It is what everyone says it is, read the 100 other reviews and you'll get pretty much the same breakdown. It's solid Cuban Food that's been around since a really long fucking time. The Steak with the Mountain of French fries is the safest way to go. I suggest you share this with someone in order to avoid the overwhelming feeling of dying you'll get if u house it solo. Side note: their pre meal bread is a cut above the standard Cuban bread and butter/oil. I think they do some sort of garlic oil thing that makes it taste delicious. Stock up on bread.

Largest palomino steak in Westchester for sure!! Let's talk 'bout them fries! Real homemade, peeled and deep fried fries! Awesomeness!! The place could use some updating; the interior makes you feek like your in a late 70's, early 80's time warp, but at least they have plenty of parking!! The other downfall to this place is that you leave smelling like you've been cooking or eating cuban food for hours!

Wish the staff was more attentive but if you're looking for legit Cuban food, this is the spot you wanna go to. Fried fish chunks, white rice with black beans and FRIES = heaven!!!! Affordable and big servings too. Enjoy!

Its very fortunate that i gave this restaurant a 1star rating. Ive been going here for 30 years and never had a problem...until today. I normally sit on the left side with the waitresses, not the waiters. Today i came with my family of 5 and sat on the RIGHT side. BIG MISTAKE. The table was dirty and we refused to sit. We asked this man who is about 123 years old to clean to the table. He said IT WAS clean. I asked him again to clean it and he used his hands to swipe off some crumbs. Note : the table was still dirty. Finally he came with a rag and cleaned the table. Then he gave us dirty glasses with food and lipstick stains. And the jug of water he placed on the table had a french fry in it. We returned the water jug and glasses. He came back with a new jug of water and paper cups. I guess he thought we were an upscale family. Since he's a ninja and disappears so we tried to keep him at out our table to order our food and he walked away. We tried to get his attention as far as to yell to bring him back. He came back with an attitude. When he started with his attitude, thats when i grabbed my family and we decided to go to La Carreta down the street. I later find out that this rude waiter is also THE OWNER. As we were walking out he said in spanish "The best thing for you to do is walk out." Never coming back here again. Try and report me again. This one is sticking.

Delicious lechon asado, black beans, maduros at a good/fair price. Waitresses were older ladies Cuban ladies that made the whole experience sort of comical. First time and I plan on going back soon.

Best cuban food in Miami? People need to get out more. The place is really a huge dump and I am all for "hole in the wall" locations but this place is ugly, out dated, poorly decorated and it smelled bad. To top off the bad smell they were burning a rose candle. Ah, yes, the smell of roses, funk and grease is a perfect mix to smell in the air. The food was ok. We had the steak and fries with a side of white rice. The chicken soup tasted like Campbell's and had only dark meat in it. I had a piece of tortilla and it was literally just like the crappy one I make at home. You know that image of a Spanish omelette you have in your mind, well that's not what you get. Prices were ok but not so cheap for an ugly place and whatever food. The host was not welcoming at all. She couldn't be bothered with questions because she answered in a sarcastically sweet way. Our waitress was very good. I'm sorry I didn't catch her name. If you're a tourist this is NOT the best food in Miami or Westchester for that matter. If you are not a tourist I would go somewhere else. Two stars because the steak and fries were ok and our service didn't completely suck.

Good Cuban food. Good enough. I've tried a few of the items on the menu - ropa vieja, lechon sandwich, palomilla steak - and they've all been really good. They serve pretty generous portions; I've always been split my meal with someone else. The fries are one of my favorite parts of having a meal at Rio Cristal. The flan is pretty popular so I tried it one time and it was pretty good - it was really, really sweet, a little too sweet, but the texture was just perfect. The servers I've had have always been very nice. I'm knocking off one star for the following: - In my opinion, it's overpriced; however, I mentioned that the meals are often big enough to split, so it somewhat does justice to the prices. - A little dirty and dingy and sometimes smelly.

The steak rio crystal with the French fries is the only reason why I come here. I've honestly never had anything else on the menu. My boyfriend and I always share #51. Yes, it's big enough to share! I don't think anyone can finish that whole thing by themselves (I would love to see who can!). It's usually pretty empty, which makes service very quick. It's simple, and fast Cuban food. You must try the steak at least once in your life

I haven't been here in years so I wasn't sure what to expect. The food was decent but there are better Cuban restaurants in Miami.

Every time I come here, my mother reminds me of all the memories she has coming to this place when she was little. This place has been around for that long. Literally. See the servers? They are the original servers from when this place opened up. The chicken soup is awesome. You HAVE to oder the steak with the mountain of fries on top. You won't regret it!

  • Samual D.

I have to drive 45 minutes to get to Rio Cristal. Worth every minute of the horrible Miami traffic to eat the best steak and fries in Miami-Dade County. The prices are terrific, and because there is enough food for two meals, it is like getting two meals for the price of one. Tip: Order the steak rare or medium rare. The steak seems to always come out one temperature higher than what is asked for. And, by ordering it rare, it won't be overcooked when reheated the next meal.

I decided to take my boys since they love cuban food. The portions were huge and the food was pretty good.I had the chicken steak and the boys had the rio cristal steak which was well seasoned. The fries were kinda soggy but good. The food had somewhat of a greasy taste but i would probably go back and have the steak sandwich. The price was reasonable considering the huge portions.Make sure you ask for napkins bc the service was slow.

