This place is Diners Dumps and Dives worthy. It's 5 star worthy. It's take your kid and husband for a looooong drive out to neverneverland in the rain worthy. Smh. It's just THAT great. Brownie pulled pork was a little salty for me, but then again you're ordering the rub so it's to be expected. They have a great selection of sauces--sweet memphis, vinegary North Calina, and Mustardy South Calina. The Brisket was delightful, as were the corn nuggets. I had to get a second order. Crazy good. The ranch dressing that they serve with the pulled pork is great on everything. I dipped everything in it, including the corn. It's just great. I could do with a little less butter on my bread for the sandwiches, but hey, it is what it is. Damn good BBQ. I wish it were closer. It'd shut down Fox Community et al. Then again, it may lose that cozy feel that I love about it. RING THE COWBELL on the door IF YOU'RE HAPPY!

Great food. Large selection. Tasty and quickly prepared. Convenient location. Staff is friendly. Limited dining area. Line to order can be to the front door at busy times. But the food is worth the wait.

We came here on a whim after a day at the race track. We saw the gigantic pink pig from the highway, a parking lot full of cars, and decided to stop in for a late lunch. The dining area is pretty small and at 2:30 on a Saturday afternoon, it was packed. Luckily, we were able to snag a small table. I had the pork plate with mac n cheese and brunswick stew. The mac n cheese was good, but not the best mac n cheese I've had. The brunswick stew, however, was better than most. The pork was tasty, I especially liked it with the sweet BBQ sauce. I tried a bite of the brownie plate. I don't particularly love the burnt ends but if that's what you dig, you would love this! I think they are known for this dish. Would definitely come back here if I was in the area for some good BBQ!

Being born and raised in Georgia one of the skills taught to me early in life is how to cook BBQ. My father cook it, his faher cooked and so on. It's one of those things that you just better know how to do if you're a southerner. Knowing that, I would never go into the the BBQ Restaurant business because it's so difficult and there's soo much loss or shrinkage not to mentioin that pork is so expendive. For instance, You can buy a 25lb butt for about $30 and cooked properly will render about 10lb to 15lb of meat . Do the math. We wen't Big D's twice and all I can say is that it was ok, the meat was dry, over cooked, the portions were about what you should expect, The staff was very nice. the overall meal was bla. average, noting worth bragging about. I'll give them another try and get the chicken, ribs, or breakfast. I'd give this place a 5 of 10. The only way to get really gook BBQ is to find someone who knows how to cook it.

Very good food! We enjoyed the BBQ, okra, Mac n cheese and baked beans. The atmosphere was great; appropriate for a BBQ restaurant!

I had higher expectations after reading other reviews, and the gun shaped grill in the yard was neat to see. The price was a bit expensive. The food was average. The indoor dining was small, they are definitely focused on their takeout customers. On a plus side, the service was really quick.

Satisfied every time I eat here. I've tried everything from pulled pork to the ribs and all I can say are good things. They have a variety of homemade sauces so all pallets can walk away with a smile. Happy eating.

The ribs were mediocre. They don't serve alcohol and you can't bring your own.

Came here around 6:30 on a Saturday evening. I saw 4 people order the beef brisket, and each of us got 2 or 3 pieces of beef. The brisket wasn't particularly good, and the portion was incredibly small. I notice there are pictures of pork here, but none of the Beef Brisket Plate. Someone else ordered the double meat pork and chicken plate, and that was a decent amount of food, but they didn't like the quality either.

I love this joint! Great pork meat perfectly smoked and some good fixins! Sweet tea and cobbler! Good to go!

Big D's has become our "go-to" BBQ joint in the Gainesville/Cumming/Dawsonville area. It's small. It's quiet. It's affordable. ( If you think Big D's is expensive, you haven't been to the big chain BBQ places around! - and the food is only 1/2 as good as Big D's - for twice the price! ) And the BBQ? First rate, esp. the "Pork Brownie" and the fried Green Beans. The sweet tea is always perfect and if you haven't tried the ribs, they're as good as any big-name BBQ joint anywhere around. We do wish they'd move out of the small building they're in and get their own place, but that's our only complaint! Try the fried green beans. Trust me.

