I bought a coupon for this restaurant for my daughter, who LOVES Mexican. So, that is where we celebrated her birthday. For the small dinner party, this was a good choice. The service was good, with the young waiter most engaging and helpful. There was also a young lady who kept the tables supplied with chips and salsa. While the menu was not unique or ragingly authentic, it was full of comfort food choices, insuring that you can make your choice with minimal difficulty. I had a Chimichanga Trio, with one beef, one chicken and one chicken. While all three were good, the shrimp was the star, with its juicy, fresh filling. One of the guests had ordered a plate that had pictured a dish that contained broccoli, but her's did not. Still, she was satisfied with its quality. I think my only suggestion to make this place closer to five stars is more fresh, greens on the menu. The carbohydrate content of most of the entrees was considerable, so it would have been nice to have something crisp and refreshing available. The beer on tap was crisp and served in mugs that keeps it cold. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. A couple at our table brought their infant son and since it isn't necessarily unfriendly to children, there weren't any others, so the noise level was perfect. The baby seemed happy to be there, calm the entire time. We will return.

I've been to Peppers plenty of times before but had noticed it wasn't so great in most recent visits. This last time, instead of bringing home leftovers, I came home with a raging case of acute food poisoning that could only be calmed with anti-nausea medication designed for cancer patients, as well as a large bottle of pepto that I downed like tequila shots after winning the national championship. The beef, more possibly human meat, was beyond questionable, a plate of nachos contained more than enough human hair, and the shrimp was grayer than fifty shades himself. 1/10 would not recommend.

Came here for lunch. Thumbs down for food. Enchiladas came with barley any cheese or sauce. Also tortilla was dry. My buddy said his ground beef taco was bland. Only reason I gave it 3 stars was good service and 2for1 drafts...

Used to come here all the time and the food and service was always excellent. Last two times there were different workers. Not sure if management changed or just the workers but one female worker in particular both times was very rude. She saw me and my son walk into the restaurant and continued to talk to another waiter. After several minutes another couple walked in and only then did she decide to sit us. She also came out and took the order of the people after us and they had their food before our order had been taken. Second trip, same rude experience with the same lady and won't ever go back. This used to be my favorite place. Not anymore.

My favorite Mexican in town. Good fast service. Food always of good quality. I'm a vegetarian.

My husband and I LOVE this place. Everyone is very cordial and attentive to your needs and the food tastes great. I personally LOVE their deep fried ice cream. ..yumm! And I won't have to tell you the difference between pepper's and other so-called "Mexican restaurants" because I know you'll notice. Definitely recommended! !!!

This is by far the worst service ever. The service was good ,but the kitchen staff added sour cream to the burrito and it was not listed on the menu. After they had served the contamination food to my sister in law, who is highly allergic to dairy, the manager 1. was not will to talk to us and 2. Said they were at fault but oh well we will take $1.50 off the bill. This after my sister in law spent 15 minutes throwing up in the bathroom and parking lot. Do not go here if you have ANY ALLERGIES. The menu is unreliable and the kitchen changes at their will, not the customers.

If every El Jalisco in town disappeared, you'd have places like Peppers to remind you that not all Mexican restaurants are created equal. While the food was alright and the service short, I liked the fact that we could eat without much noise or chatty servers. This isn't a great place to go for a cheerful atmosphere, but it is good if you're hungry and want some standard American Mexican food. The best thing is that the prices are about what the food is worth. Peppers seems like a lunch place that caters to work crowd, but doesn't do much to attract families in the evenings or weekends.

First time. Packed with a wait told us it was good food. Food didn't disappoint! Service was good.

I'm giving 2 stars because I cannot give 2.5..The food is okay, the drinks are great and the prices are fair. Service, however, is really lacking. The server barely checked on us. He was a bit rude. He wasn't the only one who behaved this way. From the hostess to the first server we had (they switched shortly after the drinks were ordered), everyone seems to be in a hurry. The salsa tastes store bought. The food came out in moments. Are they just heating up pre-cooked food and taking it out? The chips, meh. I get better service at a Taco Bell at 1am. All in all, I'd probably come for just drinks in the future.

