Gyro sandwiches and plates are consistently good. Italian beef quality varies greatly day to day. Some days almost as good as my old Chicago hometown, some days worse than the cold dry roast beef sandwiches you get on airlines or in hospital cafeterias. Italian sausage is OK. Greek salads are good.

Opa! On a recent road-trip, Papouli's was a very pleasant find among all the other usual road-trip franchise contenders. I was very happy to patronize this family owned & restaurant. Food is hand-crafted to order on the premises. I had a Super Gyro (lamb). The meat was exactly what gyro meat should be: savory and spiced just right. Combined with all the right toppings and folded up in a warm pita, this gyro hit the spot. This is not fine dining. Don't go expecting some kind of linen service and crystal. Go expecting really good food served in aluminum foil. But do go. The menu contains a wide variety of tasty dishes, staff was very friendly and made good suggestions. and I'll look forward to visiting this place again, along with its sister location in Alpharetta.

we come here for great Greek salads. The Yia yai salad is delicious. Be careful if ordering to go ceck you bag! Twice in the past two years we had salads with no dressing. Real bummer. Also, get plasticware. It is hard to eat this with your hands! Hummus here is tasty too!

  • Kelli A.

Very disappointed in this restaurant. First employees appeared to just not care. They were unfriendly. I had the soup and salad with the lentil soup. The dressing was pretty good. The lentil soup should have had more seasoning. I also tried the hummus and it was okay but I've had better from the grocery store. Husband had the souvaklia and thought it far too lemony. Besides the food and the unfriendly employees, the place could use some deep cleaning. Floors looked and felt like they hasn't been scrubbed in some time. Ceilings had dirty tiles and some missing and walls too could have used a good scrubbing.

Great menu and fresh, fresh food. A wonderful local place with a strong menu. Small, but nice place.

Great Greek Food!! I often choose the Gyro Platter which consists of a generous portion of rice, meat, tomato, onions and feta cheese. They have delicious stuffed grape leaves that they are willing to warm up. Their side greek salads are fresh and served with their house dressing. Their Gyro sandwiches are definitely requires both hands and plenty of napkins. They also have the traditional side of hummus served with flat bread, various greek olives as well as fresh Feta both bought by the pound. A fantastic authentic meal at a reasonable price. Seating is limited.

I've had better, I've had worse. I love to eat greek and was in the area when we decided to do a take-out order here. I was disappointed that I didn't fall in love with at least one of the things we ordered. I got the dolmas (grape leaves) with a falafel wrap and the boyfriend got a beef & lamb gyro. The food was pretty underwhelming, but I'm never really that disappointed with greek. The dolmas were some of the worst I've ever had, though. I'd probably return to Papouli's, but I would definitely try different dishes.

I have been going to this place for years and I still love it! Counter service so don't be surprised. The gyros are stuffed full of delicious meat and if you are feeling decadent get the one with melty cheese. I really like their hummus, very thick and with olive oil on top. Their Greek salad dressing has a very vinegar bite which I love. I don't know what it is about Greek restaurants and their french fries but I am almost always impressed and think maybe they should be called Greek fries instead. If you love yourself, get the curly fries with extra tzatziki to dip them in! They have baklava by the register and usually another couple of kinds of cookies to tempt you with. I have never had anything I didn't like here and the service has always been friendly. Warning: it does get busy around lunch.

Good Gyros! Loose the Styrofoam!!! It's freakin' 2012!!

Easily overlooked, Papouli's is nestled in an area dominated by towering signs of coffee chains, fast food chains, and everything fast and cheap. It actually fits right alongside of these places. It fits, but without being mundane. No liquid smoke flavored burgers or greasy fries, but pilaf and falafel. As a fresh and (sometimes) healthy alternative to many of the restaurants in this area Papouli's should be a must for many. It's stripped down and low key for sure, but with just enough authenticity in it's offerings to keep even frequent eaters of Mediterranean faire pleased. However, there are certain items that come off bland and uninspired. Even so, you really should try as many items as you can. Some hit and some miss, but the hits will stay with you longer than the misses. Papouli's isn't the place for someone just passing through. But if you're close by and want something new you really should give it a try. You might end up like me and keep going back.

I love this place and eat here often. It's cheap, reliable and tasty. The chicken riganata and greek salads are my favorites, but they have lots of good things to choose from. A cut above your typical gyro place

Great super gyros. Best place to stop at I-75 and I-16.

  • Mark M.

