Hands down the best BBQ ever. my husband ate his ribs with a plastic fork and the pulled pork was so moist and delicious. The fresh squeezed lemonade was so sweet and refreshing. Definitely make a stop here it won't disappoint.

Had some of the best pork ribs ever. Fell off the bone and very little fat. Try DA Sampler and get a taste of 3 items. The brisket is vey good as well. Mahalo

The ribs and baked beans are hella good! Cool little atmosphere with outside patio dining. Don't forget to try the fresh lemonade..we will def be back

The brisket is juicy and tender! Loved the service, the roaming free range chickens, and the overall laid ack island vibe. The barbeque was as good as any I've had in TX.

  • Mike C.

While sauce is personal preference, the pulled pork had good texture and flavor. This is a REAL bbq place....slow-cooking the meat for hours... not the the kind that say BBQ but are really just "Grilling." Because we arrived just before closing, Jake was out of brikset and ribs: get there early!

  • Sireesha R.

Mmmmmm! We got some BBQ to go along with our poke from the poke place next door because we were super hungry after our snorkeling session. My boyfriend got the BBQ pork with rice and I got the BBQ chicken with rice. The BBQ sauce that was use was fantastic! The shredded chicken was very tender and soaked up all the flavor of the BBQ sauce. Definitely try this place out!

  • Christen g.

Best food stop so far on the Big Island. Got talked into the lemonade and THANK GOD. Ribs fell off the bone, pulled pork sammy was incredible and the baked beans were sugary and delicious. Ribs being served over rice was super weird, I think, but so it goes. This place was incredible. Don't fuck this up. Eat here. HOT TIPS: call ahead to see if they're open. it's pretty Hawaiian in the I'll Be Open When I Want To Be Open vibes.

Really good. I got the sampler and it didn't disappoint. I was shocked with how good it was. A must stop location for the perfect vacation.

*They are doing it right here, great brisket, no nonsense and just gruff enough to tell me they are authentic BBQ *Love the set up on the highway with the wheelbarrow of Kiawe wood, awesome *Grab a seat at the picnic table and enjoy and dont forget to grab a pound of Poke from Da Poke Shack next door for the road!

He runs out of food he is so good so don't be to late in the day, best pulled pork sandwich I have ever had. Btw he gets there at 4am to slow cook and the food isn't ready til 11am he definitely puts the time in!

  • Jen G.

Thanks to great Yelp reviews, my husband and I stopped at Bike Jake's and didn't regret it! I got the meat sampler and it was perfectly cooked and so tasty! The outside seating was mostly a treat (nice shade, good atmosphere) although sometimes I would get a faint smell of nearby waste - not terribly strong though. I would definitely go back if I'm in the area again.

  • Olen R.

So good! They put a Hawaiian spin on good Texas BBQ. We had the pulled pork sandwich which was huge and absolutely delicious, and the brisket plate which was also amazing. Everything was homemade including the sides. We both had the beans and potato salad. The lady who served us was super friendly, and told us how they make their BBQ sauce with locally grown oranges (the Hawaiian spin I was talking about). The also make fresh lemonade and iced tea, ask them to mix the for a delicious Arnold Palmer.

Big Jakes is the real deal. One man with a passion for all things smoked. We stopped by and had the pulled pork and brisket sammy's great stuff. We ate there on the little picnic table and grabbed a couple of Primo's from store. Both sandwiches were great. Nice smoke ring and great sauce. sweet with the heat. If you eat there say high to the Rooster!

Amazing BBQ. Sauce was outstanding and the lemonade was awesome. Top it all off with watermelon for a perfect meal.

  • Curt P.

This joint shares a parking lot with the new Da Poke Shack along the highway. I recommend getting one meal from Da Poke Shack and one from Big Jakes. He has small twists on BBQ that you won't find on the mainland. I love BBQ and found it to be quite good. It can be a few bucks more than a sandwich somewhere else, but good BBQ requires good meat and it's worth a few bucks if you love BBQ.

Caught this place on the way back from diving at 2 step. A little leary....small next to the road, modest picnic tables outside. Ordered the lunch special ribs and brisket. Came fast, hot, savory, generous portion and tasty. I love this place! See my pic...missing rib.