A very nice hole in the wall restaurant that I would have never have known was there unless I was with a Cuban that suggested it. Steak and fries was to die for and even the "small" steak is bigger then the plate. Cuban sandwich left a little to be desired but all and all a very pleasant meal at an affordable price. Well worth a special trip off the turnpike to stop and eat lunch.

Love authentic Cuban food? Look no further ! This spot is great and has a fast friendly staff to boot! The Cuban sandwiches and steaks are great but all the entrees have their own flare! Finish off with cafe con lechwe or flan!

The pescado empanizado was delicious! They give large portions, and you can't leave without trying the flan!

Not a fan- I'm a picky eater. There were onion chunks in my plantains steak was alright, rice was hard with no salt. And the NO REFILLS ON SODA

  • Elizabeth M.

This is as close as it gets to your Cuban Grandma's home cooking! This place hasn't been renovated since the dark ages and they like it that way. You can find the menu on your placemat with just about anything grandma would cook for you! I like to keep it simple and go with the Rio Cristal Steak with French fries. The steak is huge so come with an appetite or share like I did. It comes out within minutes, cooked to palomilla perfection and it's always consistent. I love the mountain of fries! Soooo good. Save enough room for flan - delicious, creamy and made just right.

To summarize my experience, my mouth tasted like rancid oil all the way home. Yes, you read correctly, and if you are surprised, so am I. After reading the reviews and looking at the ratings, I expected something at least decent from Rio Cristal, but no, not this Rio. Things began with a shaky start. I arrived and decided to seat at the counter, since I was flying solo. I took seat right in the middle of the counter, and when I sat down, the stool began to shake like a rodeo bull and I almost fell off. I balanced myself, and before moving to the stool next to me, I touched it to test it. It was shaky too. The stools next to me were all busted and wobbly. Apparently the rubbers are worn out or the hydraulics are gone, but the point is that you will be tilted if you eat at the counter. Unless you have really good balance, you are some Martial Arts nut or you want to exercise you buttocks while you eat, seat at a table. I asked for a batido de mamey, and the lady at the counter told me they don't make batidos, they make milkshakes. I then asked for a soda, Jupiña, and I ordered a bistec empanizado with fries and congri. She took the order and screamed from the kitchen that they had ran out of congri. What Cuban restaurant runs out of congri? Alright, rice and beans, I said. When the food came I had a plate of fries with the breaded steak at the bottom, a plate with rice, a bowl of beans, and some buttered toast. I asked for mayo and mustard. Mayo came in a dish, mustard on a yellow bottle where French's Yellow Mustard was hardly legible anymore. Trying to get to the steak was harder than I thought. Fries were flying left and right. The harder I fought for my steak, the more fries that flew at me. In the middle of the battle my sciatic nerve started to bother me. Damn stools, I thought. I ate a few fries to make space to get to the steak, and unfortunately found the sorriest breaded steak I have ever had. The steak was soggy and greasy. It was thicker than usual, but it was not cooked right and the breading had formed a paste instead of a crunchy surface. I ate as much as I could, but left a third of it on the plate. The rice and beans had a homemade taste and I found that to be nice. After that "epic fail", the question I necessarily ask myself is, how come people love this place? Everything is decrepit here. Rio Cristal is a time bubble of the eighties, or before. If Scarface is your cult classic, Rio Cristal may be for you. Whether you like the senior staff dressed in black and white, or looking into a kitchen that looks like a warehouse in Hialeah but where not even a gay cook singing "la morena quiere mas" makes things livelier, Rio Cristal could seriously disappoint you. My visit was a disaster, and I seriously doubt I will ever visit again. Rio Cristal is definitely not for me, and for some reason I feel that sucks.

dirty place!!....plantains came in a mush...looked horrible....we had to return the pork!! in a cuban place you cannot make good pork ?!! service was horrible.... they never picked up one plate during the whole meal!!! then they left the wet and dirty cleaning rag on the table until we left ...The flan was the only good thing ....we will never come back !!!

Ok, it's a dump, but it's the best Cuban food in Miami. Their black beans are just like the homemade ones that my friends Mother made when she was alive and hers were the best, nice and thick and none of that runny stuff. Highlights are the steak, the in house made french fries that they give you a ton of, the lechon (pork, Saturday special), and don't miss the cheese flan if they have it which is so rich you can barely finish it. I love to take someone there for the first time and order them the steak which comes under a mountain of fries and then see their face when it is placed before them. This place is miles above Versailles and better known Cuban restaurants.

Perfect Cuban Dive. Nothing fancy about the ambience- well there is no ambience. This is straight up about the palomillas and papita frita!!! They make you a huge palomilla that falls off the side of the plate just like abuelita. And they specialize in these amazing julienne fries. Before you go eat the flan or my personal favorite the tocinillo del cielo.

Great Cuban food, amazing sandwiches. Portions are very large, great for sharing. Really good quality, great service. The stake is amazing and the flan one of the best I've had.

This is the real deal. Steak with fries is very good. Flan is among the best. The service is unique. By that I mean they have their style of serving which if you are unfamiliar seems cold or lacking in detail. Boliche is also good.

DO NOT go here if you want to go somewhere pretty. It's a hole in a strip mall in the heart of Westchester that could very easily go unnoticed..... But it doesn't. Why, you ask? Because behind those front doors, past those ugly little brown booths, lies a kitchen that cranks out heaven in the form of vaca Frita, steak, fries, maduros (sweet fried plantain, for you non S. Fl. Residents) and flan. The steaks are as long as the plate it comes on, and COMPLETELY HIDDEN underneath an avalanche of the best greasy fries you've ever had. The vaca Frita? Perfection. It's crunchy, but not dry at all. The flan? It's milky, dense, no air bubbles, and it does not have the consistency of jell-o (yuck) that many other flans do . It is the envy of every Cuban Abuela who has tried to make the best flan for years. Of course, the menu at Rio Cristal is extensive and they offer much more than that, but these dishes are the ones I find amazing. By all means, order something else; I don't expect you'll be disappointed!

