The food was just not good. This was my first time here. The service was good but the food tasted prepackaged as if it wasn't made the "authentic" way. I knew it was going down hill when I ordered sweet tea, it was not even decent. Instead I had to order a coke. It just tasted like the food was.made with no love or care. The Mac and cheese...tuh #haveseveralseats the collards seemed as if they were overcooked and just a little soggy. THE PULLED PORK .... OVERCOOKED. NEVER coming.back. I thought there was hope when I saw the black cook but I was wrong. I'm augusta... The country. I know.what good barbeque is. Thanks for.reading.

Atmosphere - Ok; Reminded me of a dive bar but was clean. Service - Excellent; I'm a big fan when you ask for suggestions and are actually given suggestions instead of the typical "everything is good". Food - Good; I had the ribs which were tasty and tender. Both of my sides, mac & cheese and marinated slaw, were delicious. Since I don't like mayo I loved the slaw which had no mayo but was very flavorful. The cornbread was awesome. I definitely plan to return and try the daily specials.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner. Mostly. And mostly because of items besides the chicken. Dad likes BBQ, and Moe's is near me. One and done. Overall enjoyable, particularly the staff and the setting. Lots of banter with the guys at the counter and kitchen, where you see everything they're doing. This definitely seems like a place that gets regulars and frequent to-go getters. *Ribs were absolutely delicious, per Dad. *We both loved the mac&cheese (far better than what we had at Delia's the night before). Creamy without being cloying and seasoned just right. *The four wings we added were ok; good but not exceptional and a little saucy and kicky for me. I'd try them again if they had more than one flavor. The 4-for-$2.50 add on is a decent deal. *Dad got the coleslaw and the potato salad; he's a tough judge as he's one of those people who judges all Southern cooking against his mother's, aunts', etc cooking - he thought the potato salad was a little bland and the slaw pretty tasty but a little too vinegar-y. *I got the fried chicken special with the cucumber-tomato side (plus that m&c). The side was delicious, not too vinegar-y and a nice little seasonal treat. The fried chicken was well seasoned (and you get the whole shebang, so there was a lot of chicken) but too dry. I'd give this a so-so and probably try a different dish next time. Good little spot for those who don't over-think the this place v that place aspects of BBQ,

So I saw this place and just stopped in for a quick lunch and to my surprise, it is Bama style pork special day!!! I was both stoked and highly suspicious being from Decatur, AL (home of 25 time world champion Bob Gibson BBQ). So I asked what that meant to them and waited patiently for the words, "white sauce." To my delight, the words came. Ok. This dude knows what's up. Assuming it's done properly... I got Bama style pulled pork with white and red sauce (no slaw because I just am so picky about slaw it's not worth the risk), Collard greens and Brunswick Stew. The collards were quite good, but not my style with a touch of sweet and vinegar. I finished them as they were good, but the flavor of the vinegar stopped me from drinking for the pot liquor. I wanted more salt cooked in, but whatever. The pulled pork was on point!!! Excellently executed and the sauces were killer too. Actually their white sauce is a little sweeter (like Whitt's or Southern in Hartselle, AL) but still excellent. I devoured it happily! The Brunswick stew was crushingly good! Probably my favorite. I'd come back just for that alone, but the whole meal was very, very good!!!! I will add this to my required meals when in the ATL. CHEERS!!!!

The beans are amazing. I really could just buy a bucket of those and be good. The pulled pork is ok. Kinda reminds me of some South Carolina with a light vinegar touch. But their sauce is amazing. Pour enough on the pork and it evens out pretty good. The banana pudding is pretty good. I'd hit this place up again if I'm nearby. The prices are fantastic for the area.

Excellent! Loved the food. I had the shrimp po boy & it was Awesome! Very fresh & cooked perfectly. Beans & coleslaw were great too! My husband had the fried catfish & loved it. A friend had the BBQ sandwich and said it was good. Our server & bartender was great. She was very nice & attentive. We will be back!

Moe's BBQ is not bad but it doesn't hang with the best like Fat Matt's, Fox Bros, Community Q, and Heirloom BBQ. It's like better than the average joe but it's always steady and consistent. One menu item that stands out from the rest of them is their smoked wings. They are large and tasty. And they got like a $3.50-$4.00 add on if you want to add 4 wings to your entree.

Yummy BBQ!! I had a BBQ chicken sandwich which was quite good- and unexpected as it had a crunchy flavorful cole slaw on it. I'm not a coleslaw fan usually but it complimented the sandwich well so I'd recommend it at least once!! I'll try the platter next time. As for sides, the Mac and cheese was yummy and the sweet potato casserole was so very good! I loved the crunchy cereal topping in it! Great idea! Too many other good sides to try next - and the sweet potatoes was on the special sides menu for the day. I tried my husbands baked beans and they were good also. My husband loves this place and has been here before - we need to go back the next time we are in the city. Plenty of street parking in walking distance- and you might want to walk a bit after this tasty meal!

This place gets 5 stars for not only great food but for amazing owners as well. My company was volunteering at a local shelter and we brought food to serve to all who were there. We were throwing around different places and finally settled on Moe's Original BBQ. I had been here a few times before for lunch and was always happily stuffed when I left. Not only were they able to help us feed 300+ people, the two owners, Preston and Brett stayed with us to help chop up the meats (pork and chicken) and even made chili with the leftover pork for the shelter to have later. The food was great, everything was fresh and warm and they engaged with those at the shelter. We served them, pulled pork, chicken, mac n' cheese, baked beans and coleslaw. They had this white BBQ sauce that was delicious!!! (Don't worry I didn't eat the food there, they also catered for our company later that day) Top notch service and food, but more importantly top notch people :) We will order from them again for sure and I'll be eating there for lunch more often.

I am not from Atlanta and I ate lunch with a friend here. He is local. If you are not from the area, I think parking is a challenge. I arrived early because I figured parking would be an issue. The food was overall above average. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with two sides. The collared greens were really, really good. The red beans & rice was good. I ordered the sandwich "Alabama style." It was fine. We have excellent bbq where I live. The pulled pork didn't have as much flavor as the places I frequent back home, but it was definitely good. You order your food at a counter and they will bring you your food, as such, it is not full-service so there were no issues with that. The decor is fine. It was typical bbq restaurant decor. Would I eat here, at this location again? I don't know. I would eat at Moe's again. The restaurant itself was fine. I've eaten at the one in Hoover, AL. The decision to eat at this location depends if you are familiar with the area and where to park. If I was pushed for time, I would probably want to eat where the parking is easier. If you are a local, I imagine you are accustomed to limited parking in the greater Atlanta area.

