Bridget and Bernard's is a hidden secret in Maui. It's located in the light industrial area of Kahului at the curve in the road. Bernard is a master chef from Switzerland who settled on Maui over 20 years ago after touring the globe as a chef. You can dine inside (5 tables) or in his garden (more than 5 tables.) Bottom line: Best rack of lamb. I had to force my bro in law from Hono to visit us on Maui to "try" Bernard's lamb. Understand that he is the type of guy who is super hypercritical about others' cooking as he figures he can make it better (true 99% of the time). The rack is served with potatoes au gratin and sautéed vegies; all home made of course. When bro took his first bite of the lamb, he closed his eyes in disbelief because it was so delicious. No more "Honolulu is the best" sarcasm anymore! On a week night (open Tues-Sat for dinner and Mon-Fri for lunch), my wife and I stop by for the Weinersnitzel, tomato/blue cheese salad and roetse(sp) potato pancake. We ordered mushroom gravy on the side as this older European couple sitting next to us did, so we had to copy them; we didn't regret it. The wine selection is small, but Bernard has a wide variety of German beer offered in short or tall (that's the only way to go) glasses. Whenever my friends from Sweden and Denmark come to visit, they want to "soko ga shiritai." Although they've lived in Hono for over 15 years, they haven't found German type food like this on Oahu. So use your GPS and find this place. It's homey and the people are very nice. Ask to meet Bernard; he's a kick!

My sister and I decided to eat here since we just got back home from living in europe for a year..(i was is Neulengbach, Austria and she still lives in Bamberg, germany). First of all they have a minimum of $6.50 to sit there...but everything is ridiculously overpriced!!! I ordered the schnitzel..which was 1.gross 2.had hair in it 3. did not come with cranberry sauce(which all traditional wiener schnitzels do)) 4.cost $18!!!!!! After we found the hair they did remove the item form our bill but we were all grossed out and didn't wanna eat anymore. As we were leaving the lady said "i'm sorry about the hair i tell the cooks all the time about it" so obviously this happens often. So in conclusion DON'T EAT HERE!!

We visited Bridget and Bernards on New Year's Eve and what a delightful surprise. This little gem had great home-cooked German food. Jager schnitzel was so tender and the service was quick and friendly. All three of us had excellent German meals and for Maui it is very reasonable. This place is off the beaten path but worth taking the time to find.

They really need to hire some wait staff. We went for a weekday lunch. The food that eventually came was good, but the one overwhelmed server was having a rough day and apparently it wasn't her first. Allow time and don't expect it to go smoothly.

Brigit & Bernard's never disappoints. We absolutely love the Bratwurst platter and argue over who gets to order it. The service is great but they make everything fresh so don't expect a fast food joint. The food and beer is traditional German and always amazing! The outside patio reminds you of apres ski and brings nice memories.

This review is in regards to their October Fest, taking place every Friday and Saturday night during the month of October.... What a wonderful occasion this is to celebrate fall with a traditional German buffet, live oompah music, festive decorations and delicious beer selections! We arrived a little before opening around 6pm and did not leave until after 9, as we were having so much fun! The food was very good, simple traditional German style mashers, sauerkrauts, sauerbraten, bratwurst, spaetzl, German meatloaf, a chicken dish, a roast pork dish, home made breads, apple strudel...... it was near impossible to eat more than a full plate, but somehow we made it through the line twice... somehow feeling an adult version of a Disney Land experience with the delicious beers and sing along event. Hard to believe we were in down town Kahului on a tropical island. I kept expecting to see a life size Pinocchio or Matterhorn snow monster leap out around the corner.... more than a delicious food experience and something fun and different to do this Autumn in Hawaii of all places. The owners and staff made this such a welcoming and fun event with outrageous hospitality that I will be only too happy to come again to experience their venue on a 'regular' day.

