Before there was such a thing as Zaxby's, you had to go to Guthrie's to satisfy your fix for Chicken Fingers . Specifically chicken fingers served by a certain fast food place that specializes in them and also includes the signature ketchup - mayo - black pepper "special" sauce, plus perfectly executed Texas Toast and crinkle cut fries. The bad part was that you had to drive to a nearby college town to get your fix. But in recent years that has changed mostly because of to Zaxby's. The first time I ever had Guthrie's Chicken Fingers was when I was a freshman at Auburn. A year later when I transferred to UGA and I was delighted to discover that Athens, GA also had Guthrie's - but in a location that was very close to campus. I later learned that Guthrie's had been around since 1965 and I think the restaurant got its start in Athens, before expanding onto other college town across the Southeast. I prefer Guthrie's over Zaxby's mainly because I think the food is better and is less corporate sanitized. Another reason I like Guthrie's over Zaxby's is because I believe Zaxby's appropriated (stole?) Guthrie's whole business operating plan / concept . Rumor has it that the guy who started Zaxby's in Statesboro, GA once had worked at the Guthrie's Athens , GA location. Unlike Guthrie's, Zaxby's decided to go big early on rather than remain small. I will admit that Zaxby's has done a really great job of expanding into major markets and / or having locations set up everywhere. And I also have to admit that I like Zaxby's TV commercials with their B-list celebrity endorsements. Guthries, for the most part, has remained content to stay small scale in having locations only / mostly in college towns. After awhile, I think after seeing what Zaxby's had done with the chicken finger restaurant concept, Guthries decided it was time to expand into bigger markets; however, perhaps by that point it was too late. Zaxby's seems to have garnered the lion's share of the market in the fast (cheap but good) chicken finger restaurant game. Bottom line: I give Guthrie's four stars and Zaxby's three stars.

This isn't how I remembered when I was in middle school... The fries are horrible cardboard sticks. The chicken is good because it's not too salty. I'll stick with Zaxby's.

I have been to this location numerous times, and I have yet not felt disappointed!! We really like their crispy juicy ck fingers. The toast and coleslaw are good too! Not much to complain about except it didn't come with drinks. Still glad we found this lil gem in otp norcross area.

I was out for the usual workday lunch & thinking about going to Zaxby's. Instead I decided to try Gurhries for which I had heard mixed reviews but thought, chicken tenders & fries, there's no way this can be messed up. Look at the photo is all I can say...just wait for it......seriously? Imagine my grown @$$ when I sat down at my desk & opened my plate of food. Mind you I wasn't expecting the entire breast but the tenders (which are weighed per the owner Hank @ the location in Norcross off Holcomb Bridge) looked like nuggets. I couldn't make this 'ish up. Just look at the photo. Hank also added that depending on the time of year they can be small or big so they through in an extra one when they're small & take a loss when they're big. Service was great & it didn't taste bad but for 6 nuggets, fries, & toast for $7 doesn't cut it.

We drove 10 miles on our lunch hour to try Guthrie's after a co-worker proclaimed them better than Zaxby's. On a taste level I'd have to say that the food was in fact very tasty. The fingers and the cole slaw was very good. The fries are good but I missed the seasoning. On another note, I'm concerned that whoever management or owner's are seem a bit very concerned with the bottom line ($). The sign outside about the $5.99 meal is misleading (seems to include a 20 oz drink when it only includes it after 5 p.m.) but I suppose that's no crime in business. What does seem like a crime in my eyes is the fact that the cashier held back the receipt, when I did receive it I realized I was charged $.20 for water. Listen, $.20 is no big deal but I just bought a meal from you and brought my co-workers here which means more business for them. I think that charging someone for something that is clearly free to you and not telling them speaks volume about the business. As I said, I enjoyed the food but it didn't sit well in my or my co-workers' stomachs; maybe it was the greasy food.... hopefully it wasn't that Guthrie's Norcross also tries to make a some additional cash by means of unethical food related decisions :o/

I'm eating a chicken tender box right now. What is this wierd crap I'm dipping the chicken in? I don't know, but I like it. Guthrie's chicken tenders is ALMOST as good as Chik-your-way. Yum.