  • Matt L.

I am a huge lover of BBQ and can safely say this is some of the best I've had. Had the pulled pork sandwich, rice, and beans. The BBQ sauce was delicious and applied hot to the sandwich. Got a brisket sandwich for the road before my flight off the Big Island. Should I find my way back sometime in the future, Jake's will be a must stop!

Pulled Pork Sandwich with slaw and beans. That's all you need to know. $9.95. Just watch out for Mosquitos when you eat at one of their tables.

  • D G.

Pretty amazing! This was a great find after a day of snokeling and kayaking at Kealakekua Bay. We had the chicken and tri tip. Baked beans were really tasty, and I also enjoyed having the bbq with white rice. I was amazed to see all thetrophies in the kitchen - a sign that Jake's had some serious recognition for its bbq. There is a seafood shop next door, so I also had some poke to go with my bbq. Seating is outside with all of the island critters, but that made it even more fun. We will definitely return next time we are on the Island.

If you find yourself on the Big Island in need of some excellent food for excellent prices, stop here! Awesome BBQ! Everyone at the table loved what they ordered.

Good place for lunch - stop to get some food on your way to Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park or Np'opo'o (Kealakekua Bay) for kayaking or snorkeling. Pulled pork is soft and smoky, cole slaw is nice and tangy - not sweet like some other places. A take out window with some outdoor tables under a roof.

Just got back from a week on the Big Island with 86-yr-old mother. Had taken our time doing a self-guided Kona district tour...almost like wine tasting in Napa Valley. Who knew there were so many nuances, ways of growing, trellising, selecting, roasting, etc. Next thing it was 3:00 and we had only consumed caffeine. Locals suggested Jake's and WOW! We were in "hog heaven" so to speak. Experienced a squall but stayed dry eating undercover at outside rustic picnic tables. Jake is a super friendly guy and his food is FAB! Great value for the price. Wish it had been closer to our hotel. Definitely a must-stop place!

    (5)
  • Patrick R.

We had the tri-tip plate, it was amazing and obviously took some time to make. While we were eating our lunch, Jake brought us out some ribs and told us we had to try them while we were there, glad we did they were excellent! Topped it off with bread pudding we had a great time and great food.

  • Brett M.

Plain and simple.... Absolutely best BBQ I have had in Hawaii (all islands)! When you pull up to this place, you first notice his giant homemade smoker... Which is where the magic happens. His ribs are next to none, and I recommend when you go here, that you get a rack or two to go and put them in your fridge for another day. Also, sometimes he's at the Keahou Farmers Market on the weekends and he makes an amazing breakfast burrito!!! Go check out Big Jake's when you're anywhere near the place. Well worth the added drive.

  • Christi M.

I'm a huge fan of roadside food, and several years ago we were on the Big Island exploring, and passed this place. I had to turn around and go check it out. It is attached to a little store that has some great deals on Korean food stuff. The bbq is fantastic, I think we have tried most of the menu as many times as we went after that first time! Food is always fresh, hot & tasty - can't go wrong with any of it! Nice to sit outside and relax while munching on the ono grinds!!! Don't miss trying this place if you are heading to the Big Island!!

  • Brittany M.

My husband and I ate here on our honeymoon back in November... this was, by far, the best meal we had on the Island! The most delicious, fast, and fresh BBQ we've ever had - I sincerely hope we go back to the Big Island in the future so we can have it again. Affordable, delicious, great service,

  • Ryan A.

My Wife had the pork ribs and I had a pulled pork sandwich. IT was our last day in hawaii and we had both been itching for some real BBQ the whole time we had been there. Big Jake's was worth the wait. This place was delicious and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for BBQ on the big island.

  • Alaya C.

The only problem is that you pay restaurant prices for sitting outside with invasive species. Its worth it. A Hawaiian spin on BBQ. Pulled pork and sticky rice? Don't mind if I do. It is pretty cheap and worth the animals. I lived in Houston so I'm pretty used to the BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ and big bugs. Give it a try :) Its pretty darn good.

