Out of everywhere we stayed in Oahu we had the best experience with John and Wilma at their hostel. They were professional, personable and kind, not to mention their location was prime real estate directly across the street from a protected underwater sanctuary where we saw more fish in 5 minutes than I saw anywhere else on the island. They're also 5 minutes driving from Waimea Falls and 10 minutes driving from a very cool little town Hawieva? John had great recommendations for everything, the room was comfy and the other guests were polite too. For the price, you can't beat it and we will def be back. Thank you John and Wilma!
We LOVED out stay here. The owners (John and Wilma) and their son (John Jr) were SO friendly, helpful and nice! The customer service was top-notch! The location was perfect! We could walk across the street and snorkel and we were also walking distance to a grocery store (Foodland) and a bike rental place, as well as many great places to eat. AND only 10 minutes from Haleiwa! You couldn't beat the price either. It was everything we needed while we explored the North Shore of Oahu, a place to sleep, make meals and shower. And it was nice and clean! We will be back for sure!
Friendly staff, great location, and low prices. They have snorkeling gear to use across the street. Everything was super clean and quiet. It was by far the nicest hostel we have been to.

Reviews:
When the cooks are away, the flies come and play~ We pick up chicken from here every time we come to Haliewa. All those times were great experiences with great food. However, when we made a stop on 11/15/14 we were greeted by more than just chicken... This time we stopped by there was a horde of flies. Like if you had a mosquito net and tossed it in the air you would catch at least 10 on the first cast. That was not the entire problem... When they let the chicken rest on the table the cooks leave them unattended. Which means the flies do a tap-dance all over the chicken. The chicken itself is really good (we ordered four to take home). A nice smoky flavor to the chicken without being charred. Defiantly order a sauce for $0.50 with your chicken and either pour it over your chicken or dip the pieces in. What we also found entertaining but horrific was when we were walking back to our car, which was across the street by Scoop of Paradise, we had two dozen flies following us. I will update my review on my next visit to Haleiwa. I am hoping there will be either less flies or more effort to keep the flies off the food.
BEST CHICKEN IN THE GAME. Get the plate lunch, unless you're a big boy, then get the whole chicken with sides.
Love their chicken. Its so juicy and moist. Great seasoning on the chicken. Great friendly and fast service. Drive to Haleiwa and pick up some chicken and coleslaw. Head to the beach for lunch or dinner with a beautiful view.

IL Gelato Café

Reviews:
Located in the North Shore Marketplace next door to Cholo's, Il Gelato has made it's way out to the North Shore! We visited during the "soft opening" phase. With a slightly different set up than their Kahala location, the flavors offered are still the same, and while they don't do any of their Gelato Coppas here, you can still get a cup or cone here as well as gelato paninis, Gelato drinks and coffee, Italian sodas , acai bowls waffles, crepes, and any gelato or sorbetto flavor in "spaghetti " form. We went with the Classico Spaghetti Gelato, a Biscottini Gelato Panini and an Illy Cappucino since at the time, they were not offering crepes and waffles. While it looks cool and tastes great, the spaghetti gelato just melted too fast and the bread on our panini could have been a bit more crisp and warmer. Vanilla Gelato was inside too, when I ordered Biscottini-probably miscommunication though when a young girl took my order, and another gentleman made the panini. Of course there are some kinks to be worked out, but this is a great spot to hit up after a hot day at the beach and you can also see small batches of gelato being produced right on the spot. Looking forward to coming back and trying their waffles and crepes as they are not available at the Kahala location. ALOHA! Shaka Meter: \uuu/ \uuu/ \uuu/ \uuu/ 4
this is the most amazing gelato I have ever had! you can sample the flavors and the woman working was so nice . I live on island and will be back over and over again. I will def be going back to try the breakfast as well.
One of our favorite stops this trip. Wait staff was fantastic, selection (and samples) was outstanding. Great crepes selection as Well, thinking we may wander back for those one morning.

