If all the late night Cuban spots are closed (La Carreta, Sergio's, etc.) this place is a sure bet to get your fix. They are most famous for their churros and hot chocolate, especially on those two or three days where it gets below 70 in Miami. If you go on one of those days, prepare to either wait in line, or be ignored by a server unless you get really aggressive. On those non-cold days, you could get decent service from the outdoor cafe servers, but getting waited on a table and such is total overkill. Especially on late nights during the weekend. Out of the four times I've been in the past few months and decided to actually sit down, three of those times the waitress disappeared for a good while between visits to our table. Get ready to flag them down with a look and a wave, because it gets so packed on Friday and Saturday nights, that they have only about two or three waitresses running the entire inside of the restaurant. So the service is a mess, you might have to get in their faces about it. The food on the other hand, is not that bad. The pan con bistec (steak sandwich) has never let me down, the meat is always nice and the bread crunchy. Their churros are pretty good, but make sure they put them in a brown bag, instead of the cheap plastic tray with sugar dumped on top. You need to have that good old brown bag, full of grease spots, with the sugar dancing around inside. Shake it up! I have friends who swear by the coffee at this place, and one buddy of mine loves their Cuban sandwich with a twist (that he came up with). Strawberry jelly on the side. Some say that's an Elena Ruth. He begs to differ.

Please take note, this review is for La Palma's churros & chocolate only. I have yet to actually go inside this La Palma and actually order some real food. That being said, allow me to tell you about Miami's best 'drinking' chocolate. Yes, I call what they serve at La Palma drinking chocolate as their elixir of life transcends that of hot chocolate status and is indeed drinking chocolate. What is drinking chocolate you ask? Simple, imagine you have a chocolate bar. Now imagine someone melted said bar into a cup. Now drink that. Now you know what drinking chocolate is and La Palma is where to find it. However, proceed with caution. La Palma's drinking chocolate is not for the weak of heart. You must not only like chocolate, you must love it and if you do, then YOU WILL LOVE THIS DRINK. La Palma serves their drink in 3 sizes, however the small is plenty....trust me. Make sure get an order of churros with your drink so that you can consume their churros y chocolate in 4 easy steps: 1. Dip churro 2. Eat churro 3. Drink chocolate 4. Repeat Though, to be perfectly honest, their churros aren't tops. One night when my date and I went there we were quite dismayed to find that their churros were frozen and are not handmade. They also serve their churros with WAY too much sugar. Yes, I said it, too much sugar. My date and I both agree that next time we come here, we will ask for the churros without sugar, I mean, hell, you're going to dip them into the drinking chocolate anyways, right? And that's plenty sweet. I feel like the churros they used to sell on the streets were better than La Palma's. Regardless, their churro and chocolate combo is perfect for those rare chilly nights in Miami or when you must simply have a chocolate fix.

really a 3.5 this place is very miami and by that i mean very cuban. its your typical cuban restaurant, think la carreta meets palacio de los jugos. the waitresses are bound to call you "mi amor, mi vida, mijita, etc" they are most well known for the churros, you can get them at the ventanita or inside the restaurant. when its cold, this place gets packed, at any hour of the day you will find a bunch of ppl dipping their churros into the "chocolate" -- that was in spanish by the way, in english, just hot chocolate. but this isnt your usual usual hot chocolate, its thick and creamy. i mean thick, like almost undrinkable. they have all the other regular cuban staples to order. the croquetas are notably good. i havent been since last "winter", lol. but am really looking fwd to a visit soon!!

La Palma turned out to be just what I needed in the wee hours after flying into Miami from the West Coast. Traditional, simple Cuban dishes, well-prepared and very tasty, at reasonable prices. I can't say that the service was excellent, but I do know that I entered the place pretty hungry, left the place really full, didn't spend too awfully much time or money in there, and was pleased enough by the experience to plan to repeat it again soon. People watching was above average as well!! (Next time, I will have to try the churros!)

The food is good, but I leaving only two stars because of some people that work there are not nice. They serve you with the intention to get tips.If they know you won't leave tips they take longer to serve you or they just ignore you. They want you to leave money for whatever thing you buy. Sometimes I just buy a cafe con leche and they look at me like if I have to leave tips. If you are taking out the food, they expect also to get some tips just for giving your food out. Some people don't realize that if you dont eat there, they are just not serving you, so you don't have to leave tips. When you eat there it is ok but they are just wrong in the way they act.

This isn't a 24 hours sit-in indoor restaurant, but it's window is open for business for 24 hours. But this place isn't really known for having the best Cuban food - it probably is standard, although I can't vouch it since I didn't come here for Cuban food. What this place is known for, however, are the churros. Churros are Latin American "doughnuts" in which you can dunk into a hot chocolate, coffee, or whatever of your liking. They basically are dough sticks covered in sugar. The Cuban churros are of the type found in the Caribbean and South America - they're doughy, soft in the center and crispy on the outside. That's vastly different (and in my opinion, superior) from the Mexican style churros which tend to be crispy and dry all over, inside and out. The churros at La Palma is often considered as the best in Miami. And thankfully you can easily get them at any hour of the day or night. It's also a great place to chat with friends over churros and coffee in a casual setting. Roughtly, the long churros cost $1.60 for 4, if I'm right, but no more than that. The hot chocolate costs 75 cents. Very affordable and worth the deal if you have a sweet tooth needing a quick fix. INTERESTING SIDE NOTE: This is the only Cuban restaurant I've witnessed that has a sign up on all of its doors saying that they don't use Trans Fat.

If you want to satisfy for hunger at 3 am after a night of drinking this is the place to be (only if you are too lazy to drive to Sergios or La Carreta) Their service at this time sucks since the staff is worn out and are dying to leave specially after dealing with a bunch of drunks or the herd of old people coming from the Cascada nightclub. Overall the food is not bad but could be better. the Elena Ruth used to be huge full of Strawberry marmalade and packed with cream cheese and turkey, not anymore.

Yelpers, this is also a Churro & Chocolate ONLY review... A friend of mine had been ranting and raving about this place for weeks, so I finally decided to try it out for myself. It was actually during a few weeks back on Saturday when it was freezing for Miami standards... aka 40 degrees oustide. 2 friends and I went to this establishment and decided to get a table indoors as it was raining outside and have some churros and chocolate to cure the chills. The service was good, our order was taken quickly and the food was served in just one moment. However, the churros and chocolate were a bit below expectations. The churros were served warm, but not hoooooot. I like them steamin usually so that the sugar melts on them. That was already kind of a disappointment, but then came the chocolate. It was sooooooo rich and thick, I wasn't sure whether I should eat it or drink it. It tasted great, but I think it should have been a little less rich and maybe then I could have finished even half of it. All in all, the churros and chocolate were good, but not great. I may come back here another day for food, but I'm not sure I'll be recommending La Palma for late-night churros and chocolate.

To me, this is more of a fun, "only in Miami" people-watching spot than a place to enjoy quality food. But, its open 24 hours (translation: good for drunk munchies) and most locals know of it as *the* place to get churros on a chilly night. Most also know that the churros here can only be accompanied (and dunked, of course) in this restaurant's version of hot chocolate, which, to be honest is more like a melted Hershey's bar rather than warmed milk flavored with cocoa. But who cares, consuming calories with reckless abandon is part of the fun at La Palm's (again, I must stress, it's more enjoyable when your drunk). I used to really like the ham croquettes here, but I tried them recently and was slightly disappointed. Stay away, altogether, from the fish croquettes. Not good. At all. Also, if you plan to make a visit to La Palma and don't speak Spanish, make sure to bring someone who does - it'll definitely enhance the experience. Oh, and it's not you, the girls who work the counter are always grumpy.

WARNING! Churro-only review: Went last week as part of the ongoing ChurroQuest 2010, turned away once by the extremely long line, then re-girded our loins for a second try, waiting in line for about 15 minutes in the cold. Way not worth it. I saw the Churro extruder discussed below, but they were using frozen Churros from a box, and furiously slamming them out, bags at a time over the counter. The ones we had were tasteless, wallpaper-pasty oil slick-sticks. Even my kids refused them, and they'll eat dirt if you put sugar on it. Maybe the volume forces them to use the frozen matter; quality regardless, it's like this place is printing money, as the line stretches on forever. Do yourself a favor and slide over to Morro Castle (where they make 'em fresh), or a local Churromania. REVISION: My wife is demanding I drop them to a One Star. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do to keep the peace...

I can't give ZERO stars, otherwise I would. I will never go to this place again. Been twice. The absolute WORST service I have ever seen. Maybe it's because I don't speak Spanish or maybe it isn't. But twice already I have stood at the window waiting to order only to have the little 'citas walk right by me in favor of others standing at the window. I asked if I could order and was given the "uno momento" mumble while she took care of the others who arrived after me then mumbled some things to her waitress friend while gesturing towards me. The first time I was here I had the churros. Yeah, they were okay. But I think the oil was old as they had an off-taste. Didn't want to complain because it wouldn't have done me much good. You can have your stinkin' churro fried bread. There's better comfort food after a cold front anyway. I'm so over this town!! By the way, we were coming from Caffe Italiana, which was great. I'll review later when I get over my absolute disdain for the overrated Las Palmas piece of crap.

For hot chocolate that sticks to your gut and skinny churros that are coated with lots of sugar.... 4 stars. I didn't try anything else and probably never will. I came here for the above and I'll be back for the above until someone tells me I'm missing out on anything else. The churros have a lovely crunch and do not wimp out when they cool down. Dip these in your thick, rich hot chocolate then sip the chocolate at you chew your churros. YUM. I came here on a Tuesday night after 10:30pm and the line was totally short. Still, I was at the window for over 7 minutes waiting for 3 medium hot chocolates and a cafe con leche. 20/20 hind sight, a small hot chocolate would have been plenty for me. I saved my medium chocolate in the refrigerator to see what it'll be like in the morning.

My Spanish is terrible, but the staff here are always kind about the way I mangle a perfectly good language. And the prices can't be beat, especially if you're used to Starbucks. I've only been to the counter, and then only for takeout. Usually we come here for churros (4 for about $2), sticks of freshly fried dough, grooved so they hold more of the cinnamon sugar inside the brown paper sack. Occasionally we'll get some drinks too. Hot chocolate (about $2) is rich and creamy, and thick enough for dipping the churros into, which is kind of the whole point. You can also get Cuban ritalin for a buck or two. They call it una colada, which is Cuban coffee in a small-but-not-tiny cup. It comes with a stack of tiny plastic shot glasses so that you can share it with several friends or coworkers. If you want a rush, though, drink the whole thing yourself. Drink more than two coladas by yourself and you may as well get Ralph Steadman to illustrate your biography, because you will be well and truly in bat country. I briefly considered holding back one star because the parking lot is amazingly tiny, but relented when I realized that a place like this would fill up a ten-story parking garage if there were enough spaces for all its fans. Come here and you'll see why.

I grew up right next this place and still live on the same block. So close in fact, I can smell the days-old grease from my front yard. However, I only go if a friend drags me along. Even drunk me stays away from this place. Service: Beyond rude. If you don't speak Spanish (or in my case, look like you don't speak Spanish) you will be ignored. A friend dragged me along with her and it took her twenty minutes for croquetas. The greeting you get when the "ladies" finally acknowledge you is pretty much "What do you want?" It then takes forever for them to grab your food from the case (eternity of you're waiting for something cooked), charge it, etc. Food: Sub-par at best. Overpriced meals. However, I'll give credit where it's due...the hot chocolate on cold nights hits the spot. Facility: I've never been inside, but I cam see the dust and grime caked ceiling fan in the kitchen from the outside counter. The corner facing 61st Ave smells horrific. Not inviting at all. In fact, it screams "food poisoning". There are too many good places to get Cuban food in this city. Don't waste your money here.

If you want to be hung up on repeatedly for a pick up order this is the place to call!! I use to love coming here but lately THE STAFF is horrible. I called for a pick-up order no joke like five times. They would pick up the phone and hung up that is great customer service let me tell you. When I got there to pick up my order the girls were super rude and on top of it all they had no idea where my order was. I got furious spoke to the manager which really seemed to not care at all. I think they need a reliable staff and better management. They food may be good but replaceable. They are tons of other Latin restaurants around that cook just as good and cheap. Last time they get my $$ that forsure.

