With all the food criticism shows on tv today and public awareness about quality places versus places that have issues, Calypso should be ashamed...We were very hungry when touring through Hanalei this past January 2013, so we stopped in. A bunch of younger female waitresses were walking around. It took about 10 minutes for one of them to approach and ask in an indifferent and nonchalant way if we wanted to order. I ordered a crab/ono wrap on the menu, my wife the fish and chips. As we waited and watched the sights, we saw one of the male busboys slap one of the female waitresses on the butt as she passed by and he laughed. Again in relation to common food shows on tv today - poor professionalism in direct sight of customers can mean that there are going to be other issues such as other unprofessional practices/food handling procedures in the back doors/kitchen area, where no one can see. At this point I knew we should have probably left but we really just wanted to eat something and move on to see more beaches. Suprise surprise, i ate the wrap which was bland and ok, but I don't recommend because: i got food poisoning hours later, the last two days were spent in comlete stomach/bowel agony. Took about 5 days total to get over. The seafood was obviously bad, unacceptable when fresh seafood is plentily available. So I don't recommend this place that has an air of unprofessionalism. Who knows if you'll stop in on a day when the food isn't safe. That could ruin your trip. If you have to go then just hang out at the bar, get a drink and chips or something. But in general, steer clear

This place is definitely worth going back to. Usually when a restaurant has the word Bar before Grill means that you should usually stick to the drinks and maybe appetizers because the Bar is where they want you to go. All the drinks I had were quiet tasty! We were there for Martini Mondays and I didn't leave disappointed. We sat at the bar and the bartender Jason was so polite & attentive. The hot wings are also pretty tasty! I would recommend this place for good drinks and appetizers.

Fell in love with the Loco Moco. Didnt sound to appetizing initially, but after the first bite....YUM!!

Okay food. I ended up getting the Huli Huli Chicken - was way over cooked. The seafood chowder was awesome. Great live music. For the price not bad but not great either.

Great location on the strip i Hanalei with ample parking out back. Standard pub fare in one of the most amazing places in the world, what more can you ask for? The beer is cold, the fried calamari is hot. Ask for Marissa and tell her Barb from Irvine sent you. That may not earn you a free appetizer, but that will sure trip her out. Auf.

Ultra salty onion rings didn't do much for me. The small plates were mediocre. Service was a tiny bit slow, but it has a resort feel - not shocking.

Fun Place to dine while in Hanalei. We had dinner here and the place was still packed at 8:30pm when they close at 9pm. I would imagine the wait will be pretty long at peak season but the food and service are worth it. If you want a quite, romantic meal, this is not the place. A lively crowd, local and tourist mix here and kids are very welcome. Had the nachos, fresh grilled fish burger (a slab of fresh Mahi, grilled just right!) and regular burger. All were well prepared and seasoned. Service was good - very good considering the amount of people! Also a good selection of local beers and island drinks along with the traditional beverages. TV's located at the bar show surfing and sports channel... what else could you ask for???

Nice ambiance but the food is barely edible. Fish & chips too greasy and fish tacos slathered in dressing. Artichoke appetizer was ok but sparse and the calamari appetizer was an embarrassment. Hanalei choices are limited though so you'll probably find yourself here at some point.

Only one guy working the bar (for both the bar and entire restaurant) on a VERY busy Friday night. He was very friendly and did his best to take of everyone. He did mention that it was busier than usual for the time of year. I had the Seafood Chow-Down (soup) and the Island Chick goes Italian (dinner) and they were both very good!

Hubs got baja style fish tacos, I got cajun chicken sandwich (only non-fish item I got on our whole trip). The food was decent, not outstanding. It costs $2 extra for a salad, and almost $3 for a juice. Didn't get a fancy tropical drink. It satisfied our hunger, but I wouldn't say it's anything to write home about.

Loved everything! Great ahi, great shrimp pasta, great mushroom ravioli, and great fish tacos. Delicious food and great atmosphere.

Initially our hostess wanted to take us to Kalypso the night of the Tsunami threat, but they had closed the whole day because of it. So the next day after a long hike, we were all famished and ready for a drink and some appetizers before we headed back to the condo to make dinner. Since it was on our way back, it was easy to stop in here for Happy Hour. We all ordered drinks and then we ordered some quesadillas and some nachos to share. Hmm, I know the crab quesadillas didn't settle to well with anyone. The chicken ones were ok. The nachos were EXCELLENT. The drinks were weak. The service was incomplete at best. I know we had ordered nachos, but somehow they had been forgotten and we had to ask where they were at. Somehow, they never made it on the order, so they were put onto the order and finally served. I think this place has more notoriety than anything and that is why they are still in business along with the fact that they have a great location.

Breakfast review: everything was cooked perfectly, and tasted darn good! Yeah, it's for tourists - but you are a tourist, get over it. I had the breakfast burrito (tomatillo sauce on side), which was awesome! Huge, filled with egg (whites), rice, peppers, local sausage, and cheese on top (not too much). Really, really tasty. My wife had egg whites, ham, and white rice - perfect for her, and also a large portion. Perfectly prepared and obviously made to order. Yum!

I really like Kalypso. I've been there several times, last time I had the burger they make with BBQ sauce, cheese and jalapeños. That was a seriously good burger. Their breakfast menu looks good too, but I think it's only served on weekends so I've never been.

Kalypso is the tourist bar & grill you can find in practically any tropical location. The food is pretty average and they have a huge selection of fruity cocktails. We stopped in after hanging out on Secret Beach (TM) all afternoon and got a nice table by the window to people watch. Our server was really nice, and we were pretty amused to find our crab quesadillas came with smiley faces painted on them with the spicy aioli sauce. Extra star for that one, dudes. Keep on keepin' on.

After a kayaking tour, my wife, friends, and I had built up an appetite and decided to drive into Hanalei to find a bite to eat. After checking out a few places our hunger took over and we settled on Kalypso. The place was pretty quiet but we still opted in eat inside rather than outside and being in Kauai I find it necessary to eat as much of the local fish as possible at every meal. That's night fish-of-the-day was Ono which told me I was getting myself the fish tacos. My wife ordered a fish sandwich, my buddy also ordered a fish taco, and his wife had the fish & chips. For drinks my wife and I decided to go for the guava juice which has been our juice of choice while on the island, sadly, this was the most watered down guava drink I've ever had. Then our meals arrived. These were served in portions that would make in taqueria in San Francisco proud and everything looked pretty fresh. The first bite into my taco and I knew I got the right thing, the fish and veggies tasted great which was concurred by my buddy who was having the same thing. I could also tell everyone else was liking there meals as everyone, shortly saying how good it was, got really quiet as we all enjoyed our meals. While eating I took the chance to eyeball the place which had multiple flat screens lining the restaurant playing various sports, the one that go my attention was FUELtv playing some motard competitions but besides the big screens the rest the place was setup with a fun/touristy tropical theme. Including thatched roofs and sea shell chandeliers. I definitely will be coming back to this place the next time I'm in Kauai.

My wife and I came here on our honeymoon for a drink and appetizer. We had muscles and clams and a crab quesadilla and everything was amazing. Great vibe sitting on the patio with good music.

It was ok. Not anything great. I had the loco moco, figured I'd try it. Maybe I should have tried food truck style as this tasted like fresh out of a Swanson Hungry-Man TV dinner. My wife had some taro cake eggs benedict that she really liked. My son's bbq cheeseburger was kind of chewy (Kauai beef?). My other son gobbled up the french toast. I'd try elsewhere first, at least for breakfast.

Group of 8 went to eat for lunch. Everyone was happy with their food. Service was good. Overall great. Nothing out of this world, but we were happy. The prices were decent almost half that of the dolphin restaurant down the street and the service was way way better. I had the ahi wrap special... 13.95. It was very yummy!! Calamari is excellent. Only thing one of the people complained about was the fish tacos weren't very flavorful.

Good food (especially the fish), beer and margaritas. The porch and balcony type seating let you be indoors and outdoors at the same time. It's certainly worth 4 stars; but when my wife and I ate there, a Hula school put on a performance in the park right across the street: Mahi Mahi +Hawaiian ale + ringside seat for Hula = 5 stars.

  • Rick B.

This place is just what you'd expect from the outside -- your basic island bar food. But it was just what I was in the mood for when we stopped, and it hit the spot. The salad that came with the sandwiches was good, and I had a fine mahi mahi sandwich, with a good cold (a temperature gauge at the bar said 27.5 degrees, don't know why they felt compelled to display that) draft fire rock to wash it down.

Good Baja style fish tacos. Get the Lilikoi Caipirinha if you like cacacha. Deliscious!

I headed there with my fiance for happy hour! The long island ice tea was strong but the taste was not too memorable in a positive way. The calamari appetizer was quite gross. They were rubbery & looked better than they tasted. The atmosphere was okay, very touristy if thats your thing.

We stopped by Kalypso for lunch. We ate here a couple of times last year and enjoyed it, so we figured we would try it again. We were seated promptly and our drinks arrived in a timely fashion. The sodas were flat, so all of them had to be replaced but that happens. The food took a little longer to arrive than normal but was OK. I wouldn't go as far as to say it was bad but it was forgetful. We most likely will not return here this trip. Overall, average for the price.

sit at the bar. order a margarita and ask for them to put the game on. My preference is hockey, but I don't always win that battle. when I do...you know who I'm cheering for. definitely the bar I tend to watch sports and enjoy happy hour at. visit on wednesday and happy hour all night long. have only really ordered the nachos lately...big enough to share and still have some left on the plate. margaritas (or beer). nachos. sports. makes a decent spot to cruise for any reason.

Makes a good pit-stop on way to North shore beaches! Catch the happy hour and you'll be much happier. Its nice to sit outside and people watch the hippie town. The service was okay, they had big screen tvs to catch up on the NBA playoffs, and baby birds running in on the floor trying to get some crumbs. Everyone was happy with their food, coconut shrimp, nachos, crab wrap, etc. The drinks were a little weak, but thats okay. I would go back!

  • Bob W.

I don't know why people are calling this a tourist trap. The food is fine, the prices seem in line with other places, and the drinks were stiff.

  • Foodlover W.

The foOd was delicious. I asked the server if they could make the seafood pasta with a creamier sauce. It was basically Alfredo but it turned out great. My husband had the fish and chips which had really large pieces of onO and waffle fries. The service was good. Our server was quick friendly and to the point. The only improvement I would make tO kalypso would be the pricing. It was a bit too pricey. My pasta dish should have been more like $17 and instead it was $25. Otherwise, we had a good experience overall. Ask to sit "outside" and you'll get a nIce breeze and view of the people and cars passing by.

Their Happy Hour can't be beat after a day of hiking, snorkeling or just laying on the beach. My husband and I were there every day for pina coladas, their local passionfruit wheat beer (Wailua wheat), and the coconut shrimp. Prices are great. Miguel is an awesome bartender. He's very attentive and prompt without being overly intrusive. If the ladies are bartending it will probably take a bit longer to get served as they're often chattering about last night's party and/or their man troubles. We were devastated when they were closed for a couple of days during our stay due to equipment issues. Luckily, on our last day in paradise they re-opened. We stayed for the entire happy hour and at the end as they were closing up Miguel gave us each a free pint. Thanks Miguel! We'll be back sometime soon, we hope!

Not a bad place to have a drink, but I was not at all impressed with the food. My wife had the ono wrap and it was rather disgusting. I knew it wasn't a good idea because the ono was fried (you never fry wahoo). The fish had a decent amount of blood line left on it and tasted overly fishy, but none of the other ingredients had any flavor at all. It's like when you are sick and can't taste anything. I could see the food, I could touch the food, but besides the crappy fish nothing else had any flavor at all. I was trying to go to Pat's, but they were closed.

Mango colada was amazing. Maybe the best drink I have ever had. Fish tacos were pretty good. Nothing amazing though. The rice and beans that came with were undercooked and lacking in flavor.

Kinda pricey. Average food. Nothing to write home about. Decent happy hour.

  • Brian J.

Make sure your time is in sink with their computer... We got charged the regular price even though it was happy hour. Note, the hostess gave us the happy hour menu and later said "kalypso's time is off". Both the server and hostess wouldn't change our bill. We Won't be going back. Food was ok. Like a chili's, but nothing to write home about. Mia Tia was good.

It's decent food that will fill your appetite. Don't expect anything high class here. They do have a few flat screen tv's showing sports which keeps you entertained as you're waiting for your food (which can be a decent wait at times).

  • Brett B.

Excellent happy hour, great drinks, and their nachos are some of the best I have ever had! I would definitely go here again!

    (4)
  • Kandy P.

Good for drinks, friendly service, my brother had the nachos which were pretty good. Fish & shrimp (what my mom and I ordered)...TERRIBLE. Overcooked, didn't taste at all fresh, just yucky. Really, the worst food of our trip. I'd go back for drinks and just hanging out, but not for a meal.

  • Kelly H.

I give four-stars for fun atmosphere, friendly waitstaff, and decent food in large portions (we had just hiked the Kalalau Trail and were ready to plow through some food). The food is average, but enjoyable and the beer selection is the same. We will go back.

    (4)
  • Sarah H.

Had lunch at Kalypso The service was pretty terrible. The drinks were very tasty, I had the Lava Flow which was a Pina Colada with strawberries... YUM The food was above average I thought. I particularly enjoyed the seafood chowder, and the crab quesadilla.

Standard tourist trap. Stepford waitress. When asked to be moved to an open table away from traffic, they said no and gave it to obvious honeymoon couple. When asked what fish of day was, told Mahi Mahi. When dish came, it was so obvious it was Tilapia. DON'T COME HERE! Find a Subway sandwich shop for better food and service.

  • Wendy K.

So I asked for no tomato on my grilled chicken panini. Was told the paninis are made in the morning--- why a paninis made in the am? So I asked for a side of avocado. Was told there was no avocado. That with lack luster service and a horrible piña colada made this horrible good experience worse. William(our server) sucks...

  • C M.

This review is for the service. It sucked! Our waitress was sooooo slooooow. I hate when the waitress drops off the bill and then takes forever to come back to get the money, and then takes even longer to return the change. Annoying! Im not in Kauai to be sitting in this mediocre restaurant! She didnt ever even bring us our food, the other workers did. This place was not worth a 40$ lunch that included ok nachos, ok fish an chips and ok turkey sandwich. We did get super full though and had leftovers, but then we felt like crap for the next few hours from the greasy food. Lame.

OMG this was brutal. I wanted to drive right to the airport and head back to Los Angeles--the land of mediocre food--after the lunch I had here. Fish Tacos made with FROZEN, completely dried out mahi mahi and crappy mexican rice and beans. The best thing about the meal was the thousand island type dressing on top of the tacos. I could barely eat it. Took a few bites and the crack waitress was like "how's everything". I should have vomited on her shoes. I cannot believe people think this is a decent place to eat.

Went here while starving after arriving on the first day of my honeymoon. Took a few minutes for the waitress to come over but the food and beer came quick. Ordered the coconut shrimp which was good. Also got the sweet and spicy wing combo. Spicy was good buy sweet had too much sauce. Was a bit overpriced but we were starving and it worked. Won't be going back though. Was just okay for a one time deal.

Worst service I've ever received in my life. My boyfriend and I walked in at 5, spoke to the hostess, and were seated. We informed her that we might have a few more people joining us but that we don't mind being at separate tables. We also specifically told her we were here only for happy hour drinks. She brought over our server and told her that all we wanted was happy hour drinks. The server seemed appalled. She said that if we have more people we can't sit separately and have to be moved to a bigger table all together and walked away. She came back about 5 minutes later and asked, "You guys are just doing happy hour drinks right?" we said yes and that we were ready to order and she said that she'd be right back. Confused, we waited for her to come back, but for 20 minutes she deliberately ignored us and walked around to every single one of her tables but ours. She literally took a drink order, food order and a whole round of waters for the table next to us without even glancing our way. Finally, at 5:29 she asked for our order and we asked if we would still be receiving happy hour because we'd been seated at 5. She said no because the happy hour had ended a minute ago. We were completely baffled and tried to reason with her but she insisted that we sat down without seeing the hostess and that slowed down the process of our order being taken so there was no way we could receive happy hour. We went ahead and gave her our drink orders anyways and after another 15 min. our drinks came and so did our tab, with a 18% gratuity added in for herself. When we protested, she said that our table "constricted her", "isn't something that the restaurant can do", "caused a bunch of miscommunication" and that we didn't see the hostess properly. Absolutely terrible service. This server was a brunette named Chelsea.

There seems to only be a few bars on Kauai. This place has a great happy hour and a few local beers on draft. I ate clams and mussels, which were great! The person next to me ordered calimari and it looked amazing...like none I have ever seen in Texas!

This is an OK place to eat, nothing spectacular- the main reason me and the friends I was traveling with stopped here was to have a light meal. The ambiance is nice and its pretty inviting but it was packed- naturally. Fortunately we got a seat on the patio, which was nice - wasn't too hot/muggy but it was a bit cramped- again naturally. Its right on the main road into Hanalei so there's plenty of opportunities to people watch (if you're into that sort of thing). The food its self was ok (again nothing spectacular) it is a little greasy but good. The happy hour is probably the best thing about the restaurant but I would eat here again.

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent... the food the location and the price. I think the only thing I questioned.. was the after dinner coffee. Just expierence this place for yourself. One you go, everything else just wont measure up.

My wife and I honeymooned in Kauai over the holidays. We opted to stay on the south side of the island near Poipu. However, after making our way around the island, it was clear we liked the north side better. This is how Calypso became our watering hole when we were up there. We happened upon Calypso for our first visit. We were hungry, consulting our trusty guidebook, Kauai Revealed, and looking for a spot in Hanalea. Calypso wasn't listed, but it was open, so we dropped in. Eating in Kauai could be rather expensive, so we were happy to see the menu was reasonably priced. After being seated and ordering, I noticed a basketball game on above the bar. My wife, though we are newly weds, knew me well enough to know it's best to just sit at the bar. Upon moving, we got to know the bartender (sorry, I can't remember his name) and he made the best pina colada's we had on the island. Super, dooper strong and yummy. I may even add dangerous as adjective, because they sure did the trick- it suffices to say I was thankful for the 35 mph speed limit on more than one occasion. I stuck with the beer selection. But after finishing our breakfast, and having inadvertently getting a great buzz, we were off to Tunnels to snorkel. A brief aside. So I even though it was our honeymoon, I was in first place in my football, with week 17 on Dec 29th. There was no way I was missing those games because I was in a position to win $3K. Thus, I knew where I was headed to watch the games. We returned on several occasions, once to watch games, once to eat, and few others for cocktails. In fact, we returned every time we were up north. The food is good. Good variety of beer on tap (for Kauai) and great mixed drinks. Thus, if you find yourself in Kauai for a vacation, I highly recommend checking this place out.

My b/f made me come here because it was the only place we could find a taro burger and we're obsessed w/ taro. He ordered the taro burger, i got a salad. It took a while to get and it was like I was dining at applebees. The burger didnt have much flavor and my cajun fish had WAY too much seasoning to the point it was overpowering the salad dressing. Otherwise, it wasn't horrible but barely good. I would consider this place a last resort-dining option that's good but don't run to it unless your starving without many other options.

  • Peter A.

Friendly service, pretty good food. Tourist prices. The had some folks playing island music, which was pleasant enough. I had ono (wahoo) tacos. The fish, rice, and beans were great; the tacos themselves were unremarkable. Strong, good mai tais.

  • Barbara K.

