If you are ever in Lagrange this is the best place to go for a great dinner. We each had a melt-in-your mouth petite filet. It was fantastic. The service was excellent. The food is every bit as good as a 5 star restaurant. You won't be disappointed.

This is an easy review for me since I've been going to Hunter's Pub for about 10 years. Not a once a week guy but a few times a year. 4 stars for me means a definite staple on the usual list of places to eat out. Would go more often but it's about a 30 minute drive. The decor is shack-like but clean and appropriate for what it is. The service is consistently good although expect to wait up to 45 minutes on a busy weekend night. Just grab a cold beer and hang outside with the rest of the crowd. The good: get the fillet, they do a great cut and will actually hit the temp you ask for (med rare for me is perfect). The mashed potatoes creamy and well seasoned, the rolls warm and soft. Mark's (owner) signature steak sauce is delicious and I never put anything on a steak except there. The average: the fried lobster tails (usually a special) are a bit greasy and have too thick a batter for a delicate seafood. The not so great: they still serve your salad dressing in a little prepackaged plastic container, but I'm really not going there for the veggies. Would like to tell you more about other items on the menu but except for my son getting a good burger I've stuck to the above since it's so good. Great place to bring guests from out of town, especially if they are not from the south. They get a real taste of southern off the beaten path food and culture.

When you get here, you are going to think you're lost or have come to some horrible hole in the wall place to eat! HP is in the middle of nowhere in an old block building that has been painted camo. Don't be deceived by the looks of the place. The food iss out of this world. They serve up Fried Lobster Tails as an appetizer, entree or add-on with a special "dipping sauce" and they are well worth the investment! They usually offer some sort of seafood special (changes nightly) and I haven't had one yet that I did not love. The Ribeye is seasoned really well and tastes great with their homemade steak sauce, but the Filet is the most tender meat you will ever eat! Sweet potato fries and mashed potatos are awesome. There is nothing here I don't love! Great place to eat! If you're going on the weekend, expect a long wait if you don't get there pretty early. They don't do reservations and the "call-ahead" system never works for us!

If I haven't made it *quite* clear enough in my prior reviews, I am not from the Columbus area. So when I heard what a great reputation Hunter's Pub has established here, I immediately had visions in my head of the local Olive Garden, which typically has crowds on the weekend that resemble 1930's bread lines. I've come to distrust things that everybody else likes here. (Don't even ask me about "A Tuna Christmas.") However, I have to admit that Hunter's strongly deserves its reputation. We arrived fairly early on a Tuesday night, so I haven't been privy to the full-on, hours-long lines that are essential to the Hunter's experience, but I can imagine why people are willing to wait. We were seated immediately and given very speedy drink and appetizer service from a friendly, knowledgeable waitress. I ordered a fried lobster tail that arrived on a stick with a creamy dijon sauce, which was fabulous. (I understand my colleagues' japaleno poppers were very good as well.) I was surprised/delighted that the appetizers came out so quickly after being ordered-- it was no more than ten minutes before they were served, piping hot, of course. The salads are nothing special. I'm surprised they even bother with salads, actually, because compared to the rest of the food they seemed kind of amateurish (iceberg lettuce, packaged dressing, etc). But I have no complaints because of what followed! My entree was the daily special of grilled red snapper in a lemon butter sauce, with sides of garlic green beans and a mushroom/carmelized onions combo. The sauce was divine, the fish itself was very fresh and seared to perfection, and the vegetables were seasoned just enough to bring out their natural flavors without trying too hard. Also the dinner rolls (something I usually barely notice or comment on) were fantastic with a little bit of butter! I was totally impressed with the prompt service, the ingredients and the overall experience. The rest of my party ordered steaks, which I can't rate, but they looked very tasty and everyone at the table enjoyed the Hunter's Pub specialty. We finished with a selection of desserts: one peanut butter pie and one chocolate pecan pie. I only had some of the pecan pie, and it was a delicious way to top off a great meal. But let it be written: Hunter's is a place to come for food, not ambiance. It's right off the interstate in Hamilton with a very small parking lot, and the actual building is about the size of a double wide trailer with 12-15 tables, a four-seat bar and a jukebox. Thus, their incentive for quick service because they need to turn those tables quickly! The place is notorious for two-hour waits on the weekends, which means that cars are parked every which way with lines of people spilling out the front of the building. However, the food and service make up for lack of atmosphere, so it's best for a night out with your most unpretentious, food-loving friends. Oh, and bring about $80-90 for two people (after tax and tip) if you want to get the full experience. That should cover an appetizer, a couple of beers, two steaks, and a dessert to share. They may not have the steakhouse vibe, but they have the steakhouse taste and charge accordingly.

