Food wasn't bad, it's pub food. But the service is atrocious. I think it's one of those places that as long as you know somebody you'll be fine, but if you walk in off the street you're just gonna get ignored. I sat at the bar on a slow Wednesday, it took 15 minutes for anyone to talk to me. Got one drink my entire meal, the bartender refilled it after my meal and just poured coke straight over the watered down ice in my cup, after I'd already been without a drink for 15 minutes. The staff were goofing off in the back and "hanging out", very little work being done. Just not well run. Overall it took me an hour and a half for a burger and fries. We're opening a new business in the area, this place could've seen some more business from me and my crews (30+ folks), but apparently this new guy wasn't worth the trouble. Decent food, but avoid like the plague if you want to actually be served.

Love the firecracker sliders, the B.A.T., every cheeseburger, pork nachos, the list goes on and on. Full bar. Lots of live music. Hoppin' joint. See you there.

Music blaring, pimento cheese with cucumbers so acidic you could not taste the pimento cheese, and horrendous tater tots. We are talking deep fried no potatoes left on the inside. If I threw one I'm certain it would break a window. The only reason for two stars, the bar.

I was feeling the Hero tonight I was plenty surprised. The fries were great. Hot out the fryer.

I think I was drunk while posting my first review but I was speakin the truth. We recently went back and I want to remember to get the mushroom and arugula quesadilla- it was so good!!

During my visit to Tennessee, I stopped in Clayton GA to have some lunch. When I was walking along the sidewalks of this cool old town, I ran into this Universal Joint restaurant. This place used to be a gas station, type Back to the future movie during the 60s, I guess. They had a nice selection of beers. I asked for a nice IPA and they recommended: - Two hearted Ale from Bell' s Brewery Inc. Beer advocate rates it at 95%. Another website, mlive.com says that ratebeer.com named this beer the best IPA in the world. Try it. You will decide if this is true or not. I had with my beer, Pork Tacos, "house-smoked pork with BBQ sauce, slaw & fried onions. They came with chips and sauce. They were really good. The southern taco style was present. I enjoyed better the Mexican style with cilantro and lime, but I was not at a Mexican restaurant, I was in Clayton, GA. The environment is great, I had my lunch at the patio during a beautiful fresh and sunny day. Servers were very helpful and nice overall. I enjoyed my time here.

This is a great spot to stop at if you are staying in or driving through Clayton, GA. They have a good beer selection and the food is pretty good. The staff is ok, they were really great when picking up the check with their tip in it but not fast any other time. Overall good food at an average price.

I loved sitting outside at this restaurant. The food was great, very different, but so good. We had the spicy egg rolls for a starter and I LOVED them. My husband had the buffalo chicken sandwich and I had the brisket sandwich. The waiter said the brisket looked like it might have been cooked too long. He asked me to try it and if I didn't like it, he would grab me something else or a different sandwich. It was PERFECT. My husband ended up eating his and half of mine. I would go back here again and again.

Great Burgers in a surprisingly hip place for a small town. Speciality beers on tap as well as your favorites bottled. Fair prices and great quality foods. Very little inside seating and single stall bathrooms. Kid friendly until certain hours and this is very well marked with signage. I also liked that it is pet friendly in the outside patio seating area. Server even brought out water for the pup next to us.

Awesome hometown pub atmosphere with great choices in beer, a full bar. We ordered quesadilla and chips and queso. The food was good but the salsa was just okay. Wifi is available but SLOW!

Monday May 25, 2015 Is this under new ownership or management????? 4 of us WAITED 1 hour and 6 minutes before our food was served. My supposed Buffalo Chicken quesadilla was terrible. NO meat and what looked like some kind of paste slopped on the tortilla. I peeled open all the pieces to show what was lacking and left. Bad service and food.

Love coming to this place. We visit the Lake Burton area every year and I look forward to eating here at least once. Food is always very good, love the Hummus plate, never h ad anything bad.

I originally wasn't going to choose this place to dine at, however it seemed that everything else was closed on a Monday night so off to Universal Joint I went. In hindsight, I'm glad everything else was closed. Universal joint is well deserving of 5 stars. The service was solid and they have an awesome bar/casual/seat yourself atmosphere. They have a solid beer selection on draft, solid as in if you can't find something that suits you, then you're probably doing it wrong. As for the food, we got the hummus to start. I don't really know much about hummus, but I do know my taste buds were very much appeased with this offering. The highlight of my visit was the burger. I got the U Joint burger which comes with pepper jack cheese, jalapeños, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onions and ranch on the side. I ordered it medium rare an that's exactly how it came. This burger was juicy, succulent and generally way better than I was expecting. I highly recommend Universal Joint and their burgers.

