Went to Chuck's with friends on Saturday night of St. Patrick's weekend. The bar was not that busy but the bartender ( large guy with beard ... true asshole) had attitude and even threatened to throw us out if we continued acting gay ... REALLY! He is gay himself. We kissed a friend when he came in to the bar. I do that with my straight friends as well. CHUCK'S is not Gay nor Gay friendly. Come on folks wake up and let this dive die slowly without your money. Will never go back!

This bar has rebranded itself as an "alternative bar" (god forbid it should be called a "gay bar"), and it has a rule that two guys can't kiss one another inside. Um... excuse me??? This is a major step backward, and Savannah deserves better. What a DISGRACE.

After reading Michelle P's review, I felt I had to speak up for Chuck's. This bar is something of a rag-tag institution in the Savannah gay and college scenes, and reviewing it based on one single night that was a bit off is patently unfair. Besides, giving the bar one star when she admitted the bartender was in fact very nice? Can you really judge or blame a bar based on the whims of its other patrons? Michelle, next time I am in Silverlake, I will try to keep a more open mind before I judge YOUR bars. Chuck's is a gay-friendly dive bar located in an alleyway just off River Street in Savannah's historic district. The low prices of drinks here and the laid-back atmosphere have brought in loyal college students from SCAD plus a diverse crowd of both gay and straight local folk for years. Chuck (yes there really is such a man) and his sister Beth are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. For that matter, all their bartenders are very nice folks and have a good humor about running one of the best places to get flat-out drunk in the city. I have so many great memories here: I met for the first time two now ex-boyfriends at Chucks (not at the same instance though!) and I've met many other interesting folks here also. Chuck's has two pool tables and a dart board plus a juke box which is oft-fought over as onjoing battles between patrons over disco favorites and Reba standards duke it out. On the far side of the bar itself, towards the river, you have an array of ratty seating and a coffee table which appears to wander about the room (it's never in the same location twice) plus some board games (often there's two lesbians engaged in a game). The atmosphere is really hard to describe except to say it's dark, fun, junked-down, and everything you'd expect for a dive bar in the south. The only place in the historic district that can match Chuck's for true dive bar grit is Pinkie Master's, another fine establishment. On south-side (of the city, past Victory Drive) there's Shooter's on DeRenne Ave which is a pretty good though not at all gay establishment. The drinks? Cheeeeeap! But good, mostly, too: the Whiskey Sours are great, as are the White Russians. I know: I made out with quite possibly the hottest "straight" boy ever once here on the catalyst of White Russians. If you're gay (or not even), and tired of stuffy, snobby, clubs with $12 drinks, come down to Chuck's and you'll not be sorry you did. If you come with a good attitude, I can almost promise you'll even make a couple new friends. One word of true warning though: beware the steep stone stairs leading up from the River Street level where the bar is located to Bay Street above: these are original stone stairs that were designed for use when this was a shipping area, and they were probably NOT intended for much use in the dark of the night. They are VERY steep and can be quite dangerous, especially for tipsy women in heels. I have seen a couple larger gals take a tumble on these stairs, and even a ninja master could easily slip on them. These stairs looked just fine when you came trotting down them sober and the sun was still kinda out, sure, but now after all those mixed drinks and the shots your friend bought you and that Marine they're a real challenge to go back up, now aren't they?

Big fat bald bartender is an amazingly colossal assh@le. Some woman behind the bar getting drinks told us that she wouldn't serve us because she didn't work there?!?! Then told him to serve us and he looked right at us then continued to talk to some twink that he was obviously hitting on. BTW, there were nine people in the bar us (2), the girl who didn't work there, assh@le, twink and three straight girls. plus a high doorman.

Went here on a Tuesday night with 3 other people and were the only people there. So you would think the bartender would be happy to see people not the case here. He made it seem like it was a burden to get us 4 beers and to even talk with us.

I've heard this is Savannah's only gay bar, so I headed down the steps towards the river to check out the scene and I took my fag hag in tow with me. Kind of dirty bar (I'm the one that took that picture of the men's room -- yikes!), but hell: whattya want for a dive bar? The service was superb and the locals didn't harbor any attitude.

