We want to watch a friend's band play. Really nice local band venue. The drinks were good and the staff was very friendly. We didn't try the food because the kitchen was closed when we arrived. They do have a dance floor and clean restrooms. Nice spot for a late drink and good music.

What a waste of a prime location! My little brother came to visit me so I wanted to show him a good time in Marietta square! He had never been to Atlanta before so I was hoping to show him a part of the city that he would enjoy. There was a looooong wait at our restaurant, so we decided to get an appetizer and drink at Hemingway's. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! Our server immediately informed us that it would be at least a 20 minute wait for food. We ordered a couple of beers... ($5 for a bottle of bud light....) and wanted chips and salsa - but he said it would be 20 minutes even for that! The bar wasn't even packed. I have no idea what was going on but it is such a shame that this place has a prime spot on the square. THERE IS SO MUCH WASTED POTENTIAL. The interior was depressing. Definitely needs a makeover- staff, decor, layout, menu, prices - all wrong! I hope Bar Rescue comes for a visit! I also was really confused by the name! Hemingway's made me think the ambiance would be somewhat charming - nice lighting, fun menu, good cocktails - but no. This was straight up funk. It might be a nice outing if you just were released from prison, but if you've been living in the outside world for the past decade, you know that is just a waste of a great space! And grossly overpriced.

The food is below par. The only thing this bar has going for it - is the outside sitting area. The wait staff is awful. I can not recommend this place.

I enjoyed my time with my daughter and my fur child! (My Morkie) we really enjoyed ourselves on the porch and the food was so yummy! They brought a bone to my puppy and a bowl of water. She was so happy! It was absolutely perfect! Oh the food was delicious and the service was so sweet!

The food was bland and had no flavor. The servers didn't seem to care about the dissatisfaction of the food and just replied with an "oh really?" When told the food was bad. This place is now on my "not going there again" list.

This place does not deserve to call itself a restaurant. The service is poor, the food is poor, and the owner is rude. If you like stale and/or canned food, go here. If not, save yourself some frustration and visit any other restaurant on the square.

One star for the view! Hemingway's recently reopened as a smoke free restaurant/bar. Too bad they did not work on their waitstaff or kitchen in the process to become more family friendly! Slow service and cold food.

NOT NOT impressed by styrofoam plates. Really. Cuban sandwich is not toasted, it is supposed to be fresh crisp Cuban bread. Service not bad Manhattan was good. I prefer shillings across the road. I'm updating. The waitress followed us out of the restaurant and questioned our tip! Say what!. She had the audacity to say that the tip us usually 20% not 10% I for one will never go back.

Since Tsunami had a 45 minute wait we decided to pop over to Hemingway's and see if the cleaning had done anything for the place. You know that old saying about shining up a turd... Prime example. While the interior looks much better than it had previously, it's still cheap and outdated. We ordered drinks and looked over the menu. We closed the menus and started to talk. After five minutes or so no one came for our order. We waited a few more minutes, put some money on the table for my tea, and headed back to Tsunami. Luckily we only had ten minutes to wait, and are already enjoying an appetizer. Evolve or die is the saying. Hopefully the owners will figure this out and bring the restaurant up to par with the majority of restaurants in the square.

Nice atmosphere . We sat outside and listening to the live music while people watching. We weren't too hungry so ordered nachos and chicken strips. Nachos were stale. Cheese was bland and watery. Strips were good.

Styrofoam and plastic cutlery. All of the food screams "lazy kitchen". (E.g. Ice cold marinara with calamari.) Been here many times little change in quality. (Grew up here in Church st.) Staff is always friendly and eager to please. Great place for drinks with music and friends. Sorry, just not a good place for food.

Took a client there for lunch on Halloween. I ordered a Mahi sandwich. The cost was somewhere around $9.00. The nice waitress asked me if I wanted fries with it. I asked her what came with the sandwich and she said nothing. Normally I like to get something else in lieu of fries. Well I thought hell this must be a great sandwich then. My mahi sandwich finally came out and it was literally swallowed up my the bun. The piece of fish, I estimate was 2"x3". It was tiny and I say was 1/4" thick. The taste was mediocre and I left the table and restaurant disappointed, hungry and a little poorer. My gut is that they are in financial trouble... If they do not turn around their quality I think they will be closed by the end of the year. Sadly I will never know because they just lost 2 customers forever.

Stopped in for a quick bite. Our sever Brandie was an all star. Quick service and extremely personable. Please ask for her next time you pop in. And the Bloody Mary with pickle juice.

It was nice to sit outside and enjoy the early Sunday afternoon sunshine. The beer was cold. The place is old school (but it fit for Hemingway). The food was adequate, but the service was great. Go with the chili and not the chowder. Stick with the basic pub food - burgers, sloppy joes, etc. - and you'll enjoy it.

Always a favorite, but last night was extra special. Our dinners were delicious. I had crab cakes and my husband got a salad. The crab cakes were easily two of the best I've ever had. The band was phenomenal. The service was great.

A smoky bar on the Square. Had I know it was smoky, we wouldn't have stopped in that night. But I was getting really hungry and their menu looked good. So, like I said, this is a smoking-friendly bar, which is something a non-smoker doesn't like to be around. Should have known that when I read the 18+ notice at the front door, but it didn't register until someone lit up next to me (after putting in a drink order). Next time I'll pass. The drinks were good- the bartender whipped up something fruity for my indecisive mood and it hit the spot. We ordered BBQ wings and the bacon-wrapped tenders. Both were okay, nothing to rave about. Also, served on a paper plate, which I think is tacky. Thankfully my drink was in a real glass. In sum: if you're looking for a place to smoke and drink while listening to live music, this is your place. Otherwise, keep circling the square or hit the grocery store on the way home for a frozen pizza.

Absolutely the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant and I'm the last person in the world to leave a review but I set this app up just so people would know NOT to eat here. Spent well over 100$ on food and alcohol and then was asked to be "accessed" by the manager on if we had to much to drink (we ordered four mimosas on a Sunday) because we had spent over 100$ dollars in alcohol. She even stated that there was no reason why she was doing what she was doing. Completely embarrassing and will never do business with the establishment again, and I will do my absolute best to tell everyone I know not to spend their money on this place.

Awesome patio....the ONLY thing this place has going for it. Spinach and artichoke dip...straight outta the microwave still in the purchased container. I enjoy some 80's music, but this is like listening to the credits of a bad 80's movie. Ordered 2 margaritas, at the same time, one was green, one was orange, both seemed to be missing the tequila.