Great food and competitive prices. The food is made fresh. You can watch them prepare your food. The employees are on the ball, very friendly attitude and at least act like they want to be there. Its a moderate sized restaurant, the only complaint I have; the chairs need to be fixed. Overall I give 4 stars. I will return soon.

Been going here for years...delicious and fun for something different. Lately we have been having the Yaya salad, a delicious lettuce bed with cuccumbers, feta, onions their dressing and gyro meat as a a side or to put on top. Hint - pour dressing on top, put cover back on and flip over for an easy "toss" salad! They also have a baked chicken they is incredible.

Papouli's Mediterranean Cafe & Market is a family owned and operated restaurant, proudly serving authentic homemade dishes from the Mediterranean first opened in Macon, Georgia in 1986, shortly after their move from Chicago. They have an extensive Greek menu and every time we go to Macon to visit my Dad and Sister's family, we always have to have at least one meal from Papouli's. The gyros are my favorite and the Greek Salad is excellent. I believe they also have a location in Alpharetta. Papouli's Mediterranean Cafe & Market also offers a large selection of imported grocery & deli items for your convenience:imported olives, cheeses, olive oils, pastas, grains, coffee and tea, baking needs, grape leaves, canned and jarred vegetables, spices, prepared food, cookbooks from around the Mediterranean.

Good food no doubt, but the atmosphere was awful. Tiny tables with the food served on plastic platters which were too small. When my wife and I got up to clear our own table and leave, there was food that had spilled all over the place (couldn't help it!!!) Pretty much self-service; you take your plastic dinnerware and drinks to the table and then they call your name for pickup at the counter? Tacky. People who order take-out are milling around the place, never going back. Metropolis is right down the road and it's a much better experience. Don't believe their website, I never saw the first real plate or silverware.

after getting my gyro taste buds all revved up downtown a few weeks earlier, this was a disappointment. meh. so so friendliness. my gyro was okay. i thought that the portion was a wee bit small and that my bread was sorta stale. they have some random items for sale (i suppose for sale, cuz they sure were dusty), and a small area with tables. in terms of bang for my buck and taste...hello recession, i'm crossing this off my list in favor of greek corner deli. sorry papouli's'....you just weren't yummy enough.

  • Jeff W.

I was driving through the area and was excited to see a Greek place near my coffee pit stop. I walked in and the tables were full, but not a single person was eating. (Clearly a bad sign in restaurant land. Ultimately, I figured out that the two kitchen workers and cashier were so busy talking instead of cooking and delivering). I ordered a gyro with feta. I am not sure it would have had any flavor without the feta. Mediocre meat at best, no sauce, decent bread. At least the briny feta was good. I doubt Macon has anything better as far as Greek goes, but I would implore you to look elsewhere.

  • Matthew H.

This place is consistently good. This is road food for us, as we are often passing through Macon on business, but we always make a point to stop here if it is even approaching mealtime. The falafel is excellent, and the veggie sandwich was surprisingly good ( I wasn't expecting avocado and sprouts, yum!) the sweet tea was flavorless and the 'decor' is tired, but the food is great and the location is easy, just off the highway. Try it!

  • Doug K.

It was OK. I had Falafal and a side of Humus. They offered hot sauce with the falafal that I don't often find in the US. The falafal was kind of dry and not the soft texture with the slightly crisp exterior that I remember from my travels. My friend had a gyro that he said was pretty good. The restaurant accidentally mixed up my order. I got grape leaves (dolmades, I looked it up just now.) which I guess sounds like the way I say humus. I had one before I found out it wasn't just a side that came with my sandwich. It was very good. They took it back and gave me my humus. I'm surprised they didn't just let me keep it since they really can't serve it again. (At least I hope they wouldn't.) The restaurant is very plain. It had an odd odor about it that didn't smell real good. I wanted to eat outside, but my friend didn't notice the smell or was wasn't bothered by it.

the best gyros in central Georgia. A weekly lunch stop for me. Try the fries with feta dip, it's delicious!

Fast Greek food is always good. There isn't much to it really, place some shaved compressed meat on a pita bread with tzasaki sauce and some lettuce and tomatoes and you've got yourself a winner. Papouli's does a good job at this, but it might be a little better with the addition of some hot sauce or the use of lamb only shaved meat, but this is Macon, GA not Athens, Greece or Istanbul, Turkey. The store has some premade deserts and salads ready for take out if you so desire as well as some canned Greek type items (olives, oils, nuts, etc...). Good and fast, that's what this place is.