Moe's is AMAZING!!! Minor request - a salad to enjoy my delicious, pulled chicken on?? White sauce mixed with bbq??

Originally from Memphis, I'm a snob about barbecue, proudly so. Like most places in Atlanta, parking is a pain in the ass. At Moe's they don't greet you when you walk through the door like their Mexican counterpart; however, you do feel an authentic barbecue joint vibe. In my opinion, there are far too few options at Moe's. You can choose between different plates of pulled pork, chicken, or ribs with a choice of a side, or you can go for a sandwich with the meats previously listed. I thought the pulled pork and chopped chicken were above average at best but can be bland if you are looking for more of a full meal. The sides aren't all that great but will do. You can choose from Lay's, beans, potato salad, coleslaw, or brunswick stew. In my opinion, the best order you can get at Moe's is the wings which are seasoned to perfection with a spicy, sweet dry rub. Like most things on the menu, the portions aren't that big, and I've walked out still hungry several times. All in all, Moe's is a decent barbecue joint where you can watch the game, drink a beer, and get average Georgia barbecue. Thanks for reading, Herg

Moe's Original BBQ opened Winter 2011 in the former Kool Korner location at the corner of 14th St. and State St, just a few blocks south of Atlantic Station. Moe's, not to be confused with the Atlanta-based burrito chain with the same name, is an Alabama-based regional chain of BBQ restaurants. The style of BBQ served is Alabama style. Though it's over two years old now, the restaurant still feels new and has been a welcome addition to the neighborhood. It's a fast casual BBQ joint where you order and pay upfront and then either pick up or have your order delivered to your table. Drinks, silverware, and condiments are self-serve and you pick up after your own table. You can easily see into this restaurant from the street as the building has huge windows. The inside has a rustic cabin look. There's a bar, open kitchen, and several HD displays usually tuned to ESPN. I really like the decor as there are respectful nods to the surrounding neighborhood and its history -- Georgia Tech, Kool Korner Grocery, and the Atlantic Steel Company. There are nice picnic tables out back. I also like the relatively late operating hours. The kitchen is open until 10pm every night except Sunday and the bar is open as long as there's a crowd. There are daily specials, occasional live music, and Thursday trivia night. There seems to be a good crowd for trivia. Expectedly, lots of Georgia Tech students. The trivia host plays awesome, crazy music such as the album "Thai? Dai!," a mix of experimental, niche mid-70s Thai... rock? Moe's menu is basic and much like any other Atlanta area BBQ joint. They've got pulled pork, smoked chicken, smoked turkey, wings, fried catfish, ribs, and a whole bunch of Southern sides such as baked beans, mac and cheese, coleslaw, and potato salad. Aside from the main menu, there's a chalkboard with changing special sides such as collard greens, lima beans, and broccoli salad. Prices are reasonable. Sandwiches are $10 and platters are $11. Each meal comes with cornbread, two sides, and a drink. Portion sizes are filling. Unfortunately, I think the BBQ is a bit underwhelming. I'm not sure what differentiates "Bama" 'cue from other types of 'cue in the South, but I don't see much difference between it and Georgia 'cue except for the sauce. My favorite BBQ to order at any BBQ place is pulled pork. It's kind of like my personal measuring stick. The pork at Moe's is pulled into moderate-sized chunks and topped with their relatively light and tangy BBQ sauce. The meat seems more dense and is tougher than most pulled pork I've tried in Georgia. Before sauce application, it isn't as juicy or flavorful. While it's not bad, I think it easily falls towards the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to pulled pork in Atlanta. The smoked chicken isn't much better. The dark meat sections are naturally tastier with fall-off-the-bone properties. However, the white meat is overly dry and I need copious amounts of sauce to get it down. Moe's sides fare better, but as a whole, are still mediocre. The mac and cheese is very good. Small macaroni noodles are used and there's just the right amount of cheese. The collard greens are savory partially because the greens are cooked with small slices of sausage. The greens are the most vinegary I've tried. The vinegar can hit you hard if you're not expecting it. The potato salad and marinated coleslaw are OK. The potato salad holds off on using lots of mayo and the potatoes are mashed up well. The cabbage in the marinated slaw is shredded fine and has a mild sourness to it. I still need to try the catfish and banana pudding, both of which have been recommended. Service is good. Orders are processed quickly and food comes out from the kitchen fast. Free street parking is available directly next to the restaurant on State and there's a small lot in the back. Be careful on the steep driveway.

Pretty good food. Good atmosphere and parking is a hassle, but I live in the suburbs. I had pulled pork sandwich, very good and good size portion. I had a side order of beans and they were excellent. Cornbread was average and banana pudding was very small but tasty. Potato salad was dry and I would not recommend it at all. Over all, nice place to visit and I plan to go back.

Great atmosphere, terrific food (I love the wings, pulled pork sandwich and skillet corn) and wonderful staff. Good place to watch the Braves in the summer and college football in the fall - beware, there is heavy loyalty to both Tech (right down the street) and Alabama. I think the owners went there. Do yourself a favor and check out Moe's for some Q!!!

  • David K.

The one distinguishing item they have here are their smoked wings. Their wings are large, and if you ask to make the wings "extra crispy" it' can be even better. After coming here several more times I think my go-to meal is the smoked wings, with fried green tomatoes, and banana pudding. It is a hearty and filling meal and I find myself not being able to finish the jalapeno cornbread because it's so much!

I was in town for a Georgia Tech football game and walked from my hotel (Courtyard Marriott) to Moe's. It was good, not great. The spot is walking distance from Tech and while there's a nice atmosphere (TVs to watch Sportscenter, CNN, etc) the food isn't anything to scream about. It's good, but not excellent. If you've been to Fat Matt's you'll be slightly disappointed with Moe's. I had the pork platter (which came with black eyed peas, collard greens and Oreo pie. (The pie came in a tiny container you'd expect to get ketchup in. Was good, but enough for one spoonful, rather than a piece of pie.). Still the pork was fine, the sauce was fine, but fine didn't equal "wow, I have to come back here next time I'm in town."

