Not bad for a cheap, quick brunch or lunch, but nothing special. I got an omelet, which had plenty of bacon and cheese, but the onions were a bit burnt, which was very odd. The toast and grits were pretty weak - grits tasted instant and toast was just boring generic bread. The service was nice and the store attached had some interesting souvenirs (Tabasco flavored jelly beans and non-alcoholic moonshine - whatever that is).

Three words: Cheddar cheese biscuits. That's all you need to know. That, plus Cupboard Cafe serves up some seriously generous portions of what I suppose is none other than authentic southern eats. For about $11 I got a large piece of trout, served with what I think was a hush puppy, bread, and two sides. I chose chicken noodle soup, grilled peppers and onions, and cornbread (plus the initial complementary cheddar cheese biscuit - yum). While this was far too much food, I enjoyed most of it, particularly the soup and the trout. Cornbread was very dry, and my peppers were extremely oily. Barely touched either of these items. My other half enjoyed his country fried steak and was practically jumping up and down with how good the mac and cheese was. Sadly their salad bar looked, well, sad - but that's not why I came to the south, so I didn't really think twice. If you are looking for salad, however, this may not be your best bet. Service was pleasant and the atmosphere was nice. Overall it was a good experience. PS - my apologies if I spelled hush puppy (hushpuppy?) wrong. Or if this place in fact, doesn't serve them after all. It's because I'm Californian. My bad. Regardless, this fried piece of goodness was damn good.

Loved this place! Super friendly staff. Had the biscuit and gravy with a couple eggs. My brother had the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich with grits. We thought it was all delicious.

This place was again a solid breakfast. The food and service are always good and tho this is more of a hole in the wall vs the dillard house. .it beats it by miles in food quality and cleanliness

Drove into town somewhat tired and cranky after a long day leaf peeping and was staying at the local motel about a stone's throw away. Went there for a somewhat late dinner and the place was PACKED - always a good sign. Decided on the chicken dish (sorry didn't write down the name), but it had a grilled chicken breast (mine looked more like pan-fried, even better!) and had bacon, grilled mushrooms and several cheeses melted on top. AWESOME best describes this dish. The portion was so big (and those who have read my reviews know I'm no skinny diet freak) that I had to take half with me (which I ate for dinner the next night). great blend of flavors and textures, this really hit the spot on a cool evening. The place was so good, we went back the next morning before we left for breakfast. All the typical diner fare, all prepared just right - but if you get homefries, make sure to have the waitress tell them to make them extra crispy -they'll come out perfectly browned like they should.

After driving past this place on every trip to Atlanta, we finally stopped, and I am sad that we didn't do it sooner. Such an adorable little place on the side of the road. Fantastic staff, a huge menu (maybe a little too big to be honest, it's a little overwhelming), and high quality food with good portion sizes. Great southern cookin' and a classic dessert selection. The little shop at the front sells coffee and fudge that is cheaper than just about any fudge I've ever seen. We shall be stopping here on every trip through from now on.

I stopped by Cupboard Cafe with my family on the way back from our Christmas tree outing in North Carolina. I have been to Cupboard Cafe many times before, but not for quite some time. The interior has changed a bit and now sports a coffee and ice cream bar. But if you look past the kitsch, the food really is worth the stop. I had a vegetable plate that was pretty awesome. Everything tasted freshly prepared. The cheddar biscuits that they give you at the beginning of the meal are amazing! My sister strongly vouches for the club sandwich. It was huge! Cupboard Cafe might resemble a lot of other kitschy roadside places, but the food sets it apart. I'm glad that it has stuck around for all of these years.

I am SO glad we stopped in at this wonderful place! We were staying at the Dillard House and just couldn't fathom the thought of eating the giant (albeit delicious) breakfast two days in a row and wanted to find something on the lighter side. Everyone in the Cupboard Cafe greeted us with a smile and a cheerful "good morning" and we were seated immediately in a cozy booth. The coffee was hot, fresh and constantly replenished. My husband and I both opted for omelets - he got the "country"and I got "bacon and cheese". They were big, fluffy and delicious, as was the toast, strawberry jam and the BEST grits I have EVER eaten. As usual, I couldn't finish my meal! We will definitely be going back there the next time we visit Dillard. Maybe we will save room to try a slice of one of their dozens of homemade cakes or pies. Oh, and leave some time to browse through the gift shop, filled with more sweet treats, coffee-to-go and unique treasures!

