Probably one of the best places for happy hour on the north shore! Cheap prices ($3 beers), large HH plates ($6 chicken wings - 6 big ones!) and all around unassuming, casual and fun vibe. We sat at one of the tables on the patio and was fun to watch people driving and walking by.

It was packed on Sunday morning as football games were abundant. The Mac nut French toast was nothing special like some reviewers have said but the Mai tai and Bloody Mary were delicious! Would go back for drinks but probably not to eat

Fish Tacos-5 star, service -5 star, Bloody Marys- 5 stars + a super nova. We will be back.

We went here after a lovely afternoon at the beach and could not have been more pleased with our experience. The service was amazing! Our sever was extremely friendly and gave great drink and food suggestions. The nachos were out of this world and the Teri burger was delicious!. If we did not have prior plans, we would have stayed longer for happy hour. I look forward to our next visit to Hanalei - we will be coming back here for sure!

Used to love this place , but will not be coming back as someone in my party found a LIVE crawling bug in her salad . Once we asked to have the salad taken off our bill , the waitress replied " Well , sorry ... But the chef said the greens were ' Organic' . "

Horrible food and even worse service. We came in for happy hour and waited for 15 mins before anyone came over to our table. We asked if we could get the happy hour specials since it was now 5:35 but we had been waiting. The waitress was so awful that even the tables around us said something to us about her attitude.

My go to place when in Hanalei. Great food, ice cold tap beers and a friendly staff.

Banana margarita is the way to go!!! Spicy Thai wrap was delicious also. Everything on the menu seemed good. Even the brie sandwhich tasted awesome.

Clean and great service at Kalypso. The fish burger with Mahi Mahi was delicious. We ate here twice. It's kid friendly with virgin tropical drinks for the teens and a chalkboard area for the younger ones. The food had the local flavor and the building itself was open and inviting. We will visit again.

Pretty good food. My boyfriend had the fish & chips (he said the ones he had at keoki paradise yesterday were better). I had the potatoe skins & they were descent . Mai tai's were really good

I was hesitant about trying this place because if the mixed reviews. My husband recommended we stop by during happy hour for a late lunch with the kiddos. We took advantage of the $6 mai tai and piña colada prices. We also shared a burger and the kiddos enjoyed items from their kids menu. The portions are large and the food is slightly above average bar fare. We enjoyed our first visit so much that we all came back the next day. During our second visit I tried the chicken pesto sandwich and it was really good. Both days our waitresses were friendly and the food was tasty. We will be back next time we visit Kauai.

The food was very good and the waiter friendly. The service was quick and we enjoyed sitting outside. Why would we just end up giving 2 stars?! Well, the hostess was just super unfriendly. There was no "welcome", just looked at us, took 2 menu cards, threw them on a table and went away. We were pretty surprised and thought that she might just have a bad day. Next time I looked over to her, she was picking her ear, and observing (tasting) whatever had come out of there. It was pretty gross to look at. The phrase, 'you never get a second chance to make a first impression' fits pretty well.

Are go to spot for a quick bite and drink. The coconut shrimp are the best we've had and the Ahi is almost perfection add a Mai Tai and you are ready to continue your day. We had the Caipirinha a few years back and they were perfection. This time we tried them twice and were disappointed. We also tried the Huli Huli chicken and it was a bit dry. Could be that we got there late in the evening? Overall we will be back again for the Pupu's and drinks.

Expensive for the quality and amount of food. We had a cheeseburger, wings, very small cup of soup and coconut shrimp dinner plus 3 tap beers for $75. Not a bargain. Food was ok.. Loved the ambiance.

A lil touristy but it was good food...had the sea food burrito ...it was the size of a a toddler ...and delish

On our trip to Kauai we found very limited food options all around, which was unfortunate, but this place fit the bill for a solid meal at a reasonable price. Server was extremely friendly and food was very good, if not amazing. Waffle fries were a plus as well. Beats most places around here easily with wide selection of food

We happened in for lunch with the 2 kids. No real wait and the service was really pleasant. We both had the fish tacos and they were pretty good. The portions are enormous so for the moderate people, you could easily consider sharing. The kids had Mac and cheese and a hot dog. No real complaints from that end of the table. The game was on. It was warm. Our waitress was very nice. All in all, a good place.

