This family-run business is a hidden gem! Fast, fresh food and friendly staff. If you haven't tried their fish tacos then you are missing out! Try them with fresh avocado and their delicious chick pea/corn salsa!

This place has such glowing reviews that our experience has me asking, "Did we eat at the same restaurant?" I had a chicken quesadilla with all the trimmings and it tasted like nothing. No flavor. At all. How was that even possible with all that pico piled on top? I poured a ton of salsa and queso on top to try to save my dinner, but even the queso was bland! :( My husband had steak tacos and after several bites, he stopped eating because he thought the meat tasted weird. This NEVER happens! My husband will eat anything! I'm so disappointed because I never expected not to like this place! The ladies working there were very nice and it seems like a cute little family restaurant that I'd normally love to support, but unfortunately - we won't be back.

I was attending an event at Browns Bridge Church in Cumming, so I immediately hopped on Yelp to see what food adventures I could have while in the area. I couldn't pass up a taqueria with a 4+ star rating. What a great find! From the pictures on Yelp, I had already decided that I was going to try the fish tacos. When I walked into the restaurant, I was slightly disappointed to see the typical burrito buffet set-up. I was concerned I had gotten excited about another build-your-own burrito joint (which I love, but was not in the mood for that night). But don't let the set-up fool you. The interior of the restaurant is cute and colorful. The atmosphere is very casual. There are some tables for four, as well as some community tables. Because I was dining alone with Lena Dunham (or her book, anyway), I grabbed a seat at the front bar. It is not a terribly large place, but a great deal of business on the night I visited appeared to be take-out (although there were a number of patrons inside enjoying dinner, too). There is a small outdoor seating area. The cashiers and burrito artists were very friendly and helpful. I ordered a chips and queso and grabbed some salsa from the salsa bar. I also ordered the fish tacos, as I had planned. They were incredible. Chips were fresh, salty and crispy. The fish tacos came two to an order and were huge. They were stuffed with fresh veggies and a heavenly chipotle sauce. I hope to return to try the tamales and the chilaquiles one day. I would definitely recommend it if you are in the area.

Came here today because they had a great ScoutMob deal. I had always heard of this place, but I had never thought to stop in. The interior of the store isn't as uniform as Moes or Chipotle - it is a collection of colors and succulents and it is all together delightful. They have a great visual menu on the wall to help guide the selection and ordering process. The service was so great - the woman helping me (possibly one of the co-owners?) told me some of her favorites and explained the best things to try. Also, one of the people working there come by to our table to ask how everything tasted - this is always a good thing and reflects so positively on the business. I ended up ordering the nachos with the works. I had shredded chicken with black beans, queso, smoked tomato salsa, sour cream, gauc, and sauteed onions. HELLO. This stuff was good. My sister and I literally raved about the chips for five minutes - they tasted like they had been dusted with some delicious spices and they were firm and a lovely tan color - they were perfect for dipping and help up so well in the nachos. We also remarked on how fresh everything tasted. My sister had the fish tacos and she talked about their chipotle ranch sauce for the rest of the evening. This is such a better (and cheaper) alternative to the Moe's down the street. I can't understand why people are wasting their time and money going to Moe's when they have more authentic and flavorful Mexican cuisine options down the road. Will be coming here more often!

Friendly and helpful service. The food is very fresh and everything we ate was delicious. As others have said it is like a much better version of chipolte. The food portion is quite large. They also have a great scoutmob deal. I really wish they didn't use styrofoam for their fountain drinks. By chance I ordered water and it came in a recyclable plastic cup. I would definitely recommend this place and I will be back!

This place is sorta like a moes but much better with authentic style and ingredients. Prices are reasonable and the food so far is great. I ordered the fish tacos based off previous reviews here on yelp and they were delicious! I plan on coming back and trying different items from the small but appealing menu. Breakfast is also served on the weekend which I might have to try! Only wish they had some sort of dessert to offer :(

I love this place! Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, I am in. The torta is great (and something you don't find often), the chilaquiles are quite nice, and the breakfast tacos are also well worth the trip. Add to that very friendly service from locals and it is the total package.

  • David J.

The Best breakfast you will find! Excellent, fresh tasty simple menu. Great family (always there with a smile). I eat here very often and have run into many regulars along the way. I would normally recommend something but everything is great.

Can we please get a branch in Atlanta?! Picture a Moe's crossed with a Chipotle except with actual flavor, fresh ingredients, and owned by locals. Love it! The portions are large, and items like fish tacos are stuffed with grilled fish and topped with a variety of flavorful and spicy salsas and slaws. There is no ambiance per se, unless you count the wooden picnic table you can eat at outside. However, when the prices are so low, and the food quality so good, you don't really care where you eat it. Orders come with chips (freshly fried, perfectly salted) and their generous salsa bar, which included an avocado based, dressing like dip that was really tasty. It's not quite worth a drive from Atlanta, but if you find yourself in North Cumming/South Dawsonville (such as near the North Georgia Premium Outlets) and looking for a quick bite to eat, this spot is worth a visit.