The cashier/server was very nice and was happy to explain some of the many menu items displayed on the wall near the cash register. She had to explain what the "brownie" was because it is NOT a dessert item. We were a party of four adults and two four year olds, We ordered 2 brownie plates, a hoosier burger, and a chicken and pork plate. Our sides were fried okra, baked beans, french fries, coleslaw, and macaroni and cheese. For appetizers we had the fried pickles and corn nuggets. The corn nuggets were standard pre-frozen nuggets. The fried pickles were a disaster. They were far beyond over cooked, brittle, separating from the batter, and tasted like the frying oil and nothing like a pickle. The pulled pork brownie was smoky flavored heaven. No barbq sauce needed. Though the selection of sauces was strictly North Carolina style (vinegar based) they also offered a mustard style that was rather good. The Hoosier burger was supposed to be a bison burger, bacon, cheese, and bbq coleslaw (vinegar bbq sauce mixed into the coleslaw) on garlic Texas toast. The only thing I tasted was the coleslaw. I had to uncover the bacon and wipe it off to appreciate it's taste. The pulled chicken also was very smoky, but dry. The sweet and spicy bbq sauce complemented it the best and added some moisture. The fries were...fries. They weren't crispy, but they weren't soggy either. I couldn't confidently tell if they were pre-frozen, but I wouldn't be surprised since the corn nuggets and the fried okra was also. The baked beans were THE BOMB. Just right sweetness and not too bold. Very nice blend of seaonongs. And lastly, the macaroni and cheese. It was better than average and definitely not the powdered from a box variety. Overall, it was good. If I go back I would stick with the pork brownie and baked beans with a sweet tea,

My husband and I passed this on the way to Amiacola Falls. Because we both love BBQ, we knew that we had to stop by after our hike. Let me tell you, it was the only thing that got me up those 604 steps and then some. Since we had gone out to hike on a weekday and got back to Big D's around 3pm, the place was empty with only one other customer. It was like having the whole place to ourselves! There were some other customers coming in and out, but for the most part, we were able to enjoy our meal. We both got the World Famous "Brownie" Sandwich, which was "hand pulled outside pork, with all the smoke and rub flavors, topped with Big D's spicy ranch and served on BBQ toast." The sandwich was spectacular! The pork was flavorful and the spicy ranch balanced out the pork very well. I was surprised, having never eaten a BBQ sandwich with spicy ranch, but it definitely went well with it. Close by are the North Premium Outlets so that is another plus. I'll definitely be going back!

We stopped here on a trip back from Helen GA. We didn't want to stop at a chain restaurant and the pig on the roof seemed like a good omen for a BBQ restaurant. While this place has the ambiance of a good BBQ restaurant, for the most part the food is lacking. I had the chop pork place which was really dry and did not have much of those delicious burnt exterior pieces. My wife and sister in law had the combo plate with ribs, chicken and pork. The ribs were OK. Had a nice flavor, but I've had many that were better. The chicken and pork were again very dry and lacking in flavor (though the sauces helped disguise this). The hush puppies were really good, but the rest of the sides were disappointing. All in all, not the worst option in the area (Ruby Tuesday really sucks). But we wish we had just gone to Long Horns instead.

The best dry-rub ribs anywhere! -The staff is friendly not over the top -The prices are good what you expect -The pulled pork is on the dry side with heavy smoked flavor, no fat found -The sauces are great, even mix of vinegar with sweet=great blend! -The ribs are the best ever (dry-rub style) I personally love these better than any I have had! -They also offer breakfast- very southern/country style Great also! -It is not the cleanest because the building is older and has been remodeled but good for a BBQ joint Big D's started out at windward pkwy, they closed and moved to Dawsonville and took over the building that Sanky's BBQ used to be in. Thank the Lord, because everyone used to call that place Skankys.

Ate here on a Friday night, choosing it over some of the chain type restaurants in the area. Good decision. The place is very small, and quite bus and has a great atmosphere. But did find a table and the staff is quite helpful and friendly. Had the pulled pork plate with baked beans and fries and the fried corn nuggets. I was disappointed because the had just run out of ribs, and I was really looking forward to trying them because they are St. Louis style according to the menu. Pork was good, not the best I've ever had, but certainly far, far from the worst. Had lots of burnt ends chopped up in it, which was quite tasty. Just about right on the smoke, and not greasy, but just a bit overcooked maybe. The Memphis style sauce is quite nice. Sides are average at best. The corn nuggets are good. Overall, would go back.

Cashier was nice / cooks were not - they got my order wrong and then said "we'll that's what you ordered" - food was okay but due to the crowdedness, I ate what I didn't order - may give it another shot someday!!!

stopped here on the way back from the outlet mall, more success on the BBQ than the shopping. pulled pork plate, Mac & Cheese & Brunswick stew was great. big portions- reasonable price. "buffalo bleu cheese chip" not so great. flimsy chips soaked in buffalo sauce. over all great local BBQ.

  • Luckie D.

This is a BBQ Joint. The pulled pork and Brunswick stew are top notch. I was impressed with the car on the ribs and the offering of both a vinegar and more traditional sauce. Finally the ribs were very tender with great smoke taste and good char but seemed fatty. Would I stop here again, of course.