As most places in Hanalei this place is ridiculously expensive for dinner, based on what you get. I definitely wouldn't have gone here for dinner. BUT, we were there during happy hour so drinks were "cheap" and the food was good (although, we didn't try any of the happy hour food - quesadillas, nachos, etc.). I got the poke & calamari lettuce wraps, which were to die for, added plus for them for having Siracha sauce on hand - it was heaven in my mouth... Hubs got the fish sandwich (catch of the day - mahi), and it was pretty good, but not nearly as good as my wrap. Friendly vibe. Would definitely come back!

I found the atmosphere to be very inviting and the food was superb. The server was very sweet and attentive. I liked the fact there was a little fun station for the kids to play. The decor was really nicely done, it had the whole "island" thing going on. I absolutely loved the fish tacos. Nice and crunchy and the fish tasted so fresh. The one thing which really stood out was the cleanliness and the "shake shake shake" atmosphere. I was not in much of a partying mood but when I got there I couldn't help but go to the bar and ask the bartender for my usual margarita on the rocks and the next thing I knew he was doing the "shake shake shake" with my drink. I will definitely be back as soon as I can. I wish they had a Kalypso on the mainland.

We had been in Kauai a couple of days and every time we passed this place it was busy. So we decided to check it out for ourselves. I ordered the fish tacos and my husband ordered the mango chicken. The fish in the tacos had no flavor whatsoever. There were several reviews that the tacos were not to be missed. I really wish I had missed them. No flavor, no taste and not even much flavor to the beans and rice. My husband had the mango chicken and he said it was just chicken with a sauce. Also no flavor to the chicken. But he did enjoy the sauce. We were highly disappointed in not only the food but the service. Just a "meh" experience. We're definitely going back to the north shore of Kauai but we won't go back to Kalypso. The 2 stars is mostly for the view.

Nothing special, although if you can make it here before 5:30 they have a decent looking happy hour. I had a ono fish and chips, which was pretty good. Large portions, but definitely felt slightly unhealthy after eating all that fried food.

  • Lu W.

This place is as average as it gets. The service was pretty slow, which didn't feel entirely out of place in a slow-paced town like Hanalei. Not bad to hang out there after a surf session in the morning, I suppose, but you really can't be too hungry when you arrive. They'll make you wait till your stomach crow like a rooster that runs everywhere on Kaua'i. The bloody mary was no good. Coming from the genetic non-taster, it really means - no good.

The food was Meh....nothing to rave about The service was fair the decor was fair The drinks were good...and prices average for Hawaii

This place has a fond memory for me...good beer on tap, delicious fried calamari, and a big widescreen where we watched our SF Giants beat the Phillies. Apparently this place fills up early on Sunday morning for NFL football games...hilarious.

The food was good for a bar and grill menu. We preferred this over Bouchon's, as we waited there a very long time only to be told they didn't have one of the items we had ordered. Service was pretty good but not terribly kid friendly. They do have a changing table in the bathroom, but the waitress(s) repeatedly placed beverages and hot items in front of a small child.

Food, beer, and service were all ok. It was pretty busy when we were there and the service was still good. We sat outside and relaxed and ate our lunch. It wasn't my favorite lunch while on Kauai, but it wasn't bad.

Waitress was annoying. Arg fake happy makes me mad. Husband's tri tip sandwich was dry and mostly fat. What wasn't fat was good. My shrimp tacos were ok. Atmosphere is cool.

Meh! I've had WAY better. This place was suggested by a local over Tahiti Nui...the guy must be getting kickbacks because the Mai tais were TERRIBLE!!! Don't waste your money here....go to Tahiti Nui instead....it may look old, but the food and drinks are a million times better! I WOULD NOT recommend kalypso.....bad drinks and no character.

Nothing special, but it was hard to find any other restaurants rated high in the area. It served its purpose for lunch. The fish tacos were too saucy and not as tasty as they should have been. The taro veggie burger was a little bland - probably should have expected this, but I figured if you season the burger right, taro wouldn't be that bland. Service - OK, atmosphere - OK, food - OK, but not great.

you put the lime in the coconut and drink it all up...... really the only place on the north shore to watch sports with a drink in your hand. happy hour is worth it. $3.50 pints of Kona Brewing. cheap, fried bar food and various cocktails. Wednesdays are happy hour alllllll night. Mondays are martini night. tuesdays are margaritas!! bartenders are on it. i have probably been here 20 times and always sit at the bar. Why? why not i say! if your paying attention, dig out to catch the sunset at hanalei bay! definitely worth it.

Ok, stopped by for lunch today with the wife as it was our last day on the island. Normally, the staff is acceptable, but today our waitress was mentally in another place and attempted to be deceiptful to my wife. I ordered the Fish Burger (Mahi Mahi Sandwich) and my wife ordered the oriental salad. Now for the tale of two entrees. The Good --- The fish burger was good as always, good size portion. Asked for extra lemon and got it. It was pleasantly grilled and cooked to perfection. It is normally something I get so, no surprises here. It came with waffle fries which were pretty good. The Bad-- The wifes oriental salad came and she immediately noticed something not right at first bight. Had a couple of more bites and pushed it aside and called the waitress. Asked the waitress if they used won ton strips or tortilla strips. At first, the waitress says they used won ton strips but my wife insisted they tasted like tortilla strips. The waitress finally admitted that they used tortilla strips. To add to the disappointment, the tortilla strips were stale. I suspect the waitress took us to being a couple of mainlander tourists who are unfamiliar with oriental salad, be we are from Honolulu and know better. The bottom line is that she was not honest with us and tried to deceive us and there is just no excuse for that. She did take the salad back and took it off of the bill. It has been my experience that if you go to a bar and grill, stick with the pupu's (appetizers), specialties and sandwhiches and you won't be disappointed. If you follow this at any pub and grill, you will not be disappointed. One star for the trip due to the integrity of our waitress as there is no excuse for lying. Other than that, it would have been five for my meal and one for the wifes which would have been a three. Normally, it is a 4.5.

My family and I had a good meal at Kalypso tonight. We got there just as the kitchen was about to close, but we were not rushed or made to feel like we were keeping anyone. Great service by Missy, also originally from Santa Cruz. :) we all started with the seafood chowder which was great, although a bit thick for my liking. The Ono fish and chips were...Ono!! Large, thick pieces of fresh Ono with a light batter treatment. The accompanying waffle fries were large and perfect with the fish. My daughter had the shrimp tacos, huge portion with big pieces of juicy shrimp served on a platter with black beans and rice. Reasonably priced also, for Kauai. All around a good, solid meal.

My mother-in-law and mother went with me to this place last year. The food left us disappointed. We each got a seafood dish. To our surprise it wasn't the freshest seafood we have ever had. Really? This is an island, how it is NOT fresh? I will say though this has great views of the waterfalls and is a GREAT place to catch the Sunday football games while away from home.

Fantastic service, great place for lunch, NFL football on Sunday for us island visitors, I am from San Diego and there were like 12 Charger fans there....really good hamburgers

My wife and I spent 7 days in Princeville to celebrate a belated honeymoon. Hanalei is just a few miles west. My wife and I made several visits to Kalypso during our stay. We loved the fish (mahi mahi) sandwich. It was fresh and delicious. We had Sunday breakfast there, too. (The omelette was pretty tasty.) We also loved the nachos on Monday. They came with black beans which were great. (We had them include a fillet of fish (ono) with the nachos. Yummmm!) The place is busy during their happy hour. If you imbibe, that would be a good time to visit. The service was great. Alyson and Tami were right on top of our needs. Having never been to Hawaii, the service, courtesy, and friendliness of the people was an unexpected pleasure .It is not that Kalypso is necessarily the best place to visit in Hanalei, but the atmosphere is relaxed, and there are plenty of flat screens to watch the MLB play-off and NFL games. We visited other eateries in Hanalei, but returned to Kalypso. The memories I have of my visits to Kalypso warm my heart. Hope your visits are as happy and pleasant as ours.

Fish was pretty badly overcooked in the fish tacos and mahi tostadas. Two stars for the good vibe

Kalypso is great in terms of location. Awesome that they play Fuel TV, not awesome that their pina colada was watery and just sort of thrown together. Go to Tahiti Nui down the street if you can.

  • Larry M.

Primarily a tourist stop on the North Shore with average food and drinks and above average prices. Nice TV's at the bar and they show most sporting events. They do have a decent Happy Hour from 3:30 to 5:30pm but they won't tell you about it unless you ask. That's the best time to go to Kalypso if you are looking for a deal.

  • Sam M.

We stopped in here right after surf lessons for a quick bite. The staff was very friendly and a very laid back atmosphere...but isn't that how Kauai is anyways. I ordered the Caesar Salad, which was okay. Could have used more dressing but the croutons were pretty fresh. It was well priced but pretty average.

My wife and I decided to stop here to eat because it was the first thing we saw to eat at. Were were seated promptly and the our waitress was super friendly. The place was semi-busy but it didn't take too long to receive our food. I ordered a burger which was fine since it tasted like any other burger. We also order the Macho Nacho which I would say was hard to eat. You would have to find the chips within the heavy amount of melted cheese they place on them. I had to stick my fork in and dig out whatever was inside. Other than that the place had a nice vibe and food was ok.

Decent food for okay price. Very busy, service was lacking. Very loud. Full of kids and drunk people. But if you are desperately hungry and it's pouring rain, it's okay.

this place has the best calamari ever! we came here a few times during our stay in Kauai and were big fans of the happy hour deals here after the beach (i think it's from 3-5:30). the bar closes early though (around 9pm), but I think that is the case with every bar in Kauai.

    (4)
  • Andy M.

Ahi poke with calimari was great, broke da mouth was good, and seafood linguini was good. Cocktails were great.

Ok we had the best outside seat, just after happy hour on a summer afternoon. Hanalei is crowded this time of year. Some nice taps and wine at half off for a bottle. The service was great from the receptionist to the bus. Sadly the food was just a step above frozen dinners. Some items are always good like waffle fries but any more complicated and it's not gonna happen here. We don't usually stop in Hanalei to eat because it has a captive constituency. Prices and quality demonstrate the effect. Things change beginning in Kapaa!

The is a great place to watch sports, have a nice cold beer (good draught selection and kept nice and cold!) and enjoy casual food. The Mahi Mahi taco salad was delicious and I really liked the Taro Burger, hearty yet not too filling! We hit this place 3 times while we were in Kauai and will be back on our next trip. Service was friendly and on top of their game all 3 times. The locals at the bar were also really friendly which added to our enjoyment! Strongly recommend for sports fans as they have many tv's and it is a fun place to watch games!

Is Bar Acuda closed ? Then head over to Kalypso. To be fair I haven't been to Bar Acuda but I hear good things. The service was fair, the food not so much. The atmosphere was just fine.

We come here every time we visit Kauai, the service is always good and the drinks are great. For a fun drink we get the tropical itch (they come with a back scratcher). This place has great fish & chips, this one of our favorite dishes here. We have always had a good meal and good time every time we come here.

My whole family really enjoyed this restaurant. I split the fish tacos and a salad with my mom -- they were great! My sister had the taro burger and really enjoyed it. I'd definately stop there again if I'm haver in Hanalei!

  • Jean C.

We stopped here after the beach and before our next stop and had lunch. I ordered the caesar salad and the hubs got the fish and chips. The salad was big but had a tad too much dressing. The garlic bread was good. Hubby liked his fish and chips. It's an open restaurant with a great breeze flowing throughout the entire place. Our server was nice and friendly. Lunch was $30 with tip which has been pretty average for a lunch on the island.

    (4)
  • eric l.

Meh, overpriced greasy american food. Panini are all pre-made and have stupid amounts of cheese and sauce such that you can't really taste any of the actual filling. Local fish is OK. The service was decent but no way I would be back with so many other options available. If you are looking to drink and eat greasy food while watching a game then it's probably fine if you don't mind the prices.

We came here after a long day of hiking and it happened to be happy hour. We came here on a previous trip and couldn't remember whether we liked it or not but I was staarving so I didn't care at that point. We ordered fried green beans and onion rings. I didn't like the breading and it didn't really have any flavor. I ordered a burger and my bf ordered a taco platter. It was just ok. I don't think I would come back here to eat. There are way better meals I've had in Kauai. The drinks are pretty good though. Yummy mai tais.

Three stars for the HUGE, and I mean humongous portions. Got the crab quesadilla (which was a little cold, but maybe it was because it was crab. Does that have anything to do with it? 'cause it shouldn't...) Also ordered the nachos which resembled a small planet. Needless to say there were leftovers. Minus a star for the price which is pretty expensive for chain restaurant food (to echo the other yelpers) however the portions may have something to do with it being pricey. Another star minused for the service/waitress who kind of sort of may or may not have had a little attitude which was less than hospitable. I left feeling full and satisfied, but wouldn't return to this restaurant if I ever found myself again on the beautiful island of Kauai.

  • Neil S.

Great location with unbelievable possibilities. A typical local bar. Local service with sub-par food. The service was ok. However The waitresses were gathered at the regrister texting and calling to friends as they cross the street. I know it was a slow night but Please focus on the job. The girls had the best looking out of the frozen box coconut shrimp. They matched a mango relish with the shrimp which was ok. Had shrimp tacos which was ok but beware of the rice and beans. Danger!!! The best part was Stella on sale. My advise, stay away this is a tourist trap.

Nice sports bar but not a great place for dinner. We had a very unimpressive meal but worst of all the drinks were TERRIBLE. I asked the waitress to return one drink that was so awful. We will not be back. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

    (1)
  • Eric G.

The food was TERRIBLE. This was the worst place we at at on the island. One of my companions actually got FOOD POISONING from the fish and chips. That's not cool. I had the fish tacos. The fish was overcooked (or re-cooked?) and the tortillas were the rubbery store-bought variety. Everything was either instant or from cans. The "chef" here should be fired immediately.

Our first night in town (3rd time on the island) my wife and I were in the back entry way reading the menu. A waiter noticed us and started asking if we had any questions he could answer. He answered a few and then said, "Hey, come on in you will love this place". I am in sales and customer service, I loved how this guy sold the restaraunt in a very courteous way, and was not going to let us go anywhere else so to speak. The nachos were great, my fish was great, my wife's chicken panini was great, service was spot on. No complaints.

Love the fun flair to this restaurant as well as the large menu. I've been here for a few breakfasts and dinners, and I've never been disappointed. The pancakes are INSANE- so big, and really tropical flavor combinations. The sandwiches and salads are all delicious, as are mixed drinks. Never ordered anything I didn't love.

  • Michael S.

We came here for dinner and was a bit pricey but was really pleased to see they served lunch here all day. I had the Hawaiian burger that was great with the roasted pineapple and waffle fries. My wife had a Cesar wrap. The deserts looked huge as well. We liked it so much we came back a second time so I could try a wrap and it did not disappoint. I got the Thai spicy wrap and it was delicious on a hot afternoon. And the staff was so nice. Keep up the great work guys!

Dropped in after a day at the beach. $3 Coronas, can't beat that deal. Decent service. Good food. Reasonable prices. Actually very reasonable after eating at St Regis and The Westin. Perfectly cooked teriyaki burger and fries. We will go back. By the way, the place was packed Monday at 2:30 but we didn't have to wait for a table.

  • Vanessa E.

Service was decent and they catered to my gluten allergy so they get kudos for that. This is basically a sports bar with a decent variety of bar food and a few good salads, sandwiches and apps like potato skins and nachos. I ordered the fish tacos which were grilled fish with cabbage, tomatillo sauce, chipotle cream and salsa on the side, served with black beans and rice. They were pretty tasty. Hubby ordered tri tip sandwich with waffle fries; he said the meat and the bread was pretty good. If you're looking for good food with a casual bar atmosphere, this is a good spot. They have a nice patio with a view of the napaali mountains, so we weren't complaining!

  • Steven N.

Though it was expensive compared to the value added, we came here multiple times while staying in Kauai. (There's not oo many otehr options for sports bars and the NFL playoffs were on.) They had ~10 TV's which was great for watching football, but be advised it's a 49ers bar! (Eww) Servers were nice but not the sharpest. Food was overall great.

  • Kelsey P.

Great atmosphere and food! The mango-teri wings and burger were fantastic! My fiancée literally switched out her entrée to get more wings, which the waitress was completely helpful with. Great service, delectable food, relaxed atmosphere, and decent prices compose a fun experience. Highly recommend it!

After spending the morning hanging around a couple of beaches and enjoying the beauty of the island (OK, and a few drinks) we were on the hunt for a fun place to spend our first afternoon on the island. Kalypso was the perfect spot for us to land, pretty good food in a nice relaxing atmosphere. Our waitress quickly got us started with a round of drinks and we settled into the open-sided dining area. The weather was perfect and having the room opened up added to the ambience in a big way. I got the Fresh Fish Burger, which on this day was mahi-mahi. It was cooked very nicely, otherwise nothing too spectacular. Not that I was looking for anything off the charts anyway. I had just got to the island the night before and I wanted some fresh fish, and it hit that spot quite nicely. The waffle fries were also good, it's always nice to see a change from the standard side of fries. My girlfriend got the fish & crab wrap and loved it. Others in our group got the fish and chips (liked them), a burger (thought it was very good but wished he had gotten some fish), and the kalua pork quesadilla (not impressed, thought it was a clash of tastes). Most importantly the beer was cold, the drinks were well mixed, and the service was great. What else really matters when you're on vacation?

Should of went to happy hr here instead of going to Tahiti Nui but I stopped back later that night. The food portions are huge. The menu is a little pricey but I guess that is the norm on any island in Hawaii. There are some reasonable dishes. The nachos and fish sandwich were really good. I'd go back the next time I'm in Kauai. Really cool live music on friday night. Pretty much the only place rocking in the area around that time.

  • Russ S.

Dined here as it was one of few options for breaks at. Nothing special about the food but our server Jessica made up for it with her smile. Good waterfall and mountain view if weather cooperates. Go with low expectations and you won't be disappointed..

  • Barry K.

Went for the drinks, left disappointed after the first round. Had already been convinced by a consensus of multiple reviews, guide books, and local word of mouth not to *eat* here but I'm a sucker for happy hour. Had their Mai Tai and was very disappointed. It was watery weak. Not even the juice was tasty. Inside their open air dining room was hot and stuffy. Service was ok. Crossing these guys off the list.

Hanalei doesn't offer a lot of higher end food options and caters to the tourist crowd. Ended up here and wasn't disappointed or overly impressed. 5 stars - Ordered a long board lager and it was ice cold. 3 stars - Food was decent but not great. Ordered the crap quesadilla and fish and chips.

Kalypso is a very good option for lunch, an afternoon snack, or dinner M-F and is open for breakfast on the weekends. Happy Hour 3:30-5:30 every day (and all night Wednesday's) is a nice draw,- food discounts include Calamari and Coconut Shrimp, and for drinks a few tap beers on special and a couple of discounted drinks. At dinner don't be afraid to order the special- it's often delicious, particularly if it features a fresh fish. The Ratatouille Linguine is an unusual dish for Kauai, and since I'm here a lot for business I find it a refreshing change of pace. Very popular hangout for watching sporting events- which of course are almost always early in the day on Kauai. So if you've got a game you want to see, they've got 4 large TVs and seem to get all the channels. Service is friendly, cheerful, and casual, and the Bartenders tend to make very good top shelf drinks. Had a Cadillac Margarita with Don Julio the other day that was a truly fine way to end my day!

We stopped here for happy hour after a grueling 8 mile hike. While I'd pass on the artichoke heart appetizer, their coconut shrimp was delicious, the best we've had. We ordered Wailua wheat beers which were served quickly and ice cold. Service was solid. Just a fun place to sit outside street side and people watch and enjoy some ice cold beers in paradise.

