Sashimi quality was poor. You can tell by their color. Perhaps tuna should be closer to red than artificial pink? However, I might be a biased reviewer coming from Boston sushi/seafood. All in all, I wouldn't visit again.

Love this place. I order delivery at least once every couple weeks. 99% of the time I have my food within 45 minutes. (for sushi delivery on a weekend night in Miami, that is FAST). They have some really good rolls with lots of different fish, which I really enjoy. I don't like the rolls with just a little bit of fish. Prices are about average, but well worth it. Try the Rolling Star...the best!

One of my favorite restaurants for great quality sushi. Always fresh and great variety! Service is fast and the staff is friendly and great prices as well. If you love sushi this is the place for you!

Love this place. If you just want good sushi in Kendall, this is one of the best spots in the area. Just good all around. Great selection of basic rolls, along with a few of their own concoctions. The tuna tower is a must try. They also have Thai food on the menu if your ate not feeling Japanesey. Parking can be a pain sometimes, especially on the weekends when it gets packed. It's not a large venue, but can accommodate large parties. They also run coupons in the local paper for 10% off your bill, so that's a bonus. Definitely check it out if you are in the area, you will not be disappointed.

The super crunchy roll was delicious! It had Crab, avocado, cucumber, tempura flakes, mayo, and masago. You can get it topped with smoked salmon or shrimp, I choose shrimp. I also got a side of spicy mayo and the whole thing was awesome. I loved every bite! My boyfriend got the rainbow supreme roll which he said was very good as well. We also started with the spring rolls, spicy octopus, and a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon. Both of the appetizers were alright I didn't think the octopus was all that good, it didn't have much flavor besides the spice. The spring we're were your classic spring rolls with a tasty orange sauce. Over all it was a good experience the rolls were very good, the service was nice and fast, and the atmosphere was nice.

Kampai really bummed me out. All the sauces were too sweet and too thin. The ahi tuna was stringy to our dismay. The rice was also mushy. Rice was bad. $10 tuna tower - stringy $10.95 yellowtail jalapeno - learned I must not like yellowtail $9.50 zombie roll - too sweet $9.50 bahamas roll The food is actually extremely visually appealing. It's beautifully made. The taste and texture did not live up to expectations unfortunately. The only highlight of the trip was our visit to the reptile and Sunset Corners liquor store afterwards.

When arriving at Kampai, my wife and I were a bit put-off by the run-down Reptile shop it neighbored in the shabby two-store plaza; but you can't choose your neighbors so we dove in. We shouldn't have. The interior is pleasantly decorated, but definitely has that 'seen better days' vibe. But again we are optimistic, as many gems are to be found in slightly divey locales. Although, when it comes to consuming raw fish, we are a bit particular that a place looks well kept. Bottom line is that this place is one of the worst quality sushi places to which we've been. I could go to Publix and have better fish in their packaged sushi platters. Overall critique: the fish isn't fresh, the soggy flesh felt defrosted, and although I don't for sure know whether the fish was sushi grade, it doesn't taste as if it was. So now, the details: Tuna Tower. The best thing we had, which still was mediocre. The tuna was not firm nor flavorful, and the guacamole was unimpressive. I've had the equivalent dish at other places, and they far exceeded this. The "Rainbow Deluxe Roll" used a ton of cream cheese, the fish slices were thin and small. And the fish itself suffered the same problems as with the cuts featured in my wife's Sashimi Mori. The fish used in the sashimi mori were mealy and soft, with none of the firm texture you associate with fresh, quality fish. The flesh is watery, and feels like the meat was damaged by the ice crystals. Also the white fish tasted quite fishy. The tuna color was also not indicative of fresh, quality product. I will say, the prices are cheap for sushi, which might be a mark in it's favor. I truly don't relish being one of the naysayers for a well-reviewed restaurant. But then again, I also feel with sushi, quality is important.

The sushi here is delish!! Zombie roll is my fav. It has 3-4 different types of raw fish in it and it has 10 pieces not the normal little 6 piece. It has a good portion for the price. The tom kha gai is delish. It is a coconut milk base soup and it is very hearty because of the soup base also has mushrooms and your choice of chicken or shrimp. I like it with either or it is quite good. They also have fresh sea urchin or uni in japanese. It was the first time I tried it ever here! And I got to say it was good. Not fishy at all very very fresh. It has a creamy texture and tastes like blue crab roe (I'm from MD so we eat a lot of crabs). Very light in flavor. Probably one of the best places for sushi I have been to.

Where to begin. This restaurant has been one of my favorite sushi spots for awhile now. Their Tuna Mushi, is one of their addicting appetizers and its a good way to start the meal. I usually order the Super Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll, simply because I can't imagine anything else tasting as amazing as that roll. I have tried other rolls-my boyfriend orders at least three, and I have to say, the quality of the fish is very fresh. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys sushi. As far as the service, the waiters/waitress are always taking care of their tables.

Hands down my FAVORITE sushi place ever!! the staff is so friendly! The food is fresh and never disappoints. Don't understand why people go to the over priced Shabui but this place is so much better!! The Saba is awesome! absolutely love it!! The crab ragoons have a pinch of cilantro which give it a pop of taste... so yummy. True to its name, the Yummy-Yummy roll is a top seller. This place is a MUST try!! TIP: if you order online , you get 10% off.

Good but not great. Rice seemed mushy- but the fish was sweet and delicious. Service was at times cold and others very friendly and attentive. The signature dish is a Tuna Tower which is a mix of avocado and spicy mayo. Good but not great. Would I go back? Yes, but not running back. There are plenty of other sushi places I'd rather try first.

My family and I use to go here. The sushi was ok and it's near us. However, the re are some of the rudest servers and people who answer phone. We never returned and luckily found and even better sushi place also nearby. Food ok - service terrible.