Traditional Cuban food with the best palomilla steak! A little hole in the wall that's been around forever! A family favorite dinner spot!

Take a Tums before you eat here. The steak is decent but the fries are extremely oily. The place is very dirty. Our glass was dirty and even the take out plate was dirty. It's amazing this place passes inspection and remains open. The food is ok.

If you're from Westchester... or even if you're from Miami, you know that the thing to get at Rio Cristal is the flan. Plain and simple. You'll also know that Rio Cristal is known for throwing mounds upon mounds of fries on top of just about any meal there. And if you know your Westchester history, you'll know that the joint is owned by the same who guy who owned Lila's Restaurant, which was unfortunately knocked down and replaced by a Walmart. Anyway... the flan! Best flan you'll ever have. It's not jelly-like, but it's not custard-like either like a creme brulee. It's just right. I don't know how to explain it. The caramel flavors are perfect, and the flan can only be consumed with a cortadito acting as chaser. Seriously... Rio works best as a desert spot. The other food is pretty run-of-the-mill, greasy Cuban... but the flan. Trust me.

I was expecting more since they had such great reviews but the service for one sucked! The food is way over priced and lacking flavor. I paid 18$ for a plate which I could have just gone to my grandma's and had a way better tasting meal. I was extremely disappointed. Won't ever be going there again.

Straight from your abuelas kitchen ! I visited this restaurant this past weekend and loved it! The staff is very nice, my waiter was a trip! And the service was on point. Although the decor is outdated, the place is clean and the food is DELICIOUS. The bread they start you off with is hot and fresh. I went with steak because every review raved about it and I was definitely not disappointed. Portions are HUGE so you can share! I got a bistec empanizado and my mom got the famous rio cristal steak smothered with a pile of fries and caramelized onions. Both were exceptional! We had arroz con frijoles and they were also good but the maduros didn't taste as fresh. My waiter insisted that I try the famous flan although I was beyond stuffed -- no regrets. You MUST try it!!! All in all, I love this place! I'll definitely be back.

Growing up in Miami and coming here almost every Saturday night skewed my view of what is meant by Cuban Food. I have spent my life trying other "Cuban" food from New York to Los Angeles and I am about to give up and admit that until I go back to Miami I won't find ropa vieja or picadillo. What I am saying is that this is the best Cuban food in the country, enjoy.

i've been coming here for years and I never been dissapointed with the food, yes I know the place is old and outdated and the service is a hit and miss, but that steak and fries can't be beat, One of my go places when visiting Miami.

Very Disappointed. The croquetas were like the ones you buy at publix. The Milanesa de pollo is ridiculously priced at 18 dollars. When down the street at Sergio is 12 and double the size. Service was terrible and NO FREE REFILL ? Are you kidding me its 2014 !!!

This is the first time my fellow Yelpers have lead me down a dark path of deception. Everyone who gave this place stellar ratings must've been either stoned, starving, or on their way home from prison when they dined here. If this is what your mom or abuela's cooking tastes like, my deepest condolences. The food was mediocre at best. My husband's ropa vieja tasted odd - like olives, the black beans tasted like straight oil, and my steak... Oh the steak, it was tasteless, greasy, and overcooked. It was inedible and it went to waste. The massive mountain of papitas topping my steak was bland and greasy. Service was OK, the abuela-esque server was attentive but seemed a little annoyed. I must give her points for honesty, she recommended the chicken strips vs the grouper fingers for my toddler since "the fish is frozen, I don't like to give it to babies." Good lookin out, Abuela! The children's chicken strips were actually the best thing that came to our table. My apologies to my kid bc I ate most of her meal. Another reason this place gets more than the mandatory single star - the flan. Rich, creamy, with strong, delicious caramel. That was some good flan. Cuban coffee, also a fail. Bestest part of the evening - the pungent stench we took home. Nothing like a constant reminder of a bad meal as you open your purse the next day. We won't be back. And fellow Yelpers, you shan't fool me again.

My mother has been going since 1983 and I've been enjoying it since I've been in her womb. I love this place. I no longer live in Miami but make sure to eat here when I visit. The place hasn't changed inside since the 80's but that just adds to its character. They have had the same serving staff for years as well. 95% of the time that I go I order the bistec. It comes with these greasy shoestring fries which are delicious but I can see how some say it taste like grease. To me, it taste like grandma who uses the grease more than once. I've never had a rancid batch, thankfully. It is also accompanied by white rice and black beans. All super tasty for $12. This time I had a friend I was showing around town so I ordered the super Rio bistec $17) and it was massive for one. But with the order of an appetizer or additional side and dessert, a perfect meal for two. We purchased the rio bistec and two beverages for $21. We also received complimentary bread but no salad as others mentioned. I love this place with its mix match silver wear and yummy eats and think everyone should stop by at some point to experience a perfectly cooked Cuban steak. *note- I ordered my steak medium and it was cooked all the way but still tender. Yum!

  • Nino R.