Good southern BBQ, bar atmosphere, and hospitality. Our first time in Atlanta and on a college tour with our son. Pulled pork was good but the BBQ beans were awesome. Easy walk late at night from our hotel just off of GT campus.

I eat here whenever I get my car washed at the spot across the street. The food is usually good. Great ribs, solid wings, and decent sides. The problem is the service. I always sit at the bar, and there is typically no one servicing the bar. Someone usually comes over eventually, pours me a drink and takes my order. Eventually. Now mind you, this is not one of those BBQ joints where the bar is simply an afterthought area staged for to-go orders (Jim N Nick's). This is a FULL FLEDGED BAR that happens to be missing a bartender most of the time. I usually go during the day, so this is a forgivable sin in my book. But today I went at 6pm (considered the beginning of Happy Hour in most of the civilized world). NO BARTENDER. Granted, they were slammed with like 20 adolescent customers from who knows where, but seriously??? No bartender at 6pm??? I sat down and waited 10 minutes (I timed it) to at least get the "Hey sir, we are crazy busy right now, give me a few minutes, do you need a drink to get started" convo. But nothing. Either put up a sign saying the bar is CLOSED, or staff your bar with a bartender in the evening! Guy walks in and sits next to me, looking around for a bartender. I gave him a "good luck" look and got up to eat at the car wash. Yep, the Auto Spa Bistro has better service than Moe's bar. I had to sit through Southern contemporary drawl-laden hip-hop on volume 11 and an actively disengaged bartender, but at least I got a drink, right? Ugh.

On the walk from the hotel to Shaky Knees, we stopped by Moe's everyday for 4 consecutive days. Along with our before noon beers, we tried most items on the menu. The wings were delicious, and I would put the pulled pork up against any that I have ever had. The cornbread is also memorable. We were treated really well by the bartenders and waitstaff.

I think some of the best BBQ in Georgia. Good meats (including smoked wings, which are hard to find), delicious Bama style sandwiches, and always great sides. The banana pudding is some of the best I've ever had. People are super nice, too. All around great place.

Can't give you a five yet. Haven't tried the food. However, I heard they had the best banana pudding in all the land. And I like banana pudding. So I stopped by. Only to read a sign on the door that said that they were closed for the day for a private event. Not heeding the sign, I cracked the door open like an obnoxious a**hole. The kind sweaty man (owner/manager? Not quite sure) reaffirmed the notice on the door. I still pursued the quest to get Atlanta's best banana pudding and asked if they had one to go. They didn't. Panic began to set in. The kind sweaty man walked over to a table where a couple of cooks were portioning out single servings of the prize for the event, grabbed one and gave it to me at no charge. Thank you again, kind sweaty man!! That's some serious customer service. Sadly, you don't often see it in Atlanta. Way to go!! By the way, that is some damn good freaking banana pudding!!

Hit Moe's before the Tech v. Miami game last Saturday and was really impressed. Good atmosphere and the staff was on top of it. The lady behind the bar seems to run the show. She was quick on the drink orders, and took our dinner order from a party of 5 without jotting a single note. Pretty damn impressive. Got a couple orders of wings with white BBQ sauce. They were tasty and good sized. Service was quick even as the place filled up. Main course was the pork sandwich with Mac and cheese and potato salad. Pork and Mac were great. Potato salad was dry and not so good. Will definitely be back!

Here is a short and sweet review..... Decent BBQ. You know it's home cooked but still has a manufactured taste to it. Worth eating but not worth drooling over. The service is pretty good. But in Georgia, in the summer, I will be damned if I have to be tortured by lack of a cooling central air system. I wait, it cooled down after two hours. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and it was huge with a side of mac n cheese. Both were worth me coming back! The service from bartenders and wait staff was attentive. So I'm not sure what all the complains are about..... I liked it minus the lack of A/C.

Went by for the first time after class today and got a togo order of the pulled pork platter with collards and pork chilli. The staff was really friendly and informed us that they smoke their meats twice daily, once for lunch and once for dinner. The pork was delicious, tender and juicy with their BBQ sauce, which was sweet and tangy. The collards were average, little salty. The chili was soooo salty to the point I had to drain the liquid to eat it. What made the meal for me was the corn bread. Yummmm!! I'd come back for the pork platter, but would try different sides next time. I gave this four stars because of the salty chilli. If I have a craving for ribs I would prefer Fat Matts and if I have a craving for any other BBQ I would eat at Fox Bros; but for something near where I live, I'll take it!

I got the wings plate with corn bread, Mac and cheese and banana pudding. Everything tasted Great!! I will definitely come back..the wings were crispy and had just the right amount of sauce.

Ordered 1/2 chicken with collards, chicken gumbo, and Lima beans. He chicken and Lima beans were ok. The gumbo and greens were super salty. Later on I got sick. Perhaps the salt was used to cover up old rotten food.

I walked to this restaurant since I was going to have business in Atlanta the next day. I'm a huge barbecue fan and I've only had a few chances to have it in the south. Moe's did not disappoint. I had the large rib platter and then I got the "Moe" add on which got me four wings. The baked beans were frankly some of the best I've had. I saw some of the other Yelp reviews and their comments, but honestly, the beans were really REALLY good. I also had mac and cheese and that was pretty good, but not spectacular. The wings were also very good. Sweet but a bit spicy, but certainly not too much. The ribs were good too, but maybe just a touch bland. They were very tender, but kind of small too. I would definitely go back. The guys that took my order and gave me my food were very friendly. The lady that was working behind the bar was also very nice.

My first time trying Alabama style BBQ. Had the pulled pork sandwich. The sauce is mayo based. If you like slaw on your sandwich, you should like this. Still, the sandwich was a little soggier than I prefer, causing the bun to fall apart a bit. Kind of a cool vibe inside. I'd stop in again if I was in the neighborhood.

    (3)
  • Christopher L.