This place is pretty cool. Great beer selection. Amazing tater tots. Great pork tacos. Delicious homemade margaritas. Very cool vibe and fun atmosphere. If you are looking for a great patio and a good beer this is your place to go when near Lake Burton.

  • Valerie H.

The food was very good and the atmosphere was really cool. The converted filling station is a great idea! The service was friendly but a little slow, so that's the reason for 4 stars.

We stopped here after a day rafting the Chatooga and boy were we starving. This is not the place to come if you want to eat quickly. The food was fantastic, but it took an hour and a half to get nachos and 4 entrees. I had the brisket sandwich au jus, my husband and son had the burger with blue cheese and bacon, and my other son had the buffalo chicken sandwich. My tots were nearly ice cold after the long food wait, but at least the sandwich was hot. I asked for water early during our visit and after 40 minutes had to request it again because the server never brought it. When we had finally eaten and tried to pay our bill, we waited 10 minutes and finally my husband took it up to the hostess to see if she could process the payment. She simply handed it to the server who was off chatting with another customer for a while so there we stood for a few more minutes until my husband raised a ruckus with the manager. The manager was very understanding, apologized and comped the meal. We had no intention of that. We just wanted to eat in a timely manner and not have to request things multiple times and chase around the server to get her to process our payment. I would return based on the quality and taste of the food and the great service by the manager. But the service needs work so go only when you have plenty of time (and aren't starving).

This was an excellent stop after a day of hiking and swimming. The waitresses were very attentive and took excellent care of my 12 year old daughter's needs. I read reviews of poor service, but if you go at a slow time the true intentions of customer service are evident. The burgers are perfectly prepared and enough to feed two people. The best part of the meal was the hummus and olive tapenade appetizer. It was as good as anything I have had. Thank you for a great meal from your California visitors.

  • Carrie B.

It's good, but there was nothing outstanding about it and the service was enough to drive me crazy. I don't claim to be needy, but waiting was par for the course here and finally decided we would have to take our food to go or risk not being able to get our puppies from boarding back in Atlanta. The food was good, but messy for the road, which was expected, the tots were great, nice and crispy! Good beer selection and great patio for a nice day/evening hangout spot.

First time to Clayton - curb appeal drew us in - quality & freshness of the food will bring us back. Crisp Mixed green salad with grilled shrimp and house made citrus vinaigrette dressing - excellent. Hubby says the pimento cheese burger was wonderful!!!

We have been several times now to this cute place. Love sitting outside on the patio of this old gas station turned restaurant. Food is always good and fun atmosphere. Would definitely recommend giving it a try.

Blackened Flounder tacos ROCKED! Also roasted tomatillo queso was fantastic! This was a great find and definitely coming back. Or server David gave us great service and was very attentive. Outside seating was really pleasant. Definitely coming back for the food and laid back vibe. And they have water bowls for dogs.

  • Michelle L.

Pros: Delicious burgers (super juicy patties, really fresh veggies on top), tater tots as the default side; inventive names for their burgers, plentiful outdoor seating, freshly fried tater tots; reasonable prices, friendly wait staff; funky Austin-like vibe; and did I mention the super tasty tater tots? Clearly one of the coolest casual places in town to gather, grab a drink, and eat a delicious burger (with a side of tater tots) Cons: a bit of a wait on a Saturday afternoon, and the impending threat of death by yellow jacket (via the plentiful patio seating mentioned above) . Would totally come back... maybe just not during late summer, when the creepy crawly flying things are out to play.

Visited The U Joint while staying in Clayton and it was absolutely wonderful!! The hummus and olive tapenade was the perfect starter served with warm pita and fresh veggies. My mom and I also enjoyed black bean burgers done "The Old 1-2" style and couldn't have been happier. The atmosphere was funky, relaxing and refreshing! Lots of outdoor shaded seating, cornhole and live music on the weekends. If you're a chocolate fanatic try the fudge brownie. It was super rich and definitely delicious! I would certainly stop here again if I was passing through.