My husband and I met another couple for dinner here on Friday night. I read the reviews before going in, so I was a bit skeptical. Our friends swore the place was good. I guess "good" is very subjective. When you first walk-in, you notice that it's a bit of a maze. You walk up a step, go around a table, down a step and through the bar area to get to a seat in the back. Sorry folks, no booths here. Just uncomfortably small tables with stiff chairs. Our server was okay. She greeted us, got us drinks promptly and tried her best to up-sell us. When the drinks arrived, I saw what all the other reviews were about. The Styrofoam cups. The food prices are on par with other chains like Chili's and Applebee's, but one thing is missing. Everything on their menu is a la cart. So no, your chicken fingers don't come with fries. Nor do your burgers, wraps or sandwiches. For fries, you have to shell out an additional $2.50. My husband ordered the bacon-wrapped chicken fingers appetizer as his dinner with a side of fries. I ordered the Southern salad that came with candied pecans, tomatoes and cranberries. People aren't kidding when they say everything is served on disposal plates. My husbands dinner arrived looking like someone a mother would make her 6 year old son. Chicken nugget. And the fries? The side of fries was served on another disposable plate looking like it came fresh out of an Ore-Ida bag. It was a literal handful of fries. For $2.50 I expect some decent hand-cut and seasoned fries. For $2.50 I could get double the fries at McDonald's. Absolutely pitiful. And my salad was a joke. The "bed of fresh greens" described on the menu translates to chopped wilted iceberg lettuce. The cranberries, pecans and single slice of tomato were served on the side of the plate - under the lettuce. All this cheap glory for $8.95. I'm not sure why our friends think this place is good - it's not. The food is sub-par and over priced. I'd rate the quality below fast food level. And the whole disposable thing completely turns me off. For a place that can afford their crazy decorations, top shelf liquor and live bands, I'm certain they can shell out a little for decent plates and silverware. Despite the cuteness of Marietta Square, this place sucks.

Visiting Georgia with my sister and the name of the place caught my eye. We were just leaving the farmers market and looking for a place to eat, so I suggested we pop in. Godawful decision. Much regret. Immediately upon entering, the feel of the place is really corny. We ordered water and received it in STYRAFOAM cups. Why?! I was especially upset by this because I just spent time in an extremely environmentally conscious Hostel, and to think of how many people they've served Styrofoam cups to is painful. Still, we ordered our food. When it arrived, it was on STYRAFOAM plates. What?! I felt really awful dining there. Watched the server clear our "dishes" and throw them directly in the trash. Lazy, lazy, lazy. I will never come back here.

There is something wrong with the management / owner here. He is angry and rude to people. Kicks people out often and not for typical bar and restaurant reasons. Basically if you don't like something, you can get the f out. . Just google it. It's his place and he can be the soup nazi if he wants but his food is not that good. Some of the staff is good and friendly others don't care. It seems to be kept clean. My wife and I ate there and he nachos were cold and chips were old. I found drink prices slightly higher than competitors in the area. I won't be back but after writing this he would likely ban me anyway. Lol

I most often visit Hemingway's on a Sunday afternoon. My dog and I like to head here after perusing the farmer's market. My review of the food is limited, as I normally order something very simple such as a salad or chips and spinach dip. Also, I have never dined indoors there. Salad has always been fresh, large enough portion to be filling. Perfectly good salad. Nothing super-special or stand-out about it, but tasty and satisfying. Chips and spinach dip is served with your choice of either chips or flour tortillas, or a combo of both. Both are good. The chips are the yellow, purple, and red ones. Spinach dip is tasty, but pretty much standard bar food spinach dip. I love it, but I'd love it just the same somewhere else. What I love about Hemingways is the outside area that allows doghead and I to chill, and the whole general atmosphere of that area. My servers have always, without exception, been friendly and attentive. They always bring my dog water and a milkbone when they bring my drink. They remember me from my frequent visits and even those who aren't currently waiting on us tend to stop by and say hello. On Sundays, there is live music consisting of a single musician singing mostly cover songs. The tables out there have umbrellas . There is a view of the foot traffic on the square on one side and the railroad tracks/trains on the other side. Even the fellow guests of Hemingways are generally friendly and pleasant. My Sunday time on the patio with my dog, a bloody mary, and a light bite to eat are priceless. Hemingways knows how to deliver a pleasant Sunday lunchtime.

Awesome place. Live band, great food. Just had the fish and chips. Very fresh crispy fish and ftirs with hush puppies. My wife had the taco salad with a crisp fresh edible taco bowl, sals and chiken with sauce all very gresh and tasty. Waitress gave fantastic service. Great place. Coning back again soon. They cant make a Ceaser though, but beer selection is good.

We came here spur of the moment during the week, as we were waiting for an appointment. What a waste of money... I'm actually surprised that a restaurant like this can still survive nowadays. I would think that people would expect more for the money they pay. So, what's wrong with this place? Let's start with Styrofoam cups, the food was served on plastic plates and.... to top it off, plastic silver ware. Seriously?!? I'm guessing they're trying to save on staff costs for dishwashers? It had a very odd airplane food feel to me. And this wasn't where the "cheapness" ended: Sandwiches don't come with any sides, sides cost extra and so do most of the toppings (like cheese). The water here is $0.25... for tap water!! The food: We ordered some wings... $7.95 for 6 wings, not that tasty, very heavily buttered. Southwestern Salad: some greens, some chopped tomatoes, canned corn and black beans, and dressing from the jar... the only thing more or less fresh were the few pieces of chicken. Again, the plastic plate cost $7.95. So, all in all we paid $25 for one soda, 6 wings, and a salad. For the same price, I can have a pretty decent meal for two elsewhere. So, next time you find yourself on the square. Skip this place. It's not worth your hard-earned money.

The most Dog Friendly Restaurant on the Square!! 5+ for this, but food/atmosphere is average. We have been coming to here for several years and it is our favorite place to sit outside with our dogs. Wide alley off the street allows for "private" dining with the tables spaced nicely. The owner Dave is very dog friendly and milk bones and water are brought out with the drinks. While he may not remember our names, he does know the name of our dogs :) I always order the buffalo chicken sandwich with fries (crinkle!) and am never disappointed. My husband enjoys the rice and beans and the Philly and Blackened Chicken Sandwich. They have live acoustic music outside on Sundays which is nice as well. If you are looking for good food, decent prices and a dog friendly patio come to Hemmingways. If you want "fine" indoor dining go elsewhere on the square. Note: We do not enjoy eating inside (hence the four stars) as it is a bar and pretty smoky (not judging but prefer not to eat in smoke).

The outside atmosphere is pretty nice here. And I didn't eat here, so I can't comment on that. However, I stopped here for a glass of wine with a friend while we were in town for a wedding, and felt it was WAY overpriced. Especially considering they only offer one (probably cheap) brand. The waiter actually came out and said "I think the purple one is yours" to me as he divvied out the glasses. Guess they don't have to learn anything about such things when they start. All in all, I just thought this place *sounded* like it would be a bit nicer than it was. The music inside sounded ridiculously loud, too. All that being said, I will say that a bunch of us came here after the wedding reception and had an awesome time... not sure I can say the place itself had anything to do with that. Also, be forewarned, they won't take card for anything under $10. A pain if you're only having a drink!

Got a burger and fries the first time. Burger was okay, fries were plain. I thought the burger came with fries, but once I got the bill I saw they were about $2.50 more. Second time I got the blackened Mahi Mahi sandwich. The seasoning was excellent, but the fish was weird. It was dry and scaley. There didn't seem to be much good meat on each portion of fish.