I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, mac and cheese, and coleslaw. Pulled pork was the only thing of redeeming quality. Mac was sloppy, greasy, and the noodles were not completely baked. The coleslaw didn't wow me. And, the BBQ sauce lacked spice, IMHO. On top of that, the head chef kept loudly repeating to his fellow servers and kitchen staff that they were closing early at 730. It was 7 o'clock. I get closing up shop on a slow night, but he took it to an extremely obnoxious point. The place can't be more than 1,000 square feet with 5 employees. There were 4 total patrons that were all just eating dinner. The chef kept going up to every worker loudly announcing, "we are going to close early at 730 today". Ridiculous. I won't be returning.

I was not craving barbecue when Moe's was suggested (and so wasn't thrilled by the suggestion) but since a friend had been and thought it was decent, I figured it couldn't be all that bad. No being in the mood for pork, I opted for the fried catfish sandwich with baked beans and collards (not a regular menu item, interestingly enough). For $3 more, I got 4 wings. J got the pulled pork sandwich with mac and cheese, collards, and 2 ribs for $3. (You can also get 3 oz of smoked meat for $3 extra, or an additional side for $1). You order at the counter, serve yourself for the drinks, and then grab a seat. Food was out within 5 minutes. All of it was good enough that I'd come back if in the area, but nothing that makes me think I'll ever crave this place. The catfish sandwich was tasty - the salt from the battered, fried fish, the vinegar from the marinated slaw on top, the tang of the pickles. The collards were good - subtly smokey, not too limp. The baked beans were slightly sweet and slightly spicy, a little too much sauce for my taste. The wings were just ok. The were a little dry, a little spicy, a little crispy, and not enough of any of those to be memorable. I got a taste of J's mac and cheese, and it was very greasy and salty. The rib was good, but again, not smokey enough or tender enough to be memorable. I'm glad to see another good and casual restaurant in the neighborhood, and I see myself spending plenty of time here during next baseball season. I do want to try the smoked turkey, since that's how I prefer mine at Thanksgiving. I was also impressed that they had some healthy alternatives such as smoked tofu, and a fig and spinach salad (maybe from the fig tree in the back?). There's also a decent sized back deck, which I'll happily try when pleasant temperatures return. There's a handful of parking spots in the back lot (down State St) and on State St, but I wouldn't park at Jimmy John's or the Auto Spa Bistro across the street. #Yelp365 - 204/365

Whoa! Sandwich, 2 sides, & a drink for $9!! Where do I sign up?!?! Went there for lunch today.....SCOUT MOB!! I had a pulled pork, green beans & skillet corn! I don't have a complaint about any of it! Sandwich had good amount of meat in it, green beans had bacon pieces in it (how can you go wrong with bacon?), and the skillet corn was YUMMMM!! Service was fast! I was hanging my purse on the hook underneath the bar, looked up, and there was a guy with my food! A squirt bottle of BBQ sauce within arms reach, and I was ready to chow down!!! Crowded for lunch, but service was quick, as it should be for lunch! I will be back again for lunch!

Mmm-Hmm! Hallelujah! Slap yo' momma type BBQ! Yes ma'am! This place hits the spot! (That is, if you're like me & you always wish for your entire portion of food to come out spicy as all get out!!!) We ordered the (separate) sliced turkey & pulled pork platters, with mac & cheese, collard greens and baked beans. The wife says her turkey was juicy and tasty, but the sauce has a bit-of-a-kick, or in her own words, "kicky..." The plates at Moe's are well crafted and LUNCHTIME generous, from the regular everyday sides such as mac & cheese and baked beans, to the daily selections like lima beans or collard greens. If you have an appetite and hope for extra meat, better pile on the extras my Yelp-friend! The outside facade is a new brick exterior, with a patio out back. The interior decor? Think comfy BBQ pit, with a bar in the back of the restaurant that leads to that patio out back. The only reason for 4 stars, instead of 5: My wife wanted her meal to be as mild as possible, and was told by the employee that the greens wouldn't be spicy. When she couldn't manage to get through her first bite, I offered to trade my baked beans with her, but she declined as they were apparently just as hot... Note: There is a sign posted inside that warns patrons not to park at the lot across the street or you will be towed. There is available parking in a lot behind the restaurant and ample parking along State Street.

The food was great! Better than most of the BBQ spots advertised on PBS. The only thing lacking was the Mac n cheese. Not enough flavor or cheese....! I still give it a 5 because the BBQ was amazing!!!

Came here with a big group for lunch on Sunday. Being a vegetarian, I assumed I'd be stuck to ordering a few sides a la cart at a BBQ joint, so I was pleasantly surprised (shocked, really) to see a smoked tofu sandwich on the menu. Every sandwich basket comes with two sides-so I ordered marinated slaw (a nice tangy alternative to the mayo kind) and potato salad. The slaw was great, and the potato salad was flavorful but a little dry. The rest of our group ordered a variety of pulled pork and rib baskets and everyone seemed pretty happy with their meal. The staff is pretty friendly and the food comes out pretty quickly after you place your order at the counter. This place is on Scoutmob, and combined with the $5 discount from Am Ex, my husband and I ate lunch for 10 bucks. Not bad at all.

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with stuffing my face with average BBQ, all the while saying "mmmmm" with my face all full of pork and stuff, as if it's the best thing ever. It isn't. But it's satisfying, the sides are delicious especially the potato salad and the corn, the sauce is tangy and right up my alley. I highly recommend the pulled pork with tons of sauce dumped on it and shoved into my mouth with the buns (yes, if you'll take note I said MY mouth), even better if at the same time potato salad and corn get all mixed up in there too. If you're a bona fide face stuffer who loves tangy sauce like myself, I highly recommend this place to you. Service was awesome.

You know... I was really worried about this place due to a few bad reviews. It's also in the same building as my work and we order take out from here ALLLLLLLL the time. If you know me, you'll know that I love me some barbecue and I'm kind of a barbecue snob. So of course I was worried when I got my first meal at Moe's. I've ordered their wing platter at least three times now and it's been consistently good. All of our coworkers rotate between ordering the ribs (wet ribs not dry rub) and the wings. Their vegetables are consistently done well and they got some good beer specials here and there. Is it the best barbecue place? No. It's a good local joint to grab a beer and some wings to watch the game or to just kick back. The guys are friendly and they'll tell you what's fresh and good as of the time you order if you ask them. The sides are great and I highly recommend the skillet corn.