My partner and I decided to spend a few days camping on Black Rock Mountain in order to get away from the city's crowd and heat. It's always so much cooler up in the mountains and it's nice to spend a long day hiking and finding swimming holes to take a quick dunk in. After all that exercise we need some food and beer...and FAST! I chose Universal Joint for it's primarily good reviews, the fact they have a draft beer list that includes some local brews (NC primarily but a few GA) and that they have outdoor seating. Here's the rundown... Food - We only had some tater tots so I can't speak for the other menu items. Think hamburger heavy bar food menu with a few upscale twists. Vegetarian and gluten-free options available. The tater tots were damn good though! Large portion served up crisp with a side of blue cheese dressing. Carb-o-licious! Service - Our server, Shaun, was very friendly and helpful. He was training someone to serve but it never felt weird to have 2 people check in on us. They offered some suggestions, told us about the specials and brought us everything we needed in a timely manner. Top notch! Space - There was an enormous amount of seating at this place and the majority of it is outside. On a 70-something degree day that's just what you want. Everything was beyond clean and there was a good deal of signage explaining everything except whether or not you seat yourself. I'd suggest something along those lines to avoid confusion? Downtown Clayton seems to be, for the most part, full of thriving local businesses including this one. At 6pm on a Wednesday the place was hopping! Very comfortable with being corporate or try hard. Beer - So cold. So cheap! Not an extensive list but impressive for a tiny town. We drank 4 beers and got tots for $20 including tax. Unheard of in Athens/Atlanta. I'd certainly return to try out some other menu options and to see if anyone is playing up on that nicely built stage they have in the corner. There's also a fire pit but that'll have to wait til fall. Dress is very casual. We were in hiking books and mucked up tshirts and wet hair and no one looked twice. I saw a party of 10 have a table set up for them in less than 5 minutes so I'd say on slower/moderate nights large parties could be easily accepted.

We vacationed this year in Clayton GA and there actually isn't a lot of night life around there, which is understandable, its not a city. Its a cozy small town with many daytime attractions. With that said U-joint (as the locals call it) is the place to go and have a beer and relax and mingle with the locals and hear about the inside scope scoop from the local attractions and which you should go to and which ones are just tourist traps. I think the only improvement would be the service, the staff was friendly just slow, and this is the only reasons they didn't get 5 stars, but during the wait time for the staff it did allow us to speak with the local more. What does each star represent? 0 * Unacceptable 1 * Poor 2 * Improvement Required 3 * Good 4 * Very Good 5 * Outstanding Quick rater Cleanliness - 4 Food Quality - 3 Food Portion - 3 Food - 4 Location - 5 Entertainment - N/A Ambiance - 5 Sitting outside and seeing what they did to this retired gas stations was awesome. Make sure to ask they turn al lights on that go around the outside. Service - 2 Price - 3

I can't really comment on the food here. My friend and I sat for 15 minutes without any sort of acknowledgement from the 3 waiters or the bartender. Eye contact was actively avoided, no water, no "be right with you" or " we're closed" (it was 1 pm, Wednesday afternoon, plenty of other customers). Nothing. So we bailed and went to the Clayton diner, which was old school charming. (See review of Clayton Diner). Screw this small town yuppie joint.

Great outside eating place for summer. Staff were nice and efficient. The food quality was very good. The salad with grilled shrimp was fresh and well seasoned, but it was smaller than usual for an entre salad. Seemed more like a side salad, so I was disappointed that it left me hungry as my main course. For over $10 salads, not a great value.

Cool place to eat. Feels like it's a locals-only place they let you visit, as opposed to something more tourist. Service is good and friendly, but not overly friendly like a lot of tourist spots. Had the black bean "non-burger" and it was excellent. Tots are great. Outdoor seating area is VERY nice, if you're there during warm weather. Will absolutely go back again the next time I'm in the area.

After a hot hike through tallish falls and a shower we checked out Clayton. UJ was perfect great service a good selection of beer on draft. The food was awesome I had the in house smoked brisket dip, hubby ordered in house smoked pulled pork sandwich. I opted for a side salad it was nice, fries where yummy with the pork.

We chose a Saturday when they were slammed and under-staffed, but we will still definitely go back. Had their special of the day (Brunswick Stew), which exceeded expectations by far. Actually, all of the food exceeded expectations - at first glance you would expect average bar food from a place like this. But the kids mini-cheeseburgers were delicious and the arugula salad with chicken was considerably more sophisticated than we would have expected. Yes the service was a little slow, but it was exceptionally friendly. Overall we really enjoyed our lunch.

Great dinner while vacationing in the area. Border Burger was cooked perfectly and delicious. Sat outside on a beautiful summer evening.

This is a go to place in Clayton. The food is really good. Our favorite is the u- joint fries. You won't be disappointed with any Item. Friday and Saturday night music. Sometimes great, sometimes not but always fun.