Excellent food! Especially the fried chicken! No, especially the vegetables! No,especially the Dessert! Good service, good food, good environment. If you like country cooking this is the place. If you like other kinds of food The menu is large enough to accommodate most tastes. I Try to plan our trip so we can be passing this restaurant around lunch or dinner time.

We visited again for dinner and enjoyed a very fine meal, with meat and two with bread for $8.99, and several a;;-you-can-eat daily specials for $9.99. Service is fast and friendly, the salad bar uncommonly fresh and diverse, and the dessert list is to die for. In short, we're bumping them up one star to four. Try it, you'll like it. We found the Cupboard Cafe rather by accident after stopping at the well-known Dillard House a couple of miles away and discovering they were asking $19.95 for a weekday lunch buffet. We thought that excessive for a typically Southern buffet table, albeit in a lovely house setting. The Cupboard is much less atmospheric, but so are its prices. And we found the food to be quite good and reasonably priced. The selection of lunch specials was impressive. Nearly a dozen entrees, 15 vegetables plus sandwiches and salads. The specials were $7.99 and included chicken, beef liver, meat loaf, talapia, country fried steak. etc. You can get the meats fried or grilled. The price includes two veggies and a roll. Plus, you get a cheese biscuit that is mighty tasty. The salad bar is fresh and attractively laid out (no iceberg lettuce in sight). They have a great list of desserts but we weren't hungry at that point. Service proved friendly and quick. In fact, everyone here was friendly. We'll come back. Haven't been here for dinner, but we're guessing it's good too. This is not fine dining, and it lacks the patina of the Dillard House. But you'll probably leave smiling, not least because you saved some money.

Love this nice little restaurant. The food is always excellent. LOVE the (forgot the real name...French I think) potatoes cooked with onions and cheese. All their vegetables are good. Country fried steak isn't bad either. You can't miss at this place. Nothing fancy...just good food. And reasonably priced as well. We stopped going to the Dillard House in favor of the Cupboard because of the price and who needs to stuff yourself til you can hardly walk anyway?

This is a great place for a meal. I have never had bad food or service. When you are served you drinks, they also serve you s cheese-biscuit, almost like Red Lobster's. They always give you a fresh salad bar. I get the Chicken Plate, which is around $10.00. You get a good amount for what you paid. With the plate, you get 4-5 strips, 2 vegetables, and a bread. The have their chicken cooked like you would find at Zaxby's minus the a little of the breading. Their breakfast is good and i believe it is served all day, but please don't quote me on that. It is in a great location too! I love Rabun County for some reason, and I feel more safe and secure there than Gainesville, GA. I would recommend this place.

Great place for a meal! They have specials and a standard menu. I've never had a bad meal here. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. My favorite is the liver and onions, not many places have this. The soups and salad bar are also tasty and fresh. Check out the desserts too, if you have any room left.

Excellent find in the northeast corner of Georgia. Southern cooking with a flair. Excellent fried chicken, but it better be to stay in business 'round here. What makes this a standout is the strong dark iced tea. And the fried oysters were superb. Most surprisingly, the fried mushrooms are the best I've ever had and I've had them in many many places. The service was exceptional. The touristy gift shop is entertaining. And they have a coffee bar to serve fresh ground coffees, including espresso. Came back the next morning for the delicious coffee. Many visiting the area may only go to the nearby Dillard House repeatedly but that would be a mistake.

We chose this place based on the reviews on yelp. The good was really unexceptional. We ordered the SOB burger and was just very plain, no flavor except for the pound of onions. The baked potato soup was decent, cheese biscuit was ok, the highlight of my meal was the hot apple cider. Won't be going there again.

Stopped in for lunch on a Sunday afternoon while driving through the mountains. By looking at the overflowing parking lot, one would expect it to be great. It sort of reminds you of a locally owned version of a Cracker Barrel. They have a very good general store with nice selection of toys, candy, and various other items that we checked out while waiting for our table. Was told the wait would be 10 minutes, but it was more like 25-30 minutes. Service was friendly but somewhat slow, but they were very busy. Had the Sunday lunch baked chicken and dressing special with mac and cheese and green beans. Not bad, not great. Others had the meatloaf and didn't really like the spice combination used in it. They have a very, very large menu and that may be a shortcoming, not allowing them to specialize in a fewer number of items. Would stop again, but would like to try breakfast next time.