I'm surprised I haven't yet written a review of this place. Ate lunch here yesterday for my 4th(?) time. Had the pulled pork sandwich. It was good but I can't say it's the best I've ever had. It would be sooo tasty if you could get it on texas toast (hint, hint)! One of my sides was the squash casserole (good) & the other was the mac-n-cheese (just so-so). My friend did tell me that usually the MnC is better. For some reason there wasn't much cheese at all on it. On 2 other visits, I've really enjoyed their Shrimp Moe-Boy. Sooo tasty to me. Nicely fried shrimp, a yummy cole slaw & pickles (I think that's all that's on it). I actually had to make myself order the pork yesterday in lieu of this goodness. I've also had the sweet potato casserole (they didn't have it yesterday - boo). My friend said that was the main reason she wanted to go! We both think it should be added to the list of always-available sides. :-) I've also tried the skillet corn. It was good, but nothing I'd make a special trip for. Can't recall right now what other sides I've had. Based on other reviews, I really want to try their cornbread next time & I hope I hit them on a day when they have fried okra or plantains. Yum to both! It's also cool that you can choose banana pudding as one of your sides. We've always felt that the staff is very nice. The food always comes out super-fast which is great when you're on your lunch hour. And I don't feel like I break the bank when I come here. We'll return lots of times!! :-0

To be clear DBA BBQ at Amsterdam and North Highland is my current favorite BBQ in Atlanta. Moe's is a bit of a different animal. You order at the counter here and then they bring you your food. Clean environ and open seating area. Prices are par for the course for quality BBQ. I am a serious fan of pulled pork and have to force myself to choose anything else. But this time I elected to get the ribs (pops was buying so why not). I got a small order and chose the fried green tomatoes and Brunswick Stew as my sides. The sweet tea was standard, nothing special. The Brunswick Stew was more of the soupy variety but had a sweet taste to it which was quite nice. It was well seasoned and paired with a delicious piece of cornbread. About three spoons into my stew they brought me an extra rib! The small usually comes with 4 but apparently they had an extra or an odd one out so they just gave it to me. This kind of service appeals to me on many levels (perhaps they saw me snapping photos and new what I was up to). No waste and the service was great! Fried Green Tomatoes were quite good and fried just right. Ribs very good and cooked neatly. This is a well oiled machine of a BBQ joint. I will definitely be enjoying Moes again soon!

If each review were required to have a title, I would call this one "The Good, The Bad....But Not The Ugly",LOL. Overall, this is a good BBQ joint but there were a couple things that I didn't particularly care for...things the average person probably wouldn't care anything about.... The ribs themselves (they were spare ribs) were excellent and looked like they could have been presented for turn in at a competition right then and there. However, these ribs had been trimmed down so much that although they were spare ribs, they were about the size of baby backs and I didn't care for that too much. The quality of the meat itself though was very good. My only other complaint was the price, I didn't think the portions fit what they charged although this place is in the heart of the city and you are going to over pay for everything in the city. I hope this review doesnt sound too negative, this is a nice place and I dang sure didn't leave any food behind although people that are REALLY into bbq may have a couple of issues.

The smoked wings are great, but otherwise this place is generally unremarkable. Other than the giant fig tree out back. Pick 'em before the squirrels and birds get them all.

I'd kind of lost hope for this 14th Street corridor when it came to dining, with the departures of Kool Korner and Bobby & June's, and its seemingly unsuccessful replacements as well as the growth of Atlantic Station and the West End districts. But Moe's Original Barbecue has given me both hope and reason to start coming by this area to eat, and not just to use the network of surface streets to traverse bad traffic or cut to Atlantic Station. Occupying the area where Kool Korner used to be at the corner of 14th and State Street, it's a surprisingly convenient location, despite the fact that at the wrong time of day, even an eighth of a mile in either direction could have you trapped in the brick fortress of Atlanta traffic. They have a very tiny parking lot of free parking that could hold maybe like eight cars or so, but it's also possible to park along the curb on State St. I've managed to only go during fairly off-peak times, so I haven't been able to see what it's like at its worst in terms of customer density, but that's typically how I roll anyway, avoiding crowds. The interior of Moe's Original is cozy and spacious. I'm not trying to sound all HGTV and convoluted here, but I like that the place has high ceilings, and with justification, not just purely aesthetics; lots of BBQ joints sometimes get that thick sticky air feeling from endless hours of smoking meats and such, which isn't the worst smell/feeling in the world, but it's really not that helpful when you're drunk. Well the high ceilings help negate that stuffiness in the building. Anyway, they have generous seating at the bar, and nice large wooden booths that could easily seat six, but also maybe eight smaller folks, as well as ordinary tables. The food though, is what keeps me coming back, and will entrench Moe's Original into my rotation of options whenever I have to ask "what should we have for dinner?" Ironically, the pulled pork has been my least favorite meat option on their menu that I've tried, and it's not to say that it's by any means bad, it's just that I'm that much more favoring some of the other meats. Now I know chicken wings aren't necessarily what people think of when they think barbecue, but I just want to put out that Moe's Original's chicken wings are probably my favorite wings in Atlanta right now. I'm not entirely sure what they do to them, I'm guessing they're partially smoked, as well as fried, but the combination of whatever it is they do to them, along with the subtle glazing of whatever sauce they put on them has won this customer over and coming back for more. They're really flavorful, retain some juice, but at the same time, have that little bit of chew that really separates it from any chain where wings are available. The pulled pork and the catfish are also both good, and I'd never balk if someone were to bring me those meats out of the blue, but the wings have become reason to go to Moe's Original for me as of now. It's because of them I haven't actually heaven forbid tried their ribs yet, because I can't stop craving the chicken. It's like that episode of Seinfeld where Kenny Rogers Chicken was like crack to Jerry and Kramer. The rotating door of sides is also a good feature at Moe's Original, because it's pretty much the only thing preventing me from having the same verbatim chicken wings meal whenever I go. The best part about their sides is that from what I've tried so far, they all either add meat and/or don't shy away from spice. There's little more pleasing than finding a slice of sausage in your collared greens or red beans and rice, and the tangy spiciness of the okra in their black eyed peas was unexpectedly good. But anyway, back to some useful intel, the value of dining at Moe's Original is also a plus in my book. A meat platter, which includes two sides, and a generous brick of hearty (slightly sweet) cornbread and a big cup of refillable fountain drink runs like $11-13 depending on which meat you get. To me, that's a solid meal that isn't unreasonable, although I'd imagine there are those who would disagree. All I know is that out of my repeated trips over the last months, I've never once left Moe's Original Barbecue unsatisfied.