I have lived on the coast of Maine and my husband lived on the coast in Florida and I give Hunter's Pub my highest ranking of all for their seafood.

Fried lobster tails for the appetizer were fabulous. I had the filet (medium) and it was the second or third best steak that I have ever had, right behind Angelos in Panama City, FL and B.R. Prime in Biloxi, MS at the Beau Rivage. Definitely worth the trip to GA. Very casual dress and plan on waiting unless you get there around 4 on the weekend.

Probably one of the top five steak houses in the Columbus area. When I PCS'd to Fort Benning I asked around to find out where the locals go to get great food. This name came up time and again. When you can run a successful steak house in the middle of nowhere you are doing something right. The food is on point. High end cuts of meat prepared to perfection. Pricey for the decor and ambiance (there isn't any) but the food is the star of the show at this joint. Often standing room only and lines for a table. I highly recommend this place to everyone looking for the best steak around. The service is outstanding too. For a special treat try the peanut butter pie. It is devine!

Great Food! Great Service! This is the definition of a hole in the wall. Very very small dining area. But the food is unbelievable. The ribeye was to die for. I just wish they had homemade ranch dressing. They use pre packages ranch. Other than that, this place is great. Beer and wine only, no whiskey at the bar. Food is The best around. Highly recommend! We drove an hour to eat here.

Probably the best steak place to go to in Columbus area. It is a little drove to get there (middle of no where)but food won't disappoint you. Try fried lobster tails for appetizer, they are pretty good. If you re not a steak person, you can also get a fish. Staffs were friendly and food was served fast.

Ok me and three co-workers went here last Thursday for a work dinner. I don't eat steak but I agreed to go anyway. If you don't eat steak you have few options; a fish option that changes (red snapper the night I was there) and grilled chicken breast. I think that's pretty much it. Of course all my co-workers ordered steaks while I went with the chicken. I can't personally speak to the steaks but I can tell you there was nothing left on anyone's plate so maybe that's all that needs to be said. With each meal you get two sides to pick from as well. I can honestly say that for a basic grilled chicken breast it was probably the best I've ever had. The grits were good maybe a little heavy and the salad was nothing special. For dessert apparently you MUST get the peanut butter pie. All mu co-workers did but I went with the key lime pie. I believe both are homemade. The place is in the middle of nowhere. On a Thursday evening the lot was full and cars were parked up and down the street. In other words the place was packed. But we only waited maybe 20 minutes to get a table; not too bad This place isn't inexpensive but not unreasonable either. If you can find it, this place is worth a visit especially if you like steak. Or even chicken.

Pretend it's your bday. They'll give you free pie. Try the peanut butter pie. I don't like anything peanut butter, but this pie is the best pie I've ever had!

  • Ray C.

This place is well worth the drive if you're staying in the area... everything the other Yelpers state in their reviews is right on. My ribeye was cooked to perfection. The cheese-bread starter is phenomenal. Service was excellent. Save room for the peanut butter pie..

I'm going all-out (in terms of stars) in my review for this hidden gem of a spot. Certainly an unexpected find (came to me via a recommendation from a good friend) and so glad I took his advice and got off the highway traveling between Columbus and LaGrange. This roadside dinner place is about the size of someone's house, but don't let the outside fool you...they are grilling up some righteous steak here! Cooked to perfection and accompanied by a large salad and a potato, this meal hit the spot. Steak were cooked to the exact temps we all ordered, and the sides and salad were quite tasty as well. Prices are reasonable and the staff is as friendly as they come. The place was completely packed by the time we got up from our (early) dinner table. Don't pass this spot up, you'll be sorry you did!