    (4)
  • Ronni S.

The real deal BBQ. Awesome pulled pork sandwiches. Homemade potato salad, baked beans and coleslaw were all good. Only seating is picnic benches outside with crowing roosters. Fun place for lunch with kids and great food for the adults.

  • Nicole S.

Very solid BBQ ribs and chicken. Yummy sauce. Place is a roadside diner with outdoor seating that makes for a great lunch stop from Kona down to the south. Don't expect anything fancy and you will be pleased.

  • Ladie M.

I didn't eat the food at Jake's because I ate something before going there but my boyfriend said it's good so I'm putting in a rating on his behalf. Having Jake's dog there is a real plus! The dog loved his belly rub :)

  • Phil H.

Very friendly, helpful staff-Just very cool. There were randomly some chickens in the eating area. Dessert was delicious. Bread pudding - order it - it was fantastic!! Ribs were absolutely delicious. Pork butt was amazing. Pulled pork sandwich was ordered to go because it was so good. Stop and get you some ribs...then buy some beer from the adjacent store and have a great afternoon. Well done, delicious, friendly- highly recommended.

There is no way you can claim to be a BBQ fan and not worship this place. This is the MAD note, yo....Jake's doin' it for real. Mouth watering pork BBQd just right, fresh daily, served with a great side of beans and mac salad. The only thing you need to add is a cold beer from the store next door. Eat there in the piglet garden or do what we do, and take it to the beach. You will NOT be disappointed. Plus, Jake is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet, if you are lucky enough to run into him on the job. The only other BBQ place that runs a close second is the subject of another review.

Been here last year and we had to stop by again. Had the pulled pork sandwich and the smoked pork butt plate. The meat was very tender and flavorful. Nice tangy BBQ sauce. Overall really good. Pictures are better than words, so check them out. This place is right at mile marker 106. So stop by and have plate.

Big Jakes was our first stop when we arrived on the Big Island. We went directly there because we had seen the restaurant on television back home. It sounded so great , but we were very disappointed in the quality of the food and the service. There was only one worker there on a Saturday afternoon and they were very busy. There is no system to receive your food and people kept grabbing our order when they called out half rack of ribs It took us 25 minutes to get our food and it very poor quality ribs. They were not well rendered they were not baby back as we had seen on tv

Totally amazing BBQ. Do not let the owners local laid back attitude deter you, he is very nice and makes some great BBQ. If you are a tourist get the sampler, you won't be sorry, totally worth the price. It is a good amount of food and is all so good. Very high quality with great flavor. Coming from colorado we have great BBQ and this is top notch. Worth the stop for sure.

Jakes BBQ is worth searching for and coming back for if you come by and he's closed. We called ahead to confirm hours. All made by Jake, amazing raspberry citrus based sauce, fall apart tender pork ribs, and my favorite was the beef brisket, melt in your mouth. Coleslaw was great, more sweet than not with raisins and love the sticky rice slathered in Jake's sauce. Our favorite Big Island meal so far this trip.

Stopped in for a late lunch, we needed to get setting quick settle the kids down. This was the perfect place! Four meals and drinks for less than $45. We had the pork and chicken in various configurations. All were outstanding! We moved to HI from the Kansas City area where we ate a lot of BBQ; Jake's would beat most of them in a taste test. The sauce is phenomenal. Definitely a must on any drove along the west coast!!!

  • April K.

AMAZING food. The brisket knocked my socks off! And the fish-of-the-day sandwich (ahi that day) was absolutely fantastic. SO fresh - with just the right amount of super fresh alfalfa sprouts! We also got the sampler platter - with ribs, brisket, pulled pork and BBQ chicken. Everything was good, and the BBQ sauce was amazing: complex, a little spicy, not too sweet, and with a depth and breadth of flavor that's very rare and precious to find in barbecue sauce nowadays. The picnic tables on the little lanai in the front were comfy and perfect, and there was a lovely laid back atmosphere that really made us feel like we got the real local Hawaiian experience :) The bathroom was clean and very easily accessible too! The poke shack right next door has very good plate lunches. The crab salad was especially good. There's also a cute little coffee shop just across the street that made the best mac nut iced latte I could possibly imagine.