This is a solid dinner bet in a town that doesn't have a whole lot going on. There are a ton of reviews here already so I'll keep it brief. I had the fish and chips which were nicely done in a beer batter. They look like fish sticks but don't taste like it! My friend had fish tacos which she said were really good (along with the rice and beans). The guy next to us gave us a sample of the calamari appetizer. This was *outstanding*. Very very tender, I wouldn't have guessed it was squid. Definitely worth an order. My friend also had a "Wai Tai", which I gather is a mai tai with dark rum. This was a really good drink. Try it!

I agree with others that the tables are sticky and yes, it's pretty toursity. That said, the food we've had was good. The spicy ahi salad is yummy and the shrimp tacos good. The best thing about the Kalypso is the view (if you get a table outside) and the cocktails, which are strong and taste good.

It is what it is... your much needed quintessential tourist trap restaurant that makes tourists feel like they aren't tourists giving them, the feeling that they are locals... They are running a good business from what i can tell... strong pina colada's go for happy hour!

yea yea yea, Kalypso is a tourist trap. But the drinks are good, so who cares.

  • Jamie W.

Great location and atmosphere, but so-so menu and food quality. The lunch menu is better than the dinner menu, but that's not saying much. The calamari used to be phenomenal (especially when it was Zelo's), but now is average. Strange that there are no fresh, non-deep fried fish options. Great desserts though! Back again and still agree with all the above. If it didn't take so long to just get a beer, I'd order more beverages!

    (2)
  • Deb R.

Paniolo burger was perfect! The service was gracious, speedy and accurate, even though there was quite a lunch crowd. Kind of a sports bar feel, with a few big screen TVs going. Fun friendly atmosphere with really good food!

I had gone for happy hour and the drink and food prices were great. I had calamari they came out as six steaks the like of I had never seen before. I highly suggest them. The nachos looked totally legit, but I did not try them. Beer and calamari for less than $10 was great after surfing.

    (4)
  • Steve C.

My wife had Coconut Shrimp and it was really great. The service here was fine. We also had a couple of Tiki drinks in hurricane glasses. This was a fun place to eat and I would recommend it to anyone in Hanalei.

2.5 meh is kind of how I would describe my experience here. I couldn't get any cell reception in the area, so I wasn't able to check my yelp app. Seeing all the people inside the restaurant made me think that it would be a good choice, but it was definitely filled with a ton of tourists. The food isn't bad but there isn't really anything special. Service is a bit slow, and my food came out semi cold.

Slow service. Disgusting fish tacos. Seafood pasta was good and so was the beer. Wont be back......

Husband's fish burger was blah --- you could make something better at home for a fraction of the cost. What really got us was the unmentioned additional expenses -- that is so unforgivable and disrespectful to guests. My brother in law ordered 2 drinks, and each time the waitress asked "with local rum?" without mentioning that this was an extra $2 per drink. I ordered fish tacos -- for I think $15 or $16 -- and was asked if I wanted sour cream, avocado and jalapenos. She asked this, of course, as though it was common and expected -- like, a "do you want mayo on your burger" sort of question. Little did I know (because she didn't TELL me when offering), this was an additional $4 ish total. Not cool to take advantage of tourists, but sadly, that seems to be the norm here. Steer clear.

Clam chowder should be called clumpy chowder...chunks of flour, thick as stew, disgusting. The ubiquitous mahi for catch of the day.-have they heard of Uku? Had to ask for it grilled as it wasn't an option on the menu and server made it happen. Thank You!- Service very friendly. Oregon IPA on draft chilly and yummy.

First off its important to note I live here in Kauai.. The food was poor but the worst part was the restaurant staff. They stand in the corner of the restaurant and socialize with each not paying any attention the customer. I spent a solid 30 minutes waiting to order a beer from my server, he simply never came .Goto another place to eat in Hanalei!!!! I will never come back to Kalypso, every aspect was HORRIBLE.

This bar is a prime location for tourists and fun. Lots of restaurants, souvenir shops and the beach. What a stunning beach! I love this town! Great happy hour here, excellent prices. The food is pretty good. Although the bartender from NJ would not serve you another drink until you finish the one you're working on...I've never seen that in other bars. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience.

Came here unsure what to expect with the mixed reviews, but was pleasantly surprised. We ordered 2 pupu's (appetizers) and the fish tacos, and shared everything. The coconut shrimp was really great. Crunchy outside, moist inside, with a nice really nice taste. Tasted fresh. The calamari was really thick pieces, breaded nicely but not too heavy. Really enjoyed this. The fish tacos were good, but not great. The fish was a little overcooked and not seasoned as far as I could tell. The overall taste was good, but a little bland for me. It could have used some seasoning, hot sauce, or stronger flavors like mango or cilantro. Something to give it a kick. I got the Kauai Tai and loved it. Tasted great, but might have been a little light on the booze. But I only say that because of the taste - maybe it was just that good! My wife got the "Tropical Itch" and she really liked it as well. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. We got to sit at a table that's semi-outside, and it was fun people watching. The overall atmosphere was fun and casual. Prices were pretty good as well. I would come back here for sure.

I live on island and was eager to try this restaurant. A party of three, we walked inside and were immediately seated. The waiter was pleasant and answered all my questions with great knowledge. The menu is a bit overpriced in some areas, but overall, not too bad. I ended up getting the Mahi Mahi tostada salad. It was so GOOD and so FRESH. I was very satisfied with the meal. Here's where it went wrong: A few hours later after consuming this meal, I got a massive MIGRAINE, onset nausea and vomiting. I developed wonderful food poisoning. Now, I would normally write it off since I had been eating at other establishments. However, reading previous reviews stating FOOD POISONING, I think I will stay clear of this restaurant. I wish I could say I'd be back, but Kalypso, it seems as though you guys need to review proper food handling procedures.

Shrimp Sautéed Pasta... The sauce and pasta was a homerun, but the shrimp just missed the 5 star mark.

  • Melissa W.

The only reason i'm giving this place two stars is because both the host and waitress were really nice. The host seated us in their last outdoor table even though there was only two of us and it was a four topper. We both ordered the huli huli chicken, they brought it to us about 5 minutes later which concerned me right away since it was obvious it hadn't been cooked fresh. The chicken was cold, dry and overcooked. We were both really worried we would get food poisoning from the couple of bites we had, thankfully we did not get sick. Would not return.

2.5 Stars More of the same Hawaiian tourist trap of over-pricing and under-delivering. My "medium" burger came out beyond well done and, much like the rest of our food and drink, was not worth half its asking price. Our waitress was nice, but that's about it.

  • Kyung L.

The fish and chips are yummy. They give you a good amount of fish for the price. Waffle fries are a step up from your usual fries. I also had the seafood chowder. Very creamy and actually felt there like they used real fish for their chowder. They have $3 margaritas at happy hour. And you can get happy hour at the table, not just the bar. The only downer is they ran out of crayons for my daughter. Decent prices for the quality of the food.

The Mrs. and I decided to stop in for some fish tacos. Overall, a terrible experience, the service was nonexistent and the food was lacking. The tacos were ok but the rice and beans were subpar. Our server was slow in taking our order, slower in bringing our order (food was cold), and slowest in bring us the bill. You really are better off looking for another place to eat.

The service here was good. We ate lunch and dinner here one day because they were open later than the other restaurants. The food is very okay but nothing special.

The food was soso aka no flavor! Service was soso too & the prices were too high. On the plus side the Mai Tai's were decent so this a place more for drinks & appetizers.....I personally wouldn't recommend anything else.

Good food. Large portions. Pretty quick service. Better value for your dollar than a lot of the resteraunts around that small area.

Ordered the crab crusted fish and coconut shrimp and two drinks. Everything was super sugary and the service was mediocre. This was reviewed in kauai revealed and I feel the same: it seems to be a popular place with the younger crowd but I don't know why. I spent $80 food and drinks we could barely choke down. Never going again except maybe for a beer (how could they mess that up?)

Positives: View from front patio, beer prices. Negatives: Food! Not as described on the menu. I had the shrimp pasta. On the menu it said had a "splash" of cream sauce. It was drowned in cream. My S.O. had the chicken parmesan. He loves chicken parmesan and declared it to be the worst he has ever had. The chicken filet was dry and looked burned. We would not recommend this place. There is better food on the north shore.

I came here for lunch after a failed attempt to find Pat's Taqueiria. Was seated immediately in the front right outside, where I could enjoy a beautiful view of the mountains. Service was prompt and very friendly, waitress was great. Far be it from me to tell you what to eat, but I had the ono and crab wrap. It was awesome! They use a tomato basil tortilla wrap and fill it with their special blend of crab meat and golden fried ono. I also like that they have waffle fries here as those are my favorite kind of fry. Prices here seem pretty standard for the island. Overall, this is worth a lunch stop if you're visiting Hanalei or driving through.

This place is Awesome!!!! Great food, excellent prices, relaxing setup, top servers. Our 8 day stay in Kaui- we ate there 6 times. Tried one other place just to see how it would compare- not even close (it had a fish name-hint Flipper).fish and chips were PERFECT every time. Ahi tuna sashimi was super fresh and perfectly seared and crusted with sesame. Fish tacos were fresh and healthy with black beans and rice. Weekend brunch was killer! Banana pancakes were to die for! Loco moco was excellent. Big portions fresh tasty food. Only minor downfall was bad coffee-that was my fault-should have ordered an after dinner cocktail instead ;) Do it!!

We came to grab a quick bite for lunch. My hubs got their fish tacos and I got their mahi toastada. Overall I feel like they have good quality food with decent portions, but there's just 10% missing in all their foods. The fish tacos were good and they had really good rice and beans on the side, but nothing special to it. The tostada had a good size fish on it, but the fish was overcooked and not the greens were too bitter without anything else to balance it out. It's a meh place for me

Hit this place hours after landing with some friends. Typical bar food and it was good, but overpriced. We were seated right away and the service was excellent. We tore up the appetizers and cocktails. Coconut shrimp, ahi poke and burger were great. Chelsea was our waitress and she had a great personality and took care of us for the 3 hrs we drank and drank.

Food was really good! We had the special of the day - a seafood wrap that was excellent and turned out to be one of the best things we ate during our stay on Kauai. Beer selection was also good - we had the Firerock Red on draft. Only issue was with the help, who seemed to spend A LOT of time standing around talking and laughing with each other while we were waiting for water, etc.

nice location. nice ambiance. nice wait staff. The food is pricey considering the portion. The loco moco was priced at $13++ and the bucket of mussels and clam at $16 . IT didn't come in a bucket but in a small bowl. it says a pounds worth but I think I only got like half of that or less. We found a lesser loco moco at $8 bucks at the local bakery by the chinese strip mall

It was a busy Friday night when we checked this place out. We were seated within 10 mins, and while we waited we were served immediately at the bar. Great service, food is good, and the band was easy on the ears.

Not bad at all. Had a Ono and crab wrap with waffle fries while we sat at the bar on a Sunday afternoon. The Missus had a mahi mahi sandwich that was tasty. Definitely a cut above what often served up in a touristy spot like Hanalei. They had the NFL games on, but even then it wasn't too noisy. Beer was cold with an adequate, if not stellar, selection of brews. I would have been much happier if they had more local craft brews. Hawaii may not be on par with other brew rich states, but there are some good local product. All in all, I would recommend it. Service was good and friendly.

My parents and I came here after a day of driving along the coast and being in the sun & water & paddle boarding. It was the perfect dinner to end our day. This was the only meal throughout our whole Kauai trip that all 3 of us completely finished off our plates. I got the fish tacos, my dad the jambalaya, and my mom... i think a chicken dish? We all enjoyed it as well as our breezy table on the balcony. I also had to have a lava flow to make it the perfect vacation meal. Oh, and when we were deciding where to go for dinner, I actually asked a local for his opinion, and he said that he and his friends really like Kalypso's fish & chips. Hey, if both tourists and locals like this place, I'd say it's a winner!

Great food, great bar, great staff, and fun ambiance. What more could you ask for in a restaurant located in a secluded island town?! The breakfast burrito is quite possibly the best on the plant - and trust me, I've had a lot of breakfast burritos in my time! :-) Oooh! Try the "Cramosa"! It's a pleasant twist on a traditional breakfast beverage!

This review is based solely on the taro burger. Sounds delicious, right? It should, considering the other taro burgers I've had were phenomenal. Let me start off by saying the menu states it is served with avocado, sprouts and a few other things. I ordered the meal and the server tells me (so nonchalantly) they are out of avocado. *gasp* WHAT?! My heart was instantly broken, not to mention my stomach . She didn't care that my dreams of avocado being smeared over my face after each bite were gone. Without even pausing, she quickly says, "That's OK, right?". I needed a brief moment to recover, so I ask if I can have pineapple. She redeemed herself by saying I could. We are friends again. :-) My husband and I both ordered the same thing. Our food came out quickly. Which is why there is at least one star. I take a bite of my "burger" and I can't believe my mouth. I honestly thought it was playing a cruel joke on me like my brother used to when were kids. To my dismay, it was not. The so-called taro burger was a giant scoop of mashed taro. By the time I attempted my second bite, my bun had disintegrated into mush. I think actual raw hamburger would have held up better than this stuff. Time came for the bill. My new friendship was over again. She charged us each and extra $2 for the pineapple. If you go here, try something else on the menu. The other food looked and smelled good.

A nice alternative if Tahiti Nui is packed. Service here is quick, the coconut shrimp and the shrimp tacos were amazing. Skip the nachos, they were just okay. Prices are a bit steep (I think it was 18 bux for 2 shrimp tacos), but still worth a visit if you are in the area looking for a decent meal!

We stopped by for lunch a couple of days ago. Fish Tacos were average at best ($17-), go down the street to Tropical Tacos. The Hamburger($13-) was good. But nothing you couldn't easily cook at home for $2-. Service was ok.

I've had really good food and really bad, but overall its a place I go back to. I love the Waldorf Salad and its huge. I order it with shrimp. Pricey but like I said you can split it. Ask for the basil dressing on the side. Their coconut shrimp is very good too. Order the mai tai. If you think its watered down, ask for another. Always a fun place to go.

Great location - in the middle of Halanei. The food was a-ok, nothing special. The service was mediocre but better than other joints in Kauai. All in all a safe place if you are looking for something reasonably yummy in the North Shore.

I am an admitted food snob, I only give reviews if I find something on the menu that is an absolute "must try" the Seafood Burrito here is awesome. It is HUGE so you could easily share if you are trying an appetizer also. We had the coconut shrimp appetizer, yum!!! You will not leave here hungry. Our service was great and we opted to sit outside... Why not. Enjoy!!

Not sure what happened here..... Kauai has a tv station that runs like a Travel Channel, 2 hour, looped commercial and this particular establishment paid for some air time. I happen to be in Princeville, checking out the caves and we saw Kalypso. Well alrighty then! We went in for some drinks and food. We got ONE round of drinks and left after only the appetizers. This place was total crap. The drinks were decent, food decent, but the menu was awful. The menu looked like it came out of Bennigans, or Chillis, or Long John Silvers...and WAY too overpriced. In fact, I thought it was more like a jazzed up McDonalds - that's how UN-impressed I was with the menu selection. Had the stuff been about $10 cheaper per menu item, I may think otherwise...but sorry folks, it's obvious: This place is 100% tourist trap and designed to bludgeon unsuspecting "haolies" from their hard earned cash. And from the number of haolies we saw in there, business was GOOD. We left and went across the street to a cute ice cream shop that sold grilled cheese sandwiches. MUCH better!

The most accurate review I can possible give this place is to say just two words. "Three Stars." Three stars conjures images of mediocrity, average-ocity, and an abject normalcy that is terrifying to those who aspire to be anything but regular. Unfortunate Kalypso falls right into this area. The day we went in was the first day they had been open in weeks, due to some major repairs, and perhaps that affected things a little, but Kalypso really emobdied mediocrity. Service was fine, but the server, while friendly enough, possessed the ultimate "I don't really want to be here, but I've memorized this script so well -- and boy am I going to deliver it with fake emotion!" Her wonderful description of the specials didn't sway us, and instead we selected some average entrees, and the worst beer I've ever had. (That's the fault of a local brewer, not the restaurant obviously.) Prices are pretty normal for what you'd see in other places around the island, but I can't say there's anything terribly special about it. Since it's on the north shore I imagine you'll end up with a reasonably hopping after dinner crowd on some occasions, so it's probably best for that. But if you're in the area and just looking for lunch, it shouldn't be your first stop. Maybe your second, but with a little digging I bet you could find a north shore haunt that's much more satisfying.

We're giving this two stars because the bartender was nice and provided good service, the beer was really cold, and the Mai tai was good. If it weren't for those things, it would have only one little star. The food just wasn't good...at all. We had the pork quesadilla and the fish tacos. Both were almost inedible. The rice and beans were even terrible. I don't know what else to say other than that we had to force ourselves to even eat part of it and left feeling terrible. It's in a great area, the service is good, and the menu is enticing. They simply need better food.

I give them 3 stars because they told my husband they show the UH game but did not tell him they don't show the live game. He got there and was very disappointed. He should have drove to Lihue but it was too late. He wanted to see the kick off. Upside: I had the Paniolo Spicy BBQ Burger. That was good but not spicy enough. They should use fresh jalepeno to give it more kick than picked ones. Love their keiki menu. My daughter love eating the chicken and chips.

  • Rob C.

We have eaten here several times over the last couple of years. I am a little surprised at the poor reviews. For what this restaurant is, it's quite good. Today, we had the fish burger, the mahi mahi salad, and the Keiki fish and chips. Portion size was decent, and the food was very fresh. The bun on the fish burger was soft and the fish was grilled perfectly. The salad was big with lots of greens and a spicy BBQ sauce. Good tropical iced tea too. The fish and chips were okay according to the 7 year old. He liked the fish and chips better at Keoki's. On football Sunday, be ready for a loud environment.

This place has a great happy hour; otherwise drinks and food a bit pricey! Food is good and hot, tables not very clean and sticky. Good ambiance though. Calamari was good and so were the nachos. Had a few tv's with various sports on. We go there as a stopping point in Hanalei.

My wife and I stopped in here for a couple drinks. It's got a great vibe and decor, friendly local staff and the drinks were great. I had A Kauai Tai which was delicious. It's a Mai Tai made with Kilohana Rum that's made on the island. Great drink with true local flavor.

Probably wouldn't go back. We got there 30 minutes before they started serving breakfast so we ordered some coffee and waited until 8am. Once we ordered it took 45 minutes to get our food and two groups of people who ordered after us got there food 15 minutes before ours did. Macademia nut French toast was ok, the banana pancakes were better. Really good Bloody Mary's.

We were looking for the NFL package to watch the Colt/Jaguars game (yep even in Hawaii I can't get away with no sports). Our conceirge didn't know but we got a call and they told us that Kalypso's has it (I believe it's the only bar in the North Shore that does). So we headed down to the bar. We sat at the bar and our bartender was great. They have a happy hour on some of their food and drinks. We ordered the nachos which I think were $5 during happy hour. It could feed a family of four...seriously. The nachos were ok but I can't really judge a place by nachos.

The old Zelo's now called Kalypso seems about the same. We came early as with kids it works better after a long day. We were seated quickly. It took a while to get some attention but once it rolled it rolled. We actually had them hold the entree as they brought all courses all at once. Good news! food was great! I had the fish tacos, really awesome. Wife did the huli huli chicken, great. This is a long standing Hanalei place whatever the name. Many exotic drinks... cool but no longer my thing. The short wine list could have had more choices. Good food with a fun local Friday night band.

