After an exhausting hike down to Waipi'o Valliey, we were starving on our way back to Kona. We saw this place was open and took a chance on it! It was killer delicious! The calzones were amazing! I had the Italian sausage and devoured it in minutes... I think I might have licked the plate! The most amazing thing happened after we finished eating: the one and only Miss Roseanne Barr walked in and sat down to eat. She agreed to take a picture with us. (She ordered the Greek Calzone so I'm sure it must be delish). I will never forget this place definitely the best meal I've had on any of the islands!

Had a great dinner here tonight. Friendly service, food was delicious and reasonable price. Very fresh salad and great calazone -- very reasonable $$.

Read all the reviews on yelp, and since this town only had so many restaurants to choose from, we planned to eat at Cafe il Mondo - and are we glad we did. We had a GREAT meal here. When we first walked in, I was a little skeptical about the food, but when our waitress came over we completely fell in love with her and the place. She was adorable. We ordered the antipasto salad and a calzone. They were both DELCIOUS. And their pesto??!!! OMG - to die for. The night we were there, there were 3 people running the place and I think they were all under 21 yrs. They were all very nice, very helpful and working their butts off. My husband and I were really impressed. Don't forgot that you can go across the street to grab a bottle of wine. A must stop for anyone traveling through Honokaa.

Wonderful food! Simple, fresh ingredients - the calzones are humongous! Good sauce. Love the bread, too! It's a must for a pit-stop while driving around the island.

We were excited to eat here, given the rave reviews and pretty photos posted by other Yelpers. After a long day, we were also looking forward to having a beer with dinner. Because I'm pregnant, I don't really need more than a sip, so my husband brought one 12 ounce bottled beer into the restaurant after we read that it was BYOB. The waitress promptly brought us a bottle opener and 2 glasses. The calzones were okay. Just okay. Pretty to look at but kind of light and doughy, and not particularly substantial. We shared a decent salad that was on the very spendy side for some greenery. An order of cheesy potatoes was just that - spears of potatoes with some cheese slapped upon them. Then came the bill. We were charged, without warning, $3.75 corkage fee for sharing the bottle of beer. After protesting, she told us it would've been $2.00 but because the pregnant lady (me) took a sip, it cost $3.75. Apparently the corkage fee is listed on the back side of the menu on the beverage side, where you wouldn't look if there was no beer to order! A simple apology, or waiver of the fee (in a cash-only establishment where they clearly weren't going to report this) would have remedied the situation. Instead, we were left feeling grumpy and pissed off on our otherwise stellar vacation. And of course, it would've helped sooth our annoyance if the calzones were better.

Very good pizza and sandwiches. Fresh ingredients. I had the Waipio (pizza).

Great place to get a delicious fresh pizza. Service is fantastic. You can watch them make your pizza as well. They don't take credit or debit cards, though! So make sure you bring cash.

Found this place by accident but I'm glad we did. Everything is fresh and made to order. My boyfriend and I had The Big Island Pizza which was ham and pineapple and the kona coffee ice cream for dessert. This was our first time having stone oven baked pizza and it was absolutely delicious. Can't wait to come back here again!

Living in Waimea has its advantages. One is having guests and taking them down into Waipio, and if at all possible on the way back stopping at Il Mondo for lunch. While it is true it is a cash only spot, the food is just so good. His flavors and tastes are superb. We love Calzones but really have not had anything that we didn't like there. This is a little secret spot, we are happy to share. Service is always accommodating and very friendly too. If the place is full, pull up an empty chair to the big center table and become family or "Ohana" as we know it here in Hawaii.

I had lunch here and it was really good. I had a french dip sandwich, coffee, and Tahitian Vanilla ice cream. The food tastes fresh and is very rich in taste. We also sat with the owners whom were very friendly. I would highly recommend stopping here for a very good meal if you're driving through or staying in the area.

Found this place based on the other Yelpers' reviews. It's definitely as good as they say. Awesome place to stop in for appetizers, pizza, and refreshments.

AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS. Checked it on on the recommendation of a friend from the Big Island, the Pesto Calzone + sausage was simple perfection. Checked the menu & reviews out, called in advance and was ready in 15 minutes. The dough was soft, not hard and chewy- despite having to reheat it a little after the 15 min drive back to waimea. All the ingredients were fresh, tasty, in the perfect combination. Greek salad was delicious as well. A gem in such an isolated spot is a rare thing. Supposedly it is a BYOB place as well, but not a whole lot of seating, there is a grocery store across the way to pickup alcohol if thats your plan.

Great food. Get the pesto calzone. We also had the pizza. Service was super kind and quick. Will return.

After the hike in the nearly national park. On our way back, we pass this town. This Italian cafe located at the beginning of the Main Street. It looks really buzzing with clients. Stopped by for a coffee and a cool Japanese Green Tea. Being in Hawaii, you can get Japanese product everywhere. Even in a Italian cafe. Saw the chef making their own pizza dough. Another client passed by and thank him for the exceptional pizza. I had not tried it myself. The atmosphere is good. Friendly service. Only thing it has no expresso machine, so it is only a straight up coffee. I wish the time of the day is the right time for me to try the pizza.

Good food but if you plan on eating in you can't order the large or medium pizzas(?) yea...calzones are ok to dine in with too...but unless you order a small ea at 12-$13 you basically have to tell them you're on the road and may we pleeeaaase eat at a table? Haha sorta silly but just consider it and CASH only!

Very nice little place and friendly people. The owner greeted us and the food was delicious!

  • Stephine M.

Service was really good. Very friendly staff. We ordered the meatball calzone and it was YUMMY. All made from scratch. They don't serve alcohol, but you can bring your own. All the buildings in Honokaa are historic as was this place. You could tell the place had history, it added to the charm. This place is also CASH only.

Stopped in for a quick bite after hiking the Hiilawe falls. A local resident that gave me a ride up the infamous hill told me I had to try this place. Wow, I don't remember the last time I had pizza this good. Pizza made the real italian way. Its really small and cramped inside, so the atmosphere can get a bit "personal" This is a must stop if you are in the area

First of all, let me begin by saying that Honokaa was my favorite of all the towns we visited on the Big Island. It was my favorited because it was filled with glorious treasures for the tastebuds. After driving from Kona to Waipio Valley, we were hungry for some lunch and we wanted to stop by this town to explore and eat. I was so stoked to see photos of calzones on Yelp, that I rushed over to order one. Being a New Yorker, I am always appreciative of a delicious calzone. This one was really good. I have lived in Hawaii for a few years now, and a calzone is hard to come by, no less a good one. I was really excited about this. I went into their cute restaurant and chatted with the friendly girl behind the counter who happily told me to come back in about 20 minutes to pick up my pepperoni calzone. It was so worth the wait. The outside of the calzone was crispy and the cheese inside was gooey. My marinara sauce was also delicious. It was so yummy. I shared it with my pops and he agreed it was really good. Thank you, Cafe Il Mondo, for making me feel nostalgic that afternoon. That calzone took me back. It was such a pleasant surprise to find this place in this small town, but it was awesome.

Surprisingly good find in a small town. We ordered a couple pizzas for 2 and a child. Plenty of food - and we'd worked up an appetite hiking down to Waipi'o Valley. More than a personal pizza, but probably not enough for two without something else. Tasty and generous toppings. Service very friendly and attentive (although wasn't busy). Had nice conversation with waitress. Worth a stop if you're looking for a good meal nearby.

  • Jennifer R.

Delicious. They make all their bread in house and it is tender and tasty. Their pizza crusts were crusty and crunchy. The chicken sandwich was moist and full of flavor. The meatball sandwich was loaded and the marinara was just right, not too much. Great food. I would come back for more.

  • Bob L.

What an awesome little restaurant. Tucked into an out-of-the-way location, this restaurant provided excellent food and service. The pastrami sandwich was excellent: fresh bread, tasty meat...easily the best sandwich I've had in months.