I found this place while working in Columbus about 8 yrs ago and fell in love with it! Anytime time I'm on I-185 passing through I stop in for a filet. Their steaks are as good as any big city upscale steakhouse with very reasonable prices. It's definitely a hidden gem that I'm thankful I stumbled across!! I give it 2 's up!!!

My husband and I are new to the area and I found this WONDERFUL place online on YELP. The food is to DIE FOR, the help wonderful. I am a VERY picky guest. I don't want to be rushed through my meal. And I wasn't! From drinks to appetiser, to meal, to dessert, it was a pleasure to dine here! Even the divey ambiance was great!

  • John D.

This is a hidden gem. A perfectly cooked steak. Don't be fooled by the "austere" look of the place. After all...it is a hunters pub, so it is probably a great place to stop when returning from a good hunt in the Georgia woods. Place was extremely packed, but the service was spot on. Very happy and will make this a stop when back in town. The peanut butter pie was amazing! I am going to have to do some extra exercises tomorrow!

  • Nate H.

Great steak. Great service. Get over the price and the plasticware...it matches the ambiance and the food makes it worth it. You're going to a "hunters pub" and you should expect that ambiance. Ribeye was cooked great and tasted great. Mashed potatoes were great. Peanut butter pie was awesome. We got the fried lobster tails to start and they (and the salad) were the only part of the meal that was just ok. Worth the drive.

  • Nicki J.

Great place to eat. Friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere. We enjoyed the ribeye, filet, sweet potato fries and loaded baked potato. All was great! BUT, whatever you do, don't leave there until you try the peanut butter pie! Oh my gosh! It's the best ever!

  • Nkenge G.

Nice service but it's over-priced and crowded. I've been twice. The first time I had the marinated grilled chicken breast ($12) and asparagus. It was good enough to make me return. The second trip was on a Friday night, we were warned about the crowds but thought, how long can it take? It took about thirty minutes for us to get a table and at least an hour for our food to arrive. I ordered the steak tips. The iceberg salad was small and forgettable. Worse yet, the server made it without gloves. Taking money and then adding tiny tomatoes to my salad with bare hands is a little scary. The bread was delicious but the sweet potato fries weren't anything to write home about. The steak tips were disappointing. There was a lot of meat, it was cut thick and it got cold and chewy fast. It's also smothered in overcooked mushrooms and onions (I had mine without onions). Even adding the sauce, it wasn't good. I'm not sure why anyone would rate this place five stars. They do have nice servers. I left my purse and no-one went through it or anything. The jukebox is cool. They fill it with money on Friday evenings so you don't have to pay. And I appreciate the semi-late hours. But the seating is uncomfortable, the atmosphere is noisy and the food only warrants three stars. Being generous, I'd give four stars for the chicken breast and two for the steak tips. I won't return.

The Hunters Pub is awesome! First off let me say there are no neon signs & if you come out here at night you will not find this place due to the woodland camo paint job. This is a local favorite & is always packed so be prepared to wait. I always get the 12oz filet & it never disappoints.

A real Gem. Thanks to good friends for taking us to dinner. Steaks were cooked perfectly and nicely seasoned, fried lobster tails delicious, and a bottle of Stags Leap made for a top notch dinner in a low key environment. We'll be back.

Lobster tails to start, love this place. Always my stop anytime I'm near Columbus, GA. Tonight I ordered the lobster shrimp stuffed swordfish!!!!. Two sides and a salad for $26. Well worth it and then some. Every visit I try some I haven't had before and have never been disappointed, actually always impressed.

Words can not say how great this place is! Restaurant open at 5 already a line to get in! The lobster was great! Very friend staff! My husband had the best steak he has ever had! My shrimp was to dead for! Very good desserts! When in Callaway Gardens this is the place to go!!!!!

Thank you Yelp for never letting me down! Hunters Pub and steakhouse is FAmazing! My husband and I shared the 12oz. Filet(seasoned and cooked to perfection) with two fried lobster tails(yummy). For sides we ordered sautéed mushrooms, garlic mash potatoes, sautéed spinach and a baked potato. All were great(if I had to pick two-I'd go with the first two). We are so full that we ordered our peanut butter pie to go.