  • Ric M.

Damn, son! That was some mighty fine BBQ! Very (very very) laid back place. We got pork, chicken, and brisket between the three of us, and it was to die for. Seriously. I'd put this in my top 2 or 3 BBQ places anywhere. Outstanding food. Good prices. Good portion sizes. Friendly service. Nice place to pull off the road and grab a bite. Make this the meal of the day though - enjoy it! Don't go here for lunch the day of a Luau; it'll wreck your Luau. It's that good.

  • Russell S.

Yum! Couldn't decide if I wanted poke or bbq, but my love for pig triumphed and I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with some coleslaw and baked beans. The food did not disappoint. The cute couple behind the counter bickered with each other as a small crowd of hungry folk waited in line...but no worries, the brief 5 minute wait allowed me to take in the scenery and hang out with the geckos chilling on the picnic tables. Simply served, pulled pork and bbq sauce on a bun, the flavors melt in your mouth and settle the soul similar to a cup of good kava. The cole slaw and baked beans were quite notable and highly complimented the sandwich. I'll definitely hit this spot up again.

Must try the lemonade!!! Yummy!!! Got the rack of ribs of course! About 30 bucks. Was good right amount of sauce pretty moist. Outdoor seating only. But the guys working was very accommodating! Hightlight was the fresh squeezed lemonade jus wish it was a larger size for the price

  • Don F.

We got a large rack of ribs to take home. They were great, soft, falling apart with great sauce. Great BBQ

  • Dwight H.

Most of the reviewers get it right: this place is about the food. Couple of points to emphasize: - Look for Mile Marker 106 if you are coming from Kona. Jakes is on the left past 106. - Ribs are meatier than you get in most of the places in the states. Bring an appetite. - Definitely call ahead. Days off vary by season. Currently it's Wed and Sunday closures. - Take a few minutes to talk with Jake. He's really friendly, and anyone who loves barbecue as much as he does is worth talking to. Conversation starter: ask about his sauce. Bottom line: the place is fabulous. Be sure to eat here. But remember, it's an island place, leave your stop-watch at home.

After a day of swimming, this place was a great local find. The bbq bowl was really good. My husband got the ribs and the meat was so tender. Aloha spirt is here!

    (4)
  • Eric K.

Brisket was better than the ribs which were nice and tender but a little sweet and under-spiced for my preference. Sides were ok. Solid for fast food BBQ

  • Yvonne M.

My hubby and I were craving BBQ for lunch and we happened to Yelp this place. It was pretty tasty. He ordered the Brisket Sandwich and the Pulled Pork over rice. I ordered the half slab of ribs over rice. He loved the Brisket Sandwich! I tried the Pulled Pork over rice and I would order that again. The ribs were fall off the bone tender. My only tiny complaint was the ribs were a lil fatty on the bottom, than I would have liked...but, it wasn't a deal breaker. The meat wasn't over smokey and the sauce had good flavor. The Slaw had raisins in it, which I've never had before and it was not bad. If you don't like raisins, they are big enough to where you can pick them out. Overall, I was pleased with the food and would go back. It's next to Da Poke Shack (big yellow sign)...we passed it because our GPS went out and a big Truck was blocking Jake's sign. We found it on the u-turn back, though. Lol!

I have to admit to judging BBQ on a different scale now that the city of Austin has changed my opinion of BBQ, for good. With that said, I had fairly low expectations of Big Jake's. I was, nonetheless, satisfied and a bit impressed with our meal. I say "our meal" because my wife and the step-son-in-law and I shared brisket, pulled pork and a rack of baby backs. The pulled pork was tender and flavorful, in fact I didn't think it needed the sauce that was ladled over it (disclosure: I view BBQ sauce as unnecessary and a cheating way of adding flavor to anything other than ribs...all the flavor you need should be created during the cook), his pulled pork was good enough to stand alone...and should have. The brisket was flavorful and tender, I should have asked for slices from the point, didn't, and ended-up with slices from the flat (still good, just a little leaner than I prefer)...insert same rant here about unnecessary sauce (at least serve it on the side). Then there was the full rack of baby-backs...so damn tender and good! Sauce is the right choice here, everything worked well on the ribs and made for an impressive offering. Oh, and don't pass-up his homemade lemonade, the perfect compliment to this meaty extravaganza. Thank goodness Da Poke Shack was closed today, we might have missed this treat.