Was told to go there and after finding it, it wasnt event packed and we waited over 20 min and not bar staff said a word to help out. We just walked right back out and found a better place.

finally managed to come in and experience more than the bathroom. still keeping it at just ok. We were doing a loop and this was on the bottom tail of the loop. came in and quickly, and pleasantly, discovered that it was karaoke night..it was Saturday. the place was fairly dead. maybe 12 or so people? it's Saturday after all so pretty disappointing. anyways we put our name in the hat to sing and did our number. after we finished they played something over the radio while they found another victim to sing. well, i took the liberty to go keep singing. funny, right? the 'dj' found it a bit obnoxious and motioned me to get off the stage. i was just giving myself 20 secs more of fame while the other dude came up. just killed the fun of the whole experience and expected something douche like this from some uptight straight bar. gays, you fail.

Great dive gay bar. Lots of older men, but always feel comfortable here even though sometimes the bouncer can be a dick. Twenty dollar minimum on cards which sucks, highest in city but if youre looking for fun karaoke and older gays then hit this spot up. Get crazy on weekends.

I've been here 2 or 3 times, once during St. Patties day weekend. This was my favorite hang out spot on River Street. The bartenders are awesome, and very quick. The drinks are great and not overpriced, not to mention they pour heavy which is a plus. It's kinda small, but I always have a blast there, even if its packed.

Ummm... I don't know what night in hell I landed in here, but it was not a good one. I was seated at the bar between a man who was making animal noises (though funny as hell), and his x-lover and x-lover's new partner who teased him and started cat fighting with each other over and around me. I can see that everyone was welcome here, but given that I am not Gay, though I am Gay-friendly coming from progressive Los Angeles, I realized I was not in West Hollywood anymore. Yikes! Needless to say, I downed my drink, paid the very nice bartender and left in search of some better night life for me. I think Chuck and I are through.

wow, I miss Chuck's. Had so much fun there and can't wait to go back. To all of you WeHo types looking for some sort of "purely gay" experience, heed these words. Chuck's is by no means a gay bar. It is an oasis in the Dirty South aka the Bible Belt where gays and straights can get together for some no drama fun. I am straight and have pulled some nice skanky tail out of there many times. My gay pal MaMa has gotten balls deep in some redneck military ass plenty of times as well. Wow! A great locals hang out that is tourist friendly provided you are very open minded. Ask Chuck for a "merlut", which is absolut and merlot mixed. At the time I was living there, that would be the freebie they would give me when they were sick of me trying to mooch drinks off of everyone. Miss you all! EMily and Mike still there?

Chuck's is a fantastic bar. It's located right on the water in historic downtown and is dripping Savannah atmosphere. What an experience. Beth was friendly. Make sure you personalize a dollar bill to hang on the wall and leave your mark.

OK so first of all, when I was in there, the crowd was so varied, I couldn't tell it was even a gay bar, and I wouldn't care either way. I was there with people from my profession--we were at a conference at a hotel nearby--and I didn't know that you had to tip the bartender after very drink. AFTER. EVERY. DRINK. OR. ELSE. Where I'm from, you tip a bartender for doing a good job, or for doing something above the expected minimum. The fact is that this bar pours beers into tiny little plastic cups that are half the size of a real draft and charges the price of a real draft, and that's nothing to write home about. I asked for a second beer, and the bartender, a rather tubby man in a red checkered shirt, screamed at me, "ARE YOU GONNA TIP ME THIS TIME? 'CUZ I DON'T WORK FOR FREE!" I looked at him incredulously, and he said that if I kept looking at him this way--looking at him, not even saying anything!--he would have me thrown out. I left on my own accord. If he had told me civilly, or had someone else tell me, that I was not doing the right thing, I would have been mortified, and made it right. I, however, will not be bullied into anything, thankyouverymuch. I had just left a restaurant where I had tipped the waitress 25% FOR BEING REALLY NICE TO ME so I was angry that someone was trying to harass me into submitting to his little demands. I have a tip for this bartender: serve a real beer, in a glass. Don't scream at female patrons and use your height or your weight as a source of intimidation. Also, wear a shirt your size. So much for Chuck's.

I had a good time at Chuck's. Savannah is a nice place to visit, but the nightlife leaves a bit to be desired. This place was laid back and chill. It's in a historic building which always scores points with me... sort of an upscale dive (if there is such a thing). I recommend it.

After dealing with the death of my grandmother ...I decided take my siblings out for a drink.... just get away from the family for a bit. This place is small, quaint, and just cute.... !!! Try the Isabel, drink quite refreshing

I discovered this bar by accident and have been a couple times. Great laid back and open place where everyone can have a good time and be themselves. I brought my wife for karaoke when we visited Savannah :)
