The taste is good, the portioning is good, and the service is friendly. A bit more expensive, but it's a local restaurant, not corporate run, so they do the best they can. I'd recommend the garlic eggplant, but I've always been a fan of stir-fry eggplant.

For a while I've been craving Chinese food, so glad I came here. Food: We ended up getting Egg fu young, lemon chicken, shrimp canton and fried rice, (family style). It was the BOMB! I loved it and I would definitely come back, the lemon sauce was perfect for the crispy chicken, the shrimp canton was puffy and moist the sauce just adds so much flavor of deliciousness. Service: Food came out super fast! I'd say less the 10 min and it was out! The chef was on point! The waitress was busy at first but none the less awesome and asked if we needed anything else. Overall well deserved 5 stars

Cheng's...the home of THE best Oyster Chicken. People on the Big Island more so those in Hilo, know exactly where to get that crispy edible gold from! Usually during lunch is when we try to hit the spot, especially if we're in the mood for some oyster chicken. When my family joins us, we do ala carte and we order at least 4-5 dishes. If it's just us two, we either get from the hot line or the menu. We get the Full order of Oyster Chicken with Fried rice. The ala carte dishes we get are: 1. Crispy Chicken with Oyster Sauce & Lemon sauce on side. 2. Dai Chop Wui w/ Cake Noodles 3. Crispy Roast Pork 4. Egg Fu Young 5. Shrimp w/ Vegetables All that plus steamed rice. The food comes out really fast and piping hot. To sum everything up, 5 stars for the food and service!

Swang by here yesterday and my whole experience was rather... meh. We went in 'ohana style and I chose the $4.75 crispy gau gee (10) and cake noodles (12). My family opted for a pork dish, as well as canton shrimp and orange chicken. The pictures really make the dishes seem better than they actually were. The orange chicken had too much breading, the cake noodles were soggy, and the pork dish was drowing in sauce even though it shouldn't have. The taste was okay. My main problem was the gau gee. First off it was folded in little triangles and not the normal rectange style. Secondly, there was hardly any meat in it, literally only a micro-sized bite. The restaurant just seemed so dirty. One of the workers was peeling ginger in this big box right in the middle of the restaurant during dinner rush. The glass to showcase the hot food needed a serious spray-down. I'd much rather go to Happy Valley, or even Panda's.

Drop by this place during lunch time. I ordered one choice lunch plate at price $7.50. The owner only gave a very small scoop of veggie to go with a large amount of rice. I always have one choice lunch plate including Panda Express, the amount this place gave is ridiculous small, really cannot be considered a meal. I ended up to add one more choice to get by this lunch, and costs almost $10. The food is tasteless, I really regret I should just stick to Panda Express, at least I know what quality I can expect. Overall, highly not recommend this place.

You're absolutely right, Danielle. I, too, have been overcharged the last two times I went here. The first time I thought it was just a mere oversight, but the next time I had take-out and when I added it up, it was over priced. Bad deals. Check your receipts people. As for the food, it's ok. I liked them better when they were in the old Kaiko'o mall. For some reason it doesn't taste the same as I remember. Yeah, I have to agree that Panda's noodles are better.

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. The owner is beyond rude. Stood at the counter waiting to pay for five minutes with the owner standing right there at the register and instead of helping me, she finished up what she was doing. Another time I asked if there was eggplant and her response was, "Do you see it", in a really rude tone.

I'm a regular customer & love their food! No complaints until now! After reading couple reviews of the owner overcharging, I would always calculate my order there because I always order the same thing but my total would always be different. Couple times I did correct her on the total & she would apologize & give back the difference. You would think that she caught on that I know what she doing, right? Well, I went there earlier tonite with my phone already calculating & she told me my total with 45 cents more! So again, I confronted her how she got that total. AGAIN, she recalculates & gives me the right total. Yes, it's only 45 cents, but how many customers she has overcharged? It does add up. So if you do go there, make sure you're not being overcharged! I also noticed she never gives a receipt. Makes you wonder why, huh?

Worst service EVER!! never going back there again! Me and my family (9 of us) went to dine in. After we ordered our food they brought our hot mustard and it was SPOILED. So the waitress took it back to the owner and we heard the owner in a sassy way say "y what they said" so my mom went to go talk to her. She brings out the batch from the icebox and gave us new hot mustard. Then she uncaps the the squeeze bottle that has the spoiled hot mustard inside and dumps the good batch in with the spoiled batch. Then our food starts coming out and they got some of our orders wrong and we find a wire brush in our fried rice, again my mom took the plate to show the lady. She makes another comment "oh you so lucky you should go to Vegas." After we finished eating we went up to go pay. We noticed that some things she over charged us! So we went through the entire bill and lookes at the prices, she was throwing on extra charges to our sodas, sides and our plates (half our bill had extra charges on it) WE ARE NEVER GOING BACK!! if I could give negative stars I would!!!