Over priced over priced over priced .... not to mention they charge u for everything .... water? That'll b $1 to go box? That'll be. 25-.50 sharing a plate? That'll be an extra $5. Not to mention my $10 veggie burger was burnt doesn't come with ketchup cheese or fries or chips ... no meal deals here. And the full size salad didn't have enough dressing or croutons ... its not like they are fancy ... serve spectacular food or have any good specials or fresh fish. Service was good ... that's why they get one star!

It's too bad my husband and I are only visiting the islands and can't become regulars here. If you like traditional German food you will love this place. I had the sautéed calamari- seasoned and cooked impeccably- and the Wiener schnitzel. Portions are large, come hungry! This place really hit the spot after morning outdoors.

When I went, I was waiting to pick up a friend from the airport, so I figured a snack and a beer would be a good little holdover til supper. I've always been a huge fan of German beer, and I saw they had Späten on tap. I ordered a soup of the day (at $7.50 a bowl, yikes!) and a pint of Späten Oktoberfest, which I saw they had on tap. I was told the soup was gespatcho, but I was delivered a cup of meat sauce for pasta. I'm not kidding, they gave me Ragu. I took a bit to make sure I wasn't mistaken. I wasn't. I asked the older woman, presumably some sort of manager or owner, to remedy the situation and bring me my real soup. She told me the waitress had a miscommunication with the cook, and what they both thought was soup was indeed meat sauce for the pasta and there was no soup today, however because I'd taken a bite I'd "ruined the bowl" and they couldn't put it back, and she'd like me to pay anyways. I told her I'd think about it, I was still waiting for my beer. The waitress came back over to confirm what kind of beer I wanted, I told her Späten Oktoberfest. "Which one was that again?" she asked and giggled. I told her it was the one on tap with the light blue handle, and it said "Späten Oktoberfest" on it. Now stop me if I'm wrong, but Oktoberfests are dark beers, and what she brought me looked, smelled, and tasted like Bud Light or some other kind of light American beer. After one sip into the beer, the older lady dumped the check on my table and walked away. They were asking $15.00 for a bite of Ragu and a sip of Bud Light. I asked the waitress about the beer, telling her I didn't think it was the right one. She copped an attitude with me and told me "Well, it was from the tap you told me." and stormed off. I left $0.50 on the table, what I thought I should pay for the "soup," "beer," and "service" I'd gotten. Screw this place.

Who woulda thunkdit? German food in Maui! This little gem has authentic tasting eats (das ist gut) at reasonable prices that are so 'comfort food', you'll want to take a nap at the table. The spot is small and fills up for the lunch crowd because the sauerkraut makes 'em keep coming back for more. I got the schnitzel and you should too. Aufedersein

For Maui to have such home made euro fare = awesome!! Trumps the LA euro scene which is amazing.. Great service and really pure food ie they use no lard, no sugar no MSG when cooking and you can taste it!! Amazing calamari and my friends had schnitzel which they loved!! Only recommendation would be some better tea selection:o) but otherwise super great minimalist non processed classic food.. The shpetzle was awesome!!!

I've had the schnitzel, brat plate, and roulade and they were all great. The spatzel is frickin delicious. The only thing is that they don't serve everything everyday as the menu rotates, but honestly everything I've had off the menu was great. Plus they serve Spaten so you can wash it all down with a nice beer.

I've been wanting to try this place forever! Last night I went with my boyfriend. We sat down outside and looked through the menu. Everything was kinda pricey, but we did notice some of the plates that were marked as 50+ we're for two. We ended up ordering the bratwurst pupu ($9) , lamb kabobs ($21), and Bernards special smothered pork and pasta ($20 something). It took over 40 minutes for our appetizer. They did serve us bread, which was pretty yummy. I was disappointed with the bratwurst pupu, we only got one bratwurst and it wasn't that great. It actually looked like the ones they sell at Safeway in a pack of 4. (I know because I buy those) Our food finally came out and it wasn't that appealing. Some of my potatoes were burnt, and I wasn't thrilled with my lamb kabobs. My boyfriends pasta looked horrible, there was no pasta sauce, his pork pounded thing tasted okay. I wish the food would have lived up to the pricing. I'm pretty sure the wait was so long because Bridget is out front doing waitress for the whole place, and Bernards cooking for everyone. I'm 98% sure I will not be coming back here. I wish Restaurant Impossible would come to Maui! Our food places need help.