  • Ree R.

Mediocre sushi, I had the extra crunchy spicy roll sushi, and it tasted soooo bland, the slices were uneven, too much rice, fake crab meat, a small slice of smoked salmon, and absolutely no flavor. The good part is that I was able to at least eat it and it didn't have stale ingredients. I'd try another sushi that is recommend but their spicy ones suck.

Solid option for sushi. The fish is always fresh and the staff is nice. I have been eating here for a long time 9its right by my house) and I have never been disappointed. They also do take out and delivery.

Everything we order was good. Service was fast and server really friendly and nice. We order JB tempura roll and thai panang curry Really good! Chicken from the pad thai noodles was a little cold which made me rate this restaurant with only 4 stars. Everything else was good and tasty

Omg this place is awesome!! I loved the Masaman curry! So good. My bf had the garlic chicken which was also great. We ordered for delivery and they said it would be 45 mins to an hour because they were so busy but ended up arriving before. Would love to try eating there as opposed to ordering delivery but overall very pleased.

Went in for the first time after driving by for the past god knows how long on my way home from work. Place is cozy inside. The staff is really friendly and the service was pretty good. The mixed vegetable rice really brings big pieces of vegetables. Wifey had the French Roll and I had the Beauty and the Beast roll which were great. We also ordered dumplings. It was good but I prefer them fried over steamed. I would recommend this place. Nice and clean to.

This restaurant is hands down one of my favorite places to get fresh, fast, and delicious sushi! Not only have I stayed a loyal customer of kampai for just over 10 years I make it a point to go at least one month..yes that's how much I love this place. The talented sushi chefs along with the quality seafood, intimate setting and speedy service will have you coming back as well.

Came here today . Was greeted upon entering . I was taken to my seat and was asked what beverage I would like. The food is delicious . I had chicken teriyaki with fried rice . Also a order of fries. The service was great , I felt the waiter took long between bringing the tab and picking up the payment but no big deal , I will be back , soon . Very soon!

The rolls are always delicious! The service really lacks tho. Servers are a bit unfriendly. The Mango Roll, Bahamas Roll, and Super Crispy are my favorites. The location could be better, it's tiny and the parking is a mess. Not too bad on pricing.

I feel like people in Miami take their sushi very seriously. Everyone has an opinion on what the best local sushi joint is - whether it's Akashi, Shibui, Matsuri (I even have one friend who is admant that it's Fuji Hana). For me, it's all about Kampai. The place is a tiny hole in the wall that looks a little dumpy from the outside. Don't let the looks of it fool you - pay attention to the tiny parking lot which is consistently packed with cars. It's no secret - inside is some of the freshest and most delicious sushi you'll have in Miami, if not anywhere else. I always order the Zombie roll and either a Tanzana, Salmon Skin, or California on the side. It's always way too much food but I just can't help myself. The rolls here are large - 10 pieces each (save for the jumbo rolls I think), and really reasonably priced - most of their specialty rolls are under $10. As far as their specialty rolls go, it's possible I've never seen a longer and better list of options. Kampai was one of the first sushi places I discovered and it's left me spoiled for most other sushi places I've visited thereafter (what? you only offer 10 different rolls? that's it?). The service is usually pretty good. A little dry, but very efficient. Also, even though the restaurant is small and often packed I've never had to wait long for a table. If you're coming with non seafood friendly friends: while I always order the sushi, I have had a chance to sample several of their thai dishes (the Massaman (sp?) Curry is a favorite) and they're no slouch in that department either. Basically, this is the best of the best when it comes to sushi. Best quality, best options, best value.

What can I say excellent food and service every time. Kampai has an extensive menu so regardless if you want Tai or Sushi you won't go wrong. The staff is friendly and remembers weather you order online, take out, or dine in.

  • Stephanie D.

We shared an order of their special friend rice which was average (definitely not better than Umami's version). However, their "Tuna Tower" & "Beauty & the Beast" sushi rolls were to die for. A must try! Overall, good experience.

  • Ang S.

Everything is yummy! The only con with this place is the wait. They get pretty busy during lunch, so expect to wait for service and food for a little while. Parking is also a hassle, especially during peak hours. They share a lot between 2 other stores, so parking is tight. Otherwise, the food is great! My fave roll is the super crunchy roll, mmmm :).

Ehhhhhh, this place is okay... I'd rather much go to: Shibui: 10141 SW 72nd St, Miami, FL 33173 | (305) 274-5578 The sushi here at Kampai isn't worth the price; the taste is weird. The staff isn't that attentive, TIP THEM good, otherwise they'll look at you weird. The reason why I go here for take-out every now and then, it's because Shibui isn't open for lunch!

Incredible that after living in Miami after almost 30 years, it's my first time visiting Kampai. The place is old but presentable, family friendly and good service/ we complaint about the ac because it felt a little hot and they immediately lower the temperature without hesitation. The food is another story, it's awesome!! - all the appetizers and the rolls were great. I will definitely return to Kampai.

  • Edward L.

If you know me you'll know that my standards in regards to food are High. I could classify myself a bit of a food snob. Freshness & portion size are key. Thankfully those points are set in stone @ Kampai. The sushi is always fresh as can be & the portions are plentiful. The service is warm and attentive as well. If I had one main gripe against Kampai is that they need to invest a few dollars to remodel or spruce up the decor inside. It's quite cheesy to say the least. I'm completely able to put that aside in order to place those tasty morsels of fish & rice in my mouth. The spicy tuna roll with spicy mayo drizzled over it instead of their Kimchee sauce is a taste bud comforter indeed. The Volcano roll is a must have. That warm crabmeat, shrimp and cream concoction is true oral nirvana. In conclusion, if fresh sushi at VERY reasonable prices is what you want then your search is over once you walk inside Kampai. You will most definitely be back; time & time again.

