I love here the margaritas are so good. Especially with the li hing mui rimmed glass and the pitchers yummers. They also have margaronas!:) The nachos is so good! The taquitos and flautas! The deep fried ice cream...

GROSS A trip to Ruben's is typically a joyful, satisfying experience. Between the most authentic Mexican food can find at a commercial restaurant in Hilo (here's looking at you, with disappointed eyes, Lucy's), and their always-on-the-mark Margaritas (and thus far the only place on island they do the fun Margarona - 7oz corona upside down in a margarita). -good drinks probably due to OG auntie behind the bar that I've never seen not working when I've been there. Even the service is above average when busy, and the wall decorations remind me hole in the walls that have nothing contrived about their authenticity. Perhaps is was just due time. Don't go out to eat too much, but have worked in the restaurant business (although one wouldn't have to have any professional dining experience to recognize the filthy-ness I will soon elaborate on) long enough to know even the most basic sanitary procedures. ----- It all began with a loud sneeze I heard behind the bar (after already been seated and served our first round of Margaronas). I brought my gaze up to see our waitress standing in the spot where the noise came from. Having not seen it, I assumed she sneezed into her arm or at least hands, and gave the benefit of the doubt wasn't even her. But as my gaze was still up, I saw her immediately then go to the end of the bar and grab a bar napkin to blow her nose, right there, with little or no restraint to expunge her snot. "K, gross" I thought to myself. But still no real harm-no foul. Although now I wanted to settle my mind and see if she went right to wash her hands.... .... She never did. Not for the rest of the 25 minutes my friend and I were there (granted she could have washed her hands back in the kitchen, but based on how she unfailingly checked herself in the mirror every time before going back there, I'd bet she was too distracted to remember hygiene). After mentioning to my friend of the first nose-blowing-no-hand washing incident he turned to look and we both saw her do a bare palm nose swipe. We were both immediately disgusted. (She continued to blatantly -and/or mindlessly- wipe her nose with her hand or shirt visibly throughout the restaurant) We didn't even want to remind her about the chips that we had asked for with our drinks anymore in case she used her hands to grab the chips. She seemed much more interested in talking story with coworkers, or eating mangos (sheesh, at least go into the kitchen to eat sloppy food with your fingers, not where customers can see!), than with checking the 3 tables she had (luckily it was slow). And although it was slow she never checked up on anyone (I know, I know, the flag is supposed to be up, but when you only have a couple tables, simple eye contact on a table of empty plates and drinks should send a hint of "HEY! We're pau!") -had to literally put the flag up to ask for our check. It took her 8 minutes to notice (yes, I timed it), at which point she asked one of the waitresses who had just clocked in to come bus our table; we just asked this person to get our check, which she did very timely and was a nice near-palate cleanser of the experience. After being so appalled by the grossness of the situation I asked myself if I was just being petty and or too judgmental.. Then I remembered not to let false empathy get the best of me, that girl was being negligent towards the health of the patrons. (Like bussing a table, throwing away rubbish into the bin then immediately turning and grabbing strAws!?? to put into people's margaritas!?!? Ew.) Jobs suck and I realize serving tourists all day probably is draining to the soul, and Also that urgency is not part of the island style; but show some aloha spirit, you may as well spat on everyone's table when you walked by and farted on our plates. The gum chewing while taking orders was a nice touch as well. Sorry if this review gets you in trouble, girl with the butterfly tattoos behind your ear, though I am not sorry if it prevents some one (like a baby or low immunity-person) to get sick and physically vomit (like my eyes figuratively did) because of your lack of respect toward a sanitary eating experience for everybody.

Worst Mexican food...ever! Started off with the chips and salsa. The salsa was spoiled yet still served to us. Asked for a side of guacamole instead which needed a little salt and lime juice. Finally found the salt it was missing when they brought my entree. The chili relleno was so salty that i was only able to eat a few bites. The tamale fell apart. The huge chunks of pork inside were dry. The only thing edible on that plate was the beans which had as much flavor as can beans would have. I almost laughed when the waitress asked if I wanted a box for my food. Hell no! If you're looking for a Mexican food kick, avoid this place like the plague! Take it from this MexiAmerican, this place is not worth your hard earned money!

I love this place! I always order the Chili Relleno and Chicken Flauta or Carne Asada combo. Along with that, need to have a Li Hing Mui Margarita or Margarona. The restaurant has enough room to fit a nice sized group of 20. Hang out, drink and laugh the night away. They are open for lunch and dinner which is awesome! The food is great and I'm always leaving the place full and satisfied!

THIS IS THE GREATEST MEXICAN FOOD IVE HAD EVER. I'm sorry to over exaggerate but this food was amazing. I cleared my plate along with my teammates. I've never had such good sour cream or such tasty beans. Idk what they put in their meat but it makes you keep eating it il until it's gone and you want to palu. The service was great and they split all of our checks by name, so convenient. We had to wait a while..but the food was so worth it. Better than any place I have had on Oahu. I wish I could come to Hilo to take care of my Mexican food craving always just to this one place. I love it here!

You need to try their lychee coconut margaritas. It is the best... like seriously... not kidding. Oh and their pozole is also one of my favorites. Check them out. You won't regret it

The worst Mexican food I have ever had in my entire life. I wish I could give Reuben's Mexican Food ZERO stars.

I've been coming here since 1999. Lucy's, Laquins and Taco Bell have nothing on this place. I've only once had a problem with the waitstaff and he was immediately fired. All of the food is good and I do sample around in their menu. Cali-mex is not good. Tex-Mex is! The salsa is fresh and spicy, just the way I like it. You'll never find a better chili relleno. I tried to. OK, charging for chips and salsa is not cool. Beans and rice are awesome. I just can't think of a bad meal I have ever had there. I've probably had half of their menu and even ordered off menu. But, I can tell you this, I'm never again going to the other restaurants I mentioned above. Oh, the sign counting the margaritas, yea, I was one of the firsts. I've clocked up a lot of those numbers. Relax, you'll enjoy Reuben's.

Great Mexican Food!! Best in Hilo I think... I went to Lucy's Mexican "Restaurant" and found out that it's basically a Cafeteria over there... Huge portions here at Reubens!! I just went on a 10 mile Lava Hike today and starving!! I couldn't even finish it all. The Margarita I had was great too! I recommend Ruebens over the cheap feeling you get at Lucy's Mexican "Restaurant"

Headed to Hilo for some family business, wanted something tasty and had been recommended this place before. On the bay front, stopped in, place was all but empty. That's okay on a Tuesday afternoon. We sat at the bar and ordered a couple ceviche tostadas and a couple beers. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. The ceviche was fresh and tasty. Came with a generous helping of fresh avocado on the side. No draft beer or I would go 5 stars for all around good food and appeal. My companion had a generous tasty margarita too. No complaints. Will I go back, most definitely.