After a couple of hours in waipio hiking Hi'ilawe to the most gorgeous waterfall, you really work up an appetite. We were looking forward to eating at Cafe Il mondo craving pizzas and calzones esp. Since this cute little place is BYOB! We had a very nice waitress "Denna" who brought us glasses for our beers and wines! We ordered the waimea pizza, Sergio's calzone and I had the Italian sausage calzone which was super delicious I ate the whole thing and after leaving I was still craving for another calzone because it's just that goooood!!!!

    (5)
  • Chris D.

Stopped in for lunch. We shared a sausage calzone. It was delicious!! By far, our best food on the Big Island! Pros: small quiet place with great food and nice staff. Reasonably priced! Lots of Great Italian options! You can smell the basil when you walk in and everything that came out of the kitchen looked and smelled very appetizing! Cons: We got our food about 25-30 minutes after ordering. Just a tad slow, but it is because everything is fresh and made to order.

  • Kinjal S.

Stopped by this little Italian restaurant while driving around the Big Island. Small but cozy place. We were craving pizza that night and we got lucky. We ordered the "Italian" pizza, which was sooo goooood!! It is basically a margherita pizza, thin crust, I requested it be well baked and they did a great job. NOTE: They only accept cash

Cute little pizza place in downtown Honokaa. It was first Friday and we were going to go to Gandmas across the street but it was busy so we came here. We got a nice side table for the two of us. In the center of the dining room there is a large "community" table..I glad we got our own table as I feel that could feel a little cramped. We got the Waipio pizza and a side salad..both were very good! They had a lot of people picking up to-go orders so it was just a little slow getting to the table. They don't serve alcohol but you can bring your own. They provide the glasses if needed but do charge a 3$ and change corking fee. Still a good deal to me as we bought a bottle for as much as a glass is anyway. My husband walked to the market while we waited for our salad. Very good food, decent prices and friendly staff!

  • Monica B.

This is my favorite restaurant in my sweet hometown of Honoka'a, has been for many many years. I looove the "Sergio" pizza (Mushrooms/Artichokes) with pesto sauce, it's the absolute best thin crust pizza you'll ever try...and I order it extra crispy! ;) At lunch I get the veggie sandwich on the homemade foccacia & add pesto sauce, yummo!!! They also do a daily soup special, with that fabulous foccacia bread toasted, for only $5! Enjoy & aloha!

  • Linda L.

A funky little cafe in town, we were after some lunch and this place fit the bill. We had their toasted sandwiches @$10 each. Very tasty, although I didn't care for the pickle (I typically don't like pickles). They have a gorgeous old wooden bar in the place, but unfortunately you can't stand or sit at it. Go here for some good food at a reasonable price.

Incredible pizza and calzone. Don't miss this place when you visit. We will be back

  • Brian P.

I think this is the best food option in Honokaa. Our pizza and salad was really tasty - I didn't know quite what to expect when we went in, but I'm sure glad we did. There are a bunch of little things that could have been just a little bit nicer, like the falling-apart menus for example, but overall it's a great little local pizza joint. The wait staff was fast and friendly, and I'd definitely come back.

  • Elly V.

Stopped in just before going to Waipio, only had a few minutes to grab a bite. The young waitress was extremely friendly and accommodating with our time crunch. We ordered the big island pizza, grabbed some water, she put our pie in a box and we were out. Pizza is a bit pricy, but it was worth it. Sauce was great and lots of toppings. Also bring cash like many mom and pop shops they don't take credit cards.

  • Brent A.

It doesn't look like much and it seems a bit out of place but this is excellent Italian food. They have been around for almost 20 years so they are obviously doing it well. Calzones and sandwiches are both outstanding. I have it 4 instead of 5 stars since the don't serve beer. A good cold beer with pizza or calzone is a must, but regardless it's worth a visit.