I loved everything about this hidden German Paradise. The Family was awesome! They almost eclipsed the wonderful food!

Cute restaurant tucked in the middle of a sketchy industrial section of Maui. Intriguingly, the "fish market" across the street was the place to be, and humorous to watch from the patio seating. Concept is good, but execution was flawed. The restaurant was out of every third item we asked about. No draft beer (for a German restaurant?), no blue cheese, completely out of desserts. If you are vegetarian - do not go. There was only one vegetarian dish, and it was bland. In fact, the only dish that was decent was the lamb. Two of our party got pasta dishes, and someone else got the veal. All bland. The owner/chef does come out and chat with you, which is nice. Note : if you sit outside, you may get nibbled on by bugs. We got chewed on. Personally, if you are going to Maui on vacation, I wouldn't recommend this place unless you deeply crave German food.

I've passed this place numerous times and finally went in. ATMOSPHERE: They're located in the Kahului Industrial Park, which means zero views. The inside is small and quaint and charmingly decorated, even on the ceiling. Table only seating is for about 20 max. The outdoor deck seats about the same amount of people and is shaded by trees and umbrellas. MENU: It's a mashup of Italian, German, Swiss, and American apps and entrees. FOOD: Chicken Cordon Bleu - I really liked it! The breaded chicken breast was tender and stuffed with ham and Swiss cheese and then I believe deep fried. It came with au gratin potatoes, not my favorite style of starch but it was good and lightly creamy, and the sauteed veggie medley of onions, mushrooms, carrots, zucchini, yellow peppers, and carrots were cooked perfect and had a great savory flavor which enhanced the potatoes and chicken. Great job! Generous portion for $18. Carbonara - My friend's dish. She and I absolutely love pastas so I trust her judgment. Unfortunately the dish lacked salt. The toppings of bacon and mushrooms were a bit skimpy and didn't include any peas. She took her leftovers home and doctored it up with more cheese which made it better. Again, another generous portion for $16. RESERVATIONS: Not needed. We walked in on a Monday around noon and the place was dead. Within a half hour or so a few more peeps came in. I thought they'd have more takeout orders being in an industrial area but not so. I guess the food doesn't appeal to the takeout crowd. SERVICE: The lone female server was friendly and professional. OVERALL: Mainstream pricing, good portion sizes, very good chicken cordon bleu.

What a find! Who thought that you could find a tremendous authentic German restaurant in Maui! My family and I were looking for a place to eat while in Kahalui and stumbled upon this place. The food was great and genuine German hospitality welcoming.

In less then a week, we are back here for dinner. Brigit and Bernards has this cozy, homely atmosphere with a great Chef, great service, and great food. Its such an awesome place to come and dine. Everything we've ordered here, every time we visit it is excellent! The service here is superb. I had the Ahi with Caper Sauce and my husband had the monchong with caper sauce. My picky 2 year old twins love the fish sticks, all are absolutely fresh. Thank you Bernard and staff for your hospitality. You know we will be back.

What a lucky find. This is the ideal place to eat before taking the redeye back to the Mainland. It's located about 5 minutes from the airport. We enjoyed the Bratwurst platter and Weiner Schnitzel. Both portions were large enough to share. Brigit, one of the owners, is kind and guided us through the menu. Everything is hand-made; this is not a chain. Great service from Brigit and her daughter.