I came from the epicenter of Mexican food... California... So you could call me a Mexican food snob ;D... I discovered that the Mexican food I had on the island just wasn't up to par. Everybody told us to go to Lucy's... It was alright, and the service was good but at the end of the day the food was kinda just "meh". Our friends finally convinced us to go to Ruebens. This is way more like the Mexican food I'm use to! It was quite good, I will definitely return. Only thing I didn't enjoy was the alcoholic drinks. We ordered a Lihing pitcher margarita, which was pretty awful. We tried drinking it, but we didn't put much of a dent in it. We later found out the pitcher was $30... OUCH! That is why I gave this restaurant 3 stars instead of 4. Work on the drinks, and especially the price on pitchers and you would have a real good thing going. =)

Not good, and that is putting it mildly. Friends wanted to go here. Not good at all. Taco bell anyone? It's way betta.

Excellent service , friendly fast. The guacamole was super fresh and homemade chips. All dishes were excellent . The crab enchiladas were creamy and fresh with the chicken mole was moist and flavorful. Carne asada was tender and spiced just right . Prices were well worth the amount of food.

Yummy yummy yummy food!!!! He house margarita however tasted like lighter fluid. Not good. The food though made it worth the trip and will return on next visit to Hilo. Maybe just water with the food next time though?

It's been awhile since I last ate there, but recently made the trip back and wasn't disappointed at all. Took my wife there to celebrate her birthday. The wait staff was very friendly and courteous throughout our meal. My favorite dish at Reuben's is the Steak Ranchero. Loved it back then and still tasted greated when I ate it again. The only drawback was when waiting for our order, I pigged out on the chips and salsa... bad mistake, because since I pre-filled my tummy with an appetizer, I couldn't finish my Ranchero. But I did... slowly, finally managed to complete the meal. I was stuffed to the max after that. I made the mistake of ordering the tortilla, next time I gotta remember to tell the waitress it's not needed (the meal was full enough as it is). If I had room for dessert... it would've been the fried ice cream indeed!

Far and away the best Mexican restaurant on the island. Have been going there for more than 30 years. The food is well prepared, presented, tasty and delicious. Service consistently excellent and the Margaritas unbeatable. Go now, you will be glad you did!

Had lunch at Ruben's the other day and the food was pretty good. Had a beef quesadilla, and it was easily the best beef, ( not steak/Carne Asada) I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. It was more like a pot roast not that cheap stuff Taco Bell uses! So why the 2 stars. Here are 3 reasons. First everyone knows when you sit at a Mexican restaurant, chips and salsa are automatic. Not only were they NOT offered but when I inquire I was told they were $1.50. Not cool. 2nd- had a side of sour cream and they charged me 1 dollar. Charging for these sides and condiments is greedy! And lastly, A coke was 2.25, not bad but it tasted awful. Either dirty lines or real cheap cola. But the kicker is. When I got a refill ( bottles or cans weren't available) they charged me another dollar! Everyone knows fountain soda cost line .15 cents so overall 3.25 for bad cola combines with 1 and 2 is not how you get customers, at least this customer to come back! If I were to go back I'd only order for takeout to avoid the bullshit fees then again they probably charge 1 dollar for takeout!

  • Taylor L.

horrible customer service !!!!!!!!!! waterd down margaritas & when we let the server know , she just gave us a dirty look and said "what do you want me to do about it " the bill was 80$ , totally NOT worth it . the food was okay , service was horrible ! will not be going back

knowing there's loads of competition, let me tell you how I chose Rubens to be a fan. Two of us decided to hit up every Mexican restaurant on the Big Island while ordering the same identical dishfor comparison. I bounced the idea of homemade Chile Relleno off the closest friend I know from old mexico and they agreed. If a talented cook can create a perfect relleno the other items should follow suit. Only thing I should add is a noticeable difference between the talent of the owner (husband/wife with her cooking) and during her vacation or time off. its a negligible difference except to a Relleno contest. I shouldnt need to spell out Reubens Hilo location maintained top spot on the list. From Chicken Mole to crab enchiladas, you'll be merrily sated at Reubens. A decently experienced bar for mixed drinks is welcomed too. Have fun, eat heartily and cherish a delicate Relleno.for modest fare and burgeoning girth.

Having been to pesto cafe before, I thought I'd give this a go. Tried the beef quesadilla based on one of the more recent reviews. Sloppy. The tortilla was soft, like it was cooked in a microwave, not crispy like I'm used to. Tons of beef, hardly any cheese. Actually wasn't even sure if there was any until I noticed some cheese strings in it. Very soupy like. Beef was tasty, but it was more of a beef-a-dilla than quesadilla. Hard to eat, not worth it. Go to pesto cafe next door. Hardly "Mexican" flavor. Chips were cold, salsa was eh. Service- poor to fair. Dropped off plates. Never refilled drinks.

Sorry folks, but I don't understand the vehemently negative reviews. Reuben's is not for the faint of heart! Leave your prissy attitudes at the door and prepare to enjoy yourself. I've been eating at Reuben's since 1979 and love it. The service is excellent and the food always tasty, filling and fresh. The food brings back memories of wonderful meals in Baja California that I enjoyed when I worked there years ago. If Reuben's really was as bad as some reviewers say, why has it been packed and popular seven days a week for over 35 years?

    (5)
  • Zoey P.

I try not to give overly negative reviews too often, but I don't think I'll ever go back to this place. I'll give it one star for the food and three for the service (which was fine, not spectacular). I had the chile relleño and a cheese enchilada. It came with beans and rice (chips and salsa were extra, salsa was bland and watery). The beans were okay, but rice was way too garlicky. I LOVE garlic, but I know when something is too much. The cheese enchilada wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't smothered with this reddish brown enchilada sauce (but actually was an enchilada gravy) that was way too salty. I typically like aggressive seasoning and I think I have a high tolerance for salt, but this enchilada sauce was so salty I couldn't finish my meal and I didn't really want to anyway. If you want Mexican food, go to Lucy's. It's only two blocks away, and even though you have to bus your own tables, the ambiance is brighter and more inviting. The food is also way better.

So I decided to give Reuben's another try because my go to Mexican fix, Lucy's, was closed for the week in honor of summer break and the 4th. As you can probably tell by my rating I was very disappointed, once again. This time around we ordered differently thinking we just picked poorly the first time. It took a good 30+ minutes to get our food, had to flag down the waitress three times for water (each time rudely asking us what we needed), and our food wasn't that great. I ordered the chile relleno ala carte style. This is my usual at Lucy's so I figured why not compare the two. The overall portion was half that of Lucy's and more expensive. Plus it had a distinct, and slightly disgusting taste to it. I didn't mention this in my last review but feel it's a good time to do so now. They are the ONLY Mexican restaurant I have been to where you have to pay for chips and salsa! Crazy right?!? Well...it's true! Oh, and the bowl of salsa was only a quarter way full... Not only will I NOT be back due to poor service and less than par food, I won't go back because we both got sick from the food later on that night :(

We decided to give Reuben's a try after checking out the Hilo farmer's market, which is conveniently close to Rueben's. If you drive, you should try to park once you see a free spot, parking can be tricky in the area. We were seated immediately and ordered chips and salsa. It's salsa verde, and is a little on the spicy side compared to what I'm used to. I ordered a cheese quesadilla with rice and beans. The quesadilla was plopped right in the middle of a molten layer of beans and then the top was squirted with a ton of sour cream. It would have been good if the quesadilla wouldn't have been sunk in beans and sour cream. It was a gooey mess and was difficult to eat. I really enjoyed the rice, it was a different flavor than what I'm used to. It tasted like cilantro and onion and a few other things. The beans were a little on the salty side. My husband enjoyed the shredded chicken nachos he ordered. It was a huge portion, which I suppose validates the price tag. Service was meh...I've had better and worse. You put up the Mexican flag at your table when you need service. I'm not a fan of that procedure.