I had been craving BBQ for quite a while, and so my wife decided to surprise me with a treat from Moe's. Neither of us had the Moe's experience. After she'd met a co-worker for lunch there, she decided to bring me a pulled pork sandwich (sauce on the side), a side of potato salad and baked beans. The first thing is they are EXPENSIVE for a simple BBQ lunch!!! The meat was tender, but far from seasoned. The bbq sauce was overly spicy and the beans...how much more pepper did you need to add? We won't return :-/

I was going to save this one for my Yelp 365 entries, but all of the fake one-star reviews are about to send me over the edge. So, here's what... Can someone tell me where the parking lot is located? I sure couldn't find it and I ended up parking on State Street. There aren't any meters or signs, so I quickly ran in for fear of a ticket. The pulled pork tasted like sweaty balls. I can't figure out why. I tried the sauce. Fine. The plain meat. Fine. Maybe it was some pickle juice? Or maybe the combination has some sort of chemical reaction that isn't conducive to my palette? I'm not sure. Fortunately, the wings were AWESOME. Smoked to perfection. The beans and greens (two different dishes) were really good too. It took a long time to get my to-go order, but they just opened and hopefully things will get more quickly with time. I mean, it wasn't outrageous and everything was still hot when I got home. In the end I guess that's what matters. Maybe they'll be able to work through some of the kinks as the staff gets trained. Oh, and tell the bartender that it's not good to stand with your back facing the bar to eat while customers are in front of you. Five minutes seems like twenty minutes to everyone else watching. Trust me.

First time in Moes for a while but Tammy the bartender was spectacular! I will be back more often now. Its nice to have a bartender in the area that has a personality and enjoys making the guests have a good time. If you're looking for great food and cheap drink prices you HAVE to come see Tammy at Moes.

Pork ribs are very tender, but not fall-off-the-bone tender. Good quality meat here. The smoke isn't as strong as some other BBQ joints though. The sauce has a little kick, but not too much. The cornbread is buttered and toasted on the griddle. The collards are pretty good and have a little pork fat in the mix. The red beans and rice are pretty spicy. A nice alternative to baked beans.

My husband and I had heard great things about this place through some friends, so this past week we decided to check it out. The location is pretty close to tech so I can definitely see it getting busy and being a great place to go to during football season. When you walk in the place looks much more spacious than expected. Beautiful wood finishing and a huge bar :) very clean and has a lot of character! I opted for the pulled pork sandwich and my husband ordered the ribs. Both came with two sides and a drink for under 10$/each. The food came out within 5 minutes and I ate every last bite. I'm a big fan of pulled pork and this one hit the spot for me. The BBQ sauce was tangy and not overly heavy, I felt full and satisfied after our meal. We also tried on of their specialty drinks, the Bushwhaker. It's like a frosty but for big kids.... Watch out- because those will catch up with you fast! Overall we really enjoyed our food, the prices, and the quick service! I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a new BBQ restaurant. We will definitely be back for the drinks, atmosphere and the BBQ!

I went there for the first time and ordered the fried chicken, with beans and mac n cheese. They were out of what I originally was going to order so that's why I had to settle for the only chicken option they had. I could not swallow any of the food because it was too salty for my taste. The fried chicken felt like I just bit into a chunk of salty animal fat but I guess that's how most people like their food? I will not despise my friends or coworkers from going there but all i can say is this place is not for me, I am not a fan of super salty and greasy food. The only good thing about this place is that it is close to work. Maybe their other food might be good, I usually will try anything at least twice but I'll pass on going to Moe's again.

Came here on a Sunday evening with some friends and it was a pretty dead atmosphere. I really wanted to like it because it's got a nice independent vibe but was left disappointed. I got a pulled pork sandwich with sides of mac and cheese. The sides were pretty small and there wasn't much flavor to the sandwich. On the positive side, the memorabilia and stuff on the walls is pretty cool and the bar looked ok for a few beers.

Moe's is pretty good BBQ. I come from North Georgia so we like our barbeque a little bit different than the way Moe's does it. I see some mediocre reviews but I don't know of too many truly great BBQ joints around metro Atlanta. Moe's is definitely worth a try. The portions are a little smaller than I'm used to but maybe portions at restaurants are generally a little bigger than they should be.

Pretty good bbq. Meat quality seems lacking sometimes. Better choices out there, but still good.

Not good, not good. My sandwich was so dry and tasteless. The slaw is a vinegar based slaw that they did kindly let me trade for mac and cheese, but the mac and cheese was so dry and gross that I wish I'd kept the slaw! And the service was not friendly. The guy who took our order and brought us the food clearly did not want to be there at all. Very disappointed.

I too am writing this because it needs to be done. I wanted to give this place a second chance before yelping. It is absurd that this place has so many 5 star reviews, but I am pretty sure that they are all a little fake. Sorry guys, yelp can be your friend, but artificially hyping your restaurant by writing reviews is annoying. This is pretty sub-par bbq, especially with all of the locally owned joints in Atlanta. BBQ places should smell amazing when you walk up to them. Where are my delicious smells? All I can smell is homepark, and homepark smells like piss. For what you get, this place is pretty expensive. The smoked turkey tastes like something out of a publix deli counter, 1/2 chicken is better, but not great. Sides are all throw away. How can you claim to be a southern revival and not sell fried sides? I am really rather offended by this fact. The best part was the corn bread: I liked it. The staff did seem friendly enough. They also were quite excited about their new restaurant. There are enough TVs in here that it could make for a nice place to sit and watch a game and have a beer.

