While home in Columbus visiting my mom, my dear friend from high school days ( fifty years ago ) took me out to eat here. Mario's was an interesting place, in downtown Columbus. First of all, there is no elevator and I was a bit dismayed by all the stairs. Short of breath, I finally made it to the top, to find myself in a cavernous space, almost devoid of people. I thought that was a bit unusual for a Friday night. At any rate, we order appetizers of spanokopita, hummus and baba ganoush, all of them absolutely superb. Having lived in the San Francisco for nearly 35 years, I was a bit surprised! The wine list had no Greek choices on the menu but there was a pretty decent Australian shiraz ( the name escapes me ) for $25. There was also a full bar and other U. S. wines. We had been told by the chef, who knew someone in the group, that the special, lamb shank, was excellent - a couple of us ordered that and it was really delicious. Another in our party had the lamb shish kebab and it, also, was very good. I don't see how the place stays open, however, unless they get more business than they do. Perhaps it really swings on Saturday night or has a huge lunch following.

The most talked about restaurant in town? Errr...being talked about it not aways good ;) The food was ok, very heavy moussaka, i think there was a bunch of mayo in it?? The babaganoush was good, and the falafel is very good, so appetizers wise it was good. It was definitely very empty, so not sure how it lasts, but it's close to our hotel, so we may be back.

I have to say the food was pretty good but it took them a while to get it to us. The only thing I can assume is everything is made fresh hence the reason it took so long. There wasn't much of a wine list and certainly no Greek wines to speak of. The place was pretty deserted when we were there so not sure how well it is doing or if it will continue to remain open. So if you'd like to try this place better go soon.

I was looking for an all mediterranean restaurant in the area and came across this restaurant in the listings of Yelp and Urbanspoon.com with high marks. I fell in love with mediterranean cuisine in NYC and was looking for that kind of authenticity. I read where the restaurant was ran by a middle eastern family and was looking forward to trying it out. The hours aren't traditional and we unknowingly arrived an hour before the 5pm dinner opening. It was ok because we just window shopped a while. Then we went back to the door to wait and apparently were semi-greeted by either the owner or one of the owners who noticed we were waiting and unlocked the doors for us. She was very nice. The restaurant itself was on the second floor of the building and the stairs are steep. I do not know if there is handicap access to this place because it wasn't apparent. Just one set of steep stairs. The inside of the restaurant looked a little dated in decor and looked as if it was once or currently doubles as a night time bar/dancing establishment. The floors are mostly rugged concrete with one area that is tiled a bit nicer. The chairs are high back, plush in various dated designs but pretty comfortable. The tables have that faux leather look and ours had cigarette burns on it. They really need to pay attention to cleaning the salt and pepper shakers on the tables because they were so dirty that I couldn't tell if they had ever been cleaned before. There is mismatched wall art and plastic flowers/plants galore. I remember telling my husband that their food must be phenominal to be surviving as a restaurant. I was right. The food was wonderful! We had the Meza app which included the falafel, tabbouleh, hummus and baba ghannouj with warm fresh flat bread. We ate so much that we were worried we wouldn't be able to finish dinner. For the entree I had the gyro plate and they had a special that wasn't on the menu for lamb shank that my husband ordered. The gyro plate was wonderfully cooked and the rice was made just right. The lamb shank was fall-off-the-bone. I kept trying to bribe my husband for more after he let me try a piece. The portions were on point and at the end we were so full. My only complaint that is I ordered the merlot and was served considerably less than I am used to getting for $5 a glass. It was rather empty when we went. Just us and an older couple that arrived at the same time. No one else arrived even as we left and it was a Saturday night. I hope the word gets out because it really is good food. Just needs an interior designer's helping hand!

A diamond in the rough. I lived in the Middle East for six years. The food took me back. The owner, Sylvia, did all of the cooking, as well as served us. We weren't in a hurry, so it was nice. I felt like I was in her kitchen at her home. I ordered the combination platter, we also ordered the vegetarian appetizer. All of the food was fresh and made from scratch. Sylvia chatted with us and told of her story of how she came to the states as a young girl when her father decided to raise his children in America due to the persecution they faced in Jerusalem because they were Christian. Her story just added to the entire experience. There is no elevator, or handicap access. This is due to regulations involving the historic significance of the building. I am going back on a Friday or Saturday to try her lamb shank. Overall, I would rate the restaurant very high. I am not the kind that judges a restaurant by the amount of money spent on "atmosphere". I judge it by the food, cleanliness and service that I receive. Sylvia found herself a new regular customer.