Holy mahi mahi! This place is by far better than you would think. We are having a great night. We are nestled into the mountains of Kauai looking up from our patio having dinner. The name of the restaurant hurts them. It sounds carribean but it is pure Hawaii. We had the nachos to start and added the kalua pork. They lost money on this dish. It is huge with massive amounts of pork. It's hard to call this a starter. We even ordered one of our favorite wines. Merry Edwards Pinot noir. If you are in the know and have discreet tastes in wine you understand. If not read on and order a mai tai. This place has it going on. Next up we had the fish sandwich and fish tacos. The sandwich came on a locally made taro bun. One of the best ever. Please consider me an expert in this area! Trust me. It took energy to find this app on my phone and let you know. Food and view are as good as you can get. If we were not flying out tomorrow morning we would be having dinner here tomorrow night.

Nachose & poke. A+. Service, if you're a large party don't bother. The service is sub par for the amount of the obligatory tip.

I have been to this place dozens of times and it never fails to be delicious! The servers are friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere is nice and relaxing and the view is spectacular. I highly recommend Kalypso to all island visitors.

We went there for drinks. Positive experinece overall for Hanalei. Nice open space bar. They needed another bartender tho.

Great views, good food and drinks in a fun relaxed atmosphere. Our poke, claims and muscles were very good. It was a good stop for lunch.

The drinks are amazing, we got a blue hawaiian, tropical itch, and a Kauai piña colada. I recommend all three but maybe not at once because they provide a pretty good kick. The food was outstanding but the one that stuck out to me the most was the coconut shrimp.

Well, it went kinda like this... Mahi tacos with mucho meat! Juicy goodness... With a Chipotle dressing. Salsa was ok, no biggie. Ask for Tabasco if you want more spice. Black beans and Spanish arroz were the accompaniments. Mom had coconut shrimp with spicy sweet dip... Good good sauce. Dad had Cajun ahi with Papaya salsa. I'll try that one next time. Not sure about the bad reviews... But we had great meals and service. TWICE! Aloha

After hiking to the waterfall, we were famished. I needed a beer and food. I went with a Kona Longboard and thankfully both football and the Giants were on the tv. The spot was pretty busy and the male hostess took a second to greet us but understandable. Our server was friendly and attentive, unfortunately she let us know that they were out of poke. Such a bummer. But we did order the ahi tuna and the ponzu sauce was good. I had the bbq salmon salad in a shell. I actually didn't like the bbq with the salmon so I scraped that off and ate it without it. The ponzu sauce was a much better dressing in my opinion than what was provided so I requested another serving of the sauce for the large salad. I ate it all. Very good and it hit the spot. I stall in the ladies' restroom, a decent length of bar stools and numerous televisions. A cool spot to stop at in Hanalei and get yours sports fix.

Coldest beer on the North Shore and good variety of beers on tap. Great fish tacos and crab quesadillas. Nice atmosphere, became our favorite spot while on Kauai. Spot on service every time. While we were on the Island we just kept going back couldn't find anything we like better... Not a romantic setting just very casual and friendly, good portions of food and did I say cold beer... Oh ya ...

Don't let the 3 star review deter you. This place is solid. Good vibe, laid back. Good breakfast on weekends. Just not "gourmet" by any stretch. It's basically the same bar/restaurant you've enjoyed during every one of your vacations in the tropics.

Good food, always a good time had by Kalypso

Atmosphere was a 5 stars, service was a 3 star, food was maybe a 2 (very basic and flavorless food for the price you pay), location is prime so we had hoped it was going to be a score, false hopes.

This place gets a bad reputation. I'm not sure why! Because of some of the reviews and what our guidebook said about this place, we were hesitant to try this place but we were tempted by their convenient location and outdoor seating. We were there around 6:30 on a Saturday night. We were able to get an outdoor table and our waitress came by right away to take our drink order. I ordered the famous kalypso Mai tai and my husband ordered a 22 oz beer. Why not, we are on vacation! For dinner, I ordered their special pasta: shrimp and scallop pasta in a marinara sauce and my husband ordered the fish tacos. I ordered the right thing. Mine was sooooooooo good. So delicious. So amazing. My husband really liked his mahi mahi fish tacos. The food here is like the food everywhere on this island - really expensive. But it's delicious, great service, right in Hanalei!

I've heard so-so things about Kalypso but we really enjoyed our dinner. Drinks were great, order their lava flow! My fish and chips came out piping hot and cooked to perfection.