Although I must admit I have done this as well I don't believe they are that great! This review is only for the hot chocolate and churros as we stopped by for a hot snack on Saturday to warm up after a cold night of food trucks! Lol. The wait was about 20 minutes but in their defense we were 9. The place is clean inside. Service was decent, I had to ask for a straw for water about 3 times until someone finally brought it. They were really busy so I'm not going to dock them 2 stars for that. As for the hot chocolate it was delicious great flavor but cold. Churros were really good and the warm bread they serve with butter was delicious. The only reason they did not get 5 stars was bc the hot chocolate was not hot and the ok service. I will try them again bf totally going yelp crazy on them for service and cold hot chocolate. Try them out, flavors were definitely good. Ps I prefer thinner hot chocolate not totally liquid but not pudding like, like theirs. It's a preference but still tasted really good!

We were looking for some authentic Spanish style churros con chocolate and as two Spaniards I can tell you we were impressed! The best churros con chocolate I have ever had: fresh, crispy, delicious and what about the chocolate? Deep, dense, smooth and creamy, pure perfection! We liked it so much that we went back a few hours later for lunch and got chicken salad with croquetas (amazing), ropa vieja and fresh fish filet on the grill: both came with rice and fried plantains. We also asked for beans in the side. Overall an extremely pleasant experience. Ah and did I say it already: the best churros ever!!!!
Some people say it doesn't get any better. I beg to differ. However, this is a good option for some things. Late night eating, this is a good bet. Churros with hot chocolate on a cold day? Yes please. The food is not the best, but the prices are good and the service is very good. Also, this place is super Cuban.

Quick service with a smile, at 12:30am Sat. Morning before the rush. Good price and good portions. The walk up window is always an adventure....but the inside dining area is always clean good to come at lunch time or for an early dinner. 5pm to 8pm. La Palma is a very known place in Miami. This is a place for locals. This would be what I would try to find if I were an out of towner. La Palma has been opened since 1979, that's a remarkable reputation. Years of layer upon layer of great food and affordable prices. Their variety is great, you have items on the menu that can take you back to childhood like discos or flying saucers. If it is those 3 to 4 days in the year where the temperature drops in Miami, this place is packed for the very known churros and hot chocolate. I just wish I live closer, plus they are open 24 hours with plenty of parking. I have been a customer for at least 15 years and family members from other states do remember this place for their millanesa steaks. Service is awesome, love the staff and this place. Wouldn't get tired of coming. Had an incredible meal today for only $8.95 Can't wait to comeback.

I definetly have to say that it looks better on the inside than what it does on the outside. They have a painting on the wall where they have drawings of different cuban singers. I found that fascinating. Their tables and chairs looked new and well taken care of, even though this place is not so new. A plus, is that they have their own parking lot which seems to be plentiful for their guests. As soon as I walked in, I wasn't greeted by anyone and the waitress was busy talking to another client (who she seemed to be really close with, because she kissed that clients adolescent son on the cheek). It took her about 10 min to finally come to our table and ask for our order. I ordered una croqueta preparada and so did my bf. My order took longer than usual to make. There were people who arrived and ordered after us, and they received their meal before us. Let me remind you that I ordered a sandwich, not a full plate of food. The waitress herself seemed very nice, but not as attentive because she was busy occupying herself with social matters. The food itself was delicious. They serve the sandwich cut in half, and I was only able to eat half. The other half I took home. The cafe con leche was excellent. I'm not sure what type of milk they use, or what coffee, but that was my favorite part of the meal. The reason for the 3 stars and not 5, is because the waitress wasn't as attentive as she should have been. However, the food was very good and was of good quality.

I've been coming here my entire life. My personal favorite croquetas and the big empanadas de carne! When it's cold myself along with everyone else in Miami lines up for churros and chocolate caliente. The sit down restaurant portion is also very good. There's specials everyday. Soap de platano is yummy and so are the garbanzos. Typical Cuban cuisine. Some of the ladies that work there have been there as long as I can remember. Warning: late night/early morning it's great on the way home from partying to stop in for some munchies to sober up and a colada to wake up. Just know all the crazies from near by motels and brothels seem to patron there around those hours.

Since they're "The Best Hot Chocolate and Churros" in Miami and it's been cold, I decided to check out all the hype. There was a ridiculously long line to order some for take out but my boyfriend went inside and sweet talked a waiter to give us a table just for Churros anyway (kind of how things work in a Cuban restaurant). Service was slow - As in 40 minutes to get the Churros and chocolate and another 40 to to get the check after we were done eating. I can understand they were packed and didn't mind waiting for the food, but the check?! I was trying to pay you! As far as the Churros go - the dough was good, perfect amount of crisp, you could tell it was fresh oil. They're just topped with cups of sugar so really lack flavor if you don't dip them in the chocolate. The hot chocolate was extremely thick, creamy, chocolately, and not too sweet. I'm pretty sure if I let it set it could become a pudding. Overall, it's not worth making lines. I'd go again but with cinnamon in my purse!

If you're looking to eat like a local, good Cuban food, hefty portions that won't break the bank, then this is the spot! I've only come here for the late night churros and hot chocolate. Yes, it gets packed! but with good reason. The churros are crisped to perfection and they give you a good amount. The hot chocolate is super thick, like chocolate fountain thick but is not overwhelmingly sweet so is the perfect combination for your sugary churros.

A 24 hour non pretentious Latin place that serves us classic favorites for reasonable prices? Sign me up! This is not a place is you're looking to be swooned by fancy and creative food. Nor to stare at the amazing decor. This really is like going to eat at Abuelas house. I tried the split pea soup which was absolutely delicious! It had chunks of chorizo and a smooth and creamy texture that left me wanting more. And the cup is seriously as big as a bowl ! As my main course, I had a Cuban steak sandwich. It was pretty good. The steak was soft and not chewy. It could have used more seasoning, but it was still pretty darn tasty. The service was fast and the tables clean. All In all, I will return. It's easy to enjoy a place when you feel right at home.

parents came here last year, said churros and hot chocolate were not that good but decided to return this year with me we actually stopped by Versailles first to a packed house with 3 news crews there; we didnt see signs of churros or hot chocolate so we came to La Palma overall, the place is a dump.. but luckily they fried the churros fresh and made the hot chocolate fresh churros were okay, crisp and came in an order of 4 but they are pre frozen so just dont taste good or cooked good they give it to you in a brown paper bag and about 3 cups of sugar poured in the hot chocolate though was pretty good; definitely the 2 stars for the review not too thick not too sweet nice and chocolatey would i return? nah

I'm really upset with this place. Picking up food? CHECK YOUR FOOD, PPL! They offered me no solution or even refund on food that was clearly untouched. I ordered over the phone one dish and they gave me something totally different. I called them as soon as the food arrived to my house and the lady who worked last night said if you bring it back I'll give you a new one. After waiting a few hours for food the last thing you want is to have to go back..well, I went back! Only to have the "manager" ( with pastellito crumbs all over her face) tell me that I got what I ordered. Que que! No! She didn't even so much as offer to the replace the rice which the girl who took the order over the phone admitted was wrong! The manager screamed at me in front of everyone there and humiliated me. Very good food, very well attended. The reason I give this place one star is the cuban employee that started screaming bigoted remarks about Venezuelans not noticing that we were a Venezuelan family consisting of 5 paying customers. Apparently, time stands still here. In the many years I have been eating here, not much has changed. Your typical Cuban fare is the focus of the menu. You won't be surprised and the prices are actually quite reasonable. Breakfast is good and the portions are plentiful. If you like the "Bistec a Caballo" then this is right up your alley. I will say the service was a bit lacking, but it may have been how busy they were on this day. Here's a survival tip..... pay with your credit card, leave the tip in cash. The waitresses will love you.

Super bad service. After 20 min i have to het up to get the menu and water. Only one waiter for the tables and other ine behind the counter, doing anything. I have to ask for the napkins they didn't put any on my table. In top, when I'm paying the waiter tell me that she is tire of walking ti my table. We just stopped in for Churros . We were craving something sweet and our first choice was closed. You get standard Miami service here, so don't expect much more. The Churros were served hot, tasty and with plenty of sugar. Remember to give the bag a couple of good shakes to coat them up really good. The Churros were good, just not amazing. How can you get amazing Churros you ask? It's just fried batter & sugar. Well, I don't know what the secret is, but we always have the best Churros on the planet in Spain. And yes, I will forever compare all Churros to those!

How can I put this into words? This place is the bomb underground late night spot. Open 24/7, La Palma has me getting my pan con bistec and coquetas at all sorts of crazy hours in the morning. Their coffee and churros also come highly recommended. I usually just take my stuff to go since I live in the Gables making this place so clutch. Very nice change from late night McDonald's.

This is the go to place in all of Miami for churros and hot chocolate when the temps drop. You will see a long line outside of Miamians braving the chilly weather just for the churros. Worth it? I would say if you are craving it do it, if not you can really skip this place all together. There is much better Cuban food to be had in Miami.

The waitresses make you feel at home and the food is pretty good. Only negative thing I have to say is that the booths and floors under the tables need to be cleaned. If you drop something, yuck! Just leave it there. And the booths? There's bread and who knows what on the insides of the openings.

The only thing on my mind were the yummy fat, tasty croquetas that I was so used to eating during one of my sudden late-night pregnancy cravings, but I was sadly disappointed! Gone was the outrageous size & distinct taste. In its place was a smaller much greasier version which didn't taste the same. My croqueta preparada sandwich was OK and I quickly understood the reason why. I should have tested a croqueta at the restaurant and avoided paying for the sandwich but I didn't think about it. Lesson learned! Hubby was starving after coming back from a procedure which put him on a liquid diet for an entire day so he told me his steak sandwich was great. I've tasted some amazing pan con bistec and this one was good but nothing over the top! Poor thing. He was probably delirious from the lack of food in his tummy...LOL! I couldn't resist & also ordered two guava empanadas and they were pretty good but I guess I'm spoiled with my mothers homemade ones that have an overload of gooey guava. There was a lot more fried dough than guava. But nonetheless, they were good. So this actually helped the 3 star that I gave them, as well as the excellent customer service from a very friendly and attentive blonde middle aged lady!

First chilly night in South Florida after a wonderful dinner our friends told us we must experience this tradition of going for Churro's and Chocolate. So as much as I love Churro's I was on board. We pull up and there is a line wrapped around the building. My first thought is really? We are seriously going to stand in line for Churro's. ha ha The wonderful men we had were gentleman and gave us their jackets to keep us warm. Yes the wind was quite chilly. I can not begin to tell you how long we stood in line but did not matter, conversation was great and it was fun watching this whole assembly line of staff making these delicious treats. We finally get to order and we grab a table outside on the patio. We ordered twelve Churro's for all to share and hubby decided to get a medium Chocolate. The churro's were hot, very crunchy, great flavor and loads and loads of sugar. They were not the best Churro's I have ever had. More than anything it was the awesome company and the experience. When my friend's said Hot Chocolate, that is exactly what I was thinking. Oh no this hot chocolate was steaming hot, and thick, like a pudding almost. We dipped our Churro's in the chocolate, thank goodness it was way to rich for me. Hubby decides to drink it, oh my all I could think of is glad he has his own bathroom. LOL I do not know what time they are open until. It was late and they still had a line as long as your eye's could see. Much thanks to our wonderful friends for bringing us here and introducing us to this fun place. What a wonderful ending to a fantastic evening. Now I know where to go when it is late and I need my Churro fix.

Now that I don't travel as much, I do go by on my morning commute, and for all times sakes, we sometimes convene here again to catch up on our newest enterprises. What is all the hype? I remember coming to this joint back in 1989 as a child. Boy, were those churros great. I could hardly reach over the counter where all the candies were strategically placed to taunt me. lol :) But those days are long gone. What is all the hype still? Went there not too long ago, stood in a crazy line, only to get mediocre churros. Not the best. And I ordered some croquettas that were not that good either. I don't know why I used to come here as a child, but I suppose this place was once the shizness. Those days are long gone! Not worth the long wait and standing halfway out 8th street. Sorry La Palma.