I always stop here on the way to or from the north georgia mtns. BBQ sammy is GREAT. The Vinegar sauce is a bit too much, but the Sweet n Sour is pretty great. The potato salad is some of the best ever, and the bbq baked beans are good too. Best BBQ in georgia? no. But it is DAMN GOOD. Always a must stop staple.

I drove up to Big D's to give them a shot last week and I was very pleased with their ribs. If you think that it may be difficult to get your significant other to come up with you, mention that the Dawsonville outlets are practically right across the street. That way you can bribe them with shopping while you have some good BBQ,LOL. The ribs were very good and were St. Louis style and were very tender and had a good rub on them. I really liked their sauce, it had a little bit of a vinegar-y taste to it but that's to be expected since the owner is from eastern North Caroline I believe and on that note they do have a straight-up vinegar sauce like you would find in North Carolina but I didn't try that. The service was extremely friendly and the sides were really good. I had the hush puppies, which were absolutely fabulous and the potato salad, which was great too. They are also open for breakfast and judging by the pictures on the wall, they do pretty good with it. I didn't look into it but they have some type of pancake challenge....I saw a bunch of pictures on the wall of people sitting behind a small mountain of pancakes. The atmosphere of this place is really good, this place isn't a "BBQ restaurant", it's a "BBQ joint" and that's one of the best compliments that I can give to an establishment. I highly recommend Big D's if you're out this way.

Drove down from Chattanooga yesterday to battle the outlet scene. On the way out I nearly just hit a chick-fil-a but then saw the smoker in action out front. I was only there by my lonesome for the duration of a sandwich, but my entire experience was exactly what I was looking for. Chicken BBQ was the best I can remember--unbelievably tender and flavorful with tons of smoke. Sando, tasty crinkle fries (w. Old Bay I think?), and a sweet tea for less than $8? That's cheaper than most fast food joints. If you're in the area, hit up Big D.

Unexpectedly good! You see it attached to a gas station, so I did not have my hopes set too high, but wow was I so pleasantly surprised! GREAT food, but just know others have found it out, so if you go at lunch, even on Saturday like we did, expect long lines and few empty tables. Totally worth the wait though!

This is some damn fine barbecue. When we moved to Georgia seven years ago, we tried every joint that was touted as "the best barbecue in Georgia." All of them left us wanting for more (Fox Bros. - Good, not great; Sprayberry's - Wretched; 'Cue - Pretty darned tasty; Swallow at the Hollow - Good; Dreamland - Terrible). Three or four years ago, we were drawn out of our sad no-barbecue state when Big D's opened, just a few miles from our house. This stuff is the real deal. The pulled pork is awesome -- just the perfect amount of smoke flavor. And tender! The baked beans and potato salad are tasty. And you have to try the battered and fried green beans as an app. Those things are as addictive as fried dill pickles, and the remoulade dipping sauce is outstanding. Highly recommended if you're heading up to the North Georgia Mountains for any reason. Just hang a right on 53. It's right there next to the gas station.

Best St. Louis pork ribs. They were smoky, had a char on the outside that was money and were very tender. I cant stress how great these ribs were. Hidden across the street from the outlet center. Stopped own the way to Helen and glad I did!

  • Melissa H.

My 1/2 and 1/2 chopped pork and chicken platter was flavorless and dry. All the sauces were good, but not good enough to make up for the tasteless meat. My husband ordered the "brownie" platter (all the little browned tips and ends of meat) and it was MUCH better than mine. I don't know if it was an off day in the kitchen, or what.

Really cute place. We had the Pork "Brownie" Sandwich and green beans and it was great! "Brownie" is pulled pork with skin and rub still on it. We should have shared one- very filling!

We did a dine in for lunch at Big D's today. The restaurant was filthy, with a layer of dust on the paper towel holder on our table. The food was served luke warm, and the BBQ was not great. Fried green beans were great though. I would not recommend this restaurant until they clean the place.

We eat here almost everytime we go up GA400 to camp and find it consistenly good - we usually keep it simple with bbq sandwiches and a couple of sides. I prefer their sweet and spicey sauce (they have 2 different kinds on the table), and I think their hush puppies are worth noting - small, but crispy on the outside and fluffy, corn-sweet on the inside. Only thing I've ever had that was a disappointment was a pork loin breakfast biscuit. The biscuit was quite good, but the pork loin was bone dry :(. Otherwise, everytime has been a hit.

  • J. W.

Excellent St. Louis-style BBQ. It's a little small, and not much on atmosphere, but the food and friendly service more than makes up for it. We had the full stack ribs and our little one had the bbq chicken. No complaints from anyone. Because they follow the St. Louis style, the ribs are cut from spareribs to make a more uniform, rectangular rack. Three styles of sauce on each table (sweet, North Carolina and South Carolina) round out one delicious experience.