This place is great! I'm surprised that it's received such mixed reviews. My picky, food lovin' boyfriend and I went here on our first trip to Kauai just this week. Overall, Kalypso has a great location with EXCELLENT service and worthwhile food. The cheapest time to go is during their Happy Hour, which runs everyday from 3pm-5:30pm. Our meals and drinks were more than we could finish, and our bill was about $50 total. Here is a detailed breakdown of our 2 experiences - we liked it enough to go twice: 1st Visit: On a Wednesday during their Happy Hour. It was very busy, yet there was no line to be sat and we got an ideal table outside right away. Right on the corner, great for people watching, and not too loud. The service was very fast, friendly, and professional. They were obviously experiencing a rush and the service was still above average. This was impressive. Since it was Happy Hour, I got a very decent Mai-Tai for $5. The portions are BIG on appetizers and meals. You can come hungry and still skip the appetizer, or do it big and bring home leftovers. We shared the calamari which was warm - not hot - and in a non-traditional fish stick form, but filling and yummy nevertheless. For my entree, I ordered the fish tacos, which I loved even when reheated the next day. The boyfriend got the teriyaki burger which he could hardly make a dent in - so big. He was very happy and insisted on an extra generous tip, which he doesn't throw around often. 2nd Visit: Also Happy Hour, now on a Monday. It was less busy and we got to sit outside toward the back, which offered some sense of privacy. We were promptly served by another young but friendly and capable waitress. My boyfriend got the fish tacos he was jealous of before, but said the fish was dry and that they were making up for it with the other ingredients. That said, it was a good dish, he felt that the quality was unaffected, and I know I would order it again. I got the nachos which are thickly piled with toppings. One regret: the pork I added was very salty and too expensive - $4 when the nachos themselves were only $5 during Happy Hour. Wouldn't add pork again, and luckily it doesn't need meat anyway. It's huge and flavorful as-is. I went a little overboard and also ordered the seared ahi sashimi, which was good, standard sushi and lighter on the stomach than the other items which was nice. Although the food wasn't out-of-this-world sensational, the service made up for it and I find no reason to give anything less than a perfect rating.

The food isn't awesome, but it's not bad either. This is virtually the only place in town with a TV to watch the games, so we've been coming here for lunch all week. The bartenders are especially friendly, and they have a wide variety of drinks on the menu.

  • Bebe P.

Very disappointing. Had specialty Baja fish taco. Overcoolrd, tasteless sauce, stale tortillas, flavorless margarita with very little tequillla. Rice was over seasoned, undercooked and old. Black beans from a can, stiff with cheese holding it to the plate. Would not return.

Didn't have high expectations upon entering the restaurant. Just wanted to grab a quick bite before our adventures for the day. We ordered the coconut breaded shrimp. There was a nice crunch to it and it came with sweet chilli sauce for dipping. We also split a normal burger which came with an onion ring. The burger tasted just like any typical burger. At least they didn't overcook it. Restaurant was very empty. The only people occupying the tables were the ones by the open window. Birds were constantly flying in and walking around and underneath our table. The staff wasn't too alert when we were trying to get their attention. We felt a little neglected.

  • Michael G.

Strictly a bar happy hour review. A good selection of beers, lots of which get happy hour pricing, pupus are also priced well and were pretty tasty. The staff were really good on both our visits. Lots of nearby parking, which seems to be at a premium in Hanalei. We did come for dessert-to-go and got the chocolate suicide cake which received a resounding "meh" from our resident chocoholic, but as a place to hang late afternoon/evening, Kalypso is just fine.

3.5 Stars but not quite 4. However, when we decided upon Kalypso, we took a chance with 3.5 stars, and I have to say it wasn't a bad bet. Kalypso probably deserves closer to a 4 for their good service and sports bar/restaurant atmosphere without losing the tropical island feel. The food here is actually pretty good! Food: I had the tri-tip steak sandwich, and my girlfriend had the clams and mussels. Both dishes were good, and if given the choice, I would have had it again. The waffle fries were good (don't know why I read a review saying they weren't any good). Drinks: I had a Lava Flow and my girlfriend had a Mai Tai. The Mai Tai was good, but the Lava Flow was more like a melted coconut rum with coconut water and some strawberry syrup. Didn't look quite like you'd expect (floating coconut milk bits in a clear liquid). Anyway, I probably would NOT order that again. Service: Our server was very attentive and promptly took care of us as soon as we were seated. I was happy that the service at this bar and grill really does come with a genuine smile! Overall, I wouldn't venture from south shore up to north shore specifically for Kalypso alone, but on our next trip if we're in the area, we will be back here!

My family and I stopped at Kalypso's for lunch and we were very happy we did. The service was excellent, the beer cold, the Mai Tai's were made to the expectation of our wive's and the food was delicious. We had the Paniolo Spicy BBQ Burger (not that spicy), Fish & Chips, Baja Style Fish Tacos, Calamari and Mango BBQ and Spicy Wings. The food was very good with some changes, it could be excellent. The Paniolo Burger comes with very weak jalapeños. If you are going to call it a spicy burger, them the jalapeños should have a bite to them. We loved the Mango BBQ wings, not enthusiastic about the spicy wings. You should offer a dozen of each separately, not a 50/50 mix. The Calamari was very good too. We arrived a little before happy hour and then eased into it. The server made sure to alert us when the newly ordered drinks would be considered part of Happy Hour. Nice touch! Tonight, we are going back for dinner. A second visit within two days. Family friendly and customer friendly. Highly recommended for your enjoyment.

Revisiting and lowering the score. After checking my credit card bill I found that they increased tip amount. I consider it unacceptable for any establishment. We got some Mexican style appetizers and fish tacos It was OK but nothing special. waiters are nice and accommodating. Drinks are super sweet to my taste. The only real black spot was talking to the person who introduce herself as a manager and her name is Michaela. She was rude and unaccommodating. Get rid of her!

This became our regular restaurant in Kauai. We frequented Kalypso for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks. The Eggs Florentine with the taro cake (like a potato pancake, but made with taro instead) was a favorite for breakfast. The burgers were excellent and always cooked to the correct temperature. The mussels were huge and delicious. We all liked the spinach and artichoke dip as well. Great bar food. Everything tasted very fresh and they use a lot of local ingredients. Try the Pele's Revenge shot. It tastes like a Tootsie Roll! Excellent Happy Hour specials. The bartenders and waitstaff were all very friendly and remembered us from night to night. The outdoor patio gets a fantastic breeze and is a great place for a late lunch before heading over to swim at Hanalei Bay. It's not exactly cheap, but nothing in Kauai really is. I found the food on the island to generally be overpriced and underwhelming, but Kalypso was one of the few places I truly enjoyed.

Had dinner here twice during a week's stay at Hanalei. Excellent fish tacos, which is why we came back the second time. Also had the crab quessadia which was above average as well. And Deschutes brewerey IPA -- an EXCELLENT beer. First night they tapped a new keg so it was super but I think it may have been the same keg when we came back 4 days later because it tasted pretty flat (hence 4 not 5 stars). Wait-help was friendly and attentive, and service was very fast.

My husband and I stopped here on a whim for lunch. I ordered the club while he ordered the BBQ burger. I had a Kauai Mai Tai (made with local rum). I was very pleasantly surprised. Both our meals were very good and the service was prompt and very courteous.

Came here for brunch and were seated on a little patio with a great breeze. We ordered the Crab Omelette and the Blackened Mahi Benedict. Both portions were big and the crab omettle had plenty of crab. The blackened mahi was interesting and flavorful. I would have like the potatoes to have a little more flavor (maybe some onions or peppers added to it). I saw other people eating heaps of nachos and ordering lots of fruity drinks, but since we were about to head to a hike, we opted to hydrate with water. The service was good and consistent. Overall a good experience.

Not worth the money! The fish tacos were good enough but the rice and beans with it were terrible! My friends sandwich was just ok. We both felt sick the rest of the afternoon.

  • Kid G.

The food was underwhelming. I ordered the fish tacos, nice presentation, but flavor was bland. The nacho's tortilla chips and the fish n chips were fried in old oil, had an unsavory flavor and dark patina to them. One would think you can't mess up a good ol' shot of Jameson, but it was but a wee Barbie-sized shot. Overall unimpressed, considering the $200 bill. Wish we'da passed this place by, or been clued in to the better menu items.

We have had mostly average, overpriced lunches while on Kauai and Kalypso blew us away! Prices are typical for the island: $11-$13 for a sandwich, $15 for a salad, $8-$12 for an app. The crab quesadilla was exceptional: tons of crab, the right amount of cheese, no creamy filler or greasy drips, and some peppers and olives. Great zingy sauce and salsa on the side. We're thinking of going back for another one today! Very good chowder (4 stars), delicious Puli Puli 1/2 chicken with steamed veg, white rice, fruity sauce, and excellent Cajun Mahi salad with delicious spicy BBQ sauce. We had leftovers for all 3 of us for dinner. The Lilokoi Caipirinha was delicious, and hubby loved his Pain Killer, Good service, quick food, lovely view (including Laird and Gabrielle Reece yesterday!).

Not a place you go to eat. It's a place you go to DRINK. And drink you shall: Best happy hour on the island: from 4-7pm weekdays (i think), $4 Mai Tais ( and the rest of the drink menu) made with fresh ingredients. Be prepared to walk home.

  • Samantha S.

I agree with most reviews that state this place is just OK. It is a bar with several TV's, loud music, and decent food. The service was fantastic. We had fish tacos and fish and chips. It did the job at a reasonable price.

I can only comment on the mai tais--best value in Hanalei, good and $7 or less at happy hour. Nice servers.

Two Stars for the Happy Hour All Night the night we visited for dinner (true for every Wednesdays) and for the open air atmosphere ... the food was bland and the service spotty ... there are intriguing items on the menu, but I wish they can execute better: the pasta dishes our group ordered was pretty basic, the fish tacos were bland and a little boring, and the fish in the fish and chips were ok - but come on, it's fried, so a little hard to mess up ... oh and their calamari appetizers were strips rather than rings - I'm not a fan of that ... beware of what's included in the Happy Hour special, there were a couple of drinks ordered that was not part of the special, which our server failed to mention to us ... the draft beers are served on pretty cool Kona Brewery pint glasses inscribed with the Kalypso label, which makes for a good souvenir, but then again, why would you want a reminder on how boring your food was ...

After surfing, my husband and I went for lunch. I had a mahi mahi salad that was enough for a family of 4, and so good! It had black beans, blackened fish, corn, BBQ dressing, and fresh organic greens. My husband had a club sandwhich. He loves his clubs, and gave it a 2 thumbs up. Their onion rings were phenomenal! And, the drinks were great. Good service, good food!

I have to agree with the other reviews. This place looked cool from the outside, was cool inside, the service was good, but the food... I ordered a burger, it tasted very average. The fries and rings were dripping with oil...and the margarita I was craving was thick...I ordered it "on the rocks", but whatever mix they use is not good. I wouldn't go back. Walk across the street to Bubba's and save some money and get a better burger.

We've eaten there four years in a row and always have a good experience. Our first year in Hanalei we almost didn't go because of a few bad reviews we read. We've seen people poo poo this place a bit, but have never understood why. Great for a date with the wife or dinner with the kids. The food is fresh, the drinks are tasty and the service is good. For the quality of food and atmosphere, it's one of the more reasonably priced places in Hanalei - it not the most reasonable. I always have fresh fish and have never been dissapointed. It can be a bit loud if they have a basketball play-off game on, but other than that, I love the place. Open floor plan with mini outdoor decks for the tables along one side of the building - nice breeze blowing through - it's very relaxing.

Atmosphere was fun with very open windows. Near many shops to visit while you are waiting for a table. Service was good from the hostess to the waitress. Tacos come with rice, beans, and salsa but no chips. Shrimp and fish tacos were great and had a yummy chipotle ranch drizzle. Tostada BBQ Mahi salad was amazing. Consider ordering without the tostada--Mine instantly fell apart and made it difficult to eat.

Fun casual place. Food was very good. Close to the beach. Full bar with local and domestic beer. Shopping close.

Rarely do we make it out to Hanalei as we are south shore snobs, but when we do the wife insists that we stop off at Kalypso for her favorite fish and chips on the island! They have changed the fish from Ono to Mahi but she said it was still Her favorite! The batter is not too thick or too thin! Since going on my new kick where I only eat local meat I was nervous as to what I would eat but lucky me there beef is from big island!! Local enough for me! So cheeseburger it was! Seriously delicious! The fries are waffle, which isn't my thing, so I opted for onion rings and they were amazing!! Not enough sauce so be sure to ask for extra! The only reason they didn't get five stars is because my water was never refilled...

I have no idea how the food was, but I will never set foot in this establishment again--not that I think it will be there much longer anyway. We are a family of 5, parents and 3 teenagers. We dine out often and go to restaurants ranging from taco trucks to gourmet dining. We had spent a magical day hiking and snorkeling at Ke'e beach. We were famished and looking forward to good food. We took a chance on Kalypso based on the reviews we had read. We felt fortunate to get a table right away at 6 on a Thurs. evening. We were given menus that were falling apart. The bindings were broken, they were dirty and the pages didn't stay in--clue #1. We ordered beers on tap for Mom and Dad and virgin mango coladas for the kids. The beers came out fairly warm--clue #2. When we placed our orders, our vegetarian daughter was told that they were out of veggie burgers, so she ordered the ratatouille sandwich with onion rings. A few minutes later the waitress returned to tell my daughter that they were also out of onion rings. We were beginning to wonder why they were out of two things, and why didn't they let us know what they were out of before we looked over the menu. The final straw happened a few minutes later when the ditzy waitress approached our table giggling and holding a menu. They were out of baguettes and refused to make the sandwich on any other bread because it would be soggy. Did I mention that the restaurant is located across the parking lot from a grocery store? Why didn't they go buy a baguette? We were beginning to get worried about a restaurant that was out of so many items so early in the evening. Were they perhaps on a cash only basis with suppliers? We asked to see the manager, and a waiter approached our table and began to lecture us about being difficult. I tried to tell him that this was the third item my daughter had ordered that was out. He raised his voice and lectured us all about the "restaurant business" (both my husband and I waited tables to get through college). He was beyond rude and told us we could leave if we didn't like it, so we did. For the record, Hanalei Pizza was delicious, and I saw the cook run to the grocery store when they were out of garlic. They never made it the customer's problem. Ugh, it was just so frustrating, because Kalypso is in a great location. What a waste.

I iked this place better when it was Zelos .. and I didnt like it much then! Uninspired food, totally kickback (as in none at all) service. The wait staff is more interested in chatting with each other than actually helping you. Wont go back again .. overpriced and lacking taste and quality.

Great atmosphere, good food, service ok. The happy hour was nice . :-) Mai Tai, Your Tai, Everybody Tai! Would not recommend the chicken wings. Would definitely highly recommend the poke lettuce wraps! Anything fish here was very good. Veggy burger was awesome. Seafood pasta, would get again (because pasta is such a Hawaiian dish :-) Atmosphere is so comfy and inviting it could be an easy go-to spot any time.

My wife and I came here for a quick lunch on our honeymoon, and we got just what we expected. We had the coconut shrimp to start which was a solid start. Our main entrees were most consistent with high quality bar food. I had the fish tacos which were solid, and my wife had a burger. The waffles fries had some good seasoning and overall we felt like we had a substantial amount of food, but we wouldn't have been confused for gourmet dining which as I said isn't something that we were expecting. The tap list was average for the island with the majority of the taps being of the Kona variety, and they looked as though they had some decent mixed drinks they made as well. As with most things on Hawaii the price is always a little higher here, but for the island I thought it was a fair value. The bar itself has a nice setting with some tv's you can watch some sports on, and being right next to the main drag in Hanalei you can do some people watching from the patio area. Overall, I would classify this as a great spot to grab a quick lunch or dinner with some drinks.

We came here on our honeymoon on the recommendation of a friend, and it even exceeded our expectations. The nachos were the half size happy hour portion but with the pork added were still plenty big for an entree. I'm so stuffed right now. My wife got the Huli Huli chicken and it was phenomenal. Very tender and juicy chicken with a tangy sweet mango teriyaki sauce. To drink she got the cinnamon pineapple margarita (not a happy hour item) and I had the Kauai Tai (Mai Tai made with their local rum). We guzzled both like we just escaped the desert and that was all there was to drink.

We were staying up in Princeville, and Hanalei is the closest town with a variety of restaurants and shops. We seriously had no clue where to go since it was just a little after 1 pm, and it looked like the majority of tourists had already eaten or were just finishing up. Kalypso sits on a corner and has great views from the balcony tables. Luckily we got one. It's always great when the hostess flashes a huge smile says hello and asks how many. We didn't have to wait long. I'm not sure if some people understand what happens when you visit Kauai. The pace is slower...so much so you kinda forget what day it is. Our friendly server took our drink and appetizer order which gave us time to look over the menu. Good mai tais! The coconut shrimp were crispy, maybe a little too crispy but good. I ordered the club sandwich which came out on ciabatta roll, that I asked not to be toasted, and it came with sprouts which was a refreshing change. The partner had the chicken pesto sandwich which was very good. both came with waffle fries! The staff we encountered were friendly and the vibe is very chill! A nice breeze blew through the restaurant. This is a great place to have a relaxing lunch and forget about whatever it is you flew away from...LOL!

Good atmosphere, good bar, good service, average food. I got the breaded fish dish. The first bite was great, but then the fish started to get really dry. Everyone else thought their food was average. Not many other places to choose from so I guess without the competition, you can be average.

Fun atmosphere, great good and great service - all a few blocks from Hanalei Beach! What more could you ask for? It's also the best sports bar on the north shore. We stopped in for a drink and an appetizer just prior to the first game of the NFL season and there were plenty of TV's. We also secured a patio table overlooking the road, which was great. We ordered the lettuce wrap appetizer with calamari and Ono poke - yum! We would definitely go back the next time we're on the north shore!

After a long, rocky, hot hike , kalypso is the remedy for your fatigued self is looking for! The Kahlúa pork nachos are THE BEST item on the menu. The pork has all the right seasons, it's so cheesy and crunchy. Just heaven. Happy hour makes those nachos all that much sweeter. With kona brews on tap how can you go wrong here? Our server was great and gave us some recommendations ( the pork nachos....thanks!) if your are ever in town drop by and get a little somethin' somethin'.

Visited after the beach. Very nice set up inside. Comfortable, laid-back dining with a very nice bar area. Extensive drink menu with many Hawaiian classics. I ordered a delicious spicy margarita. The food menu was well balanced between appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrées. I chose the chicken pesto sandwich. It was so delicious. For about $1.50 extra I ordered awesome waffle fries. Yummy! Service was very friendly and overall, the cleanliness was superb. Many locals recommended this place to me, I'm glad I went.

Food was great. They have a few gluten free choices. The pork nachos were giant (plenty for 2) and delicious, 5 stars for me. My husband had the calamari and gave it 3 stars. Service was great.

Everytime we come to Kauai we managed to stop at Kalypso for a meal. Today my friends and I shared the calamari which was light and fresh and delicious. Next we decided on potato skins which were above average with loads of cheese and bacon and sour cream. Caesar salad was fresh tasting, crisp lettuce and croutons were delicious. I had a Mai Tai which gave me a slight buzz ( hard to do) so I was satisfied with the amount of alcohol. Our server was great. He was right on when we needed him and brought our food out while it was hot. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was the Fish and Chips. The Fish was heavily battered in a very bland batter. I wished they had used the same light batter as the Calamari. Overall, I think its a fun restaurant to visit, the prices aren't crazy outrageous and the service is always good.