I've been wanting to go to Brigit & Bernard's for years during my visits to Maui but could never make it happen. Finally made it and am SO glad I did! The location is as authentic Hawaii as it comes...smack in the middle of industrial area. From outside its not all that impressive but once inside, the fusion of alpen and aloha begins. From the mounted mahi mahi to the rafters lined with steins, you definitely get that you are eating Swiss/German/Alpen food in Hawaii. The service was island time, but that's a good thing in my opinion. The food...SCHMEDKT auf Deutsch, ONO in Hawaiian. Really, I was blown away. I don't eat farmed meat so I'm a bit limited on choices but my food was amazing the the appetizers and entrees that went buy looked pretty darn tasty...which was confirmed by the other diners. If your looking for change up from the usual island fair, try Brigit & Bernard's out...its the best of alpen food with a lot of aloha.

Awesome! Great german food. And I mean GREAT GERMAN FOOD. Location is a little off, being in an industrial section of Kahului. But who cares. They have a cool little beer garden outside, I sat out there til the mosquitoes ate me alive. Then I moved inside. Spaten lager on tap! Schnitzel and spaetzle, oh my! All prepared authentically, all great flavor. Waitress was busy but very friendly, and the food was awesome!! I am a fan, and I will definitely return. Hats off to Brigit and Bernards!!

This little hole in the wall is one of the best places to eat on Maui in my opinion. The Chicken Cordon Blu is amazing! I only deducted one star because theres is never more than one server which makes the wait horrible! Bernard is an amazing chef tho!

I can't believe I never knew about this place! My new favorite hole-in-the-wall place to eat in Central Maui. Love their lamb, Schnitzel, spaetzle and scalloped potatoes. mmm... want to try to antipasto platter too.. that look yummy! Get your German food fix here!

A good restaurant but may need google map to locate. The owner is very friendly and introduced to us the starters/entrees/pastas 'cuz we don't speak German. We ordered a appetizer like some Swiss Cheese over the toast with mushrooms, and it's superb! The pasta of Al Fungi and a German style pork were both in really decent size, we have to apologize not finishing them.

On the island for business. Wanted to find a decent place for dinner so checked out Yelp. Read the reviews, it's been a while since I've had a good German meal, so decided to check it out. Very surprised. The Schnitzel was huge and very good. Service was good, then again, there were only 2 customers. Brought the Apple Strudel back to the hotel. The Schnitzel dinner, the Strudel, and a coke ran me $30. Not much of a drinker anymore but they did have a variety of German beers on the menu. Highly recommend

Excellent German cuisine right here on Maui...The chefs prepare their bratwursts, kraut and potatoes to seasoned perfection. Comfortable family setting.

Wow this was a great place to stop and have some lunch while waiting to fly back to the mainland. I like to find random places to eat at when I go on vacation and I would recommend this place! We were the only ones there when we showed up about 1130 but by the time we left the place was packed. Its small so it fills up fast. We first ordered the shrimp dijon and I just wanted to keep eating the sauce. It was delicious! I got the crab melt sandwich and the other half got the bratwurst platter. Both of our meals were excellent. I loved their sauerkraut wand the crab was perfectly cooked. Only one waitress but she was on top of it, even when the place got busy. If I ever make it out to Maui again, def a stop!

My dinner companion and I arrived on a Saturday evening at 5:10 as they were sitting up for their Oktoberfest buffet. We didn't want that much food to eat so we requested to order off the menu, which has granted. We are told that we would be charged a $5.00 cover charge for the band that was to begin playing at 6:30. We figured we'd be done by then, so no cover charge for us. The food was enjoyable. We were done at 6:00. We requested the check on 3 separate occasions. The check finally arrived at 6:32, just after the band started to play, with a $10.00 cover charge AND a 18% gratuity tacked on for a party off two! Automatically charging a gratuity to a party of less than 6 is illegal unless it was been previously agreed upon. Needless to say, I never agreed to 18%, especially since I had to wait for 30 minutes to receive my check. Clearly this establishment cares more about making money than it does making it's customers satisfied. I will never darken their door again. My family was in the restaurant business in Hawaii for 25 years. They would have NEVER treated a customer in such deceptive manner.

