Stopped here for shaved ice and baked goods after a trip to Akana Falls. Quaint place, had great service. I enjoyed the shortbread cookies and my husband enjoyed the monkey bread.

Referred to this place with a 10% off coupon from the Zip Line company nearby. What a treat!! I purchased the BEST passionfruit jam and pineapple/coconut jam I have ever had. So fresh and sweet and nothing artificial tasting. I cannot stop eating it since I got home!! I even used the passionfruit as a coconut scallop dipping sauce! Super friendly place and you can sample the goods. The macaroons were tasty and my favorite was the macadamia shortbread cookies. The fresh homemade hawaiian rolls were good too. I wish they had a website to order from but I think you can order by email because I do know they ship in-store.

We stopped into the bakery on our way to Akaka Falls. The cinnamon roll was delicious. There's an area right outside the shop to enjoy your carbohydrate-filled treat... and you can wash it down with a coffee/tea from the shop next door.

If your playing tourist, and you want to see Akaka falls anyhow, stop here! the baked goods are only ok, the cookies are great, but what im here to tell you about are two of my must haves when I stop thru. Shave ice; Ed (yes there is an ed owner and head cook) makes his own syrups for the shaved ice! He makes them from local fruits and they have fantastic flavor! the lilikoi (passion fruit) Is fantastic!!!! Second ut not to be forgotten fresh home made jams, jellies, and chutnies!! In every local flavor you could ask for, a wall full of mason jars!! from light you up on fire lava to cool pineapple or lilikoi, no sugar added for some the choices seem endless. Take a jar home it's a great local gift!

Smells awesome, tastes bland. I bought chocolate chip cookies, snicker doodles, cinnamon bread, and monkey bread. They all had one thing in common - definitely fresh but definitely bland. Spent about $20 on my samplings...had half of each cookie and a few bites of each bread then threw out the remains and went to yelp to search for something else to eat.

My sweetheart and I were on the Big Island a few months ago, going to spectacular Akaka Falls to sightsee. On the way back, we stopped in here for a shaved ice. So glad that we did. First let me say that Mr. Ed's is in an adorable little town, Honomu...pretty small and quaint but a place you could certainly romanticize about! But I digress. A few super nice young folks who worked at Mr Ed's helped us pick out some shaved ices from their impressive selection (and they were DELICIOUS and refreshing), but we were only getting started...the selection of homemade jams was jaw dropping and they were super generous with small samples. I got a terrific mango-habanero and also a lilikoi jam which I just used today with fish, and it was over-the-moon amazing great awesome! I can't wait to order some more jams. Next time I'm back on the Big Island, this is on my must-visit list!

Popped into Mr. Ed's after a visit to Akaka Falls, and what a pleasant surprise. I had a guava turnover, which was thoroughly yummy, and was overwhelmed by the selection of homemade jams, chutneys, etc. Seriously, they have flavors you've never thought of, much less tried. I wanted to bring home one of everything, but that would have required an extra suitcase, so I settled for a jar of low-sugar mango jam. I can hardly wait to try it, but news on that will have to wait for an update.

Such a cute little place to stop in! The whole staff is super friendly and you can try as many of the various jams and butters as you want. My family and I even got to chat with Mr. Ed himself, who was very warm and friendly. Definitely try the shave ice with the lilikoi syrup, which is homemade! I loved this place- great food and such great character as well.

Fun stop after Akaka Falls. My daughter saw the snow cone picture on the store front and asked to stop. It was so refreshing to be able to get snack and other goodies. We got scow cones, cold drinks and ice cream. I also got homemade spice blend and a jar of Lillikoi butter. The staff are friendly and accommodating. Nice cute location and building with a rustic touch. Very local and small-town vibe. Loved it.

Mr.Ed of you're out there, I love you!!!!! This place is amazing! So many jams, jellys, preserves, pastrys and snacks!! I wish I had four stomachs and a fat wallet! I wanted to get and eat everything in that place. They have the little shop with all the jams and jellys, and the little room next to it was the little bakery with all the pastrys. We were greeted as soon as we came in. The lady was soooooo courteous and answered any question we had. We headed into the other room, and the young lady in that room was also very accommodating and patient. She as well answered our questions and let us try about 10 different jams, all of them were delicious!!! It was soo hard to choose!! Everything was fairly priced. We ended up getting a guava pastry, coconut pastry, lilikoi preserve, and passionate fruit mustard. I want to go back and get more!