"Feeling a Little Crabby?" Came in around noon last week for a beer and some food. Had just returned from the North Shore and wanted to eat before hitting the beach in Poipu. Sat at the bar and ordered a Firerock IPA and had (and I quote): "FRESH CATCH and CRAB WRAP--beer-battered fresh catch-of-the-day with our own crab mixture in a sun-dried tomato chili wrap. Served with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, roasted red pepper, and finished with our chipotle ranch." I ordered waffle fries with it and enjoyed it. The bartender was nice and attentive and the place had a decent vibe.

Breakfast and dinner were both amazing! We had the crab omelet, mac nut bananas foster pancakes, and acai bowl for breakfast. All were incredible, but he would say the omelet won! For dinner, coconut shrimp, crab quesadilla, and shrimp tacos. Again, ALL were great!!

A slightly worse version of tgi fridays. slightly hawaiian version of bar food (ex. greasy nachos can add Kalua pork for $5 more). The Hawaiian drinks are all from syrupy mixes - unless you enjoy lot's of high fructose corn syrup stick to beer. Bonus is beer is only $3.5 during happy hour (ends at 5:30), but for an extra $0.50 I'd rather drink at Tahitti Nui.

I'm a pretty harsh reviewer when it comes to food and drinks, but I was honestly pleasantly surprised after my visit. We stopped in for happy hour drinks and to just hang out while the storm passed. I got a kentucky mule which was actually really good (they are always hit and miss on balance). While we sat at the bar, they were also meticulously tasting, altering and balancing out their colada mix-- which is an awesome attention to detail and that showed when they were making all of their drinks. Super impressive for a random place not screaming craft cocktails or a cocktail emphasis in general. The girls tank tops are sewpppper low cut and so I literally could not stop staring at Bewbs. Also, randomly got the happy hour fried artichoke hearts... And they were great

Not 5 because I'm from WINE COUNTRYso I'm a snob. Breakfast is best if you have a hangover because it's GREASY and you can get hard alcohol. I didn't have a hangover so my omelet which was drowning with oil was too much. My hubby had the loco Moco and loved it. Coffee was good. We came back after the beach and dinner was much better but the service was slow. The poki bowl and happy hour chardonnay were great and the club sandwich was good too. It was all good till desert, we ordered, it wasn't available, we ordered again, not available because of a freezer problem, we gave up and asked for the bill....5-10 minutes or more passed between each so it was about 40 minutes to just get out of there. The gal was nice about it but didn't seem to realize how ridiculous this seemed. I'll come back because that poki bowl was good and everyone was pleasant.

Came here around 2:30. We were sat in a tiny little corner. Kind of uncomfortable. The burger was alright. Nachos were nachos.. Plain. I waited a good 15 min for my drink which was good (jalapeño margarita). I'm giving two stars for the server being kind and the drink.

I'm writting this detailed review to inform the public of the extreme health hazard this place represents. I became deathly ill by this place. To the point of having to go to the ED. And the ED contacted the health department because another friend of mine also got sick from eating the same dish. The health department went out the next day and cited the place for not properly handling the food we ate they found evidence to support that but the person in charge assured me (no situation was found) meanwhile I have a copy of the citation in my desk... The general service and food was disgusting on top of being unsanitary. Words cannot describe how this one stop ruined my trip. The person in charge stated traveling can make you sick LOL I have been all over the world and never had this problem. However I am WARNING the general public about the safety hazard this place represents. Do NOT eat here you WILL get sick. When spying in the back when I came back to complain after being in the ED for 24 hours NO ONE was wearing gloves in the kitchen it was HOT and SO unsanitary the bathrooms were disgusting. I assure you that I have NEVER been so critical Sick in my life as this place did to me. Stay far away....

First time here. Came in on a Wednesday evening. Found out they have happy Hour all night on Wednesday. Very happy with the experience. We had Teea as our waitress. She was very quick, sweet and attentive. The food was equally quick as well as delicious. We got the happy hour nachos much bigger than expected) and added chicken, also had the poke bowl-amazing. Overall great experience here, would recommend- definitely on a Wednesday night.

I love this place. The Happy Hour is great! Kona beers on draft and coconut shrimp/calamari! Always easy to meet people at the bar. The menu food is good, especially the burgers.

I ordered their premier Mai Tai, and the Ahi Poke bowl. The Mai Tai was watered down fruit juice, seriously the worst I've had. The Ahi Poke bowl consisted of massive cubes of fish drowned in a bowl of mayonnaise. A lot of mayonnaise. Inedible. Avoid at all costs.

poor service not very accommodating 50% off bottle wine night.. I pick 3 Cabernet red wines and non are available by bottles $30-$40 price range at 6:30 instead the waiter bring a $49 Merlot I aske if I could just have a glass of that and he says NO it's by the bottle only!! I don't want a bottle of that and you don't have 3 of the Cabs on your menu... food wasn't very good either over cooked shrimp, and dry fish tacos only thing decent was the potato skins and Caesar salad we won't return, and we vacation to Kauai 2 times a year. Hanalei Dolphin is much better fresh fish and great service

Great kono draft beer on tap. Went down well after a swim in the ocean. Just loved the fish tacos!! Very good portions of rice and beans on the side too. I don't care what other reviewers say, but this does the job. Nice atmosphere too

  • Jeffrey W.

Good service, average food. I got a teri burger. I ordered it medium rare and it came closer to well done. The meat was not very good and the sandwich in general was boring. The best thing about this place is their happy hour and their views. Good prices for booze and a few food items during happy hour. Don't know if their happy hour food is any good though.

  • Kenneth H.

Came here for dinner after a long search on yelp for something that wasn't too expensive and was still kid friendly. The atmosphere here is very laid back and very typical Hawaii. The service here was very friendly from the time we walked in to the time we left. The taro burger was better than I expected b/c it was vegetarian. The clams and mussels were good and pretty typical being cooked in a white wine sauce. I think everything else was just average. The spicy bbq burger was cooked more than what the waitress recommended and had too much sauce. The wings weren't bad but nothing special about them. The fish tacos were also cooked more than I liked and I thought it could have been better with a salsa than a ranch dressing.

  • Thomas F.

The only reason they get three is because the beer is really cold and it's a good place to sit at the bar and have a beer and watch sports. Their food is mediocre at best. Seems to me it's basically all frozen "bar and grill" food. I've been there plenty of times and have been underwhelmed by this tourist trap. If you're going for football, cold beer, and nachos then you should be alright but I would never sit down and order any of their entrees.

I really liked this place. I was kind of worried going there after seeing it was affiliated with Duke's, but my fear was put to rest. The servers were nicer, more genuine. The food was better. I had the slider sampler, I should have just stuck with the pulled pork sandwich. It was my favorite of the three. The burger sampler was a bit overdone and the crab cake one was a tad mushy. I tried my husband's hamburger and it was great! So juicy and had a delicious piece of bacon. Yeah, I got entree envy. That's ok. There were some crispy frieda to go with it and they had a really good red beer. I felt this was a really relaxed atmosphere and enjoyed eating here. I'd go here again.

Stopped here unexpectedly for breakfast and I was a bit skeptical because of the ratings and comments. However, the service was friendly and for the price we got huge plates! I got a crab omelet and my boyfriend ordered their loco moco! Both were delicious! The gravy on the loco moco is really good and it is big enough to feed 2 people! The crab omelet was good but it would be better if they left out the olives and drizzled it with hollandaise sauce! Overall it was good and I would reccomend it for breakfast if you are in the area!

We've eaten here many times in the past snd loved it. However, our visit a few days ago was very disappointing. We ordered the fried calamari and poke lettuce wrap and the calamari wad so overcooked it was inedible. The fish tacos were equally disappointing as was the cosmo. Needless yo say it is off our list.

Kalypso's sits at the trail head between Hanalei center and the road down to the bay with two miles of great beaches. My girlfriend and I dropped in one night after a trip down to the beach for a swim. The wrap around porch was inviting. You can sit, eat, drink, and watch the world go by. It was early in our vacation. Of the restaurants we visited, Kalypsos had one of the highest standards of service. Their staff was friendly, quick, efficient and cheerful. They took care of us on a busy Saturday night as well as any place I've been. Well done, guys. My girlfriend tried the fish sandwich, and it was fresh and nicely cooked. The fish was cooked through but not dry, as so often happens. Their waffle fries were probably not house made, but still quite good. A nice casual, but delicious meal. My Ahi Poke salad was really delicious. Mildly seared and tossed with a sesame oil and balsamic vinaigrette, field greens and taro chips. It was a refreshing, light dinner. You can find all sorts of fish battered and fried within an inch of its existence up and down the drag, a clean fresh salad with a nice piece of fish was a welcome break. The bar features several Kona brewery selections on tap. The Kona IPA was cold and bitter and wonderful after a hot afternoon at the beach. Tip of the hat to Kalypso's for serving the local craft brews. Overall, a great experience.

Out of all the restaurants on the island, this one has always been a "must" the four times I've been to Kauai. The reason you ask? The infamous Grasshopper Pie. My sister was so excited to have this heavenly mint oreo slice that we stopped just for dessert. Unfortunately, it looks like they changed the recipe. What was once a ooey gooey mint mash up is now solely a solid slice of mint oreo icecream. Delicious nonetheless, but not what we've been dreaming of.

Dinned their a couple times during our recent trip to Princeville. First night, wedding party of 20 plus, the staff was excellent and very friendly, food was good, and served very quickly. 2nd night, sat out on the deck, would definitely recommend the Mia Tia, very friendly service once again.

The beer's cold. The restaurant is hot (temperature speaking). It's the only option for a sports bar around, so plus in that department. We watched the Women's World Cup final there and were never without beer - and they had the sound on for the match. You should stop in here at least once while you're in town, but you're not going to write home about it.

Stopped here for Happy Hour and enjoyed some Kahlua Pork Nachos and Mai Tai's. The place is really cute and has a great local vibe but the pork on the nachos was a little dry so I'm taking off a star. The Mai Tai's were strong and delicious, and the service was great.

I had a macadamia nut pesto chicken sandwich with waffle fries. The sandwich was moist and flavorful and the waffle fries were cooked to golden perfection and well seasoned.

Well. Drinks were mediocre at best. I upgraded to the top shelf Mai tai and it just got stronger not better. Fish and chips, fish was good if you took the batter off. Batter was soggy and without substance or crunch. The fried artichoke app was good. So you they can deep fry. Service was fine. It was really the only choice tonight since Hanalei is sleepy, unless we wanted a burger, but I think we would've been happier.

I have never felt compelled to write a review whether positive or negative. For anyone wanting to eat at Kalypso's the service is horrible and the food is comparable to a hospital cafeteria. The only reason we ate here was because of a great commercial spot they had on the hotel television station. The Ahi Poke roll with soft shell crab was the only reason we visited as the commercial highlighted this dish only to learn it is sold only on Friday night. No exception to make as we requested nor was this stated on the commercial. We could have eaten anywhere expecting to pay upwards of $200. I'm sad my wife dressed up thinking this was going to be a great place to eat seeing how acclaimed the false advertising represented. The restaurant is more of a bar and food is probably better than serving popcorn or nuts. As you can see I am very upset as is my stomach. Beware of this place before entering at your own risk.

Fast service and best value on island! We enjoyed $5 happy hour Piña Coladas (woo hoo) and a generous plate of kaluha pork nachos. Great food, service, and overall experience! Bar-atmosphere may deter some looking for a more sophisticated experience.

This ended up being our favorite bar serving our favorite mai tai on the entirety of Kauai! We hit happy hour 3-5:30 several times coming back from beach days at Hanalei Bay. They offered $3 corona, $3.50 kona beer, & $6 tropical cocktail. They also hand a handful of appetizers at reduced prices $6-8. We stuck mainly with the cocktails, all served in the tall, curvy tulip glasses. I really liked the mai tai, served in the perfectly striated form with a nice float of dark rum on top of fresh tropical juices, & the mango daiquiri was tasty as well. We tried the coconut shrimp, and they were also some of the best we had on the island, served with a tangy dipping sauce and totally coated in rich, crunchy coconut flakes. We sat on the open patio areas each time we came, so we had nice views of the community. Perfect place to relax after long beach days! There are also plenty of TVs so if you are a sports fan, they air all the big events.

My adult daughter and I had lunch at the bar here before our zipline adventure, on a Tuesday. For some reason their tap water tasted really weird, almost undrinkable. I had their jalapeno margarita which was tasty and not too sweet, and my daughter had a local brew on tap. I enjoyed the vegetarian taro burger (added blue cheese which they melted on nicely). Yes, it was mushy, as another reviewer mentioned, but I've found most veggie type burgers are. I thought it tasted pretty awesome especially with all the avocado they had with it. My daughter had the mussels and clams and really enjoyed those as well. Service at the bar was also good. Only real complaint was the water!

Go in with low expectations and you will be amazed with this casual, sports bar, Key West / Jimmy Buffet quality restaurant. Menu is hit or miss for sure and it's crowded all day long with very pale white patrons. Consistently mediocre to good at a reasonable value - which is solid for the Hanalei food and beverage options. Honestly, this is what visitors want in a restaurant when coming to Kauai. It seems that anything more is overshooting the cruise boat tourist, stuffed potato skins demographic. Customers seated by the window always seem to be happy so what's not to love?? Mounds of fried food appetizers, cream sauce pasta, unlimited Bud Lite with TV's on every wall. Oh and . . . BACON!! 'Merica!!!

Service was fine, but the food was really underwhelming. Good beer prices. Potato skins were dry and just didn't taste fresh. The fish tacos were okay but lacking flavor. Overpriced for the quality in my opinion. There are other better options in this area, but this place always had people at it when we drove by.

Pretty syrupy drinks. We tried the chili Margarita and couldn't taste the chilli. The fish tacos were boring and the fish wasn't seasoned. It does have a great view though.

What a great experience! Started with the Calamari Appetizer and local draft craft beers, the Seafood Pasta was packed with seafood, prawns, mussels, clams, calamari and the seafood stuffed Raviolis were fantastic. We finished the night sharing the Mud Pie which was a quarter slice of a whole pie. We were so satisfied with the beautifully prepared good and pleasant wait staff that Kalypso has become our favorite place to dine on the Northshore if not the whole island of Kauai. Magical night, We highly recommend stopping in and experiencing the spirit of Aloha at Kalypso. Mahalo nui!

I think 3 stars is more than generous and the only redeeming qualities of this place is that we were seated quickly. We were greeted by incredibly young and snotty girl that seemed overly annoyed that she had to work for a living. Talking to her was the equivalent of having a brief conversation with sheet rock. We got a table rather quickly for a Friday which was great but the eye rolling by the hostess on the way to the dampened our enthusiasm quickly. We were then greeted by yet another self-entitled Hawaiian Local gal that was irritated to be serving another table of tourists, which is ironic considering that tourism in this overly priced Bubba Gump knock off of a restaurant was paying her salary. (Not to mention the more than 20% sympathy tip I gave her just for breathing.) The food wasn't shabby, but not spectacular for the price. The Coconut Shrimp was tasty but a little over cooked. In the end the staff was rude and obviously annoyed to be employed in customer service and the food was mediocre. You'd be better off wasting time at a chain restaurant like Bubba Gumps if you want that "island" feel and ambiance.

After a nice swim at queen's bath, wanted to try this place since it's Sunday and football is on. Happy hour prices were reasonable. We had couple of beers, very refreshing after a hot day, nachos and sampler platter. The deep fried calamari was very tender! Typical sports bar. Main thing kids were happy after they cleaned out their plate, each ordering hamburger with fries and their lava flow. We're on vacation, might as well drink what the tourist drink lol.

Best Mai Tai we had on the island. The food was good and the chicken wings were very good.

We came here for my boyfriend's birthday dinner and it really deserves 2.5 stars, not 3 but that's not an option so I rounded up. The hostess who "greeted" us ...she was young and apparently new (one of the other staffers frustratingly sighed this information to me) but she was terrible. Some people just aren't made for the service industry and she was one. When I gave her my middle name for the reservation (because it's distinctive), she rudely made a face at me and said "Huh!?" That type of behavior continued throughout the rest of our (and others) interactions with her. Thankfully, we were seated after a short wait and our waitress was much better. We ordered the coconut shrimp as an appetizer to share and we all enjoyed it. My boyfriend and I opted to get appetizers for our main course as we found those choices far more appealing than the entrees; he got the bbq nachos and I got the clams & mussels ....although they were out of clams so it was only mussels (interestingly, they charge you more if you opt to get all clams but didn't charge me less even though I had only mussels). The nachos were decent but my mussels were awful - hardly any broth in my bowl, making the mussels were dry and tasteless. I would have told the waitress but she never asked how things were...apparently they don't care? My brother got the fish tacos and while he didn't complain, he didn't praise them at all either. The restaurant did bring our table a complimentary dessert of my boyfriend's choice for his birthday...although it was limited to 2 choices because the ovens had been turned off...even though there were several tables still in the restaurant. In the future, I might come back for a cocktail and the coconut shrimp, but not much else.

Decent place for a quick drink. The waiter tries to jip you by asking if you want to try a local rum in your drink instead and makes it sound like it's no big deal to switch, but then ends up charging you for that. He tried to do that twice. So if he offers anything, make sure to ask if there's an extra charge! The drinks overall were decent. The coconut shrimp app was very good. But the fish tacos were also okay

I would give no stars if I could. I returned my overcooked hard chicken and received another just as hard to accompany rubber pasta. Frozen into the microwave is not worth $20. While it was removed from the check on my request, we were also surprised to find our drinks were $11 each. No prices on the menu for drinks but even on Kauai that's high. No view, loud music, and overworked servers. The famous ratatouille was also made with frozen vegetables or at least not fresh. The manager was also our server and was nice but she is not the kitchen. Can you say no return?

I spent 8 days on Kauai and this was my favorite meal of the trip. We arrived at 3, right at the start of happy hour...serendipitous! ;) Brews from Kona Brewing only $3.50! So far so good. Got a Fire Rock Ale which was awesome. Date got a mai tai, which he liked ($6 happy hour price). We were served by a young guy (maybe in high school) who was awesome and attentive in a effortless unobtrusive way. And the food...yum! I ordered the Taro burger, cause where else could I ever order a Taro burger? (plus I'm vegetarian). It was unusual and tasty and had a lot of veg topped with a generous piece of avocado. I loved it and would order it again in a heartbeat. The waffle fries were awesome too. Date liked his food as well (some sort of meat burrito). Nice ambience. It was a Sunday, so there was a lot of football on, which would normally annoy me a bit, but we were enjoying the fresh air at our lovely outdoor table and I hardly minded at all. It's hard to find good veg food on the island, so I thoroughly appreciated this healthy and tasty meal.

just left Kalypso on their Wednesday nite all night happy hour. No house cab, had to get the $9 glass, Ordered the sampler plate - wings, calamari, artichoke hearts, and coconut shrimp. Might have been the worst pupu plate ever. The 3 chicken wings looked like they came from the deli section of the local Foodland. Small, no sauce, overcooked. The 3 coco shrimp looked like Mrs. Pauls only not as good. Also overcooked. Calamari wa so-so, good tai chili sauce. My wife said the artichoke hearts were good. All this for $13.95. We typically have good experience with Kalypso, but this was bad. Hope the owners read this.

Three visits in one week and here's what's consistent: Slow, inattentive service. Bland food. Overpriced, watered down drinks. On our last visit (and I do mean LAST visit), we were told there was a 15 minute wait despite there being no one else waiting and three open tables. No thanks. We left. P. S. Waits wouldn't be so long if you didn't let people--who aren't eating or drinking--camp out at tables and watch the games. P.P.S. The Kaua'i blue book review of this place is spot on.

