Best Mexican food if your in the heart of downtown...always seems to be packed so they obviusly have a following (or its partially due to the good location). Avoid the Bloody Mary (apparently their recipe requires half lime juice...grin)...but then again I wouldn't expect that Bloody Marys are ordered much in a Mexican Restaurant setting...

My first trip may have been a bit biased: Cinco de Mayo is the best time to visit a restaurant for margaritas. Even though that was why I initially came in, their awesome specials kept me there for lunch. The atmosphere was so fun and light-hearted. For $5, I got three tacos, and of course they had drink specials. By the end of lunch, I was singing show tunes with the wait staff. I don't know if this is a good thing or not, but this place has a nice spot in my heart from now on.

Yknow... it's a mexican restaurant. Not as good as Juarez and filled with people who live in Turner but it's alright.

Pretty decent Mexican food at good prices. This is my favorite place to grab Mexican food, I recommend the carne asada soft tacos with some cheese dip for the chips on the table. They have some great sweet tea and margaritas, even a monster margarita that will take 4 or 5 people to drink.

Best Mexican food I've had in Savannah! We first had the fried jalapenos. The portion was huge and they were amazing. Then we got fajitas! Huge portion, cooked perfectly! Could NOT have been happier! I can't wait to go back to sip on a margarita! :)

I eat here for lunch fairly regularly, and they have good serviceable Mexican food. The dishes I've tried include taquitos, enchiladas, and their fajitas (chicken normally in each case) all being pretty consistently good. Their lunch fajitas serving is quite large, particularly in comparison to what Jalapeno's serves. The service is good, and even if they have a full house they seem to be able to handle it pretty well. The decor is festive if a bit dark. Cleanliness always seems to be pretty good. If you use the restrooms make special note of the lively music playing in the kitchen nearby.

This is not tasty food. I still can't figure out why it's so popular. Proximity to SCAD dorms, the fact that several years ago they were pretty lax on carding (no longer the case) I suppose help it out. But when it comes right down to it, the food just isn't good. It's hard to mess up chips and salsa before a meal, but they routinely manage it. Most dishes come slathered in some indefinable 'red sauce' similar to campbell's tomato soup, and devoid of much flavor. The meats are bland and tough, and service is spotty at best. Skip this place, and head down to Juarez or T-Rex Mex if you absolutely have to have Mexican food in Savannah.

I have been there several times and last night I was so let down, that is why they got a second star. I came very close to walking out on my tab. We were there for 2.5 hours. Yeah at a mexican resturant, WTF? The food was fine, but really where is there bad mexican food? Our waiter was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SLOWWWWWWW that we just couldn't get him to do anything right. He said some strange things to us too. He would disapear for long periods of time and then would only do something quick and be gone again. I finally had to demand my bill and asked if I should just give him my card to run it or bring it to a cashier up front. I was not pleased with my experience.

Can I give a place zero stars? Unfortunately, not. Carlito's definitely deserves zero stars. In any real city, not a town like Savannah where people are scrounging to find decent places to eat, a place like this with abysmal food, bad service, and both a very sad location and atmosphere, could not survive. I don't care how cheap tacos are on Tuesdays! The lettuce is still wilted, the tomatoes rotten, and the meat of uncertain origins. Disgusting! For clueless SCAD freshmen from the mid-west with no idea what Mexican food tastes like, only!

I went here, the food was crap but two women got in a fight and a flip flop flew across the restaurant. The cops came, then in the bathroom the waitress said something racist, which is not that surprising in Savannah. It's sad, but most people here are racist. :-(

You have to know that I am from Southern California and I am used to a slightly more authentic Mexican food than Carlito's. There is definitely something lost in translation here. The food is okay, but like Acapulco or some other Mexican chain restaurant. It's definitely not as bad as fast food "Mexican" (I can't really consider Taco Bell to be even near to Mexican food). It leaves me longing for Tacos Por Favor or Tlapazola in good ole sunny LA.

This was an excellent place to eat. One caution: Be careful of the margarita! They are POTENT! Well worth the stop. Excellent food, drinks and atmosphere.

their vegetarian options suck. my plate was just a bunch of bland slop with no fresh lettuce or tomatoes. they forgot 3 things that i ordered. my meat-eating friends really enjoyed their meals though. i just had bad luck i suppose.

So disappointed. I have had okay Mexican food here as long as I stick to the combo plates but last night my friend and I ordered two "specialties". First thing a basket of tortilla chips were placed on the table and after one bite, we both spit them out - they reeked of old oil and were dark brown in color and the taste was bitter. When we mentioned it to the waiter he was very kind, nodded his head and immediately replaced it with a basket of fresh chips which were the right color and tasted good. I hate to complain about this place as I have always had a great experience with the wait staff and enjoyed Taco Tuesday and yes their Margaritas are huge. However, the quality of the food when served was a major disappointment - we ended up just picking at the plates and I don't know why but asked for "to go" containers. Not one item on the plates tasted any different from the other. When we got home, we both decided that we were not going to revisit that meal again and threw both containers away. First thing this morning, my friend called and said "I don't think I am going to eat at Carlito's again" and my answer was "I have been thinking the same thing".

This is real Mexican cuisine. The food was amazing at a very reasonable price. Our margarita were huge!!! The kitchen manager even came out and made us our own salsa. Yummy.

I'm nowhere near a Mexican food connoisseur as much as one might think growing up in Southern California might make me. I liked this place, the cheese sauce was superb but I felt it was lacking a little something. The margaritas taste like they used as little alcohol as they could get away with and still card you for it. The prices are good though so really, I suppose you are getting what you are paying for. For being out of the way a bit, one would think they'd go a bit more out of their way to get people to do the same.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