My date and I came to Reuben's yesterday, Sunday afternoon, and the restaurant was quite empty, we didn't mind though. We were greeted by our very friendly server and were told to sit where we'd like. Reuben's is all kinds of Mexican flair, from the painted pictures of women in traditional garb to the many green, red, and white ribbon-like things (my mind went blank) hanging from the ceiling. It has fiesta written all over it. Me gusta! There is even a margarita tally holder that lets you know how many margaritas have been served, there have been a ton served! I think that only speaks to how good they must be. Onto more pressing matters, the food. My date ordered the beef quesadilla, which was massive (sorry, I was so into my own dish I didn't think to take a picture). The beef was so tender and buttery in taste, it was delicious. I ordered the shrimp ceviche on their "New Food Items" menu. I'd never tried ceviche before and always wanted to. It was very good, very fresh. The combination of lime juice in the shrimp, fresh onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and the crispy fried tostada was delicious! I highly recommend it. One could also order that as an appetizer to share, but I wanted it to myself. For dessert we split the fudge (yes...fudge) lava cake. It was smaller than I had hoped, but ever so rich and decadent. I would have also wanted this for myself. It was a very satisfying meal and I think we'll be coming back again soon!

Spent the day playing tourist in Old Hilo Town. Stopped by Rubens for some lunch and a nice refreshing Margarita. Food was awesome exploding with flavors, Fish Tacos was Ah-Mazeballs! Margarita was refreshing the perfect amount of sour and the kick of Tequila was all up my alley. This place is definitely a recommender! Perfect for that once in awhile hot sunny Hilo day.

Nice atmosphere. Friendly service. Nothing pretentious at all. Just a good mom and pop stop. Very low key. Good Mexican food for Hawaii. I like the place always have. If you want a hot lunch or dinner with a really cold beer this is the place to go. I always stop here when passing through Hilo.

Rueben's was fantastic! We walk in and the reaturaunt is decorated in red, white, and green colors. Very Mexican and very festive! Our server was very prompt and extremely knowledgable of the menu. My husband got the chicken enchilada plate with rice and beans while I got the (HUGE) flaunta plate with double rice. Which by the way I highly recommend. It is well worth the $15! We waited no longer than 15 minutes for our food and we both liked what we got. Service was great and quick and the food was excellent! I would def recommend this place to anyone in Hilo craving Mexican food. It is well worth your while to stop in for a bite!

This evening was a goodnight.. Margarita & carne asada made up for my last visit. I had a combo of carne asada and chile relleno that was a huge portion as there other dishes. I also had a strawberry li hing mui margarita. That was so yummy! It was nice and refreshing on this humid evening in hilo! I can't wait to try their guava one next time. For 6.75 or cheaper (depending on what you get) you cannot go wrong! So my conclusion, I'm on the bandwagon with everyone else for Reuben's margaritas. :)

I'm being kind giving three stars.. The food was bland no taste. The drinks were mixer not really authentic. The portion were fair size which is a shame considering it was bland. We hit it on a busy night so I always give a second try if I caught them on a bad night. The service was good the people there friendly and trying to work together since it was busy. Not very impressed at all.. Had much better Mexican Food.. Place was clean and organized.. Really disappointed a bit.. They could have a really high quality place with some tweaking...

In one of my many sporadic adventures I moved to Hawaii to make films in the most beautiful places in the world. In Hilo, unless you have a car it's tough to get about. Enter Reuben's! The staff was always so courteous to us. We would be in at least a couple times a week. The food is good. It's certainly not the best but again, pretty damn good! Why this place deserves 5 stars? It's all about the experience. This place sits along the beautiful coast, welcome to Hawaii! They never rushed us, always was so accommodating. I can recall onetime the bartender recognized us, knowing we always ordered strawberry margaritas I see her start pouring... And pouring... And pouring! Once it was almost full of the amazing tequila she grabs the strawberry purée and splashes strawberry into the cup full of tequila. She then looks at me and says "splash of strawberry, strawberry margarita!" Are you trying to kill me?! She laughs. It was a joke if course, yet, isn't that what makes you want to come back, people who love people. It makes all the difference. I highly recommend. Granted its an odd choice being I'm Hawaii with such fresh alternative and food sources but it is worth it should you have a craving!

Food was excellent, loved the enchilladas, beans, and carne. I especially loved their rice, not sure what they put in it, but don't change it! It is mouthwateringly delicious. All of the food items we ordered were spectacular, even the chips and guacamole! Chips were definitely home made, which I really appreciated. The pitcher of maragritas that we ordered were pretty bomb too. Loved it all. Service was a bit weird though, we were certainly well taken care of, but by about 3 different servers. All of them were nice and attentive, I guess they work as a team but it was strange because I really couldn't tell who our primary server was lol. The decorations were the perfect touch for the restaurant. Prices were pretty reasonable, a little bit on the high side - depending on what you order, but it is good quality. I really enjoyed myself. I would certainly come back!

I hesitate to even give this one star... My friends and I stumbled in here randomly to grab a quick bite after chillin at the park in Hilo. Everything on the menu is extremely overpriced, which would be fine if my cheese quesadilla wasn't clearly microwaved. Speaking of microwaves, almost everything was obviously cooked in a microwave or tasted like it did all the way down to the "Spanish" rice (The steam-in-the-bag kind from the grocery store is better than this). It was so bad that slowly we all started to chime in about what a bummer it was that we wasted so much money here, but ultimately my friends and I all decided not to let it get us down. Still, if I only warn one other person then I have done a good deed and had to warn others so that maybe I could stop someone else from spending almost $100 on the worst "Mexican" food in the United States.

    (1)
  • Kristin V.

You don't come here for the food necessarily (not saying they don't have good nachos or anything, but for a California born girl, it's not the kind of Mexican food I want when I'm craving something authentic)...you come here for the Margaritas! Best in town anywhere. Mix it up: Lilikoi with a li hing mui rim, mango with lime, whatever. They're all good, and you can go sit on the beach with your buzz afterward.

    (4)
  • Mabel H.

