We were doing our early Saturday morning Farmers market runs and decided to drop in at Lanky's. The ONLY reason we go there is for the Glazed Fuji Apple Monkey Bread, 5 words, 8 syllables, lol! Being that's their most popular item, it's a good thing we went at that particular time because they only had one left. I was kinda iffy about getting it because it was lop-sided and really didn't appeal to my eyes. But then again I wasn't wearing my prescription glasses, lol! I ended up buying it because it's that damn good. They had other types of monkey bread in the display case like the plain and cinnamon varieties. The one I got is around $12, so worth it! They have donuts and enough pastries to satisfy anyone's sweet cravings. Lanky's Pastries are open from 5 am everyday for your convenience. Make sure to have some "green backs" on hand though they don't accept credit cards. If you're ever in the area and happen to end up at Hilo Shopping Center, drop by Lanky's and get their Fuji Apple Monkey Bread!

Two words: Monkey Bread If you're ever in Hilo, you need to make a stop at Lanky's! The monkey bread is so addicting! It probably has boatloads of butter and sugar, but who cares!! Once you start eating, you'll find that it's hard to stop! This family owned bakery has other delightful desserts such as long johns and cream snails, all of which are delicious, but my heart belongs to the monkey bread.

This little dive bakery gets the full stars from me. CASH ONLY be prepared the last thing you want is to have to limit your purchase. Like everyone else has indicated that Monkey Bread is awesome. I chose the glazed, extra butter, extra cinnamon ....think of the sound Homer Simpson makes eating a donut ..... I arrived too late this morning for a bacon donut, but so far everything I've sampled has been wonderful.

Holy crow, their pastries are the BIDNESS!! Shear magic. That cinnamon fritter took my breath away. Ain't had one like it since I left Georgia. Go here now!

I Yelp'd a place for donuts and found this great place. The donuts and monkey bread were really fresh. I was also surprised to see them sell day old stuff at a discount just like the bakery from when I a small.

In our search for great Hawaiian food in basic strip malls, we found Lanky's. Delicious Hawaiian pastries. We loved the baby monkey bread in particular, but the malasada and coconut cream buns were also delicious. The maple bacon donut is a must if you like that sort of thing. The prices were reasonable. Coffee is weak, though.

Monkey bread is one of the tastiest treats you'll ever get! No matter if you get the plain one or the iced cinnamon apple one, theyre all amazing. Especially if you get them first thing in the morning when they are still warm from the oven! They also dont put an unnecessary amount of icing on top; just a small drizzle. Its perfect. Classic Hilo grinds.

Lanky's has the best donuts! No one can match them. Even at 6 pm they have fresh trays out. When they were closed, I kept coming back hoping they would be open again. It took some time, but they did it and they're just as good as ever. Thanks for coming back Lanky's. I hope you never close again.

Guys, if you're ever in Hilo, and you have a craving for some pastries treats.........you gotta check out Lanky's at the Hilo Shopping Center. This place has been around for sometime now, and I must say it is a hidden GEM of a store! When I use to do work at the First Hawaiian Bank (Hilo Branch), I somehow just happen to stumble into this place as it is in the same shopping mall. When I bought some of their pastry treats from this place, I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious they were, and became an instant fan! Today, I was working on the Big Island again - (Pahoa Side), and after I was done, I made my way back into Hilo town, just to stop by at Lanky's Pastries. I was actually jonesing for a custard danish today, as I am a total custard fiend! When I got to the bakery, I did not see any custard danishes, so I went with "Plan B", and got a Custard Chocolate Drizzle Donut, and a Glazed Donut. I'm a guy who likes sweets, and sometimes my eyes are bigger than my stomach! I ended up only eating just a half portion of both donuts, then dumping the rest, as the pastry portions were just so HUGE and GENEROUS!!! I could have used a donut eating partner today! Lol! Let me tell you about the items I bought today....................The Glazed Donut was the size of a standard size Styrofoam plate lunch container. All of this for just $0.99 cents! Can you believe that???? The Glazed Donut tasted light & very fresh! The donut was glazed just puuuuurfectly! Not too sweet! I tell you...........I'd rather eat a Glaze Donut from Lanky's, than eat a Krispy Creme glaze donut! As for the Custard Chocolate Drizzle Donut - $1.49 was also very HUGE! The custard on the donut took care of my custard craving today, but I must say, this donut was very sweet.........but of course if you looked at the photo of this donut, you would understand.......... Lots of parking in the private parking lot of the Hilo Shopping Center. This place only takes hard cold CASH! So please have your "Kala" ready! If this bakery was on Oahu, I'll tell you, it would give a lot of the other bakeries on Oahu a hard rub! Check 'em out! No can go wrong!

