I love their garlic shrimp. Mainly because it's in a large portion. The food could be a little better, but honestly I'm always very excited to eat their garlic shrimp. :)

I gave Kow's a two-star rating because meh..I've experienced better. I don't hate the food at Kow's, but if I were given a choice as to which Chinese restaurant I'd want to eat at in Hilo, Kow's would not be my first choice. Their cake noodles are so-so. The flavor is there but the cake noodles were soggy and a bit hard. Nothing special about their fried rice. Or the Mongolian chicken (we were told it was a little spicy but came with no spice and not a lot of chicken on the plate). The restaurant is spacious and can hold a lot of people, but it's never busy so you don't have to worry about not finding a table. Also, the parking lot can hold less than the restaurant can. If it were ever packed (or if there was a party there), people would have to park at the gas station or across the street at another business and walk over. Overall, Kow's is mediocre in my book. They're not junk, but they're also not the best.

Ok, you know when a Soup is that good, that it actually motivates you to write a review. I usually come here for the shrimp egg fu yung with oyster sauce gravy (which you have to request) otherwise you'll get dry eggs, (unless you like your eggs dry, lol!) I know I don't! ha ha! I always upgrade to fried rice served with a side of all Steam pork (a request also) if not it also comes with sweet sour spare ribs, that I'm not a fan of (too sweet). Well, any way this would be my norm. It's been rainy and cold the past few days and I needed something hot to hit that cold spot. This is my go to place for some hot & tasty soup. I love their Abalone & Vegetable Soup which is the Bomb! So full of yummy goodness, see my pic's and your mouth will water! I also love their Chicken & Vegetable Soup too, especially when I'm under the weather. So try it and trust me, you'll be back for more!

I enjoyed it! I'd go again. Just rated 3 stars for now because I'd like to try it again to really rate it higher if it's deserved ;-)

this was kind of an odd experience. 2.5 stars. the decor is "old banquet hall." the food we ordered was just OK.... it's a huge menu. I had a lo mein dish from the "specials" list which was inexpensive but not very flavorful and kind of oily, and gave me a lot of gas and indigestion after (sorry!). I felt like one of those old pepto bismol commercials! The highlight of the meal was the waitress, who was funny and friendly. I guess this is one of those local institutions where you have to know what to order. their history sounds interesting from reading the other reviews. I might give them another try.

5/31/08: Our taste for chinese food brought us here. My wife grew up eating many items here, including the beef broccoli cake noodle. She tells me that the place hasn't changed since childhood and one had two locations. Having driven past numerous times, I've seen the place full for banquets and also quite sparse on other weekend nights. The restaurant is nicely decorated, but quite tired. We arrived on a night when the flying termites were out. While most were buzzing around outside, a few did make it inside to bug anyone there for dinner (including us). It peeved me that the owner (who never left his chair next to the register) didn't come around to either greet us on arrival or try to do something about the termites.

What!? No reviews for my favorite Chinese restaurant in Hilo!? Have been going to Kow's for years now. Back in the day, my grandma used to bring her metal pail for take home won ton min. Or we'd get some fresh char siu to bring to relatives in Kona. You can bring in your own caught fish, and have them prepare it! They also have fresh mullet, akukle, and ono. No need to order family style if that's not what you want. Kow's also features plate combos that feature their best dishes. I hate how most Chinese restaurants only offer combo plates for lunch.

I used to live across the street from this place and would go there in a pinch. The crab spring rolls are... gross. They'll special make vegetarian dishes (although it confuses the hell out of them -- tofu without pork? Crazy mainlanders), which is nice, although they don't actually taste that great. They do have karaoke there fairly regularly, which is definitely a locals-only affair... but you can always move across the street and enjoy the soft-rock crooning from the privacy of your home!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
