My baby brother asked me, his distinguished elder sibling, to assist him in building a small reflecting pool replete with waterfall on his property in North Georgia. Along the way, we stopped at Danny's, a small restaurant just inside the city limits of Dahlonega. It's your ubiquitous meat and two plus bread, so I was only hoping that what I ate would not hurt me. Pleasant surprise- my meatloaf, lima beans, mixed greens, cabbage, and cracklin' bread were okay. The meatloaf was like my mom's, the mixed greens just like mom's (boiled to death with nary a trace of seasoning nor jowl-bleah), great lima beans and cabbage, and so-so cracklin' bread. And, yes, I got 3 sides just to see how those greens were, 'cause they looked purty. I think this would be a good place to get a hearty country breakfast before going hiking, rafting, or kayaking, but I'll check on that soon.

Danny's has become my go to spot for breakfast before I go work on campus at North Georgia which is close by. It's about a mile or so away from the campus. I'd have to say that a lot of local people come in here, but you will not find yourself out of place. It's the kind of spot where the local politicians and business people eat and shake hands. It was voted best breakfast by the local newspaper and they are proud of that. The food is decent. I mean breakfast is like pizza. It's hard to make it bad. I haven't had the gravy like the reviewer before, but the eggs, toast, sausage, bacon, etc. are standard. The coffee is good. I mean you're not going to get 5 star food, but take Danny's for what it is and you'll enjoy yourself. The service is top notch.

For country cooking buffet this is great. Had the grilled chicken lima beans and broccoli. Yummy. Just know this is a down home country place nothing fancy. Good food and good service!!!

It ain't fancy, but the grits and biscuits are spot on. Go fully old school and sample the salt cured ham, if you dare. Sub iced tea for coffee.

Stopped here for breakfast. Coffee was decent. After that, it all went downhill. I ordered the Mexican Omelet with a side of Cheese Grits. Both were not hot enough to melt the cheese. Husband ordered Oatmeal, Cheese Grits and bacon. The only hot item on his plate was the oatmeal. He also asked for a double order and was originally only given a single order. They did bring out more after we asked. We noticed that three other tables that came in after us were served their food before us. Not worth the stop.

A terrible experience! Most important, Danny's is NOT a buffet service, nor is it a buffet restaurant. If anything, it is probably best characterized as a cafeteria-style restaurant, meaning you pay for each and every item you eat, right down to and including an extra hush puppy or an extra piece of bread. They nickel-dime you to the point where you are charged for one or two vegetables or gravy or no gravy. Because of this nickel-dime system, you can run up your bill very quickly, and that is what happen to us. I should have known better when we first walked in. The place was empty, despite other restaurants in town being very busy on a Saturday night. Upon walking in, I told the ladies we were here for the first time, and I asked how did their ordering system work? I got a quick mumbled answer about one trip or a repeat trip and something about a menu. Well, it looked like a buffet (it is NOT a buffet), so we opted to pay for repeat trips. The confusion started almost immediately. Repeat trip means a repeat trip to get some more lettuce. When I went and got some more Lima beans and a hamburger patty, they hit us with another eleven dollar charge, on top of the $15 each we already paid for "repeat trip." So now I am up to $26 for a dinner plate and an extra burger patty, and this is supposed to be an economical place to eat? I think the wife wanted another hush puppy, and yup, got hit with a charge for that too. We were too afraid to eat anything else, but the wife wanted desert, so she asked if desert was included with the meal. Yup, they said it was "included." What they neglected to say, and we should have known by now is that it is included, but you pay to have it included. I think they charged us something for a glass of water too. For a simple country restaurant, we ended up paying close to $50 for two people who had some lettuce, a dinner plate, and desert for one person. We drank water only. Absurd! Danny's is a huge rip off! The staff is clueless. They have no idea how to handle customers by speaking clearly and explaining how their charges work, particularly to someone who is there for the first time. The food was luke warm, because they have the steam table turned way down low. All food items were bland and dry. The only good thing I can say about this place is that it was clean. It appears what few customers they have are a few regular senior citizens who come in to eat a small plate of food on a regular basis. This also led to another issue. I saw an elderly couple come in, and they were greeted by name. At this point, the employee told them their regular table was taken (by us). The old man walked past our table and gave me a filthy look. Ah yes, such a pleasant place to dine! Remember, if you do chose to eat here, it is NOT a buffet restaurant! And if you do come here with an appetite, be prepared to pay $25 per person, which does not include desert or drinks. Better yet, avoid this place and its clueless wait staff. Leave it to the few local senior citizens who eat here on a regular basis. Ironically, Dahlonega is such a great town, and it has so many great restaurants. However, Danny's is a restaurant you want to avoid, benefit from our experience. And PLEASE, stop calling Danny's a buffet restaurant. IT IS NOT A BUFFET RESTAURANT!

Stopped in at Danny's on a Saturday morning around 10:15. They serve breakfast until 11:00 am which is good. I had the Western Omelet, French toast, and grits. I was very surprised how good it was...especially the French toast with powdered sugar, made to order. They have been in business a long time and are friendly, which makes it worth the trip.

"Innkeeper! Where, pray tell, should be deign to eat breakfast?!" "Well, dear traveler, I would suggest Danny's. They are known for the best breakfast in all of Dahlonega." OK, the conversation wasn't exactly that Ren Fairey, but it was close. And our innkeeper did indeed call Danny's the best breakfast in all of Dahlonega which, in retrospect, may be akin to being the tallest midget in the room. Danny's is a meat-and-three on the outskirts of town. There isn't much in the way of atmosphere. There are tables and chairs (natch) and, for meals other than breakfast, a hot bar/cafeteria line that was being populated with foodstuffs after our arrival. So breakfast it was. The wife ordered eggs over medium (her standard) and bacon. I ordered the biscuits and white gravy. The positives: the prices were low. I'm talking 1987 low. I've gotten so used to paying $9 for a plate of eggs, I forgot breakfast is actually supposed to be cheap. The service was polite, though nothing spectacular. Unfortunately (because this is Yelp and there's always a "but..." or "unfortunately...") the food was not good. Yes, it's hard to screw up breakfast, but where there's a will, there's a way. (And also a guy who doesn't like to be called Billy.) I had expected a fine southern spread like Meemaw's. OK, not MY meemaw, being Asian and dead and all, but at least my wife's 80 year old North Georgia meemaw. Damn, that woman can drop a biscuit like nobody's business. What we got at Danny's, though, were doughy biscuits, white gravy in which I could still taste the flour (and notice I keep calling it "white gravy" because nary a sausage bit was found in it) and the hash brown I ordered was a travesty. Hand on the heart honest, it was a hash brown patty, the kind you find at McDonald's. Fer reals, yo? A premade, Costco hash brown patty? Best breakfast in this former gold rush town? This, my friends, was nothing more than fool's gold. Two stars.

Danny's Restaurant This little place is located on the right just inside the city limits of Dahlonega as you are going up the hill (from 400). We have eaten lunch here a couple of times and both times the food was good, the service was good, and the prices were good. I would go 3.5 stars if it were possible - but it's not quite a 4 star yet. I would recommend this place - great place for a quick lunch if you are doing a Saturday road trip and are in the Dahlonega area.