Went here today with my two aunt and grandmother...all were super happy. The bbq pork is so good...service was wonderful and quick considering how busy they were. The slaw was okay, but loved the hush puppies, yummy mac and cheese and perfect sweet tea...will definitely be back!

I stumbled upon Big D's BBQ. It is a true "hole in the wall". It shares a building with a gas station at the corner of Highway 53 and 400. You wait in line on the left to place your order and then make a 180 degree turn to your right to wait on your food. There is a small dining room with about a dozen tables. It is a friendly welcoming atmosphere, strangers will speak to you and help you get seated. The BBQ is so delicious. The brisket sandwich was the best I ever had, no fat, fall apart tender and the smoked flavor was not too strong, just right. The pulled pork sandwich came with enough meat for two sandwiches. There was not a speck of fat, just tender juicy pork. One of the best things about the food are the two free little hush puppies that come with your meal. The prices are so resonable. The cole slaw is too mayonnaisey and needs vinegar. They were out of Mac and Cheese both times that I was there. I only get up that way at Christmas when I shop the outlet mall but I will try to come up with other reasons so I can eat at Big D's

Excellent "Brownie" BBQ sandwich. The spicy ranch sauce was amazing

A-OK: The pork brownie was better than the other chopped meats we all tried. The sides were good but unremarkable.

Whenever I'm near the outlets, I always try to stop by Big D's BBQ! Amazing hole in the wall BBQ restaurant. Try the brownie pulled pork (all the browned bits) it is DELECTABLE. All of their sides are ample and filled with Southern goodness~ Yeehaw~ It's not the cleanest place, but it does the job :F

Hate to say it but after considerable forkdowns of BBQ here, my consummate emotions of this place is truly mixed; the kitchen seems to run on a hit or miss fashion when it comes to their BBQ and sides: one day, or week, the Pulled Pork is phenomenal with a hearty smoked flavor and melt away texture, the next time it is dry as a bone with little flavor at all: next comes the Ribs for which I have yet to experience the, "meaty St. Louis Cut" over the favored Baby Back cut; the ribs I have had are sparsely meated, dry textured, and overly flavored with a dry rub as thick as the meat on the bones: the chicken has been so-so as well, more often dry and lacking flavor, but sometimes juicy and delicious: Mac & Cheese continues to highly disappoint as it has no flavor to it: Baked Beans are little more than enhanced canned versions: Green Beans are great with good flavor: Cole slaw has been FRESH and tasty every time, but runs on the sweet side, which I like: Fries and Hush-puppies consistently fresh and hot, but often sparse in serving size and proportion: Individual sauces (Hot&Sweet, NC Vinegar, SC Mustard) are hit or miss and truly taste better when experimentally mixed together; I honestly do not like their NC Vinegar version by itself as it's overpowering mix of vinegar and spices do not bid well on the tongue. The service has been fast and friendly every time and the place has always been clean when I have visited. The decor is welcoming and sports enthusiast homey (GO DAWGS!), but I have found that Big D's BBQ lacks culinary consistency in most of their menu items. More often than not, the food is served barely warm, has mediocre taste and inconsistent proportion, But all is not lost when visiting Big D's as the BEST menu item they offer is the, "Pork Brownies"! The Brownies are what pulled pork is about; decadently moist, perfectly smoked, ultimately flavorful and leaving one for want of more, more, MORE! The "Brownies" alone is a five star standout for Big D's and despite the other menu item let-downs, warrants my continued return. In my book, Big D's Bbq is a 2.5 out of 5 on the BBQ scale and if everything on their menu followed the Brownies suit I would happily give them an all-star salute.

  • Shannon B.

Best BBQ ever! Try the 'brownie plate'. You won't be dissapointed. Only bbq that I've ever eaten without sauce and with my fingers only. Yes, it's THAT good. They serve crinkle fries and the sandwich comes with a ranch-spicy sauce that I opt to get on the side for dipping my fries in. If you like something with a kick - try the sauce!

  • Carl M.

Good BBQ ribs and the fries and slaw were middle of the road. Very small dining room. I will eat here again but won't go too far out of my way.

  • Amanda H.

The 1/2 chicken is really juicy and tender and comes with an unbelievable sauce. It is literally one half of a chicken. The green beans are really good and came with a lot of bacon. The mac n cheese is nothing special but not bad enough to take away any points.