Absolutely outstanding food. Excellent friendly service. We ate here three times over as many days on our vacation. Many of the foods are locally grown. The menu is innovative and interesting. The owner stopped by to ask how things were and helped us did or waterfall destination for the next day. Two thumbs way up.

VIBE: Old Sinclair gas station. The bar is inside where car lifts were. Garage doors open up to outdoor patio area. This is truly a universal "joint" for all types of patrons - bikers, mom & dad with kids, retirees and everyone else. Has outdoor area that is dog friendly. ORDER THE: Pimento Cheese appetizer is very tasty and large portion. Burger was ok. Have craft beer on tap along with mainstream choices.

Cool location. Cool place. Cool vibe. Food is pretty good but I gotta tell you it was a small disaster. We showed up with 7 people got seated inside very quickly. This was the high point of our meal. (I'm just gonna give you the Readers digest condensed version of this adventure..) *The servers were slow, rarely seen and distracted. *The drink order/ food order / food delivery was s l o w. *My order was delivered by another employee and not correct. Our original waitress was MIA for so long I gave up and ate what I had. *Apparently there is one single unisex bathroom for the place and we sat next to it. Therefore at times there were up to 4 people waiting in line standing/hovering over our table waiting to do their business. Awesome. *Unfortunately there was some sort of Fly convention meeting close by. We were inside and were swatting like we were outside on a picnic. *The last aggravation of this meal was a third lady showed up to clear the table... She grabbed the glasses and somehow shattered one of the glasses sending flecks and shards of glass all over my face and chest. My wife and I gently and carefully made sure I wasn't hurt. I wasn't thankfully but if had enough at that point. Enough. For the record : none of the things listed alone is a big deal to me. I promise..but today was the perfect storm of all of these at one sitting . To add them up just made a mess and not the greatest experience. I feel pretty certain that I could go back tomorrow and it would be fine. But I won't.

Was at the universal joint recently. Seemed like it would be a good place to go watch the NBA playoff game and have a few drinks. Most places in the area close early, but this one says on their FB page as well as here on Yelp that they're open until midnight. When we got there just before 10, the server told me they were closing at 11. Was kinda bummed that they closed so early. Didn't get to watch the end of the game.

I am very disappointed. My boyfriend and I came here for a Labor Day lunch because the times we have passed by, it has been packed. To begin with, our service was terrible. He ordered a buffalo chicken quesadilla and I had a B.A.T (bacon, arugula, and tomato). It took 45 minutes to receive our food. He thought his quesadilla was fine, but my B.A.T was terrible. The bacon was so fatty that it was barely edible. On a brighter note, the tator tots that came with my meal were actually very good and very seasoned. If I ever decide to return, I will definitely order something else or just stick to drinks.

  • Ingrid H.

Visiting family in the area and had dinner here. Food was good, not great. Had fries as an app which were covered in cheese, bacon and jalapeños... yummy. Just your normal frozen fries, but with the toppings they were good. Again our meal was good, but atmosphere was fun. Some at our table enjoyed margaritas and some of the microbrews they have. I think we enjoyed the vibe of the place more than the food and will definitely go back. 3 stars for food... 4 stars for atmosphere.

We ate here 3 times on a recent trip to the mountains. Each time it was a real treat. My wife, who is a vegetarian, was very pleased to see a black bean burger that they made in house. She ordered a black bean burger and salad each time. I had a burger, the Philly brisket, and a lunch special NY strip sandwich all of which were delicious. The pretzels with the stoneground mustard may be the best kept secret on the menu. What a cool concept with great food. A new favorite when we travel through Clayton.

I would imagine most people have their favorite watering hole they frequent where "everyone knows their name." And while we were staying in Clayton only one night, it was not long before everyone knew our name as well. For you see, it just happened to be trivia night at the Universal Joint... and the first order of business was choosing a team name. Given the unseasonably cold temperatures northern Georgia had experienced the last two nights, it came to me in a creative flash (or maybe after a quick brew) that our name should be "Witches Titties"...as in it was colder than that at the moment :) So while we absolutely sucked at trivia, at least our name redeemed us and we were awarded a free round of drinks. After the trivia game ended, the revelry continued with several of the locals giving the snazzy karaoke machine a go. Generally the idea sounds much better than the actual execution. But that evening there were several patrons who stepped up to the plate and belted out a few tunes...proving once again that karaoke sounds--and girls look--better as the evening progresses!