This is my favorite neighborhood sushi restaurant! It's fast, affordable and delicious. I love the Super Crunchy Roll (topped with Tuna), their Bakery tempura roll is definitely the most unique roll I've had, and you can't go wrong with the Kampai Roll. The Tuna Tataki is my favorite appetizer. If you're feeling under the weather, you have to try their chicken soup. Quality is amazing for the price! Also, if you are ordering take out, make sure you put in your order via their website to save 10%!! kampaisunset.com

I got the tuna mushi and the eel roll both of which were fantastic. The tuna mushi is a mixture of tuna with guacamole and crab on top of deep fried crackers of some kind. Knowing that sushi never fills me up, I got the California roll and it was awful, completely flavorless. The restaurant is nice and clean and appears to be owned by Japanese people. The sushi bar is a great place to sit watching the sushi being made

I was steered to this place by none other than YELP! What a disappointment. $70.00 for my husband and I, and the food doesn't even compare to other sushi restaurants. The wine was probably boxed, if not it tasted like it was. It was nothing out of this world, I've simply had better.

  • Ana M.

This is my favorite sushi place of all time. And I eat a lot of sushi. Nothing really compares. You don't realize until you're away from Miami how good our sushi is, but man, when I was away, did I miss Kampai. My first impression of this place was actually a really negative one because I had a roll with way too much cream cheese that turned me off this place and cream cheese in my sushi for many months. But eventually, I gave it another chance and I was won over. This is the kind of place that gets really busy (and parking can be a nightmare) but I've never really had to wait either. For dinner, they always bring you a hot towel and a tiny veggie/fruit salad swimming in delicious tangy sauce to start. That being said, they're inconsistent about both those things. But when they do it, it's awesome. Now onto the sushi. The quality of the sushi here is really some of the best in the city. It's always really fresh, both the fish and other ingredients. You're not gonna get avocado that's a little brown here. Their sushi options are really just solid. The variety, the presentation, the taste. I can't compliment the chef enough. My recommendations: Zombie roll, Mulan roll, Mango roll. Probably in that order. One of my non-sushi favorites is the massaman curry. Always really great. I'm sure a lot of their other dishes are great too but it's really hard for me to eat here and not have sushi. For dessert, try the cheesecake tempura.

I can't believe i had never been here before! Wow!!!! For a while I have been trying to find a new sushi place in the area. My boyfriend and I have our go to place but its good to change once in a while. I have passed this place many times and i have even seen their reviews on yelp but for some reason I never got around to try it until last night! We both had the super crunchy roll (cant recall the exact name) and it was delicious!! Can't wait to go back and try their tuna tower appetizer that seems to be very popular!

    (5)
  • Ash N.

It's pretty good if you like chinese food and fresh seafood but you would think the price would be a dollar or two less. It's nothing crazy good but if you find yourself in the area, go for it.

My favorite sushi spot for my husband & I. We love the tuna tower & yellow tail jalapeño. Their fried rice & coconut soup is also tasty. The service is great & the inside is nice. I definitely would recommend this place to anyone looking to eat sushi.

Nothing special... Very slow service and they forgot about one of my orders. After asking about it multiple times, the waitress finally brings it, no apologies, nothing. Food is ok. Fish tastes fresh but they use too much rice and all the sauces are a slight bit too sweet for my taste. Not great, not bad. Probably wouldn't come back.

  • Nicole H.

I come here for one reason and one reason only and that is for their great quality sushi at a reasonable price. The service leaves a lot to be desired and I have had every server there. They are all very dry and indifferent. No service with a smile here. The decor is very outdated and I wish they would spend a little money and update it because the wood paneling and yellow walls kill me. To avoid this and the bad service I usually order takeout as do the majority of people as they are very busy with takeout. Again sushi is top notch quality, always fresh, and they give you good size chunks of fish in each roll.

  • Aida P.

Food is great! Service is great! I had the crunchy roll and the marlin roll. It was amazing! Also their crab rangoon was great. Their prices are reasonable. My friend and I had water, 2 appetizers, and order 3 different rolls and spent $50. Not too shabby. Def will be back!

  • Valerie G.

Absolutely the best sushi in town. Small, cozy, not pretentious at all. Loved the ambiance especially since music is not loud and you're able to actually have a conversation without having to yell across the table! Great prices, amazing service...you must try it out!

  • Donna D.

Do not let the location throw you off. This place is amazing, the parking lot is always packed. Upon entering you become immersed in SUSHI! It was my first time there, and I sat at the bar with my cousin. I love that I've discovered this place, it's going to be my new go-to for sushi (I usually frequent Shinju, Shibui and Akashi). The staff was friendly and very prompt. I ordered the Thai Tea, and the ninja roll (I think) and the kampai roll. Everything was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I wish I had room to try the desserts and I'd go back in a heart beat.

My mother and I stumbled upon this place one day and it was an amazing Discovery! My mom usually gets pad thai with shrimp and always raves about it to everyone. I usually get the super crunchy roll which is delicious. Oh and I can't forget about the crab rangoo, it's the best I've had in Miami. Usually you can't even find the crab but this one is stuff with crab. I would definitely recommend this place.

