I think the Catalina is listed twice... Just to make sure, here is another review. Where can you leave stuffed for $3.00???? The Catalina (aka Mercado), thats where. You need some banda music? They have that. You need Mexican Soap operas? Yep, they have that too. Authentic Mexican food at a great price. Not only that, but they GIVE you hot dog soup with every meal. Thats right INCLUDED! Eat here.

Place is okay but on my last 3 visits they were lagging in the quality of the food. And weekend to many drunken fools around wich is not good when you got family

Nice little authentic mexican market with a great restaurant in the back! Spending the last 6.5 years of my life in Las Vegas, these types of places are something I miss a lot. My friend found this place a few months ago since its pretty close to his union hall. Being so far from my house and me never having a reason to go down there, I hadn't had a chance to check it out. He had to swing down there quick a few weeks ago, so I decided to tag along. He took me to this place for lunch and its great! We each got huge plates of food and a few beers for about $20! The servers were all super nice. Definitely not the "kitchy" mexican restaurants you find that generally serve texmex type food. You're basically sitting in a large cafeteria type room eating off mismatched dishes with plastic silverware. Very tijuana, but damn good!

Catalina is an Authentic (far as I know) latin themed grocery store that, while very small (because the actual La Catalina restaurant is in the rear), has a nice selection for quick shopping. They're open super early, which is great, and often they'll have a cup of fruit on sale for cheap as a snack. They have a selection of meats, vegetables and fruits as well as Mexican coke in a bottle with sugar and not corn syrup...that's worth the admission right there. It's pretty accessible in the morning but beware, by lunch time the parking lot can get really full because of the restaurant in the back.

Catalina is on a nondescript mostly industrially zoned stretch of road that makes it really, really, easy to miss. The hoard of cars out front should be the first clue, however, that something is going on in there and most certainly it is.... The place is always packed, the parking is scarce, and the circling cars and tight spaces can make driving in their lot feel like a knife fight in a phone booth. Get past that, and inside though, and you're in for something truly special. The small grocery store you walk through might as well just be a lobby because it's clearly all about the restaurant. It's big, wide open, loud as hell, and I kept feeling like I'd walk out into the street after lunch past vendors and into the town square of a Mexican town somewhere. This place takes you away. You might as well be IN Mexico and the food backs that experience up. It doesn't get much more authentic than this. From the Michoacan style enchiladas, to the lava rock Molcajete bowls overflowing with grilled meats and fresh Nopal cactus leaves draped over the side, you can't make a bad choice here. As they paraded huge bowls of caldo past us and the toasted fragrance of tortas filled my nose, the hardest thing to do was figure out what to get. You know that feeling... when you want everything on the menu?! I went with a combo plate because I wanted to try the most things possible and also, I was wanting to try their tamales because most of what I've had in Atlanta have been nothing more than disappointing masa cakes with a dollop of filling in the center. Everything was excellent and the tamales had great flavor that took me back to my home town of San Antonio, Texas. Wash it all down with Mexican coke (or one of their house-made Micheladas if it's not working hours), scream your conversation across the table because you can't hear a damn thing, and man... it doesn't get any better than that. Catalina is an experience, it's great food, and it's the spirit and flavors of Mexico. Check it out! Definitely.

Winner! Winner! Chicken Dinner! This place is AWESOME; the most authentic dirty Mexican place I've found since I moved here from Los Angeles 2 years ago. The food tastes just like home and it's crazy cheap too. I'm a fan - big time! It makes me not miss home as much.....

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