Was a frequent visitor of big D's. But after last night not anymore. Waited for our order over an hour! Our number was one, They never called our number! So I got a hold of one of the cleanup girls! She Took our receipt to the counter and never came back to tell us what Happened! By this time I am so pissed and hungry I go up to the counter and ask where our food is! The woman in the kitchen said that she called the number and someone took it! I told her she did not call our number they just never made our food! I told her she needed to do something give me a T-shirt she said she couldn't do that! Not a manager I would hire! Very rude no customer service! So I told her again she needed to do something! Finally she said she give us a rack of ribs I said fine! This is an hour now food still not done! Finally the food comes an hour and a half later. Some other manager comes over a guy! He apologizes.! We get our food I'm eating green beans and there's a here and I didn't complain I will never never come again! And the chicken and pork that I got wasn't worth the money! Too Young staff working there! Hire some reliable people!

After I ran a search for 'barbecue' on Yelp search, I ran across Jamie R.'s review of Big D's all the way out in Dawsonville. The fact that they relocated out here from trendy Windward got my attention. Did they head out looking for more authentic BBQ lovers or just to escape the competition of 'Cue? The prospect of a food field trip was way too tantalizing, so I called some friends in North Forsyth County and off we went. My friends drive 60's era muscle cars (one owns a 69 Dodge Charger 'General Lee') and have never worn ties, khakis, or wingtips. Think black tees, blue jeans (NOT baggy), and work shoes and you have perfect focus. The only thing weird about them is they don't drink alcohol. Root beer does it for us. This place used to be Sanky's and featured awful mystery meats covered with coagulated sauces, so there was anxiety that we would be snookered by the new owners. We arrived and were greeted by a rich tantalizing aroma of hickory smoked pig. The parking lot featured not a single minivan, sport sedan, nor non-work truck. A Dawson County Sheriff's car sat at the entry along with two county work trucks. Walked in to a well-worn interior, ordered from a very friendly lady at a short counter off of a huge wall-mounted menu. We were assigned numbers and went to a pass-through window when the cooks called our numbers. Grabbed some plastic utensils, fffhissshed ourselves drinks from the soda fountain, and grabbed chairs around worn tables. My pulled pork plate came with my choices of seasoned green beans (not canned) and mac 'n cheese, topped with a big ol' slice of plain white Texas bread, two tiny hushpuppies perched on the side. Let me address the hushpuppies: I swear they were THE best I've ever put to mouth! The pork was nicely smoky and moist enough to be eaten with no sauce, but I made a mix of 50/50 vinegar sauce and tomato-based sauce, flamed it with a little Tabasco and enjoyed myself. The beans were great but a lil salty, the mac 'n cheese so-so. The guys liked their sandwiches in proper buns, and proclaimed the BBQ chicken 'damn good'. I've got to follow this up with an investigation of the stew and the ribs, but for now it was worth the ride..

You can't help but notice the pistol smoker out by 409 when you drive by. Well maybe now that 400 and 53 are having roadwork done, you might, but that's where you want to turn your car and head on on. This place has great BBQ and on the weekends they serve breakfast till noon. They roast, smoke, cook everything here so you walk in smelling the good ole smell of BBq. They have everything from burnt end to pulled pork and ribs. You can get family packs, lunch time meal specials or even individual meals complete with sides. My go to Is the ribs with potato salad or pulled poker with fried okra. They have 3 different BBQ sauces as well that range from Memphis heat to South Carolina mustard along with the North Carolina vinegar. Not much in terms of seating or space, but your here for the food, not the decor. Oh and on your way pick up some funny shirts.

"When we leave the South, I'm really going to miss places like this" - so I told my wife as chowed down at Big D's. I've always seen my time in Atlanta as more of a pit stop on the road of life, but Big D's is a good reminder that when it comes to amazing BBQ the goods are not evenly distributed throughout the country. Everything, other than the 25cent charge for a styrofoam water cup, was pretty much perfect. Oh, and they should get a liquor license and serve beer! We had the ribs and the Brownie Sandwich (burnt ends from pulled pork, between two pieces of Texas toast). Both were absolutely amazing. The Brownie Sandwich was fantastic and generous, and the ribs were perfectly done. Meat cooked to the perfect consistency, solid flavor, and the bbq sauces are so delicious - very impressive for St. Louis style ribs, which are often hard to get perfect (they proudly do not serve baby backs). Of the suaces I liked the St. Louis sauce the best. The brunswick stew isn't available as a side and costs extra, but is well worth it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the bbq ribs with the sweet nnq sauce. The meat fell right pf the bone and was so tender delicllcious. The mac n cheese was also good. The hish puppies were ok. Overall this was a great meal. My only issue was that was a bit cold...but I still ate it all up :)

Just finished up eating at Big Ds. It was pretty good! We got the brownie sandwiches, fried okra, mac n cheese, and potato salad. The environment was very family like and close knit which we liked. The woman who took our order was incredibly nice and helpful! Next time we are in dawsonville we will for sure stop by!