Never have I written a review about a business establishment that I enjoyed doing business with so much and felt so good about. I actually purchased over a dozen jars of jam, they are delicious. I am pertaining to the character and generosity of the owners of Mr. Ed's Bakery. Well, here is is. Dean and June Edmoundson, the owners of Mr. Ed's Bakery, not only make some of the most delicious jams and pastries on the Big Island, using only fresh and local ingredients, but they also have the biggest heart. My wife and I went there last week and spent over an hour there, sampling their jams and talking to them about what they do in the life of the community of Honomu. They are not only talented people with the things they create in the kitchen but they also change people's lives, doing all that they can for others without any regard to themselves. Please review the Youtube clip that Dean lightly touched on during our visit. Dean is a very humble and spiritual man, never one to boast about what he has done. Fortunately for my wife and I, he did share that his community put on an event in his and June's honor. When I saw the clip I was very touched and will never be the same. I am asking my fellow Yelpers to please consider Mr. Ed's Bakery when you are on the Big Island of Hawaii. And yes, they do make the best island jams and pastries on the Big Island. This place was amazing and delicious! We stopped by here on our way out of akaka falls for a quick bite and everything we bought was fresh and simply tasty! There were so many options to choose from and the owner even gave us a special recipe for Iilikoi pie which is a favorite of mine. He was so kind and considerate, not to mention fun to talk to! This should definitely be a stop for anyone looking to find some amazing treats for a bargain! My favorite was the turnovers for sure! Definitely coming here again soon and I'll make sure I'm hungry for more sweet treats!

This is a great stop on the way back from Akaka Falls, with shave ice and an incredible variety of breads and baked sweets, plus an entire wall of 100+ varieties of jams, jellies, and sauces made on the premises.

Can I just say that the shortbread cookies are great. I love this little town and the shops along the main street. We were staying away from sweets and desserts on this trip, but I was so glad to have just one or two of these tasty cookies. Nicely done.

Absolutely loved Mr. Ed's!! The BEST shave ice we've had on the Big Island. Also Mr. Ed makes a large variety of homemade cookies, pastries & jams. We purchased three packages of cookies. So far we've tried the shortbread and oh my goodness!! Can't wait to eat another one with coffee! So delicious!! Also, had an opportunity to meet Mr. Ed. He invited us to sit at his table while eating our shave ice. Such a nice man with great stories! Love finding a local jewel like this!!

Had a refreshing shaved ice with ice cream and got some cookies to go. Lots of jams and jellies to buy....they looked great. Lots of snacks and drinks to choose from, but the flavors for the shaved ice were kind of limited.

I'd love to come back here - such a cute bakery. Wall of jams! I had to resist buying more than a couple of flavors because I couldn't carry them all back. Also bought some lilikoi shortbread, very tasty, and some ice cream which really hit the spot after the hot day we had. I wish I could have tried more stuff but my capacity for sweets is unfortunately finite. Everyone in the shop was friendly. The girl who helped us was so nice, answered all our questions, wrapped up my jam without me asking so I could check it in my luggage, and we had a great chat. Just a lovely experience overall.

MMMMMM. Had the cocopan (sweet bread stuffed with coconut filling), and it was tasty! Moist bread, just the right sweetness and yummy coconut inside. Lots of other tasty tempting treats, but if there's coconut, I'm in. Would stop here every time we're in the area - yum!

We stopped here on our way to 'Akaka Falls. Oddly, we needed bug spray, and they had! An all-natural bug spray, made locally. Perfect. We also bought some bottled water. Onwards to the waterfall! After seeing the waterfall, we came back and bought Hawaiian Sweet Bread for the road. We didn't want to get hungry in the car, since we had a whole day of driving about town to do before heading back to the hotel. The bread was soft, fluffy and slightly sweet similar to King's Hawaiian Bread. It's worth a stop if you need snacks or cold drinks.