I live 30 minutes from here, and the breakfast is great. We went for dinner and had fried chicken, which is supposed to be a restaurant specialty. It was extremely dry and although it was the special, it tasted as though it had been sitting around for awhile. The reason that I didn't give it a higher rating was the service. The server kept coming over and taking our plates before we finished our meal. We never got a refill on drinks and she got upset because my elderly Mom didn't want to use her salad bar plate to get salad until her meal arrived. I can understand the rush if it was very busy, however, there were only two other parties in the entire restaurant. The waitress was not a people person and it was quite obvious. I would not recommend this restaurant for dinner.

Excellent find! Great service and delicious home cooked food. The popcorn shrimp were some of the best I've ever had. Make sure you get fudge on the way out. I recommend the caramel pecan. Such a great authentic way to end our ski weekend.

We were passing through and had been looking for a local place for breakfast. The cupboard looked fairly busy - usually a good sign. It turned out to be a great stop! My husband and I split a Western omelet and ordered a side of sausage. Yum! The food was excellent. The reason I gave only four stars was that the prices seemed high. $9.99 for an omelet is a little steep in my opinion. More one omelet, side of sausage and two coffees was $20. Adding a second omelet would have made that a $30 + breakfast. Service was good and very friendly. They also have a gift shop that would have ben fun to browse through if given time. Bathrooms were small but clean. I'd certainly recommend stopping! I bet dinner is great!

Found this place on the way to Atlanta out of the mountains, and man was it good. Just as tasty as anything that would come out of my own Momma's kitchen. If I am back in the area, I will definitely return!

We were just driving through and specifically didn't want a chain for breakfast after staying at our hotel just down the road. Great breakfast and great prices. Service was friendly and prompt. This place fit what we were looking for perfectly. Will have to come back when I'm in the area again.

On a recent retreat at the Dillard House, I dined at Cupboard Café twice. After battling traffic driving from Atlanta for nearly three hours, I arrived at Cupboard Café close to 8pm on a Friday evening. Although they close at 8:30, the hostess and server were very accommodating to our group and welcomed us enthusiastically. There were a total of 7 people in our party and they served us and honored all our requests quickly! For dinner, my girlfriend and I shared a fried chicken platter and also ordered a vegetable plate: creamed corn, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes of the day, and sliced tomatoes. After a long evening of driving, this meal hit the spot! Everything arrived at our table quickly and all the portions were much, much larger than we anticipated. We gave a valiant effort but weren't able to come close to finishing all of the food. The fried chicken was very delicious--crispy, juicy, and hot! The sides all tasted like something you're grandmother would make, and it's very clear Cupboard Café doesn't take any shortcuts when it comes to their food. We returned again for breakfast before heading back into town and I ordered the Chick a Dee hash with a biscuit and side of sausage gravy. This was an extremely heavy breakfast but tasty and filling. Again, the meal reminded me of everything that would come straight out of a southern grandmother's kitchen. I enjoyed both meals here and the service is phenomenal! We had two different servers on each visit but they were both very friendly and went out of their way to accommodate our requests. Each time they returned to our table, they had beaming smiles on their faces! This place gets an A+ in my book and is definitely worth a visit!

Stopped here for a late lunch on the way from the Smoky Mountains back to Atlanta. It's an old-school roadside southern restaurant. You enter through a touristy gift shop. The food is solid. The fried chicken was seasoned nicely, although the breast was a little dry. The sides we tried: -mac n cheese was just so-so -butternut squash souffle was very sweet, but delicious -fried okra was great -cornbread was decent, cheddar biscuit was pretty good, yeast roll was not as good. -banana pudding for dessert. YES. Best thing we tried. The real deal. The food reminds me of Mary Mac's or Colonnade in Atlanta. Everything is mostly pretty good, everything is entirely un-healthy, and the recipes don't seem to have changed in half a century. Won't knock your socks off (with the possible exception of the excellent banana pudding), but not bad. Service was very friendly and quick. Good value / low prices. Overall a good experience. Worth a try.

  • Kevin F.

Service was very good. Our server was very kind and helpful with helping us decide what to get. Food was okay - nothing exceptional. The omelette was massive, as what my wife's Chick-a-dee hash, but was mostly onions and peppers as a filling for both, and not much meat. I got a side of potatoes and they were more boiled than browned and had an unusual taste to them. Kids had pancakes and sausage. As a guy that makes his own sausage, this was pretty good stuff. Prices were pretty high at over $40 for 2 adults and two small kids, but the place was always packed when we drove by, so I guess they aren't scaring away business.

Poor. Stopped here for lunch just passing thru and it was a mistake. Salad bar was acceptable but it went downhill from there. Grilled chicken was bad. Broccoli casserole didn't look edible. Service was below avg.