This restaurant easily earns 3 1/2 - 4 stars from me. A group of 8 of us came here after a recent Yelp event next door at Sunset Corners. I arrived a few minutes after the rest of the group who'd already ordered drinks; I no sooner sat down and started looking at the menu when the server was there asking what I wanted as well. I ordered a beer, and it seems that I just looked back down at my menu when she was right back with my beer and a frosted glass. When we were placing our food orders a few minutes later, she asked up front which of us were together so she knew how to split the bill, which was much appreciated. Sometimes it can be a chore to get restaurants, especially smaller ones like Kampai to split checks, and even when they agree to do that, it can take time to explain how everything should be split. In this case, she got everything sorted from the time we placed our orders. Our food was delivered in good time (those who ordered Tuna Towers got theirs first), and everything I tried was excellent. The prices were fair as well, I had 2 rolls and a beer and my bill came to $18 before tip. As others have mentioned, this place is not huge or ornately decorated, but is adequate for the amount of people and the clientele who come here. The menu is fairly diverse, food is good and the presentation is well done. On this night the service was also excellent. I'd be happy to stop back here again when in the area.

I really liked Kampai. It was the first time I actually had good sushi in South Florida. Unfortunately this place is about 15 miles from my house. I ended up at Kampai because my hubby and I were going to a Yelp event at Sunrise Liquors right next door. Of course, I checked out the ratings on Yelp and they proved to be accurate. The service was great, the waitress was very attentive. The sushi rolls we had [rainbow roll, spicy tuna, & a special roll] were all delicious. We also had the steamed gyoza and that was really good. I was impressed and I will be back. So happy to have found a good sushi spot [even if it is FAR from my house].

I am glad someone photographed this place from the outside or I would have let how much this place sucked drift from my memory. First of all clean is very important when it comes to sushi. This is a hole in the wall which don't get me wrong can be a great thing since it usually keeps out the "I think because I go to the trendiest places I am a foodie". The place had a slight odor when I first walked in, but I gave it go because Miami is usually moist so mold goes hand in hand. Then after I sat down the waitress who seemed to be annoyed it was a Thursday and we can later in the evening disappeared for about 15 minutes. Now barring all that lets talk about the food. When I eat at a sushi restaurant I have a go to roll I always try, spicy tuna. If any establishment gets this right then they have a decent shot. Kampai makes the same mistake most joints in Miami make, they add Sarachi sauce to the spicy tuna mix. You lost me at go. The service is really lack luster and it took the waitress 15 minutes to bring back my drink. At point I stopped at one roll paid the bill and exited never to return again.

I have been coming to this restaurant for more than 15 years! It is hands down the best place for Japanese food. I have so many find memories of sharing meals with my family, friends and also my husband and my first date! The food here is consistent amazing! Try anything or everything! I love their teriyaki (anything) and cashew chicken. My husband is a huge sushi fan and he has tastes sushi in many places and he always comes back here for his favorite sushi combos. Love the staff also, they are always to warm and welcoming to my family and I. Will continue coming here and bringing my family.

For the price you pay this is a great deal. Lots of sushi options. The Hibachi grill was great. Wish they had a better variety on the rest of the buffet options. Green Tea Ice Cream was delicious. Seems like this place gets packed as we had to wait about 15 minutes for a Saturday lunch.Typical non attentive buffet waitresses that don't speak a lick of english.

Way back in time when I was but a California Roll eating, spicy mayo dipping sushi eater my mom took me to Kampai and I am forever grateful! Kampai's vast menu includes Thai staples like red curry (it's delicious), fresh sushi offerings, and things with a twist. What kind of twist? Well how about some delicious tuna nachos (as I like to call them). Tuna mushe is krab and tuna tossed in a spicy sauce and placed on fried wonton wrappers - tuna nachos! These things are delicious! They also have a tuna tower - tuna and avocado together, but separate! Amazingly fresh and tasty every time you order it. At times Kendall may seem like a sushi dead zone but staples like Kampai have been around feeding those of us in the 'burbs for years. For that I am thankful! KAMPAI! (Cheers in Japanese!)

The high light for us was the Tuna Tower! My girlfriend and i love Umami's fried rice so it is very difficult to surpass their quality let alone the taste. The fried rice did lack flavor but the "Beauty & the Beast" roll was verrryyy good. Over all is was Ok.

Came here after reading lots of reviews. Nice atmosphere. Service not very attentive. Very fresh sushi....in fact don't bother ordering anything but the sushi. We started with a sashimi boat....mmmm tuna, white fish and salmon beautifully displayed and sooo fresh. I ordered Tom Yom Goong with chicken and coconut milk..medium heat. Terrible...unbearably salty, no heat at all, and had chunks of freakin woody lemon grass in the soup. First time I have ever encountered that in this kind of soup. My daughter had the chicken pad thai which was bland and the noodles slightly undercooked...again lacking heat. If you want something other than sushi then go somewhere else. Oh the mochi ice cream was very good.

My friends, (pretty much all of them) are obsessed with sushi!! and they suggested we go out to this place. Now I'm not so much a sushi aficionado, so its not like I can say this is the best sushi place ever and Ive been to 50 already, but it was really good! I got the Mango Roll and was very pleased. with fried shrimp inside. Tried an eel roll piece and discovered Im not about that. The tuna tower appetizer however was delicious! We got about 3 or 4 of them, it was THAT good.

This is as good as it gets for affordable but GREAT quality sushi in Miami. I still come here at least once a month. This place just keeps me happy. I can't say it enough -- Zombie roll and their Tuna Tower. Ohhh.. and their seaweed salad. My mouth is watering. I can't wait to go back again.

After reading all those nice reviews from fellow yelpers, my friends and I decided to give this place a try. The restaurant is not too big, nicely decorated. Now to the important part, the menu! wow...the list of hand rolls and rolls was quite large..but the most important part were the ingredients of each roll, each sounded sooo delicious I really did have a hard time deciding what to get. So, what did we order? to start off, edamame of course. All together we ordered, the sashimi platter appetizer, veggie tempura appetizer, the french, avocado and crunchy roll and a hand roll. Out waiter was nice. I was def impressed by the taste and the size of the rolls. This place will def be seeing my face again!