The food is the best Mexican you'll find on the Big Island, which really isn't saying all that much...it's great for Hawaii but people from California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas who are used to good Mexican food will be disappointed. The flavour and quality of ingredients is on par with El Torito or any large chain of sit-down, full service Mexican restaurants on the mainland, i.e. mediocre, but the portions are large and the atmosphere is fun and festive. The ceviche is actually very good. And you'll soon forget the average quality of the food because Sue the bartender/co-owner pours the best and STRONGEST margaritas in the state!

    (4)
  • Allan H.

Must say the best authentic Mexican food in the greater Hilo area hands down. With that being said if you don't think it is then you really have no pallet whatsoever.

We came back for a margarita, sat at the bar, and sorry to say, it was just bad. Our margaritas just tasted like ice with some cheap tequila. Barely a hint of mixer or citrus flavor. Woman bartender was outright unfriendly at first, although she softened a little over time. Probably a mistake that we did not say anything about how bad it was, maybe she would have fixed it.... we just wanted to get out of there ASAP. If I go back, I won't sit at the bar, that's for sure.

Arrived in Hilo hungry after a full day on the volcano. I wasn't sure as the place looked quite but upon entering it had a few diners and more arrived once we sat down. Huge menu and helpful staff. I have an issue with gluten and the lady serving us was helpful and I had no issues with the chicken tacos I ordered. Would totally go back

My Husband had the carne asada, the meat was soft and tasty, his flour tortilla was soft, just the way he likes it. Our Daughter had the ground beef soft taco but didn't care for the meat too much, so she are with me. I ordered the shredded beef nacho deluxe. We enjoyed it. The portion was HUGE! It would have gotten 5 stars but the older lady behind the bar wasn't so friendly (Even though we didn't sit at the bar) not to be mean but she was very grouchy looking:(

Admittedly not the best Mexican I've ever had, but pretty damn good and beggars can't be choosers. Let's face it, Hawaii and especially Hilo's Mexican population is basically nonexistent. Decor is pretty tacky with the velvet paintings and viva Mexico banners, but it's part of their charm. As someone else mentioned it's a big improvement over the dark and dingy look it had when I was in high school. It's a fun place with fast friendly service and above average food that makes it a must eat when I'm in town. My mom is a regular and says it's the only Mexican place in town where beef = tender shredded beef vs hamburger meat like taco bell. Always a plus. The one thing that surprised me is that her burrito didn't even seem to be wrapped (see my pic). I know it all ends up the same way in your stomach but that's a really half ass wrap job -looks like they just slapped a tortilla on top of the beef.

Average I had a chicken and a cheese enchilada- the sauce was a bit bland. Large portion. No free chips. Husband had a fajita like dish with shrimp- it was ok. The only thing unique about this place was it took way longer than most Mexican places to get the food. It's no Mexican Town for you Detroiters/Windsorites!

  • Ian D.

Pretty good Mexican food. Tasty carne asada. Not bed price. Large portions. Worst margarita ever. Had to add sugar and order an extra shot of tequila to make it come close to normal. Really, it can't be that hard to make a reasonable margarita--one shot of tequila, some ice and some margarita mix--as basic as it gets.

Reuben's never fails to have me leaving full and satisfied! My regular dish that I order when I go here is the two enchiladas. But everything that I have ever had from Reuben's is also great! It's at a great downtown location and has a great authentic atmosphere! The plates are always loaded with food and the service is always fast and friendly! If you're downtown and are looking to sit down for a nice Mexican dinner then this is the place you'll want to go to!

  • Ramon R.

We had the fish taco plate and green chicken enchilada plate. Terrible and overpriced. I would have rather eaten at Taco Bell, and I do not even like taco bell. They charge you $1.50 for the chips and salsa, and no free refills on horchatas. The service was ok. The fully stocked bar is the one good thing here. I would come back for the bar, but stay away from the nasty food.

This style of Mexican food is the same drek we used to get years ago in California. Bean and cheese heavy, same old same old, been there, won't go back. Thankfully, Lucy's opened up for as close to a Mexican taqueria as one can get here. Hard to find a decent meal on the Bayfront. This isn't one of the good ones, which are only Puka Puka kitchen (lunch only) and Pesto.

You have to pay for chips and salsa which is fine but the chips are not good. The salsa is really good and really hot! I had fish tacos which were pretty good. The beans are excellent and the rice is pretty good. The margaritas are strong. All in all, better than I expected for Mexican food in the Aloha state.

Where am I? Is this the same Rueben's that I grew up with?? It is festive, clean and bright with rockin new furniture, decorations and it feels warm and fun! I'm impressed Rueben's, you did a great job. I love this make-over. Chips and salsa were delicious as always and the food seems to be getting better than I remember too. Maybe the light atmosphere helped but whatever it is, I'm not complaining. I was happy to help increase the number of margaritas sold too. I kinda wish they came in real margarita glasses instead of plastic soda cups though. That's my only suggestion.

Lillikoi Margaritas are to die for!!! Food has been good every time I have come as well :)... Only criticism is they have been really busy every time we have had dinner here, so sometimes you have to wait a little to get served.

Best Mexican food in Hilo! & seriously the best margaritas & margaronas by far!!! Always on point with the perfect mix & consistency (blended is best!). Cheers! Their chicken nachos, (wet) burritos & chile verde are amazingggg! & portions are huge!

I had high hopes for this restaurant. My husband and i love Mexican food, but rarely eat it. We came in hungry. I ordered the carnitas, and they were not bad just ok. My husband got the beef chimichanga. He was not impressed. First it came with guacamole on it which wasn't in the description and he hates it, and the meat was stringy and chewy. We left not impressed with the food, the prices, or the service.

Another pleasant surprise. The Top Shelf Margarita's are very good and strong. The Chips , Guac, Salsa are all homemade and Spicy! Next time we are going to stay for dinner. Service was very good.