  • Daniel S.

The hightlight of this place is the fresh salad bar which has a nice selection of fresh peppers, mushrooms, and is above average for the area. The lowlight? Everything else. I was dumb enough to try the Low Country Carbonara (when at a southern restaurant - dont order non southern dishes) the sauce was bland, the shrimp was good, the chicken was average and I've hit a first. I'm not sure if the sausage was sausage or a chopped up hot dog. Needless to say that was the worst $13 pasta dish I've ever had. Ever. My parties Pork roast looked like turkey but tasted like pork, but he said he would give it a 3/10. Another got the Lemon peppered chicken and i had a few bites and it was seasoned to death and not very tasty, even a little overcooked and tough. The coke was good If you're looking for a fresh salad bar and medicore at best food then this place is for you, but it makes me weep that people try this place thinking it's southern cooking in any form If you're also looking for an overpriced general store attached to the restaurant trying to look like a cracker barrel but ultimately falling short. You've found your place.

    (2)
  • Jill M.

Perhaps this is the place that inspired the Cracker Barrel concept. Family owned and operated. My roast beef dinner had rich gravy with sautéed mushrooms and came with two sides. My husbands prime rib looked great and he liked it ( didn't offer me a taste ). Our friend had a cold plate of different salads, picked beets, ripe tomatoes that looked good and he really liked. The server was having a rough time but the rest of the crew made it right. Delicious dinner.

Stopped here on the way back from Asheville to Atlanta. We had seen the signs for Dillard House which put us in the mood for Southern comfort food, but when we looked it up on the web, it was not quite what we were looking for. A quick search on Yelp while on the road pointed to Cupboard Cafe as an alternative more to what we were looking for. We were very impressed - ole fashioned Southern comfort food done properly. I had the onion-encrusted chicken, which came with a peach glaze that was both wonderful and completely not what I expected - think applesauce, but with peaches, not at all sticky-sweet as many fruit-based sauces are. Butternut squash souffle (very good!) and potato salad as sides, and my partner picked up a few fried pies to go. Service was great, friendly ladies all round. We don't get up to the mountains that often, but we will definitely come back here on the rare occasion that we travel up 441 again.

I stopped by here on the way up to Asheville for lunch. I decided on the fried chicken, since it seemed to be one if their specialties. The fried chicken was moist and tender, but there was a little too much breading and not enough meat for my tastes. The mashed potatoes were standard fare and nothing special. The steamed vegetable of the day was cauliflower. The steamed vegetable is just that: steamed vegetables with no seasoning. They were, however, cooked about right, not mushy and not raw. I got a cheese biscuit when I sat down, and another with the lunch. The biscuits were good, but they're not something I would go out of my way to try. The service was exceptionally friendly and quick. Overall, this place was decent but nothing in the meal stood out as exceptional. I might come here again, but would probably try some other restaurants in the area first.

Stopped by for a traditional southern breakfast instead of the fast food joints... Service was great... The food was great.. All of us enjoyed our breakfast... Ham and eggs.. Nice open space... had a shop attached to it to buy goodies, huge stuffed toys desserts and chocolates... They had a room which was filled with history... The photos of all American presidents which I thought was cool... They also had the Declaration of Independence hanging on the wall.. Well decorated

We went here with SO's family for mother's day. I love the little shop up front with everything you can think of. They had some nice smelling candles, stuffed toys(my fav was the stuffed German Shepherd), key chains and other random stuff. We were a party of 8 and while they were setting up our table, we perused the front area. We got seated in ~15 minutes and placed our drink orders. SO got beef nachos and the rest of the table shared the cheese nachos and that was aight. I got the fried grouper with potato salad and rice n gravy. It was just okay. They also have a salad bar but i didnt check it out. It's not a place i would pick to go out to eat if im in the area just because i dont think the food is exceptional.

Since first stopping here this has become a regular stop. Just good food and good service. Breakfast, lunch or dinner. Good Ole southern food. Breakfast country fried steak, sausage gravy and biscuits, pancakes all delicious. Some of the best fried chicken ever and onion rings hand dipped and made to order. Haven't had a bad thing yet.

Excellent choice for a simple home cooked breakfast. Homemade biscuits, homemade jams and jellies, and excellent bacon. My breakfast special consisted of one fresh scrambled egg, bacon, grits and a homemade biscuit for $2.99. Drinks are Starbucks prices, however.