Went there two times (Lunch and Dinner). I really liked the lunch menu it's just a few bucks... I had Tacos for dinner not up to the mark. But I will definitely go back

The best thing about Pepper's is their queso blanco and their outdoor seating. Besides that, you're better off going to El Tapatio. Their food is good, but nothing fantastic. It's very greasy at times. Because we used to live in close proximity to Pepper's we would go there often. The service was hit or miss. Sitting outside is nice depending on the ridiculous Florida heat, but the surroundings are very ugly and unpleasant.

I am picky about my Mexican food (a Texas wife will do that). However, if you want to get as close to being a stone's-throw from the border go here. The enchiladas verde is flavorful and well done, and the Chile Colorado is a pleasure everytime we order it. The carnitas and chile relleno is also a wonderful dish to have. My only suggestion: charro beans. Start serving them, if you can.

I decided to try Peppers today as it seems to be very popular with my coworkers. The food was decent, standard Mexican fare you can find at pretty much any restaurant of that variety. The prices were good, especially for the lunch specials and in comparison with the amount of food given. However, the atmosphere is definitely lacking -- the booths are very close together and one of them rocked back and forth whenever the person on the other side moved. In addition, somehow we received our food before our beverages. And not to say our beverages were any way delayed but that we literally received our food faster than one would expect of a fast food place, like McDonalds. It's kind of a bizarre experience to have barely started the post-ordering conversation before receiving huge plates of Mexican food. The rest of lunch was spent discussing how much of it was pre-made and warmed up. Obviously, I doubt the freshness of the food. Subsequently, our waiter followed up with us every two minutes and seemingly wanted us to hurry out of there. The place was less than half full and it wasn't even 12:30 yet. Overall, the whole experience was pretty disappointing and I'd rather eat at another one of Tallahassee's Mexican restaurants.

Pretty solid mexican at a good price point. Some of their steak items are great and they have a chicken dish called the popeye that is fantastic!

  • Christina J.

Food was definitely nothing special (their "salsa" tastes like spicy marinara sauce, my fajita taco salad was soaked and *swimming* on the plate from the watery-ness of the chicken) and it took forever to get our waters refilled. And be forewarned that if you use a "coupon" (living social/groupon), you are not "eligible" for drink specials. (even though there are no exclusions on the actual coupon...which makes it seem very much like they just make up these rules as they go). Also, they apparently don't know how to do math, because they taxed us twice!! (once on the first total, and again on the total minus the coupon amount) And even though we brought it to their attention and kept explaining over and over that you can't tax someone twice, they wouldn't take it off. This was actually our second time coming here (first time was terrible, but we were willing to give it one more try), but after 2 bad experiences, we will *never* be coming back, coupon or not.

All things considered, this is a solid 3.5 stars, but not quite solid enough to round up to 4. Boyfriend's parents just moved to this end of town, and were excited enough about Peppers to make us want to go for lunch on Sunday. The service was good, the food was standard (the salsa was so-so, although the meat was excellent), and the prices were absolutely what I would expect from a locally owned Mexican joint. Fairly typical Mexican - good, diverse menu, but nothing special. Basically, everything you would expect from your local Mexican restaurant. There are better places in Tallahassee, but there are also absolutely worse.

Worst Mexican food I've ever had. The fajitas looked, smelled, and tasted like Chinese takeout. Everything (including the salsa) was so thoroughly doused in lemon juice that it tasted like Pine Sol. It was revolting. The restaurant was nearly empty, but they chose to seat us next to the one other party in the place... a dozen drunken, screaming girls. Would have appreciated a booth on the other side of the restaurant. Finally, the restaurant itself has no charm. The booths are extremely uncomfortable, and the lights are SO bright, better suited for a hospital or Walmart than a restaurant. Go to Los Amigos or El Jalisco for Mexican food that actually tastes good, in an environment that is pleasant. (Los Amigos is literally right down the street!)