Really enjoyed the brownie plate with fried okra mac&cheese and ribs. You can definitely tell that they have been smoked for fourteen hours. My only complaint is that no sauce is added which lets you pick between the different sauces available but doesn't allow for it to really soak in all in all would recommend to anyone looking for great pulled pork and southern style food.

So the biscuit is what I call "cat head" sized and nothing short of breakfast nirvana. Don't miss it!

Absolutely love their sausage and gravy biscuit bowl! Can't say enough about the brownie sandwich, yummy! The owners got this right, for sure!

Bottom line: really tasty BBQ meat in a small place with classic BBQ decor and flare. The perfect BBQ dive. Perfect plate: brisket with hushpuppies and baked beans. This is a small place where you order at a counter and they'll call your number in about 10 minutes. There's a seating area inside with about 12 tables, and there's outdoor seating, too. It was busy when we went, but we got a table and the turnover is fast enough that no one had to wait more than 2 minutes while we were there for a table to be open. I got the combo plate (pork and chicken) and the boyfriend got the brisket plate. Both come with two sides. The brisket was delicious -- tasted like a cross between a smoked ham steak and roast beef. They have 3 different BBQ sauces, but I always taste the meat before saucing it, and this meat was darn tasty. I'm not a fan of BBQ chicken because it's usually so dry, but this chicken was moist and tasty. I didn't even add sauce for most of the meal! They've got a mustard BBQ which was my favorite for the day. The regular Memphis BBQ sauce is a tasty, classic BBQ sauce, and then there's the vinegar BBQ sauce. All solid. Sides: the BBQ baked beans are perfect. Not caramelized super-sweetness like many BBQ joint beans, but perfect baked beans with just the right amount of smoky sweetness. Mmm! The hushpuppies were also some of the best I've had around. Mac and cheese and green beans were serviceable, but I'd skip these options to try others. Fried okra was sold out -- I hear this happens so get there early if you want okra! The decor -- covering every spot of every wall -- perfectly matched the divey BBQ feel. This isn't THE best BBQ I've had (you'd have to drive all the way to Atlanta for that), but the decor certainly bumped up the rating. If you're at the outlet mall, skip the food court and stop here. It'll be worth it!

Love the "brownie"sandwich and the 3 different types of bbq sauce on the table. Service is fast and friendly. I can't believe Guy Fieri hasn't been here yet for Triple D.

I first tried this place when we moved to the area and searched Yelp for recommendations. Thank you fellow Yelpers!! We ordered several BBQ plates for our moving crew and the cashier assured me I'd be back for more. She was absolutely right! I will keep going back until I've tried everything on the menu. It is that good! I can't wait to try their breakfast!

I usually eat somewhere twice before writing a yelp review, but the meal I had at Big D's today was so exceptionally good, especially given the wasteland of locally owned dining that is Dawsonville, that I feel the need to immediately share my experience with the (yelp) masses. Attached to the BP gas station just across the street from the North Georgia Premium Outlets, Big D's has a small dining room and a few tables on the shady front porch. Consult the menu on the wall, order at the counter, get your own drink (Diet Dr. Pepper on the fountain and fluffy ice FTW!), and wait for your order number to be called. I stuck with their "world famous" brownie sandwich, a combination of outside pulled pork (the bark), topped with spicy ranch (that's not really that spicy) on top of buttered Texas toast. The meat portion is incredibly generous for a sandwich, and it had a wonderful, smoky flavor and a deep smoke ring. I like that they leave the pork in big chunks, and I found it very moist without being greasy. A pair of hushpuppies came on the side, and they were solid, with real corn kernels. For my side, I was thrilled to see that they had fried okra as an option, and it was fantastic, certainly some of the best fried okra I've had, though not *quite* as good as my all time favorites (Chicken Express in Athens and Daddy D'z in Atlanta). This was a wonderful lunch and a convenient spot to grab a bite after a long morning bargain hunting at the outlets. While my star rating might be closer to four if this was in Atlanta, this is certainly as good as it gets in Dawsonville!

Big D's is my go-to place for a delicious, satisfying breakfast. Their lunches are great, too, but I can't stress enough how pleased I am with the fantastic breakfast offerings available every day. Enormous pancakes, fabulous biscuits, and all of your morning favorites expertly prepared. You should definitely try the breakfast bowl: eggs, cheese, sausage or bacon, biscuit, and grits or gravy served mixed together in a bowl. It will change your life, guaranteed. Then you can come back later for a terrific BBQ lunch.