Great hidden gem! Best tip to give you... have the Tuna Tower. It's an appetizer but it's so good you're not even going to want to share! My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

My favorite neighborhood sushi joint. Service can be a little slow but the food always hits the spot. Get the yummy yummy roll or the rainbow roll

Went with a friend for lunch. It was not too crowded and service was fast. Ordered the mango roll, a seasonal roll that isn't on the main menu. It was absolutely delicious! Came with a spicy mayo topping and tasted just as good with and without soy sauce. Followed it with mochi ice cream (green tea, red bean and mango), which was good, but probably not the best dessert on the menu. Dishes vary seasonally it seems and there is so much to order that it might not even be on the menu they give you, so I suggest asking if you saw something online that you don't see while ordering. If their other rolls are as good as the mango roll, I'll become a regular. They also have many Thai dishes and their menu is split between Japanese and Thai, with less noodles and more actual dishes.

    Really good fresh sushi

One of my favorite Japanese places in Miami. The sushi is always fresh and delicious, with my favorites being the Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll (tuna, avocado, tempura flakes, kimchee sauce, topped with tuna), and the Super Crunchy Roll (crab, avocado, cucumber, tempura flakes, mayo, masago, with eel sauce) The sushi rolls are unusually large and sometimes hard to eat, but you can always ask them to make the rolls half-sized and they'll gladly do so. The spicy mayo is delicious. They also happen to have the greatest ginger salad. The Tomyum Gai chicken soup is great, but don't order it too spicy or you might not be able to finish it. The Yaki-Soba noodles are also amazing, served on a steaming plate on top of aluminum foil. For an appetizer, my favorite has to be the Chicken Sashimi Maki which is deep fried rolls of chicken, with onions, carrots, and snow peas. The Masaman Curry is great stuff, too. The service is always spot on, for some reason, especially during lunch. Their lunch specials are good, priced from 8-10 dollars. They include box lunches of sushi/salad or soup and a main course like Tempura or Teriyaki chicken, among many other things. To top it all off with some dessert, I recommend the red bean ice cream or Thai donuts.

I love Kampai! The Tuna Mushi and the Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll are my favorite dishes! I also enjoy the Pad Thai and the Crab Rangoons. Great for take out or dining in. If you are in the area, I definitely recommend giving this place a try. They also have lunch specials on weekdays.

As I'm writing my weekly reviews, I had to try to remember when I ate here, which is not a good sign. The place is average, and nothing to write home about. The sushi is fresh, but the service is mediocre.

I have been going to this place for 3 years now and I don't know why it has taken me sooooo long to write a review. However I can truly say this is the best sushi restaurant in Miami I have ever gone to. I have been to other sushi restaurants and they don't stand a chance. I like the papaya salad, the tuna tower, the crunchy spicy tuna roll, and the chicken pad thai. Also martinis are made with sake (pomegranate martini is my fav here) and better yet they are only 4$!!!!! The food is always fresh, and you get seated right away no matter how busy the place is. I can eat at this place everyday if I could except my pocket wont!.

This is our favorite sushi restaurant. My wife and two kids have been coming here for about a decade. The food is always superb and so is the service. Our favorite server us David. He's really friendly and provides very professional and personalized service.

So this is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants that I keep going back to. I always tend to order the same things so here are my favorites if you'd like to try them: Masaman curry (it comes with a mild sauce, avocados, and potatoes, with your choice of meat or vegetarian), Mulan Roll, French Roll, Pascale Roll. I also recently tried their new Tuna Mushi appetizer which is like Sushi nachos: guacamole, some spicy sauce, fried wanton, and a piece of raw tuna on top. I loved them! The atmosphere is nice, you can tell that it has a good following and business does well. The only complaint I have is the service, it definitely has room for improvements. Last time I was rushed to order and felt a bit bullied by the waitress, so from them on I've ordered take-out. Other than that, I think the sushi here has a great, fresh flavor that is hard to find elsewhere.

VERY impressed by this place! Although I have my all time favorite go to sushi restaurant, I decided to give this place a try. Of course I read up on the reviews and decided to have the Tuna Mushi and the Zombie Roll. The tuna appetizer reminded me a tuna tartar served on nachos (fried wontons). It had a great flavor and fulfilled my tuna tartar craving for that day. The Zombie roll had tuna, salmon, snapper, black masago, avocado, and scallion served with miso sauce. A different roll then the ones I'd usually order since I am an eel roll lover, but very happy with my decision to get this roll. The roll was a good size and the fish was very fresh. After giving this place a chance, I see myself going back and trying different things from the menu. Kampai, you may have worked your way up to my number 2 sushi spot on my list ;)!

Kampai is delicious!! I love love love sushi and every time I go there I'm in heaven. There's not much to say about it, it's just awesome. It's not a very big place but has a good ambience and is also very clean. The service is good and the food taste super fresh. I would definitely recommend sushi-lovers to go, and it's great for lunch or dinner (and dessert -fried ice cream omg)! =] I won't forget to mention it's right off Sunset, which means it gets rush hour-ish around the time you'll probably want to go and the parking lot sucks, so be careful turning in and coming out of the lot!

