Vandy's is a Statesboro institution. I've been eating here my entire life. Their barbecue is unimaginably delicious. Their Brunswick stew is better than ANY you'll find anywhere else (yes, even in Brunswick, as verified by my Brunswick-native best friend). The best part about this place is the barbecue sauce. It is magical. Literally, magical. That as is the only explanation I can think of as to how it could possibly be so good. I even purchase their sauce to use at home, I love it so much. It is vinegary and delicious, with no mustard (thank goodness) like you find in barbecue sauces further up north in the Carolinas. If you've never tried it, I highly recommend it, and if you have I highly recommend you go back! This place is fantastic.

I have to preface this review by saying that I just had the chicken plate - I don't eat pork - so I can only speak for what I ate. It was good, but not great. It was covered in an off-white sauce that I have never had with BBQ before. I can't place this particular sauce, but it didn't taste like any other sauce I'd ever had. I thought the cole slaw and potato salad were average at best.

Small old school restaurant. Friendly staff. The potato salad is awesome. The BBQ is not my favorite, it was alright, but my heart has always been Texas style and beef. Brunswick stew was ok.

Grew up on this stuff. My favorite part of being in the Boro! I get a 1/2 lb and some Brunswick stew everytime I'm down there!

Classic... Old School... BBQ Vandy's is the place to go for some of the best pulled pork BBQ that you'll find anywhere. It's worth mentioning that this downtown location seems to be open for lunch only. I wish they were open for dinner.

I grew up on Vandy's BBQ. They have two locations - one that is a tiny building in downtown Statesboro where all of the bbq is made freshly daily and then driven to the location in the mall. It's a very casual place that offers an array of bbq (sandwiches, plates, etc.) and southern home cooking. The pork bbq is mouthwatering and the bbq sauce is vinger-based with the perfect amount of tang. I occasionally buy a pint of it to get my fix. The Brunswick stew is also some of the best I've had. Their french fries are crinkle fries and can leave something to be desired - I'd suggest going with a more "southern" side like the potato salad or Brunswick stew. After all, that's what they specialize in and they do it well. Service is usually good. The mall location can get pretty packed but the waitresses are sweet and attentive. For real bbq in Statesboro, there's nowhere better.

I know a fair amount about BBQ. Had a lot all over the southeast and West. This place is the Real McCoy. My food was excellent. The staff was a little slow and disorganized, but the place was like stepping into the 1950s which I liked. I live in Tallahassee, Fl. and most of our BBQ is weak tea. This place is worth the visit. I will go back when I visit my daughter who is at GSU.

Love Vandy's! Grew up eating the chopped BBQ pork with the tangy sauce and there are times I literally dream of it. So glad that some things never change.

I am always on the prowl for good barbeque. I went to Memphis about a month ago for a graphic design conference and I was in "hawg heaven" since there is a bbq joint on just about every street and every corner. I will say the same thing about Vandy's as I said about perhaps every bbq joint I ate at in Memphis: The food is good but perhaps not great. Great bbq can be had at Fat Matt's Rib shack or Fox Brothers BBQ (both in Atlanta). Vandy's is good for Statesboro but it would be considered merely average by Atlanta standards. The pulled pork sandwich is as good as any one could procure at any decent bbq joint in Georgia, but again, nothing special. The brunswick stew was a little odd - perhaps too many cooked vegetables; peas, carrots, chunks of potato and onion - making it more of a Brunswick beef stew hybrid than a traditional bbq joint type brunswick stew - but not altogether bad either. Reminded me of Poss or Dinty Moore back from my childhood days. The potato salad I will say was good also - but again, not anything special. I went to the original location on Vine St. when I went and perhaps that was the problem (limited menu). Perhaps if I tried the S' Mall location, with its expanded menu, I might have tried other items and had a different experience.

I went here twice to try it out before I depart Statesboro. The second time I had the 1/4 fried chicken which completely sucked. What makes this place "OK" is the catfish fillets I had the first time I went and the French fries which are pretty good. Personally if I wanted bbq in this town I would go to Shane's, the "Big Dad" is delicious.

The food is freshly prepared when you order, so it may take a few more minutes to get a great plate of hot fresh food.

Yep, this was some yummy barbeque!! I went with my babies and we each had the famous barbeque sandwiches...only $3.99 each...they had chips with theirs and I had the potato salad. The sandwich was one yummy creation and the meat was succulent and tender...melted in my mouth indeed! the potato salad was great. I cannot stand biting into potato salad and the potatoes are not cooked enough...not the case here, it was perfect! I went to the downtown location since it had the actual cooker...my 6 yr. old thought I was joking when i told her this is it when we got to the door...haha .She was a trooper though and flung open the door like she had been there a million times before! It is like an old shack inside but the staff make it like home!

This was one of the better barbeque places that I have ever been to in the south. It is a small restaurant located around the Mall in Statesboro, or "small" as everyone around the area refers to it because of its lack of size when compared to a typical mall. Vandy's specializes in making pulled pork sandwiches or platters. Each pork selection on the menu comes with an almost equally tasty side item like mashed potatoes or made from scratch mac and cheese. The barbeque comes with a side of vinegar based barbeque sauce or a regular pepper based barbeque sauce. Overall, this is a great hole in the wall barbeque diner to stop at if you are in the Statesboro area.

Justin B.. You are so dead on with the "small". There are actually 2 Vandys locations and the one in the downtown 'boro has a much smaller and more BBQ-centric menu. It also has a lot of history and this is the location where all the barbeque is cooked in an old smokehouse looking shack. The mall location gets deliveries daily of fresh BBQ from the downtown location. I love the downtown locale for its freshness, but the mall location has an expanded menu that encompasses more than just BBQ. They have lots of different sandwich's and down home cooking meals. They even have gizzards and livers, fried of course. My fave thing on the menu is the chicken fingers and crinkle fries. The chicken fingers are fresh and perfectly fried with not too much breading. Get fried okra on the side. This is one restaurant that I wish was in Atlanta.

I LOVE the brunswick stew! The vinegary BBQ sauce is perfect. Also, try the BBQ chicken. Very juicy and moist. Believe it or not, I the fried gizzards are AWESOME too! Fried perfectly!

I went to school at Georgia Southern back in the 60s. I love Vandy's. Yeah, the stew is different but served with white bread, the BBQ pork and sauce is outstanding. The mall location is OK and the BBQ is the same but the original is the best! I put 2 pounds, a quart of stew and sauce in a cooler and drove back to Atlanta!

You know what... Truth be told Vandy's is over-rated. There I said it. It is hyped and hyped and could never live to the Statesboro hype. It has the normal bbq restaurant/ local statesboro front. The staff wasn't very useful. Admittedly it is better than Sonny's but if you really want to find some amazing bbq take the short drive to Twin City.

BBQ is good. However, the Brunswick stew is yuck. I think they put a can of pork & beans in it? Onion rings were great & the tea too. When I asked the waitress which pie to get she responded so sweetly, "I dunno, I don't like any of it. I don't like pie."

If you like real BBQ places then check this place out. I used to live a block or two away and could smell the wonderful bbq calling me from my porch. On a fall day that was all I needed to get the barbecue craving. I believe this is the original Vany's location but there is at least one other much larger Vandy's at the Statesboro Mall. Both locations have essentially the same food but if you want the old school barbecue joint feel then the Vine St. location is the place to go.