We've eaten there several times. Food has been consistently good. My husband loves their burgers. There are probably seven or eight types of burgers to choose from...he highly recommends the Smokehouse burger. It comes with BBQ pork, BBQ sauce and fried onions along with tasty fries. It is not for anyone with a small appetite! I had the fish tacos which are served with fresh chips and salsa. Delicious. And, while I don't know this for sure, the salsa tasted like it was made there rather than out of a jar. The fresh cilantro in it went very nicely with the fish. We will definitely go back.

My wife and I ate there for the first time today! Fantastic food! My wife loved her chicken tacos and my Bleu Cheese and bacon burger was one of the best burgers I've had in a very long time. Tater Tots!!!!! Burger was cooked perfectly, med. rare. Becky waited on us. She was wonderful!! Will be heading back there soon!

We so love that Universal Joint has come to Clayton. Great atmosphere, large patio, fabulous beers on tap, some tasty food options (even for vegetarians) and wi-fi, which is particularly helpful for us. The staff even let us do a skype call in the back booth one time when we needed to contact family, and our internet at home was kaput. Now that's a caring business. Street parking. We're happy.

Amazing! 100%!!!! Great ambiance. Service was friendly and at the top of their game. Great local craft beers, delicious tater tots, try the chicken tacos, completely molest your taste buds. Spent about 3 hours here just relaxing and enjoying ourselves. Was like having two unicorns grant you tasty wishes. Completely worth the time. Enjoi!

Still great patio. Good wine. Again had the pimento cheese plate app....pimento cheese, grilled toast points, cucumbers & roasted peppers. My spouse had pork tacos....plenty of food there, son had Skye (veggie burger) & tots & I had the buffalo chicken sand w/ tots. Only complaint.....super tough chicken. very hard to eat, but the ambience & app made up for it. Service was ok, friendly staff.

I decided to go here on a Saturday night since I was strolling around town looking for somewhere to eat. They had a nice bonfire going and live music (which sounded better than most live music at restaurants). I ordered the pork sandwich and was surprised it was better than the pork at the last few BBQ places I had been,

Excellent food, really great price and decent service! I'd recommend splurging and getting an appetizer, especially the BBQ pork nachos. Everyone in my group was really happy with our food, and $68 + tip to feed four starving people after white water rafting is pretty darn good.

Service-so good we went back the next day! Food-excellent both times, burger and tater tots were as good as we read about, pimento cheese was amazing, portions were very generous...love the atmosphere too. Try this place for lunch or dinner!

I just met the rudest hostess in all of Georgia at the front door of the U-Joint! She should really be in a different line of work! We are new in town and don't think we'll ever find out how the food is, because she ran us off with her attitude. Hope the manager can identify and correct the lunch crew of yesterday.

This is such a neat place in the small little mountain town of Clayton, Georgia. It was an old garage that has been converted into a bar/ restaurant. The drink menu is quite diverse and the atmosphere is wonderful. They have a very nice outdoor patio with a huge fan and lots of tables. There is plenty to choose from on the menu and the food was delicious. This is a great little hangout spot in downtown Clayton!

We are new in town and don't think we'll ever find out how the food is, because she ran us off with her attitude. Hope the manager can identify and correct the lunch crew of yesterday.

Fabulous food in an old converted Simclair gad station! A Great place to chat up the locals in search for local hidden gems-waterfalls, breweries, white water kayaking-and on the way to the Biltmore Estate!!!

Service and food were great! And as per another reiview the chicken tacos will without a doubt molest your tastebuds, and add the pork tacos as well they'll get yah too!

Amazing!

Best burgers within 100 miles. Friendliest staff in Clayton.Try the craft beer samples to find the one that goes with your meals and enjoy. My favorite lunch spot in NE Georgia.

REALLY GOOD FOOD, clever envrions, excellent services. Traveling thru and had lunch in my first gas station garage!! I'd go there again and again and...I will if I ever go back thru Clayton, GA. Universal Joint gets my seal of approal (arrh arrh arrh)

  • David W.

  • Marti R.

Music blaring, pimento cheese with cucumbers so acidic you could not taste the pimento cheese, and horrendous tater tots. We are talking deep fried no potatoes left on the inside. If I threw one I'm certain it would break a window. The only reason for two stars, the bar.

    (2)

Love the firecracker sliders, the B.A.T., every cheeseburger, pork nachos, the list goes on and on. Full bar. Lots of live music. Hoppin' joint. See you there.

First time to Clayton - curb appeal drew us in - quality & freshness of the food will bring us back. Crisp Mixed green salad with grilled shrimp and house made citrus vinaigrette dressing - excellent. Hubby says the pimento cheese burger was wonderful!!!

  • Scott P.

  • Al R.