Delicious meal at this quaint place! Went with a group of 8. The dining area is really small but our wait was only about 25 minutes on a Thursday night. The fried lobster is amazing. Really flavorful. Steaks are delicious and I heard great things from others about their fish meals and the fried green beans. We finished with a variety of pies. I personally chose the key lime - tart and tasty! The wait staff was very nice and quick to serve. I'll definitely be going back when I'm in the area next.

Few get the 5th star. Hunter's is like that place back home where the food is excellent, waitstaff fun, and atmosphere unique. Highlights were the cheese bread, lobster claws, filet, mahi, peanut butter pie, and of course the waitress. An awesome evening of great food and fun. For a Wednesday the place was packed, I can't imagine what a Friday night looks like. I would suggest come early or late, but 7:00 is prime busy time. The place cleared out about 9pm. Definitely worth a trip back next time.

  • Ted C.

This place is very easy to pass by because it's really just a small, dingy building EXCEPT for the lot full of cars. The inside is a really small space with mostly 4 tops but the food. Oh, the food makes it worth it. A couple things to know: -they won't seat incomplete parties -they're 'not responsible' for steaks cooked well done (not sure what that means) -they make their own steak sauce (kind of like A-1 but slightly spicier) I ordered the small filet, rare with mushrooms and a baked potato. Rare here MEANS rare so if you don't want it walked through a warm room for rare then order it medium rare. There's a seasoning they put on there prior to grilling that sears itself to the meat and I usually HATE seasoning of any kind on my steaks but this one was pretty understated but tasty. I didn't use the sauce at all on the steak-I put a little of it on my potato to taste it.

  • Amanda F.

Great dinner spot! The daily specials are always delicious but I don't think you could go wrong with anything here. It is out of the way but SO worth it! No matter what you order, make sure to save room for the peanut butter pie.

  • Brenda D.

Does not look like much from the outside but food and service was terrific. I loved the peanut butter pie. Great steaks according to my friends but I had vegetables and saved my appetite for the peanut butter pie. Definitely worth seeking out.

I did a double take the first time I saw Hunters Pub, but when I sat down for a New York strip I was blown away. One of the best steaks I've ever had.

  • Darrell D.

Just got done with dinner and I have to say WOW! Its been a long time since I had a Ribeye steak that you could cut with a fork. The steak sauce pairs well with the seasoning on the meat. The fried lobster was some of the best lobster I have eaten, even in the NE. My steak was perfect and the waitress even waited till we checked to make sure it was cooked right. To me the meal was Ruth Chris quality at half the price. However, if you are one of those snubs that will write a bad review because there is no fine china or a waiter with a towel over his arm, then please stay away. If you are a fan of great food and fantastic service, then come on down. Within 3 mins we had our drinks, less then 10 mins later our appetizer showed up, and no sooner then we finished that, our meal arrived. Small place, hole-in-the-wall and fills up quick. Has enough staff to give you that personal touch. Can't believe that all that food comes out of that tiny kitchen, really folks, ask about the size. LOL

Food was good but the low rating is because they are so incredibly overpriced. Go elsewhere, folks .... Good food is everywhere AND at a more reasonable and affordable price!!!!!

Great steaks!!!! You'll not find one better. Fried lobster tails are amazing. My brother swears by the peanut butter pie. Be prepared to wait, but I promise you won't be disappointed.

Steak for two on Wed - includes 12oz ribeye. Mashed potatoes are the best.

  • Alyssa M.

My NY strip steak had so much potential, the flavor was good, but it was over cooked (I asked for medium rare and it was barely hanging on to some pink when it ended up in front of me). My dad makes better steaks. They also lost some major points for all the pre-packaged food--the salad dressing, sour cream, and butter. Also, the salad was blah iceberg packaged mix. The steaks weren't so inexpensive as to excuse this. The lobster tail was greasy and bland. They were busy but service was extra slow for us hence why I didn't send my over-cooked steak back. My boyfriend really liked his steak. The peanut butter pie & chocolate peanut butter pie were awesome! Mixed review. It's a cool concept having a such a rustic "hole in the wall" steak house, but for the price, I'd rather go elsewhere. Food doesn't have to be "fancy" to be high quality.