First visit was ok. The flavor of the Bistec Empanizado was decent. All I could taste was the oil. I covered it with lime juice, but the oil is all that I could taste. The size, however, was ridiculous. Seriously, the steak was bigger than my head. I got through half the steak before I waved the white flag. Beans were just ok and the rice was average. My GF ordered the Camarones Enchiladas. I'd recommend that over the empanizado for sure. The shrimp were plentiful and the sauce had great flavor. It was also served with a side of ok black beans and average white rice. The draw of this place is the pricing. For the portion size, they have no equal. I'm sure they make other great dishes, but I was disappointed with my choice. I'll be visiting again in the future and I'll be trying their other steak offerings. Miami Meat...

Besides enjoying my talks with the sweetest old lady waitresses at this place, their 'Bistec Super Rio Cristal' topped with a Mt. Everest of papitas fritas is, well, super. If you stood the steak next to me, I swear it would probably beat me in height by a head. I know I'm a funsized chick, but that's still pretty impressive. Please, I ask of you, don't order your steak well done and then complain it tasted leathery....unless you were planning on wearing it later. The medium, and even medium well is just right, I promise. This delicious establishment is located in a shopping center surrounded by other very yummy, and also pretty useful places. I'm thinking of moving there. I'd be able to hit up Pincho Factory all the time for my burgers, Salsa Lovers to keep my Cuban moves fressshh, and then visit attorney Alex Hanna just in case something goes wrong while dancing, and am in need of his representation.

Not a fancy place AT ALL, but the food was as good as my mother's cooking. That's the greatest compliment I can give... My mom THROWS IT DOWN in the kitchen! There was no room in our table from how much food we ordered and our bill was SUPER cheap. Will definitely go back.

    (5)
  • Raul D.

The bistec empanizado is a popular dish, and everyone likes the homemade french fries. They make their own flan, so make sure you save some room. Their portions are large, saving room is hard. Service is friendly/cuban type.

this place has been open for 44 years -- who knew?! not me! the great nathalie g. suggested we eat here. she said it would be the best bistec con paticas ever. she might be right. first off, the inside is reminiscent of a 70's diner. i'm sure it hasn't been upgraded since, but who cares? the waitresses are so cute they could easily be my abuelita. i felt like hugging them they were so cute. you are given complimentary bread and salad to start. we ordered the tamal to start which was ehhhh. and shared a 'bistec rio cristal'. it comes with a mountain of papitas fritas, yes a MOUNTAIN of papitas. it also comes with a layer of chopped onions. it was the perfect combination. oh, and parking in this plaza sucks!

A really bad choice, not real cuban food, service ok but every thing we order (four persons) was a disaster, was because its sunday ?. I will never come back to this place !.

Anytime youre in the mood for abuelitas cooking, you gotta come here. This is hands down the most authentic home cooked style of cuban food out. The flan is hands down the best in miami, ill say it again for those who werent paying attention"they have the best flan in miami "

  • Jessi B.

I've been going to Rio Cristal my whole life. You cannot go wrong with some maduros, rice and beans, and a palomilla steak medium. **Make sure you specify how you want it cooked. People complaining about "leathery steak" got their's well done.

  • Dan M.

What what!!! This place is the Sh*t! I love the cafeteria style bench, I love the crappy salad, I love the "Special Sauce", I love the toasted bread............Break sorry i had to go eat some vacafrita and come back. Damn this place is great! Take your out of towners!

  • Rickie G.

Been here a lot and just realized I've never reviewed it. The food is real good, the staff is pretty friendly and the prices are good. I haven't been let down by anything yet. My favorite plate is the palomilla with fries, good stuff!

    (4)
  • Lara R.

I could eat the black beans and rice from here all day long!! The maduros are a little too squishy for my taste but still good and you can tell they are made fresh not frozen. The fries are great. The place is comfy and looks a couple decades old. The staff is friendly and prompt and it felt like I was visiting friends not at a restaurant.

    (5)
  • Rolando G.

I came back for dinner take-out, and as another review suggested, I tried the ropa vieja. Wow, thats all I have to say. I got it with maduros (amazing!) and arroz moro. These people cook like grandma, ingredients and everything! Must try it... their bistec is awesome too.

    (5)
  • Enrique M.

The fried steak (bistec empanizado) felt slimy like a lizard. When I asked for ketchup I recieved a cold refrigerated bottle of ketchup. I then asked for ketchup at room temperature and they said they didn't have any. I was seated at the counter with my son, next to the window where I had to listen to the man call out all the orders. The waitress also had attitude. Not going back anytime soon. Still have a greasy taste in my mouth.

  • Andres V.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, if you don't sit here to eat the Rio Cristal steak (which is a big palomilla steak with onions and fries all over the place) with your family at least once in your life, then you haven't lived. Woe on you if you think I'm exaggerating. Also, their tostones are absurdly delicious. Almost illegally delicious. This little plaza is filled with great places to eat, Rio Cristal could be considered the institution; the anchor that brings that place all together. Oh, and their cafecitos are the bomb.

    (5)
  • Nathalie G.

Holy cow this place is delish!!!! I landed here by accident, and much to my surprise, I had the best "bistec con papitas" ever! Although I had the smaller serving, the portions were INSANE, enough for two to share. And our server was the cutest "viejito" I have ever met in my whole entire life. All in all, I definitely recommend this little place. Don't be taken aback by its old school appearance...I for one, will be back soon, probably with Tania G.

