Was in town for soccer with the family and trusted yelp to find us a Japanese restaurant. Upon entering we were skeptical and should have trusted our gut and left. I travel a lot and this was the WORST meal I've had in a long time. Food was totally bland and the shrimp and scallops were fishy. Amazing how many 4&5 stars reviews...what a joke. Save your time and money

Best Japanese food I've ever had. I plan on being there today 5 o'clock when they open.

Ok so I'll start with the place. It's cute and cozy. Reminds me of some of the places in miami. I may be a sushi snob... But... I was left wanting. The good: edamame was good, freshly steamed and just the right amount of salt. Miso soup was Delish, just the right amount of saltiness (just all around good) The tempura roll was decent. Could have had some more tempura but flavor was ok. The sushi rice was great. As was the seaweed salad. The blah: the Spicy tuna (not spicy at allll). It was tasteless. And the nori was chewy. The bad: The tempura chicken tasted like prepackaged chicken thrown together with sub par bottled teriyaki sauce. The ginger pork was tender but again tasteless. The hibachi style veggies lacked a lot of flavor. And we left super bloated and now I am not feeling too good. Hopefully it will pass or I will have to hit up cvs for some Imodium. Definitely miami has spoiled me with some epic sushi. Oh savannah... If this is what you think is 4.5 star sushi is. You need to come to miami for 10 star sushi.

Growing up in Savannah, you know about Hirano's. It is THE PLACE to go for some good chicken terriyaki! Whether I go with one friend or five, Hirano's is always speedy and efficient with their service. The restaurant has seating or you could take out, but I recommend staying and grabbing a seat at the "bar" because you can watch the chefs cook all of the food on the grill. Don't forget to order the Gyoza - its DELICIOUS. My favorite part of this place is the shrimp sauce - a orange sauce that tastes good on just about everything. Fun Fact: John Travolta has a picture hanging at the front of the restaurant since he frequented here during a visit to Savannah!

Was really looking fwd to some good sushi and good teriyaki. Very disappointed. Fish was not fresh or good quality. The spider roll was burnt. The teriyaki was watered down. The Scallops were undercooked. Miso soup had no tofu. If you are like me looking for good food like there is in Hawaii this is not the place.

Despite the good reviews, I thought this place was pretty average. I got the chicken teriyaki and spicy tuna roll. The chicken teriyaki was just okay - the bean sprouts were a nice touch, and the spicy tuna roll was so plain and not spicy at all. Miso soup was good. All in all I'd come back because it's cheap Japanese that's not too shabby, but even sushi zen or wasabis downtown were better (in my opinion). We did get some hot sake and beer - gotta get Asian beer - and made our own sake bombs, which was awesome and not too expensive!

Yummy simple food that is fresh and tasty. Teriyaki meals are well portioned for great prices. Get extra veggies with less steamed rice for a healthy meal. The sushi is pretty good as well. Good meat and good temperature of the roll. The roe and cream cheese are quality. Their appetizers are great especially miso soup, fried dumplings and egg rolls. Great food at a great price. This restaurant seems like it has real roots here and it is apparent that they care about their service and the taste. This place also has great prices

Hirano's is one of my favorite places to go eat when we are in Savannah. The service is always fast and friendly even when they are busy. I ready a few negative reviews on the sushi here and I don't really agree. For the price you can't expect top quality sushi, however all of the sushi rolls and sashimi I have tried here have been pretty good and always tastes fresh. While the sushi is pretty good, the real reason I love coming here is the hibachi. I've tried most of the hibachi items and they are all good. I normally get the steak and shrimp, but the chicken and scallops are good too. The prices are super reasonable too. The shrimp sauce is really good and I always ask for extra to mix in with the fried rice, vegetables, and beef/shrimp. I really like this place and will definitely be back. I wish they had something similar to Hirano's in Atlanta.

Hirano's has very good sushi. We've also tried their egg rolls and steak teriyaki--everything is fresh-tasting and delicious. We've only ever done take-out but our experiences are solidly positive every time.

If you're looking for something fancy well this is definitely not it & that's not a knock against this place ! However if you're looking for something quick and filling then this is your place & it's not overly expensive . It will not cost and arm nor a leg to fill up an entire family , well in my case today that entails a family of one . The device is fast & the food is good for what you pay .

Lunch was wonderful, the waitress was lovely and accommodating of my mother who has a avocado allergy. The shrimp tempura was amazing, the nigiri was fresh and flavorful, the spicy tuna rolls were just on the right side of crunchy and spicy and the Tsunami rolls were refreshing. Overall this place is a little hidden gem. We loved it and will be back again.