I have been trying to find a Middle Eastern restaurant in Columbus ever since I moved here after asking a lot of people from the area if there was one and finding none. I was surprised to find that this 'Mediterranean' restaurant downtown served kefta, dolmades, and kabobs. I was surprised by their hummus, a nice, smooth mix that was made well. It definitely tasted very fresh and came with pickles which had a nice, cool, tart counterpoint to the hummus. I ordered the combination platter for lunch which had a little bit of everything that had to offer and their house salad. Maybe it's because I hadn't had any Middle Eastern food in so long but every thing was delicious, the kefta especially was really good it was seasoned just right-I've had some plain ground beef disguised as kefta but this wasn't it, it was a tasty, moist well cooked piece of meat, with the rice a nice complement to the kefta, chicken and falafel. If I get the yen to eat hummus or kefta again I'll be coming around here again.

We are new to the area and wanted to try the "famous" gyro. Sadly for us we were only able to stay for about two minutes before we were attacked by roaches of all different sizes!!! At that point we stood up and left before even taking a bite from our food. Please save yourself the nausea and stay clear of this roach infested place

We had dinner there again last night,had the chicken and mushroom dinner. It was really good. There latest inspection sign is posted at the top of the stairs 100%. It amazes me how This place is never busy. With all of the lame over priced restaurants downtown ( not referring to the Loft)Don't let the long staircase turn you away. Silvia is great. If you have a party of 5+ ask her about the Family style dinner. She will lay it out. It's a little more expensive, but all kinds of food.

Had the gyro, was delicious. Got it with onion rings and they were nice and crispy, although a little bit greasy. Also, got the turkish coffee, and it was faaaantastic. Will be back!

We had the hummas appetizer. Very good. The lamb was tough to cut but seasoned well. The rice on the side was very good also. I believe she told me it was gluten free. Sylvia was very nice and personalbe. If the had air condition i probably would have given them another 0.5 star

It was about four years ago when we found this gem. Excellent place of the normal path...the owner and staff really took care of me and my soldiers. We enjoyed an authentic Mediterranean meal with about six courses. You will find folks really enjoying themselves when the music gets going. I enjoyed the entertainment. A must try at least once.

Best Greek food in Columbus. Awesome gyros for a great price. I had the lunch special gyro with fries. The tzaziki was delicious. The gyro meat melted on the tongue. The seasoning on the French fries made it great. I was really surprised the place wasn't full. For $7, I challenge you to get a better meal in downtown. They do some superb catering to at events I have been to.

Tucked away, we found this gem by accident, as our intention was to have lunch at another Mediterranean restaurant we discovered. Now to get the preliminaries out of the way, yes there is a hike up the stairs, yes the decor is very dated, and the final yes the restaurant was empty. With that said, my husband and I had a wonderful time. I ordered a turkish coffee, fattoush and lahmajun little pizza. My husband ordered a gyro and onion rings. Our orders were timely and our server was attentive. It was our first authentic experience beyond the basic hummus, gyro and falafel. Although dated, the atmosphere was cozy. Almost like being invited to a dinner at someone's home. The food was great. Here's the thing, if you have never had true Mediterranean cuisine there will be nothing in your taste bud's reputoir to compare it to. The taste was so clean and fresh. Everything was definitely homemade and made to order. It was a real break from the deep fried south. Even the fried onion rings which were beer battered seemed like you could taste each ingredient. Should this hideaway catch on, you may be stuck making reservations. We will definitely be back. ....

Loved it! Amazing food (I had the shish kabobs and my husband had the lamb special which literally fell off the bone) and the service was good too. Everyone was very nice there. Oh and we didn't see any roaches like the previous reviewer said. We will go back for sure.

The food was good. Had the gyro wraps and they were meaty and the cucumber sauce was delicious. Make sure to call and check if they are open if you plan on going after 8:00 p.m.