    (4)
  • Kristin C.

If you're in the mood for Greek in the middle Georgia area, this is the place to go. The food is authentic and great. Go for anything on their pita. Also stop in for their deli/market selection. Good stuff.

  • Rocky L.

As far as Grecian food goes, Papouli's takes the cake. Not only is the food made right there in front of you, it's made fast, yet still tastes remarkably well. You would think that it would take more time, but I simply walked in placed an order and after 5 or 6 minutes, I had my food in front of me. Piping hot and tasty. The employees were very personable and quick to help you with what it was you want to eat. The restaurant was clean and what do you know, the bathrooms were immaculate. Everytime Im on that side of town, Im at Papoulis because its just a great place to stop in and grab a bite. If youve got time, give them a chance.

Very disappointing in quality and ambiance of the restaurant.

Was really excited to see there was an "authentic" Greek place in Macon. Ordered take out, and we were utterly disappointed. More salt in the food than in the Mediterranean Sea and little other flavor. Tasted like genuine fast food without the goodness that makes you want to go back for more. Despite the somewhat higher prices for Macon fast food, there was not a lot to the meals. Three of us each ordered the vegetarian platter and each ate a large Greek salad or chicken platter as well, and we don't eat more than average. My husband got the gyro and was also unsatisfied after eating his still semi-frozen curly fries. Also, they were out of tabbouleh salad, what one would think is a staple, which was disappointing, and after paying for baklava, it was not in the bag when we got home.

Very good food! The baba and hummus were excellent. The Gyros platters were almost too big for the plates, we should have shared one. Oh and they have nugget ice! Great quick stop.

    (4)
  • John F.

Great food. The gyro is tasty and a large portion. They make terrific falafel and also have a halal selection if you're into that. Best Greek in town. The place is kind of a dive, and it's just tucked back in a little shopping center, but don't let that fool you. This is some of the best Greek I've ever had.

  • Thi T.

Gyros plate: bang for your buck. A plate of pita bread, topped with thin slices of lamb gyro, topped with curly fries (regular fries, unseasoned, lightly salted). Comes with two containers of tahini sauce. Lamb is flavored well. Salad is refreshing. Be sure to eat it with the light dressing that comes in a small container. Souvlaki plate: chicken is average. I like how it's flavored with lemon. Awesome soft, fluffy rice. Falafel: really dense. Flavorful, yes. But a bit too.. salty. Very low key place with disposable plates, forks, and knives that are available at the counter. Good bang for your buck for a quick, decent meal. Better than most mall food court food.

    (4)
  • Ashley B.

I had the vegetarian platter. Things that I love here include: dolmas, babaganouj, hummus, falafel, tabbouleh salad, and karithopita. Their tabbouleh in particular is one of the bests I've had. I always make a point to stop at this place when driving through Macon cause they never disappoint. Hole in the wall with great food! Highly recommend!

    (5)
  • Amanda N.

I had the Mezze Plate special, hoummus, dolmas, olives, feta, tzatziki, pita, and choice of meat or falafel. ( I choose lamb meat). The plate was piled full and excellent! The meat had great flavor, and the hoummus was creamy! Also, add curly fries and feta dip, you will not be disappointed!

    (5)
  • Julie P.

My Oh my! ! Yes, a bit of of the way. ..so so worth the trip. Amazing gyro. ..feta dip, dolmas, hoummus and toasted pita. You will not leave hungry, you will not leave disappointed, you WILL leave wondering how soon you can return. ..supper time maybe? Already scanning the menu to help decide what I'll try next!

  • Rachel N.

On the drive home from our honeymoon, we popped into the restaurant because I was dying for a salad. I was not disappoint. The food was good, my Greek salad was massive for the price I paid! The baclava was delicious too! It was a little cramped and very simply decorated. Great road trip stop!

    (4)
  • Cheezwhiz R.

Stopped based on Yelp reviews the Gyros was excellent and so was the spinach pie although it was small. The Gyros was a nice size as We got the large for leftovers. Salad was fresh and service was fast. French fries were also wonderful. The only thing stopping me from giving 5 stars was it needed serious remodeling and a little housekeeping. As people have said the outside needs a good power wash. I saw most people were getting carry out and that is the way I would go. I would

  • Britt M.

I was so excited to try this place based on the other reviews. The bread was stale & my chicken was so old & over-cooked I could barely chew it. Place was filthy. My husband's meal was gross, too. How could they possibly have a 100 health score? Bribery? Disgusting. Will never be back.