Sooo good. We wanted to get out of the beach area for lunch and this was perfect. Got the pulled pork sandwich and some ribs. Smoked to perfection and bbq sauce is to die for!

  • Nina R.

Big Jake's Island BBQ is great! His BBQ sauce has hints of strawberry, citrus, and tangy flavors. It's neither too spicy or bland, but coats the succulent ribs perfectly. I've tried the chicken bowl, the full rack, the fresh catch (Ono), and the brisket. All were tender and tasty. Sitting outside on the mountain near Kona feels like a backyard experience. There are roosters crowing and hens walking around. The drive to Honaunau is fun and really cool to be in a local area. Jake is personable and fun to talk to. He's trained with the best of the pit masters. Enjoy!

  • Renna S.

Big Jake's Island BBQ is a must! Real deal bbq in South Kona. Smoker is right out front, and one whiff of the succulent smoke will hint at the goodness that Jake's has to offer. It's a bit of a ways out (about 30 mins South of Kailua Kona), but so worth it if you're craving some good bbq. Parking and seating is limited - seating is basically picnic tables under a tent/tarp, but weather is generally good so it's not such a big deal. Everything is made to order (sliced, put together, etc), so expect to wait a bit for your food. It's SO worth it. My favorite here is the Beef Brisket sandwich (sauce on the side), but EVERYTHING is good. Jake's uses a sweeter sauce with a hint of berry... or maybe cherry, I don't know, but if sweet BBQ sauces are not your thing, you may want to ask for no sauce or sauce on the side. I am a "dipper" so I ask for my sauce on the side, but I looooove the way the sauce compliments the meat. Check them out if you're heading this way, either from Volcano heading toward Kona or vice versa.

Stopped here on a rainy Kona day looking for some grub. Feasted upon the pulled pork plate. The pork was tender and delicious. The baked beans are a must have!

Roadside BBQ. Good stuff, I ordered the pull pork sandwich to give it a shot. The pull pork was traditional southern BBQ and came with sauce on it. The sauce style is molasses sweet so if your looking for mustard or vinegar based sauce this isn't your place. Also of course as I said it's ON the BBQ out of the kitchen so if your a purist you may want to tell them the ole "sauce on they side" deal... The BBQ was good. The pork was tender and juicy and had great notes of smoke. Some if it had the true smoke ring and concentrated smoke flavor. The bun for the sandwich was very fresh, this was soft white bread bun, don't know if he makes them himself but I do know it was lightly toasted and very soft. I had sides of slaw and beans. Slaw had raisins which is good, it was the creamy cole slaw style. The beans were OK, I was not really impressed with the beans at all. I didn't ask but they were tasting like canned to me. The dining area is covered patio with bench. Seating. It's beautiful in hawaii, even on the side of the road. All in all I would come back, maybe I'll try the ribs. Won't bother with the sides though, oh and the iced tea was a smallish cup which kinda bugged.

  • Kristen B.

MUST STOP HERE! You could drink the sauce it's that good. This is by far the best BBQ I have had on a long time. Laid back ambiance, especially for an authentic BBQ joint. Every bite of food was delicious and the amount of food you get for the price is really good deal. The kids ate the ribs down to the bone. We had the brisket which melted in your mouth, and the pulled-pork sandwich (so good: sauce, bread, meat...perfect). The plates came with potato salad, rice, peppers, and we had the fresh lemonade. Fresh, local, made from scratch seriously awesome comfort food! Friendly and sincere customer service. Defiantly worth the drive

Loved the brisket. Ribs were pretty darn good as well. Bread pudding is a must try. Service is great! Worth a stop for sure. Give it a try.

