Uncle Rudy is fantastic! Him and his wife were friendly and I saw them greeting everyone when they came in and when they left. I got a teri beef sandwich and fries as I needed to stop quick to grab something to eat and keep driving. Was 'ono! I'll be back when I'm in Hilo town again :)

Ate at this establishment before it changed owners. Back then I usually ordered the Korean Combo, and almost couldn't finish the entire meal. But now, after it came under new ownership, I ordered the same dish, but it wasn't quite the same. For one, I finished the entire meal with no problem, aside from still feeling hungry somewhat. And two... the side dishes of pickles has changed, in quantity and taste. It's not the same when the previous owners operated the restaurant. I've thought about going back and trying my luck again, but so far, have not done so. Maybe soon...

Good old-fashioned style local and Japanese foods. Nothing fancy and booths are pretty wide. But this is the place you come to for old style comfort foods.

Visiting the Big Island... Speechless and for the wrong reasons. I get the laid back lifestyle, the lush flora and fauna, the deep roots of Hawaiian history and aloha that still manifests itself within the locals today. What I don't get- the lack of good food joints?! Where are they!? Disappointing service through and through. Long story short- 1. Drinks take longer than the food. 2. Never asked how our food was, if everything was ok until after the meal. 3. One server taking care of 2 tables! 2! And still never got our drinks refilled until we asked after watching the server walk by several times w/out acknowledging the status of our table. Told the new lady who entered the floor with a displeased face that our drinks needed refilling and that we wanted our food to go, came back with a sad piece of foil and flimsy cheap plastic plate for us to pack ourselves- not a big deal, most places you pack your own doggie bags. The only redemption for this sad experience was that the food itself was pretty good. Portion wise, I had half my food leftover, so stingy is voided from the adjective drop box of this particular review. Kalua pig is good, salty, but not overpowering, and not fatty. Mochiko chicken, different from what most of us are used to- for one it's super flat, with a light, crisp, coating- which, surprisingly, is a nice rendition of the original. Big Island is suppose to be laid back, that's one of the incentives as a get away, but if you really want to lay back and let time consume you, go to Jimmy's Drive Inn, and enjoy what used to be before the hustle and bustle of customer service.

I'm in Hilo, Hawai'i biatches!!! Suck it!! Now that that's outta the way, I'd like to compose a short review of Jimmy's Drive Inn. Jimmy's was my first meal of this trip to da Big Island. Wanting some local grindz, I chose to go with the kalua pork and lau lau plate (complete with rice or poi, pipikaula, and lomi lomi salmon. Here's da breakdown: -Kalua pork: tender, juicy, smoky, and not too salty; went well with my poi (that's right, I'm keepin' it Island Style, yo!). -Lau lau: a bit heavy on the butterfish, but pretty tasty; I'd order it again. -Lomi lomi salmon: really more like salmon-flavored tomatoes and onions; I think I found one piece of salmon in my small bowl. -Pipikaula: smoky, salty, and delish; wanted more than the two bites I got. -Poi: good, but served cold (I prefer my poi closer to room temp). Service was good and our food came out relatively quick for our large group of about sixteen people. This place seem to be a local favorite and I can see why. The dining area is fairly large and the staff is pretty nice. I'd definitely eat here again. One tip though: the fruit punch is served strong (it tasted like shave ice syrup). Mahalo, mainlanderz!

To much salt. Had pork cutlets with gravy and corn. The pork was really good just could have skipped the gravy. It gave it way to salty of a flavor. The girlfriends kalua pork was really good though.

Ahhhhh, good ol' Jimmy's! It's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good there. Oh my God! I would give them five stars. BUT the service can be really, super slow. Granted there is only one server (the same server for my entire life), in all the times I've been in there lately, it hasn't been packed or anything - and the service was still slow. But the food is supah good grinds! I love getting my meals ozen style! And they give me miso and a whole bunch of other good stuff. Seriously? Their portions are big enough for TWO! Well . . . Maybe that's just what I think 'cause I'm small. Haha. But anyway, still . . . Really good. :) For as LONG as I can remember, I've ALWAYS loved Jimmy's. Aside from the slow service - absolutely no complaints. Everyone else that I know pretty much loves Jimmy's too and will probably be DEVASTATED if it EVER closes down. :(

One of my favorite restaurants. Granted, the dining area isnt fancy nor are the employees however you go to a restaurant for the food, nothing else. Try the Ozen special, its a pleaser!

Almost every time we go to Hilo, the fiancee's gpa takes us to Jimmy's for lunch. Ambiance is def. lacking (old school and slightly dirty), but the food makes up for it. Usually go with #15 - kalbi, bbq chicken, 2 mandoo, rice, miso soup, vegetables (kim chee, cabbage, mac salad, daikon, chapche) and tea. This past time I tried the mochiko chicken (came w/rice, soup, veggies, tea) - sooo good! Not deep fried, super tasty, one of the most ono mochiko chicken I've ever eaten! Of course, we will be back!