    (1)
  • Michelle S.

Love their super-gyros! Small little place, we have never dined in and have always order take out from them! Our favorite gyros in town!

Stopped in here on a road trip. Got the gyro and veggie plate. Surprisingly really good for a place in the middle of GA. I would recommend getting the falafel. They were fried really well with good amount of flavor. Loved the taziki sauce but not a fan of the garlic type sauce (too salty and too dry) Overall pretty good for a grab and go Greek joint!

    (4)
  • Jamie M.

Stop in here for takeout, and you will be impressed with the quality of their food. Eat in, and the inside seating is not very impressive, but they do have a couple of outside tables that are nice. This location sits right off of I-75, and it's right beside a Starbucks and a Dunkin Doughnuts, so I usually grab a coffee and a doughnut to go along with my gyro. The counter folks are always helpful, and they know their Greek dishes pretty well, so ask questions until your heart is content. By the way, you must try their Spartan potatoes when you stop by. Give these guys a try if you are in the neighborhood.

  • Barb H.

Fresh, fast & great tasting. A bargain for the $! Will definitely return. The Greek salad and chicken gyro are both easily shared.

  • Michael S.

Food was bad - very greasy and not hot. The quality was poor. My wife wouldn't eat it and said it was the worst restaurant meal she ever experienced. Wait time was lengthy and I cannot recommend this at all. I tried it based on a recommendation but I think if you want this type of food Pasha is way better!

    I. Love. This. Place. Seriously one of m favorite spots to eat. Their hummus is amazing and the music sets the mood.

What an amazing place to eat. The dalmas was delicious! The home made pastries are full of juicy flavors. The staff knew how and when items were made, he gave descriptions. I will stop here every time we pass through.

  • Melissa H.

Nothing to write home about. They were out of my husband's first three choices. We ended up each having gyro plates, which were fine. The 100 health score was VERY nice to see, though! That's what bumped my review from "meh" up to "A-OK". I take food safety very seriously.

    (3)
  • Kats B.

really enjoyed this place! First if all they had choices can you say moussaka! Sadly I didn't get it... But it gives me something to look forward to next time. I ordered 3 desserts! They were all really well done not overly sweet, not overly syrupy or dry. The serving sizes were more than filling. I had to get a togo box there was so much food --- or maybe it was the three desserts! Well, I didn't eat them all I only tasted them. The pita was one of the best I've had in the south not dry or tasteless like so much store bought. The hummus was well balanced in flavours. The guys working were great! Awesome customer service like it should be friendly, helpful, interested and explanatory. We will definitely go back! Will be writing a blog review as well!

  • Marc R.

We stopped at Papouli's because of its reviews, location right off the Interstate, and because it sounded healthier than standard fast food. I had the soup and salad combo My Greek salad was fresh with a tasty dressing. Lots of romaine and crumbled Feta with cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and olives The Avgolemeno soup was equally tasty with plenty of rice and chicken. The atmosphere is simple, but the good food, Greek music and friendly staff make this casual Greek place worth a stop.

Amazing Greek food in a strip mall setting. Seriously, the best falafel I've ever eaten. You must try their feta dipping sauce! Will definitely be back!

Wow! So good! My boyfriend and I were just traveling through and we stopped on a whim. I love Mediterranean food and I'm so glad I stopped here. Great value for money and the food is delicious! I have certain dietary restrictions which I know can be annoying, but they were more than happy to accommodate. I ordered a cross between the Hoummus & Tabbouleh pita and the Vegetarian pita. It was beautiful. As soon as I opened it up I knew I was in love. The sandwich was overflowing with deliciousness. I attempted to eat it by hand but eventually I had to admit defeat and started tackling it with a knife and fork (never a bad problem to have!) yummy! I also ordered a 6-piece falafel side and they were very good as well. The gist... nice friendly staff, delicious food, go now!

The cheese pita was great but had too much sauce. Other than that it was a great place!

I found this gem by accident about 3 years ago. Since then I have recommended it to everyone that I know as a great place to stop in if you are traveling through Macon. They have excellent fresh gyros, Greek salads, hummus, falafel and anything else Mediterranean you can think of. It is usually packed for lunch as their is limited seating. Definitely recommend it to anyone with a craving for Greek.