Hunter's Pub is DELICIOUS! Easy to access and excellent service. Our steaks arrived quickly and tasted great. The mashed potatoes were out of this world. The fresh warm bread served with our entrees was great too. I had the petite filet and my husband had the New York Strip and we were both happy with our meals. The starter salads were great too and their balsamic vinaigrette was fab. We got peanut butter pie to go since we were so full, and it was awesome as well! The atmosphere is very casual. It looks like a hole in the wall, but the food quality is superb. We sat on the left side room of the restaurant (instead of in the room with the bar) and liked that because it was much quieter and lighter. We'll definitely be back the next time we're craving great steak!

  • Alex J.

There is a special place in my heart for places like this. It's a cinderblock bunker with a wildlife motif and some serious talent in the kitchen. Tables are set with crackers, the house steak sauce and little else. They have a better beer selection than most rural georgia restaurants and the staff is cordial and helpful. I've eaten in some phenomenal famous steak houses and if you judged them on food alone this place would run away with it. Chasing fried lobster tails with a rib eye is now my favorite extreme sport.

    (5)
  • Amanda W.

Didn't live up to the hype. I can get past the "rustic" exterior and even the ripped vinyl table cloths but the place was DIRTY with dust covered Christmas decor up months too late and filthy floors. The salad that was like like something from a cheap coffee shop and our fried lobster tail had no flavor (other than grease). Our entrees and sides were very good, although the steak was not quite what people make it out to be. Service was wonderful, no question. The quaint little pub idea would work well if they cleaned up just a little. We will continue our search for great food in a comfortable environment because Hunters Pub didn't hit the mark.

Found this little gem while at callaway gardens and our family of 6 was very pleased . Very casual and homey atmosphere Great service and great food...filled up fast so get there early

  • Gary K.

They have some of the best steaks around. The only place I've personally been and had better was at Flemmings in downtown Austin, TX. Hunter's beats them for the price though. The location is out in the relatively middle of nowhere, and the place itself is rather small and packed, but a cool atmosphere at the same time. I'll definitely try to go back whenever I'm in Columbus.

    (5)
  • Marcos M.

Think of a pub where a real hunter would go eat after a day in the woods. This is exactly just that. Not fancy, upscale or even modern. The carpets in the 800 sq. ft. dining area were for the most part dirty and so were the food stained paper menus. Some of the food and drinks are even served in disposable cups. But the attraction of it all is the outstanding service and delicious food. It's surprisingly cheap as well. Also, don't miss their home made steak sauce (and I hate steak sauce) and desserts. This is clearly a place where all the locals go. This place was jam packed on a Tuesday night with all types of individuals. I'll certainly be back for more when in back in Georgia again. I'm sure even germophobe Howie Mandel wouldn't resist either.

    (4)
  • Alex R.

Great hole-in-the-wall place. Best steak place around Columbus area. I recommend their succulent filet and fried lobster tail (appetizer, comes in 3s). Despite it's isolated location, you will find yourself waiting for a table if you go around 7pm

  • Lee K.

Hunter's Pub came highly recommended by a Pine Mountain local that we met at Callaway Gardens. He really liked the place and suggested we go there for dinner. After confirming the pub's reputation on Yelp we made the trek on a Saturday night. As mentioned by other reviewers, the wait can be very long. We arrived around 7:30 to find the parking lot filled with people waiting for a table. We added our name to the list and then hung out in the parking lot with the others. It really had a party atmposphere. Everyone was in a good mood, drinking beer and smoking while waiting for their table. Our 1 hour wait passed quickly and then we were seated. Out waitress was prompt and very friendly. We placed our order and received our drinks promptly. This was followed by our salads and then our entrees. The star of the evening was the rib eye. It was seasoned perfectly and cooked medium rare as requested. The mashed potatoes were great also. The only knock I can give the place is that if you are seated next to the jukebox (we were) it can be almost impossible to hold a conversation. We were really getting blasted so I asked our waitress to turn the music down, which she gladly did. The only problem was that the waitress serving the table furthest from the jukebox kept turning it back up. We finally were able to reach a compromise where the music was loud enough to be heard, but not so loud that we couldn't hold a conversation. To be fair this is a pub known for being loud. We knew that going in, and had we not been seated right next to the jukebox I'm sure we would have enjoyed the music more. All in all a great meal and experience. I highly recommend the Hunter's Pub.