We loved this place so much we came twice in one day! (Granted it was our last night) We enjoyed their breakfast with acai bowls, Mac nut pancakes, and the breakfast burrito. ALL was amazing! Despite the awful review in the Kauai guide, we came back for dinner because we loved their breakfast and thought we had nothing to lose. And we didn't lose anything. The dinner was even better! Also! The service was great too, such friendly servers and they were really honest about their menu. We started off with calamari, even though the book advises against it. The portion could have been a bit larger, however it was delicious and the sauce that came with it was an excellent touch. I've never seen calamari cooked this way- it was a nice change. We also had the ahi special, the mahi fish tacos, and wahoo fish and chips... Such fresh fish! As visitors from Miami, take my word for it.. This place rocks for fish!

I can't believe that I had not been here before this last visit to kauai. I mean with all of the great places in Hanalei it can be difficult to visit them all in one trip but Kalypso is the spot if you want an island bar atmosphere in hanalei. Kalypso has a great happy hour that includes $5 mai tais, pina coladas and margaritas, along with some island beers and a variety of appetizers. We did happy hour a couple times on this last visit and ended up staying for dinner one night as well. The dinner menu has nice selection of options from typical bar food to seafood entrees. i ordered the seafood linguine which, was not only huge but, was packed with seafood and so delish. The atmosphere at kalyspo is fun. it's open to the street so it feels like you are on a large covered deck with a bar, which also makes it great for people watching. Each time we went there was a good crowd and the music was going. At night they light the tiki torches and it really feels like the perfect island spot. I will definitely be visiting Kalypso again next time I am back on the Island.

Just ok and reasonably priced. The coconut shrimp appetizer was good! The Waldorf salad was average. I wouldn't order it again. My husband's shrimp pasta was great.

Food was pretty good. Nothing too unique or awesome, but decent choices. Service was terrible. They all seemed slightly preoccupied with each other. Everyone that works here is 18-25 years old. I'm not saying people in this age group can't provide adequate service, I'm just saying that everyone here didn't. Sincerely, 25 year old male.

Steak nachos were to die for, followed that up with the mahi mahi salad. oMG so good. Love this place's 27 degree draft beer too!!!

The food isn't good, but the happy hour is. In all honestly, I wouldn't come to Kalypso for anything else but happy hour. The happy hour specials are good and I only come here for munchies anyway. The drinks have a tendency to be on the strong side and are worth the price for Happy Hour. That pretty much sums it up.

Why does this place get such low reviews?! We ate there for lunch, ate out on the patio with a party of 4, no reservation, and LOVED it! We tried: the teriyaki chicken with mango salsa, the sampler, the clams & mussels in garlic sauce over rice, the blackened fish with mango salsa & had Mai Tais. And we each had a little of everything. It was unanimous...everyone enjoyed all the dishes. The chicken fell off the bone and was juicy, the fish or clams & mussels weren't over cooked at all & we'll seasoned, the rice was wonderfully sticky, and everything on the sampler plate was great! The staff was great even though there was the lunch rush. Our waitress (forgot her name oops!) was patient and even took our picture for us. The bus boys were very quick and even asked if they could get us anything. We had a great experience there.

Listen I don't want to sound mean but Place was dirty Cups were dirty and old Food was so so, nothing memorable And the price was ridiculously expensive for what you get Don't waste your time and money since they are so many better places around.

This place wasn't bad at all. Casual (as if there are any other options besides casual on Kauai!), reasonable service, decent food, and STRONG drinks. Price point is fair (high - this is Kauai, hard to find cheap restaurant options) - we had the calamari app, which was good, shrimp tacos, and fish salad. All of the food was good / decent portion sizes for the prices. Back to the drinks - you'd expect them to be watered down given this is a tourist area, but they were not. Good 'n strong, just the way they should be! Definitely will be back...

Staff was pretty and friendly. Food was really good - plenty of moist meat in the pork quesadilla.

This is one of my favorite bars to hang out in the north shore. It's a great place to watch a game. It has the coldest beer and the best happy hour. The food and service are above average. The place is very open; you feel like you're sitting outside even at the bar. Best suited for adults. I highly recommend the place.

Mmmmm!!! The black and blue burger is the best hamburger I've had in a long, long time!!

    (5)
  • Mac W.

Barely deserves one star. Drink was served to me in a broken glass with an obviously previously used umbrella toothpick pierced through a peice of pineapple with dirt on it. Ordered the fish tacos which they self proclaim are the best in Hawaii. If that is the case, I will not be having another fish taco while in Hawaii. The fish was bland and overly cooked, dry, and chewy. To top it off - the dish cost $17.00. If you are just hungry, get a protein bar instead. Don't eat here just because there are so few choices on the North Shore. You will end up with a dent in your wallet and with a sick stomach.