Best greek food in town. The place needs a facelift but the food is worth it. I have never had a bad lunch from there. I have been there countless times and always been happy. I just don't understand why the place looks so run down for busy as they stay. I get nervous when I order a per made salad and hummus with it sitting in the rusty ole display case

I love different foods so we often try new places. This cafe is small and cozy with a slightly fast food feel. You walk up to counter to order and pick up food. The staff is very friendly and helpful. My family of 5 ordered a variety of sandwiches. Everyone was happy with their choices. The tzatziki sauce is fabulous. We also had the baklava and almond wedding cookies which were made in the restuarant. Delicious food! I can't wait to return.

I use to come here all the time when I lived a couple miles away, sadly that was years ago. Now whenever I pass through Macon I stop by. I have personally never actually gotten anything besides the gyro or the gyro plate and an extra side of tzexky sauce. A generous helping of meat on a soft pita and I usually pour that sauce all over. Once I did get a small Greek salad it was good as well. I have tried the chicken it was delicious herby and cooked well. I'm guessing they have been around for close to twenty years, as I use to live near by about fifteen years ago and it is just as good as I remember. If your driving through that stretch oh highway(I-75 & I-16) stop by and give them a try.

The super gyro wrap was awesome. I got a greek side salad that had what tastes like homemade dressing. They sell Greek groceries, too. I loved it!

I am not Greek so this review is solely based on my love for their gyros. Staff is generally nice and friendly. Work down the road and we get takeout from there at least twice a month. The gyros are just great. Tzatziki is the best. Fries are curly and good but just normal. The Greek salad is delicious if you like the bite of red wine vinegar . Comes on the side if you don't . Get a chunk of baklava if you like honey. It's ridiculously good. I'll keep going there unless something changes.

So good! We got the beef and lamb gyros which had fresh veggies and great taziki yummmmm. The hummus was also great and the pita wasn't the hot fluffy stuff I was hoping for but was fresh and a great vehicle for hummus. They had a good selection of fruit based drinks (Izzy, San pelligrino and such) Very clean, not fancy and very fast service. I'll definitely be back!

We used to eat here 1998-2004 and it was pretty good and kind of close to true Chicago style Italian beef. Ate there on the way to Savannah recently and the beef and au jus was flavorless and the bread stale. And the outside area needs major powerwashing. Very disappoitibg.

I've been coming here for years and stop by frequently when in town. Pretty casual atmosphere with not a ton of seating but hasn't been a problem and there are places to sit outside as well. Food wise, the gyros are excellent and I really haven't tried a ton on the menu because they're so good. The dolmas are also pretty good. They also have baklava and that sort of sweet stuff. The Greek salads are pretty good. Overall it's a great place for a quick casual lunch with great unique food that would be tough to find elsewhere in the area or to pick up for dinner.

I love Papouli's! My standby is the gyro and some tabouleh. Hummus is also excellent; if you're wanting to bring some to a party, don't pick up the stuff from the grocery, get a pint of it, here! You won't be disappointed. :)

Good Food ........ But, The Tables are always dirty and floor UN-swept. This use to be a great place but not anymore. The hired help don't seem to do much or even care about the customers. I will be going downtown for a Gyro from now on.

On the drive home from our honeymoon, we popped into the restaurant because I was dying for a salad. I was not disappoint. The food was good, my Greek salad was massive for the price I paid! The baclava was delicious too! It was a little cramped and very simply decorated. Great road trip stop!

Very good food! The baba and hummus were excellent. The Gyros platters were almost too big for the plates, we should have shared one. Oh and they have nugget ice! Great quick stop.

Great food. The gyro is tasty and a large portion. They make terrific falafel and also have a halal selection if you're into that. Best Greek in town. The place is kind of a dive, and it's just tucked back in a little shopping center, but don't let that fool you. This is some of the best Greek I've ever had.

I would

I was so excited to try this place based on the other reviews. The bread was stale & my chicken was so old & over-cooked I could barely chew it. Place was filthy. My husband's meal was gross, too. How could they possibly have a 100 health score? Bribery? Disgusting. Will never be back.

What an amazing place to eat. The dalmas was delicious! The home made pastries are full of juicy flavors. The staff knew how and when items were made, he gave descriptions. I will stop here every time we pass through.

Nothing to write home about. They were out of my husband's first three choices. We ended up each having gyro plates, which were fine. The 100 health score was VERY nice to see, though! That's what bumped my review from "meh" up to "A-OK". I take food safety very seriously.

really enjoyed this place!

Wow!