I had Guthrie's for lunch today. Being new to Atlanta, I had no idea what this place was, I was just temping down the street and looking for a place to get a quick bite. I thought the chicken and the sauce were pretty good. The chicken was juicy and not overly breaded. I did not really care for the fries, but they did give me a large portion. I don't think I would make a special trip Guthrie's, but if I was in the area, I would come here again.

it's a good thing I don't live anywhere near Guthrie's, because I'd probably eat there 3 times a week. I lived down the street from the one in Athens in college, and that's what happened there. We were a bit saddened to see them shut down when visiting in the past few years, but to be honest it always seemed like the type of business where no one gives a crap about whether it succeeds or not. My theory is that Guthrie's was run by the same type of pothead fratboys that worked at the place, and they had no ambition to grow the business. Then, a few years later the pot haze cleared and they saw how successful Zaxby's had become, and decided to resurrect the business and expand. Hopefully the people in charge now have some sense and will follow through. The food is great. I actually like the chicken better than Zaxby's - it's not as salty, and seems to be juicier. Your digestive system may not like you once you've finished your meal here (or Zaxby's for that matter) but your tongue will be very happy. The only suggestion I have at this point is this: the color "yellowy beige" totally sucks, and you should abandon it for something richer looking. From the outside, Zaxby's looks way more high-class than Guthries. Keep it simple, ditch the cafeteria colors, and start marketing and expanding. I'd love to have to restrain myself from driving to a location nearby too often.

I had the grilled chicken sandwich and it was just ok. I felt like I got cheated on the chicken because it was sliced and wasn't a whole chicken breast. I'm not really a fan of crinkled fries, but the sauce was good!

The food is great and I use to go a lot in high school butter few times I have gone since being back in norcross I have had terribly rude service. It's a shame.

Why has it taken me so long to visit this place? Well, now I can add it to my favorites. I know that I am totally about to receive so much hate for this comment but Guthries is better than Chic-Fil-A and Zaxby's.... especially Zaxby's which is more comparable. Chic-Fil-A has a broader menu to choose from. That being said, these chicken tenders and special sauce rock! It's a bit greasy but that just warms your heart, right?

Portions have shrunk a bit, but it's always very fresh. Way better then Zaxby's, albeit with a smaller menu. Sad they got rid of sweet potato fries.

Way better than those other guys...Zaxby's! The food is always freshly made, the staff always greet me by name and amazingly remembers and knows exactly what I want to order! I give them 2 thumbs up only because I don't have 3!

Moved to this area a couple months ago and heard good things about Guthrie's, so I thought I would try it. Their 'famous' sweet tea I could not try because they were out. How does that happen? I got the take-out box, which was supposed to have 5 tenders, but when I got home, I only had 4. Fries, toast, and cole-slaw were decent, but disappointed in size of tenders and missing one in my order (and no sweet tea!). I will say their dipping sauce is delicious! Would definitely have given them 5 stars if I got what I ordered!

I heard Guthrie's was the original Zaxby's (not this location, obviously). This is no Zaxby's. The interior looks like it's 15 years old and it's illogically laid out. You walk in and there's a counter off in the distance. The employees are nice and usually call you over. I think I went wrong ordering the pita wrap. It was based solely on a recommendation from someone who works there and she was wrong. Nice try, but not good.

It's like Zaxby's only clean! And with good customer service. Clean tables, nice-layout and super friendly staff @ this location. I personally LOVE the chicken pita wrap and it's my standard order here. Food is always hot, tastes good and is cooked to order. I personally prefer Guthrie's to Zaxby's based on the customer service experience alone.

Not as good as Zaxby's. Got shorted on the chicken on my salad, should have been three, only got two- my husband got a plate, should have been give, only got four! Won't bother going there again.

The original, and still beats the hell out of Zaxby's