Food-gasmic-experience. Maybe it's the meat, maybe it's the lush tropical jungle, maybe it's the gigantic smoker parked out front, maybe it's Jake being all friendly and loving what he does - this is my BBQ gold standard, bar none. The meat is slow cooked, fall-apart, perfection. We had the brisket and ribs to give both a try. The ribs were fall off the bone awesome, the brisket was beyond phenomenal - tender, juicy, moist, awesome crust, delicious smoke flavor, thick serious smoke ring action, saucy - oh that sauce! Just finger-licking good! It's a Kansas style place, which has a sweeter sauce that perfectly compliments the smokiness of the meat. It's not over the top bitter smokey, nor timid, just well rounded and well seasoned BBQ goodness. Though the sides are yummy, I only have eyes for the meat. I'll cheat on it for the sauce.

  • Holly D.

Holy smokes! This place was amazing! Everything!!!! I had a half rack of ribs... My boyfriend got the pork butt. Off the hook delicious. Great tasting BBQ sauce... Awesome potato salad, baked beans and coleslaw. They put golden raisins in their coleslaw!!!! I wish I lived here... But I would probably be 600 lbs if I did. Place was amazing. I highly recommend. ;-)

  • Jacki P.

The food was really good. Great authentic smoke flavor on the chicken, even their yummy BBQ sauce couldn't take away from the flavor of the meat. There was only one girl working everything and it took her a while to get the food to us but she was making a point to check on us every once in a while. The dining was outside on some tarp covered picnic tables, and it was charming but im sure health and sanitation standards where a little less of a concern than covering the walls with tacky painted tin signs for Big Jake. The coleslaw was unique, I think it was mixed with yogurt, anise seeds and golden raisins. I could eat a bowl of just that and be satisfied. Be warned, don't come here if your a germ freak, this won't be your cup of tea.

Great BBQ, great location. Our group ordered a variety of plates and all were tasty. The fresh squeezed lemonade and iced tea were a total treat! After a long day of snorkeling this place hit the spot. From the four year to the 64 year old and all in between this was a winner with us.

  • Albert C.

We had a large group, so we were able to try a little bit of everything from the menu. We ordered a full rack of the ribs, brisket, pulled pork sandwich, and chicken. My favorite was the ribs. I loved the rub he uses, it was very flavorful. Also the lemonade was really good as well.

Never would have thought to try this place if I hadn't been next door buying some fish. The BBQ is really really yummy and I seriously gobbled it up faster than I every thought possible. An absolute try! I love that in the back are chickens just chillin!

  • Bev C.

BBQ in Hawaii??? We are lucky enough to be friends with Big Jake, so when we visit, we get the goods right off the huge smoker. The beef brisket, it truly melts in your mouth, my husband had the brisket sandwich & I chose the brisket plate ...OMG did I say mouth watering??? Can't wait to go back & get some more!

  • Caleb J.

A trip to Kona wouldn't be complete without eating at Big Jakes. I arrived a little too early, around 10:15, but the guy working was nice enough to fix my plate (the brisket plate) anyway. If you want southern style BBQ that tastes amazing, this is the place. The prices are reasonable and the food in incredible. Since moving away from Georgia, the only thing is miss is the great BBQ of the South. Big Jakes did a MORE than adequate job of satisfying that longing. From now on, any trip to Kona will also be a trip to Big Jakes.

  • Carolyn P.

Found this place on yelp. BBQ was really good - our group ordered the grilled fish sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, and best of all was the brisket. All orders came with a side of baked beans and coleslaw - both were really delicious. Only took off one star because the ambiance was very minimal. Only seating were picnic tables out back. Its your basic road side stop with a walk up order window. They call out that your order is ready and you walk up to the window and get your food. Prices were decent but the food was excellent - great BBQ sauce! So glad we had the chance to try out Big Jake's BBQ!