They put a whole lotta sugar on them and are very tasty! I've been going to La Palma since I was a kid....mostly for the churros (I think they were $1 for a bag of 10 then) but also for the infamous "Disco Volador" (flying saucer sandwiches). A few nights ago, it was after 10pm and I was absolutely starving. It was too late for for delivery. Luckily I remembered about La Palma & that they are open 24 hours so I quickly made my way over there. I ordered a Guarapo (The menu said $3.19 but they charged me $2.75), a Disco Volador w/ ham, cheese, & chorizo ($3.99) and a Frita ($3.69). I was sharing....I swear ;) LoL My Disco Volador was good, but they didn't cut off the crust like they used to. The churros were crunchy and sweet.... & loaded with sugar. The guarapo was refreshing but I wish it were cheaper....I could drink it by the gallon! I'm not sure what happened when Robert was there but they were making fresh batches of churros for other customers while I waited for my food. The same old machine that was there when I used to go as kid was still being used. They pull down on the giant metal wheel to force the batter out, then grab the churro (with their hands....) to break it off and drop it into the fryer. They also fried up a bunch of those giant elephant-ear-looking guava empanadas while I was there.....yum! I must point out that Frita was not my favorite. It was alright but not like El Mago's. It had wayy to much paprika and cumin (?) and I'm certain this was a pre-made patty or something. I have to say that although this place is really dirty and could use several hours......make that days.....of elbow grease their food is really good and they're open around the clock. They are always packed whenever I drive by which means they must be doing something right.

La Palma is a very known place in Miami. This is a place for locals. This would be what I would try to find if I were an out of towner. La Palma has been opened since 1979, that's a remarkable reputation. Years of layer upon layer of great food and affordable prices. Their variety is great, you have items on the menu that can take you back to childhood like discos or flying saucers. If it is those 3 to 4 days in the year where the temperature drops in Miami, this place is packed for the very known churros and hot chocolate. I just wish I live closer, plus they are open 24 hours with plenty of parking. I have been a customer for at least 15 years and family members from other states do remember this place for their millanesa steaks. Service is awesome, love the staff and this place. Wouldn't get tired of coming. Had an incredible meal today for only $8.95 Can't wait to comeback.

I definetly have to say that it looks better on the inside than what it does on the outside. They have a painting on the wall where they have drawings of different cuban singers. I found that fascinating. Their tables and chairs looked new and well taken care of, even though this place is not so new. A plus, is that they have their own parking lot which seems to be plentiful for their guests. As soon as I walked in, I wasn't greeted by anyone and the waitress was busy talking to another client (who she seemed to be really close with, because she kissed that clients adolescent son on the cheek). It took her about 10 min to finally come to our table and ask for our order. I ordered una croqueta preparada and so did my bf. My order took longer than usual to make. There were people who arrived and ordered after us, and they received their meal before us. Let me remind you that I ordered a sandwich, not a full plate of food. The waitress herself seemed very nice, but not as attentive because she was busy occupying herself with social matters. The food itself was delicious. They serve the sandwich cut in half, and I was only able to eat half. The other half I took home. The cafe con leche was excellent. I'm not sure what type of milk they use, or what coffee, but that was my favorite part of the meal. The reason for the 3 stars and not 5, is because the waitress wasn't as attentive as she should have been. However, the food was very good and was of good quality.

I've been coming here my entire life. My personal favorite croquetas and the big empanadas de carne! When it's cold myself along with everyone else in Miami lines up for churros and chocolate caliente. The sit down restaurant portion is also very good. There's specials everyday. Soap de platano is yummy and so are the garbanzos. Typical Cuban cuisine. Some of the ladies that work there have been there as long as I can remember. Warning: late night/early morning it's great on the way home from partying to stop in for some munchies to sober up and a colada to wake up. Just know all the crazies from near by motels and brothels seem to patron there around those hours.

Since they're "The Best Hot Chocolate and Churros" in Miami and it's been cold, I decided to check out all the hype. There was a ridiculously long line to order some for take out but my boyfriend went inside and sweet talked a waiter to give us a table just for Churros anyway (kind of how things work in a Cuban restaurant). Service was slow - As in 40 minutes to get the Churros and chocolate and another 40 to to get the check after we were done eating. I can understand they were packed and didn't mind waiting for the food, but the check?! I was trying to pay you! As far as the Churros go - the dough was good, perfect amount of crisp, you could tell it was fresh oil. They're just topped with cups of sugar so really lack flavor if you don't dip them in the chocolate. The hot chocolate was extremely thick, creamy, chocolately, and not too sweet. I'm pretty sure if I let it set it could become a pudding. Overall, it's not worth making lines. I'd go again but with cinnamon in my purse!

If you're looking to eat like a local, good Cuban food, hefty portions that won't break the bank, then this is the spot! I've only come here for the late night churros and hot chocolate. Yes, it gets packed! but with good reason. The churros are crisped to perfection and they give you a good amount. The hot chocolate is super thick, like chocolate fountain thick but is not overwhelmingly sweet so is the perfect combination for your sugary churros.

Nor to stare at the amazing decor. This really is like going to eat at Abuelas house. I tried the split pea soup which was absolutely delicious! It had chunks of chorizo and a smooth and creamy texture that left me wanting more. And the cup is seriously as big as a bowl ! As my main course, I had a Cuban steak sandwich. It was pretty good. The steak was soft and not chewy. It could have used more seasoning, but it was still pretty darn tasty. The service was fast and the tables clean. All In all, I will return. It's easy to enjoy a place when you feel right at home.

WARNING! Churro-only review: Went last week as part of the ongoing ChurroQuest 2010, turned away once by the extremely long line, then re-girded our loins for a second try, waiting in line for about 15 minutes in the cold. Way not worth it. I saw the Churro extruder discussed below, but they were using frozen Churros from a box, and furiously slamming them out, bags at a time over the counter. The ones we had were tasteless, wallpaper-pasty oil slick-sticks. Even my kids refused them, and they'll eat dirt if you put sugar on it. Maybe the volume forces them to use the frozen matter; quality regardless, it's like this place is printing money, as the line stretches on forever. Do yourself a favor and slide over to Morro Castle (where they make 'em fresh), or a local Churromania. REVISION: My wife is demanding I drop them to a One Star. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do to keep the peace...

I'm really upset with this place. Picking up food? CHECK YOUR FOOD, PPL! They offered me no solution or even refund on food that was clearly untouched. I ordered over the phone one dish and they gave me something totally different. I called them as soon as the food arrived to my house and the lady who worked last night said if you bring it back I'll give you a new one. After waiting a few hours for food the last thing you want is to have to go back..well, I went back! Only to have the "manager" ( with pastellito crumbs all over her face) tell me that I got what I ordered. Que que! No! She didn't even so much as offer to the replace the rice which the girl who took the order over the phone admitted was wrong! The manager screamed at me in front of everyone there and humiliated me. I was so insulted by the whole thing i left the food on the counter. Zero costumer service and class.

La Palma is always solid....cheap, good, with great service. No matter what time you go. The walk up window is always an adventure....but the inside dining area is always clean good to come at lunch time or for an early dinner. 5pm to 8pm. The weekend late night crowd is quite an adventure...the people watching is incredible. Show begins at 1:30 am til 5 am.

parents came here last year, said churros and hot chocolate were not that good but decided to return this year with me we actually stopped by Versailles first to a packed house with 3 news crews there; we didnt see signs of churros or hot chocolate so we came to La Palma overall, the place is a dump.. but luckily they fried the churros fresh and made the hot chocolate fresh churros were okay, crisp and came in an order of 4 but they are pre frozen so just dont taste good or cooked good they give it to you in a brown paper bag and about 3 cups of sugar poured in the hot chocolate though was pretty good; definitely the 2 stars for the review not too thick not too sweet nice and chocolatey would i return? nah

This review is only for the hot chocolate and churros as we stopped by for a hot snack on Saturday to warm up after a cold night of food trucks! Lol. The wait was about 20 minutes but in their defense we were 9. The place is clean inside. Service was decent, I had to ask for a straw for water about 3 times until someone finally brought it. They were really busy so I'm not going to dock them 2 stars for that. As for the hot chocolate it was delicious great flavor but cold. Churros were really good and the warm bread they serve with butter was delicious. The only reason they did not get 5 stars was bc the hot chocolate was not hot and the ok service. I will try them again bf totally going yelp crazy on them for service and cold hot chocolate. Try them out, flavors were definitely good. Ps I prefer thinner hot chocolate not totally liquid but not pudding like, like theirs. It's a preference but still tasted really good!

We were looking for some authentic Spanish style churros con chocolate and as two Spaniards I can tell you we were impressed! The best churros con chocolate I have ever had: fresh, crispy, delicious and what about the chocolate? Deep, dense, smooth and creamy, pure perfection! We liked it so much that we went back a few hours later for lunch and got chicken salad with croquetas (amazing), ropa vieja and fresh fish filet on the grill: both came with rice and fried plantains. We also asked for beans in the side. Overall an extremely pleasant experience. Ah and did I say it already: the best churros ever!!!!
Some people say it doesn't get any better. I beg to differ. However, this is a good option for some things. Late night eating, this is a good bet. Churros with hot chocolate on a cold day? Yes please. The food is not the best, but the prices are good and the service is very good. Also, this place is super Cuban.

The food is good, but I leaving only two stars because of some people that work there are not nice. They serve you with the intention to get tips.If they know you won't leave tips they take longer to serve you or they just ignore you. They want you to leave money for whatever thing you buy. Sometimes I just buy a cafe con leche and they look at me like if I have to leave tips. If you are taking out the food, they expect also to get some tips just for giving your food out. Some people don't realize that if you dont eat there, they are just not serving you, so you don't have to leave tips. When you eat there it is ok but they are just wrong in the way they act.

First chilly night in South Florida after a wonderful dinner our friends told us we must experience this tradition of going for Churro's and Chocolate. So as much as I love Churro's I was on board. We pull up and there is a line wrapped around the building. My first thought is really? We are seriously going to stand in line for Churro's. ha ha The wonderful men we had were gentleman and gave us their jackets to keep us warm. Yes the wind was quite chilly. I can not begin to tell you how long we stood in line but did not matter, conversation was great and it was fun watching this whole assembly line of staff making these delicious treats. We finally get to order and we grab a table outside on the patio. We ordered twelve Churro's for all to share and hubby decided to get a medium Chocolate. The churro's were hot, very crunchy, great flavor and loads and loads of sugar. They were not the best Churro's I have ever had. More than anything it was the awesome company and the experience. When my friend's said Hot Chocolate, that is exactly what I was thinking. Oh no this hot chocolate was steaming hot, and thick, like a pudding almost. We dipped our Churro's in the chocolate, thank goodness it was way to rich for me. Hubby decides to drink it, oh my all I could think of is glad he has his own bathroom. LOL I do not know what time they are open until. It was late and they still had a line as long as your eye's could see. Much thanks to our wonderful friends for bringing us here and introducing us to this fun place. What a wonderful ending to a fantastic evening. Now I know where to go when it is late and I need my Churro fix.

As a traveling sales man, this was always one of my must stops for coffee, tostada and good conversations with my sales team before we dispersed to make things happen in the Magic City. Now that I don't travel as much, I do go by on my morning commute, and for all times sakes, we sometimes convene here again to catch up on our newest enterprises. I find the place refreshingly relaxed, basic good food and informal and warm service. It is vintage Miami, what is not to like ?

If you want to be hung up on repeatedly for a pick up order this is the place to call!! I use to love coming here but lately THE STAFF is horrible. I called for a pick-up order no joke like five times. They would pick up the phone and hung up that is great customer service let me tell you. When I got there to pick up my order the girls were super rude and on top of it all they had no idea where my order was. I got furious spoke to the manager which really seemed to not care at all. I think they need a reliable staff and better management. They food may be good but replaceable. They are tons of other Latin restaurants around that cook just as good and cheap. Last time they get my $$ that forsure.

