoyed this great restaurant! I'm happy we have decided to go here among the many options nearby. The food was very good. We had the sukiyaki and yakitori. The atmosphere was very relaxing. Good service.

    Not sure what all the hype is about this place. We read the Yelp reviews and decided to come to this place on our first night in Kona. This was branded as korean style japanese food. We had a few people order bentos, some ordered the sukiyaki, the pork chops, korean bbq. The food was neither japanese nor korean. Hawaiian style maybe? pork chop was soggy and without flavor, not seasoned well enough. On the other end, the sukiyaki was too salty, and the soup broth not what you would expect from a sukiyaki. Food seemed americanized and the place was actually packed surprisingly. This is also not really korean style japanese food. We have many of those places in LA. we would not come back, use caution when coming to this place.

    Just stopped in for dinner and could not have enjoyed it more! I had the pork chop and tempura shrimp dinner. They serve the main courses with soup, sweet cabbage, and pickled cucumbers, and this delicious dipping sauce for the shrimp and pork. You can mix them to your heart's content, and blending the flavors results in a very happy and satisfying experience. The pork was seasoned perfectly, yet you could still experience the flavor of the pork. Watching them deliver their trays loaded with food makes you really anticipate yours coming out! Part of good food is presentation, and this is the real deal. I saw another reviewer complain that this isn't a real Japanese restaurant. I don't know if it is or isn't, but if the food is great, who cares? Go. Enjoy.

    A casual restaurant, OK food, prices a bit high. This is an ideal spot for a bar (previous businesses in this location were bars), but there isn't any alcohol! Service was friendly, and knowledgeable about area.

    Fumi's Bento Box special was excellent. My husband had the beef teriyaki bowl special and that was very tasty also. Service was good and prices for lunch specials were very reasonable. Will be be to try breakfast!

    Wow what a great find!! We had the chicken sukiyaki, tempura fries, and the grilled ahi. All were so delicious!!! They even brought us some extra grilled fish because they thought our portion of ahi was small. It was super good too!! The service was excellent. We will definitely be back.

    It's only fair to mention that I am reviewing "Fumi's" but I have never been in "Fumi's"... BUT an associate of mine keeps bringing me to-go food from "Fumi's"... It usually is accompanied by an enthusiastic explanation of what I am about to eat. I can't remember the names of anything Iv'e eaten ... BUT I KNOW THIS... I have got to try this place for real next time I'm over that way. Cause it is good eating.

    We were excited to try this place due to the numerous good reviews but we were extremely disappointed. My wife got the sukiyaki and it smelled extremely "off" and didn't taste very good at all. The beef was extremely overcooked as well. Overall the ingredients seemed far from fresh and the flavor was not good. Sorry!

    I had the N.Y. Steak/shrimp tempura. It was so good. The meat was cooked perfectly well done the way I asked. And, I was surprised how thick the slices of sashimi were. It wasn't crazy expensive too. I don't know where they got their Chantilly cake. But that was bomb too. The service was good, she didn't really bother us which we like..

    Everything I've tried here has been fantastic! Their noodle dishes are savory and nicely portioned. I love tempura so I can get that too, along with sushi fare and local specialties. The saimin is excellent. Their box lunches are a super deal - a lot of variety if you want to taste different specialties. For now Fumi's is BYOB but that's not a problem. We go over to the ABC store and get sake and bring it over. The only thing I would change is how they bring out the food. So far I've eaten there twice and both times they've served one or two people first while the rest of the party waits for their food. Not a show stopper.

    been here a couple times - first time, my tempura was really oily so I didn't eat it and left hungry.. second time we went I tried the fish, the first piece I ate was really good, i was excited to eat the rest but the rest were once again really oily. I do like the atmosphere of the place and the staff as they are wonderful... although Teshima's and Fumi's are both owned and operated by the same family I would definitely drive to Teshima's instead.

    Two thumbs up for this relative newcomer to the Kona dining scene. Their menu is decidedly un-fussy, and the food is artfully prepared and presented. I had the grilled ahi and tempura combination which was top notch. Others in our party had the sukiyaki, miso butterfish and sweet-sour pork; they loved all of it.

    Good location with access to parking on the kuakini highway (inland) side of the mall. 10 tables with two booths and a six table outdoor area. 12 seat bar but no liquor yet. Probably a work in progress. Food is excellent we had the hamburger steak and the butterfish - misoyaki style (black cod for you non hawaii people) everything is tasty, presented japanese style. If you like teshimas in holualoa this is a good place for you. It's run by a teshima.

    Ron and Natasha gave us a sampling of their butterfish . . . It was gone before I had a chance to take a photo of it! Melted in your mouth, it was so good. My Korean stew was amazing, and I love the addition of the Korean kim chee! Congratulations, Ron! A dream come true, for everyone, too!

    Excellent food and the service is second to none. You get the real feeling of being family, even if it's your first time in the door. This family has been doing it right on the Big Island for generations. Tourist or local, this is a great offshoot of the original Teshima's up the mountain.

    FYI - Japanese but no sushi. Yelp steered us wrong on our search for sushi. I'm sure it's lovely but we had our hearts set and didn't stay.

    Fumi's is a casual Family-Style Japanese Korean LOCAL restaurant! Excellent comfort food, at a reasonable price, for being located in the heart of Kona. Service is warm, welcoming, and attentive. Ok so, now the food! Samurai Breakfast is a delicious twist on an omelette. Spam, nori, with some yummy shoyu(soy sauce)-sugar base, and green onions folded in. Their Yakitori Chicken hits the spot for sure! Flavor packs a punch, and the texture is a nice crisp, yet moist addiction. I can't seem to get enough of that. If you like Butterfish, try the Miso-Style. It will not disappoint. Most dishes come with sides, some of which are Miso Soup, Tsukemono(savory cabbage), Sunomono(sweet cucumbers)...pickled goodness. Don't ask, just try. They also serve hot tea to wash it all down. No alcohol yet, although it is in the works. You may BYOB, in the meantime. Bring yourself, your friends, your family! Enjoy. We do. SUPPORT LOCAL.