Great barbeque! We were craving a hearty lunch and stopped at Big Jake's on the basis of the great Yelp reviews. We had a good feeling when we pulled up and saw the big smoker rig out front. :) I ordered the brisket and my husband got the pulled pork, and then we shared. Everything was delicious. The Hawaiian style bbq is a little sweeter, I think, than bbq where we're from, but it was all delicious and tender, with great flavor in the meat. The service at Big Jake's was friendly and helpful, too. And it was kind of nice just to chill out outside on their picnic tables. They've got a cute little patio right off the highway, but enclosed with native plants so you're not staring at the road. Our lunch companion was a rooster that was wandering around the grounds. :)

Delicious! A Hawaiian twist on traditional American BBQ. We all had the pulled pork sandwich which came with Cole slaw and beans. $10.95 each. Jo made lemonade was refreshing- cold and sweet. Would eat here again!!

  • Patricia Y.

I don't like American BBQ. The strong vinegar flavor + smokiness + sweetness just doesn't appeal to me. However, I have discovered that I enjoy American BBQ with a Hawaiian twist. I ordered the pulled pork sammie, and it didn't have that typical "in yo face" strong BBQ flavor. The vinegar/smokey/sweetness was much more subdued, and SO much more enjoyable than any other crap american bbq I've eaten in the past. Loved that the food came out PIPING hot. It's easy to quickly drive by places on hwy 11, so make a point to slow down and try all the road side restaurants!

Really good BBQ. We got the brisket dish and brisket sandwich and both were great. This place is on Highway 11 near the road that leads to Kealakekua Bay, so Jake's makes for a nice stop after spending a morning kayaking and snorkeling. They close early (6/6:30 pm like most places in this area) so probably a better stop for lunch than dinner.

Actually heard about this place through the lovely lady at the South Kona Fruit Stand. Extremely casual, BBQ IMMACULATE! I had the brisket plate. Served with purple potato salad/mash and rice, my fave ! Of course. :) and a pickle. Coleslaw. The sauce was killer, sweet mostly with some spice. Loved it. I wish I could go back right now.

Yummm!!! Brisket and pork butt! Wow!!! Best $25 meal for two on the big island. Worth going out of your way! Quaint outdoor picnic tables. It often rains up there in the rainforest, or is misty. So get it to go and eat in your car! LOL

Most amazing BBQ I've ever had. Had the brisket and pulled pork. Big Jake definitely knows what he is doing. Super friendly and has lots of hilarious memorabilia. Must visit if you ever go to the big island!

We thought we'd done it all for points south of Kailua-Kona, swimming with the Manta Rays, spelunking, kayaking, and snorkeling. That is until we discovered Big Jake's at mile marker 106. The pulled pork sandwich was meaty, smokey, tasty on a toasted bun with a mild pepper. (See my photo.) Complimented nicely with cole slaw with golden raisins and baked beans. The ribs . . . the tender meat fell off the bone and the smokey BBQ chicken . . . taught me how smoke flavor really tasted. Yes, my friend and I ate all three dishes! (Burp) Might want to call ahead. I've been telling all my Oahu friends about Big Jake's. One went on a Monday but they were closed. The posted sign said Gone Fishing. Call first, you're gonna love Big Jake's!

This place was such a surprise. The BBQ is excellent and their sauce is heavenly. The potato salad and beans are good accompaniments. We liked the bbq sauce so much that we had to take some home to the mainland. The smoked chili with rice is also excellent! With the outside seating, definitely be prepared to be eaten by mosquitoes and bees, which is a part of Island life! The food is worth it, though.

Best BBQ on the Big Island! Keep an eye out for this place on the Mauka side of Mamalahoa Hwy. on the way to Captain Cook.

This place has the best overall BBQ experience on the Big Island. Great price, great ribs, AWESOME pulled pork sandwich (which is the way I usually go) with pineapple slaw and beans. Can't help but stop by every time I drive by!

after a long drive heading back to Kona, we stopped by this swanky roadside BBQ dying of hunger. my dad, sister and i ordered the full rack of babyback ribs a la carte, and their best selling pulled pork sandwich. they only have outdoor seating, which we sat next to some bright green geckos. cool! the food came out fast and hott! the ribs were very saucysaucy, and the sauce was smokey and tangy. we scarfed down that bad boy like there was no tomorrow! the sandwich was also really good. it came with coleslaw and baked beans. we also stopped by next door @the liquor store for some icecream&melon bars...mmhm!