Let's start with the basics. We were in the middle of NO WHERE. Seriously I couldn't pronounce the name of the town as a mainlander and felt like I had gone back in time 20 years as we drove through the streets (which in many ways was very nice). We had been out on a drive and was about an hour from our condo. So what do you do in a foreign land with nothing but your wit, devilishly handsome good looks, and your iPhone? You pull up Yelp that's what you do given the other two are more fiction than fact! So we did and since we wanted pizza this place sounded like a fit. As I was reading about it, my wife says there's a place and funny enough it was the same Il Mondo that I was reading about. We walk in and I'm going, what did we get ourselves into? The place is alright looking, but I'm in the middle of the mountains of Hawaii...(seriously Hawaii and looking for pizza!!! are you kidding). We sit down and the place is okay, nothing fancy and kind of small yet then again it's kind of cool and obviously not a chain which is good (support your local economy and all). I read about the calzone on yelp so being a fan by nature I order my stand by the italian sausage while my wife orders the Greek. We wait and take in the scenes of the restaurant for what felt like a good amount of time, but the waitress was nice and we weren't in a rush so all is good. Finally after a while the waitress comes around the corner with our food and HOLY COW! This is not a calzone...it's art! I'm mean seriously check out the pics I took they look ridiculous. No wonder we had to wait, they literally made it from scratch and it looked good. I took the first bite and man was I hooked. It was possibly the best calzone I have ever experienced and I travel a LOT (NYC, Chicago, etc...) and this little hole in the wall had the audacity to create this! What did I do to get so lucky. We ooh'd and ahh'd for what seemed like forever as we devoured what had once been a Picasso of italian inspired perfection. Note: Cash Only. Does not accept credit cards, but Amazing Food!!! In the words of the Governator...I'll be back!

Finding this restaurant in the middle of nowhere is another example of why I love Yelp. While checking out the Waipioo lookout point with my family, we realized it was 1pm and we were starving. Pulled out the iPhone Yelp app and this place came up with 24reviews and 4.5 stars so why even bother looking at other places. We ordered the pastrami sandwich and turkey sandwich which were terrific! The sandwich was toasted which was a nice touch and it was big and only 7.50. We held the mayo and it was still very moist and the bread was super fresh. We also ordered the big island pizza for the boys (cheese, ham (great smoked flavor) and fresh sweet pineapple. They make the thin crust dough fresh and a hefty portion of cheese (which I liked) that had a nice flavor. I could wait to eat the leftovers for dinner:) The staff was super friendly, even after my 5 yo dumped water everywhere. I loved the small town charm of this place. We will def be back if ever in the area again.

Great Service, Cook, and Food, Especially the calzones! If you love pizza and italian come try them out. My only complaint is they aren't bigger!

    (4)
  • Stephanie J.

Was very crowded.. They don't serve alcohol. The pizza could have been made better at home - the sauce isn't very hearty and the dough seemed undercooked. The calzone I had however was superb. I would return just for that.

  • Aaron E.

Another recent visit (this time for pizza) confirmed that the place still has solid food. The nearby TKS Store has been replaced by the Malama Market, but you can still run over to get some beer or wine for your dinner!

  • Nicole G.

The pizza was amazing. Sandwiches were yummy too. Food is fresh and smells yummy! The wait can take a little bit but it's worth the wait. Wish we had this pizza in Colorado. Best place in town!

  • Andrew G.

I got the Big Island (Hawaiian) pizza, while the wife got the chicken sandwich. We shared some of the "twice-baked" potatoes. Nothing super memorable, but it was a nicely located place to stop.

    (3)
  • Sue L.

Excellent pizzas and Greek salad. Wonderful friendly staff. From the reviews, I was concerned we would be waiting awhile for our food (and we were hungry!) but it didn't take long at all. I was sharing a vegetarian pizza called the Waipio Pizza-which had olives, mushrooms and bell pepper -yum! My son had the meatball calzone which he devoured as did my husband.

    (5)
  • Eric M.

Great hole-in-the-wall Italian Cafe. Didnt expect to find Italian food this good on the Big Island. Try a calzone or meatball sub. You won't be disappointed. Service was a little slow but it was busy and only one server was working. Worth the wait though.

Excellent pizza, friendly service! Great place to grab some food on your way to or from waipi'o.