I lived and worked in Hilo for a while and have had to go there for the past 12 years for business trips. I'm from LA via Mexico and was really happy to find Reuben's, which does really have pretty much "authentic" LA-style Mexican food. From Hilo, I was transferred to Kauai, then to Oahu--no joy on the Mexican food scene. I have to cook my own chilaquiles, chorizo and eggs, anything con mole and so on if I want it to taste close to the Mexican food I ate growing up and until I moved to Hawaii in 1999. BUT--IMHO--Reuben's is pretty dang good. I was back in Hilo for a week around T'giving and insisted on eating at Reuben's at least three times while I was there. While I was not in Hilo, they added lengua tacos, pollo con mole, pozole and menudo to the menu. I asked the waitress if they would just serve me the lengua with mole over it. I was trying to come close to the lengua con mole that the now-closed Barragan's in Echo Park, where I went so often, used to serve. It was chopped up, not in slices like the lengua at the old Barragan's, the mole had a bit too much chile in it, and I don't care for the raw onions in my lengua con mole. But it was, all in all, pretty good. At least, it's the best that I've had in Hawaii, which isn't a difficult task. The next day I had their menudo and--wonder of wonders!!--they also sell Tecate beer in cans!! Having come back not too long ago from a month of visiting home in Baja California, I realized how much I missed having a good Mexican food restaurant on Oahu. Ii don't know of any other restaurants in Hawaii that even serve Tecate beer. The menudo at Reuben's is just really basic but it tastes SOOO good. I didn't even have to have a hangover to make it work for me! The pozole is adequate, too. Nothing on Reuben's menu is really great but it IS your basic LA Mexican food and that is my comfort food. I love that Reuben's has all sorts of flavored blended margaritas, that they serve them by the full or half-pitcher, and that their food ain't great but always is acceptably good, served while it's fresh, and their service is great. It did surprise me that there have been new Mexican restaurants (and, no, neither Maui Tacos nor Taco Bell counts). What surprised me more was that I heard some people speaking Spanish in a store or in the mall more than once. So--no, I don't think Reuben's is a fine dining experience, but then, I don't think it claims to be either. The food portions are adequate, the service is quick, efficient and polite, and the quality of the food is consistently pretty good. OH yeah-- and they serve cold Tecate in cans (like it should be served) and some kick-butt delicious margaritas. There are "papel picado" banners around the place and it was definitely cleaned up since the last time I went there.

Food was great 4/5 had crispy fish tacos with beans and rice. Banana fosters was too small- small pieces of bananas on the side. Service was terrible- I sipped on lukewarm water all night and my friend that had ice in her water ran out and they kept forgetting. The waitress- young female with bangs swept to side was in a hurry and kept rushing us to order fast

The food was pretty bad... I had the carne asada and it left a lot to be desired. Also had a tamale and was disappointed. The worst part though was the service.

I don't know why the poor reviews as this place rivlas over 90% of the Mexican restaurants on Oahu. And yes, we are from CA so we're exposed to lot's of Mexican food as well. My family used to go to Luquin's in Pahoa Village a lot, which is actually pretty decent too but ambiance and location, I prefer Reuben's. All in all they do have a really good shredded beef, which is what I strangely judge all my mexican restaurants on. =) Quick recap: Pro's: -Home made chips/salsa -Shredded Beef is good -Good Location, roomy -Good ambiance, clean has TV's for watching sports etc -Huge portions Cons: - Pricing, eh it's the island we all pay for shipping costs -Parking, it can be hard to find in the area

Let me explain the five stars. A restaurant is just like any other experience. It is not only about the food. If that were true, we couldn't rely on Yelp or any other review because our tastes are so different. When I first came to this island, I tried Reuben's and had I written a review, it would have been 2 stars. Why? I was used to California style Mexican food, AKA Fresh-Mex. This is old style. As old style, it is yummy. It is near perfection. Not only that, it is Mexican food served with aloha. And the bartender is truly talented. Gotta appreciate a good, a really good bartender. This is a family place, but you can see a lot of locals come here, especially couples. One reason is, the feeling here is just plain good. If you are looking for fresh-Mex you will not be happy, but if it is good old time Mexican food you like and you are hungry, you will be SO happy that you tried this, and saved up some money for a ritzier dinner somewhere else another time.

My family and I stumbled in here by accident. We're from Los Angeles, so we're used to having good Mexican food. To be honest, our expectations were pretty low, but we didn't have a lot of options and didn't have time to explore. Bottom line, everyone loved their meal. The food and service was great. I ordered a chicken enchilada plate and it was exactly how I like it. Even the beans were flavorful. If this place were in LA, I'd return frequently. I'll definitely be back every time I visit Hilo.

Disappointing! No chips and salsa to start. Chicken mole was the worst ever. Super salty, no other real flavor. Beer was the only quality controlled product. No chocolate Hauspie or bananas foster for dessert. Only the Flan, which was the most solid custard ever made. Maybe something else is delicious, just not the Mole.

Absolutely the worst Mexican food I've had in over 50 years! Chips and salsa were in edible. Food was way over cooked and slopped together on the plate. They actually put brow loco moco gravy on my chili relleno!

Mr. Smidgens is Puerto Rican Mexican a Mexarican if you will. My two associates suggested that we go to Reuben's today for lunch. They were wondering what I would think since I get to eat some of the most delicious Mexican food around back home in Austin, TX. Let Mr. Smidgens paint you a picture with his imaginary brush......... I grew up with fresh homemade tortillas and some of the spiciest chile around. I went in with very low expectations. The sticker shock was immediate as I opened the menu and saw the prices. Meh, no biggie. To be expected. The service was awesome and the steak tacos (#6) I ordered were delicious as I drizzled some chile verde onto them and then poured it on once my mouth started to burn. I love that feeling! The chile was hot but flavorful. The corn tortillas were fresh and the refried beans con queso were just right once I mixed them with the rice and chile verde. MMMM...just typing this review is making my mouth water. I will have to say I will have to go back and try some of the many many many many many...deep breath...many many many many tequilas. Muchos gracias Reuben's

Authentic Mexican food, with decent prices. The restaurant had a makeover done, which looks brighter and a lot cleaner. Reuben is very friendly and his family works very hard to keep the restaurant running seven days a week!! For people who appreciate real Mexican food, it's delicious. For those who don't like Mexican, don't give Reuben's a bad rating. Go eat the type of food you like at another restaurant! Keep up the outstanding work Reuben!!!

The reason for the 1 star: Their food didn't make me sick. Otherwise they'd have received NO stars from me. Other than that, margaritas= watered down, food= mediocre, service= pitiful. GO TO LUCY's. If you have the misfortune of craving mexican food on a Tuesday (when Lucy's is closed), go to Casa de Luna, or make the trip to Luquin's.

A friend recommended Ruben's and i met him for dinner. I will say there is at least a hint of ambience. A rarity on the Hilo side. Chips and salsa was brought to the table. I will say the green salsa was good and spicy. Usually red salsa accompanies chips, but in this case I didn't mind. We then ordered a pitcher of one of the many fruity margarita's on the menu. Tasty but not strong. Now for the food. I usually order a burrito, but tonight I was feeling a bit adventurous and saw a chicken mole special on the board as I walked in. I went for it. My friend ordered the carne asada plate. I know chicken mole, I love chicken mole but when they brought out wasn't chicken mole. I still don't know what recipe they used. Mole is usually thick and brown in color with a hint of chocolate and spice. This was watery and flavorless. The chicken was good but there was no "mole" I was hungry so I ate it. The beans were bland and the rice wasn't the best i've had. I didn't try any of my friends carne asada but I'll tell you, it didn't look that great. Service was friendly and attentive. High Point: Friendly service Low point: What chicken mole Chances I'll be back: I'll give them ONE more try. To be fair.

Tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and ignore the bad reviews. Walked in to see tacky tables and a very odd, not so great smell, but I was craving mexican food so I went for it anyway. Server came right up to us to take our order, so we decided to try one of their famous margaritas. I got my margarita and took a drink to nearly spit it back out. It tasted like the equivalent of vomit and tequila. I thought maybe I got a bad batch of mixer as my boyfriends tasted just fine, so I just asked if I could get another on just on the rocks, still horrible tasting, and not just because of the house tequila. I took a drink, my boyfriend took a drink and I tried it once more. Still nasty. We got our food, mine was picadillo enchiladas, they were edible but extremely salty, I've been all over the west coast for mexican food, this place is by far the worst. You pay for chips and salsa, and their default salsa they bring out is so hot you can't eat it, and we like spicy. They don't give you an option when you buy it for different levels so we assumed medium. When we received our bill we asked politely if they could please remove the margarita since I didn't drink it, but the server said since I took more than a sip that they couldn't. I'm a server myself and I always try to make sure the customers are satisfied. I guess they are used to the constant influx of tourists and feel they don't need to establish customer relations. Also too bad since we live on the island. I've never complained about my food or drink at a restaurant ever before, so yes this place was really really bad.

The service person was so sweet, I'd love to give this a better rating but the food was really mediocre. From what I've read, I should have had a margarita instead of a beer and passed on the tamales - they did have a sign with the "number of margaritas served..."

The chili relleno at Ruben's is phenomenal! I really do love their food, but their service is pretty terrible. You can tell the waiters just don't want to be there. It's rare to see a smile on the faces of any of the employees. Things have definitely gotten better (service wise) since Lucy's opened up. I think they realized that they needed to step up their game... but it's still sub-par. That being said, the food is AWESOME. Lucy's or Reuben's? You can decide for yourself... but I'd pick Lucy's any day.

I see a lot of bad reviews but really??? I've been here several times and do i expect 5 star service? NO!! it's not a four seasons or ritz carlton people... Never once have I had bad service or bad food. Head down to the restaurant any day and see how packed it is. That will tell you how popular they are especially with the local crowd. My personal favorite is the chicken flauta platter. Their margaritas are simple but just what the doctor ordered and large! Food prices are on par with the area and not overly expensive like other reviewers allude to.

We really loved Reuben's. The margaritas are tasty (and not made from a sickly sweet mix) and cheap. The entrees were super tasty. It was a bit heavy on cheese, but that's typical of much of this cuisine. The beans and rice were great that came with the meal.

As a Hilo native, I used to eat at Reubens at least twice a week!! Actually, thanks to the #32 (Crab enchilada and Chile Relleno) plus a few of their Delicious strawberry margaritas, I was able to conceive two children. LOL! All kidding aside, the food is mouthwatering, very filling and as close to authentic Mexican you can get in Hawaii. Of course, their full bar is a great plus! Real crab in their enchiladas, unreal green salsa and no greasy-spoon stuff there!! Every time I get to go back to Hilo, Reubens is on the top of my "Must Do" list!

Where do I begin... What kind of Mexican restaurant charges for chips and salsa?? I'll tell you...the worst kind!! The food was AWFUL!! The steak tasted like cardboard. The salsa...the whole 5 drops they gave us...was decent. The waitress came over once which earned her a whole three dollars for a tip. We had to wait five minutes for a knife to cut up the soggy tortillas that tasted like five day old grease. The waitress was rude as if she owned the island. That's why she works at the WORST Mexican restaurant I have ever been to!!!! Stay away from this place if you know what's good for you!!! I guess I'll have to wait until I get back to California for some decent Mexican food. I wanted to shove the sombrero down her throat!!!

How anyone could bust this place is a mystery to me. I've lived in San Antonio and LA and have had PLENTY of Mexican food. This is BY FAR the best Mexican food, not only on the Big Island, but in HI, hands down! Their salsa is HOT and worth the trip. I hadn't been there for 7+ years and went while visiting and they remembered me. I always feel like family there. The Big Island is a wonder of the world and Reuben's is one of the reasons! Mahalo Reuben's for always making it good!

This place is pretty good given your other choices for a decent priced meal. Their pricing for their menu is a little strange because if you look at it, it's cheaper to buy your meal a-la-cart than buying one of their combo meals. If you buy a combo meal, you're pretty much paying $5 for rice and beans so if you love rice and beans go that route but I didn't so I can't comment on that menu item. I went with their Chicken Enchilada and Chili Rellenos. Their Chili Rellenos is described on their menu as a whole green chili that they stuff with cheese but in reality, it might be a green chili that has been smashed by a steam-roller and then fried. I couldn't tell but it was still relatively tasty. Food overall is a little above average. Their chips are tasty also but they charge $1.50 instead of giving them away for free. We also bought two rounds of margaritas (12) and pushed the margarita counter over 84k thinking we'd get something special but nope...not even a congratulations for our efforts which was kind of a buzz kill. From a marketing/publicity perspective, I'd recommend giving someone a free margarita for every 100th or 1000th margarita purchased. Overall, decent food for a good price and I'd probably go their again if I were in Hilo again.

Don't go. We live in So. Calif. and know Mexican food. Had the hankering and the reviews said this was the best on the Island -- no way. Chips were cold, salsa boring, enchiladas with ranchero sauce barely edible. Don't go. Bartender gave all patrons the stink-eye all evening. Don't go.

Decent drinks if you can get one to your table and that's about it... The food is pretty bad, don't count on water because it may or may not be served regardless if you ask for it or not, and plan on being ignored--waiting for your check for the rest of your day. BEWARE OF THE ROACHES IF YOUR NOT INTO BUGS!!

Disgusting Mexican food. I grew up in California and am used to good Mexican food and this is so gross and so salty! I got the crab salad and it was this salty mayonnaise mess on iceberg lettuce and absolutely no nutritional value to it, which I can handle is it tasted good, but nope, gross! I then tried my husbands enchilladas- salty as heck and I like salt, really like a salt lick salty and funky flavor. The only thing I can imagine with people giving the good reviews is they had their margaritas before food and it made them forget how their food tasted. On the plus side if you like a strong margarita they have them and you don't have to worry about how nasty the food was.

When we first entered the elderly waitress came right up, she didn't speak and i found that to be rude, maybe she only spoke Spanish, not sure, then a young waitress came to our table, she was nice, it was nice the drinks where nice, the food, well let's just say better then taco bell, mexican is Mexican, it was ok.

best mexican in hawaii?! yes super authentic food. its crazy how people have ripped on this place here on yelp when in fact its soo good!my wife and kids travel here yearly and always make the stop. the other reviews of the place are a bit off in my opinion. coming from the so cal area, the food is super flavorful, awesome prices, and great staff. we spoke to the owner to tell her how good the food was and she her husband and son( all seeming very dedicated and authentic ) have been running the place for about 30 years and theyre actually cooking the food,... not some trained high schoolers.) i recommend the chicken chimi, the tamales, the margaritas, and more! keep it up reubens, love it!

The food was great with very generous portions. I agree with the other reviewers that the price for the plates are somewhat high but we had excellent food so no complaints. The salsa here is SUPER hot, so ask for a milder sauce if you can't handle it.