For hot chocolate that sticks to your gut and skinny churros that are coated with lots of sugar.... 4 stars. I didn't try anything else and probably never will. I came here for the above and I'll be back for the above until someone tells me I'm missing out on anything else. The churros have a lovely crunch and do not wimp out when they cool down. Dip these in your thick, rich hot chocolate then sip the chocolate at you chew your churros. YUM. I came here on a Tuesday night after 10:30pm and the line was totally short. Still, I was at the window for over 7 minutes waiting for 3 medium hot chocolates and a cafe con leche. 20/20 hind sight, a small hot chocolate would have been plenty for me. I saved my medium chocolate in the refrigerator to see what it'll be like in the morning.

My Spanish is terrible, but the staff here are always kind about the way I mangle a perfectly good language. And the prices can't be beat, especially if you're used to Starbucks. I've only been to the counter, and then only for takeout. Usually we come here for churros (4 for about $2), sticks of freshly fried dough, grooved so they hold more of the cinnamon sugar inside the brown paper sack. Occasionally we'll get some drinks too. Hot chocolate (about $2) is rich and creamy, and thick enough for dipping the churros into, which is kind of the whole point. You can also get Cuban ritalin for a buck or two. They call it una colada, which is Cuban coffee in a small-but-not-tiny cup. It comes with a stack of tiny plastic shot glasses so that you can share it with several friends or coworkers. If you want a rush, though, drink the whole thing yourself. Drink more than two coladas by yourself and you may as well get Ralph Steadman to illustrate your biography, because you will be well and truly in bat country. I briefly considered holding back one star because the parking lot is amazingly tiny, but relented when I realized that a place like this would fill up a ten-story parking garage if there were enough spaces for all its fans. Come here and you'll see why.

What is all the hype? I remember coming to this joint back in 1989 as a child. Boy, were those churros great. I could hardly reach over the counter where all the candies were strategically placed to taunt me. lol :) But those days are long gone. What is all the hype still? Went there not too long ago, stood in a crazy line, only to get mediocre churros. Not the best. And I ordered some croquettas that were not that good either. I don't know why I used to come here as a child, but I suppose this place was once the shizness. Those days are long gone! Not worth the long wait and standing halfway out 8th street. Sorry La Palma.

LOVED their churros, hot chocolate- not so much. It was very thick and very chocolate-y which isn't a bad thing.. just not my taste for hot chocolate. Their churros are fresh and worth the wait! They put a whole lotta sugar on them and are very tasty! Some of the staff moves quickly to get your order but others are just a tad slow but that's sort of to expect when you eat at Latin American restaurants!

I've been going to La Palma since I was a kid....mostly for the churros (I think they were $1 for a bag of 10 then) but also for the infamous "Disco Volador" (flying saucer sandwiches). A few nights ago, it was after 10pm and I was absolutely starving. It was too late for for delivery. Luckily I remembered about La Palma & that they are open 24 hours so I quickly made my way over there. I ordered a Guarapo (The menu said $3.19 but they charged me $2.75), a Disco Volador w/ ham, cheese, & chorizo ($3.99) and a Frita ($3.69). I was sharing....I swear ;) LoL My Disco Volador was good, but they didn't cut off the crust like they used to. The churros were crunchy and sweet.... & loaded with sugar. The guarapo was refreshing but I wish it were cheaper....I could drink it by the gallon! I'm not sure what happened when Robert was there but they were making fresh batches of churros for other customers while I waited for my food. The same old machine that was there when I used to go as kid was still being used. They pull down on the giant metal wheel to force the batter out, then grab the churro (with their hands....) to break it off and drop it into the fryer. They also fried up a bunch of those giant elephant-ear-looking guava empanadas while I was there.....yum! I must point out that Frita was not my favorite. It was alright but not like El Mago's. It had wayy to much paprika and cumin (?) and I'm certain this was a pre-made patty or something. I have to say that although this place is really dirty and could use several hours......make that days.....of elbow grease their food is really good and they're open around the clock. They are always packed whenever I drive by which means they must be doing something right.

You see a familiar food stand that has been around for ages. stop here. walk up to counter- order tostada, 2 croquetas and a batido de trigo ( or mamey, whatever your preference) . I grew up right next this place and still live on the same block. So close in fact, I can smell the days-old grease from my front yard. However, I only go if a friend drags me along. Even drunk me stays away from this place. Service: Beyond rude. If you don't speak Spanish (or in my case, look like you don't speak Spanish) you will be ignored. A friend dragged me along with her and it took her twenty minutes for croquetas. The greeting you get when the "ladies" finally acknowledge you is pretty much "What do you want?" It then takes forever for them to grab your food from the case (eternity of you're waiting for something cooked), charge it, etc. Food: Sub-par at best. Overpriced meals. However, I'll give credit where it's due...the hot chocolate on cold nights hits the spot. Facility: I've never been inside, but I cam see the dust and grime caked ceiling fan in the kitchen from the outside counter. The corner facing 61st Ave smells horrific. Not inviting at all. In fact, it screams "food poisoning". There are too many good places to get Cuban food in this city. Don't waste your money here.

If all the late night Cuban spots are closed (La Carreta, Sergio's, etc.) this place is a sure bet to get your fix. They are most famous for their churros and hot chocolate, especially on those two or three days where it gets below 70 in Miami. If you go on one of those days, prepare to either wait in line, or be ignored by a server unless you get really aggressive. On those non-cold days, you could get decent service from the outdoor cafe servers, but getting waited on a table and such is total overkill. Especially on late nights during the weekend. Out of the four times I've been in the past few months and decided to actually sit down, three of those times the waitress disappeared for a good while between visits to our table. Get ready to flag them down with a look and a wave, because it gets so packed on Friday and Saturday nights, that they have only about two or three waitresses running the entire inside of the restaurant. So the service is a mess, you might have to get in their faces about it. The food on the other hand, is not that bad. The pan con bistec (steak sandwich) has never let me down, the meat is always nice and the bread crunchy. Their churros are pretty good, but make sure they put them in a brown bag, instead of the cheap plastic tray with sugar dumped on top. You need to have that good old brown bag, full of grease spots, with the sugar dancing around inside. Shake it up! I have friends who swear by the coffee at this place, and one buddy of mine loves their Cuban sandwich with a twist (that he came up with). Strawberry jelly on the side. Some say that's an Elena Ruth. He begs to differ.

Please take note, this review is for La Palma's churros & chocolate only. I have yet to actually go inside this La Palma and actually order some real food. That being said, allow me to tell you about Miami's best 'drinking' chocolate. Yes, I call what they serve at La Palma drinking chocolate as their elixir of life transcends that of hot chocolate status and is indeed drinking chocolate. What is drinking chocolate you ask? Simple, imagine you have a chocolate bar. Now imagine someone melted said bar into a cup. Now drink that. Now you know what drinking chocolate is and La Palma is where to find it. However, proceed with caution. La Palma's drinking chocolate is not for the weak of heart. You must not only like chocolate, you must love it and if you do, then YOU WILL LOVE THIS DRINK. La Palma serves their drink in 3 sizes, however the small is plenty....trust me. Make sure get an order of churros with your drink so that you can consume their churros y chocolate in 4 easy steps: 1. Dip churro 2. Eat churro 3. Drink chocolate 4. Repeat Though, to be perfectly honest, their churros aren't tops. One night when my date and I went there we were quite dismayed to find that their churros were frozen and are not handmade. They also serve their churros with WAY too much sugar. Yes, I said it, too much sugar. My date and I both agree that next time we come here, we will ask for the churros without sugar, I mean, hell, you're going to dip them into the drinking chocolate anyways, right? And that's plenty sweet. I feel like the churros they used to sell on the streets were better than La Palma's. Regardless, their churro and chocolate combo is perfect for those rare chilly nights in Miami or when you must simply have a chocolate fix.

really a 3.5 this place is very miami and by that i mean very cuban. its your typical cuban restaurant, think la carreta meets palacio de los jugos. the waitresses are bound to call you "mi amor, mi vida, mijita, etc" they are most well known for the churros, you can get them at the ventanita or inside the restaurant. when its cold, this place gets packed, at any hour of the day you will find a bunch of ppl dipping their churros into the "chocolate" -- that was in spanish by the way, in english, just hot chocolate. but this isnt your usual usual hot chocolate, its thick and creamy. i mean thick, like almost undrinkable. they have all the other regular cuban staples to order. the croquetas are notably good. i havent been since last "winter", lol. but am really looking fwd to a visit soon!!

La Palma turned out to be just what I needed in the wee hours after flying into Miami from the West Coast. Traditional, simple Cuban dishes, well-prepared and very tasty, at reasonable prices. I can't say that the service was excellent, but I do know that I entered the place pretty hungry, left the place really full, didn't spend too awfully much time or money in there, and was pleased enough by the experience to plan to repeat it again soon. People watching was above average as well!! (Next time, I will have to try the churros!)

I may be hated for this review. La Palma is known to many as having the best Chocolate con churros in Miami. People stand in line in the freezng cold to get their hands on this. Although I must admit I have done this as well I don't believe they are that great! Honestly people if you want a good hot chocolate go to public get a bar of chocolate, carve it up and pour it in hot milk. It's delicious!

This isn't a 24 hours sit-in indoor restaurant, but it's window is open for business for 24 hours. But this place isn't really known for having the best Cuban food - it probably is standard, although I can't vouch it since I didn't come here for Cuban food. What this place is known for, however, are the churros. Churros are Latin American "doughnuts" in which you can dunk into a hot chocolate, coffee, or whatever of your liking. They basically are dough sticks covered in sugar. The Cuban churros are of the type found in the Caribbean and South America - they're doughy, soft in the center and crispy on the outside. That's vastly different (and in my opinion, superior) from the Mexican style churros which tend to be crispy and dry all over, inside and out. The churros at La Palma is often considered as the best in Miami. And thankfully you can easily get them at any hour of the day or night. It's also a great place to chat with friends over churros and coffee in a casual setting. Roughtly, the long churros cost $1.60 for 4, if I'm right, but no more than that. The hot chocolate costs 75 cents. Very affordable and worth the deal if you have a sweet tooth needing a quick fix. INTERESTING SIDE NOTE: This is the only Cuban restaurant I've witnessed that has a sign up on all of its doors saying that they don't use Trans Fat.

If you want to satisfy for hunger at 3 am after a night of drinking this is the place to be (only if you are too lazy to drive to Sergios or La Carreta) Their service at this time sucks since the staff is worn out and are dying to leave specially after dealing with a bunch of drunks or the herd of old people coming from the Cascada nightclub. Overall the food is not bad but could be better. the Elena Ruth used to be huge full of Strawberry marmalade and packed with cream cheese and turkey, not anymore.

Yelpers, this is also a Churro & Chocolate ONLY review... A friend of mine had been ranting and raving about this place for weeks, so I finally decided to try it out for myself. It was actually during a few weeks back on Saturday when it was freezing for Miami standards... aka 40 degrees oustide. 2 friends and I went to this establishment and decided to get a table indoors as it was raining outside and have some churros and chocolate to cure the chills. The service was good, our order was taken quickly and the food was served in just one moment. However, the churros and chocolate were a bit below expectations. The churros were served warm, but not hoooooot. I like them steamin usually so that the sugar melts on them. That was already kind of a disappointment, but then came the chocolate. It was sooooooo rich and thick, I wasn't sure whether I should eat it or drink it. It tasted great, but I think it should have been a little less rich and maybe then I could have finished even half of it. All in all, the churros and chocolate were good, but not great. I may come back here another day for food, but I'm not sure I'll be recommending La Palma for late-night churros and chocolate.

To me, this is more of a fun, "only in Miami" people-watching spot than a place to enjoy quality food. But, its open 24 hours (translation: good for drunk munchies) and most locals know of it as *the* place to get churros on a chilly night. Most also know that the churros here can only be accompanied (and dunked, of course) in this restaurant's version of hot chocolate, which, to be honest is more like a melted Hershey's bar rather than warmed milk flavored with cocoa. But who cares, consuming calories with reckless abandon is part of the fun at La Palm's (again, I must stress, it's more enjoyable when your drunk). I used to really like the ham croquettes here, but I tried them recently and was slightly disappointed. Stay away, altogether, from the fish croquettes. Not good. At all. Also, if you plan to make a visit to La Palma and don't speak Spanish, make sure to bring someone who does - it'll definitely enhance the experience. Oh, and it's not you, the girls who work the counter are always grumpy.