I have been a regular customer of restaurants on the Marietta square for months now. I will admit that, of all the dining options the square has to offer, Hemingway's has never been our first choice. As some of the other reviews have stated, the owners and management blatantly run the restaurant on the extreme side of cheap. Styrofoam and plastic are the standards for cups, plates, napkins, and utensils (regardless of the day or time). The food is also marginal and definitely overpriced for the quality and quantity you receive. However, I, and a regular group of friends have ended up there frequently due to their decent selection of draft beer and friendly servers, many of whom we know on a first name basis. This past weekend, I'm sorry to say, we had an experience that changed our opinion and desire to visit the restaurant ever again. One of my friends ordered the fish and chips and, upon receiving his order, was disappointed to see that the "chips" portion of the dish consisted of 5 thin, crinkle-style french fries (yes, we actually counted them) and two very small hush puppies. When our server returned, he politely asked if that was the normal portion and if so, would it be possible to have two additional hush puppies. The server apologized and said if he wanted extra hush puppies, he would have to order them from the "sides" section of the menu for an additional charge. He then reiterated that this was not a request, but a complaint about the lacking portion size and she sent over a manager. This brings me to the actual reason for my review. The manager, Amanda, came over and, as my friend was explaining his disappointment and request for additional hush puppies, interrupted him mid-sentence and said "we can't afford to give out any additional sides because it would cut into our profit margin and we would lose money on the dish". When he attempted to reply and say that two hush puppies couldn't be a serious threat to the profit margin of the dish, she again interrupted him and said "that is just how it's done at Hemingway's" and walked away. As I said before, we have always had a good experience with staff at Hemingway's, so when our server returned and asked if Amanda had been helpful we said "no" and explained what had happened. Given the condescending and completely rude nature of Amanda's response, we also informed the server that this would be our last visit to the restaurant. She was very apologetic and offered to relay our comments to Amanda. She did so, and we remained at our table for a while, but Amanda never returned. Having explained our experience and the reason for my review, I will simply say that I am most disappointed that this now limits our options for restaurants and places to meet friends on the square. We enjoy that part of our life in Marietta, but if hostility and rudeness are now the standard of managerial customer service, we will never return to Hemingway's. If finances are constrained to the point that two additional hush puppies ruin a dish's profitability, I'm certain I'm not the only one who sees a much larger problem.

I've come to Hemingway's on multiple occasions, always to celebrate a fellow server leaving the restaurant that I work at. With that said, most of us sitting at the table are servers so we understand when a server is busy or can't handle the table they are serving AND we can see when a server is judging us based on our age. Every single time we've come in the restaurant has been completely dead. The server rolls their eyes when we order our drinks and meals and then when they come to serve them they drop off the food/drinks and never return to the table....until the check. I find this rude, most of the time we're planning on giving them a great tip, because we know what it is like to serve large, ungrateful parties. The food isn't worth the price and neither are the drinks. Might as well go to Taco Mac.

I'm only giving Hemingways two stars because they have a dog friendly patio. Other than that.....thumbs down. I went there a couple of weeks ago with my mother for a late lunch, and I knew things were not going to go well when they served my mom her hot tea in a styrofoam cup! At least my glass of red wine came in an actual glass, but styrofoam? Really? I looked around and the few people who were there also had styrofoam cups. We first ordered their calamari appetizer, because my mom loves calamari, and also their soup and salad special, $5.99 with the purchase of a drink. We thought that was a pretty good deal. The calamari came out right away, (on a PLASTIC plate, with plastic utensils), and as soon as the waiter set it down I was sure something was not right with it because it smelled kind of off. Mom dug in right away, and said it was great, but I held off as our soup and salad came then, again served in plastic dishes. The salad and soup were okay, my soup was barely warm but edible and the salad typical green salad fare. I tried a couple of pieces of the Calamari, but it just didn't taste right. I told mom she shouldn't eat any more because I thought it might be spoiled, and she was okay with that since she had her soup and salad. She's quite elderly, and I was worried she would get food poisoning. It took forever to get our server back to the table, where I asked him to warm up my soup, and told him about the Calamari. He apologized, and I hoped he would take it off the bill, but he didn't. All the servers, about 5 of them for only two or three customers in the restaurant, spent almost the whole time we were there chatting together at the back of the restaurant and I literally had to stand up and wave at them to get their attention. Hemingways isn't a fast food restaurant, it's an on the Marietta Square full service establishment, and should reflect that with proper service and serving ware. This was really bad form for a restaurant, and dog friendly or not, I doubt I'll be back for another visit. There are much better restaurants on the square who deserve my business.

The only good thing about this place is the location. Smack in the middle of the Marietta Square and with an awesome patio, the food tastes like it was pulled from the freezer, thrown in the fryer and dumped onto the plastic plates and baskets. They allow smoking inside so it's either sit outside or smell like an ashtray. The service is decent but does not make up for the food.

This place is an embarrassment to the Marietta square. It's in a prime location, and definitely falls waaay short of the quality I'd expect based on that information. The outside looks nice enough. So does the inside, for that matter, but then you see it: the styrofoam cups, the plasticware utensiles, the plastic plates. If I was at a food truck, this wouldn't be a problem, but for an established restaurant in the Marietta square, seriously? At some point you'd imagine it'd be cheaper for them to just invest in some actual plates than to keep buying all that plastic. On top of the off-putting choice of serve-ware, my husband and I sat down, put in drink orders, and then waited close to 30 minutes for anyone to come check on us again. We had a show to get to at this point, so we didn't have time to wait for a full meal. We decided to order a couple of appetizers and eat again after the show if we were still hungry. We ordered the crab and artichoke dip, the calamari, and the empanadas. Despite the fact that it was probably bought, microwaved, and served in the same plastic container, the crab dip was not half bad. The calamari was chewy and almost definitely frozen, and the empanadas were served with generic packs of "taco sauce". If I'm paying $6 for two (tasteless) pieces of food, the least you can do is open the packets and put the sauce in a container to give the ILLUSION of some form of class. On top of that, we get our bill and two drinks and three apps later, our total including tip was $61. The drinks alone (we each got a cocktail) were $7.50 and served in tiny plastic cups. I might as well have just flushed that money down the toilet. I rarely, if ever, have given one star reviews, but there was absolutely nothing redeeming about Hemingway's other than it's cool-ass name and decor, which is ultimately just a facade to cover how bad everything else about it is. It's obvious the owners have just stopped caring altogether. I feel awful for saying this, but Hemingway's needs to close down so someone who actually cares about their restaurant can take advantage of their wonderful location.

I had the blackened mahi mahi with fries. The mahi mahi was really good. The fries, very generic. I went at a very slow time, so the service was quick. The chairs were very uncomfortable and wobbly. Maybe so people won't stay long. I will probably go back, because I can't say that I don't like the place after only one meal.

Bar food with a bar atmosphere...just what we were looking for on a Saturday afternoon. Hemingway's has a great patio area that catches the sun for most of the afternoon. We had the crab cake appetizer, which was delish...and the blackened mahi mahi with sweet plantains. The fish and plantains were both perfectly cooked and wonderfully seasoned. A nice large portion size allowed us to split our meal and still feel full. When I popped in for a restroom break, the bar seemed hopping with people enjoying the warm afternoon. I can just image what the night life would bring.