So here is the scoop. I'm from Birmingham where they originally opened up (I think they opened up their Vail location at the same time): There are some things to know: 1. There sandwiches and everything outside of BBQ is really good. I know it's a bbq joint, but really the chicken, po boy, and wings are really there strong points. 2. I would say their pulled pork is okay. Pulled pork is best on a sandwich and ask for it bama style. You won't be disappointed. 3. Sides are tiny. I see where they have upped it to a 6 oz serving. There sides are generally good. 4. Ask for the white sauce or their mix and try it on your stuff. It's really good. 5. Good cornbread. Can't go wrong with it. I wish they would bring kitchen sink nachos to this establishment. It's the best thing you can get in the whole restaurant. Why they haven't put these in every Moe's is beyond me. Would sell like hotcakes. Seriously leaving money on the table by not.

I went here with a friend of mine from work... which is right across the street, so we're a little biased. I got the pork sandwich, and the 2 sides: baked beans & collard greens. The pork sandwich was good. Nice amount of meat, decent sized bun, and a pickle. Good sauce on the meat, and I added a bit more of theirs which has a great amount of flavor & spice. The standout were the greens... nicely cooked greens with a good amount of tang. Really good. The baked beans were also good. The portions were just right... I didn't walk away feeling stuffed, or robbed either. We will be back for sure.

Disappointing BBQ. Plus the staff was sick and gave me their cold. Sneezed on my ribs. Terrible. Then I was surrounded by under age kids because it was dollar beer night. Le sigh.

Stopped in Moe's for an early lunch today at 11:15 and was underwhelmed. Staff was [MIKE] nice but the pork was room temperature, corn bread was cold and then heated on a grill (so cold inside) and the hot plate with the [JOE]sides on it was so hot that I burned my tongue on the sweet potatoes.. (and no fried Okra?) All that aside, the [HEATHER] pulled pork didn't have much flavor and the sides were small for a $10.50 plate. They also had only 1 kind of sauce, which I liked, but other people did not so [BOB] they just had to eat plain meet. The had no butter pats for the cornbread and the kitchen got confused when I [JIM] asked for some. It was also really [ANDY] annoying that the kitchen YELLED out your name when when your order was ready [JAKE] and you had to go pick it up. In our case we were 3 steps from the kitchen [ALAN] and the guys still put it all on the table and made[PAUL] us walk even after we acknowledged his name yell. I would put this place [LORI] on par with Shane's rib shack, another franchised BBQ place with no soul. But at [JEREMY] least at Shane's you get a big plate [TERI] of food. Do yourself a favor and skip Moe's and drive to Daddy D's, Fat Matt's or Slope's for some really good BBQ. P.S. for some [ROBERT] reason this place has a lot of 5 star reviews, including ones that [CHARLIE] are obviously fake (see "Julie M." talking about how great the patios is, but on the day I was there, 20 days after her review, they were still building it). [THE NAME YELLING BY THE STAFF SCREAMS "THIS PLACE IS FOR TECH KIDS" BUT THE PRICES & QUALITY CONTROL whisper "we don't want you to come back"]

    (1)
  • Lori F.

Was excited to try the new kid in the Tech neighborhood, but it definitely wasn't as I expected. The interior is nice - much nicer than I would have guessed from the outside. Huge bar, though it was totally empty. Ordered a pulled pork plate and a drink, but only to find out that the soda machine was out so the only drinks I could choose were iced tea or lemonade. Would have been nice if they mentioned that when I handed over my money. The first thing I noticed was portion size. My platter (meat and 2 sides and tiny piece of cornbread) was tiny. For $10, I would have expected more around these parts at least. My pulled pork was pretty bland. The most offensive thing was the tiny, 2 oz. dressing cup that my mac n cheese came in. Dry, salty (???) mac n cheese. Just sad. Disappointing.

Here is the no fuss review. I can only speak to the quality of the BBQ pulled pork sandwich and I think it is the best I have had in the city. Heirlooms for the brisket, MOEs for the pulled pork sandwich. Perfectly done, juicy pulled pork and the sauce has the exact small amount of kick to it. I really love the one pickle slice that isn't too over powering. Most joints are trying to throw cole slaw on top to hide the bad meat. Moe's was a heavenly sandwich. Mac n Cheese + baked beans were my sides. Both we good not great, but I have never reviewed a BBQ just for the sides. Might as well skip them and order 2 sandwiches!! Truly my only complaint is it doesn't look like a dive BBQ. I think the very new and very nice interior takes away from the atmosphere. The MOEs in Vail has twice the character.

  • Jay H.

A 1.4 star is more in-line with the rating. Reasons? * Small portions... some were the size of child orders, their prices are way to high * BBQ was room temp. and bland * Parking, none * Bartender/waiter, she was the only reason for the 2 star

The Theatre I perform at (Relapse Theatre) is located across the street from Moe's Original Bar B Que and I think it's a great addition to the neighborhood. You have to take it for what it is, and appreciate how it goes above & beyond. While it's a "chain bar b que joint," it has a lot of personalized stamps, including artwork created by one of the owners. Moe's also has a sweet bar, and huge flat screens. I think their success will lie in these extras... While the food is excellent & they have up'd their portion sizes. Moe's is the perfect place to watch a game or play trivia, while drinking affordably. Their drink specials are aweeesoooome. I highly suggest you grab some bar-b-que & drinks @ Moe's one night, then head over to Relapse for a show!

Near Georgia Tech, this is another of those places that couldn't quite decide whether it wanted to be a bar, sports bar or barbecue restaurant, so opted to try and be all three. You order at a counter and the Brown Shoe Gourmet became more than a little concerned when I noticed the Day's special includes smoked tofu, chicken wings and fried fish. Items not found on the menu at any self respecting barbecue joint. Pulled pork is good, not great; beans like at most other places. Insofar as barbecue is concerned, fair to middlin' at best.