The ribs and the brownie plate were fantastic! Good smoke line on the ribs. 3 choices of sauces: sweet with a kick, vinegary, and bbq mustard sauce. The brownie plate (burnt ends of the pork) was my personal favorite. Choice of two sides per plate, we tried mac n chz, potato salad, fried okra, and green beans. The fried okra was arguably one of the best I have had. The rest were yummy, but standard. The hush puppies were delicious and had pieces of corn in them, which was a nice touch. Could have been luck of the draw, but the line was pretty short when we got there (noon on Saturday), the food was served quickly, and there were plenty of tables to choose from. Seemed like it started to get busier closer to 1pm. The service was great, the cashier was personable and friendly and the staff made sure we had everything we needed.

First time for breakfast huge biscuits any way you want it...bacon,sausage, eggs, cheese...pancakes are the size of your plate. Next time I have to get the hash browns they look GRAEAT! They open @ 7am and all the regulars show up.

Back for the wings as promised. They were good. Big D's advertises 'No wimpy wings' and they aren't lying. I got twenty, mild, and they were big time. Jumbo wings, cooked crisp, very flavorful and juicy. The sauce was good. Had really good tanginess and some heat on the back end of it. And on the bottom of the pile? Wing soup. A little inside joke which means they dump lots of sauce and it settles under the wings. I would only wish that they would serve a really thick ranch sauce, ala Atlas, but no worries, it's still tasty.

I usually don't write reviews, but after I ate here I was amazed with the quality of the food and service. My wife and I came in on a busy Sunday afternoon. The place was very clean and the service was prompt. We ordered the jumbo pork sandwiches with a side of slaw. The sandwiches really were jumbo and the size was excellent in proportion to the cost. The taste and quality of the meat was great and the slaw sides were perfect. When we are back in the area we will defiantly be stopping back in!

This place is cute & clean on the inside. The food was good overall. The portion was small, and it's on the expensive side, though - over $14 for a brisket plate!! The brisket was tender and very flavorful. Don't care much for the 3 sauces provided - they are a bit too sweet. The potatoe salad was too creamy and not enough flavor, and toast was over-toasted, otherwise, we loved the coleslaw and the hush puppies.

Oh man this stuff is good. So good I feel like I'm rolling out the door after I've finished eating lunch. If you like the hard smokey flavor of some BBQ with a little heat and an abundance of their signature rub go for the "brownie pork platter". Makes my mouth water just writing this! The brownie pork is made up of the exterior meat directly exposed to the smoke and where their rub is applied. This meat they use also gets some mild caramelization in the smoking process. They call this caramelized, smokey, seasoned and slightly spicy meat their " brownie". Take that brownie pork and add some of their seasoned ranch dressing plus their awesome coleslaw you got as a side throw it on a bun and pow, you are well on your way to a food coma. Just add an ice cold beer to make it perfect (you have to supply your own beer). I prefer to eat my brownie platter as a sandwich. If you do too, ask them to substitute the Texas toast that comes with the platter with a bun or two. I get an extra bun with my platter, its only $0.35 and well worth it.

Came in yesterday with high expectations after reading Yelpers' reviews, but we were very disappointed after eating here. Bottom Line: the meat was dry and lacked flavor. The plain white bread served with the meal added nothing to the dish (wasn't even toasted). The sides (as one reviewer noted) are forgettable because they're from a can. I had the pork ribs with "Brownie" pulled pork, and a double serving of green beans. Th ribs were very tender (fall-off-the bone tender)--that's what has earned them 2 stars!! But surprisingly they lacked flavor (simple salt and pepper would suffice). The "brownie" pulled pork was dry and tasted just ok. My hopes were dashed eating the "brownie" because I love the taste of caramelized meat! My daughter had BBQ chicken with fried okra and Mac N Cheese. Some of the chicken (which is served pulled from the bone) was so dry it was inedible. The Mac N Cheese--FOR-GET-ABOUT-IT! Not homemade, not creamy. So that begs the question, Why Not?! The Cheese (if that's in deed what it was) separated from the Mac! UGH! Was that a sign it was from a box or old? Granted, we came in 15 mins. before closing. But that is no excuse for poor quality, even at the end of the day. My money doesn't lose some of its value when the sun goes down! And there's no excuse for not whipping up homemade sides!! I can't brag about the BBQ sauce either. There were 3 sauces at each table (a big plus in my book) but the one promising heat DID NOT deliver (a big minus). Two of the 3 sauces tasted just ok-- nothing noteworthy. The third one (vinegar based) I did not like. There are a couple of good points: daughter liked the fried okra (it was not my preference). The green beans had bits of real bacon in them. And the folks behind the counter were very friendly and welcoming! It's for their courtesy that I feel a dash of regret for giving this place a low rating. But I'm sorry to say, Big D's has committed the biggest sin in BBQ--serving dry, tasteless meat!!

Their breakfast is awesome!!! Huge biscuits... BBQ is average to slightly above. They have 3 different sauces to chose from : Memphis, Vinegar, and Mustard. The rubs are very good. Great key lime pie.