This was a great surprise. My daughter who is a very attentive diner, recommended it, and we went together for my first experience. The food was really great, the service was good. Food was served very quickly. My second visit was not such a quality experience. I found the facility not as clean, the staff hurried and inattentive.

Terrific food, great service, tremendous value. This reminds me of when I lived on the Mexican border and used to slip across a couple of time a week to eat. If you're a pretentious food snob who's looking for some meal they read about in Saveur that starts with huitlacoche and ends with goat milk caramel you may as well spare yourself the frustration, but if you want simple, authentic, high quality Mexican fare then you can't do much better.

Had lunch here today after vowing never to go back... My co-workers raved about the food and alas, I was there once again. I have to admit that the food is pretty good. I had a steak burrito with a white queso sauce. Very tasty and well priced. My last trip was a nightmare and we vowed never to go back because of the service, so it's a toss up! Go to Peppers when it's not busy and enjoy the food, but don't expect to have great service!

The quality of food, drink, and service has declined since my last review. I don't want to slam the place because it is still acceptable Tex-Mex, on par with every other place you've been to and reasonably priced. But the ingredients don't seem as fresh, and my party has had some mix-ups with the orders.

We've eaten here off and on mainly because I can get one or two dishes that don't have cheese in them. Food is OK, but not outstanding. I like the taquitos. Our biggest complaint is the service, which at times borders on downright surliness. On two occasions, we were actually told we could not have more chips, and one we were told we could not have another bowl of salsa (which isn't all that great to start with). I was totally stunned. Needless to say, the waiter's attitude and poor service was reflected in his tip. We have not gone back but one time since then. The food was not particularly good, the beans were stiff, the meat had little flavor and was dried out in the taquitos, and the staff was almost sulky. They need to brush up on customer service skills and do something with their culinary abilities. The salsa recipe needs improvement because it tastes like tomato sauce with some garlic salt thrown in it. We're pretty much done with this place.

I give this place two stars, not because the food isn't great, but because the service is downright snooty. I went their for my friend's 21st, she ordered a margarita and the waiter carded her (of course: no problems about that) after staring at her uncomfortably for like 5 minutes, he said "okay" and went to get our drink order. 10 minutes later came three burly employees ready to inspect the I.D. They looked at it, grunted rudely and finally agreed to get her the drink. I understand they feel the need to scrutinize I.D.'s because, in a college town, there are so may fakes around, but there are ways to do it respectfully. My friend (the birthday girl) was so exasperated with the situation that she nearly told them to forget the whole thing. We received no apologies for the incident. Point of this tirade: Food is excellent. Service, not so much. Go to El Jalisco. It's more conveniently located and the service can't be beat.

I really don't know what the other reviewers where thinking to give this place such a poor review. If you've only been there 2 times and had a good experience and bad experience then a mediocre review is expected. Go there once and go off on the place, really doesn't make for a good review. I go there at least 2-3 times a month and this place is great. If you are looking for the standard Tallahassee Mexican food (ala glorified Taco Bell) then this place is not for you. If you want your beef tacos then go to Morelias, Los Compadres, El Jalisco or any of the other cookie cutter Mexican places in town. As a real fan of Mexican Food and having moved from California where Mexican restaurants are as common as Church's in the South, this is as close as it gets folks. This place serves actual grilled steak, grilled chicken and real pork dishes, none of that shredded meat crap that has been sitting in a vat in the back. The price of the food is very reasonable and if you are a fan of tequila then you will be in heaven. This place has the most extensive collection of high end tequila that I've seen in town. The service here isn't bad considering how busy they get, for what it's worth.

Mexican Cuisine