50 Shades of Sushi Those who know me, know that I love food. Some people may find that to be surprising given my size, but I can't help it, it's in my genes. I come from a long line of foodies. I grew up in a family where eating and enjoying food dominated conversation. While dining we talked about food, whether it was the meal we were eating, a meal eaten in the past, or what was to be served for dinner to following evening,. I never stood a chance. One of my favorites to eat has to be sushi. I'm not ashamed to admit it, but I think I'm in love and have been for a many years. If you've read my reviews, that shouldn't surprise you. To be honest, I've had a hard time in meeting the right local sushi restaurant to get serious and settle down with. I recently got out of a relationship with a restaurant I had been working at. We had been together for almost 2 and a half years. I thought it made me happy, I thought it knew what I liked, I thought I didn't need any other restaurant. It turns out I was wrong. Love can be so blind. It's been nearly four months since we split. That relationship was toxic. I told myself for months on end, it's not him, it's me. Well, I was wrong, it was totally him. It took me a while but I finally started dating other restaurants. I first tried a small place in Kendall. I was expecting a one night stand, but instead I ended up with a booty call partner. Satisfying yes, fulfilling, not so much, but still great to fill that last minute need. He's not relationship material but I'll keep him around. There's another restaurant I've been seeing recently, that's not too far from bachelor number one. What he lacks in character and style he more than makes up for in personality. Although, great for an evening with lowered expectations, this is not the restaurant to introduce to your parents. He sure works hard to make me happy, if only that was enough. I think I'll keep him in the friend zone. This is going to make me sound slutty but there's a third I've been seeing, and he lives right across the street from the second restaurant. We went on a few dates a couple years back, but then I met my ex-restaurant and soon forgot about him. He is something special though, possibly a total package, He has delicious food, fast service, and a welcoming atmosphere that isn't so fancy that it makes you feel inferior. First came your yellowtail jalapeno sashimi with yuzu sauce. You awoke my taste-buds like none other before. Then, the first bite of the Crunchy Spicy tuna roll and I was soon transported to out first date years ago. Your creamy cilantro sauce reminded me of how delicious you could be. Then you showed me you had some new tricks up your sleeve with seductive mango roll. Generous chunks, of mango paired with crunchy shrimp tempura, kanikama mix, asparagus, cream cheese, and more. It might have been the nigori, but I think I'm falling for you. Hello Kampai, I look forward to more dates in the future. This could get serious.

History; We stopped coming here years ago when it became evident that Kampai just could not consistently deliver service and quality. After hearing some better reviews of late and hungry for sushi and sashimi, we thought we'd give it another try. First they are open on Sundays, I just didn't get the times. We showed up just before lunchtime so anticipated sluggish response while the wait staff warmed up... As an appetizer I ordered the Yellow Tail Jalapeño appetizer. It was awesome, just what was needed to set the tone for lunch. I think our server was covering 3 tables during the next hour. We ordered brown rice sushi, but got white. When we mentioned it, she said "It is ok? Sorry? But it's ok if you eat it". We were certain that if we insisted that we get what we ordered, we would not like it... On the food side, the Sashimi was absolutely among the best I've ever seen or eaten. It was fresh and beautiful. I'm not certain, but I think I might want to try it out again just because the food was so darn good. From my experience here and reviewing the reviews and speaking to others, I'd say this restaurant is very inconsistent which is a shame and pulls down their ratings. It may explain why no more than 12 people lunched there between 11:30 and 1:00pm Sunday.

This place has my favorite sushi roll of all time: The Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll. It's deliciously filled with tempura flakes and tuna, topped with tuna, and drizzled with the best spicy mayo anywhere within a 3 mile radius. I go there at least once or twice a month, and would probably go there everyday if I didn't run the risk of going broke for sushi. Their Thai Iced Tea is usually pretty tasty, and their crab wontons are yummy! The only downside was that last time our waitress was so confused after having split the check three ways, she thought we had shortchanged her on her tip and started complaining as we walked out the door. Big no no. If their sushi wasn't so good I'd probably never go back after that. But I'm hooked.

Came here for dinner last night after reading many reviews on yelp, I have to say I was not disappointed. Their fish was fresh and they have a large selection of appetizers and rolls. Also, $5.00 sake martinis and glasses of wine. It's the perfect neighborhood spot to grab some sushi.

How did I not walk in here sooner? It's so close to my job and I'm very excited now! They have a GREAT and CHEAP lunch menu. I ordered the red curry chicken, mild...it was not spicy so next time, I'll move it up to medium. Even the spring roll was amazing. It's a quiet spot and the wait staff is friendly. I look forward to returning and trying out a new dish.

I believe Kampai has some of the best sushi in town! My favorite is the "American Dream" roll; shrimp tempura, fried conch, cumber, scallion, masago, topped with avocado and eel sauce,= yum! The place itself looks a little run down and could probably use some revamping. The prices are decent but for some reason I expected them to be less. I've seen Japanese restaurants in South Beach with about the same prices but this one is located next to a liquor store in sunset. I would like to think that what it lacks in locale and scenery it makes up for in the quality of food. I've yet to be disappointed with the quality of their rolls! Service can be a little slow (they only have about 2 servers for the entire place).I guess the worst thing would be the servers; they seem to be rude more often than not. Those two servers are always there, perhaps disgruntled employees?!? Overall, the food deserves 5 stars but the locale and customer service really don't. If you want to try great sushi and don't mind a little rudeness, then this is the place for you!

It is incredible that i lived on sunset and 154th ave for sooooo many years and i never even walked in here until just a month ago. What was i missing!!! sad...very sad... i had japanese cheese sticks..lol...they were yummy!!! They are reasonably priced and the service was pretty darn good. I need to hit up this place a few more times to get a solid review down. Enjoy for now.

The food is okay, service and attitude could be refined. There's an undoubtedly "fast food" energy. Taste is certainly an individual preference, as you can see from other reviews here, but in my opinion, if you have a more experienced palate when it comes to Japanese food, I might suggest other places. With other excellent choices in South Florida, and with no disrespect to Kampai or its staff, we will choose another place next time.