I haven't revisited since my negative review, so I can't give it 5 stars, but I am very pleased with how the owner handled the incident that gave my wife and I such a bad experience. It appeared to be an isolated incident and the employee has been fired. The owner was very friendly, compassionate, and respectful in reaching out to me to apologize. I'll give them another shot next time we're in the area!

Big D's has become a must-visit place whenever I'm done with some kind of group outing in North Georgia. There's always a bit of wait, but it's not an impossible line. They have a pretty large menu which has all the usual items and they do each of these items pretty well. I had the 2 meat combo plate which included ribs and chopped pork. I really like the different varieties of sauces they have on the table - I think my favorite was the Carolina sauce and not because that's my name, haha. I also had the cole slaw and hush puppies and both are pretty normal. I like this place more than Slope's BBQ and most of the other BBQ places in the area. Seating inside is kind of small. Probably better for groups smaller than 5 people, but you could always take up more seats. Then of course there's outdoor seating. There always seems to be a good flow of people coming into this restaurant so there's always enough parking and enough seats. I think friends and I have made this our requisite stop for after a day at the corn mazes or hiking, or even after shopping at the North GA Premium Outlets.

Delicious BBQ! And the sides are spot on. I've eaten here multiple times and have never been disappointed. If you like Carolina style BBQ, their vinegar based sauce is excellent. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who was looking for great, fresh BBQ.

We always stop at buildings with bright pink pigs on the roof - it takes alot of courage to put a pig on your roof. So, in our never ending search for amazing BBQ we stopped. Big D's was PHENOMENAL. We ordered the basic - a half rack - and didn't expect much but OMG! The rub, the smoky flavor, perfectly sweet and tangy sauce and meat that fell off the bone and melted in our mouths... BBQ heaven. We just spent a week in Key West and had key lime pie everywhere.... Big D's was better than any I had in Key West. Hand on heart. My husband and I ate at a dessert restaurant in Key West named "Better Than Sex", we think Big D's should be renamed... Looking for reasons to return to Dawsonville!

Excellent St. Louis style ribs. Smoke was perfect and no sauce needed on ribs which is my measure of how good ribs are. Loaded baked potato was good also.

Really liked this place. Its not that expensive, but the food is really good. I got the pork, ribs, chicken plate and the ribs were practically falling off the bone. The selection of sauces is pretty cool too. Definitely coming here again when I come to the the outlets.

the first time i saw this place, i avoided it. i mean it's stuck to the side of a gas station. i went to the outlet mall recently and came across this place again. this time, i thought... wait a second... heirloom bbq is stuck to the side of a gas station, and it's damn good! and besides... yelpers gave it high marks. dead giveaway that it was going to be good. no parking. second dead giveaway -- had to pull around the back and saw a *giant smoker*. this was the real deal. the quarters are a bit cramped and logistically awkward. to place your meal, you walk past a little window where you can watch elves making your magical plate of barbecue... speaking of... i had the BROWNIE which was basically the burnt ends of pork. so good. i filled out a comment card answering the question about what i'd change if i ran the place -- more meat, less butter. the brownie was a bit heavy on the butter and light on the meat. the spicy ranch that comes with it... i had it on the side. it made everything else taste better as well as it turned out. :D try the hush puppies by the way. priced reasonably, friendly service... seating is a little bit of challenge. it's now our stop for good eats when we're up at the mall. YAY!

Everybody in the area knows the BBQ Is great stuff, especially the brownie plate. I want to comment on the breakfast, particularly the tenderloin biscuit. Just like Mom's, big, tender, lean tenderloin on a huge biscuit. You just can't get this kind of food anymore... Loved it!

My boyfriend and I always stop and get ribs here after going to the mountains. So great! I do think they put a lil too much mustard in the tater salad.... But, I preferably don't like mustard all that much! Great ribs!!

ATMOSPHERE: This is literally a hole in the wall restaurant attached to a gas station. Don't expect much as far as ambiance, but it is worth the drive for the food alone. SERVICE: This is a go up to the counter and order and pick it up when they call your number kind of place. It is what it is. FOOD: This is why you want to come here. The food is amazing. Especially the brownies. No this is not chocolate, this is part of their meat dish. I believe it is similar to what grill masters call hot ends, but it is soooo flavorful. The only bad part is that everyone wants it and they are always out of it. So call before going to make sure they have it. If you call early they can set some aside I've been told. All of the sides are typical BBQ sides, but are delicious. The brisket is also amazing. Key lime pie is very good as well. OVERALL: Food alone makes this place worth it. In the future, would like to see them add more locations, move to their own structure, and go more upscale similar to a shane's rib shack.