A good place for a quick bite. Fresh ingredients go into building your entree before your eyes (think Moe's but better). Their fish tacos are really good if they haven't run out (which can be a bummer when that's what you're there for). Only complaint is they use way too much onion in guacamole.

We're at a softball tournament down the street and looking for something other than McDonalds and came across this gem! I had the breakfast tacos with egg and chorizo. It's was awesome! I'll probably be back for the fish tacos at lunch.

Fresh food and excellent taste!...I got a chicken salad and the girl behind the counter was very nice in helping me customize it!...u can taste the freshness of the veggies and the chicken...Once we were done, both the cook and the girl behind the counter checked to see if we liked the food...how nice!....will be coming back for sure...

Fish taco's had very little fish in them, can't understand why because we were the only two people in the place, and we saw them load up the grill with many (12+) fish fillets...it was late in the evening. hmm. My steak burrito was excellent, however. The seating area is as low-key as it gets, sloppily painted 2x4 construction. Nice salsa bar area, unlike others that charge for every serving. No sour cream on salsa bar. Not a bad place overall, just not exemplary in some aspects. The staff is very nice.

Love this place and the family who owns it! All of the ingredients are so fresh and delicious! I tried it, went out of town for several weeks and was looking forward to getting back so I could have Mestizo again. It's reasonably priced, friendly and the food is delicious.

One of my favorite restaurants of all time. Best fish tacos I've ever had. I've never had something that wasn't amazing, lunch/dinner or breakfast.

  • David W.

The veggies and meats are prepared fresh every day and you can taste the difference that makes! It's simple, quick, affordable and most importantly delicious! Breakfast, on Sat and Sun only, is outstanding.

My family and I eat at Mestizo at least once a week and I can honestly say that the experience has never been less than fantastic. Not only do they offer a much more fresh, cheaper alternative to other taquerias à la Moe's, Chipotle, etc., but they offer a genuine hometown neighborliness that can't be found in many other places. First of all, the fish tacos are some of the best I've ever had. I've never thought to ask where the tilapia they use come from, but judging by the taste alone, it's fresh fish. Second of all, the staff seems eternally optimistic and willing to serve with the broadest smiles you've ever seen. As a regular, I may just have a bit of a bias, but it's a good bias to have.

Fantastic mix of an authentic family owned Mexican restaurant with the look & feel of a Chipotle/Moes/Baja Fresh. We had amazing grilled fish tacos and chicken quesadillas. They have unique toppings like chickpea salad.

  • Carlo S.

Went there to support the locals instead of the chain place down the street. Food was good, but being family run...thought it would have been better. Will go again though.

We stop in at least once a week because the food is perfect and fresh every time. The family who owns it is very friendly.

  • Christopher S.

Fish tacos, taco salad, quesadilla what we ordered. Very fair prices. All made with fresh quality ingredients in a kitchen you can watch while they make it. Only reason not five Stars is they could stand to tidy up and stock the salsa bar and beverage station better.

Our favorite for after church on Sundays. Love the sopa de pollo (chicken soup) the generous burritos and tacos. Always freshly prepared and tasty.

Some of the best and freshest food in town! Loved their Torta sandwhich, great friendly people running the place too.

Went here yesterday instead of the chain burrito place down the road, I wanted to support a local business. The staff was very pleasant. My girlfriend and I were impressed.

I eat here every weekend for breakfast, since they only do breakfast Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. They only have 8 items in the breakfast menu but they are all done exceptionally. I recommend the breakfast tacos. Everything at breakfast is made to order and is fresh. If you are not as adventurous like my wife they do pancakes great as well.

This place is wonderful. its funny because the food choices are pretty limited in this exit. in fact, I think ths place dominates the Mexican business, unless of course you keep going down the street to the other Mexican restaurant by the shopping center a tenth of a mile away. as other reviewers have stated, this place is a cross between a Moe's Southwestern Grille and a Chipotle. So whats the difference? QUALITY. the salsa bar is wonderful, the football sized burritos are a two meal challenge, and even the service was great. Sure, Moe's tries to pride itself by welcoming its customers as they enter the door, but everything else seems so robotic. Not at this place at all. as for recommendations, i'd definitely try a burrito. guys, you're in for a treat. they're portions are huge and you just can't beat it for the price. i'm still debating if they grill the fish on the fish tacos or if they come off of a delivery truck. regardless, they're AMAZING. bottom line, food is fresh and incredibly tasty. families will get a reprieve eating here because its fairly cheap. big guys will love the challenge of trying to eat a whole burrito. come to think of it, i'm kinda craving some chips and and few tacos right now.

Some of the best fish tacos I've had yet! Fresh ingredients, friendly people.. It's simple and refined yet more than I could ask for! Come here on your next trip to Cumming!

Best breakfast around! Get there early because items sell out quickly (pancakes!!!) and seating can get limited. Everything is fresh and cooked to order. Friendly service. Never had a bad meal here!!

Always good food at a great price. Combine that with the friendly staff and a yummy breakfast menu, and it's one of my favorite go to spots. Support local.

Fish tacos were just awful. The fish was a grayish brown color and just plain smelled bad. Neither my wife or I could eat them. Seemed like they were sitting around all day in a pan. Maybe we just caught them at a bad time, but we will not be back.