This isn't the best quality bar food, but it's descent and besides, I love the location. Just blocks from my home, I can go with my husband and have a fun night out and not have to worry about driving home.

It's funny because I don't think Hemingway's has changed much since Blake B. reviewed them in 2007. It's kind of a sad place - I like the fans, I can say that much. They're sort of vintage-y, iron with lights. We had lunch on a Saturday at noon. My boyfriend was STARVING - I had enough time before he freaked out to choose between this and pizza and I really wasn't in the mood for pizza. The place was dead as disco and kind of dark, so we sat by the window for some life. Someone came to get our drink order.. she took it and walked away. A second girl came over to take our drink order and pulled out her notepad like she was our waitress. When we told her our drink order was taken, she said, "oh okay!" and walked away. Then a third woman came over and took our food order. She's an older woman with short hair and she doesn't seem to smile much. She was nice, but the way she acted, I felt like I was constantly about to offend her, for some reason. Maybe it's just me! The food was really good, actually. I would totally order it again - French Dip and Fried Plantains for me. Bacon Cheeseburger and Sweet Potato Fries for my boyfriend. We liked it all. Nothing super special - nothing better than anywhere else - but we ate it all and were satisfied. At one point, a mother and young daughter (maybe about 6) walked in... and they were turned away because Hemingway's is 18+. They were told they could sit outside instead, but it was a bit hot so I think they decided to go elsewhere. I understand how and why bars do that, but I think Hemingway's may want to reconsider at least during the day if that's a possibility since they're in a family-oriented area. (The next day I was back at the square passing by - not a patron of H that day - and saw another family with two young kids go through the same thing.) I'd probably still go back if I was already at the square and looking to sit outside with a drink to people watch or listen to a band (since they often have bands inside or out). I wouldn't go out of my way though. I wanted to give it 3-stars because it's not a terrible place but the two star description is really more accurate. "Meh. I've experienced better." 3 Stars for "A-OK" Food 2 Stars for "Meh" Atmosphere 2 Stars for "Meh" service

    (2)
  • Justin W.

Strange mix with the menu. Nothing special, typical bar food. Atmosphere is really cool and they do have a nice outside seating area. I have been here twice now in one year. Service is descent at best. Food is served on styrofoam plates, plastic utensils and plastic cups for beer.

This place has a Buffety feel to it. Although I have only been once, and got there 45 minutes before last call, it is a place I will be going back to get the full experience. The only drawback is that they are not allowed to have drink specials, per Cobb county law. Fail, Cobb county. Also, they have a stage for a live band, which by the layout of the bar, you can't help but be pretty much front row.

Like literature from the great writer himself, Hemingway's is not for the faint of heart. There's a fantastic quote from "The Sun Also Rises" which one character says to the other "You know it makes one feel rather good deciding not to be a bitch." Take that attitude while dining at Hemingway's and enjoy the experience. Hemingway's is my favorite tavern with a patio in Marietta. Over the years I've stopped by when I've been OTP with Mama and my dogs. This place allows pups which is always a huge plus. On sunny days in the South, I love hanging out on the patio with a cold draft of Sweetwater and a puppy at my feet. Most of the time, Mom and I share some appetizers. The spinach and artichoke dip is really just queso with veggies but my goodness it's so tasty. Their fried oysters are on point, as are the burgers and sandwiches. I've had the key lime pie for dessert, which is tasty, but for my sweet tooth I prefer Mamie's cupcakes down the block. Today, our server was Amy and after working a triple shift this weekend she still was very pleasant. After reading some of the other reviews on here, while the serving team may appear surly, it's only because some of the staff are channeling their inner Hemingway. Charm your server, smile, be polite, and I promise they will warm up and be prompt with your requests for refills. They've got a tough gig with all the tourists checking out downtown. Also, If you're a smoker, this is one of the few spots in Cobb County which allows y'all to puff up. I've never had an issue with it but just wanted to forewarn the non-smokers out there. Hemingway enjoyed his cigars so the joint allows guests to do the same. To end this with review with my favorite Hemingway quote from the end of "The Sun Also Rises" when Brett (a girl) says to Jake: "We could have had such a damned good time together." and he replies "Yes, isn't it pretty to think so." Well, I always have a pretty damn good time when I go to Hemingway's. Take your dog, drink a pint, order some fried food and y'all will too.

We decided to give this place a try, epic fail! We drove around the square for close to 40 min. finally found a spot and were seated in the bar......./ restaurant right away. I ordered the mahi mahi and it was served on a styrofoam plate with plastic silverware. I just kinda figured place on the square little upscale ummmmm I was mistaken. Hubby got the Cuban sandwich another disappointment. Hot/cold was listed as hot.....microwaved for sure!! We finally told the waitress were dissatisfied and she was so offended and rude it was unbelievable. Did I mention this was on valentines day?!?! I didn't expect five star but I also didn't expect this bad of food as well as poor service. save yourself the trip, I'm telling ya!! Bad.

We decided to have our family dinner before the Marietta Homecoming Game at Henningway's. A few bites into my husband's Cobb Salad he found a baby roach crawling out from underneath his lettuce. We politely called our server over (who was VERY NICE), pointed out the roach and she went to notify the manager. The manager appeared with the salad in hand and definitely did not care about our friendly roach. She proceeded to tell us that because we were eating outside we as customers couldn't prove that the roach didn't fly into his salad and bury itself underneath his lettuce (although this baby roach had no wings) for my husband to almost eat. She then took his salad and I gave her my 95% untouched salad and she had the server bring us our $38 bill. :-) The manager never offered ANY solutions. My husband NEVER complains! Let me repeat...my husband NEVER complains. He didn't even complain when the manager still had him pay our entire bill even with us still leaving the restaurant with the exact same empty stomachs we came with. As we told the manager tonight (which she had absolutely nothing to say back) we will NEVER be back to dine at Hemmingway's Bar and Grill and with how much I love the internet and social media, I will make sure I let everyone know who asks where to dine in the Marietta Square exactly what we think of Hemmingway's (more specifically the management) and our very first experience at this let down of a restaurant in the beautiful Marietta Square. I started by letting a couple know outside the restaurant as we were leaving. They thanked us and made their way to another place to eat. A word of advice, sometimes a customer just wants to be heard. It wasn't about the roach (many restaurants have them!) it wasn't about the "comping" of our bill or lack there of. Our frustration as customers comes from feeling like the person we are talking to thinks we are lying and feeling like we are not being heard. As management, you should ALWAYS LISTEN and TRY to satisfy the customer the best way possible. One unsatisfied customers voice is like 1000 satisfied ones. It's just not worth it.

It has great potential as the location and patio are great. But they need to decide if they want to be a restaurant or not. The first tip off should have been the all plastic table settings. No one, except at a picnic, should have to eat from a Styrofoam plate. The food, however, didn't deserve much better. The recommended Fish and Chips came as a hard slab of tasteless previously frozen fish with fries. Remember those mealy, machine cut , tasteless ,identical potato pieces you got at the church fair? Yea, same ones. Add two marble sized (and tasting) bread balls as "hush puppies" and you basically have paid three times the cost of a mediocre fast food meal. Bon Appetit! (oh yea, if any managers read this- have the ladies room cleaned!)