    (5)
  • Dave G.

This is the place to hit either before or after going to Waipio Valley. Service is leisurely because everything is made to order and it's a small place, so keep that in mind if you are trying to make a tour. Cafe Il Mondo's 4.5 star rating is right on the money. I'll bump them up to 5 because, it's a long way to New York's Little Italy from here. When researching this place on Yelp, Eric C.'s glowing review sealed the deal. What's more when I sent him a thank you compliment, he was quick to get back with a "get the sausage calzone, I just had it again two weeks ago!" Ok sold! And yes he's right it's a great calzone. Stuffed with tons of mozzarella cheese, chunks of mild but flavorful sausage, diced onions, and fresh mushrooms, this was a beautiful thing. I actually would call it a stromboli rather than a calzone since it doesn't have any ricotta cheese. However Cafe Il Mondo has decided to replace the ricotta cheese with even more Mozzarella, so no complaints here. The marinara sauce had a nice tomato and fresh basil flavor to it. The folded dough crust was pefectly crispy on the outside without being over done. While one review here said they are "humongous", I didn't think so. They are still individual size calzones, a little too small to share unless you are a light eater. yelp.com/biz_photos/Tei3… My wife had a daily special of spinach and cheese stuffed ravioli topped with sausage, mushrooms, and marinara sauce. This was the same mix that was in the calzone but was also delicious with the raviolil. The ravioli filling was excellent as well. I can highly recommend this dish if you happen to see it on the daily specials list. yelp.com/biz_photos/Tei3… Thinking we were ordering too much food, we ordered a Canta Napoli Pizza and had them leave a few slices plain cheese for my daughter which they were happy to do. You be surprised the problems I've had with other places, when I request a 1/4 pie plain cheese. This had lots of toppings of pepperoni, sausage, onions, bell peppers, and black olives. The thin crust held up well even with all the weight of the toppings. The crust is cooked on a stone slab so it gets nice and firm but not overcooked. They only sell small pizzas if you are dining in and this is a personal size. We had no problem finishing it along with our other meals. 4 star pizza, we enjoyed the calzone and ravioli more. yelp.com/biz_photos/Tei3… CASH ONLY!!!

Pizza, salad, and service were excellent! Beware tho, menu states you can bring your own beer or wine, then I got dinged $2 corkage fee for my own bottle of beer.

After the visit to Waipio lookout, we stopped by here for lunch. We tried couple of choices and they were all delicious. Since it is all prepared fresh and probably due to a smaller kitchen, it takes time for the food to come. Note that they take only cash.

  • Ashley B.

This little Italian restaurant was just what we needed after hiking to Hi'ilawe waterfall in Waipi'o Valley. I always love restaurants where you get to walk through the kitchen. It has a giant table when you first walk in for large groups or a bunch of small ones. I had the veggie calzone ($12) and my husband had the bowl of clam chowder with 2 slices of foccacia ($5). I can't say enough how fresh it was. They garnished my calzone with fresh tomato that was one of the most flavorful tomatoes I've had in a long time. It was as if they picked in from their own garden. If you're in the area, it's well worth the stop. Oh! And they only take cash.

  • Nicole V.

This is a great little cafe in a strip of fun restaurants and stores. Out of five in our party, everyone was happy. The food was fresh and tasted house made. The bread was delicious. The service was quick and friendly. It is a small dining area with an open kitchen; you can talk to the chef while he is preparing your food. You do have to walk through the kitchen to get to the bathroom, but we found this fun and the bathroom was the cleanest of our whole trip. Many cafés like this don't even have a public bathroom so we were pleased after a morning of driving. This is the perfect stop on your way to/from Waipio Valley.

  • Ruth L.

Found this on Yelp! and so glad we did. While staying Honokaa, we once dined in and then later did take out. Both times we were sooooo happy! The pizzas, calzones and salads are all so fresh and delicious. We were glad to read the review that stated "cash only" and that we could bring in our own wine. The only reasons I do not give five stars are that it is really hot inside, and it would be nice if they took cards. Otherwise--YAY!