Matsumoto's has great shave ice!!! It's definitely one of the best that I have had on the island, or anywhere, for that matter - I still have some places to hit though, so it could easily raise up to a 5 star #1 spot for me pending visiting those other "must-do" shave ice places. A lot of the appeal is "the experience." I don't know how or when it came about, but Matsumoto's is like a household name - it's just where you go for shave ice. With that being said, it might be a little overrated - and with being overrated, the wait to get into the door let alone to order can be tedious. There is always a line out the door here! The girls are all pretty nice and they work fast here, despite being under a lot of pressure and having tons of orders to fulfill. Have your order ready when you get to the front of the line. You can pick up to three flavors! My all-time favorite is Lilikoi. Adding ice cream and/or condensed milk really MAKES it for me. For 30 cents extra, get a cup to hold your shave ice in. It's worth it, especially if you don't want to waste even a little tiny bit! I love that there is a flat penny machine in here. I'm a sucker for collecting flat pennies everywhere I go (even if I DO live here...lol). They sell some really adorable shirts - if that is your ideal kind of souvenir, I would recommend checking them out...pretty much all of them are adorable! I'm speaking about the women's shirts, of course...not sure about the guys' selection, lol.
My first experience with the new location. Same fast service but i think they have a new crew. My shave ice was packed to tightly so i had a hard time chipping chunks loose. The syrup guy did a light pour and the middle of my cone was white (and it wasn't from ordering coconut). Maybe after 6 months, they'll improve.
Matsumoto's is definitely a must stop of tourists. You can tell by the long line that wraps around outside of the store. They have a ton of little knickknacks that you can buy from cute little key chains to t-shirts and sweatshirts. They have a bunch of flavors and make sure you mix it up with more than one so you can taste a little bit of everything. I like to get the ice cream at the bottom because it's like finding the hidden treasure once you get to the bottom and it tastes SO good when you mix a little bit of the ice cream with the flavored shave ice.

1st timer; celebrating Hinamatsuri (girl's day) with another Luibueno-virgin. We yelped suggested places to eat and somehow landed on Luibueno's because neither of us had explored it yet. Prior to arrival, I took it upon myself to call ahead in case of wait time -- approximately 25 minutes -- not bad. We arrived to a hostess who greeted us and immediately walked us over to a table. No wait time? Albeit it was a Tuesday night, +2 points Luibueno. (Sidenote: my date and I are easily built for contact sports; he's a linebacker and i'm no bitty betty. While the absence of wait time was much appreciated, the excitement quickly left after our hostess sat at a tiny-cramped-window table. -1 point) At this point, we met our waiter, "Mitch." Great guy. He suggested a few seafood entrees, ordered our drinks, and served us well without ever skipping a beat. His services were much appreciated. +2 points. Most important, the food. There was a variety of authentic mexican entrees and desserts. Chicken, pork, beef and fish, infused with local flair, and flavor. (Blackened Ahi with Guac, and a creamy hibiscus sauce -- to die for). Price was reasonable ($15/plate), and portions were huge. +2 points. With thanks to our waiter, chef, and the lack of persons dining at Luibuenos on that particular night, we were able to enjoy a quiet, well deserved meal and each others company. We recognize these moments are a rare occurrence, but if our experience inspires another couple to spontaneously explore new places and new food, then its all worthwhile. Salud!
Love the hibiscus margarita from here! We do drinks here once a week and usually split an appetizer. The food here is fantastic but a little pricey. Plates run from about 12-23 bucks and margaritas about 10-12. The tacos are great. I usually get the beer battered mahi a la carte. For a nice two person dinner with drinks be prepared to spend between 60-90 dollars. The wait to get in can be a little long but the food, atmosphere and service are worth the wait. If your looking to get seats at the bar, I would recommend putting your name in for a table first and waiting it out. Your more likely to be seated first. We couldn't be more happy to call this little spot our go to place for drinks and tacos! I Highly recommend this place.
Just don't. We've gone here serval times over the past three years and always thought it was decent enough. The first couple of times it wasn't terrible, we normally take our food to go. Occasionally dining in. Then we started getting food poisoning. Not even joking every single time we ate here. From September of 2014 to last night we have eaten here four times. 3 of those times I was hugging the toilet all night long. The other 1 time it was my husband. I tried to play it off as a coincidence but after the 4th time---- come on now. Get your shit together. Don't risk it, it's not that good anyway.

Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck

Reviews:
Maybe I got here on an off day? First off, I loved the atmosphere. I like hole-in-the-wall type places - food truck, covered patio, lots of other food booths nearby. Unfortunately the food didn't live up to the hype as the shrimp was bitter. We ordered two plates of the original scampi. It was deveined nicely and I'm a garlic fan, but our shrimp was definitely bitter. You MUST stop at one of the local road-side stands and get a fresh, ripe pineapple - absolutely the BEST.
Like whoa! I'm not really a big fan of shrimp, but the shrimp scampi sure got my attention! since there was 3 of us, we each ordered different plates on the menu and hands down the shrimp scampi is the best... full of flavor... yes, oily, but still full of flavor! the spicy shrimp comes in 2nd for me, and the lemon shrimp rounding 3rd. downside is they close pretty early... and it's a bit overpriced... you're basically paying $1 per shrimp! but Giovanni's appears to have become a novelty of hawaii and you must try it at least once in your lifetime.
I tried the spicy shrimp one. It was good. Wish I had try the garlic shrimp too. From what I remember it was 12 a plate. It was pretty well worth it. Order came up fast too and everything tasted fresh.

This place was horrible. There's not much places that I swear I would never go back again ,but I guess this place became one of them. The service was horrible our waiter was rude to us. He pronounced poke to us like we were a bunch of tourists. Yes, I do know what poke is because hmmm.... i was born and raised here unlike himself. Anyways, our food was a joke other than the poke. The portion for that was sad though. I could of just ordered a whole plate of that and rice and that definitely would of been sufficient. Anyways, I ordered the pork ribs and that was super dry and my bfren ordered the ahi sandwhich which made my ribs look good. the fish was so dry that we looked at each other and asked if this was a sick joke. On top of that there was a whole bunch of flies at our table and they wouldn't seem to go away. The flies were all over our food and our daughter. And we were inside the restaurant. The customers that were sitting outside did not have one fly near them.... So yeah definitely not going there
This location is always so busy. I do love how it is right on the water and if you have a boat you can dock at the harbor and keep an eye on it while grabbing a bite. I frequently visit the Haleiwa Joes in Kaneohe. I love the garden view. Regardless both offer a great Aloha Hour which I usually partake in. This is the best time to grab pupus and drinks from the bar area.
Arriving at 11:30 when they open for lunch allows a better chance for a seat in the covered lanai (patio) overlooking the harbor. 2 wonderful salads we have enjoyed before: Crab Avocado salad & Grilled Salmon on spinach. Service attentive with numerous menu suggestions and recommendations. This was our 5th or 6th lunch there and we have enjoyed dinner three times. We will be back!

Jameson’s By The Sea

Reviews:
I'm sorry Jameson's, we REALLY wanted to love you, but you made it so difficult!!! We've eaten ALLLLLL over this island and have all sorts of favorites, but we're always looking to add to our list, especially someplace with a view. We started with 2 MaiTais, we were feeling island-y after hiking on the north shore.... we had to send them back, they were so bad.... and we'll drink just about anything fermented! And the pineapple garnish was white, juiceless and completely unripe, ick. Then my 5 y/o's grilled cheese was burned. My Thai chicken salad was (no exaggeration) a bed of lettuce, two piles of sprouts, two mealy tomatoes, a chicken breast and 2 sauces. My son called it a "sad salad".... it really was so very sad. Hubbster's hamburger was so-so, fries were awesome! We won't be headed back =-(
Great view of the sunset. I was looking forward to my dinner. I asked the waitress to help me choose my dinner, she suggested the boil shrimp instead of the baked stuff shrimps that I originally wanted. The boil shrimps, was small, not fresh and overcooked. I only go 7 tiny shrimps. The garlic fettuccine was blend and taste like boil pasta with little butter and I was never offer Parmesan Cheese. The portion was made for children & I am not a big eater. For $25.99, this is way overpriced. I know this is kind of touristy place, but at least serve decent food- I walked away disappointed and starving that I have to stop by to get more food. After dinner I stopped by the market and the shrimps at the market looks fresh and much much bigger than my dinner. I don't usually write reviews, but when I am upset with my dinner, I comment.
A little bit pricy, but portions are very generous and easily split between two people. Their special Uhua was great, lightly breaded and fresh. The shrimp on a bed of garlic linguine was also very good. We sat on the covered patio watching a crazy thunderstorm pound the island, which added to the great evening. Also, ordering drinks... believe your server when he says that their Mai Tais are a house specialty. The drink was great! A perfect balance of sweetness from a cherry, pineapple and orange juice, but not too much to cover up the layers of different rums in the drink. I recommend this restaurant for those who want decent seafood and a great drink as you look out into Haleiwa harbor, and don't be afraid to share a plate. (FYI this was the best Mai Tai I had in Hawaii.)