I can't give ZERO stars, otherwise I would. I will never go to this place again. Been twice. The absolute WORST service I have ever seen. Maybe it's because I don't speak Spanish or maybe it isn't. But twice already I have stood at the window waiting to order only to have the little 'citas walk right by me in favor of others standing at the window. I asked if I could order and was given the "uno momento" mumble while she took care of the others who arrived after me then mumbled some things to her waitress friend while gesturing towards me. The first time I was here I had the churros. Yeah, they were okay. But I think the oil was old as they had an off-taste. Didn't want to complain because it wouldn't have done me much good. You can have your stinkin' churro fried bread. There's better comfort food after a cold front anyway. I'm so over this town!! By the way, we were coming from Caffe Italiana, which was great. I'll review later when I get over my absolute disdain for the overrated Las Palmas piece of crap.

The churros at La Palma is often considered as the best in Miami. And thankfully you can easily get them at any hour of the day or night. It's also a great place to chat with friends over churros and coffee in a casual setting. Roughtly, the long churros cost $1.60 for 4, if I'm right, but no more than that. The hot chocolate costs 75 cents. Very affordable and worth the deal if you have a sweet tooth needing a quick fix. INTERESTING SIDE NOTE: This is the only Cuban restaurant I've witnessed that has a sign up on all of its doors saying that they don't use Trans Fat.

If you want to satisfy for hunger at 3 am after a night of drinking this is the place to be (only if you are too lazy to drive to Sergios or La Carreta) Their service at this time sucks since the staff is worn out and are dying to leave specially after dealing with a bunch of drunks or the herd of old people coming from the Cascada nightclub. Overall the food is not bad but could be better. the Elena Ruth used to be huge full of Strawberry marmalade and packed with cream cheese and turkey, not anymore.

Yelpers, this is also a Churro & Chocolate ONLY review... A friend of mine had been ranting and raving about this place for weeks, so I finally decided to try it out for myself. It was actually during a few weeks back on Saturday when it was freezing for Miami standards... aka 40 degrees oustide. 2 friends and I went to this establishment and decided to get a table indoors as it was raining outside and have some churros and chocolate to cure the chills. The service was good, our order was taken quickly and the food was served in just one moment. However, the churros and chocolate were a bit below expectations. The churros were served warm, but not hoooooot. I like them steamin usually so that the sugar melts on them. That was already kind of a disappointment, but then came the chocolate. It was sooooooo rich and thick, I wasn't sure whether I should eat it or drink it. It tasted great, but I think it should have been a little less rich and maybe then I could have finished even half of it. All in all, the churros and chocolate were good, but not great. I may come back here another day for food, but I'm not sure I'll be recommending La Palma for late-night churros and chocolate.

To me, this is more of a fun, "only in Miami" people-watching spot than a place to enjoy quality food. But, its open 24 hours (translation: good for drunk munchies) and most locals know of it as *the* place to get churros on a chilly night. Most also know that the churros here can only be accompanied (and dunked, of course) in this restaurant's version of hot chocolate, which, to be honest is more like a melted Hershey's bar rather than warmed milk flavored with cocoa. But who cares, consuming calories with reckless abandon is part of the fun at La Palm's (again, I must stress, it's more enjoyable when your drunk). I used to really like the ham croquettes here, but I tried them recently and was slightly disappointed. Stay away, altogether, from the fish croquettes. Not good. At all. Also, if you plan to make a visit to La Palma and don't speak Spanish, make sure to bring someone who does - it'll definitely enhance the experience. Oh, and it's not you, the girls who work the counter are always grumpy.

Prepare to be ignored by the staff, especially on not so busy nights, and if you end up ordering, prepare to wait a super long time to get that food. The food is pretty good here, one of the best vaca fritas in all of Miami. So if you get to order, you will like it, but it is not worth the wait.

WARNING! Churro-only review: Went last week as part of the ongoing ChurroQuest 2010, turned away once by the extremely long line, then re-girded our loins for a second try, waiting in line for about 15 minutes in the cold. Way not worth it. I saw the Churro extruder discussed below, but they were using frozen Churros from a box, and furiously slamming them out, bags at a time over the counter. The ones we had were tasteless, wallpaper-pasty oil slick-sticks. Even my kids refused them, and they'll eat dirt if you put sugar on it. Maybe the volume forces them to use the frozen matter; quality regardless, it's like this place is printing money, as the line stretches on forever. Do yourself a favor and slide over to Morro Castle (where they make 'em fresh), or a local Churromania. REVISION: My wife is demanding I drop them to a One Star. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do to keep the peace...

I can't give ZERO stars, otherwise I would. I will never go to this place again. Been twice. The absolute WORST service I have ever seen. Maybe it's because I don't speak Spanish or maybe it isn't. But twice already I have stood at the window waiting to order only to have the little 'citas walk right by me in favor of others standing at the window. I asked if I could order and was given the "uno momento" mumble while she took care of the others who arrived after me then mumbled some things to her waitress friend while gesturing towards me. The first time I was here I had the churros. Yeah, they were okay. But I think the oil was old as they had an off-taste. Didn't want to complain because it wouldn't have done me much good. You can have your stinkin' churro fried bread. There's better comfort food after a cold front anyway. I'm so over this town!! By the way, we were coming from Caffe Italiana, which was great. I'll review later when I get over my absolute disdain for the overrated Las Palmas piece of crap.

For hot chocolate that sticks to your gut and skinny churros that are coated with lots of sugar.... 4 stars. I didn't try anything else and probably never will. I came here for the above and I'll be back for the above until someone tells me I'm missing out on anything else. The churros have a lovely crunch and do not wimp out when they cool down. Dip these in your thick, rich hot chocolate then sip the chocolate at you chew your churros. YUM. I came here on a Tuesday night after 10:30pm and the line was totally short. Still, I was at the window for over 7 minutes waiting for 3 medium hot chocolates and a cafe con leche. 20/20 hind sight, a small hot chocolate would have been plenty for me. I saved my medium chocolate in the refrigerator to see what it'll be like in the morning.

My Spanish is terrible, but the staff here are always kind about the way I mangle a perfectly good language. And the prices can't be beat, especially if you're used to Starbucks. I've only been to the counter, and then only for takeout. Usually we come here for churros (4 for about $2), sticks of freshly fried dough, grooved so they hold more of the cinnamon sugar inside the brown paper sack. Occasionally we'll get some drinks too. Hot chocolate (about $2) is rich and creamy, and thick enough for dipping the churros into, which is kind of the whole point. You can also get Cuban ritalin for a buck or two. They call it una colada, which is Cuban coffee in a small-but-not-tiny cup. It comes with a stack of tiny plastic shot glasses so that you can share it with several friends or coworkers. If you want a rush, though, drink the whole thing yourself. Drink more than two coladas by yourself and you may as well get Ralph Steadman to illustrate your biography, because you will be well and truly in bat country. I briefly considered holding back one star because the parking lot is amazingly tiny, but relented when I realized that a place like this would fill up a ten-story parking garage if there were enough spaces for all its fans. Come here and you'll see why.

I grew up right next this place and still live on the same block. So close in fact, I can smell the days-old grease from my front yard. However, I only go if a friend drags me along. Even drunk me stays away from this place. Service: Beyond rude. If you don't speak Spanish (or in my case, look like you don't speak Spanish) you will be ignored. A friend dragged me along with her and it took her twenty minutes for croquetas. The greeting you get when the "ladies" finally acknowledge you is pretty much "What do you want?" It then takes forever for them to grab your food from the case (eternity of you're waiting for something cooked), charge it, etc. Food: Sub-par at best. Overpriced meals. However, I'll give credit where it's due...the hot chocolate on cold nights hits the spot. Facility: I've never been inside, but I cam see the dust and grime caked ceiling fan in the kitchen from the outside counter. The corner facing 61st Ave smells horrific. Not inviting at all. In fact, it screams "food poisoning". There are too many good places to get Cuban food in this city. Don't waste your money here.

If you want to be hung up on repeatedly for a pick up order this is the place to call!! I use to love coming here but lately THE STAFF is horrible. I called for a pick-up order no joke like five times. They would pick up the phone and hung up that is great customer service let me tell you. When I got there to pick up my order the girls were super rude and on top of it all they had no idea where my order was. I got furious spoke to the manager which really seemed to not care at all. I think they need a reliable staff and better management. They food may be good but replaceable. They are tons of other Latin restaurants around that cook just as good and cheap. I may be hated for this review. La Palma is known to many as having the best Chocolate con churros in Miami. People stand in line in the freezng cold to get their hands on this. Although I must admit I have done this as well I don't believe they are that great! Honestly people if you want a good hot chocolate go to public get a bar of chocolate, carve it up and pour it in hot milk. It's delicious!

This review is only for the hot chocolate and churros as we stopped by for a hot snack on Saturday to warm up after a cold night of food trucks! Lol. The wait was about 20 minutes but in their defense we were 9. The place is clean inside. Service was decent, I had to ask for a straw for water about 3 times until someone finally brought it. They were really busy so I'm not going to dock them 2 stars for that. As for the hot chocolate it was delicious great flavor but cold. Churros were really good and the warm bread they serve with butter was delicious. The only reason they did not get 5 stars was bc the hot chocolate was not hot and the ok service. I will try them again bf totally going yelp crazy on them for service and cold hot chocolate. Try them out, flavors were definitely good. Ps I prefer thinner hot chocolate not totally liquid but not pudding like, like theirs. It's a preference but still tasted really good!

We were looking for some authentic Spanish style churros con chocolate and as two Spaniards I can tell you we were impressed! The best churros con chocolate I have ever had: fresh, crispy, delicious and what about the chocolate? Deep, dense, smooth and creamy, pure perfection! We liked it so much that we went back a few hours later for lunch and got chicken salad with croquetas (amazing), ropa vieja and fresh fish filet on the grill: both came with rice and fried plantains. We also asked for beans in the side. Overall an extremely pleasant experience. Ah and did I say it already: the best churros ever!!!!

The walk up window is always an adventure....but the inside dining area is always clean good to come at lunch time or for an early dinner. 5pm to 8pm. La Palma is a very known place in Miami. This is a place for locals. This would be what I would try to find if I were an out of towner. La Palma has been opened since 1979, that's a remarkable reputation. Years of layer upon layer of great food and affordable prices. Their variety is great, you have items on the menu that can take you back to childhood like discos or flying saucers. If it is those 3 to 4 days in the year where the temperature drops in Miami, this place is packed for the very known churros and hot chocolate. I just wish I live closer, plus they are open 24 hours with plenty of parking. I have been a customer for at least 15 years and family members from other states do remember this place for their millanesa steaks. Service is awesome, love the staff and this place. Wouldn't get tired of coming. Had an incredible meal today for only $8.95 Can't wait to comeback.

I definetly have to say that it looks better on the inside than what it does on the outside. They have a painting on the wall where they have drawings of different cuban singers. I found that fascinating. Their tables and chairs looked new and well taken care of, even though this place is not so new. A plus, is that they have their own parking lot which seems to be plentiful for their guests. As soon as I walked in, I wasn't greeted by anyone and the waitress was busy talking to another client (who she seemed to be really close with, because she kissed that clients adolescent son on the cheek). It took her about 10 min to finally come to our table and ask for our order. I ordered una croqueta preparada and so did my bf. My order took longer than usual to make. There were people who arrived and ordered after us, and they received their meal before us. Let me remind you that I ordered a sandwich, not a full plate of food. The waitress herself seemed very nice, but not as attentive because she was busy occupying herself with social matters. The food itself was delicious. They serve the sandwich cut in half, and I was only able to eat half. The other half I took home. The cafe con leche was excellent. I'm not sure what type of milk they use, or what coffee, but that was my favorite part of the meal. The reason for the 3 stars and not 5, is because the waitress wasn't as attentive as she should have been. However, the food was very good and was of good quality.