Jewish gringa that I am, my mom did not prepare arroz y frijoles negros for me at home (although I thought it was really funny when she tried to with Goya sofrito as her base... "This is what all my friends use!" she would say). And, clearly, I wasn't personally roasting pigs on Christmas while lighting my menorah. Nevertheless, native-born Miami girl that I am, I freaking love Cuban food. Frankly, I'm infatuated. And, many of my friends enjoy indulging this obsession. So, when someone showed up to my house a few months back with a bag full of take-out from Rio Cristal - Ropa Vieja con arroz & frijoles y papitas and Vaca Frita con platanos - I was delighted to say the least. The black beans had a phenomenal texture, and stood out for their traditional flavors (oregano, bayleaf, some onion and garlic). They tasted fresh and well-prepared (by hand!). The Ropa Vieja disappeared before I could even muster a "thank you." There was no bite left behind. How I missed this place for the 20+ years I lived in Miami (and even commuted to Westchester) is beyond me! But now, every time I come home from Utah (where there is a dearth of Cuban restaurants), Rio Cristal is my first stop. I love walking into the old-school diner with its counter-service and abuelita-style servers. It's awesome. I leave with a smile (at least whenever I'm done chewing). Per Yelp suggestions, I ordered the "Super Bistec Rio Cristal" and it was as delicious and tender as the reviews claimed. Mmm... and the chopped onions compliment it so well, adding to its potency. I've been told (although I didn't try it) that the lechon asada is also pretty spectacular. But, if you don't believe me, go there and taste it for yourself. It's like eating at home, but ten times better. Be forewarned: if you do not speak Spanish, I sincerely advise boning up a bit before heading to Rio Cristal. At the very least, try to be well-versed on your Cuban food items. Now that you've read my review, can someone please mail me a cafe con leche? Please!

I love bringing out-of-towners here. There is nothing like seeing there expression when that ridiculous mountain of fries atop a steak arrives. Not to mention, that it seems to make it to the table just 3 minutes after ordering. Its an unchanged landmark of Cubanism. I do miss the little salad though.

My first visit here and I wasn't impressed. Their food wasn't all that great, my pallomilla steak was leathery and needed more flavor. I've tasted better cuban food for cheaper prices. Also, the waiter was extremely slow and not that friendly. We had to be constantly looking for him whenever we wanted something. The only good thing I found about this place was the portions. It was a lot of food.

All I can say is to bad is not near where I live. There BISTEC EMPANIZADO is so big I had to share with my wife, and lets not talk about there fries are awesome. Then came dessert "THE FLAN" outrageous and homemade. Then coffee of course. Price wise was very good not expensive and the service was as expected very good and fast this place has 5by me

This place is a definitely Miami establishment yet a hole in the wall BUT the food here is delicious! The waiters I think have been since the place opened in Cuba, back in the day. They are old and slow but so funny! This past weekend I took my kids to get some good Ol' Cuban food and we got this waiter who must've been in 70's. SUPER sarcastic but hilarious! At first I got taken a back when I asked for drinks and he said No, he had already given me water but then I realized it was his dry sense of humor. The food as always is delicious. We had a huge Steak with a mountain of fries. My daughter and I shared and still had leftovers. If you have a weak stomach I would definitely suggest taking rolaids or tums prior to coming. There is no shortage here of grease and garlic. Have gringo friends coming to town looking for good Ol' cuban food? This is your place. Make sure to pack them the tums.

Incredible Place! Rio Cristal has the whole "back in the day" diner look with the ole dinner waitresses to go along with it. The parking can be crap at times, but this plaza is very underrated (lots of good food on this one strip). As soon as you walk in, you'll want to sit yourself. We saw what looked to be a hostess stand so we kind of stood around 'til we realized we should just sit ourselves. Beside that, the service was impeccable. Our waitress was an amazing young lady who was probably the only English-speaking waitress they had (Everyone else had that "No Hablo Ingles" look). She was friendly and engaged in conversation with us without being bothersome. I wish we had gotten her name so I could provide a shout-out. Maybe next time. Not only was the service great, but the food was spectacular. Well, at least, one dish in particular. The "Rio Cristal Super Steak Special". The same dish that garnered 4-5 stars from all these other reviewers. I knew I had to try it. One friend ordered the smaller version of it and the other had the Breaded Chicken. The "Super Steak" also came with moros (rice and black beans) and fries. When it came, you could see that it overlapped the plate. Essentially, it is a giant Palomilla steak that comes topped with onions (come raw but you can ask for grilled) and French fries. The flavor of that steak was incredible. I have had palomilla at other Cuban restaurants where it is too thin and dry. That just isn't the case here. The Palomilla was tender, juicy, and not too thin or thick. Came with a perfect blend of seasoning and juices. Just writing this makes me want one right now. The rice and beans were good. No complaints there. The French fries weren't that good. They were soggy and tasted kind of off to me. But again, I did not come here for the fries, nor should you. My friends had the Breaded Chicken, which was just as big as the Super Steak and it tasted great too. The Regular steak special is what a normal person would AND should get. This place is incredible. Service was amazing. Prices are great for the amount of food ($15 for the "Super Steak") Come on an empty stomach if you are thinking of ordering the "Super Steak". Or...do what I will do next time. Get it for lunch and take it home for dinner. There will be enough for 2 meals.

Fries are made fresh and plantains are not frozen, they actually cut and fry them there. The palomilla is just like the one an old cuban grandma would make. The bread is alright. The flan is not as great as it once was but it is still a good flan. Is it GREAT cuban food? No, but it is nostalgic and fun to go back and remember going there when you were little. They still serve the little salads and the inside is decorated just as it was when I was a wee one.