Jimmy's is a local favorite, and it was one of my fave places to eat in Hilo... but I ordered the Fisherman's platter this time around and was a little disappointed with all just 2 pieces each: oyster tempura (lil overdone and chewy), fish stick (tasted like the kind you can get at the frozen food aisle, was mushy in the middle), scallop (over fried, machine processed parts/kinds of may or may not be scallops), miso soup, rice, daikon... came w/ kimchee, but I'm a kimchee snob, sorry - my mother-in-law is kimchee mama... she's taught me the art of making kimchee and there was no art/flavor in their's... Everyone else ordered OZEN bentos... good steak, sashimi was fresh, katsu chicken was ok 15.95 for the Ozen Bento. Jimmy's has a lunch center feel to it... same old skool booths, little on the dingy side... Service was good, staff was super friendly.

I usually love coming to Jimmy. Been coming here for years, but I havent been here ever since they had new owners.. which was probably awhile back. They had one server so it took a good 15 mins to receive our food. I ordered the korean chicken.. Very disappointed! !! It didnt look nor taste like korean chicken AT ALL! It was super oily covered in some sort of sauce. The chicken was super dry.. I had to keep spitting it out.. hard to swallow.. I ended up not even eatting my dish. My boyfriend ordered the mochiko chicken which was pretty decent. The sides were pretty good besides the kim chee which was overly salty.

My wife said, "I don't know why everyone on the island isn't in here. This is great!" The specialties are Japanese, Hawaiian (laulau and kalua pig), and Korean. We had Korean BBQ chicken, kalbi and pot stickers. Really tasty, and served with kimchi, pickled vegetables, miso soup, rice and (as a nod to traditional plate lunch) a mini-scoop of mac salad. Prices are very reasonable. Service is very pleasant. The decor is practically non-existent, but the place is very clean.

I happen to love Jimmys!! I've been coming here since I was little and have always gotten the chicken katsu/meat jun combo. From the outside you wouldn't think too much of this place, but it definitely is a hidden gem for amazing prices. It's starting to get a little more run down since I came here, but regardless I would recommend this place and always make a stop here before going back home. A whole meal (that will leave you full) will set you back around $12, but so worth it! I can never finish my whole entree. Come here for good, local Japanese food!

With the help of new owners this place has really changed in a good way! I enjoyed chicken katsu, hamburger steak, and meat jun. The service was pretty quick with little to no delays. Price wise its budget friendly and there is a variety to choose from. My most favored thing about Jimmys is that the food is not oily!

We like coming here for lunch or dinner. Simple good, old style food that we grew up with for special occasions. I think the seats are still the same from 20+ years ago! Gail ordered the combo and I got the oyako donburi. Awesome.

The food is great. Jimmy's is definitely one of my favorite restaurants. But the service... every time we go there, they always forget one of our drinks. This last time we went, they not only forgot my wife's coffee, but they brought out Sprite for my daughter instead of Fruit Punch. Our waitress said they were out of Fruit Punch, which is fine, but she did not ask what we would like instead. It would have saved her the trouble of taking back the Sprite, because my daughter doesn't drink soda. Still, if you are patient with the service, the overall quality of the visit still brings us back. I'd recommend Jimmy's to anyone.

Ordered cheese burger deluxe and Kalua pig plate-ozen style. I was a bit disappointed that the laullau didn't have butterfish - had to change my selection :( to the Kalua pig. I'm beginning to wonder if anyone makes it with butterfish any more. Flavor : cheese burger patty has a very good taste - can tell it's home made. Kalua pig plate - pork has a nice flavor not too salty, lomi salmon was as expected, poi was fresh, white miso soup-nice and pickled condiments were very tasty and complimented the plate well. Seating area - standard booth seating and clean. Service: fast and friendly ! True aloha spirit !

A first look at Jimmy's Drive Inn and nobody would think this place serves good food. The parking lot only holds about 5 cars and the interior looks like it hasn't been updated since the 1970s. However, their food is actually pretty good! The ozen (combination) plates are priced at $12 and it comes with two choices, miso soup, rice, and side Japanese veggies (like daikon or ginger). The meat jun is flavorful and chicken katsu is crispy and juicy. A lot of food for a cheap price - what more could you want?! If you can ignore the old-fashioned decor, you will definitely enjoy the food here!

I give it 1 star above average because of the selection. The food is pretty good. 5 kinda tight parking stalls right in front. Street parking as usual in Hilo. Ambiance is relevant.. old school. Hawaiian Plate Combo (Ozen) had fantastic Kalua Pig (like the other reviewer said, not too salty), very moist if not too moist.. had a puddle of water underneath (it was wrapped in foil for a little while). Still, really good. The laulau wasn't bad.. nothing special. I had the poi (3 finger) instead of rice. Again, nothing special but glad to find a place that offers it. Take-out didn't come with much veggies but they were pretty good. Mac salad was bland. Miso was good. Pipikaula was crossed out in thick black marker :( Chicken Katsu was a nice change; breading was light and not greasy. Hamburger steak was pretty amazing.. tasted fresh (not a compact disc) and the gravy was good, not too light and not too heavy. Overall I'd totally go again. Next time, dine-in. They have maybe 15 booths..?

Substandard meals. Had the sirloin steak. Was so ultra thin...portions skimpy...and overpriced for its offerings. Would never go back

In its day, Jimmy's was awesome. It's now not nearly as busy as it used to be, but I still enjoy the food. My favorites are the chicken katsu and the combination plate of BBQ chicken, kalbi, and mandoo. Ozen style adds miso soup, potato salad, koko, and some noodles, but does not include a drink as with a regular order. That always bummed me out.