Always a good time! Now, don't go to Hemingway's for a quiet romantic, evening, or if you want cloth napkins and fine china (they use plastic cups and silverware!). But do go if you want a fun time! Some friends and I all needed a fun night out, we had a FABUOUS, energetic, attentive waitress, good eats and loved the band Jessie's Girl. Great pub food! I had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, with fries, and shared some yummy potato skins with friend. My other friends had shrimp and the black bean soup. All were happy with their food and my sandwich was huge, I could not eat it all.

Some days it deserves a 2-star, some days a three...dont think I would ever rate it higher. I cant handle the place in the late evening...too crowded and too noisy and the bands are usually too loud for the size of the place. unlike most reviewers, we have never had an issue with the service. However, if you like your drinks so strong you get crosseyed after one "tall," then this is the place for you. However, I hate drinking out of Thin, flimsy plastic and that is what your drinks are served in. If the weather is nice, definitely sit OUTSIDE...believe me! Now to the food...I have had really bad food, mediocre food, and good food there. The one thing that is consistent, and something I have never seen on a menu anywhere else, is their sloppy joe's. They may be something you relate to your childhood and may not think you want as an adult, but take my advice and try them. They kick a** and are huge (I can only eat half of one). I like their pasta salad as a side...it has a slight blue cheese flavor, but not overpoweringly so. Reubens are also pretty tasty. I stick with those two things after some less than stellar choices on previous visits. I know there have been a lot of comments about the difficulty parking...but hit the side streets and you usually wont have a problem. There is a free lot by the Marietta History museum. There is also a free parking garage (nights and weekends across from the Strand and it is always 90% empty as most people dont know about it or assume it is for courthouse employees ( which is true during the day before 5). All in all, there are better, and worse, restaurants around the square...check out my review on a recent visit to one of the pubs for one of my worst experiences...or my review of the cupcake place or gelato place for some of the best!

I've visited Hemmingway's a few times and each time the service here has been ok, but not great. They are kind of slow about getting around to you. The other day I was there at the bar trying to get a beer and it must have taken 10 minutes to get one of the bartender's attention. They were busy, but only one of the bartenders was actually working while the other was hitting on some girls at the other end of the bar, so the one working was having to serve everyone. The food here is just awful. It is typical bar food, but very greasy and not the good kind of greasy food you find in some bars. Another negative I give this place is they allow smoking in the bar. When I was trying to get my beer the other day a guy next to me lit up and blew his smoke in my face. WTF! I'm an ex-smoker, but I don't think I was ever that rude when I smoked. One good thing I can say about Hemmingway's is that they do sometimes get some pretty decent bands and musicians.

This place is ok. The food is decent and the drinks are good, but way overpriced for what it is. They seem to think that making their food expensive automatically makes it good. Well, they're wrong, but the service is good.

It's a bar that serves food. If you are under age don't even try to step foot. The employees will be all over you and escort you to the door. If you are a smoker and want to smoke indoors this is your kinda place. For a non-smoker like me the stale stench of cigarette smoke can be a little overwhelming. I have been here a few times and the food is decent but its definitely over priced for what it is. I am guessing the prices are what they are because of the rent cost on the Square. Every time I have been here it's been out of convenience. It's never really busy so typically the wait isn't too terrible. Overall there just isn't anything all that special about Hemingway's. I'd come back to support local business but wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

I went here on a first date. My date and I were taking our time getting to know each other and we went during off hours. It was a late lunch. We ordered our food and then our waiter left and never returned. Someone else brought us our food (not a problem at all). Nobody checked on us. Nobody refilled our drinks. We had to go to the bar to get soda refills and then we couldn't find anyone to give us our bill. The food wasn't even served on real plates. I will never go back there. When the staff realized that we had been serving ourselves, they didn't even offer an apology. This place is horrible.

Just stopped in for lunch and the chicken mojo sandwich was large and tasty. Needed a cup of coffee because as of today 3/6/13 it is still so stinking cold here. I must say the coffee really was quite nice and I would of giving Hemingways another star but for the styrofoam coffee cup and the plastic utensils. Oh, also our waitress was lovely and helpful. I know this place is just a bar that serves food but if the food is good why not present it better?

Seems like nice ambiance but we're drinking out of plastic cups because "they ran out of glasses" despite being 1/4 full. I requested a glass and server didn't even check into it although I could see the bartender pouring some beers in a glass. Although I did get a glass for my second beer (why I indulged in a second there I am not sure) I am not a fan and will not be back.

Seated immediately on a Saturday night and service was friendly. Smoking is allowed, and it is 18 and older which is nice!!! I ordered the coconut shrimp(yummy!) and onion rings(large and slightly undercooked). Would loveto see this place do better. Maybe by getting rid of plasticware would be a good start. All in all it was a pleasureable experience and we will be back.

What a disappointment. The lunch menu looked promising until we started ordering and then received our food. The fact that the sandwiches don't include a side is ridiculous considering the price. When we asked for a side of fries, thinking it would be a "basket" or something like it, we were told that it was single order. When we received our order the presentation was very basic and the "side" of fries came on the same plate as my wrap. When I ordered a turkey and bacon wrap I assumed it would be warm, but NOPE it was cold and looked like I had picked up from the gas station or the lunchable section at Publix. The side of fries consisted of 9 fries. I understand portion control, but again for the price this was quite disappointing. There was only one other table of customers in the restaurant, but my guess is that they won't be back either. If you are going to be around the Marietta Square, find somewhere other than here to eat!

My boyfriend and I were house hunting and stopped in for lunch for the first time. This place feels like your typical neighborhood bar and grill but the menu was very lengthy and offered many more options than you would expect. Everything was delicious, nothing to write home about, but it tasted and looked fresher than normal bar food. Yummy onion petals, great and fresh salad. Only complaint, everything came out on styrofoam. Jeez. Oh and they are very clear when you first walk in that smoking is permitted - so there are no surprises later. However, a non-smoker myself, it didn't smell of smoke at all.

Spent $50 on soggy nachos, three beers (all in plastic cups), and nothing special sandwiches. Everything is served on throw-away plates/utensils/cups. Probably a great drinking spot if you're still in college or something. Will not be going back.

The drinks are stout and Hemingway-esque, which is, I suppose, what you should really expect when you step into a bar named after Papa. But if you're doing anything but drinking, don't bother. The food is standard frozen fare and served on paper plates with plastic forks and knives. If I'm going to go off my diet- er, "lifestyle change" for bar food, at least make the presentation count. I've only been in Hemingway's during off-peak hours, but the service was stellar both times, with friendly bar tenders and waitresses who stopped to chat for a minute but didn't hover either. In my mind, Hemingway's is a fantastic place to go and brood over stiff ones after a bullfight gone wrong, but not for all that much else.