  • Peter K.

We only stopped in for drinks. They have one of the best tequila offerings that I have seen in a small Mexican restaurant (in HI or mainland). The prices for premium tequila was reasonable and comparable to mainland CA prices. The margaritas are big, strong, and so so. We did snack on chips and salsa. Warning: the salsa is hot (spicy) probably the hottest that I have had without ordering the "special salsa".

We had Cinco de Mayo lunch here. Maragarita was good. Very solid fare. I had the steak taco and enchilada combo. I also had a chile relleno. No complaints here. My son had carne asada and the steak taco. My daughter had fajitas. Salsa was flavorful and spicy. All in all a good meal to end a good day!

We met up with a group of friends here for an impromptu gathering one Thursday night. We were a bit skeptical about this place since we had not found any decent mexican food here in Hilo. And coming from southern CA, we are a bit of Mexican food snobs :o) We began with a pitcher of regular and lilikoi margarita. The lilikoi margarita was much tastier than the regular one. It came blended which got a few 'not-sure-about-this look' from a few of us, but it was yummy. I had the tacos plate with carnitas and potatoes and refried beans. All were yummy. My husband had the chili verde plate which was very well cooked and seasoned. The pork just fell apart in the sauce. One of our friends had the chile relleno which was very good as well. Overall, there were no complaints at dinner. I would return again.

I wish I could give no stars.. I went here a while back and it was absolutely HORRIBLE. To start off, the woman serving was very rude, she just looked down her nose at me with a rude look on her face like I was the greatest inconvenience to her asking for a glass of water while waiting for my food. The manager was also very rude to us. Then when the food actually came to the table it was a wreck. My quesadilla was a medium sized tortilla folded in half with some cheese in it, it was MICROWAVED and gross. Seriously? Microwaved? who pays 7-9 dollars for a oily over microwaved quesadilla. I should of gone to freaking taco bell and it would have been ten times better. my friend had gotten a expensive chimichanga and he couldn't even eat it it was so disgusting, the sauce he said tasted bland and like it had been made with ketchup or something. The meat inside was also bad tasting and dry but greasy. This is absolutely the worst Mexican food either of us had ever endured. The cleanliness of the place was also worrisome. There is not one good thing about this place. Please never ever eat there, there are so many better places in Hilo to eat with better pricing and delicious food. Please, don't waste you time or money on this place.

Some Mexican places just sling delicious grub, no-frills, for cheap. This is not one of them. Reuben's is one of those pretentious "sit-down" kinds of Mexican restaurants where everything's overpriced ($12 burritos!!). The food was underwhelming. Both of our plates had obviously sat under a heat lamp for a while - we could tell because the beans and rice were swimming in cheese that had over-melted and separated into oil. The service was okay and the location is nice, right next to the Hilo farmer's market (Weds & Sat). But I can't recommend eating here.

Being from Southern California, I often find it difficult to go for longer than 2 days without eating Mexican food. This can lead to some quasi-disgusting situations (taquitos and beans in Rome, "tortillas" in France come to mind), but when you get desperate, sometimes your mouth turns into a whore and you forget all those times where you promised you would never eat anywhere but Jesus's taco stand #4. Reuben's COULD have been one of those disasters, but probably due to the fact that Reuben is actually Mexican (he has the pictures of him sneaking across the border up on the wall! no joke!), this place is brilliant. The tables are covered in picnic tablecloths, the wall is both falling off and painted with a cheesy mural and every song has the word "corazon" in it. Now for the food/drinks. Basically we came here for the margaritas and WOW oh WOW. yes yes and more yes. The chips and salsa is also amazing. I don't know what it is about his salsa, extra garlic? special hawaiian roasted peppers? who knows, it's delicious. The burritos are o.k., but the sauciness of the waitress will make you wetter than your burrito. That, and the fact that you won't even know where your mouth is after a few of those Cadillac Margaritas, much less care about how good the queso in your burrito is.

Before leaving Hilo to go back to Kona, my family and I decided to stop in for some Mexican food, we were seated no problem and ordered our drinks and food with no problem. The place had a decent crowd and only had one waitress and another older lady working behind the bar, so we understood that we were not going to get fast service and were very patient even though we just wanted to eat real quick before our drive back. While waiting I noticed that the older lady seemed very rude to other customers. My sister in law had ordered a drink which her son had accidentally spilled on her, which wasn't a big deal because it was only water and accidents happen, but what was worse is that they brought her a dirty rag to clean herself off and clean the table and floor with, which they then just decided to leave on the table next to us and needless to say they never offered her to get her another drink. As our food started to come out everything was looking good and even though it wasn't the best Mexican food we had it was eatable, though I wouldn't know because they never decided to bring me out my food that I ordered which was the chicken quesadilla. So I waited for about 10 min as I am watching everyone around me eat their food and just kept thinking that it was going to be out any minute. I was wrong. I then asked the waitress if my food was coming out and she looked at me confused and asked me what I ordered, which I then told her again. At that point I told her that I just wanted it to go and get my check so we could leave. She brought me out my check and added another chicken quesadilla, so I was starting to get frustrated and had to explain to her once again that I never got the food that I had orignally ordered which was the quesadilla. So the I told her to just forget about it an take it off my bill and would just pay what my fiancé ordered. Never once did anyone apologize to me about my food and I am not one to complain but it was starting to get irritating. What was worse is that the older lady behind the bar screwed up on the checks and got everything mixed up and instead of apologizing to us about the service we just had she was getting mad at the waitress and started to say to her that there was only one of her and 2 cooks in the back and who is going to pay for the food that was ordered and NEVER made, never once looking at me to say anything about not getting my food. I am not one to complain on service but this place was awfull and would recommend that people stay away from this place, unless u want to go to a place that has horrible customer service and a old lady that is nothing but rude.

I laugh everytime I walk past Reuben's. I went in there once to order a burrito to go. Their burrito was $15.00!!!! Isn't that absurd?? I really wanted a burrito and reviews have been decent for this place, so I figured I would take the chance and live to tell the following generations about "the $15.00 burrito". I was irritated that they put lettuce in the burrito, no REAL burrito contains lettuce. I asked the waitress to remove the lettuce and asked if they could take the rice that comes on the side, and wrap it inside the burrito. She told me it would cost $2.00. I said, "But they're already wrapping the burrito, and the rice already comes with it.... They would be wrapping the rice together with the rest of the burrito...." She apologized and said it had to be $2.00 extra. I couldn't even believe I said okay to it! As if that wasn't bad enough, I asked for it dry, but with the pico de gallo INSIDE, where it belongs. It was going to come with it anyways, I never asked for anything extra that wasn't already part of the order. She said it would be $1.00 extra. I was racking up a damn near $20.00 burrito. I then asked if she would charge me to not put beans on the side being that it would be less effort for the maker to just not exercise the beans whatsoever into/onto my order. She laughed and apologized, then appeared to be very serious again. I looked at the menu again, then back at her, then back at the menu again... and told her to just forget it. This bitch had the nerve to ask me if I was "sure" that I wanted to cancel the order! I laughed in her face and walked out. Just fyi, I did look at the other stuff on the menu and it wasn't just over-priced burritos.... I felt bad for the old couples vacationing to Hawaii getting royally screwed by Reuben's for so-called "Authentic Mexican Food". They didn't even seem to really be enjoying the food they were eating. I've come to realize that nothing in Hawaii is authentic: Chinese, Mexican, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc. Everything is mixed/Asian food..... Island style. Not that it's not good, but it's not authentic! DON'T GO TO REUBEN'S!!!!! Unless you like it up the butt.