So after not getting to eat at the Dillard House, we stopped in here....we had the Mr. Krispy Fried Chicken and the Cheddar Garlic Biscuits were tasty. Their dessert Case looks amazing.....the service was okay, and the food was tasty. The little store is fun to rummage through. We probably wouldn't eat here again.... but it filled us up.....

We were on a weekend trip to the mountains and had a craving for fried chicken from a mom and pop establishment. We read the ratings on yelp and stopped here. First we asked for mashed potatoes and found that they don't offer them everyday. It really isn't that hard to make them. It doesn't mention this on the menu. We accepted the buttered potatoes. Then we wanted banana pudding which everyone craved online. They also didn't offer that everyday although their menu listed it under desserts but didn't mention certain days like they mentioned. The fried chicken and the potatoes were extremely bland. We wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Sadly...KFC is better that this place. I have to give them credit for being friendly though.

The cheese biscuits were great! The service was good and portions adequate. I got the stir fry chicken and it was more sweet than spicy. Probably not the best choice on the menu. Pecan crusted catfish was good.

First visit to Raybun County (after moving to N. Georgia 4 years ago) this weekend. Ate dinner Saturday night at Dillard House (cuz everyone said you have to have that experience) and then stayed the night there. Review of all that later. Breakfast this morning at the Cupboard Cafe and we will definitely be here again! Great food and, yes, breakfast is still served all day. The selection is large, meal is plentyful, food was nice and hot and cooked to our requests. I had 2 scrambled eggs w/bacon done crispy, a big biscuit, a side of home fries and coffee. Yummy good and so much I had to leave some. Coffee comes right away and then you are given a carafe of it to enjoy during your meal. The price is way more than reasonable for the amount of tasty food you get. Service was good and our server (forgot her name) scored points with me for having the crust to banter a bit with my husband who loves to be the funny jokester of our group. Nice to see him get it back once in awhile from someone other than myself!! The atmosphere here is a little bit of "country cute", but in a real way and I don't know how to explain that. The floors are lovely old wood, seating is nice wood chairs and tables or benches in booths and is plentyful, and there is an outside porch covered with baskets full of hanging plants and window boxes of flowers on the railings. Can't wait to come back to the area and try maybe lunch or dinner here. I know it will be delish!

Went for breakfast while visiting my mom. The selection was great and the service was excellent. Amanda was our server and she was attentive, sweet, and we hardly had to ask for anything, she brought it all. My mom and I had the berry, pecan, and honey stuffed french toast which was delish! My brother had the egg basket, which he said was very good. They serve buttermilk or whole wheat pancakes too and a nice size stack is only $3.99. French toast was a little pricey, but it was a huge portion that I could not finish, so worth it. I would like to come back for lunch or dinner when I am visiting again and will update if I do.

Specials everyday. i.e. today (Thursday) was "all you can eat" fried and/or peel-and-eat shrimp. I had the fried shrimp ($11.99), lightly dusted with batter, and fried perfectly. Served with 2 sides and choices of breads. The onion rings are also worth mentioning. Furthermore, I love any restaurant where they give you something to eat as soon as you sit down - in this case, cheese biscuits -YUMMY. Service was good.

Went here for lunch today with wife and her cousin. We've been here probably 6 times over the last few years. Dillard and Clayton have been my wife's family's home for at least 5 generations. It used to be that there would be a "groaning board" of food lovingly cooked for our visits back in the 60's. Nowadays, the few remaining relatives accompany us to a local eatery. Dillard House is too expensive for non-trenchermen, and too touristy for our crowd. Cupboard Cafe manages to keep a blend of hospitality, some basic country food, pleasant atmosphere, and reasonable prices. Wife had the day's special, Chicken Pot Pie, with green beans and squash casserole. I had Country Fried Steak with collards and blackeyed peas. Cousin had a Reuben sandwich (!). Everything was very good, except for the collards, but then no one cooks better collards than I do, so I'm probably being unfair here. Wife had banana pudding (above average) and Cuz had bread pudding with hard sauce (exceptional). Total came to $32.10, reasonable, especially since Dillard House charges over $60 for three. As we were leaving, I decided to make a bathroom detour, where I was reminded why I like the vibe of this place. Hanging above the ceramic wall relief fixture is a print of an American Indian wearing an old top hat, beads, and an old US Calvary coat, his face lit up by a huge snaggletoothed grin. A poem underneath says " Go easy my friend, hang free and loose. Gettin' rattlesnake mean just ain't no use. Take one step at a time and enjoy each day, and peace and joy will light your way." How much more inspired can a guy get while taking a leak? (That's a FIGURATIVE question, BTW)