I've been coming here my entire life. My personal favorite croquetas and the big empanadas de carne! When it's cold myself along with everyone else in Miami lines up for churros and chocolate caliente. The sit down restaurant portion is also very good. There's specials everyday. Soap de platano is yummy and so are the garbanzos. Typical Cuban cuisine. Some of the ladies that work there have been there as long as I can remember. Warning: late night/early morning it's great on the way home from partying to stop in for some munchies to sober up and a colada to wake up. Just know all the crazies from near by motels and brothels seem to patron there around those hours.

Since they're "The Best Hot Chocolate and Churros" in Miami and it's been cold, I decided to check out all the hype. There was a ridiculously long line to order some for take out but my boyfriend went inside and sweet talked a waiter to give us a table just for Churros anyway (kind of how things work in a Cuban restaurant). Service was slow - As in 40 minutes to get the Churros and chocolate and another 40 to to get the check after we were done eating. I can understand they were packed and didn't mind waiting for the food, but the check?! I was trying to pay you! As far as the Churros go - the dough was good, perfect amount of crisp, you could tell it was fresh oil. They're just topped with cups of sugar so really lack flavor if you don't dip them in the chocolate. The hot chocolate was extremely thick, creamy, chocolately, and not too sweet. I'm pretty sure if I let it set it could become a pudding. Overall, it's not worth making lines. I'd go again but with cinnamon in my purse!

I've only come here for the late night churros and hot chocolate. Yes, it gets packed! but with good reason. The churros are crisped to perfection and they give you a good amount. The hot chocolate is super thick, like chocolate fountain thick but is not overwhelmingly sweet so is the perfect combination for your sugary churros.

A 24 hour non pretentious Latin place that serves us classic favorites for reasonable prices? Sign me up! This is not a place is you're looking to be swooned by fancy and creative food. Nor to stare at the amazing decor. This really is like going to eat at Abuelas house. I tried the split pea soup which was absolutely delicious! It had chunks of chorizo and a smooth and creamy texture that left me wanting more. And the cup is seriously as big as a bowl ! As my main course, I had a Cuban steak sandwich. It was pretty good. The steak was soft and not chewy. It could have used more seasoning, but it was still pretty darn tasty. The service was fast and the tables clean. All In all, I will return. It's easy to enjoy a place when you feel right at home.

parents came here last year, said churros and hot chocolate were not that good but decided to return this year with me we actually stopped by Versailles first to a packed house with 3 news crews there; we didnt see signs of churros or hot chocolate so we came to La Palma overall, the place is a dump.. but luckily they fried the churros fresh and made the hot chocolate fresh churros were okay, crisp and came in an order of 4 but they are pre frozen so just dont taste good or cooked good they give it to you in a brown paper bag and about 3 cups of sugar poured in the hot chocolate though was pretty good; definitely the 2 stars for the review not too thick not too sweet nice and chocolatey would i return? nah

I'm really upset with this place. Picking up food? CHECK YOUR FOOD, PPL! They offered me no solution or even refund on food that was clearly untouched. I ordered over the phone one dish and they gave me something totally different. I called them as soon as the food arrived to my house and the lady who worked last night said if you bring it back I'll give you a new one. After waiting a few hours for food the last thing you want is to have to go back..well, I went back! Only to have the "manager" ( with pastellito crumbs all over her face) tell me that I got what I ordered. Que que! No! She didn't even so much as offer to the replace the rice which the girl who took the order over the phone admitted was wrong! The manager screamed at me in front of everyone there and humiliated me. Apparently, time stands still here. In the many years I have been eating here, not much has changed. Your typical Cuban fare is the focus of the menu. You won't be surprised and the prices are actually quite reasonable. Breakfast is good and the portions are plentiful. If you like the "Bistec a Caballo" then this is right up your alley. I will say the service was a bit lacking, but it may have been how busy they were on this day. Here's a survival tip..... pay with your credit card, leave the tip in cash. The waitresses will love you.

We just stopped in for Churros . We were craving something sweet and our first choice was closed. You get standard Miami service here, so don't expect much more. How can I put this into words? This place is the bomb underground late night spot. Open 24/7, La Palma has me getting my pan con bistec and coquetas at all sorts of crazy hours in the morning. The only thing on my mind were the yummy fat, tasty croquetas that I was so used to eating during one of my sudden late-night pregnancy cravings, but I was sadly disappointed! Gone was the outrageous size & distinct taste. In its place was a smaller much greasier version which didn't taste the same. My croqueta preparada sandwich was OK and I quickly understood the reason why. I should have tested a croqueta at the restaurant and avoided paying for the sandwich but I didn't think about it. Lesson learned! Hubby was starving after coming back from a procedure which put him on a liquid diet for an entire day so he told me his steak sandwich was great. I've tasted some amazing pan con bistec and this one was good but nothing over the top! Poor thing. He was probably delirious from the lack of food in his tummy...LOL! I couldn't resist & also ordered two guava empanadas and they were pretty good but I guess I'm spoiled with my mothers homemade ones that have an overload of gooey guava. There was a lot more fried dough than guava. But nonetheless, they were good. So this actually helped the 3 star that I gave them, as well as the excellent customer service from a very friendly and attentive blonde middle aged lady!

First chilly night in South Florida after a wonderful dinner our friends told us we must experience this tradition of going for Churro's and Chocolate. So as much as I love Churro's I was on board. We pull up and there is a line wrapped around the building. My first thought is really? We are seriously going to stand in line for Churro's. ha ha The wonderful men we had were gentleman and gave us their jackets to keep us warm. Yes the wind was quite chilly. I can not begin to tell you how long we stood in line but did not matter, conversation was great and it was fun watching this whole assembly line of staff making these delicious treats. We finally get to order and we grab a table outside on the patio. We ordered twelve Churro's for all to share and hubby decided to get a medium Chocolate. The churro's were hot, very crunchy, great flavor and loads and loads of sugar. They were not the best Churro's I have ever had. More than anything it was the awesome company and the experience. When my friend's said Hot Chocolate, that is exactly what I was thinking. Oh no this hot chocolate was steaming hot, and thick, like a pudding almost. We dipped our Churro's in the chocolate, thank goodness it was way to rich for me. Hubby decides to drink it, oh my all I could think of is glad he has his own bathroom. LOL I do not know what time they are open until. It was late and they still had a line as long as your eye's could see. Much thanks to our wonderful friends for bringing us here and introducing us to this fun place. What a wonderful ending to a fantastic evening. Now I know where to go when it is late and I need my Churro fix.

As a traveling sales man, this was always one of my must stops for coffee, tostada and good conversations with my sales team before we dispersed to make things happen in the Magic City. Now that I don't travel as much, I do go by on my morning commute, and for all times sakes, we sometimes convene here again to catch up on our newest enterprises. I find the place refreshingly relaxed, basic good food and informal and warm service. It is vintage Miami, what is not to like ?

What is all the hype? I remember coming to this joint back in 1989 as a child. Boy, were those churros great. I could hardly reach over the counter where all the candies were strategically placed to taunt me. lol :) But those days are long gone. What is all the hype still? Went there not too long ago, stood in a crazy line, only to get mediocre churros. Not the best. And I ordered some croquettas that were not that good either. I don't know why I used to come here as a child, but I suppose this place was once the shizness. Those days are long gone! Not worth the long wait and standing halfway out 8th street. Sorry La Palma.

LOVED their churros, hot chocolate- not so much. It was very thick and very chocolate-y which isn't a bad thing.. just not my taste for hot chocolate. Their churros are fresh and worth the wait! They put a whole lotta sugar on them and are very tasty! Some of the staff moves quickly to get your order but others are just a tad slow but that's sort of to expect when you eat at Latin American restaurants!

I've been going to La Palma since I was a kid....mostly for the churros (I think they were $1 for a bag of 10 then) but also for the infamous "Disco Volador" (flying saucer sandwiches). A few nights ago, it was after 10pm and I was absolutely starving. It was too late for for delivery. Luckily I remembered about La Palma & that they are open 24 hours so I quickly made my way over there. I ordered a Guarapo (The menu said $3.19 but they charged me $2.75), a Disco Volador w/ ham, cheese, & chorizo ($3.99) and a Frita ($3.69). I was sharing....I swear ;) LoL My Disco Volador was good, but they didn't cut off the crust like they used to. The churros were crunchy and sweet.... & loaded with sugar. The guarapo was refreshing but I wish it were cheaper....I could drink it by the gallon! I'm not sure what happened when Robert was there but they were making fresh batches of churros for other customers while I waited for my food. The same old machine that was there when I used to go as kid was still being used. They pull down on the giant metal wheel to force the batter out, then grab the churro (with their hands....) to break it off and drop it into the fryer. They also fried up a bunch of those giant elephant-ear-looking guava empanadas while I was there.....yum! I must point out that Frita was not my favorite. It was alright but not like El Mago's. It had wayy to much paprika and cumin (?) and I'm certain this was a pre-made patty or something. I have to say that although this place is really dirty and could use several hours......make that days.....of elbow grease their food is really good and they're open around the clock. They are always packed whenever I drive by which means they must be doing something right.

You see a familiar food stand that has been around for ages. stop here. walk up to counter- order tostada, 2 croquetas and a batido de trigo ( or mamey, whatever your preference) . Or Materva if perhaps you're lactose intolerant ( you know who you are) consume. plunk down your 5-6 bucks and go on your merry way.

La Palma is a very known place in Miami. This is a place for locals. This would be what I would try to find if I were an out of towner. La Palma has been opened since 1979, that's a remarkable reputation. Years of layer upon layer of great food and affordable prices. Their variety is great, you have items on the menu that can take you back to childhood like discos or flying saucers. If it is those 3 to 4 days in the year where the temperature drops in Miami, this place is packed for the very known churros and hot chocolate. I just wish I live closer, plus they are open 24 hours with plenty of parking. I have been a customer for at least 15 years and family members from other states do remember this place for their millanesa steaks. Service is awesome, love the staff and this place. Wouldn't get tired of coming. Had an incredible meal today for only $8.95 Can't wait to comeback.

I definetly have to say that it looks better on the inside than what it does on the outside. They have a painting on the wall where they have drawings of different cuban singers. I found that fascinating. Their tables and chairs looked new and well taken care of, even though this place is not so new. A plus, is that they have their own parking lot which seems to be plentiful for their guests. As soon as I walked in, I wasn't greeted by anyone and the waitress was busy talking to another client (who she seemed to be really close with, because she kissed that clients adolescent son on the cheek). It took her about 10 min to finally come to our table and ask for our order. I ordered una croqueta preparada and so did my bf. My order took longer than usual to make. There were people who arrived and ordered after us, and they received their meal before us. Let me remind you that I ordered a sandwich, not a full plate of food. The waitress herself seemed very nice, but not as attentive because she was busy occupying herself with social matters. The food itself was delicious. They serve the sandwich cut in half, and I was only able to eat half. The other half I took home. The cafe con leche was excellent. I'm not sure what type of milk they use, or what coffee, but that was my favorite part of the meal. The reason for the 3 stars and not 5, is because the waitress wasn't as attentive as she should have been. However, the food was very good and was of good quality.

I've been coming here my entire life. My personal favorite croquetas and the big empanadas de carne! When it's cold myself along with everyone else in Miami lines up for churros and chocolate caliente. The sit down restaurant portion is also very good. There's specials everyday. Soap de platano is yummy and so are the garbanzos. Typical Cuban cuisine. Some of the ladies that work there have been there as long as I can remember. Warning: late night/early morning it's great on the way home from partying to stop in for some munchies to sober up and a colada to wake up. Just know all the crazies from near by motels and brothels seem to patron there around those hours.

Since they're "The Best Hot Chocolate and Churros" in Miami and it's been cold, I decided to check out all the hype. There was a ridiculously long line to order some for take out but my boyfriend went inside and sweet talked a waiter to give us a table just for Churros anyway (kind of how things work in a Cuban restaurant). Service was slow - As in 40 minutes to get the Churros and chocolate and another 40 to to get the check after we were done eating. I can understand they were packed and didn't mind waiting for the food, but the check?! I was trying to pay you! As far as the Churros go - the dough was good, perfect amount of crisp, you could tell it was fresh oil. They're just topped with cups of sugar so really lack flavor if you don't dip them in the chocolate. The hot chocolate was extremely thick, creamy, chocolately, and not too sweet. I'm pretty sure if I let it set it could become a pudding. Overall, it's not worth making lines. I'd go again but with cinnamon in my purse!