This is Hemingway's Tropical Bar & Grill. Not to be mistaken with the multiple other Hemingway's Bars around the country. Jimmy B would be happy here, I just know it. Margaritaville, for sure. Cheeseburger in Paradise. Yep. This is it. Obviously I have an entirely different view of Hemingway's. The service here has always been good and the live music on the weekends is great. About a million and a half of us folks always seem to show up on a regular basis to "pack the patio" when all the seats inside are taken. The small dance floor inside is packed, no matter what the music. It is always jumping! A very popular bar on Friday and Saturday nights. Spic-n-span clean and empty do not describe Hemingways, nor any bar for that matter, but it is just a typical bar bathroom and lots of folks use it. It's an older bar, not sure what was there before Hemingway's Tropical, but I'm guessing that there has been a bar here for a very long time. This one has only been here since 1993. It's right on the historic square in Marietta - just a little north and west of Atlanta. There are other night spots around the square, but none as crowded and popular as Hemingway's Tropical. You be the judge . . come in some time . . . .I'm the one with the long red hair sitting on one of the high stools at a table with my boyfriend. Let me know what you think. I bet, if you can keep your hands off the faucets and just drink, eat. listen to the music & dance, you'll have a fantastic time! I did take away one star for the restroom location - Blake's right about that - - it's in the basement and down a weird hallway past some pool tables. It's very strange, but it has always been clean even if the location was a little funky. I've never run my hands under a faucet in a public restroom so I can't comment on Blake's experience. He may be right, this one may be dirty . . . I'm not going to find out . . . here or anywhere else.

Completely overpriced! The price for a jack and coke is 7.50 in a 6oz glass!!!! Had I known earlier that the small 6oz glasses were nearly $8 plus tip I would not have ordered it. The food was mediocre, served on plastic with the price of a dinner at Long Horn or Outback with half the serving sizes. Avoid this place!!!!!!

This place is creepy. The crowd was a little older, with lots of cougars on the prowl. When I was there, they were slammed, so the service wasn't that great. Our server forgot my drink, so when the manager came by to ask how everything was, I asked about it. Of course, I think something was said to our server and she was very apologetic. Definitely wasn't my intention to get anyone in trouble, but I did get my glass of wine. She did get a little huffy when we went to the bar to order shots, but she didn't come by that often, so whatever. I was very impressed with the band! I was unimpressed, however, with the lack of dance floor. Hopefully, I will not be frequenting this place again.

Maybe a decent place to sit outside for drinks and people watching. Maybe a good dive to go watch the game, but definitely not the place to go for a meal. The service was slooooow and not too smart. (She forgot silverware when she brought us our food, again when she brought us our long-overdue refills, and eventually returned with platicware in hand. Plastic flatware. Styrofoam cups and plates. Not exactly eco-friendly.) The food was pretty bad. My chef's salad was topped with pre-packaged deli meat and kraft-singles looking cheese. The hamburger was less than mediocre. The fries were the kind you can buy frozen at any grocery store and fry or bake yourself. My dad, however, liked his Reuben sandwich. I wouldn't go back.

After my friend and I went on a hike today, we stopped at Hemingway's to grab lunch and lounge around outside on the patio. While we were there, someone arrived to play the guitar and sing, but even that couldn't salvage my meal. I ordered a shrimp po'boy with sweet plantains. The shrimp seemed fresh enough, but the sandwich was made with a dry, thick bread that nearly made me sick. There was sweet slaw on the sandwich, too, which I thought was a poor complement to the shrimp...but at least the tomato was large and fresh. My plantains were a little dry but overall pretty tasty. Perhaps my biggest complaint would be about the lackluster service. Our server seemed distracted and failed to check on us regularly, so when we needed more napkins, we had to wait a while. Also, she dropped the check at our table without even asking if we would like anything else. (Initially, I had wanted to order dessert, but after taking the taste of my main course into account, I decided against it and just paid the check.) I'll steer clear of this place in the future.

My friend and I decided to go there this afternoon because it was typical cheap bar food. Bar seemed decent but we sat outside since it was a beautiful afternoon. We were very disappointed in the service, we are former servers so we know the deal, but to wait 10 minutes to be greeted, get drinks and appetizers, then another 20 minutes for our server to come around for our entree order was ridiculous. You should never let a table sit that long unless they ask for privacy. We saw the girl only had 4 tables, including us, and she kept skipping us when walking around to tables. Our spinach dip was good and our salads were typical. I would probably go back to sit at the bar but sitting outside apparently means slow service.

What a s***hole. I have been serving for over 8 years and have been in the hospitality industry since I was 15. I trained here one night, and the manager didn't even have the balls to tell me I was too experienced. The server I was training with had a party of over 25, and I got reprimanded for trying to help her as she was ignoring many peoples' orders. I did not even get paid for the time I spent here. And they didn't even have the courage to call me back to tell me I wasn't going to work out. Avoid this place at all costs. The management is shady. and they obviously did not have someone in there who knew what they were doing. Go anywhere else to get solid service and a better value for your money. 7.50 for a liquor drink? You have got to be kidding me. The servers/bartenders do not even know how to garnish a drink correctly. As a veteran server please hear me out and do not waste your money here. They obviously do not give a s*** about having quality service and I personally (and my friends) will never ever give them money. At least have the balls to call a server back to tell her she obviously knows too much to work at their shi*hole establishment. DO NOT GIVE THIS BUSINESS ANY MONEY. They are f****** horrible and do not deserve any business. Go to hell you coward as******.

BEWARE OWNER, he is unstable and potentially violent. AVOID Hemingway's. We went today, for the first time, for a relaxing sunday lunch. I asked The owner, Dave, why my kids grilled cheese took 41 minutes to arrive. He told me that I should have expected that, but never why. When I went in to use the restroom, he gave me a dirty look and proceeded to come over and tell me to "kiss my a s s", at which point he bent over and started slapping his backside. I told him his customer service was horrible and he decided that warranted telling me to "F--- YOU" and give me the finger repeatedly. I walked away to the bathroom, and when I was heading back outside to my table, he started yelling the same thing across the room while giving me the finger...for all to see. Very odd and potentially dangerous behavior. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!

I am not a fan of this place. The food is overpriced, the service is super slow, and parking at lunchtime is a pain in the behind. I tagged along with a coworker who loves the place because he cares more about a cute waitress than he does about decent value and good food; if you're in the mood for eye-candy...I'd still go someplace else.

Oh guys this place isn't THAT bad. I actually think the food is quite delicious. The black beans and rice kick ass!! The drinks are also resaonably prices. Very talented bands play on the weekends, lots of people to meet, etc. And during the day you can sit outside, bring your doggie and chill. The bathrooms, however, are disgusting. But I guess an okay tradeoff for fun. I also might not enjoy myself here so much completely sober. ::Shrug::

I used to come here all the time, when there was a pool table downstairs and the servers weren't made to wear ridiculous outfits. I stopped coming here after a visit one night when a man came up to my table of 5 people and asked us if we were using all of the chairs. We explaind that yes, we were, that we were just waiting on one last person. He was so rude to us in response I was shocked. I asked the waitress who that horrible guy was and she apologetically explained that he was the owner, and apologized on his behalf. Apparently this was not the first time he had treated customers this way. I refuse to spend my money at an establishment where the owner would treat his customers the way we were treated. Futhermore, the food is mediocre, and on a Friday and Saturday night they charge a cover to get in. Ridiculous.