A friend and I ate at Hirano's last evening. it is a combination Sushi and Hibachi. The food was just OK, not bad but I have had better sushi. the ambiance is like a dirty 50s diner. The lady wait staff that took our order was not very attentive. She took the order from the 2 of us seated at the table with some difficulty. The drinks including water and mixed drinks came in stages it seemed. Not everything came at the same time. Water glasses were not refilled as requested. the sushi over all was okay. The weird they had ceiling fans operating in the restaurant. these must have been add ons after they installed the canned lights. We felt light we were in a disco. it was distracting and would probably preclude me from ever going back. I felt like I was at a diner disco sushi bar that had no ambiance.

Been going to this place for about 12 years, and travel about 45 minutes to do so ( from Hilton head to savannah). They have fresh and honest sushi and sashimi. They're ginger dressing is made in house and is amazing! Everything about this place is great! I don't get to go often and have to settle for other places that are closer and it's never the same! You won't be disappointed!

Hirano's is good for Hibachi. My friends love the sushi but wish you could get the full menu in both rooms. I always order the chicken hibachi which you can see being made. Takeout always gets to you quickly and tastes fresh. It can get warm on the hibachi side, but that's somewhat to be expected. The $5 lunch special is also fantastic. They are quick and attentive and a great business for Habersham Village.

This place is known for their sushi, i wouldn't order anything else. The chefs that they hire are from Japan. If i was looking for Chinese food, I would expect a Chinese chef. If you order rice, chicken, and other combination on your plate expect to receive mediocre food. Prices range from $3-12 for 6 rolls, you can't find a better deal in Savannah. I invited my friends here, one of them loved it here. And well my other friend, ate all of my sushi, and said "she tasted better."

Tried this place after seeing it on Yelp. it was amazeballs! make sure you try the g5 roll and the eel roll. the G 500 is stuffed full a fish super fresh. had the shrimp teriyaki super fresh I gave you 4 stars because I'm used to my teriyaki sauce be a little bit on the sweeter is spicier side. I will be back!

Overall my experience here was really good. Fun atmosphere and great food, however the service was horrid. Our waitress was very passive and didn't make us feel very welcome. With that being said the food was great! I had the tempura roll, and it was delicious. I also had a egg roll. Very flavorful! My friends chicken teriyaki was not good, and the fried rice had little flavor. If you want sushi I would definitely go here!!

I can't say enough wonderful things about Hirano's. I spent many a Friday night here growing up and nothing has changed. Mr. Hirano still stands behind the grill fixing every order himself and the food is still the best deal in town! It is Hibachi just the way you'd expect it: over flowing brown or white rice, tons of chopped vegetables, any protein you want, and delicious "shrimp" sauce! Recently they've added sushi to the menu and i tis quite good as well. The prices are reasonable and they have a few combination specials. If you work in Midtown and are looking for a great lunch or dinner take out option, Hiranos is a no brainer!

This Sushi was amazing and the Happy Hour special was so cheap. I had the Mexican roll and the spicy tuna and both were probably some of the best sushi I've ever had and I've had a lot of different sushi.

Hiranos is the real deal! Great food, fresh sushi, great service and great value. Beck is a great sushi chef and nice guy to talk to. Would highly recommend this place.

Out on a business trip and decided to have some sushi. Mr. Hirano prepared some amazing dishes for me and was able to have some amazing conversation with me from behind the sushi bar. The fish was fresh and delectable. It was a great atmosphere with a friendly staff. Have to recommend the goyza as it was some of the best pork dumplings that I have ever had. Thanks again!