Went by the previous reviews and I'm here to tell you. Don't listen to them. Here's the bottom line. If you have been to the mainland and visited the smallest hole in the wall Chinese place and loved it. This is NOT like that. Yes good size restaraunt, but horrible food. Then when we complained about it. Just got a "oh sorry". If you've never had Chinese food. Then yes you may like it. This was absolutely the worst Chinese I've ever tasted. I thought the prior reviews saying "best in hilo" would at least be adequate. But this was far from it. I'm sad to say. Panda Express is 10 times better than this place.

  • Tiffany P.

Oyster chicken was GREAT, until I finished my plate and found a dead German roach swimming in the oyster sauce at the bottom of the plate. Went back and got a refund. Lady wasn't even sorry she just said ok and gave my money back.

I WILL NEVER COME BACK!!! I was so excited about the place. Until I met the owner. A very loud, fresh off the boat and obnoxious chinese woman.. I still can hear her shrieks in my head screaming "1 item!!!!??, 1 item??!!!!" What really disgusted me was a mound of raw pork filling for spring rolls, just sitting out in the open at room temperture with flies around. I warned the hawaiian waitress (who was very nice) about the possible dangers. She said her boss knows about it and she couldnt do anything. Even with that gross scene, I tried their chopseuy- sad to say it was very bland- nothing really to write home about. Save your money and get a bento at a gas station!

When they were in Kaiko'o Mall I would eat here AT LEAST once a week. Now that they're open again, I MUST have the oyster chicken fried rice plate EVERY TIME I come back home to visit ^_^ I have tried to recreate it, because no one here on Oahu does it the same way, but I am no where near getting the chicken cooked the same, and my sauce is not the same taste at all! LOL Absolutely LOVE this place and I hope they will never shut down.

Didn't even know this place existed until I drove by it last week. Glad I stopped today. Big restaurant, but was empty. Probably because they are usually closed on Tuesdays, but because tomorrow is Christmas day, they opened today. Had the chow fun with roast pork and black bean chicken. The chow fun was delicious, and roast pork awesome. The chicken was slightly salty for my taste, but all in all, a good meal. Restaurant is clean and staff friendly. Dine in portions are huge, and although they were supposed to be closed, there was a lot of in and out traffic, so I guess they must be good. Next visit, I gotta try the noodles with oyster chicken. I'm a fan!

One of our favorite "on-the-go" eateries. It may not be gourmet cuisine, by for the price, the quality is pretty darn good. Personally, their recipes tend towards the saltier side for my palate, but overall, the tastes are spot on. Our favorite is the crispy chicken, with any of the sauces - I enjoy both the lemon and oyster sauce. I think there's one more, but can't remember what it is. Service is very friendly and helpful an the restaurant is very clean. Will eat here again for sure!

My wife and I really enjoy Cheng's Chop Suey House. We always order fresh from the menu and "sit-down" for our meals. They always give you more food and it taste fresh compared with steam table items. It's reasonably priced and very good Chinese food overall. The interior is very clean too!

Oyster chicken extra green onions all day. I honestly don't know how the other food tastes, because that's all I've ever eaten at Cheng's, even back when they were located in the Kaiko'o mall. Nah, I've had some other stuff too...like their cake noodle, which I also love. Big portions and super fast service, so can't complain. This location is new and its pretty clean, unlike Ling's across town. One reviewer said that her go to place for Chinese food is Panda Express....uhhhhh, whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? To each their own, but sorry, I'll take the home cooked food over a fast food Chinese chain restaurant and their mystery meat, any day of the week. Oyster chicken!

What is just as important as the food you eat...The customer service. At Cheng Chop Suey you will receive the best customer service! Cheng is the only worker there most of the time, but she does it all. Taking your order, making the plate, and accepting the payment. She is very courteous and is always smiling. Yes the food is served from a steam table, but it's good. She has: Crispy chicken with lemon, oyster or sweet sour sauce, pork and peas, chicken or pork adobo, pinacbet, veggie dishes, lumpia, etc. Each plate comes with a choice of white rice, fried rice or noodles. You can even do half rice and noodles. It is a small place with just a couple of tables to eat in, but most people take out. The price ranges from about $6 for one choice to about $8 for two to three choices. Cheng's is located on Lanikaula St. right now, but will soon be moving to Hualalai St. right below K's Drive Inn in a couple of months.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