Absolutely disgusting food. I only ate a bit and it still gave me food poisoning. I'll never go back. Stay FAR away!

The food is good, the guacamole better, and the watermelon margarita is to die for! Went to this place shortly after I moved here from Cali, and was looking for some good mexican food. This place isn't like those back home, but it's better than some I've had! Give it a try!

This is one of the worst Mexican restaurants I have ever been to. There is no excuse for the unhygienic, cavernous appearance of this place- especially since the prices are so high and the food so unmemorable. I have been here several times with my friends, who used to drag me there for dinner and margaritas and I never understood why- I mean, there are so many other great restaurants in this area! Just a few blocks away is Island Cantina, which may not serve the most authentic Mexican cuisine, but at least the food tastes good and fresh and looks appetizing. At Reuben's everything looks sloppy and unappealing. The crab enchilada I had was awful. Perhaps there is something on the menu that is good, and if so, please let me know because everything I have ever tried there has been repulsive.

I've eaten at Reuben's a few times before, years ago. The food wasnt that great, so it's never our first choice for mexican food. I'm pregnant, and my fiance and I had just gotten through driving from Kona, and going to our first ultrasound appointment in downtown Hilo. When we were done, we were SO hungry and we really wanted some mexican food. We usually eat at Luquin's in Pahoa, but Reuben's is very close to where my ultrasound appointment was, so I suggested we go there, since my fiance never tried it before, and we were just starving for some enchiladas. We get to Reuben's and it wasnt crowded at all, after we were seated, there were just 5 tables of people, including us. We were seated by a really nice older lady, who spilled water all over our table and almost all over my fiance. We just laughed about it, no harm done, accidents happen. No big deal at all. After she left our waitress came to take our order. She was a short little blonde girl, about my own age of 26 or so. We ordered our usual cheese enchiladas with beans and rice, and a guava juice for me, and a beer for my fiance. So she left to put in our food order. We sat, waiting patiently, as we watched out witress check on everyone else, make sure everything was okay. We watched her go behind the bar to get someone else a beer they had requested after us. then she got a bucket and went behind the bar and fill it with ice, and took it into the kitchen. Then she came back out and checked everyone out again to see that they were okay, excluding us. Then she went behind the bar again and was writing on a piece of paper looking as if she didnt have much of anything to do, all the while, every time she walked near our table, i made eye contact with her to make sure we werent just forgotten. Then, a good 15-20 minutes after we were seated, a lady and girl came into the restraunt. The waitress quickly seated them, took their order, and went behind the bar and made their drinks, and took it to them. My fiancee looked at me in disbeleif and said, "Did you also notice that we are the only two people in here that arent white?" So for the next five minutes, we waited to see if she was going to bring out drinks or not, and discussed what we should do, when we ultimately decided to just get up and leave(we are very polite customers, and have never walked out on a restraunt before), and eat somewhere else. We werent parked too far, so when we left and got into our car and pulled out, the way of traffic forces us to drive past their restraunt. We happened to drive by at the exact moment the pissed off cook comes storming out of the restraunt looking for us,(He could recognize us because he was taking a break on a bench in the restraunt when we were seated and our orders were taken.) and sees me in the passenger seat of our car already driving by, so I just flashed him a nice smile. Needless to say, My fiance and I, nor any of our family, will ever attemt to eat there EVER again, and I suggest the same to everyone else. EVEN when my pregnancy could just kill me of an enchilada craving, I would make the drive to Pahoa, to eat at Luquin's, who's food, and especially service is much better.

When you look at the menu Scotch-taped to the window, item #15 is a squished dead cockroach. We should have taken it as a bad omen and run away in the other direction, but we had all agreed beforehand to meet up and eat here. The space is loud and echoes due to all the hard flat surfaces. Our servers were apathetic and rude. My wife and I are both vegetarians. There were few options available. My wife ordered a bean flauta that arrived with chicken inside. When she pointed out the error, the waitress said, "I don't know why your waiter took that order. Flautas always come with chicken or beef, not just beans. Maybe he thought you said 'beef'?" -- "Uh, no, I said I was a vegetarian, and wanted a bean flauta, and he brought a chicken flauta. Bean and chicken don't sound anything alike." The waitress eventually took it away and replaced it with a disgusting, greasy, dripping with fat, overly-salted cheese quesadilla, with smear of guacamole and a turd of sour cream (yes, it looked like a white turd) on top, and oily beans and bland rice. I had huevos rancheros. The tortillas were burnt, the egg was fried too hard, and the whole mess was overly salty. My sister had a beef burrito that was cold, as if the meat had just been pulled from the refrigerator. They took it away and reheated it, instead of making it fresh. Who knows how long that had been sitting on the counter? My parents ate in embarrassed silence for suggesting this place. The final nail in the coffin was a rude waiter who dropped the check on the table without a single word. No "was everything all right", "would you like dessert?" or "would you like something from the bar?" while we were still working on our main courses! At least we had fun watching the cockroaches climb over the big screen TV. That is, until they climbed down the wall and we had to scoot our chairs to get away from them. For the local who excused this wretched "restaurant" with an apologetic, "This is Hilo," I would not want to associate my hometown with such a disgusting experience.

My friend and I bicycled all morning to Rainbow Falls that took us about an hour and a half to get there. Our 5 minute bike ride back (hitting all green lights and downhill) we found ourselves at Ruben's for lunch. This place seems like a little part of Mexico, and very strange that it's in Hawaii. The decor is all done up Mexico style with green, white and red banners, sombreros, and little triangle flags of all colors all over the place. Of all places, we were carded by the waiter. He honestly thought we looked 17, and I said, "Try like 10 years ago!" We tried the 2 different flavored margaritas - the passion fruit and the guava. Both were awesome! I don't think either of us finished them especially since we ordered so much food. We had the beef nacho, and it was very uniquely prepared. I've never had it that way before and it was pretty good. We also had a steak and pork taco, both very good. We were really too stuffed to eat the crab enchilada and chile rellenos. The rice is also very good and unique in flavor. I wasn't too thrilled about the crab enchilada, but it totally hit the spot!

The food was good considering how really far away Mexico is. The service was also good. The experience wasn't anything to write home about.

The food is an acceptable Mexican menu. The ambiance is totally funky. This is Hilo. The waitstaff keeps this little local eatery lively.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