This is hands down, one the absolute best Cuban restaurants you will ever eat at. I feel like it gets better every time I go. The Bistec Rio Cristal is abosolutely legendary. Get it topped with the Papitos (french fries) and ask for grilled onions (instead of the raw ones that come on by default) and you will be in heaven. It is so tender, so flavorful and so memorable, you will seriously question eating at any other Cuban restaurant. It's such an authentic family run restaurant and reminiscent of the way restaurants used to be. The staff makes you feel welcome like the family is having you over to their home and making you some of their family recipes. Most of the waiters have somewhat limited English, which in my opinion is a great sign that this place is legit and authentic. They have a salmon colored special sauce on every table. It's really something of a salad dressing, but it's delicious and I often put it all over everything I eat there. Go! You cannot go wrong!

One of the better and more authentic (as far as I know) Cuban restaurants in our wonderful city. When you find a place that has been open for over 44 years, you know that something has to be right. Let me correct that statement. MOST things have be right. And that's the case with Rio Cristal. The portions are very large, the quality is up there, there is a large selection to choose from, and the ambiance is like what I would imagine to find in a back-in-the-day Cuba. The only part that I found lacking was service, but even that was passable. Especially for a very crowded Saturday lunch rush. Although everyone suggests that you get the Bistec with the mountain of papitas (french fries) just to say you did, I disagree. While it is extremely good, I can't help but feel that most people are more enamored with the size of this dish more than the taste, and I don't mean that as a way of saying that the steak was not good. But I tasted a lot better options on my visit here. First of all, I would skip on the papitas all together and just stick with the maduros. These are probably the best you will find in Miami. And for an entree, I found the Ropa Vieja or Lechon Asado to completely dominate the Bistec in terms of quality, though not quantity. The rice and beans are very typical Cuban sides, and Rio Cristal gets them right. And please, for the love of God, get some flan on your way out.

Few places in Miami bring back memories of my childhood like Rio Cristal does, this place hasn't changed for as long as I can remember and neither has the food. I haven't been here in a few years, mostly because it's bit of a drive from where I live but I had to make it a point to go back just to satisfy my friend's need to find a Palomilla that "doesn't suck", a place that makes it like his beloved Lila's which inexplicably closed a few years back. Enter the Bistec Rio Cristal; not too many places make Palomilla like they do here. Big, juicy, perfectly cooked to order, and covered in a MOUND of little freshly made fries. Sound good? It is. Just be prepared to dig your way down through the fries to get to your meat. Good things never change.

I have been coming to this place with my family since I was a kid. I unfortunately don't live in Miami anymore, but every time I come to visit I always have to stop in for a bite to eat. Now, if you have never been here before don't let the decor turn you off. This place probably hasn't been remodeled in 35 years, but I think it adds to the character of this small hole in the wall place. I must admit the only thing I have ever ordered here is the bistec de pollo. It's a huge piece of chicken breast covered in onions. It is amazing! It comes with a salad and a very hefty side order of the most delicious home made fries I have ever had! For about 10 or 11 bucks it's a really good deal, as I usually can't finish the whole plate and have to take about half of it home. The service here is also great, and pretty much as far back as I can remember it's been the same people who have always worked here. This is a simple no frills Cuban restaurant with some great food, good service, and decent prices!

A few years ago my heart was broken when a small place called Lila's closed down in Westchester Mall. Had I known Rio Cristal had been around for ages I would have saved myself some mourning. Every once in a while I get a craving for a simple palomilla steak topped with raw onions and a mound of french fries, luckily I now know exactly where I can curve this craving! Rio Cristal is all the yumminess with none of the hype! This place isn't much to look at but the food is what will keep you coming back. And come back I will.

The good: There probably isn't a place with more character in Miami. This is old school! My guess is it looks just like it did in 1973 with the wood paneling, cheap wood booths, and huge mirrors. I like that, and I like that the waitress could be my grandmother, and when she comes to the table you have to help her with the tray that's bigger than she is. And I like that the place smells like they're frying something good in the back. I give them an A+ for all that. The bad: Four bites into my bistec empanizado I was gagging on the grease from the breading and the fries which are cooked until they become grease noodles. I opted to scrape off the greasy mess from my steak only to find the meat was tougher than the sole of my shoe. The cut was like a filet of hoof. The only thing that worked was the white rice, but as good as that was it's hard to justify paying $13 for that. The wife's vaca frita was also repugnantly greasy. The place is packed, but I have to believe that has more to do with convenience and nostalgia than anything else because there are hundreds of places in this town where you can get a better Cuban meal.

Rio Cristal is a tiny, hole-in-the-wall Cuban restaurant. They have homemade french fries. The kind your Cuban grandmother used to make and they give you Cuban grandmother-sized portions. Enough fries to satisfy yourself, 5 of your closest cousins, and abuelita. They have been around for over 40 years, and their menu is pretty much like that of all small Cuban restaurants. Plantains cooked in every way imaginable, sandwiches, and all of the other Cuban staples.

  • Gus M.

Ah, one of the classic Bird road staples of homemade Cuban delicacies (that was kind of a joke). Unfortunately, I do not come here enough. I never became a 'regular' like some people, because Lila's was a similar restaurant, and was much closer to me. Their food is excellent, though. I've three different items. The super cheeseburger, their Cuban steak, and the pan con bistec. The latter two are very similar, of course, but the super cheeseburger is something else. It isn't the best burger I've had, but it is huge. It can easily be shared by two people, and be a simple, inexpensive lunch. Maybe cheaper than your regular fast food joint. The best thing, though, is their palomilla steak (or Cuban steak). It is very juicy, not too thin, not too thick, and loaded with an epic mountain of their delicious homemade fries. I'm craving one at this moment. The pan con bistec is about the same, in sandwich form. The service can sometimes be a little too laid back. Waitresses will sometimes sit at the counter while waiting for orders, and the lady working the cash register is old and takes her sweet time. Still, you can't beat the food or price at this place, and I see myself visiting very soon, although I might have to get some convincing done.