So, I just got back from the famed Hirano's and I have not had a worse service experience in a long, long time. Let me start off by saying that my boyfriend is from San Francisco and I am from New York City so our expectations for sushi are high, but we are aware of the fact that our cities are good food cities and so don't expect drop-dead amazing sushi everywhere. But one of our rolls here was just so bad and our subsequent experience when we (very politely!) said we did not care for it because it did not taste so fresh, was absolutely inexcusable. Before I get to the bad, I also have to say that the teriyaki chicken everyone raves about is totally worth the cheap price ($5.75!) and their seaweed salad along with their oshinko role was great (their eel was pretty delicious too). And, while the dressing on the salad deserves some accolades, I do have to say one negative thing: there was one inch, literally, of salad dressing on the bottom of our bowl when we finished. WAY overdressed. But we ordered a couple of spicy tuna roles (with cucumber) that just flat out were not fresh. Not only did they taste *incredibly* fishy, which tuna should not be, we could not see even a drop of "spicy" mayo anywhere and, of course, this meant that the chopped-up tuna had absolutely no hint of spice. So, this in and of itself isn't crazy. It is a Wednesday and they might get their fish deliveries on a Thursday or something, so we could have been on the back end, but ... we are on the coast ... and this place had rave reviews, so we were pretty disappointed and left the sushi where it was after having a few pieces just to make sure we didn't get a dud in the midst of some awesome sushi we would otherwise miss out on, but every bite we took was disgusting. I was actually afraid to eat it for fear that I would get food poisoning. So now to the terrible part that is making me write this review right now: our waiter comes over, a 16-year-old-looking kid who seemed like he had absolutely no idea what he was doing in a restaurant in the first place, and asks how our food was. We said everything was great except that we did not care for our spicy tuna roll because it did not taste very fresh. Before I could finish "fresh" he literally walked away to greet customers that came through the door. We were both just...aghast, like jaw-droppingly surprised because we weren't lodging a complaint (which we weren't going to do before this happened), HE had made the effort to come over and see how our food was and then WALKED AWAY as we were saying that we were not totally satisfied. He then proceeded to seat the waiting customers and walk by our table SEVEN times without saying anything or making eye contact with us. The eighth time he walked over, I said...so we never finished our conversation and you literally walked away while I was answering a question *you* asked. He looked at us and said "...oh, yeah, we got busy." My boyfriend and I looked at each other, even more surprised that he didn't apologize or offer to even finish the conversation. When we said nothing, he just gave us this weird blank stare and walked away AGAIN. Then a really kind waitress who had been picking up the slack for our teenage waiter asked us how our food was and we told her the same thing: (very politely) we said that we did not care for our tuna rolls because the tuna didn't seem fresh. She said, "oh, okay, sorry" and set the check down without offering to comp the rolls, without asking if there was anything she could get us instead, without maybe even explaining that perhaps Savannah tuna was different than regular tuna, which would be hilarious, but still! no effort to appease us at all. Absolutely the worst service I have ever experienced in my life. It was our 1 night in Savannah and we chose this restaurant. We now have a bad taste of Savannah in our mouths and in our minds and it is so unfortunate because we have had great food and met wonderful people, both in and out of restaurants, in other cities in the South and have to say we probably won't come back to Savannah anytime soon.

I am really surprised that, prior to my review, there was only one lone review of this gem. Hirano's is a small Japanese restaurant tucked away in a little shopping center in a quite neighborhood of Savannah. There's two dining rooms: one dedicated to hot food and one that is more for the sushi bar. You can be seated in either and order whatever, but obviously half the fun is sitting up at the sushi bar if you're inclined to order sushi. I've always had the sushi here and the fish is always very fresh and tasty. Some of the rolls are innovative, however most are pretty standard and simple which I like: I don't care for sushi being overdone and the chef trying to throw everything but the kitchen sink on a roll. The goyza (pork dumplings) here is also worth ordering and is a nice thing to have alongside your sushi. The only drawback to Hirano's is that the quarters are rather tight here and it's not at all the best place for large groups. That said, the waitstaff is very friendly and normally very prompt too. If you're up on this side of town, I can't think of a better place to have dinner.

Awesome! We ordered takeout. The older lady at the counter that takes your order is strictly business... Order your food, pay for your bill, and get out of the way! haha. we sat at the sushi bar and watched who i assumed to be Mr. Hirano himself make our dinner. Our food was cheap and DELICIOUS!! Such a great place for delicious, fast, and cheap Japanese food!! Go get some! ...and a spring roll too!

It really is. I grew up eating here and Mr. Hirano is a staple in Savannah. I eat there every time I go home, multiple times. I Love you Mr. Hirano!

Service was very good. Sushi was great. We had the Crunch roll and the California roll and loved them both. We ordered the Teryaki chicken because the earlier reviews said to and we were not that impressed. The chicken was good but the fried rice was no where near what we eat at our usual places. Definitely below par on the rice. But all in all was a good place to get some sushi.

Hirano's is a Savannah gem that has been around for at least 15 years. I haven't had a chance to try the sushi, but the dine in Hibachi lunch specials are great. You can usually get a lunch combo for $5 or so with chicken/pork/shrimp, veggies and rice. These deals are not valid for carry out:(

I was very disappointed in their sushi menu during lunch hours. Supposedly a sushi restaurant, and only 3 rolls tucked away on the appetizer menu? Ended up getting the spicy tuna roll and chicken teriyaki. The roll was small and quite plain, and since the fish was shredded I could barely be certain it actually was tuna. It had absolutely no spice whatsoever, but at least it did have a good, savory flavor. I can't say the same for the teriyaki. It was loaded with fresh vegetables, which was nice, but the chicken had very little flavor. I almost gave them 2 stars for the severely limited sushi menu, but at least what they had was made with decent ingredients and was cheap. Still, with mediocre teriyaki and barely enough sushi to warrant a visit when I have a craving, I doubt I'll go here again.

  • LovesToTravel L.

I've been going there for years, and the food is usually pretty good. I have never tried the sushi, only the hibachi. I love the fish and also the shrimp. The chicken sometimes ends up really dry. I also love the vegetables but the rice is just really plain. They get really busy during lunch, so get there early!