Went here on the recommendation from a friend. Boy was he spot on!! The Calzone was superb!!! Our waitress was friendly and attentive. Can't wait to go back and try their other offerings!

Split lasagna it was more than enuf. Focaccia bread was extremely wonderful, crust was like an aa field of lava, all bumpy and crunchy with hidden herb treasures, and the dough had just the right amount of fight to it: chewy yet crumbly and yeasty heaven! The lasagna sauce was a minefield of chunky flavorful tomatoes: perfect acidity vs sweet, meaty and not runny. Oh yes, we were impressed - planning on many more visits, especially when we spotted the calzone being served at the next table! Yowza!

Considering Honoka'a is a small town and most shops close early and are geared towards local flavors this is a good option. I have only been here once while visiting family and I must say I will probably not go back, unless i was starving. If you want pizza or a quick bite to eat and find yourself in an unfamiliar part of the island then yea this works. Friendly staff and it wasn't busy so no complaints there. I only had a pizza which was about as good as something from Dominos or Pizza Hut or any other chain. Though it is important to note that I've actually been to Italy and had authentic Italian pizza so I am a bit spoiled now but like I said you could do worse but don't go expecting something amazing. If you're tired and hungry it'll do the trick but don't expect the best thing ever and you won't be disappointed.

Only ate there once. Had the Hawaiian pizza (of course) and it was one of the best pizzas I've ever had. A little heavy on the cheese, which I guess is an issue if you're not a cheese lover. If you want wine or beer, you need to bring your own.

We stopped by Cafe Il Mondo after several locals recommended it to us. We got the chef salad with tofu, a Hawaiian pizza and the tofu sandwich. The salad came with bread soaked in butter. When I asked for a piece without they happily obliged. My dad loved the pizza saying that everything was fresh (which it certainly is.. we watched them make it in the open kitchen). Our one vice was the sandwich which was loaded with mayo despite failing to mention that it was included in the sandwich. We had already waited quite some time for our food so by that point my sister just tried to scrape it off and eat it. Overall it was a nice place to eat lunch on the way back from the waterfalls.

A definate stop when passing by Honokaa!! Since I was doing some business there, I knew I had to try this place again. This time I ordered their Italian Sausage Calzone and with the cheese and pepper flakes provided, this was really really good. I think this place is the best non-pasta Italian place in Hawaii. If this place was on Oahu, it'll be packed. But I guess being secluded in a little town makes this place so great.

  • L G.

Good calzone. After Waipio beach, I was powerful hungry and this place was close and delicious. Service was friendly and the food was terrific. There were unique tables made of an old sewing machine base and one about 12 feet long made of solid rosewood. Cozy and convenient. Will be back.

Bangin' pizza on the Big Island's north side? Who'd'a thunk it!! Mondo serves up authentic Hawaiian pizza... I don't even know what I mean by "authentic Hawaiian pizza," but go see for yourself. OUTSTANDING!

  • Shiv G.

We've had a lots of pizzas, but this one was right up there on the top! The chef understood what exactly we wanted and made sure we got the best. I would really recommend anyone visiting the Big Island to pay these guys a visit. The service was a little slow, but in their defense, they are a very small restaurant. They do not accept credit/debit cards, so remember to take enough cash. The pizzas were about 13 bucks apiece. To summarize, these pizzas are the best we've EVER had. We wouldn't mind going back to Hawaii just to eat here :)

  • Fred P.

Great little spot. We had a great time eating here, even with our little ones, which is saying a lot. Casual, great homemade food (the calzone with pesto and artichokes was outstanding). You can tell they care about the food and your experience, and it shows. no alcohol served, so BYOB. One of our best meals on the island.

This is a total gem! Honokaa is a small town before you reach the Waipio Valley, a favorite spot of Hawaiian royalty back in the day. This little cafe is on the quaint main stretch of Honokaa. It has fresh ingredients and homey feel. We had a garden salad with their homemade vingarette and veggie Waipio pizza. Really nice folks there and they take good care of you!