La Palma is another of the old school Cuban restaurants that makes Miami the wonderful culinary and cultural melting pot that it is. If you're looking for swanky haute cuisines, then don't come here. If you're looking to eat like a local, good Cuban food, hefty portions that won't break the bank, then this is the spot! I have only been here a few times but it's always been great service, friendly staff, FANTASTIC cafecitos! For those movie buffs out there: this is the spot where that scene in "Scarface" was filmed. No joke. So walk up to the ventana and order yourself a colada...then channel your inner Tony Montana. :)

I've only come here for the late night churros and hot chocolate. Yes, it gets packed! but with good reason. The churros are crisped to perfection and they give you a good amount. The hot chocolate is super thick, like chocolate fountain thick but is not overwhelmingly sweet so is the perfect combination for your sugary churros.

A 24 hour non pretentious Latin place that serves us classic favorites for reasonable prices? Sign me up! This is not a place is you're looking to be swooned by fancy and creative food. Nor to stare at the amazing decor. This really is like going to eat at Abuelas house. I tried the split pea soup which was absolutely delicious! It had chunks of chorizo and a smooth and creamy texture that left me wanting more. And the cup is seriously as big as a bowl ! As my main course, I had a Cuban steak sandwich. It was pretty good. The steak was soft and not chewy. It could have used more seasoning, but it was still pretty darn tasty. The service was fast and the tables clean. All In all, I will return. It's easy to enjoy a place when you feel right at home.

Super bad service. After 20 min i have to het up to get the menu and water. Only one waiter for the tables and other ine behind the counter, doing anything. I have to ask for the napkins they didn't put any on my table. In top, when I'm paying the waiter tell me that she is tire of walking ti my table. We just stopped in for Churros . We were craving something sweet and our first choice was closed. You get standard Miami service here, so don't expect much more. The Churros were served hot, tasty and with plenty of sugar. Remember to give the bag a couple of good shakes to coat them up really good. The Churros were good, just not amazing. How can you get amazing Churros you ask? It's just fried batter & sugar. Well, I don't know what the secret is, but we always have the best Churros on the planet in Spain. And yes, I will forever compare all Churros to those!

How can I put this into words? This place is the bomb underground late night spot. Open 24/7, La Palma has me getting my pan con bistec and coquetas at all sorts of crazy hours in the morning. Their coffee and churros also come highly recommended. I usually just take my stuff to go since I live in the Gables making this place so clutch. Very nice change from late night McDonald's.

WARNING! Churro-only review: Went last week as part of the ongoing ChurroQuest 2010, turned away once by the extremely long line, then re-girded our loins for a second try, waiting in line for about 15 minutes in the cold. Way not worth it. I saw the Churro extruder discussed below, but they were using frozen Churros from a box, and furiously slamming them out, bags at a time over the counter. The ones we had were tasteless, wallpaper-pasty oil slick-sticks. Even my kids refused them, and they'll eat dirt if you put sugar on it. Maybe the volume forces them to use the frozen matter; quality regardless, it's like this place is printing money, as the line stretches on forever. Do yourself a favor and slide over to Morro Castle (where they make 'em fresh), or a local Churromania. REVISION: My wife is demanding I drop them to a One Star. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do to keep the peace...

I loved this place!!! I'll definitely be back when I go back to Miami. I'm super picky with Cuban food being Cuban I expect authentic. After visiting this place I can say it's the best in Miami! I went to Versailles and was super disappointed with there food and service. At La Palma our waitress was attentive and sweet. The food was amazing!!! The bread... maduros....vaca frita....fufu de platano...Churros... Hot chocalate and batidos. Everything!!! Don't miss this spot when your in Miami!!

I'm really upset with this place. Picking up food? CHECK YOUR FOOD, PPL! They offered me no solution or even refund on food that was clearly untouched. I ordered over the phone one dish and they gave me something totally different. I called them as soon as the food arrived to my house and the lady who worked last night said if you bring it back I'll give you a new one. After waiting a few hours for food the last thing you want is to have to go back..well, I went back! Only to have the "manager" ( with pastellito crumbs all over her face) tell me that I got what I ordered. Que que! No! She didn't even so much as offer to the replace the rice which the girl who took the order over the phone admitted was wrong! The manager screamed at me in front of everyone there and humiliated me. I was so insulted by the whole thing i left the food on the counter. Zero costumer service and class.

Apparently, time stands still here. In the many years I have been eating here, not much has changed. Your typical Cuban fare is the focus of the menu. You won't be surprised and the prices are actually quite reasonable. Breakfast is good and the portions are plentiful. If you like the "Bistec a Caballo" then this is right up your alley. I will say the service was a bit lacking, but it may have been how busy they were on this day. Here's a survival tip..... pay with your credit card, leave the tip in cash. The waitresses will love you.

La Palma is always solid....cheap, good, with great service. No matter what time you go. The walk up window is always an adventure....but the inside dining area is always clean good to come at lunch time or for an early dinner. 5pm to 8pm. The weekend late night crowd is quite an adventure...the people watching is incredible. Show begins at 1:30 am til 5 am.

parents came here last year, said churros and hot chocolate were not that good but decided to return this year with me we actually stopped by Versailles first to a packed house with 3 news crews there; we didnt see signs of churros or hot chocolate so we came to La Palma overall, the place is a dump.. but luckily they fried the churros fresh and made the hot chocolate fresh churros were okay, crisp and came in an order of 4 but they are pre frozen so just dont taste good or cooked good they give it to you in a brown paper bag and about 3 cups of sugar poured in the hot chocolate though was pretty good; definitely the 2 stars for the review not too thick not too sweet nice and chocolatey would i return? nah

This is the go to place in all of Miami for churros and hot chocolate when the temps drop. You will see a long line outside of Miamians braving the chilly weather just for the churros. Worth it? I would say if you are craving it do it, if not you can really skip this place all together. There is much better Cuban food to be had in Miami.

The waitresses make you feel at home and the food is pretty good. Only negative thing I have to say is that the booths and floors under the tables need to be cleaned. If you drop something, yuck! Just leave it there. And the booths? There's bread and who knows what on the insides of the openings.

The only thing on my mind were the yummy fat, tasty croquetas that I was so used to eating during one of my sudden late-night pregnancy cravings, but I was sadly disappointed! Gone was the outrageous size & distinct taste. In its place was a smaller much greasier version which didn't taste the same. My croqueta preparada sandwich was OK and I quickly understood the reason why. I should have tested a croqueta at the restaurant and avoided paying for the sandwich but I didn't think about it. Lesson learned! Hubby was starving after coming back from a procedure which put him on a liquid diet for an entire day so he told me his steak sandwich was great. I've tasted some amazing pan con bistec and this one was good but nothing over the top! Poor thing. He was probably delirious from the lack of food in his tummy...LOL! I couldn't resist & also ordered two guava empanadas and they were pretty good but I guess I'm spoiled with my mothers homemade ones that have an overload of gooey guava. There was a lot more fried dough than guava. But nonetheless, they were good. So this actually helped the 3 star that I gave them, as well as the excellent customer service from a very friendly and attentive blonde middle aged lady!

This review is only for the hot chocolate and churros as we stopped by for a hot snack on Saturday to warm up after a cold night of food trucks! Lol. The wait was about 20 minutes but in their defense we were 9. The place is clean inside. Service was decent, I had to ask for a straw for water about 3 times until someone finally brought it. They were really busy so I'm not going to dock them 2 stars for that. As for the hot chocolate it was delicious great flavor but cold. Churros were really good and the warm bread they serve with butter was delicious. The only reason they did not get 5 stars was bc the hot chocolate was not hot and the ok service. I will try them again bf totally going yelp crazy on them for service and cold hot chocolate. Try them out, flavors were definitely good. Ps I prefer thinner hot chocolate not totally liquid but not pudding like, like theirs. It's a preference but still tasted really good!

We were looking for some authentic Spanish style churros con chocolate and as two Spaniards I can tell you we were impressed! The best churros con chocolate I have ever had: fresh, crispy, delicious and what about the chocolate? Deep, dense, smooth and creamy, pure perfection! We liked it so much that we went back a few hours later for lunch and got chicken salad with croquetas (amazing), ropa vieja and fresh fish filet on the grill: both came with rice and fried plantains. We also asked for beans in the side. Overall an extremely pleasant experience. Ah and did I say it already: the best churros ever!!!!

Quick service with a smile, at 12:30am Sat. Morning before the rush. Good price and good portions. Had a "La Palma" Especial sandwich : stuffed with Sweat Ham, Sausage, Pork, Swiss Cheese, pickles and mustard (See Pic)... So filling! Washed it down with a Chocolate Milkshake....The side of fries we ordered were crispy and hot... The portion of food feeds two people with room for desert. "The" late night spot in Miami, and safe we were surrounded by Miami's finest drinking coffee...

The food is good, but I leaving only two stars because of some people that work there are not nice. They serve you with the intention to get tips.If they know you won't leave tips they take longer to serve you or they just ignore you. They want you to leave money for whatever thing you buy. Sometimes I just buy a cafe con leche and they look at me like if I have to leave tips. If you are taking out the food, they expect also to get some tips just for giving your food out. Some people don't realize that if you dont eat there, they are just not serving you, so you don't have to leave tips. When you eat there it is ok but they are just wrong in the way they act.

First chilly night in South Florida after a wonderful dinner our friends told us we must experience this tradition of going for Churro's and Chocolate. So as much as I love Churro's I was on board. We pull up and there is a line wrapped around the building. My first thought is really? We are seriously going to stand in line for Churro's. ha ha The wonderful men we had were gentleman and gave us their jackets to keep us warm. Yes the wind was quite chilly. I can not begin to tell you how long we stood in line but did not matter, conversation was great and it was fun watching this whole assembly line of staff making these delicious treats. We finally get to order and we grab a table outside on the patio. We ordered twelve Churro's for all to share and hubby decided to get a medium Chocolate. The churro's were hot, very crunchy, great flavor and loads and loads of sugar. They were not the best Churro's I have ever had. More than anything it was the awesome company and the experience. When my friend's said Hot Chocolate, that is exactly what I was thinking. Oh no this hot chocolate was steaming hot, and thick, like a pudding almost. We dipped our Churro's in the chocolate, thank goodness it was way to rich for me. Hubby decides to drink it, oh my all I could think of is glad he has his own bathroom. LOL I do not know what time they are open until. It was late and they still had a line as long as your eye's could see. Much thanks to our wonderful friends for bringing us here and introducing us to this fun place. What a wonderful ending to a fantastic evening. Now I know where to go when it is late and I need my Churro fix.

If you want to be hung up on repeatedly for a pick up order this is the place to call!! I use to love coming here but lately THE STAFF is horrible. I called for a pick-up order no joke like five times. They would pick up the phone and hung up that is great customer service let me tell you. When I got there to pick up my order the girls were super rude and on top of it all they had no idea where my order was. I got furious spoke to the manager which really seemed to not care at all. I think they need a reliable staff and better management. They food may be good but replaceable. They are tons of other Latin restaurants around that cook just as good and cheap. Last time they get my $$ that forsure.

For hot chocolate that sticks to your gut and skinny churros that are coated with lots of sugar.... 4 stars. I didn't try anything else and probably never will. I came here for the above and I'll be back for the above until someone tells me I'm missing out on anything else. The churros have a lovely crunch and do not wimp out when they cool down. Dip these in your thick, rich hot chocolate then sip the chocolate at you chew your churros. YUM. I came here on a Tuesday night after 10:30pm and the line was totally short. Still, I was at the window for over 7 minutes waiting for 3 medium hot chocolates and a cafe con leche. 20/20 hind sight, a small hot chocolate would have been plenty for me. I saved my medium chocolate in the refrigerator to see what it'll be like in the morning.