My go-to sushi place in the Aventura/Hallandale area have previously included Eddie Hills and Asaka. This particular night, I wanted to try some place new. The menu was pretty exciting. Some very delicious sounding rolls as well as a Thai section. We ordered the Hip Hop Roll, which is probably my favorite volcano-type roll I've had. The "volcano" part itself tasted more like crab than mayo, which was great and usually something sushi restaurants mess up in my experience. Their "special" roll was essentially a bagel roll with a slice of salmon on top and ikura. This was definitely my favorite. The fish was fresh - overall a solid roll. My least favorite, and a roll I wish I had returned was the Kimchee roll, which they should rename it to the Choking-Hazard Roll. I think we were too excited by the prospect of kimchee that we ignored that it had conch in it. Also included is asparagus, cucumber and clumps of seaweed. Eating it was not fun at all as I nearly choked on all these solid pieces. And conch? Ugh. Overall, I think if I had not ordered the Choking Hazard Roll, I would have had a near perfect flavor experience. Service was decent, the restaurant is cute and located on the 2nd floor of the Waterway Plaza. Pricewise, we spent about $35-$40 on three rolls and a piece of Ikura. It's not on the cheap end, but the quality is good.

What took me so long to eat here! This place has been in Miami forever yet I always seem to forget about it. Not anymore! They have cheap lunch specials and they are good. Especially their spring rolls! The wait staff were friendly and fast. I ordered the veggie pad thai and it was sooo good. I was happy to see that there were a variety of different veggies instead of just 2 or 3. One thing I do love is the calmness of this place. It truly seems like a nice break from lunch and from the craziness that is Miami

The restaurant is not a fancy place were people go to look at each other's latest clothing, a la South Beach. This is and feels like a local neighborhood asian restaurant. However, what sets Kampai apart is it's food. It is my favorite sushi place in all of Miami, rolls are generally large and two are enough to fill a regular person. The Beef tataki is also very good.Consistently good sushi and currys, staff that has been together for years. Try the zombie roll.A-ma-zing!

I've been to Kampai more than a few times, and it's definitely a favorite when it comes to eating some good sushi. My go-to roll is the super crunchy roll (crab, avocado, cucumber, tempura flakes, mayo, topped with shrimp). I've tried a few other rolls and none of them ever disappoint. The best appetizer is their spring rolls - warm, crunchy and delicious. For dessert, I always go with their red bean ice cream. Once you sit down you're immediately tended to and if you go for dinner, you get a little bowl filled with apples, oranges, cucumber and tomato slices with a spicy sauce prior to your meal. I've never tried it because I don't even like 3 out of the 4 ingredients, but my friends and BF seem to love it. Also, as is customary in most Japanese restaurants, you're presented with a warm hand towel to wipe off with before enjoying your dining experience. One gripe is that sometimes the service can be too slow. Usually not in getting your food or getting seated, but once you're all done and it's time to get the check. This part seems to take forever. The atmosphere is cozy, the staff is always friendly and the food is delicious.

Definitely earned its way on my list of top South Miami sushi spots. Followed Rebecca C's wise advice about Kampai the other day for a late lunch, and we left satiated and content. We had one of appetizers from their special menu - a tower of spicy tuna, tempura bits, guacamole, lettuce ... really, really tasty. No sake this time around (a rarety), so I can't comment on my usual libation. I had some sashimi and a roll wrapped in cucumber (can't remember what it was called ... no seaweed or rice, just crab, veggies, wrapped in cucumber. Light, healthy and completely delicious. The sashimi was good quality - not as good as say, Matsuri, but still good. BF had the beauty and the beast roll - also quite tasty, and some sashimi. Everything was really tasty. Desserts looked AMAZING, I had to pry myself away from the menu before I inadvertantly ordered one. So happy to have another spot we can hit up when we're in a sushi-kinda mood, which is often. We'll be back, for sure.

A few weeks ago, some of us Flo fans gathered to honor her majesty on the day of her birth at Kampai. I had passed by this restaurant so many times and had never thought to try it until Flo's birthday week. About 8 of us gathered and we were quickly seated, which was quite impressive considering that no one had made reservations and we were a big party. I ordered the spicy conch, which was good. Ramon ordered the spicy octopus, which was better. For dinner, both Zac and I ordered the masaman curry (chicken) dish. The dish was plentiful but a bit too salty. Ana ordered the crunchy tuna sushi rolls which were great! Next time, I will DEF go that route. Overall, very good service and good food. Because of the salty aspect, I think I may steer away from the curry dishes and seek sushi next time.

This place has A-OK sushi, and it's worth a visit if you're in the area. It's cozy, clean, affordable, and the menu has a wide variety. Not one of my favorites but I have no complaints. I have a lot of friends that believe it's the # 1 Sushi place in Miami, so to each their own.

Eff yea! Parking - easy Prices - fair Food - awesome I have always been desperately searching for a replacement/substitute for akashi because of the annoying waits and terrible parking situation they have. I found it. Crab and Avocado salad appetizer is delicious. Love the spicy fruit/veggie thing they bring before hand. The shrimps in a blanket were awesome. Forget what rolls I had, but they were all excellent. Been there twice in one week. Hy Vong and Akashi are two of my favorite restaurants in miami, so it should be evident that I really couldn't care less about appearances. This one is no different. Don't come here if you want to be dazzled by an atmosphere.

When your father in law tells you to go out for sushi...you wonder what kinda night you are in for. O' CONTRARE!! This place is great! Not only are the prices affordable, but the service is great and the sushi is YUM! had the pork dumplings-GREAT, French Roll-OK, Mango Roll was AMAZING and HUGE! Finished the night with some thai donuts. This is a burb joint with great taste.