Going to give this place 3.5 stars if I could. I am friends with some people that know the owners. When we walked in today for lunch, we were greeted by Preston, one of the owners. He was proudly standing behind the counter and we talked briefly about the place and the paintings throughout the restaurant (he did them all). I thought the building was really nice. Everything was brand new and looked great. The bar was very big and there were TVs throughout the dining area. It looked like a great place to enjoy a game with family or friends. For our meal, we ordered some ribs, some pulled pork and picked four different sides, which in my opinion stood out above the meat. My wife had the baked beans and collards. She raved about both. I ordered the skillet corn and the broccoli casserole. Both of mine were very tasty. I do agree with other Yelpers that the portions were very small. However, for $9 (sandwich with two sides and a drink), the value is very good. It was overall a good amount of food but I think with a little tweaking they could increase the sides a wee bit to help. For the meat, we had pork ribs and pulled pork. I will just say that the ribs were very tasty and smoked through. They did not blow me away but they were very solid and they were large bones with a lot of meat. I thought the pulled pork was a bit WET if that makes sense. I prefer my pork a bit less soaked in sauce and also with a bit more bark. However, the amount of pork was very satisfying and the taste was above average. Moe's made me feel comfortable while we were there with friendly help, good atmosphere and quality food. I am not putting the bbq at the top of my Atlanta list but I will return for a consistent well priced meal many times to come. Congrats Preston and company on the new place!

We have been to Moes BBQ twice within the week and they have run out of ribs, wings and a majority of their meat before 7pm each time. Great if you like catfish, not so great if you like BBQ. It might be tolerable if the staff did not have a "sucks for you" attitude.

Wings are really good. sides are OK. The ribs taste good but are served at room temp. I know you cant cook BBQ to order, it takes hours to smoke it but Ive never had ribs served at room temp before. at least douse it with hot BBQ sauce to create an illusion. Fox bros, Pcheen, and any other big name in the city the ribs come out warm. I will be back for the wings but not the ribs.

pulled swine + slaw + cornbread = "it's not heirloom..." like i've said before, people are picky about their bbq. this place didn't do it for me. the pulled pork was moist but it lacked flavor. I couldn't taste the hickory smoke that normally permeates bbq. the sides were small and lackluster its a brand new place and they're still working out their kinks. ie. should i leave the plates on the table? will you bring out my food or just holler and point to the food... indicating its time for me to get my ass up and get my grub? will you handle money with your gloves on and then proceed to prepare food without switching gloves? I'm not bringing your mom here....

When you put the word 'original' in your title, especially where it concerns BBQ, you better be sure that you can meet...nay...supercede expectations. While Moe's Original BBQ is admittedly still but a wee babe in the Atlanta BBQ scene it is clear to me that they are not to be taken lightly. Both the wings and the turkey sliders offered up original and tastily balanced, fresh flavors; and with a 14th Street view of the city that begs to be rivaled and an atmosphere that boasts casual comfort and local artistry (even down to the restrooms!), how can you NOT want to come back for more?! And let's be honest, isn't that what BBQ is all about??? Can't wait to get back to exhaust this local treasure's menu...and plan to do it before it gets flooded by the Scoutmobers and Grouponites! Yummy, yum, YUM!

I can say that this is the worst BBQ I have ever tasted. I was not happy at all with the food at this place. The only thing good was the piece of pickle that came with the food. I do not know if I would be willing to give this place a second chance but as of right now I will not be returning.

I have to admit, I was skeptical walking into Moe's because I'm still sad that it's no longer a Kool Korners... however, once I was done with a very tasty lunch my mind had been changed and I'm excited that Moe's has taken over this space. My husband and I split one of the platters and I was really pleased with everything. The pulled pork tasted authentic- nice flavor without being too smokey, the barbecue sauce enhanced the meat flavor but didn't overpower; the green beans were probably the tastiest I've ever had (cooked with lots of bacon, but not so overcooked that they turned to mush in your mouth.) The slaw was great- light and vinegar-based, an awesome change-up from the usual very mayonnaise-heavy versions I'm used to. The place is really cute and clean and the staff were very friendly. They had a giant smoker where they cook all their meat on the premises- looked pretty authentic to me. There were a number of other things on the menu that sounded super tasty and I would've gotten if I'd been hungrier (pork nachoes w/ homemade chips? sign me up) but will save those for another trip. Given the number of chains that are spreading around midtown, it's great to see a place open up that has personality and good food. Sure, parking can be a challenge if you're not familiar with the area, but that can add to the fun and serve as a good reminder that this isn't just another chain that's crept in from OTP. Looking forward to my next visit to Moe's.

Good Service, Pleasant atmosphere, but I'm here to talk about the sauce. I'm not a fan of the sweet and sour BBQ sauce and coupled with the pulled pork, it tasted spoiled. I do think the pulled pork was excellently done. Smoke flavor was perfect. I will order the meat again but not the sauce. They were out of Brunswick Stew which was disappointing. But I wish them all the best. This area needs restaurants like this one.

I've been to Moe's Original BBQ a couple of times during the intermission period of Relapse Theatre's Friday night lineup, which is spec-freakin'-tacular improv comedy by the way. I'm somewhat uncertain of what to think of Moe's Original BBQ because of the service inconsistency. At times, your name is called, and you go retrieve your order. At other times, your food is brought to you. At times, you get up to leave and throw away your trash. At other times, a young lady walks over and picks up your eating tray. Also, I find it unusual that a BBQ restaurant doesn't have French fries? On the bright side, the preparation time between when you place your order and when your food is ready is remarkably quick. As other reviewers have mentioned, the portion sizes of their sides will leave you wanting more, especially if you get the banana pudding. HOLY CRAP, THEIR BANANA PUDDING IS GOOD!! But then again, when looking for a BBQ place, you probably want to find one that has customers raving about the BBQ rather than the banana pudding.

Delish! Vinager-based sauce and the cornbread is amazing.

I don't know what the other reviews are talking about. I went to Moe's today and I had fabulous food, fabulous service, and plenty of food on my plate. Maybe they had some kinks to work out in the beginning but clearly they have done so. I will definitely go back. I loved it!

Awesome new BBQ spot! Food is great, people are friendly, and transformation of the old Kool Korners store is amazing. 'The old man' would be proud.

I have eaten here 3 times and had great experiences on each visit. The interior is clean, has nice decorations, and has a new woody smell to it. The food has been solid everytime. The pulled pork is tender, tasty, and not full of fat or grease like some other bbq places around. The wings cooked to perfection and tasty. I love the fried okra, but unfortunately they don't have it everyday. For only $10 you get 7oz. of meat, 2 sides, cornbread, and a fountain drink. Moe's is a great value and worth checking out.