Lanky's bacon covered glazed donut is the bomb!!!! absolutely delicious and generous on the bacon. Nice size donut, soft and fresh, and the bacon is so crispy and yummy when it's hot/warm. Love it..........for all you bacon lovers out there, you need to stop by and get some...........broke the mouth good!!! This is a must while in Hilo on the Big Island...........another slice of goodness!

Do I really need to fly to the big island to get this monkey bread?! someone give me the recipe, I don't care about my body and health, give me monkey bread and you can have anything you want.

They have three types of chocolate cakes. Go with the Chocolate Dream because it's considered the "healthiest." Duh, chocolate cake is not healthy for you regardless. For the smallest round cake they have, it's priced at $17. But it's soooo worth it! OH EM GEE, don't forget the longjohn too! It's like a elongated malasada. This place usually has one worker working and takes cash only. But other than that, this childhood place never gets old!

Shortly after eating loco moco at Cafe 100, I decided I needed to try a bacon maple donut (a la Voodoo in Portland). Lankys isn't far away (nothing is in Hilo), so we drive over to check it out. It is located in a strip mall, so it is fun to walk from end to end and just check out all the shops. There is a very nice Natural Foods store here. Lankys is an old school bakery that has been around for a long time. They are known for their monkey bread, which I did not try this time. I was on a mission to eat the bacon maple, which I have seen numerous times on TV at Voodoo. I figured I would give this one a shot. My wife opted for the cococnut glazed donut. First thought was both donuts are pretty big. I ripped mine in half to get a better hold of it and to make it easier to eat (like a bagel). First impression (other than MMM...BACON) was how soft the actual donut was. It was nothing like store bought donuts that are all hard and chalk-like. This was very soft and chewy like a french donut. I thought "damn this is delightful" while I was hit was the super sweet sugary maple glaze. This is the same maple as all other maple- you either love it or loathe it. It's so sweet that I only need one donut and I'm good for a few months. I can only eat about 3-4 maples a year. So to top it all off was the bacon. Oh yes the mighty, greasy, bountiful bacon. These are not bacon bits, but actual slices of bacon chopped up into little bacon dopeness that just blankets the entire top of the donut. Taking a bite of the donut fills your mouth full of happiness and your lap with bacon pieces that have flown off the sides. You will need a napkin or two as bacon can't become that wonderful without a little grease.

Lanky's is a nondescript bakery in a strip mall next to my favorite natural food store. I wandered in there looking for breakfast one day and saw the beautiful tray of maple bacon doughnuts that just came out. I have since been there 3 times and have always been pleased with my purchases. I got the maple bacon doughnut for my boyfriend's mom and she repeatedly exclaimed that it was the best idea for a doughnut. My boyfriend and I have also shared several of their custard buns in both plain and coconut, and we are constantly amazed by their generous offerings of custard. It's not the healthiest, but that's not really what one looks for in a bakery.

Great donuts in Hilo! Try the maple bacon donut -- a full side of bacon fits onto a delicious fresh pastry. Great!

The place is small and they have really little selection but I have tho day that the pastries I did choose was good. They are known for their monkey bread and if you don't want the entire cake you can get baby monkey bread which are donut size. So soft and chewy. When I ordered the baby monkey bread I noticed on the counter some giant glazed donuts with bacon on top. Asked my husband if he wanted to try and he was up for anything. Always saw bacon desserts on tv but never here on the Big Island...found it at Lanky's. Breakfast! It was good, but the monkey bread is still fave.

BACON LOVERS REJOICE! PALEOS, plan your cheat day! Loved the maple bacon donut since it came out & did the comparison with Hilo Bake Company's version. Lanky's: Awesome if you're 'ono for real bacon chunks but also crave a glazed donut. Hilo Bake's: Hits the spot if you have a sweet tooth and wouldn't mind some bits of bacon. Lanky's donuts are Kam Bakery Kalihi-size (for those from O'ahu that want a size comparison). Hilo Bake's are much smaller - which is probably "healthier" due to the large dose of sugar. Lanky's buttermilk crueller is also 'ono to da max if you have a major sweet tooth AND love fried food! Fried donut + hard glazed sugar shell = bliss. But if you're looking for something lighter with fruit, the Fuji apple monkey bread is great. Soft and not too sweet. If they took credit cards & cleaned up the place I'd give them 5 stars.