So....this is a Tropical Bar and Grill? On the "Mayretta" Square? Riiiiiight. Makes sense. Stopped by here Saturday afternoon with a few fellow yelpers, we had just left a Golden Retriever benefit/Wine tasting, so we needed somewhere to catch some Saturday football. Hemingway's was the unanimous choice. Hemingway's is a total dive bar through and through. I can only imagine that not much has changed since its doors first opened - whenever that was. Melissa L. wanted to catch the Georgia/South Carolina game and this place is a sports bar, you'd think this would be easy enough to make happen, yes? HA! Negative. Firstly, they don't put the game on the "big screens", they're showing the GT/VT game on those, everyone is sitting at the bar, where none of the television's have sound and they're smaller screens. So we ask, "Hey, can we get some sound on the game, since most of the people here are watching the Geogia game?". We get some nonsensical response, Melissa is LIVID, but we start to order drinks. The food is so-so, although the is Cuban sandwich is not bad at all and their fries are decent. My main beef with this place is their focus on taking care of the customer, which was non-existent. Also, if you're a non-smoker, this is a smokers bar, though it wasn't overwhelming while we were there. I also give a big UP to the waitress who brought a dish of water for Katie, my pup, to drink while she was waiting

Your basic neighborhood bar and grill. The service is pleasent but usually slow I dont believe its the waitresses fault but more the kitchen fault, which is strange considering that most of the food is fried. The outdoor sitting is great and the live entertainment is usually pretty good. beer selection is ok.

Food was pretty good but the supposed hour wait for food was actually almost two hours. Service was practically non existent even after the place cleared out. We had to finally ask the bartender to find our server so we could get our check because we had been sitting for about 15 minutes done eating and wanting to leave. Also the sweet tea was sugar with a touch of tea, I would have asked for something else but I could never find our server. Will never go back.

Wow. This place is awful. Not only was the food beyond terrible but the server we had sported a diva sized attitude. We were filming near by & they had us hang out here. We walked in thankful to be out of a small cramped barely air conditioned room in the back of a restaurant and were appalled. All was good until the waitress (dark shoulder length hair over 40) & dressed like a ref (i think that's a bit of a stretch!) started giving us hell. It was obvious she didn't want to be there. My boyfriend ordered chicken tenders only to be told he couldn't have a tab at the bar & order food?!?! What? So I order the food to avoid the "trouble" of having everything we order on the SAME tab...we hang out for a long time I think 4-5 hours total...we even played Trivia which was pretty fun & the guy running the trivia totally awesome! Then like an hour and half after we ordered our food this old hag sends over the bill. It was 8.47 or something...as I reach into my bag to get my credit card she says snarkily, "You can't pay for tabs less than $10 on a credit card" I nearly lost it. Because the guy sitting across from me had a $7 tab & paid just fine by credit card. Plus the WHOLE reason I ordered the food was because she said we couldn't combine restaurant tabs with bar tabs. I told her I had no cash & she could either get the money by credit card or I was walking out. Needless to say, she combined the tabs. HORRIBLE WAITRESS! I am telling you Yelpers steer clear of this place & save yourself the unnecessary heartache.

I've been here twice now. The first time I had a taco salad and a cup of clam chowder. The taco salad left a lot to be desired but the chowder was good. We did snag a patio table and I quite enjoyed the dining al fresco, even though I sort of felt like I was in a parking lot. I only ventured inside to use the restroom which I recall being a little scary. On my second visit, we also procured a table outside. It was a warm and balmy day so I decided I wanted a fruity drink and ordered a banana colada. And, it was darn good (if you like that sort of thing like I do). I chose to order the black bean burger this time and I got the house salad as my side. I have to say, the black bean burger was pretty darn good, too. It was cooked well (crispy outside) and came with the basic lettuce, tomato and onion. I added ketchup and mustard and I thought it was very good. My side salad was good, too - nothing too special but nice, crispy iceberg lettuce with tomatoes, cucumbers, other salad stuff and blue cheese dressing. I really enjoyed my meal this time. The service was good but our server was a little frazzled and chatty. Still, she was good overall. I would give this place four stars based on my second visit but, based on my first visit, I do think there are things to avoid on this menu so I will settle at three stars. I would return if I was in the area but I might check some other places before I do.

Mediocre food combined with horrendous service made my recent experience truly forgettable

I usually don't go to Hemingway's,except once a year, that's in late April when the Taste Of Marietta is happening,I go in ,take a seat at the bar and order a Jager Bomb or a Rum N Coke(also known as RC Cola) But I like O'Shaughnessy's or Suburban Tap,which I have written reviews on previously, they are in this profile.Reasonable prices on Drinks, and Food,I Love It.

bleh. they made us pay $3 cover charge to sit on the patio and order drinks. had to argue with the server about our designated driver not paying the cover because 1.) we weren't even inside where the cheesy cover band was playing and 2.) she was drinking water and 3.) she wasn't even sitting in a chair designated for the outside table. extra star for the sweet lady at the door (amy) who let her slide without the cover charge. service was slow, but adequate, given how busy the patio had become. really need to advise these ladies against wearing those little shorts, however, if they choose to consume such quantities of alcohol as to outgrow their current stock. yikes. of course my table wanted to order dinner, were given food menus, and promptly informed that the kitchen was closed as soon as they placed an order. sigh. and btw serving drinks in plastic cups is wasteful and tacky. the one time i ventured inside to use the bathroom (had to get my $3 worth!), i had to cover my ears because the band was extraordinarily loud in the tiny space. i have no idea how those people were even in there! i swear i'm not an old fogey (and in hindsight, this may have been the problem) but this place was totally unbearable. we subsequently ditched this insult to hemingway ($20 bucks says no one in there even knew who the man was!) for the awesome irish pub across the square. incidentally, they also featured a live band (and a much better one at that) but charged no cover. the place was also dripping in charm and full of cute firefighters. can't complain about that!

Sometimes you walk in a place and just looking makes you shudder. Not because it's that disgusting, really, but because there's something lurking about the place. You can imagine the bathroom before you get there: a dank, rotting thing that hasn't been more than wiped around in years, which after running your hands under the faucet you'll smell worse. Hemingway's is such a place. They have these cruddy little tables piled around with chairs in a way that seems like they haven't been rearranged in years and years. The bar looks likes something out of a Texas movie, only hokey instead of tough. There are so many 'dudes' in here. They all stand around with their not-that-fine girls and act like they just know you're going to try to hit on their women, and which point they will hit on you. The lady came to our table and took our drink order. They stopped serving food at 9. She brought our drinks and let us know how much we owed immediately. She took a credit card and did not come back. We were there almost an hour. Not one drop-by to see if we needed anything. If they have a free all you can eat party here catered by some high end realty, I'd go back. That's about it.

I have to agree with blake.... they have a little patio outside that looks nice but its always packed.. guess no one wants to dine it.... i had the jerk chicken sandwich which was well spiced.. but as far as going back a second time i dont think i will have missed much from the 1st visit... just another place on the square...

Liz Nikki and Megan make this otherwise ordinary place a lot better than it actually is. They do have TV's everywhere so I guess that's cool but other then the gorgeous bartenders, it's an ordinary Square bar.