I've only had the palomilla steak here. Every time I go there (and I've been going there for many, many years) I tell myself to order something different, just to try... And I can't do it. That hugeomongous steak with the teeny tiny chopped onions and mounds of fries is too tempting to resist. The service is incredible, like you're finally home after being gone for a long time and mama wants to feed you silly. Love it. Located in a small strip mall, there is always parking available. Never a wait for a table and you dont have to wait long for your food. Highly recommended when you want some good, home style Cuban food.

The place is cleaner than the average cuban restaurant; the portions of the bistec palomilla, bistec empanizadado and chicken steak have to be among the largest portions served in miami. The pieces of meat being served resemble a bed sheet, easily cover 1 1/2 plates in size. The fries are greasy, go with maduros instead. Their maduros are excellent, the rice and beans just okay. The prices are a little higher than they should be. $11 for the bistec de palomilla; most places charge $8-9. This bistec is perfectly cooked and seasoned. Some of the $8 ones i have to throw away or feel like im eating cardboard. It is a great place for authentic cuban food, if you like taking home left overs. If ordering take out get 2 dishes for 3 people.

I come here with my dad every once in a while. Before heading there he always asks so, what's your mood today? Because he believes that if you are in a sad mood this place may send you over the edge, lol. It's not particularly dirty but seems that way. The waiters are interesting and usually not that friendly, and it's just a whole in the wall. But the french fries are fresh and delicious. The portions are huge and the bistec empanizado is just unreal. It's a great meal but like my dad believes you have to be in the right state of mind to eat here, read: not on a depressing day. :)

OK. I have been meaning to write this update for a few months but life has been really busy. When I make a mistake, I'm willing to admit it. I was to quick to judge Rio Cristal on just one visit. As I wrote in my original post, I wasn't too impressed with the steak which is their signature dish. When I went back, the waiter this time mentioned something that made a huge difference. He said "you want it really well done right?" I said no! Medium please. Yep that made all the difference. They assume that you want your steak really well done unless you specify otherwise. The steak that come out that time (and all subsequent times I've been back) have been the delicious, Cuban comfort food that I remember from my childhood. The place is dreadfully awesome. The steak sandwich is nothing short of obscene. Its basically a giant steak in between Cuban bread with lettuce, tomato, grilled onions topped with a bucket of the little french fries. For around $7 bucks, it doesn't get any better. But #31 on the menu is the way to go. Its the Rio Cristal Steak with rice, black beans and a mountain of fries. This is not for the health conscious, but if you are looking for a nostalgic, Cuban, artery-clogging experience, this is the best. So basically, I was originally unimpressed because the steak was overdone and tough. But by making it clear you want it medium (at least for me), its delicious.

This place was my life support in the 5 years I called Miami "home" and the 15 "summers" I spent down there. At the young age of 5 my family brought me to this place in 1981 and I have reason to believe it was here that my love affair of french fries and rice and beans came into being. Growing up in the Bronx, I never found another Cuban or Puerto Rican restaurant that comes close. Fast-forward 29 years later and the place is as good as it was as a kid. Still looks like a hole in the wall, and in my world that's a good thing. I haven't had better black beans, garlic bread, tostones and of course, the legendary RIO CRISTAL STEAK! A Mount Everest of french fries buries the thin palomilla-style steak that can sometimes drape over your plate. Even the cherna frita (fried grouper fish) was good. But you really must come here for the steak. Expect not to wanna know about food for days after coming here. And if you're really feeling gutsy and unafraid of your stomach's reaction, order the SUPER RIO CRISTAL STEAK.

Been going here for years! Ever since I was a little girl my mom would take my sister and I here! Great Cuban food and even better prices! Atmosphere is not too exciting but once you try this food you won't be complaining! You would never expect this gem in this location. Their previous location years ago was 117 ave and 40 st and was super huge and nice. But nonetheless I def recommend this place or you can call ahead and just take the food home with you.

The ropa vieja, white rice, black beans, and maduros were good and reasonable as far as taste, flavor, and pricing. The milk shakes a bit pricy at $4.50 each and we bought 4. The place is very casual and laid back. Literally a place to just go grab a bite not to wine and dine! It's look reminds me of a latin Dennis Restaurant. One of the things I likes least is that the food was served in separate plates and by the time I put it all together to beging my eating journey (lol) the food was a bit colder. Service was great. Un viiejito viejito Super attentive.

Went to this place with a friend tonight who insisted that I had to try this place out. I walked in and it looked like I was transported back into the 70s. However, the food was really, really good. I ordered the Super Bistec Rio Cristal which came with fries on the top and the typical onions and cilantro on the steak as well. It also came with a nice side salad well. The steak was very good and the onions and cilantro were perfect. They also really pile the fries up on top, and they were good as well, but it was just way too much potatoes so I only ate about a quarter of them. I did add some lemon juice to the steak which made it even better, but it was good without it. I will definitely be back in the future!