Nice to see a historic Hilo business coming back! Same location in the Hilo Shopping Center. Just re-opened about a week ago and it's the same owners as when they closed- so that's nice to know. The "monkey bread" is excellent and nice and soft. A few days later, I purchased a few pastries for my co-workers and all seemed to be nice and fresh. Someone told me that they tried the "pig-in-the-blanket" and it's not so good- "cold and not as tasty as before". Idk, because I didn't try it. The pastries seemed like your typical pastry shop types. Nothing fancy, but definitely better than those already in plastic bags. They sell cakes, and your other pastry shop items goodies! Give Lanky's a try. It's prob closer to a 3-star bakery, but I bump Lanky's to 4-stars mainly because of the "monkey bread", the limited choices in Hilo, and it's your standard "old school" bakery. Tip: If you want to play it safe... go with the long johns and monkey bread.

Lanky's is a dive bakery. If that even makes sense. Little bakery that's older, a little on the dingy side, but like most dive places, homemade tasting GOODNESS. As others have mentioned, the Bacon Maple Donut is a must. It's huge, DOUSED in bacon, and only $1.85. UNDER $2?! Its such a deal it makes me cry. You can't even get a side order of bacon for $2 at some places, and this comes with a side order on top of a yummy glazed donut. Wut? Yes, that's right, you need to have one right now. Or, should a bacon donut as big as your face (I'm really not exaggerating here) seems overbearing, they also have a bacon dinner roll - which I didn't get to try as I went overzealous mode and went straight for the mondo donut, but I'm sure it's just as yum. I've seen many-a bacon donut, but the amount that they've managed to fit on top of theirs is just applause-worthy. While you're there the monkey bread was also scrumptious. They also have day-old bread sales as well for those who don't it being slightly less than fresh and wanted a discount. Cash only, plenty of parking in the little "strip mall" its located in. Long story short, even if you only mildly love bacon, as long as you're in the area, you MUST come here. Or even if you're not, make the trip, you deserve it.

Monkeybread!!! With apples + glaze! Super yummy with coffee for breakfast or as a small snack. They also sell a nice array of doughnuts and other pastries. But you can't go wrong with the monkeybread...buy one and share with others, they'll be your new best friend :)

Lanky's was started when I was in high school by "Lanky" Kusano and situated in the Hilo Shopping Center. The other bakeries in Hilo at that time were Robert's Bakery and Hilo Pastry Shop. Robert's was started by Bob Taira, who founded King's Bakery in Honolulu, and later established the manufacturing plant in Torrance, CA for King's Hawaiian Sweet Bread. Hatada Bakery, which had a small retail counter, was primarily an institutional business, wholesaling bread, rolls, and other baked goods to retail stores. You had to go to the rural Big Island areas to find other bakeries, such as Toma Bakery (Pahoa), Mt. View Bakery (home of the "stone" cookies), and Ishigo Bakery (Honomu), the ones closest to Hilo. There was also a bakery in Olaa (now called Keaau), which was located next to the Olaa Theatre. Today, Robert's and Hilo Pastry have fallen by the wayside, with Lanky's the survivor competing against the supermarket bakeries operated by KTA, Safeway, and Foodland. Lanky's is now owned by Tony Nakagawa, a young Hilo businessman who is the son of one of my classmates. It is just for this connection that I will go there next month on my five-day visit to Hilo to sample the current line-up of pastries and other goodies. It's been 46 years since Lanky's came on the scene, offering a "killer" strawberry shortcake back then, as I remember it. I also believe that other than First Hawaiian Bank, Lanky's is the sole business from the '60s still operating in the Hilo Shopping Center. Gone are Benson-Smith Rexall Drugs, Robin's, Honsport, Dick's Coffee House, Ben Franklin Crafts, MJS Music, Moses Company, Kurohara's, Pick-n-Pay, Sears Catalog, and Planter's Bar. UPDATE: Lanky's is now CLOSED! Unfortunately, they have fallen victim to the economic hard times after 46 years, I had no time to say "farewell."

OMG, the monkey bread! Try the extra cinnamon & butter one. It did not last in our house more than a day! I am sure there are other great items, we keep meaning to try the long johns, but we always end up with the monkey bread.

This is a bakery in the Hilo Shopping Center. Fresh breads. Their speciality is "monkey bread", which is worth trying. We bought a cinnamon moneky bread and we liked it. Otherwise, the pastries are donuts and a few sheet cakes. Not too many things that are individual serving. I'd go there again for the monkey bread.