Terrible service!!!!! My husband and I ate at Kalypso last week and experienced some of the worst service. Our waiter didn't even acknowledge our presence for the first 15 minutes and we even missed their busy time during lunch hour. Once we got our food (mediocre at best) which was not delivered by our waiter but another server, we were handed the check by our server. He did not ask if we needed anything else. I wouldn't recommend coming here. You can find better food and service elsewhere.

The cold beer is the real reason to come here. We came here for the Wednesday night Happy Hour, and ended up spending $85 for two. I admit we didn't read the happy hour menu carefully enough (partially because our beginner waiter removed it after taking our initial drink order), and we ended up ordering the special margaritas that were full price instead of house margaritas. Even as house specials, they weren't good and lacked flavor and probably tequila. The calamari and coconut shrimp were good, not great. At normal prices I would have felt ripped off, but happy hour you're paying about $1/morsel. Also went for the wings and nachos with Kalua pork since the first two items weren't filling enough after a day of sun and snorkeling. The wings were good- again at happy hour prices- but the nachos lacked flavor despite all the ingredients. In summary, if you're going to order beer specials and watch sports on the many TVs- you're good. I would head somewhere else if you want to experience the good food in Hanalei.

All in all a consistently middle of the road experience. Don't prepare to be impressed, but neither should it offend. Pretty good food, I've had some tasty things but mostly mediocre fare. The bar scene is nice here, great service and a nice long row of seats. Nice mixed drinks if you're into those. Truthfully I do keep coming back, not because it's good, but because it's one of the only things in Hanalei. If you want better but pricier head to Baracuda or Bouchons. If you want worse for the same price, head over to Tiki. They're all about 500 feet away.

Had a great meal with the family. The mahi mahi salad was excellent, the BBQ sauce on it was very tasty without overpowering the fish and the variety of the veg in the salad was fun. The drinks were great (I had 2 of the tantrums, the boyfriend had the tropical itch and the painkiller, my mom had the wahine and some kind of mango piña colada) The appetizer sampler was the only thing keeping this experience from being a 5 out of 5. each of the individual items were fine but it was just a whole lotta fried food on a plate with no real presentation. The weakest link in an overall great experience. Great service

My wife and I went to lunch at Kalypso. We both had the fish tacos. The catch of the day was Mahi Mahi. Unfortunately, the catch of the day was caught last week. I could smell the Mahi Mahi as the server neared my table and sure enough, it was really fishy. I should have sent it back, this is the first time I have ever had grossly old fish served to me in Hawaii, and I come here twice a year. I won't be back.

Good cold beer. We got there a little before 5:30. Happy hour was still available. I had a local brew that was very good. Wifey had a pina colada that was just ok. We ordered the veggie burger and something they called a tostada salad with mahi mahi. Both were not very good. The taro patty was mushy. And purple. The salad was bitter and off tasting. The service was marginal. We noticed a lot of locals drinking beer and eating nachos. They looked happy. We were not.

I don't like wasting time writing reviews but I felt obligated to warn people about this place. The 2 stars are for the cold beer. Do not order food from here if you are hungry. I still can't get the taste out of my mouth. I shouldn't have expected much for bar food so I partially blame myself. Our server, brunette, taller girl didn't seem like she gave two sh!ts because it being in a prime location I'm sure they are never hurting for business. Dumpy place in a convenient location. Pop In for a quick cold one but don't waste more time than that. "Happy hour" prices were kind of a joke too. I basically paid a business almost 40 dollars to make me feel bad lol. Not sure but I'm pretty sure that's not how it's supposed to work. Side note the bus boy (taller white) and shorter with short dark hair food runner girl or busser or even server I don't know but she seemed more attentive to our table....they did a great job.

I went here begrudgingly with my Midwestern friends who only enjoy chain restaurants it seems. Ugh. Anyway, my hipsterness about food will cease...now. Honestly, it was just bar food. Kalua pork nachos were fine. I enjoyed my kalua pork green chile quesadilla as well. Mai tais were WAY too sugary but whatever. The bad rating here is to echo the sentiments of past reviewers: CHECK YOUR BILL PEOPLE. They way overcharged us. Like, tried to charge us $200 for a $150 bill. Couldn't believe it. I was kind of tipsy leaving but I was coherent enough to argue it and I threatened to leave without paying until they fixed it. I couldn't believe my eyes. This is definitely NOT an isolated problem here.

Came here for dinner, waited for what seemed like forever to be seated. The food was alright, most of it seemed like we could find it in the frozen food aisle. We did however enjoy our drinks. Our server was also very nice and accommodating and apologized for the wait.

I liked it. We went there twice . . . once for cocktails and pupus and another time for dinner with our two teen travelers (son and nephew). I think the food is pretty good and the drinks are not bad either. The service was really good and attentive and the prices are not too bad considering its tourist central. There seemed to be a fair amount of locals in attendance, especially at the bar. It's a cool place with a good vide and nice energy. The chicken wings were a bit dry but the other pupus were pretty good especially the coconut shrimp and friend artichokes. I recommend it.

Had a decent lunch but it was a large group and the waitress added an 18% tip, which was their policy. We of course didn't notice and added another 20% on top. When we realized that the bill was too high and asked, she said it was a small additional amount added (which it wasn't) and that she had already closed out the tab. It was really frustrating to get taken like that. If she had been cool, we would have told her to keep the extra, but it was handled really poorly. Just for your future reference!

My favorite part of our meal was the calamari. It was so fresh and almost sweet tasting. The portions were large; served hot dog style not onion ring style. It was delicious. Everyone in our group said it was the best calamari they'd ever had. The nachos and seafood burrito were ok, nothing to write home about but drinks were good. A fun atmosphere after a day of north shore touring. I'd definitely go back

The bartender ignored us after making eye contact several times and it took several minutes to get a drink order. The bar top was sticky and she didn't clean it, plus the menus were sticky and dirty. The bartender (I think her name was Sarah) didn't know how to make the drink the guy next to us ordered...who doesn't know how to make a kamikaze?! My husband and I wanted to peruse the menu while having a cocktail and got to talking with the guy next to us...the bartender walked up to me after about 10 minutes and said rudely "are you ordering food or not?! "; I stated "I guess not", then she grabbed the menu, slung it to the wall at the back of the bar and stomped off. It was shocking and weird. If this woman is a representative of the Kalypso, then it's just sad. Not worth even darkening the door again. Run people! This place is awful!

Visited this place the last time I was on Kauai which was back in 2009. I am glad to see that it is still up and running:) I was with a group of friends and were driving around Hanalei looking for a place to eat and came across this place. Walked in and was greeted by the hostess and seated immediately. Looked over the menu and the coconut shrimp caught my eye. Placed my order and when it arrived...I WAS IN HEAVEN. The coconut shrimp was rolled in REAL coconut shavings. I fell in love. So much in love that I returned to this place 2 other times while on my vacation back in 2009. I am so excited to be returning to Kauai in about a week. This place is on my list of places that I need to return. I am looking forward to their coconut shrimp. I also work for a Hotel in Waikiki and always recommend this place to Guests that will be visiting Kauai :)

I had the chicken breast sandwich and waffle fries which was EXCELLENT! The drinks aren't too strong. It's near the beach, but the biggest issue was the waitress. She didn't seem all that engaged with our table and refused to allow us to separate the bill as the alcohol could not be charged to our company, but food could. Then, she made a mistake with the math when we wrote down how to charge the cards.

Drinks were good but the food was rough. Wife had the taro burger and it was a soggy mess. I had the fish taco and it was dry and had too much cabbage. It's criminal to be in Hawaii and have fish that severely overlooked. I wasn't expecting much since this is basically a bar but even with that mindset we were disappointed.

We've come here a few days during our stay in Kauai for the happy hour. We sat at the bar had very cold and affordable (by Hawaii standards) draft beer ($3.50 during happy hour). We ate one of those days. I like the open air atmosphere and the food was good. Not great but definitely good to fill your belly. I thought the fried calamari was really good. Not a heavy batter or super greasy. The poke is not very good. I don't recommend it - not really seasoned well, or trimmed well. But the Nachos were yummy! Great place to come for cold beer and to chill from the day. I give it four stars for what it is: a good bar with GREAT Bartenders. Super fast with the pour! Food is more like 3 stars.

Good food, fast seating and service! Ate here twice during our stay, once for breakfast and once for dinner. A little pricey, but not as pricey as another restaurant down the street. We had the calamari appetizer and it is the thick kind, so not a big fan of it cooked that way. We did enjoy the Kalypso Stacker appetizer. I as we'll as my mom and sister in law had the sautéed shrimp pasta and it was yummy. My husband and brother both had the special which was ahi tuna with a mango salsa and veggies and they liked it. Our 15 month old enjoyed dancing to the music playing, but didn't care for his Mac n cheese too much, which I'm guessing was straight out of the box. Overall we liked it and would go back!

Yelp reviews have not been very reliable in Kauai. Good variety of specialty drinks, Mai Tai was ok, and the kalypso spiked iced tea was good. Nachos where good and the blue Burger was delish...it was lil salty but ketchup fixed it. One of the spots I would come back to.

Came in for happy hour... Mango daquiris and lime margaritas $6... Not sure what the regular price was... Coconut shrimp and calamari were delightful. Ordered two identical rounds of food and drink. 4 drinks, 4 appys for $58

3 stars for food/atmosphere 1 star for poor service and a piece of broken plate in my nachos Overall we did have a decent experience. We came for happy hour and really enjoyed the pork nachos. That was until I took a bite and crunched on something sharp and hard. It was a quarter sized piece of broken white plate! I'm incredibly thankful I didn't swallow it! When I told our young server he didn't go to the manager, he did get us a new order and apologized. We kept eating, enjoying the game on tv and the evening breeze coming in from the open deck. But I kept waiting for a manager to come apologize, but she never came. They also made us pay for the food. I guess I'm used to better service than this, things like a chunk of sharp plate in your food kinda seems like a big deal. So I set out to find the manager after we paid. I thought she'd want to be aware to make sure other pieces of this plate don't end up in other dishes. When I told her, she shrugged it off with, "oh okay, well I'm glad you aren't hurt" then turned and that was it. Maybe she knew we were tourist and didn't care much. Had this not happen, I'd be telling you to come check thins place out. But now I'm simply saying, if you do come, chew with caution.

Loved the lunch. We have been here numerous times through the years. I usually order the fish tacos but got the chicken pesto sandwich with advacado. It was awesome. The homemade roll was also very tastey and melt in your melt soft. I love good bread. Hmmm might have to break my rule of one meal at same place per Hawaii visit.

One word: DISAPPOINTING! I almost pulled a Robert Irvine & spit out my first bite. Fish tacos? More like cabbage tacos with a few pieces of dry flavorless mahi mahi. Hubby said fish & chips were good, but agreed that my meal was bland, bland & flavorless bland (microwaved rice & beans anyone?) There are far better fish/meal prions on the island (TCs in Coconut Matketplace or Kilauea Fish Market).

3.5 stars would be the right score. No reason to rip this place. Anyone with expectations beyond what they got is just plain lame. Great open air bar with super cold, tasty drafts. The food isn't great but is slightly above average for a touristy bar. Stick with fish tacos and a cold one and you'll be fine. Actually yesterday I had some special Kalua pork tacos and they were surprisingly tasty. Young staff but quick and friendly. Looking for fine dining? Not the place. Looking for a casual bar/grill you could do a lot worse.

I came in a couple times while in Hanalei. It is a standard vacation bar, an island vibe with tons of drinks and a surprisingly large menu. Breakfast here was totally standard. Dinner was good, and they easily accommodated our large group of 8 (including a baby). It is family friendly. I think it is the only sports bar in the general area, so it was a hit during football season.

Imagine all the magic of being in Kauai taken away in a single bite. I feel violated. Even the obscene amount of sauce couldn't cover up the fact that the wings were meant to be astronaut food...if you wanted the astronauts to die. So we sent them back and got the "calamari". So gnarly. If you are forced by gunpoint into this tourist trap, stick to the safety of beer.

Our party of 4 ate here several times during our stay in Hanalei. The fried artichoke hearts are absolute heaven!! The steaks, ravioli, taro burgers, and Waldorf salads were excellent, and the grasshopper pie was out-of-this-world fantastic. We loved this restaurant so much that my daughter wanted to go back every night rather than trying out all the other eateries. When we did convince her to go to another place, she compared it to Kalypso and made us go back to Kalypso the next night. The music on Friday night was a nice touch. Very upbeat friendly modern Hawaiian music that made you want to dance without disturbing your conversation.

We looked at the menu outside and saw several things we would like to try. When we made reservations for 6:30 and were seated, the menu they gave us was totally different from the one outside. When we asked Sadie our waitress, she said that was the lunch menu. And because they had such a small kitchen area they couldn't accommodate the big menu for supper. I got unsweetened tea and asked for artificial sweetener, it took her 20 minutes and I Had to ask her again for it. She was too busy talking to some other people at another table to worry about us. Won't be going back there! Sounds like the old bait and switch.

Visited this location 3 times during my vacation. Menu had a good selection for all appetites. We loved the appetizers, especially the spinach/artichoke dip, nachos, and potato skins. Everyone loved their burgers as well. Tropical blended drinks were also a must have while dining here. FYI: No reservations on Fridays.

Breakfast for four yesterday was well received. Great service, large mocha and coffee were perfect. Three had eggs, could have been warmer but generous and made right (not slimy, not burned), cubed potato sides were crispy good, French toast perfect with Mac nut and kick ass rum butter syrup! If they had REAL MAPLE SYRUP available would give 5 stars. Nice table on the deck kept us dry from the rain. Prices were average for Hawaii.

We had brekkies here on the way out to the end of the road. Got a really different (b-grade) Mai Tai to go with a basic breakfast. Nothing really special but it was solid. I'd go back in a flash, especially for some nightlife. Looks like a rockin place.

  • Alicia H.

Ok. First, let's be realistic. It's a bar with bar food. We decided to go early in the evening. We wanted to sit on the porch, have some frozen drinks, and maybe some pupus. That's exactly what we did and it was the perfect spot because Sunday football was also still going. We ordered the ahi poke over rice. It was delicious and we fought over who would get the last bite. I had a mango margarita which was great and didn't taste syrupy as some margaritas can. My husband had a Kauai tai which he enjoyed. We decided we'd stay a little longer and had the fish tacos. The fish of the day was mahi mahi. The tacos were very good with some nice rice and beans on the side. Overall, we were pleased with our dinner and our bill. Having spent over $100 on pervious dinners on Kauai, we spent less than $50 and had an equally tasty time.

Meh, the server was a straight bitch when we arrived and when she realized we were seated in her section she changed her tune fast and apologized for her behavior at our entry (she ran into to me while walking backwards and just glared at me without apologizing). The food was nothing special for the high price and the "awesome island rum mai tai" was not very good. They ask If you want sour cream or jalapeño with your fish taco like its normal but then charge you $1.00 for sour cream and $2 for jalapeño. Such a rip off to charge $2.00 for jalapeño. Overall really irritated and would not go back.

Went here to have drinks and share some pupus with friends. The minute I walked in the place I knew it was not going to be a good experience. Table and menu both sticky. Server very nice young gal. Atmosphere kitsch. Menu - ho him. Never saw a menu before that did not list the prices of all their cocktails and beers. Our server couldn't explain why. Ordered the house Mai tai - a mistake. Typical poorly made drink in a touristy restaurant-bar with a parasol in it. We decided to share calamari (I have never ever seen breaded calamari that looked like a fat 6 inch worm) and coconut deep fried shrimp (over cooked, breading on outside was almost black and no flavor whatsoever) and the worst thing of all - the artichoke dip which was so bland and awful no one would eat it. Tasted like glop. Was served with stale tortilla chips and very hard tiny pieces of bread that looked like scraps. When the server came to check on us we told her that it was the most awful thing & that they shouldn't even serve it to people, she apologized but I don't know if she told the manager as she should have. And they should have removed that $10 item from our bill - but didn't. A good restaurant would have. This place is one I would not go back to nor would I recommend it. I don't know how they have ratings on here of 3 or more stars . Blecccchhhh

Stopped here for a breakfast and found it to be quite tasty. I had the Acai (pronounced Ah-C-Aye) Bowl and a POGmosa. Wasn't expecting the pudding like texture but it was yummo anyways. My man had the Mahi Mahi Huevos Ranchero, wow so good. He also had a Mai Tai which was grody, a sugary sweet mess....he stomached it anyways. What a trooper. Wanting to go back and try the Mahi Mahi Eggs Benedict and the Taro Root Florentine. The staff was great and friendly as well. Aloha Beaches!!!

Good food and good value for the money. It is not innovating or exciting, but it fit the bill for us while on vacation in Hanalei.

Best characteristics of this place: very cold beer and all night Happy Hour on Wednesdays. Mai Tais are just okay. Service is a bit inattentive. Nothing special except their location is handy.

I give this place has a great atmosphere, good drinks and good food. I had a mai tai and my husband and I shared the seafood burrito.. Both were very good and the burritto was huge. We sat at the bar. The place was completely packed when we left.

Had a great experience here. Seated quickly & they took extra care with our toddler. Food was fast, hot & tasty. Coconut shrimp, crab quesadillas, & the ravioli. Generous portions. Easy!

Really awesome place. Great happy hour! The pork nachos are amazing! They show the temperature of the draft beer which is pretty cool. Their cocktails are great too!

The food here is very good. However wait staff is not attentive. We had a lovely out door table, but the waiter got us water (after 12 minutes of sitting) and then the meal. Never saw them again at our table. The busboy gave us a check and then refilled our waters.

There are some mixed reviews for this place but I don't think they do it justice. I ordered the fish tacos as suggested from other Yelpers and they were great, even better than the ones I had at Honalei Dolphin a couple of days earlier. I prefer the fish seared rather than fried and the flavor at Kalypso was much stronger and all around better. The pasta smelled fantastic and if I make it back on this trip I will definitely give it a shot. All in all a pretty neat spot and pretty decent food, if you're in the area try it out. There aren't a ton of choices in Hanalei at 8pm on a Sunday night anyways.

Kalypso was a great place for dinner. Personal balcony seating added to the experience. My GF and I had calamari, BBQ burger, and fish and chips; all were excellent. Definitely would recommend for quick bite.

Great food. We ate there twice once with 3 and once with 6 people. The first experience was great. The larger group had the 18% gratuity automatically included and the service suxed. I suggest break your party up below the 6 limit.

I don't know why I keep coming back... I think I forget about the crappy drinks and meh food. Maybe I keep hoping the next time will be better. The staff is pretty cool, but they can't make drinks for shizz. I went with a friend for "happy hour" and the drinks were still $6 a piece, along with expensively prices happy hour pupus... $98 later....... Well, you get the point

Our first visit to Kalypso was a great experience. The wait staff was friendly and the drinks were great. The next night we had a different waiter he wasn't as friendly as the first night but still acceptable for a rating of being friendly. The drinks however were a different story. There had to have bee a different bartender because the drinks were awful. They insisted they were made the right way. needles to say we didn't order a second round.

Food is decent. If you are looking for a strong Mai Tai, ask for the "Man Tai." You won't be disappointed! You have to go on Friday night to hear the "Uncle Coco Band." Staff is very friendly and attentive. Had a great time.

Came here our first night on island and had a wonderful dinner. Chy was an excellent server and we couldn't have been happier. Came here our last night on island and here's how it went down. We put our name in for a table. We waited for our table. A girl comes in off the street and gives the hostess a big hug and she is given the last outside table.. OUR TABLE! When we asked why this was done we were told that this girl was the manager, we couldn't believe it. THE MANAGER STOLE OUR TABLE. My wife and I are both in service and have NEVER heard of this. Very disapointed this is how they manage their restaraunt. For this they recieve 1 star from me. Better food across the street at the gourmet anyways.