My Spanish is terrible, but the staff here are always kind about the way I mangle a perfectly good language. And the prices can't be beat, especially if you're used to Starbucks. I've only been to the counter, and then only for takeout. Usually we come here for churros (4 for about $2), sticks of freshly fried dough, grooved so they hold more of the cinnamon sugar inside the brown paper sack. Occasionally we'll get some drinks too. Hot chocolate (about $2) is rich and creamy, and thick enough for dipping the churros into, which is kind of the whole point. You can also get Cuban ritalin for a buck or two. They call it una colada, which is Cuban coffee in a small-but-not-tiny cup. It comes with a stack of tiny plastic shot glasses so that you can share it with several friends or coworkers. If you want a rush, though, drink the whole thing yourself. Drink more than two coladas by yourself and you may as well get Ralph Steadman to illustrate your biography, because you will be well and truly in bat country. I briefly considered holding back one star because the parking lot is amazingly tiny, but relented when I realized that a place like this would fill up a ten-story parking garage if there were enough spaces for all its fans. Come here and you'll see why.

I ordered a Guarapo (The menu said $3.19 but they charged me $2.75), a Disco Volador w/ ham, cheese, & chorizo ($3.99) and a Frita ($3.69). I was sharing....I swear ;) LoL My Disco Volador was good, but they didn't cut off the crust like they used to. The churros were crunchy and sweet.... & loaded with sugar. The guarapo was refreshing but I wish it were cheaper....I could drink it by the gallon! I'm not sure what happened when Robert was there but they were making fresh batches of churros for other customers while I waited for my food. The same old machine that was there when I used to go as kid was still being used. They pull down on the giant metal wheel to force the batter out, then grab the churro (with their hands....) to break it off and drop it into the fryer. They also fried up a bunch of those giant elephant-ear-looking guava empanadas while I was there.....yum! I must point out that Frita was not my favorite. It was alright but not like El Mago's. It had wayy to much paprika and cumin (?) and I'm certain this was a pre-made patty or something. I have to say that although this place is really dirty and could use several hours......make that days.....of elbow grease their food is really good and they're open around the clock. They are always packed whenever I drive by which means they must be doing something right.

It's late. You're hungry. Dont want fast food. You see a familiar food stand that has been around for ages. stop here. walk up to counter- order tostada, 2 croquetas and a batido de trigo ( or mamey, whatever your preference) . Or Materva if perhaps you're lactose intolerant ( you know who you are) consume. plunk down your 5-6 bucks and go on your merry way.

I grew up right next this place and still live on the same block. So close in fact, I can smell the days-old grease from my front yard. However, I only go if a friend drags me along. Even drunk me stays away from this place. Service: Beyond rude. If you don't speak Spanish (or in my case, look like you don't speak Spanish) you will be ignored. A friend dragged me along with her and it took her twenty minutes for croquetas. The greeting you get when the "ladies" finally acknowledge you is pretty much "What do you want?" It then takes forever for them to grab your food from the case (eternity of you're waiting for something cooked), charge it, etc. Food: Sub-par at best. Overpriced meals. However, I'll give credit where it's due...the hot chocolate on cold nights hits the spot. Facility: I've never been inside, but I cam see the dust and grime caked ceiling fan in the kitchen from the outside counter. The corner facing 61st Ave smells horrific. Not inviting at all. In fact, it screams "food poisoning". There are too many good places to get Cuban food in this city. Don't waste your money here.

If all the late night Cuban spots are closed (La Carreta, Sergio's, etc.) this place is a sure bet to get your fix. They are most famous for their churros and hot chocolate, especially on those two or three days where it gets below 70 in Miami. If you go on one of those days, prepare to either wait in line, or be ignored by a server unless you get really aggressive. On those non-cold days, you could get decent service from the outdoor cafe servers, but getting waited on a table and such is total overkill. Especially on late nights during the weekend. Out of the four times I've been in the past few months and decided to actually sit down, three of those times the waitress disappeared for a good while between visits to our table. Get ready to flag them down with a look and a wave, because it gets so packed on Friday and Saturday nights, that they have only about two or three waitresses running the entire inside of the restaurant. So the service is a mess, you might have to get in their faces about it. The food on the other hand, is not that bad. The pan con bistec (steak sandwich) has never let me down, the meat is always nice and the bread crunchy. Their churros are pretty good, but make sure they put them in a brown bag, instead of the cheap plastic tray with sugar dumped on top. You need to have that good old brown bag, full of grease spots, with the sugar dancing around inside. Shake it up! I have friends who swear by the coffee at this place, and one buddy of mine loves their Cuban sandwich with a twist (that he came up with). Strawberry jelly on the side. Some say that's an Elena Ruth. He begs to differ.

Please take note, this review is for La Palma's churros & chocolate only. I have yet to actually go inside this La Palma and actually order some real food. That being said, allow me to tell you about Miami's best 'drinking' chocolate. Yes, I call what they serve at La Palma drinking chocolate as their elixir of life transcends that of hot chocolate status and is indeed drinking chocolate. What is drinking chocolate you ask? Simple, imagine you have a chocolate bar. Now imagine someone melted said bar into a cup. Now drink that. Now you know what drinking chocolate is and La Palma is where to find it. However, proceed with caution. La Palma's drinking chocolate is not for the weak of heart. You must not only like chocolate, you must love it and if you do, then YOU WILL LOVE THIS DRINK. La Palma serves their drink in 3 sizes, however the small is plenty....trust me. Make sure get an order of churros with your drink so that you can consume their churros y chocolate in 4 easy steps: 1. Dip churro 2. Eat churro 3. Drink chocolate 4. Repeat Though, to be perfectly honest, their churros aren't tops. One night when my date and I went there we were quite dismayed to find that their churros were frozen and are not handmade. They also serve their churros with WAY too much sugar. Yes, I said it, too much sugar. My date and I both agree that next time we come here, we will ask for the churros without sugar, I mean, hell, you're going to dip them into the drinking chocolate anyways, right? And that's plenty sweet. I feel like the churros they used to sell on the streets were better than La Palma's. Regardless, their churro and chocolate combo is perfect for those rare chilly nights in Miami or when you must simply have a chocolate fix.

really a 3.5 this place is very miami and by that i mean very cuban. its your typical cuban restaurant, think la carreta meets palacio de los jugos. the waitresses are bound to call you "mi amor, mi vida, mijita, etc" they are most well known for the churros, you can get them at the ventanita or inside the restaurant. when its cold, this place gets packed, at any hour of the day you will find a bunch of ppl dipping their churros into the "chocolate" -- that was in spanish by the way, in english, just hot chocolate. but this isnt your usual usual hot chocolate, its thick and creamy. i mean thick, like almost undrinkable. they have all the other regular cuban staples to order. the croquetas are notably good. i havent been since last "winter", lol. but am really looking fwd to a visit soon!!

I love this place. And not because of the chocolate con churros like everyone else does. I love it because of the ubber Cuban feeling. You walk in and it's so typical. The servers are friendly and the croquettas, fritas, cafe con leche, and anything else Cuban are delicious!!

La Palma turned out to be just what I needed in the wee hours after flying into Miami from the West Coast. Traditional, simple Cuban dishes, well-prepared and very tasty, at reasonable prices. I can't say that the service was excellent, but I do know that I entered the place pretty hungry, left the place really full, didn't spend too awfully much time or money in there, and was pleased enough by the experience to plan to repeat it again soon. People watching was above average as well!! (Next time, I will have to try the churros!)

Went for dinner. You never really now about the service here. It was moderate. It could have been much better since it was not very fully. The food is still good. I had the chicken soup and the pollo a la plancha with white rice and plantains.

One of the better cheap Cuban places in Miami on 8th street. Open 24 hours a day and good anytime. The food is not the best but cheap and decent enough. They have indoor and outdoor seating and a outside window for coffee and churros which is always popular late night.

I may be hated for this review. La Palma is known to many as having the best Chocolate con churros in Miami. People stand in line in the freezng cold to get their hands on this. Although I must admit I have done this as well I don't believe they are that great! Honestly people if you want a good hot chocolate go to public get a bar of chocolate, carve it up and pour it in hot milk. It's delicious!

This isn't a 24 hours sit-in indoor restaurant, but it's window is open for business for 24 hours. But this place isn't really known for having the best Cuban food - it probably is standard, although I can't vouch it since I didn't come here for Cuban food. What this place is known for, however, are the churros. Churros are Latin American "doughnuts" in which you can dunk into a hot chocolate, coffee, or whatever of your liking. They basically are dough sticks covered in sugar. The Cuban churros are of the type found in the Caribbean and South America - they're doughy, soft in the center and crispy on the outside. That's vastly different (and in my opinion, superior) from the Mexican style churros which tend to be crispy and dry all over, inside and out. The churros at La Palma is often considered as the best in Miami. And thankfully you can easily get them at any hour of the day or night. It's also a great place to chat with friends over churros and coffee in a casual setting. Roughtly, the long churros cost $1.60 for 4, if I'm right, but no more than that. The hot chocolate costs 75 cents. Very affordable and worth the deal if you have a sweet tooth needing a quick fix. INTERESTING SIDE NOTE: This is the only Cuban restaurant I've witnessed that has a sign up on all of its doors saying that they don't use Trans Fat.

If you want to satisfy for hunger at 3 am after a night of drinking this is the place to be (only if you are too lazy to drive to Sergios or La Carreta) Their service at this time sucks since the staff is worn out and are dying to leave specially after dealing with a bunch of drunks or the herd of old people coming from the Cascada nightclub. Overall the food is not bad but could be better. the Elena Ruth used to be huge full of Strawberry marmalade and packed with cream cheese and turkey, not anymore.

Yelpers, this is also a Churro & Chocolate ONLY review... A friend of mine had been ranting and raving about this place for weeks, so I finally decided to try it out for myself. It was actually during a few weeks back on Saturday when it was freezing for Miami standards... aka 40 degrees oustide. 2 friends and I went to this establishment and decided to get a table indoors as it was raining outside and have some churros and chocolate to cure the chills. The service was good, our order was taken quickly and the food was served in just one moment. However, the churros and chocolate were a bit below expectations. The churros were served warm, but not hoooooot. I like them steamin usually so that the sugar melts on them. That was already kind of a disappointment, but then came the chocolate. It was sooooooo rich and thick, I wasn't sure whether I should eat it or drink it. It tasted great, but I think it should have been a little less rich and maybe then I could have finished even half of it. All in all, the churros and chocolate were good, but not great. I may come back here another day for food, but I'm not sure I'll be recommending La Palma for late-night churros and chocolate.

To me, this is more of a fun, "only in Miami" people-watching spot than a place to enjoy quality food. But, its open 24 hours (translation: good for drunk munchies) and most locals know of it as *the* place to get churros on a chilly night. Most also know that the churros here can only be accompanied (and dunked, of course) in this restaurant's version of hot chocolate, which, to be honest is more like a melted Hershey's bar rather than warmed milk flavored with cocoa. But who cares, consuming calories with reckless abandon is part of the fun at La Palm's (again, I must stress, it's more enjoyable when your drunk). I used to really like the ham croquettes here, but I tried them recently and was slightly disappointed. Stay away, altogether, from the fish croquettes. Not good. At all. Also, if you plan to make a visit to La Palma and don't speak Spanish, make sure to bring someone who does - it'll definitely enhance the experience. Oh, and it's not you, the girls who work the counter are always grumpy.

Prepare to be ignored by the staff, especially on not so busy nights, and if you end up ordering, prepare to wait a super long time to get that food. The food is pretty good here, one of the best vaca fritas in all of Miami. So if you get to order, you will like it, but it is not worth the wait.

I can't give ZERO stars, otherwise I would. I will never go to this place again. Been twice. The absolute WORST service I have ever seen. Maybe it's because I don't speak Spanish or maybe it isn't. But twice already I have stood at the window waiting to order only to have the little 'citas walk right by me in favor of others standing at the window. I asked if I could order and was given the "uno momento" mumble while she took care of the others who arrived after me then mumbled some things to her waitress friend while gesturing towards me. The first time I was here I had the churros. Yeah, they were okay. But I think the oil was old as they had an off-taste. Didn't want to complain because it wouldn't have done me much good. You can have your stinkin' churro fried bread. There's better comfort food after a cold front anyway. I'm so over this town!! By the way, we were coming from Caffe Italiana, which was great. I'll review later when I get over my absolute disdain for the overrated Las Palmas piece of crap.