Ed's Bakery has great shaved ice, which is a welcome treat after walking around Akaka Falls State Park (it's on the way back to the highway). They seem to use the same or a very similar machine as the famous Matsumoto on Oahu, so the ice has a nice consistency to it. They have the flavored syrups (not nearly as many as Matsumoto) and ice cream you can get on the bottom, but what makes this shaved ice so amazing is that you can substitute the syrup with their homemade Liliko'i (passionfruit) juice! It's delicious! These five stars are for the shaved ice, since I didn't taste any of the other baked goods (they didn't look that great, but I didn't try them). I would also recommend visiting the Woodshop Gallery, a few storefronts down, which has some nice art pieces.

After visiting the neighboring Akaka Falls, you must stop at Mr. Ed's Bakery. This quaint store has everything from homemade cookies, pastries, and jams, as well as shaved ice, and even souvenirs to bring back to your loved ones back home. Anywho, after perusing the baked goodies display and walking around the store twice, I finally decided on the Kona Shortbread cookies. These cookies were bursting with coffee flavor in every bite. If you look closely enough, you can see the coffee bean specs. They were light and flaky, and incredibly delightful. The $3 bag didn't last very long. Oh Mylanta! My only regret was that I didn't buy more goodies. Guess I'll just have to go back to the Big Island! :0 Mahalo!

We were heading to Akaka falls on Christmas day and saw this bakery. We saw the door open and wandered in thinking that they were open. They weren't but Mr Ed was inside and was super friendly to us. We ended up purchasing various pastries for the drive. I had one of the best cinnamon rolls I've ever had in my life! A great place and it's always nice supporting the local community.

If you're on this side of the Big Island, don't miss a visit to Mr. Ed's. The jams and jellies here are fantastic, like nothing else on the islands. Starfruit jam, white guava, jaboticaba (Brazilian plum) - all homemade with aloha and absolutely amazing. This is a true mom-and-pop operation, with preserves made from fruit from their own trees, so it's the kind of place you must visit and you will dream about it for years afterward. Upon hearing that my spouse and I were on our honeymoon, Mr. Ed himself gifted us a bag of Mexican wedding cookies, which were as delicious as the jams. Buy some jams for folks back home. Sit and talk story with Mr. Ed, and soak up some true island flavah!

We really wanted to like this place. However, the monkey bread was dry, the turnovers had very little filling, and the bread pudding wasn't a big hit either. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day, but it just wasn't everything the reviews described.

Friendly bakery! We stopped here for a snack after visiting Akaka Falls. So many jellies and pastries! We ended up sampling some jellies (especially like the Liliko'i) and had a package of honey and jellies shipped back home to give as gifts. We were on our honeymoon and we were given delicious shortbread wedding cookies too! The woman that helped us was very friendly and accommodating. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. The shipping was fast too- it beat us home!

I don't care how much I liked my cookies and Hubby liked his popover, I would not go there ever again because of the crappy, rude, lethargic service I received from the woman working there. We were delighted to see so many baked good and planed to buy a bunch. We had to ask for help after being the only ones in there (besides the lady working there). We weren't loud. We were not taking too long. I don't know what her damage was, but when we asked if she could help us, she rolled her freaking eyes and said "what do you guys need". NO JOKE! We bought one thing each because we were starving, but put everything else down. I still feel like I should have left with nothing and am mad at myself for giving her a smidge of business.

If you are going to Akaka Falls on the Big Island, the little down of Honomu is a nice throwback to 'yesteryear'. We were craving some shaved ice so we gave this place a go. The confusing part is that on the big sign above, it says "Ishigo's, since 1910" but inside it's all Mr. Ed's Bakery. Anyway, so my 'four star' review is based on the shaved ice. It was $3, which sounds a little more than usual, but you get a tub of shaved ice. There is no large or small, just a big Styrofoam bucket. Ice cream is another $.75. I'm a haole so I was outta luck with my usual (lame) cherry, grape, etc. But they did have strawberry, melon, and vanilla for people like me... but all the local flavors like lychee are here. The ice was the standard block ice (ice cube 'sno cones' aren't "shaved ice"). It wasn't the finest, like the 'two places' on the North Shore of Oahu, but it's close enough. Also, randomly, they had various jams, tourist stuff, and ice cream there. I'd say it's worth a look if you're passing through town before hitting Akaka Falls.