  • Miss M.

meh. just ok. not really vegetarian friendly. salad is depressing. green tea is weak, never felt so rushed to get me out. hibachi julienned zucchini, squash, onions, and shrooms with sprouts in a generic teriyaki glaze over white rice is literally all I can eat here.

Real Japanese Sushi, by real Nipponese. Try the Crunch Roll (not on the menu) shrimp tempura roll with secret ingredients. Sorry no beer or wine :-(

I have eaten sushi all over the world, this spot is a hit. Delicious, understated, amazing value, great service. I would go again and again if I lived in the area. Don't think, just go. Try the tuna salad, or anything on the menu for that matter. It is all wonderful.

Great little place for lunch. Great sushi. I had their spicy tuna roll and crunchy roll. Both were exquisite. I also wanted to be adventurous and try their squash roll.....yeah.. that was a no-go for me.

Like everybody else has pretty much already said, Hirano's is definitely a diamond in the rough kind of place. I live near downtown Savannah, and that being said, there are no shortages of sushi places around here, most pretty good with decent prices. I recently discovered Hirano's, however, and I must say, I would rather take the short drive out to Hirano's than eat sushi anywhere else. It's always super fresh (I never, ever worry about whether the fish is fresh here. It always is), the staff is friendly and polite, and the atmosphere is fun and casual. I highly recommend the spicy white tuna roll special because it's amazing. I'm now at Hirano's either dining in with a friend or getting take-out once a week. Best sushi in Savannah! Combine the best sushi in Savannah with a price that's easy on the wallet, and yep, I'm sold forever.

My other Fav place in Savannah. Love the sushi here. The staff is always nice and friendly. The kids love the teriyaki chicken! Must try the super Mexican roll it's not on the menu so ask & I'm not a fan of fried food in sushi, so you must try. Also the sashimi is very good and not to pricey. But I always get their spicy tuna roll its perfect!

  • James H.

Love this place. The owner still cooks awesome plates and will check in on you and how your doing and if there is more he could do for you. This place is very busy but keeps up with the demand. Love the quality of food here.

Seriously can't ask for more than Hiranos! Sushi is great, fresh, quick. Try the special white tuna roll-holy heck. Yum. Wonderful hibachi dinners at great prices. Recently moved to Savannah only a few blocks from Hiranos...and couldn't be happier. Walk in like you are a regular. Sushi bar is in a door to the left immediately after you walk in the front door. It's a hole in the wall type spot, but because they pay less in rent/decor WE pay less for great food. Enjoy!!

  • Steve A.

Great food at a great price. I've been to several other sushi places in Savannah and they're either pretty pricey or the quality is terrible. Hirano's is the perfect compromise, Sushi is great at a decent price and they're lunch special allows you to walk in and out for under $5.

Went for the first time for dinner with my husband. Service and food were great. Sushi was good not great (IMO) and a little on the expensive side for us. Will def be back. I had the chicken terryiaki which was great and my husband had various sushi rolls.

The real deal. Causal- friendly- fresh -reasonability priced.

The Spicy Tuna Rolls were really good, but the Teryaki Chicken was blah. We were passing through and saw many good recommendations for this place. Unfortunately all three of us had the same Chicken, so we can't really say what some of the other dishes might be like, but the chicken was definitely not worth even the low entree price ($6.00).

awesome inexpensive hibachi ... the teriyaki chicken with fried rice was SUPER YUMMY and very filling

I looooove Hirano's. This is where to go when you want quick, inexpensive, delicious Japanese food. I always try to come here whenever I'm in town visiting my family. The chicken or shrimp teriyaki with vegetables and steamed rice is my family's standard favorite, but I ordered the fish teriyaki last stop in since I'm on this whole "I'm going to save the chickens!" kick right now. The type of fish served was a mystery to me (kind of like the fish in fish sandwiches you'd get at a fast food place), but it was pretty tasty once I bathed it in shrimp sauce. One day I'll venture off of the teriyaki section of the menu and try something new.

I found this place while living in Savannah 7 years ago because my sister was a waitress here. She raved about how they made their sauces and how hard-working Mr.Hirano was. You will still see him cooking many days. Since Savannah I have moved - and eaten sushi- all across the US, from DC to NC to San Fran to San Diego and beyond. We finally moved back to GA and took a trip down to Savannah and of course HAD to go back to eat at Hirano's. It is even better than I remembered! THE BEST sushi I have had anywhere, at half the price I am used to paying. Presentation is also one of the best I have seen. My favorites are the seaweed salad, gyoza, and his eel is just so perfectly done. Try the Hirano's special roll. Everything is good, but I'm prego so I'm only allowed to eat the cooked stuff which usually bothers me but not here! The orange sauce is amazing too if you get something hot. Oh I ate there yesterday but am already craving it again today. Please Mr. Hirano can you open up 5 hours north of you in Canton????