Excellent restaurant! Friendly service, comfortable setting and homey atmosphere. Huge portions! We live on Maui and it took us years - based on friends recommendation to find this tucked away place in Kahului. They have an amazing scallops appetizer on some days. The wiener schnitzel is to die for. So is the chicken cordon blue. Yumm! We look forward to date night and every time we end up in Kahului, I ask my husband where he wants to enjoy dinner, he says " let's go to Brigit and Bernards!" And every time I ask, I secretely hope he says that:) This restaurant truly is a gem.

Love the food. Never have had a bad meal. Decently priced for Maui. Wish they were open mid day for a late lunch or early dinner. Would like to see a bit more cleaning of dining area and bathrooms.

We came across this German beer garden from yelp tonight and enjoyed a delicious meal. The place is small and casual but had a relaxed atmosphere. The food has great quality and a German authentic taste. I would highly recommend giving this place a try!

Aloha! This is a first rate outfit; great menu at affordable prices and a superb, quaint setting! We enjoyed the inside seating area that was reminiscent of small cafe's in Germany, with many German beers on tap. The service was great and there was a large outside seating area, or beer garden. Best German, Swiss menu on Maui. We shall return soon!

Amazing food and atmosphere!!! This is easily my favorite restaurant on Maui. It is owned an operated by an amazing family. Their Octoberfest is the best. Pretty much anything you order will be good. They also have a great selection of German beers on tap.

Let me start by saying that the food at this place was good. Not fabulous or exciting, but decent fare; the food in and of itself was not an issue. The ambiance is cramped but cutesy-kitschy German inside, with a roomy Beer Garden/patio out back that was pleasant. However, this place re-defines the phrase "Nickel and Dime". To begin, there is a $6.50 per person minimum just to sit in this restaurant. Not too difficult when the canned Cokes alone cost $2.50! Then, when one of our party ordered the Salmon burger, the waitress came back to inform us that the cook only had half a "regular" salmon patty left and that the rest of the sandwich would have to be made up of the "premium" salmon, for which they were going to charge us $1.50 extra! I find it totally ludicrous that a business would charge the customer extra for a mistake made by their kitchen! The waitress was far from understanding about the situation and copped an attitude with us when we dared to question the extra money they were asking for. Even the to-go containers cost extra (.50-$1 each) and they automatically add an 18% gratuity for parties of 4 or more. I understand that on Maui things are just more expensive-that is a way of life. And, really, $6.50 per diner would be considered pretty darn cheap anywhere on the island. But I personally felt that this establishment's policies are rude bordering ridiculous and that they went out of their way to stick it to your wallet. If you have no problem with their policies (which are, admittedly, all delineated clearly on the menu) the food was quite tasty, but the food alone is certainly not enough to get me back in the door.

Let me preface this review by saying that I have been going to Brigit and Bernard's since 1998 or 99. I studied German language and culture in college and have traveled to Germany several times. I love German food. Brigit and Bernard's has food that is authentic. It rivals that which I've found across Germany. My favorite meals are the Rostbraten, Sauerbraten, and Rouladen. These are specials that are sometimes available. The Sauerbraten needs to be ordered three days in advance to allow it to be prepared correctly. The other two seem to be generally available, but they do run out sometimes. These also come with red cabbage and Spätzle which are both excellent. So not only does Maui have German and Swiss food; it is authentic and amazing. Everyone who works at Brigit and Bernard's also takes it upon themselves to make sure your experience is the best it can be.

This place is run by a German lady and a Swiss guy We had wiener schnitzel and cordon bleu. It tasted very good. I just wish they had German potato salad. Instead it was served with potato Au gratin and pan roasted veggies and spätzle. Chef even went out of his way to not add mushroom to our sauce. Side salad was perfect. If you crave German food in Maui, this is the place to visit.