It's true that everyone who works there reminds you of your grandmother or grandfather. It generally does feel like your at your grand parent's place. I ordered the steak and my girlfriend ordered the friend chicken. Don't order an appetizer because whatever you order, I'm sure it is more than enough. If you order french fries they give you a whole plate full over your meal which to describe it is like 3 servings at any other place. The steak and chicken wasn't well seasoned, but they give you like 3 servings of it. I swear I cook better. But maybe I'm just that awesome of a cook. Is it better to have quantity over quality? I don't know, but the quality here isn't bad so the quantity makes the food better. If that makes any sense. OK, so the food isn't amazing, but they give you huge portions for the price and in this economy that counts for something. The service is great as well. I like how they give you a pitcher of water, that way you don't have to wait for someone to come by to fill your cup up. So I gave an extra 2 stars just for the service and quantity. I'd feel bad just ordering one meal and sharing it, but seriously if you did that, it would be more than enough. My girlfriend and I were actually thinking of just ordering to go and getting one meal next time we were hungry and I didn't feel like cooking.

No non sense Cuban food. Order the Palomilla Rio Cristal and you will receive a huge flank steak covered with hand cut french fries and a small salad. All for 13 and change. The service is fast and mostly provided by seniors with a fun mood.

This review comes 5 years late. I was a resident of the great country of Miami, until I decided to move to the USA again (Atlanta to be more exact). My experiences there were always great. Not sure if it is still the same feel, but it was a low profile restaurant in a retail shopping center with old burger-king styled seating, the staff all predominantly Cubans and any of these people could be the mother of one of your friends (*if you live in Miami). The cashier lady used to stink up the entrance with her smokes, but aside from that, nothing can turn you away. The meals are presented simple and done as they do in the islands: each food type is served in a separate plate, all which are overflowing portions. Well seasoned meats, rice, even the juices prepared fresh... Anything you get here is satisfying. I was a big fan of their white rice, and the Plantain chips with the mojo (is a garlic and lime based marinade). Prices are unbeatable, or were unbeatable. Not sure what the prices are nowdays. Come hungry, leave full and still with money in your wallet.

If you are looking for Cuban food here is the place to go. The best dish here to order is the Rio Bistec Empanizado (breaded steak) it comes with a mound of small cut fries and rice and beans. The portion is big enough to feed a family of 4. If you do take out you can feed 6. You definitely need to ask for an additional plate to uncover the steak. I love going here to look around and people watch. This place brings in some unique people starting from the waiters and the ending with the cooks. Where ever I go to eat I love to watch the kitchen action. The place has very old furniture and the place looks like it got stuck in the past, but that's what makes it unique and also affordable.

Best "papitas" in Miami hands down. If you're craving a warm plate of arroz, frijoles, & bistec de palomilla this is the place to go. They bring you a small salad before your meal with some magical orange sauce, that I find myself daydreaming about from time to time. If you want your food quick sit with Jesus, really, he's that fast. The only thing I will mention is that you leave smelling like Cuban food, so I usually where a sweater when I go. But Rio Cristal is worth the smell without a doubt.

I have to admit when i went in to this place i didn't like it not because it was dirty but becaause it looked old but i was greeted by the sweetest old man jesus and i forgot about how ugly the place is don't get me wrong is not the worse place and is not all that ugly just a bit out dated but any ways the food was very satisfying i ordered a pan con bistec that was cut thin the way i like it and it was cooked to perfection.

This place is okay, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. They're known for their steak served with a mound of shoestring thin fries. In my opinion, it's nothing to rant and rave about, but I'll gladly eat it again.

Going to this place is like blasting back 30 years and that is how long its been there. The interior is just like they built it in the 70's. There has not been any remodeling. I guess if it works, don't fix it. The food is great and so are their huge mountain of fries with your steak. I would ask for them on the side, if not you will end up with a mess of fries all over your table. The staff is your typical staff from back in the days. Some of them have been there that long. Everyone has there unique character. Its basically like eating at a relatives house. Great food, great portions, very reasonable to your pocket. Take out is also as good.

I was told to come here after I was reminiscing about lilas and their palomilla covered in a mound of fries... and this place was pretty good, the palomilla was in fact covered in fries, but it wasn't quite the same, lilas had those little skinny fries that were always fried to perfection and underneath was a really great, tasty, palomilla... this place the fries were good, and the palomilla was pretty good, but not really great like I remember lilas, but I would definitely return for another steak under a mound of fries :)

Amazing little cuban place where most the servers remind you of your abuela and most the cooks remind you of your abuelo. Not many people speak english as you can imagine. I always order the Super Rio Cristal Steak with fries to split with another peson. It's a huge thin steak completely covered in fries for a more than reasonable price. Enjoy!

This is by far the best cuban food ever, it reminds you of your abuelas' cooking! We are regulars every saturday we have a late lunch or early dinner there. My husband, kids, and I dont seem to get enough of their cooking ! We always sit with Carlos, and older Cuban gentleman, that may have the worst attitude ever but he is A TRIP the way he speaks, and suggests the items on the menu make you laugh ! WE LOVE RIO CRISTAL ! We have the same items on a weekly basis bistec empanisado and bistec de pollo !

I've been going to this place since I was boy. 30 years later, the decor looks pretty much the same and much of the staff has been there for decades. When it comes to food, three things stand out about this place. The tortilla appetizer is outstanding, and it must be something about the grease they use that changes the flavor of the eggs. Get it as runny as you can. Then of course is the bistec or any of the other meat entrees ( bistec empanizado, masas de puerco) topped with a mound of fries. You cannot go wrong with that, though I strayed once, ordered the milanesa, and was pleasantly surprised. And finally there is the flan: hands down, best in Miami. One thing: be prepared to leave the place with a greasy smell, but I like that. Delicious little place for authentic Cuban food.