Now THIS is real sushi. Every single roll I've ever tried is delicious. Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll is my favorite, or Bahamas Roll. The ginger salad is the best ever, no doubt about it. I have one friend who ordered TWO ginger salads on his first time there, one AFTER his dessert because he loved it so much. The sashimi is always fresh, the bento box specials for lunch are cheap, and the hot dishes are good too -- chicken katsu, yakisoba, yakiniku, all good stuff. and the SERVICE. we always get taken care of by the friendly staff, and if you're a regular, they treat you as such.

"Osoroshii sbisu" just in case they didnt get it the first time, that means HORRIBLE SERVICE in Japanese. I come here once in a blue moon, hance the moon is never really blue, and I rarely ever go inside I mostly order in or for pick up, but every time i walk in the service is bad. Terribly bad. I placed an order, they get it wrong (these things happen) alright...lets move forward, how about an apology? make me feel better, its been a tough day and I just want to get my food, fill up my tummy. Nope! not gonna happen, they were rude, got my order wrong twice to m,ake matters worse. So here I am writing a review on an empty stomach. Not a good call people-not at all. The manager gives me attitude, and a hand swirl, so here it is to the people that didnt help me at Kampai today two words: "Sake it"

worst place ever!! 1) I went for lunch, the server was rude, she didn't ask me if I wanted soup or salad, when she arrive with the soup I said I want salad, she complained to me that I was supposed to say something, she didn't ask. 2) The sushi bar staff were hispanic, really? not asian people preparing your food?, I am not racist but can you imagine a chinese person cooking you a cuban food?. 3) The server was cleaning the table while I still sitting, don't they usually just pick up the dishes on the table?, she was literally polishing the table, asking me to lift my arms, I was in shock, I understand the bad start I was thinking why is the rush? no one is waiting for my table, only my table and another one was taken. 4)For obvious reason I didn't want to leave tip. the server literally run to my car and told me "you forgot to tip", well to make her happy I put a dollar down.

I must start out by saying this was not my first visit to Kampai. I had heard wonderful things about it and it is conveniently located less than a mile from home. From the moment you walk in, there is a strange smell of old mildew and dust. The service is quick, but not friendly, and the food is mediocre at best. Our dinner for 4 tonight was awful all the way around. It wasn't fresh, tastes were off and it we weren't the only ones having this negative experience. The table next to us returned two items and refused to have them bring anything else. All in all, I think they have taken their great reputation for granted and do not seem to be putting effort into the freshness of their food nor the condition and asthetics of their restaurant.

This is one of the most consistently good sushi restaurants in the greater Miami area. I have been frequenting this joint for about 2 years, and I have found myself addicted. The sushi is always fresh and the service is outstanding! They will even remember you by name if you introduce yourself. Although they have incorporated an interesting Thai menu, which is pretty mediocre, it does not compare to the incredible quality of their sushi. You can choose from a number of combinations, or even choose from a variety of delicious and creative rolls. I highly recommend the Cucumber roll, and I just love the tiny palette cleanser that they provide at the beginning of your meal. The atmosphere is warm and comforting. The servers and staff are very kind and helpful. It may be a little small inside, but I have never had to wait for a table. However, you don't have to sit and eat if you don't feel up to it. In fact, they have a great special for take-out. The food is surprisingly inexpensive, and if you order online they take an additional 10% off of your check. I highly recommend this place to any sushi enthusiast and novice alike. This place is family friendly and great for a date ;).

If it weren't for the appalling service at Kampai I would have no problem giving them a five star rating. The food is always amazing, and has never disappointed. What has disappointed time and time again is the service. To be fair it is only one server that has absolutely no clue how to treat a paying customer. He is a tall asian man on the heavy side who has never greeted me and acts like he is doing me a favor by serving me. I cringe everytime I walk in and see that he will be my server because then I know I must sit through an evening of his rudeness and disrespect in order to enjoy good sushi. He cleans the table while you are still eating and asks you "Done yet?" as if trying to rush you out. My most recent encounter with him happened only a few days ago when I placed my order by phone for pick up. When I arrived I was told that there is a minimum on credit cards and since I had no cash on me, I turned back home to grab some cash (luckily I live 2 minutes away). When I returned I was greeted by another waitress who is actually one of the nicer employees, and explained to her what had happened. She then told me that there was no credit card minimum. The waiter had lied to me in hopes I would add more to the bill to meet the fabricated card minimum. After this experience I vowed never to return to Kampai. I put up with terrible service for good food, but nothing is worth that.

I know that in the past, this restaurant has been written up for issues with roaches. HOWEVER, as a Florida native, I'd like to know which of us hasn't had an issue with the bastards! Kampai is my all time favorite Japanese/Thai restaurant for various reasons--great staff (they know me by name), handy online ordering ( kampaisunset.com ) with 10% off orders, and DELICIOUS food. Great things to try: pad thai, crunchy spicy tuna roll (my especial favorite), tom kha gai, and their green tea ice cream. I love them to death. And the prices are great! DEFINITELY a must-go.

I apologize to those who love this place and have rated it 4 and 5 stars. But, I ordered some delivery two days ago and after paying $35 for two dishes was very disappointed. I ordered the Basil Chicken (medium spicy) and asked if they could make me stir-fried noodles with chicken. The basil chicken had two sprigs of basil and was red in color, probably due to the generous sprinkling of chili powder that went on top of the already prepared dish - damper on my hunger. I had also made a "special" request for brown rice and was charged a $1 for that - noone told me I'd be paying that extra buck. Now, onto the noodles. The lady told me she'd make me a stir-fried noodle dish using soba. They literally took Soba noodles and topped it with pre-prepared boiled veggies and chicken and threw that on top. No sauce no garnish, nothing - driest noodles I ever saw or ate. Oh, and I paid $3.99 for delivery, for a 10-block run - really ?!?!?!? Needless to say, it won't be a repeat order.