This is an ok place but nothing to compel you to return. My sister had the shrimp pasta which was tasty and my daughter had the seafood linguine which was also tasty. My nephew chose the poke/calamari lettuce wraps which were not good...a really awkward and unpleasant combination of tastes. I had the huli chicken which I thought was awful add the chicken was tough...not what you'd expect from a recipe that is slow roasted. I asked if I could switch out to another meal and was told that since it wasn't improperly made that I'd have to pay for a new dish. I was surprised at this management decision to say the least and that is enough for me to decide that I won't be heading back again.

Service was good and pretty fast. We came at noonish on a Saturday. Five stars for accommodating our party of six including a wheelchair without hesitation or a wait. My MIL had the ahi poke (her first poke and first seared ahi) and gave it four stars. My FIL had the fish sandwich: five stars. Beef burgers: five stars. I had the taro burger, split with my daughter and it was excellent. Recommend to vegetarians and anyone. We also split a fish taco order. Not good. My daughter ate half of her portion. I ate 3/4 of mine. It just didn't taste good. Was fishy. Gray. Not special. I was kind of annoyed because I love fish tacos. Glad I had the half taro burger to offset the tacos. I liked the ambiance, breezes, and beer. Fire Rock on tap is my fave.

This was our second time tying out Kalypsos and disappointed again.some great ingredients but the food is lost in the attempt to make it something fancy. Last night we tried the fresh catch of the day (Ahi) and it was smothered in caramelized onions and a cream sauce that overpowered the delicate fish. I have to say the onions could not have been better but all of it together was not good. Kids Mac straight out of the Kraft box with a little cheese on top. Friendly staff. Good atmosphere for Kauai and typical high pricing!

Decided to eat here after a long day. I had the fish tacos which were boring. The small amount of fish was hidden under a ton of cabbage, minimal flavor. The menu is a tourist trap, they don't advertise prices, must be ashamed of them. I was asked if I wanted sour cream and or guacamole with my tacos, oh that's $2.00 each (not all you can eat). I had a drink and was asked if I want house or island rum, took the island rum option, and that was $4.00 on the check. There are better eats on the island, I will stay away in the future.

I was very disappointed w/ our experience w/ dinner here last night. Usually, food is very good & drinks are very good (except the tourist Mai tai's- I always pass on those). Wife's drink (Tropical Itch) was watered down, very weak & bland. I had 3 buck Coronas, can't go wrong there! Wife ordered the roast beef sandwich - meat tough & fatty. I had fish tacos. Just ok. Not bad or great, just ok. Service was good & quick. Food just ok. 3 dollar Coronas for the win!!!!!

We've been here on recent trips and have always liked it. We went here a few days ago and it was disappointing. Our food came out cold, they mixed up one of our orders with another person's order and wouldn't fix it, and our waitress was especially jittery. Maybe she was new. The nachos however are spectacular.

The food was mediocre at best, but our server and the drinks were amazing!! We would love to return one day without kids and hang out in the bar. They also have an excellent happy hour. I loved the location and the open air feeling while dining there. I look forward to returning one day!

After a 20 minute wait, seated on the covered patio. Service was somewhat slow and became a bit surley when we finally asked about our food. Tthe waiter blamed the delay on the fact that we ordered the appetizer and he doesn't turn in the main order till the appetizer is served -- Really? The food: Absolutely the best calamari I've ever tasted. None of those stringy circles of mostly batter. These pieces were about the size of a piece of chalk lightly battered and nicely browned. Fish tacos and shrimp tacos were just OK. Fish was poorly seasoned and one dining companion noted it as a bit fishy. My grilled shrimp tacos would have been great had the shrimp been cooked just a tad longer and also seasoned. Generous topping of cabbage/cilantro slaw and a delicious chipotle dressing. Accompanied by a generous portion of black beans and rice. Unfortunately, the rice was way over seasoned with a spice I didn't recognize and absolutely could not tolerate.

My husband and I recently spent our honeymoon on the lovely island of Kauai. On our 3rd day (we only stayed a week) we discovered Kalypso's. We immediately fell in love with the location, atmosphere, and all the smiling patrons inside; at which point, we decided we MUST try the establishment for ourselves. We googled the menu first and then almost ran each other over trying to place our orders INSIDE the venue shortly after. Upon our first visit, we arrived for breakfast. We ordered the crab omelet and the blackened mahi mahi benedict. Holy freaking CRAP. What a great first experience! The mahi mahi was cooked beautifully, the omelette was more crab than egg, which I entirely appreciate. They serve potatoes on the side which are perfectly seasoned and, more importantly, crisp. We returned twice more (3 times in one week!) to taste their alternate, deliciously sounding dishes, and we were never disappointed. We ended up ordering the two breakfast items mentioned above, fish tacos, crab quesadillas, fresh catch and crab wrap, chicken pesto sandwich (the best sandwich of my LIFE), local beers, and a signature shot, in which case you can keep your darling shot glasses. We are still taking about how much we miss Kalypso's and wish there was one here for us to frequent. We sure hope are able to visit Kalypso's again in our future!

This place was a lot better before it changed ownership a few years ago. It just keeps getting worse and worse though, which is why I'm finally writing a review. All 3 in our party ordered the fish and chips plate. Very small portions for $14 and fish was a bit overcooked. The drinks are good and so is the happy hour food and deals. The Mai Tai is decent. My water glass sat empty the majority of the dinner. I used to really like this place but quality has just fallen over the last 5-6 years.

Basic bar food. Good service, but don't expect high end food here. Came here after a day at the beach, and wanted a quick bite - didn't expect gourmet food and with limited options - this hit the spot. Had the BBQ Cheeseburger w/fries - satisfied by salty cravings. Hubby did the fish of the day - even though I warned him we are not at a fancy place and it was mediocre. Make sure to get a window spot to at least do some people watching!

Loved the atmosphere! After a day on the beach we were hoping to find a Hawaiian style, open aired restaurant,. Food was excellent. Fish tacos were a little on the dry side but otherwise delicious. Bbq burger perfect. Happy hour mai tai could be a little stronger ;) In all honesty still really glad we found this place.

Kalypso was average. Nothing special. In this review, I will be talking about the atmosphere, food, and service. The atmosphere in Kalypso, was a funky tropical island theme, with tables constructed of bamboo. We sat next to the bar, which was also made of bamboo, and the noise from it was quite loud and annoying. The ceiling was layered with a bamboo fence like you could buy at the hardware store. The walls (also layered with bamboo) were lined with beautiful wooden Hawaiian art. They were made with Koa wood and carved into surfers, paddle-boarders, mermaids, turtles, and many other things that had to do with Hawaii. I ordered the 8 oz. Maui Burger, which was ok. Kalypso didn't have the usual American cheese,so I opted for cheddar instead. The meat and cheese worked together well, but it was the bun I had a problem with. The bus was sweet. I absolutely do NOT like burgers with sweet buns. If the bun was NOT sweet, I would have enjoyed my experience here better. Also, French Fries do not come with the meal. You have to pay $1.95 to get fries. Others in my party ordered the Seafood Burrito which was "humongous and filling" according to them. It also lacked seafood. Kalypso has a pretty good value for the quality of their entrées. The service here is fine! Our waitress was attentive and seemed to like her job. When she served our food, she asked if we needed anything else. The busboy kept refilling our water very frequently. After we paid the check he came back to our table just as we were preparing to leave. My overall experience at Kalypso was average. If I had to, I would come back, but order something else. Four stars for Kalypso! ****

Came for lunch. My husband and I were starving (which usually makes things taste better). We both ordered the fish taco plate $14.95. The good took a whole to get to our table and when it finally arrived it was cold. I usually don't complain this bad but the rice and beans were hard and without flavor (I had to put all of the salsa on it). Tacos were decent (rubios fish tacos back in Cali are much better). The worst part of the experience was the service (there wasn't any). All of the servers are kids and they were all flirting and talking to each other instead of waiting on tables. I haven't been there for dinner but I would not recommend this place for lunch

  • Natasha H.

We had the Happy Hour Platter, a Longboard and the house chardonnay. All were Totally Grodie to the Max! The tab was $35. At least the girls are hot and it is the place to be seen, as the tourists dress up & go out wandering for the night.

The atmosphere here is wonderful, and I'm sure if you come here for snacks and drinks, it's great. But we came here for lunch and it didn't knock our socks off. Two of us (we are a party of four) had the special, which was a smoked pork quesadilla. Usually the specials are tried and true dishes, but neither one of us was impressed. Our friend had calamari that was extremely tough. My husband had the best meal, mussels. It was supposed to be clams and mussels, but they were out of clams, so he got all mussels. The waitress did tell him in advance of it. It worked out great, because they were delicious! I tasted one and wished I had ordered his choice. Overall, I would recommend this place for drinks and appetizers. Or order the mussels!

This restaurant was recommended to my roommate. Super cute and open. There was a short wait, but we were seated fairly quickly. I told the hostess and my waiter that it was my birthday, but nothing was done to celebrate it. That was disappointing as I was away from my friends and family for my birthday. Our waiter was horrible. The table next to us was seated 10 minutes after us and received their order first. Our waiter said our food was delayed due to a big group order placed right before us. Well, then how'd the other table get their food? My mango daiquiri was fabulous. And my ahi tacos were yummy too. The ambience was fair. The service was horrible. I enjoyed the food though!

Eh, as with everything else here, unimaginative and pricey.

  • Mare M.

Stopped here when we did the tourist thing in Hanalei. Food and drinks were a bit pricey, and the service was a bit on the slow side. The food was delicious. We sat on the patio at the front, and that it was a good place to people watch while we waited for our drinks and food. This is not a place where I will return

    (3)
  • Malia H.

Wow, that was average. Although there were a lot of open tables, there was a ten minute wait. Then, it took over ten minutes to get our drinks after they were ordered. In retrospect, I would have ordered drinks directly from the bar. It took less time for our calamari to come out than our drinks, and it's such a bummer to have an appetizer in front of you and nothing to wash it down with. For my entree, I ordered a burger, medium - it arrived well done. I might expect that from a cheap restaurant, with cheap meat, but it was an $11 burger, and the menu was touting the local beef, and I have always loved Hawaiian beef. But sadly, it was hard, brown, and dry.

We had a wonderful time after a day of fun at the beach relaxing at Kalypso. The samgpler pupu platter and calamari were excellent. Great atmosphere, good pricing, and great service! We met our friends here from Oahu. You can't miss it. It's on the right as you first drive into Hanalei Town.

  • Bradley D.

Was good food. Wide range on the menu. We ordered the prawns and penne pasta dish. *** Prawns were all cleaned and prep'd correctly***. Food was just middle of the road. Bar food. Younger crowd and a few old people who were touristing and most likely came in cause the prices. All dishes under $30. No negatives but no stand out positives. That's why it got 3 stars.

I eat at Kalypso's every year when I visit and always order the fish tacos which tend to be ono (my favorite). I never know when it's going to be a God-like experience or when it will be totally mediocre. Sometimes the fish is dry and chunky which makes eating the taco difficult. This last visit in October it was not a good taco.. but I will try again next year and hope that it will match the couple of times that I swore it was the best I have ever had.

  • Ingrid C.

There's not too many places in Hanalei that have a late lunch and a cool patio for people-watching, so that right there is already a plus. I had the fish burger of the day (which was ahi tuna). It was good, but nothing special. The fish was cooked well, and the condiments were expected. Nothing to wow yourself, but nothing to really complain about, either. Cold beer is always good, too, right? The service was good, the waitresses were friendly, and my companion found ours attractive. I'm reaching for things to say.

  • Henry L.

Bland and overpriced. You want me to continue? Ok, fine. I ordered a teriyaki burger with pineapple. You'd think the being in Hawaii the pineapple slice would be either larger/thicker or more flavorful. It wasn't. I could barely even taste it. I don't think they seasoned the burger meat at all either. For $11, you don't even get fries. Other dishes we sampled: halu halu chicken. Bland. You couldn't tell that it was supposedly marinated for 24 hours. Maybe 24 minutes. What else... fish & chips. That was a little better. They used ono instead of the usual cod. It made for a much larger and thicker piece of meat. But it was the preparation that would make the dish stand out. It's the meat. The nice thing about this restaurant is the decoration. It's festive and tropically appointed. The front deck is a decent spot to tourist watch. If you do come here, try and make it for the happy hour (before 5:30). Then I think the prices are more reasonable and you can get full on the calamari and coconut shrimp.

Best baja fresh tacos ever!!! I went twice while I was there last week. First time I had fresh ahi tacos there was so much ahi I couldn't close the tortilla.Second time there I was going to try something else but fresh catch of the day was Ono.Unbelievable best taco I ever had. Both times the service was awesome. Second time we were there the waitress who is usually the Barkeep was spot on. I eat out a lot and am partners with a restaurant group in San Diego I know good service when I see it. She was slamed but managed every thing perfect. Mai tai's were great and they had Sculpin on tap. Can't wait to return next year.

Fish and Chips and the Spicy BBQ burger are safe bets to please most average appetites. Also, the kids meal options are *very* reasonable for the location *and* a very good value considering the price point of the main entrees off their regular menu. So close to a "Yay" review, yet, the courtesy of the staff was respectable...just not over the top.

Decent Happy Hour, expectable menu for a tourist oriented stop. Burgers, deep fried fish mixed into every other dish, nachos, and crosscut french fries sum up the majority of the menu. Busy with a decent island/bar vibe. I opted for something a little different under their "specialties" section: Huevos Rancheros, just to see how they were. It read like a a hawaiian spin on a texmex favorite. The best way I can describe it is this: open face bean and rice burrito, large piece of fish on top, with an over-easy egg and cheese on top of that, with a side of unexpected fries. Nothing was bad about it, but nothing was good. It was a overall layered pile of things that really didn't work together. The burrito needed hot sauce, the fish needed (and came with) malt vinegar, and the runny egg after all said and done, just didn't belong there mixing in with everything. Crosscut french fries with it- ummm, well confusing as a complement to the dish, but the better part. Service was kind, in spite of being slammed, and I applaud her for dealing with the real jerk at the next table she was serving. Not only demeaning her, but he was going to the bar to fetch his own things (beers, ketchup, extra napkins) if they did not come instantaneously and then using it as leverage to yell at her more. We were able to hear everything and she handled it well.

Great place for Sunday NFL football. Decent breakfast, good beer selection, and great service. Waitress recommended the pork & green chilli quesadillas which was not on the menu but really tasty. Can't wait to try some more dishes.

We happened on this place walking through Hanalei... my hubby was going through soccer withdrawal and they had it playing! The calamari was melt in your mouth tender and the drinks were strong... what else can you ask for? We later went back and they happily changed the channel for my hubby so he could watch the USA/Canada game!

You may take a look at the mediocre reviews on Yelp, then scratch your head as you walk by this place, because it always seems to be busy. Hmmm, perhaps the tourists that review the place are overly picky. So, like my husband and I, you'll walk in and have a seat. The waitress will plop a couple menus on the table, and then walk away for 15 minutes, and perhaps, like me, you'll convince yourself that oh, that's just "island time". Actually, it turns out that it's just shitty service. When the waitress finally returned, we put in an order for a mai tai and a mango 'rita. The 'rita was decent, but the mai tai was weak. For dinner, we ordered the fish tacos and the fish sandwich with waffle fries. The black beans and rice that came with the tacos were completely bland. You'd do better by going to Big Save and buying some Zatarain's. Seriously. The fish in the tacos and on the sandwich were also flavorless. The best part of the meal were the waffle fries, which actually had some flavor and were nice and crispy. At one point during the meal I asked the waitress which wines they offered. She returned a few minutes later with a wine list, which she literally tossed on the table, and didn't return for at least 10 minutes. At that point my husband and I decided we wouldn't reward the place with any more service, so we walked down the street to have a cocktail at Tahiti Nui, where we should have gone for dinner in the first place. This place may be fine for saddling up to the bar to watch a game, but avoid at all costs for an actual meal.

Very convenient location and long hours. Full bar. Drinks were perfectly good. Food was below average. My husband had the calamari appetizer which he said was good. I ordered the 'Broke Da Mouth" tri-tip steak cooked medium. It was overcooked which makes tri-tip very tough and chewy. It was not worth $23. My husband had the New York Steak with shrimp. He had the garlic butter which is one of two options. I am not exagerrating when I say there was AT LEAST 1/2 cup of garlic butter on top of his steak. It looked closer to 3/4 cup. Who needs that much butter? Overpriced, not recommended.

I'm being a bit generous with the 3 stars... in reality they sit somewhere between "meh" and "a-ok"... to walk up, it's a cute little tropical place that looks to have possibility. My cousins and I were meeting the rest of our family there, and found them at the bar, already a round deep. Since there were no seats open at the bar my uncle asked the bartender if we (meaning the 3 of us who just walked in) could just grab a table. She pondered this for a second, and gave some reply about "well they can't really just stand there, it's kind of a main walkway..." Yeah, no shit, that's why he was asking. Luckily (or maybe not) a couple of seats opened up right then at the bar so we took them. The bartender did not seem pleased. After ignoring us for a bit she came over and asked if we wanted drinks, to which I replied "strawberry daiquiri" as I so often do in life when PBR isn't an option. She gave me a weird look and said "you mean virgin?" Um no, I mean with rum. Lots of rum. I must have been glaring at her (I was starving, and get that way when hungry) because she finally said "you're not 21 are you??" "Nope, I'm 26" She clearly didn't believe me because she studied my ID like it was a fake. In retrospect I think she was doing backwards math, which was exactly what the other bartender did when my 22 year old cousin offered up her ID... only that bartender actually admitted to counting backwards as she moved her fingers (but at least she was nice about things). Now I understand I look young, I get that all the time. The thing that pissed me off was how rude she was about it. Kauai in general is very strict when it comes to drinking age, which is fine. All it takes is a simple "can I see your ID?" Don't give me attitude about it. Anyway, I digress... The nachos were massive and damn good. Didn't pay much attention to the rest of the menu since we had dinner plans elsewhere, but all the small plates looked awesome. I'm giving the place the benefit of the doubt that had I been sitting at a table and not at the bar things would have been fine. Granted other reviews are leading me to believe otherwise, but while we were there everybody seated seemed pretty happy. Prices were comparable to everywhere else on the island, and I enjoyed watching surfing on one of the flat screens behind the bar. If I ever find myself back in Kauai, I'll probably give them another shot, but I will be steering clear of the evil blond bartender.

when an owner runs after you after you have been told, apologetically, that the kitchen is closed, to tell you that he will ask the cook to make something for you and the starving kids, you know the service will be good.... and it was. food was great, we had the macho nachos, taro burger (for my wife) and the spicy bbq burger. I washed my part down with an IPA. all was well, you cant go wrong!

Mediocre, overpriced food. I had the Fish Fry. Dry, overcooked and generally unappealing.

I came here from my hotel as it is probably the only real sports bar on the North Shore. I did a little research online and asked some of the locals and they directed me here. Cab ride with tip from my hotel was $20 each way. Not what I expected but oh well. Don't think I will do that again. Okay people who wrote reviews about this place and gave it bad ratings. It's a sports bar that happens to serve food! This is not a fine dining experience! Of course there are better places so do your research first! Well, I heard that the nachos were good here. I decided to order some. You can choose between a small portion or a large portion as well as what type of meat you like on it. I order the steak in the small portion size. The bartender was very helpful. The one thing I did not like about this place is that I had called in advanced about a game I wanted to watch and a girl answered the phone and looked into whether they was showing the game. She confirmed that they would be showing it. So now I am excited to watch some football and have some beers. I belly up to the bar and noticed Sports Center on the TV and some surfing channel. That was it. I inquired about the game and was informed that they did not show the game. Not good. The food and beer was not worth the $20 cab ride back to the hotel.