THis place reminds me of back home in Missouri with it's little bars/restaurants out in the middle of nowhere. I had the fried lobster tails which were fantastic. My husband had the snapper whcih he also enjoyed. The servers were all very friendly and our food came out fairly quickly even though we were literally in a full house. Great place with great food.

When I chose "my last meal on earth" for my Yelp account profile, I chose mashed potatoes and steak from Hunter's Pub - that says it all from one of your most loyal, local fans.

    (5)
  • Jesus F.

Really, that's the best steak people have had? It was a pretty good rib eye, but don't understand the raving about it. Service was ok, and I guess the shock factor is that you don't expect that type of food in a place that, but there wasn't really nothing special about it. The panko crusted fish with some sauce, was rather small, and not all that interesting. And it wasn't cheap either

    (2)
  • M P.

Great food, good prices and great service. My only "note' would be they need more lighting in their parking lot. They stay very busy and at times, you'll need to park along the street and there is very little light out there. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Hunter's

Here's the quick and dirty. I'm from Atlanta and have eaten at all the top Atlanta Steak joints many, many times. Well, after living in Atlanta for around 20 years I decided it sucked and it was getting suckier by the minute so I sold the house and quit my job and moved to Hamilton, GA. Needless to say I was SO HAPPY when I ate for the first time at Hunters Pub! It had all the taste of the top Atlanta steak houses without the snobby A-holes and insane prices. I like a hole in the wall kind of place...it's just me. If you are a snob go to Atlanta, if you want to have some fun and mingle with fun people that serve great food come to Hunters. I wear jeans and work boots.....try getting into Bones like that.

Going here tonight can't wait best steaks around! Small hole in the wall with a 5 star steak, yes even competes with Ruth's Chris, given it's 1/4 of the price..

    (5)
  • Bill C.

Hard to describe this place. Never seen anything like it. My recommendation is that you go try it. Ignore what it looks like on the outside. Ignore the fact that all the waitresses look way too good to be waitresses in a hole in the wall place. Go early. Pick anything on the menu, but gravitate toward the special. Every positive thing every other reviewer has said is absolutely true.

  • Brandon E.

Hunter's Pub is one of those places you hear about that everyone says you *have* to try. I remember the first time I went there -- I thought we were lost. It's literally in the middle of nowhere, and looks like a decrepit old building from the outside (and not much better on the inside). But HP has some of the best steaks I've ever eaten. Their filet easily rivals any five-star steakhouse, for a fraction of the price.

I meant to write a review a couple of months ago when I was first introduced to Hunter's Pub, but never got around to it. I have now eaten at Hunter's Pub three times...twice within the past week....if that says anything about the food! My first visit here I had the New York Strip (my favorite steak) and it was divine. Ask for the green beans instead of potatoes...while the mashed potatoes are great, the beans are even better. Second visit here I had to get the same thing, but the third visit I went for the seafood special (it changes nightly). Absolutely delicious Asian-inspired grouper, which tasted as fresh as I would have expected if we were on the Gulf Coast. Try the cheese toast for an appetizer. While it looks and sounds simple, it is fabulous. The salad is nothing special at all, but it comes fast and helps to tide you over while you wait for your steak! Portions are large too, each visit I've had plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day. Don't come here if you are looking for great ambiance...it doesn't exist. As others have mentioned, it is truly a hole in the wall. Converted from an old gas station as I understand it. Crowded, loud, and boisterous, always busy but with prompt efficient service and out of this world steaks. Come when they open at 5 pm if you don't want to wait. Overall, Hunter's Pub probably serves the best steak I've ever had, which more than makes up for the lack of "fine dining" atmosphere. I can't afford to keep eating here twice a week, but this is my "go to" place when I crave a great steak.