  • Kristie D.

I eat here at least twice a week. The food is so much better than Moes even though they have pretty much the same menu. They give you huge portions and its all great, especially the Jo Mama burrito. Terrific salsa bar. Couldn't ask for a better, faster, friendlier staff.

Wow! What a great place! We are so fortunate to have this restaurant near our home. We love everything they make and the folks behind the counter are very happy and provide wonderful service. You truly need to check this place out!

They are uh-mazing! Better than any build your own mexican. The girls are super nice and hospitable.

Fresh Chicken breast filled Burritos and great portions! My favorite is the Cilantro Lime steak tacos, talk about well seasoned meat!!! If you think Chipotle is the best thing since sliced bread, then you are lost. This place has a Chipotle like atmosphere and service style with a much better flavor and no thigh meat burritos!!! On Tuesday nights they have a family special where you can get a meat filled burrito, chips, salsa and a drink for 5 bucks!!! When they first opened my husband and I were going every other day!!! If you go closer to closing time sometimes they are trying to get rid of the meat and they'll put it in your burrito. We've left there with a small child in our bags a few times!!!! I love, love, love, this place!

Went here on lunch and the place was ok. Nothing really stood out as great, bit then again nothing was bad. Overall adequate.

There are very few places that get me to eat there multiple times in 1 week. I have found just that place in Mestizo. Whether for breakfast lunch or dinner this restaurant is always a good idea. I've tried nearly everything on the menu and never disappointed. Some prior reviews compare Mestizo to Moes or Chipotle and while it is the same type of self-service plus restaurant the food is of no comparison. The food is always fresh and served at the perfect temperature. The family who runs Mestizo seem genuinely pleased to see all of their customers and greet everyone with a smile. I could not recommend this place more highly!!!

Fantastic! We shared the fish tacos, a beef burrito, soup and nachos. Plenty of food for a family of four. The fire roasted salsa was the best! We'll be back.

Great food, either lunch or breakfast on the weekend. I've been coming here for at least two years. It's one of the hidden gems of North Forsyth. The staff is extremely friendly, they care and it shows. From the fresh food to the hip music and home-like atmosphere, this is a must for any foodie looking for a place off the beaten path and outside of the perimeter.

I had the chicken fajita tacos. The food was delicious, fresh and authentic, not to mention the people are very friendly. I will definitely be making another visit. I want to try their breakfast.

This place consistently delivers amazing food and service. You'll never go back to Moe's after eating here. I love their nachos for lunch or dinner. Their "fluffy pancakes" should be illegal. They are absolutely the best I've ever had. Try this place once and you'll be hooked.

  • Ethan R.

Mestizos is my absolute favorite breakfast spot around. Their huevos rancheros make me so happy, and the bacon and eggs are always cooked well. The staff is incredibly kind and helpful. I try to go here every Saturday for breakfast, and if not I get the tortas for lunch and dinner throughout the week!

  • Eric P.

Mestizo is awesome! It's like Moes - but waaaaay better! Seriously, the ingredients are fresh, they make their salsas fresh twice daily and the location is clean with friendly service. Their burritos are great but they also make sandwiches, tacos, salads and nachos. They have really good fish tacos, too, and they make everything to order right in front of you. They do catering also. This is probably the best fast meal in Forsyth. The portions are massive and the prices are really cheap. One burrito is often enough for two people, I would particularly recommend this for people who want to pick up dinner to take home!

Best Mexican food around! Highly recommend the fish tacos and especially the Tortas. I could eat them all day. I've been here 4 times in one week. Customer service is stellar as well.

Best burrito in north Forysth. Try the Chilaquiles.

Our family loves to eat here. The staff is fantastic, the food is always good, and it's priced just right. I seem to always get the nachos--their pork is yummy! Only 2 things need to change--get rid of styrofoam cups (gross) and get lemonade in the drink machine.

  • Joann G.

I have learned to just give a quick call first. When the food is this fresh and this tasty....it's worth the call! The family that owns it couldn't be any nicer. Just FYI...the Mexican fare is truly delicious but you must try the stack of pancakes.....best in the world. All of my kids are going to need a 12-Step program to stop eating them! This is the kind of joint you see featured on DDD. This place is awesome!

Great food with a friendly staff. Large portions of very healthy food! Best kept secret in Cumming!

  • Lauren J.

Chipotle sucks. I hate it. Moes is okay, but so corporate and always the same. Mestizo is a really good little place. It's quiet, clean and always good. I love the green (guacamole-ish) salsa. They have a great menu and the food is really reasonably priced. I've been here a couple of times and will keep coming back.

    (4)
  • Jason B.

If you like Moe's you should give this place a visit. Nothing fancy, but a bit more authentic if that is your style. Very friendly staff and they are willing to make things just about any way you want it. If you want something different try the fish tacos with the spicy mayo.

    - The Staff is fun upbeat and super friendly -Very clean and well kept -Does not have a funky smell like other Latin resturants do -The tortas are the best(sandwich) and salads not soupy in the bottom -price is about $7 per person -watch out for the danci

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