Stopped here for lunch on a rainy day. The food was decent. My wife and I ordered the mahi mahi salad. The BBQ-based sauce was good and the fish was well-cooked, but the salad itself was a bit dry. Others at the table seemed satisfied with their dishes (shrimp tacos, teri burger, chowder). The waitress forgot to put in our order of onion rings. They were so late, we just canceled them. Lost a star there.

Do you remember the chain restaurant that used to have tacky knick-knacks stuck all over their walls? It was TGIFridays or Benagins or Chilis or Applebees or one of those other banal American restaurants. Actually I think several of them ended up doing it eventually. The idea was to create some sort of atmosphere that was 50% authentic and 50% kitsch? Of course when all 10000 locations have the same crap it was just 100% unintentionally ironic. Kalypso needs to do that for Hawaii because they've got the rich, white, fratboy in Hawaii experience down to a science! Grass hut themed bar? check! Alternating Reggae & Jack Johnson soundtrack? check! Extreme sports on the TVs? check! Waitress in tight shorts? check! Don't get me wrong, the restaurant is mostly unoffensive - we were in Kauai for a week and ended up eating there twice. They've got a full bar, the location is centrally located, parking is easy. If you're burned out from being on the beach all day you can settle in here and get exactly what you might expect. I'm not even going to discuss the food because ultimately it doesn't matter. When you come to this place you're beyond caring about the actual food you're eating. It's as pointless as asking someone at Chili's how their steak was... if you're actually eating a Chili's steak you obviously don't care.

Went here for their daily 3-5pm happy hour. They have $5 cocktails. They were ok for what we paid. The margarita as a little watered down & a bit sour fir my taste. My wife's Mai Tai was a little on the sweet end as well. Her Pina Colada was the best of the 3 drinks we tried. We tried happy hour appetizer sampler. The only good thing was the fried calamari. Everything else tasted like it was taken out of the freezer & put straight into the fryer. It had no flavor at all. As several reviews have pointed out, the service was bad. No one came up to us until we gad been sitting for a little over 10 minutes. Several waitresses walked by & I gave the the "I need service" look only to get the "you are not my table" look back. Eventually someone asked us if we had been helped. Definitely not the place to go if you want to get a quick bite to eat.

Oh man, only 3 star for Kalypso? Why? This place is sooo yummy! I had the Ono Fish Burger (it's the theme for this vacation) and it was super delicious!!!! It came with a cesar salad and that was yummy too!!! The downside to what I had was the guava juice. It seemed watered down as though they cut it in half with water as well as put too much ice in it. Oh well... The waitress was nice. Service was good. I'll be back!

All I gotta say is they are AWSOME! My beers where ice cold and my Seahawks where on their tv's! Not to mention several Seattle fans in one section! Thanks Kalypso! We will be back.

This was my husband and I's first meal in Kauai. I'll just put it this way, it's just bar food. I had a fish sandwich which was pretty good and my fiancé had the fish and chips which were not bad. However, I was served a dirty glass of water that still had lipstick all over it. To me, that is unacceptable. Overall, there are SO many better places to eat in Hanalei. I'd probably not go back.

Aloha here we are in Kauai what a beautiful island. All I could think about was the delicious fresh seafood we would be enjoying daily however we've been here for two days and only experienced average to below average dishes you can find on the corner of any mainland town. Calypso is just that nothing exciting a boring menu with average tasting fare. Normally I wouldn't order a crab stuffed omelette but hey I'm on an island lets try some fresh crab right. WRONG very fishy tasting nothing fresh or exciting. I've eaten fresh crab this isn't it. The decor is about as uneventful as the menu the only thing that saves this place and many of the other restaurants is the location, location, location otherwise I would bet heavily on closed doors if they had to compete in the mainland restaurant market. My buddy and I came back later in the day on Saturday for a cold beer. The place was packed with people and uncoordinated wait staff scurrying around to serve them. I tried to observe what it was that made this place so popular and again found nothing more than their size and corner location in the middle of this bustling little town. UPDATE: raising them from 2 to 3 stars. We gave them another try and had a much better experience. The fish and chips were delicious no fishy taste and the service was better this time around. All and all they do a good job for what they are a local pub/sports bar.

Walked in, walked out. Didn't come to Kauai for bad looking nachos. Probably cool if your early 20's and going for happy hour and have a group of friends to watch a game. But as a vacation restaurant - eh, not so much.

    (1)
  • Ryan J.

Hard to find reasonable and tasty options on the North side of the Island. This place fits the bill. Decent value and a good spot to keep on mainland sporting activities.

  • F. P.

I got the impression this was a tourist trap (didn't realize until later that this is a chain) ... but we were hungry and the options (at least places that didn't have long lines) were limited. So we entered at our risk. Service is fine and there are sports games on the various TVs but in terms of food, it was rather blah. First of all, cocktails were really bad (mine literally tasted like watered down pineapple juice without any alcohol). The loco moco was average and nothing spectacular. Didn't like the crab and fish sandwich (tasted too fishy to me). Meh.

  • Tom C.

We only did happy hour at Kalypso, so this review only speaks to my impression of the happy hour scene ... My wife and I ran into a friend on a hike and we all decided to try Kalypso for a drink. We caught the happy hour drink specials. For 4 drinks, we paid $20 including tip ... which is quite the bargain on Kauai's north shore. I had a Mai Tai and it was really tasty. We were so impressed by the drink prices that we made it back for a second time later in the trip. This time, we also ordered the nachos. Surprisingly, the nachos were top notch. Great mix of toppings, crispy chips with a good amount of melted cheese. The guac wasn't the best, but overall these were damn good nachos. Again, the drinks did the trick at the reduced happy hour prices. This place has a nice beachy feel to it, with a wood interior and a series of bay window-like porches that offer private tables. We were lucky to score one of these porch tables during a bit of rain and it was really fun to sit outside but not get wet. They also have flatscreen tvs for those interested.

  • Pinguino K.

When you walk into this place, it looks like a trendy tourist trap. And the prices are. But the fruity hawaiian drinks are delicious, and I had one of the best fish tacos ever. However, the rice is awful and dry. I'd still go back.

    (3)
  • Sandra W.

I'm surprised to see mediocre reviews! Kalypso is a great place for both locals and haole! Try the Mai Tai with extra dark rum and Loco Moco with ahi or mahi mahi instead of the burger patty. Mmmm-ahalo!

    (5)
  • Kelley F.

Sample platter for happy hour was below average. Cheap American food and the Mai tai and daiquiri were pure sugar syrup. The best part is sitting outside.

    (2)
  • Ryo S.

We got to the restaurant before closing time. Having seen all negative reviews right after being seated, we became skeptical. We skipped cocktails and just ordered an ice tea. The waiter was nice and he gave us two ice teas even tho order was only one. We ordered penne pasta and fish tacos. The food came promptly and to the reviewers' credits they really were mediocre especially for the price. This restaurant from outside looks like the best restaurant in town and their pricing also add to the illusion, but it really is 2nd class. Otherwise, mediocre food ain't that bad.

  • Paul B.

Whenever the Hanalei Wake-up Cafe is too busy to seat us, we walk across the street to Kalypso for breakfast or lunch. Much higher prices but still well worth the money. I could not finish the Moco Loco, it was way too much to eat.

    (3)
  • Erin S.

As far as I can tell there isn't any good food in Hanalei. We walked into Tahiti Nui and sat next to some people who were complaining about their cold pizza so we went across the way to Kalypso. Tourist trap: yes. Bad food: yes. Expensive: yes.

we had good service but our food average. we had to send back one dish. It was half price wine night so that was nice. :-)

Great location in Hanalei (one of my favorite places on earth!) and love the open atmosphere. I had heard about their famous breakfasts...I need to go back and order something more decadent than the taro burger. It was yum, just not heavenly. My server was super friendly and helpful. Next time...it's the french toast, for sure.

This place is def a hit or miss... We went over to Kauai for V-day, and the first mornin' we had b-fast @ Kalypso and it was good. The service was good, and the food wasn't anything to write home about, but I especially liked the 1 healthy thing on the menu "the acai bowl" yummy!! My bf loved his bloody mary..a little spicey 4 me... The 2nd time we went into Kalypso for lunch and the service was HORRIBLE!! The waitress was so stressed out, I think they gave her tooo many tables..she couldn't handle. She got our margherita wrong, the salad had wilted lettuce and the burger & fries were cold and soggy. She didn't say sorry, nothing. She said she "wasn't going to play this game with us". We asked to speak to a manager, and she just looked at me like I was stupid. Ok~ whatever...she took the bill away and gave us 50% off. We didn't eat any of our meal. and she was a total bitch! I WOULD NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN!!! I HATE BAD SERVERS!!! I don't know, it's like this server woke up one morning and decided she wanted to waitress~ She should learn communication skills!!! That's really all it takes!

    (2)
  • Tyler M.

This place would be better if they had good food. $15 for 2 very bland fish tacos. $19 for burnt chicken parm? Come on! Weak food, high prices. Cute waitress but otherwise boring place.

  • Marcie C.

Worst clams and mussels I've ever had. At first I thought I must be a seafood snob since I'm from Seattle. Nope, they really were bad. The mussels were so overcooked that they actually had cracks in them. And they were completely dried out, not juicy like they should be. And my clams tough. The only decent thing was the bread and sauce. The loco moco tasted much better, but a bit sweet. They were featured on Kauai Visitor Information Center and I feel like they lied to me about it being good...

    (1)
  • J M.

I agree with Laura S. This place is not really for a fancy dinner... We actually made it a ritual to stop by for Happy Hour after going to the nearby beach everyday! Had a blast and the Mai Tai's rock. The appetizers were all good...especially the hot wings..we stuck to hot only and skipped the sweet ones. Stick to the finger foods and drinks! It's casual with an open air environment with some outside seating and plasma TV's all over....pretty cool place to hang after a long day in the sun.

Part One: Our first night on the North Shore of Kauai was interesting to put it mildly. The first place we tried to eat was this place called Kalypso. We thought we had been lucky in our search for food because it was the first place we stopped and lo and behold! Taro Burgers! Yay! We were seated at a small table outside with a view of the town. We immediately ordered a couple of beers. When the waitress came to take our order we were informed that their Taro patties were made locally and they had run out! Because we were freaking starving we ordered french fries and onion rings, finished our beers and set out to locate FOOD! We stopped at several restaurants to pursue menu's, the places that had stuff we might have eaten were all sold out!! WTF! This leads me to believe that someone needs to open a veg restaurant in Hanalei!!! Like NOW! Part Two: On our last day on the North Shore we decided to check in at Kalypso to see if they had received a new batch of Taro patties, which they had. Once again we were seated outside but this time our table was located on the side of the building where we could watch and feed the chickens! I found it very entertaining to watch the waitstaff chase chickens out of the dining area. The Taro Burgers... The patties themselves were tasteless but all the fixings made it pretty darn good.

The food is mediocre but it's better than most of the reviews say. The staff is laid back but prompt and very friendly. Considering every other restaurant in this price range, this place only has a 2 but deserves at least a 2.5 so I'm giving it 5. All of the negative reviews on this restaurant are likely written by nouveau riche snobs staying at Princeville Resort. You rich folks should take your libelous food poisoning claims back to California. You probably had a stomach bug. Nine out of ten food poisoning claims are false.

Finished surfing before they were open and waitress let us in early to sit and relax. Started with the artichoke and spinach dip which was so big it could have been the meal. Order the loco moco and it was large enough for two. Good food and great open air feeling restaurant.

    (4)
  • Paul H.

This is probably a better place to drink than to eat. I really wouldn't get the pesto chicken sandwich. It was very soggy and didn't taste right. My wife had a burrito and liked it..hence the 3star review. Our server was really nice (I wish I remembered her name) she mentioned that she had a young child like my 2yr old. Overall an ok place in Hanalei to eat.

    (3)
  • Lisa M.

Food was average, nothing special but it's certainly edible. The dining room was comfortable, and they had a great beer selection. A bit of a tourist trap, but there are worse places in Hanalei.

  • Tim P.

I was there a couple of times in May of 2008. There aren't a ton of lower priced food options on the north shore so this place served our needs. It is a hawaiian Applebees, (bad), but the fish and chips made with Ono were very good, not greasy and fit the bill for a couple of quick food stops. The bartender was very nice and talkative as well. So go to the bar order the Ono fish and chips and a beer, and you should be ok.

  • seankor W.

Fried artichokes were good, salad was decent. Fish sandwich was decent. Overall ok, not best food, not the worst we had in Kauai.

  • Tiffany K.

Not sure why this place has a bad rap, so let me see if I can clear some things up: 1) They have pub food. And by pub food standards, it's pretty darn good. Make sure you have the Nachos (add island Pork if you can) which are delicious. 2) It's one of the only spots on North Shore to catch games (they have full satellite). 3) It's a visitors and locals spot--which means it's great people watching and meeting. 4) The service is great--bar tenders are entertaining/fun, and the table service is spot on--informative, helpful, quick and easy. 5) This is not the place for a quiet, romantic night. This is a great place for a few beers, a game, and even live music.

Ok I went twice...the first time for dinner when they had dinner plates of fish and I have to say the food was bland....I had to salt everything. The fish was all right tried both the mahi mahi (?) and shrimp and my friend got the opakapaka. Both were just all right, not the tender moist fish you'd expect...maybe a bit overcooked and underseasoned. I really enjoyed the calamari appetizer the calamari are served as steaks and are great. Served hot and fresh, the calamari was cooked just right and the portion was a nice size. Service was good. Went for lunch today with my sister because I was all excited to have her try their bland (she likes bland apparently) food and yummy calamari...bad bad bad idea...would never go back. The waitress never checked up on us and the food was just bad. She suggested the baja style fish tacos so we decided to get it. crap. her tip sucked. for like 14.95 the plate came with two tacos and beans and rice. The tacos each had two small chunks of mahi mahi each...the size of maybe an inch all around...AND it was overcooked. I like fish tacos at rubio's better and those are wayyyy cheaper and actually good. I also ordered the calamari due to my good experience before. The portion size was smaller, the size of the calamari steaks was half the size, and it was served lukewarm (as if it had sat out for a bit). Seriously annoyed. Maybe the portion was due to it being a lunch portion but to serve it lukewarm ...no not ok. Anyways total bill was about 27 bucks for an entree and an appetizer. I wouldn't go back.

I ate here three nights ago, and I can't remember what I had. It just wasn't memorable. I remember we sat on the front patio, that the torches were lit, and that the service was okay. I remember the paper napkins and the comforting sounds of Monday Night Football in the background. I must have had some sort of fish entree, but I still can't remember anything specific about it. I remember every other meal I had that day, just not what I had at Kalypso. In fact, I remember what I had when I came here a few years ago when it was Zelo's, and that was pretty good, but what I had at Kalypso? Haven't the foggiest. My wife just reminded me that I had the crab-stuffed shrimp with seared Ahi. It was okay, but not very memorable.

  • Michael S.

Great service but the food was not very good. Wings seemed like they were right from the frozen food section of a grocery store. Fish tacos were just not very tasty. Too bad because it is a great location.

    (2)
  • Joshua G.

Food was meh. We had the seafood chowder - not great. For the price, would have expected a large cup. The fish was dry. The nachos were enormous but the cheese was burned. The fish on the fish tacos was over cooked and dry. The fish and chips my wife had looked disappointing too. The drinks were great (coco gorilla and kona colada). The prices were outrageous. If you're gonna spend this kind of money, go to Bar Acuda or Bouchons and get some good food on exchange for so much of your hard earned cash. I suppose if you're one of those thriving wall street bankers, you just might admire/recognize the thievery here.

    (2)
  • Bobby B.

This place is getting a rating this high only because they have a bunch of TV's and all of the NFL games on TV. The food is average at best and the service is so / so. The location isn't anything special, I am not sure if there are better places to eat in town however you shouldn't have your expectations set to high here. The nachos were pretty decent and the bloody mary's were good as well. I would be back if it is football or other sports I want to watch are on, otherwise I would probably check out another place, just not tropical taco, because that place is much worse than Kalypso's.

    (3)
  • Heidi D.

Went here for lunch, thought the interior was a neat little place. I had the Huli-Huli chicken. Which claimed it had been marinating over night. So with that, I ordered it. It was OK. Nothing I'll go back and have again. it was dry and not that fab. But, we did order a mango daquiri which was really good!

    (3)
  • Cheryl M.

This place is cute from the outside, but Zelo's it is NOT. (We lost a good place when it closed) Drinks are horribly weak and tasteless. Fish sandwich would get a 3, but I had to almost beg the bartender to take my food order. Won't go back.

    (2)
  • Wes Y.

I had the shrimp tacos for lunch...they were very bland so I had to dump all the salsa sauce they gave me to give it some flavor. I'd have to say, the beans and rice they give you with the tacos were better than the tacos themselves...service was fast though during our lunch.

We found this place on our last day on the island. Excellent drinks and food . . . all reasonably priced. Great ambiance (felt like we were actually in Hawaii).

Nice place, what a tropical island bar & grill should feel like. Crab crusted fish was delicious, with a tasty sauce on it. Husband liked fish tacos. Kids didn't see food they thought they'd like there so they passed. Drinks were very good. Nice atmosphere, pleasant staff, great meal.

  • Aimee A.

Bland bland bland! The food has little flavor. The waitresses are not on top of their game. The iced tea is good - that's about the only nice thing I can say. Oh, and can you say "overpriced"?

  • A M.

maybe one of the few spots in hanalei to get some grub. that's what it is grub. after many tries at calypso i would have to suggest the nachos with a cold beer and the game. their bar service is great. the nachos are fresh and plentiful. if the games not playing you guarantee some surf porn.

    (3)
  • Eddie L.

Great location, great bartender, not so great food. Very Very Mushy Veggie burger. Waldorf salad dressing tasted like olive oil and medicine. Stick to the very basics here and you'll probably do fine. ie regular burgers and fries.

good choice for some appetizers and drinks!!!! :)

    (4)
  • C. H.

I generally with most of the reviews that rate this place between 2 and 3 stars. The beer was good but the food and service were average. If you spend any time in Hanalei then this would be one of the places you will want to try.

  • J W.

My fiance and I were starving and looking for a place in walking distance and Kalypso fit the bill. We walked in and promptly took a seat at the bar. The place was about 1/3 full. The bartender wasn't too friendly, didn't suggest specials, and I think I saw her smile once the entire visit. She had to verify how many grilled shrimp came on the salad when I asked. Regardless, we both ordered salads, his being the mahi and mine the grilled shrimp waldorf. When I food arrived (fairly quickly) I noticed my shrimp were not grilled, but sauteed. We were starving so I didn't say anything. All in all, the food was OK, but for a $50+ check, including 2 non-alcoholic beverages and salads as our entrees ... I was expecting much, MUCH, more. Will not be returning there for dinner this week.

    (2)
  • Christiana H.

Our waitress was super nice and it's not her fault our food was mediocre. The chips and salsa.. Salsa tasted like spaghetti sauce and chips were stale. The Huli Huli chicken was tasty but shrimp tacos lacked flavor. I needed to add about half a bottle of Tabasco and major salt to get any kind of kick from it. My Diet Coke was flat.