My parents were in town visiting recently, and we decided to spend a few hours exploring Marietta Square. We all became very hungry...so much so that my parents picked the first restaurant we came to, which was Hemingways (much to my chagrin). The atmosphere was extremely "blah." There was nothing inviting or appealing about the interior (or exterior) of this restaurant that would make me want to eat there. The cloud of cigarette smoke in the air certainly did not add any appeal. Our service was quick and efficient, but nothing special. The food was completely lackluster...bland and boring..."mundane" would be an overstatement. It felt like it was all prepared from frozen, pre-packaged ingredients. The "Maryland" crab cake sandwich that I ordered was pretty sad and tasteless (thickly laced with chopped green and red peppers and containing very little crab). A real Maryland crab cake is thick and hearty, made with loads of real, fresh lump crab meat and Old Bay seasoning. This had none of those things. There was just nothing exciting or memorable about this restaurant. I have no intentions of going back. It appears to be nothing more than a place to sit at a bar, drinking and smoking while watching sports.

After having a horrible experience at a restaurant around the corner and walking out mid-appetizer (when our waters, wines, pitas had not been served), we chose to go to Hemingways. I've been there several times in the past and have always had a really good time. The bands they hire are really great and the atmosphere is really fun and laid back. I was with a group of moms that just needed to let off some steam. Hemingways was incredible. Our waitress greeted us the minute we sat down and our drinks were in our hands within a few minutes. Her name is Haven and she was WONDERFUL to us last night. After only eating half of an appetizer at the previous restaurant, we were all still hungry. Everyone was really pleased with the food - no complaints. The food was great, the drinks were great, and the service was AWESOME! We will definitely go back!

Steer clear of here. Ridiculous prices $4.75 for domestic draft in a plastic cup. Food average but the price s steep. No atmosphere. This is a loser. Go anywhere else on the square. Don't bother with this joint.

We sat at the bar and had great service from Liz. Food was great--club sandwich was good, plantains were fresh, buffalo chicken tenders were great.

Service sucks. Food mediocre. Drinks worse (think watered down margarita with just tequila and sweet and sour) in a plastic cup.

Where to begin? I recently had my first and last experience ever, at this joke of a 'bar'. Myself and a group of friends went to Hemingway's last night because another friend of ours was playing with his band, Tomorrow People, at their 'open mic night'...as advertised by their website. It came time for the band to go on and the 'host' of the open mic night asked if the sound levels were too loud. Everyone was fine, except for one older gentleman who came up and asked if they'd turn it down a bit, so they did. The band was playing their 3rd or 4th song, when the same older gentleman came up and stopped the band in mid-song. He yells at them, while the entire bar is watching and somewhat in shock that someone would be so rude, "TURN IT DOWN OR GET OFF THE STAGE!" My friends and I then asked our server who that incredibly disrespectful individual was that just yelled at the band. After playing dumb, she admitted that it was in fact the owner of Hemingway's, Dave Mendelson. We were all appalled that the owner of an establishment would act in such a way to the people who are bringing him business. Of all the people in the bar, about 15 of us came to support our friends in the band and spend money to eat and drink at Hemingway's, and the owner acts as if the open mic night, that he has obviously reproved, is an annoyance. In addition, the band did not have control over the volume, the host of the open mic night was standing by the PA system and is the one who books the bands. Instead of making a fool out of himself and yelling at the band in front of the entire bar, the owner could have quietly gone up to the MC and asked him to turn it down. On a related note, there's nothing 'Tropical' about this place, in either the look or atmosphere. They don't even have glasses or silverware. Instead we were drinking out of Styrofoam and plastic cups. Our food was served on plastic plates and we ate with plastic untensils. I think there's something to be said if your establishment can't even provide real glasses and silverware. Not to mention the food was ok, at best. I ordered the shrimp po-boy, it was definitely cold when I got it. Oh yeah, and the wait staff all wear black and white striped shirts, like a referee would wear. I think Dave Mendelson's bar is having an identity crisis. Because every time I think of a 'tropical' getaway, I think of referees. In short, I will NEVER return here. The only reason I gave this place one star is because giving them no stars was not an option.

I'm not sure what Mariettans consider "tropical," but if Hemingway's is any indication, these people have never been any further OTP than Marietta Square. The website suggests that "... you may find that the spirit of Hemingway permeates the environment..." The only thing suggestive of Hemingway at this place would have to be the egotistical, "man's man" owner. Other things Hemingway's chauvinistic side would appreciate: servers in low-cut v-neck referee shirts and booty shorts. Tropical? Not so much. Exotic? In a sense: these ladies are obviously here for oogling and they take "work the floor" to a whole new level. Our server did separate our checks for our group of 5 or more, though. As someone who's worked in The Industry, I acknowledge that doing this for a table of twenty-somethings deserves kudos. And she was pretty on-point except when claiming ignorance about the ridiculous actions of the owner during the open mic performances. (Although, to be fair, I did get the sense that insubordination might warrant some type of corporal punishment.) Who hosts an open mic night at A BAR and threatens to kick the band off-stage for being too loud? Dave Mendelson, part-time owner and full-time jerk. This guy took it upon himself to stop the band mid-song and yell "TURN IT DOWN OR GET OFF THE STAGE!" I've never seen someone make such an ass of himself (and his establishment, by proxy). Plastic utensils, Styrofoam cups, and plastic plates? A $10 sandwich and fries "made to order" but suspiciously lukewarm when it arrived? Where does all your revenue go? Scotch and cigars? Definitely not to a 2nd sink in your two-stall McDonald's-esque ladies room. Maybe to light the basement hallways you have to trek through to get to the bathrooms? I felt like I should've had pepper spray just in case someone jumped from around a corner and attempted to assault me. Not too mention how much more treacherous the path to the bathroom would become after a couple of drinks. Exposed rock + steps = gaping head wound. And the owner would probably lambaste you while you lay there broken at the bottom of his stairs. There's a serious branding issue (false advertising, too?) at Hemingway's. The atmosphere screams "LECHEROUS OLD MAN SPORTS BAR," not "Chillaxed Key West." If you're looking to enjoy yourself without pretense, I'd suggest ANYWHERE but here. Unless you're a 40-60 year old white guy.

Great burgers, but slower service at lunch than most people have time for. This is a bar, so if you bring kids you will have to sit outside. The facilities need an update.

Yeah, Hemingway's is a dive, even more so since Noel the really cute bartender left. The bathrooms are about what you'd expect. They have two large screen TVs that are really lousy. The draft beer selection isn't that great. On the plus side the burgers and fries are consistently pretty good, and Sweetwater 420 is one of the draft beer options. The plastic cups and dinnerware are almost humorous until you actually need to cut something with the plastic knife.

i've enjoyed my two experiences here. be prepared for a smoke filled bar and good greasy bar food like rueben sandwiches and caesar salad smothered in dressing. i like the live music although it can be obnoxious at times, it just adds to the character of the place. i will return. i gave it 3 stars just because there aren't many people my age there, if there were i would probably enjoy it more, but don't let that stop you from going there.