Oh my goodness!! So good!! There are just too many jellies and preserves to choose from but the ones we samples and purchased were amazing!! So far the pineapple coconut is my favorite. Simple, delicious recipes (some very creative combinations); no artificial crap - just all natural ingredients. Yum!!

Monkey bread straight out of the oven? Hells yeah! So good. I guess I got lucky and had perfect timing, but when you are there you should ask what just came out of the oven. I also got the chocolate chip mac shortbread cookies and they were ok. Wouldn't get them again. However, the apricot lilikoi jam I got is to die for!

We got a little carried away taking in the sights of Hamakua that when 5 PM rolled around, we hadn't even eaten lunch. So thank goodness for Mr. Ed's humble little bakery because my boyfriend was seconds away from foraging for food in the forest. The monkeybread is so sticky and sweetly satisfying, and the fruit shortbread cookies just crumble and melt in your mouth. Mr. Ed is a sweet gentleman who seems delighted to meet everyone who walks through his doors. Definitely worth it for a sweet snack (or makeshift meal if you're like us).

Mr. Ed's sits inconspicuously on the tiny business strip of Honomu which most people pass on the way to Akaka Falls. Enter the main store and you'll find the typically allotment for a hawaiian bakery -- try the sweet hawaiian bread, yum. But the real treat is in the attached second store. Mr. Ed collects fruits from all over Hawaii to makes jams, jellies and preserves. An entire wall of his concoctions awaits. Hot lilikoi jam! Calamondin Marmalade! Surinam Cherry jelly! Taste as many as you can, and try -- just try -- to walk away without buying at least two jars.

Mr.Ed uses the juice from fruits for the shave ice (he actually said he just recently juiced the lilikoi, the flavor I chose), not some artifical flavor and color, sodium benzoate processed syrup! After looking around, we also had to pick up some jams, breads and other treats- all were very good. Huge selection of jams, including low sugar, sugar free options, some fruits I have never heard of (but now am a fan of!). Definately worth a stop. I think of my lilikoi shave ice more than the waterfall!

Stopped here for some shave ice after a trip to Akaka Falls. Its a true mom and pop bakery where "dad" bakes all of the goodies in-house. We tried the coconut logs as well as blueberry turnovers. Both were very good. It was quiet when we went so the owner (mom) came over and chatted with us which was really sweet. The shave ice wasn't the best we've had, but it was totally made with love. If you're in the area, I would definitely recommend a stop either to or from the falls.

I loved this place! We had a chance to meet with the owners, some of the locals and the minister of their church! They were all so nice to us while we were hanging out waiting for the torrential downpour to subside. The baked goods are great! We got the cinnamon-apple monkey bread, the hawaiian bread, some peach turnovers, macaroons, and macadamia nut cookies. I aslo had the shave ice with the lilikoi....So Ono! A place so nice, we went there twice!

Passing through Honomu to Akaka Falls. We stop to photograph this scenic little town and enter into the Store attached to the bakery. He makes about 100 types of preserves and jams and lets you sample them before purchase. We fell in love with the passion fruit jam (lilikoi) and bought a jar to take home. Enjoyed it tonight. Reasonable at $7.50. Saw similar products in other stores for $13.00...for a small jar of jam. I make my own jam and assure you this is the real thing. Didn't buy anything in the bakery as it was all wrapped in plastic and wasn't sure how fresh. I think it is to protect it from humidity. Mr Ed is real and quite a character. Worth a stop.

the best cinnamon roll i have ever had is from mr. ed's! the ice cream here is so so, and so is their brownies. they have sweet bread that is very fresh, but not as sweet as the bread from other bakeries. i would have given this place 4 stars, but 10 bucks for 3 brownies? the prices are steep. the only real inexpensive thing here is the ice cream, which isnt that great.