UPDATED (June 5, 2008): I gave them another star. We went back again and had a much better experience with the food and service. They made a mistake and put the wrong topping on the pizza I ordered so they let me keep the 'reject' (which turned out to be better than what I ordered) and brought out the right order soon after. We were seated outside because it was freezing cold inside the restaurant, but after seeing mosquitos buzzing around, we moved indoors. I still got eaten alive...my mosquito bites swelled to ginormous proportions the next day and itched like a mother. ORIGINAL REVIEW: My first time here and what did I order? Soup and salad, lol. 4 of us went on Sunday (Mother's Day) at around 2:00 and waited about 10 minutes for a table. Once we got seated, I looked around and noticed that the tables around us weren't all full and that anyone who came in were made to wait at least 5-10 minutes. Weird. Maybe they were understaffed since it was Mother's Day? Between the 4 of us, we ordered an oriental chicken salad, soup (portuguese bean) & salad combo, bbq burger, and the ahi katsu sandwich. I think it took close to 30 minutes for our food to be brought to the table. My soup and salad was the last thing to be brought, despite it being the easiest to put together. Our waitress said that 'they were working on the soup'. Do they make each cup of soup from scratch when the order comes in? I overheard the table next to ours also mention the long wait for the food. They couldn't wait any longer and wanted whatever they were waiting for to just be taken off their bill. Although our waitress was nice, service was painfully slow. =( Sorry Pizza Bob's, I don't think I'll be rushing to return back anytime soon.
Pretty decent place to stop for lunch. Food quality, price, and quantity were average. Great service.
My all-time favorite place to eat. Go there 1-3 times a week. It is a great family place, and , I love the pizza. Not the best, but love it. Have good special deals every week day. Great for locals, not bad for tourists. And after dinner, there is a great place for dessert right next store. Scoop of Paradise has video games, ice cream, video games, and fun. Try out PB's!

McDonald’s

66-457 Kamehameha Hwy
Haleiwa, 96712
Reviews:
I can't believe I'm taking the time to review/comment on a McDonalds. It's proba more of a stroll down memory lane than a review. I don't remember exactly when this McDonalds opened, but it was some time between 1986 and 1990 because that's when I lived in Haleiwa. When I first moved there in 1986, it was not there, but I do remember it was a huge controversy within the community when they were going to open. Now that I'm older, wiser (hopefully), and have come to know good food, I know my opinion would be much different now than it would've be then. At that time I was so excited because I was a 21 year old military wife and mom and I so welcomed McDonalds. I remember one particular time when my husband had just got home from work after a bomb call (he was EOD/bomb squad in the Army) and my stove was dead, and he was starving. There was nothing open at that time and at that age I didn't know how to just whip something up out of whatever was on hand. Food places that were not chains weren't open late back then so I drove to the closest McDonalds in Mililani. So I guess all I'm trying to say is that even though gray hamburger meat sucks, I was thankful they were there. Oh, how different things would be if I lived there now that I actually have money! That's okay though, those years were some of the happiest of my life. I so want to go back for a visit, but I think I would be disappointed. I'm sure it's still wonderfull, but not the tiny town it was then.
I always like to go to McDonald's in America just to see what the prices are compared with Canada. 20 nuggets for $5 WTF? Came in here for a drink and some fries after hitting up the Food trucks across the street. They don't have the dollar drink this summer. A Little over $2. I still like the fact that the value menu is $1 since it's been $1.39 back home for long time. I'm easily impressed I guess. They had a sign saying the washrooms were locked, but they weren't. I see why they have that policy though since many people walked into the restaurant just to use the bathrooms.
my first time at a mcdonalds in hawaii in over 10 years and this place was nice. but at the same time, it's a mcdonalds... i don't like to eat fast food, but this was convenient at the time.
