The grill food is ok but I come for a frozen chicken pot pie which are the best!!!! If you eat in it has a nice atmosphere but the waitstaff can sometimes be a little loud and obnoxious. The rugulach is superb and I wish they made the pesto pasta as part of their menu but if you call ahead you can see if they serve it that day. Don't get the root beer as I have seen on many occasions sugar ants crawling around the spout.

I ordered and paid for a special that was supposed to have eggs, potatoes and meat. Only the eggs made it. No potatoes. No meat. I thought incorrectly that they would come in a second plate. Nope. I asked them to hold the toast and give me a muffin. I was told in a gruffly voice and in no uncertain terms that "we don't make substitutions and that if I wanted a muffin I would have to pay for it". Interesting, no substitutions, just omissions. Okay you ask, why didn't say something? I don't ask them to do their job. I want to see what the food and service are like without prompting. This was my second and last visit. The first was OK at best, but I thought I would give them a second chance. They won't get a third.

Have eaten there several times over the years based on a craving for Jewish deli fare, coupled with a limited number of options. The sandwiches and sides are good without being remarkable. Counter service is slow and it is sometimes hard to find a table that is both clear and set for new customers. The bagels we sampled were not worth taking home. Prices are premium for a non premium deli experience.

Service was pretty much not happening on a Saturday morning. The person who took our order was bored on her ear, she didn't explain anything (you have to ask for utensils, and the sign that informs you of that is about 6 feet to the right of the order/pay station. Well, maybe it was mentioned elsewhere, but the 3 of us didn't see it. WHY do we have to ASK for utensils? Do people carry those around? Cashier also didn't explain anything to the woman ahead of us in line, who just stood there, unaware that she should seat herself and wait for her order. Cashier was SO SLOW. So was the kitchen, and the person who brought our order. Several tables, which had stood empty for sometime while we waited, were dirty, covered with lumps of food and grease, so we had to sit where we didn't want to sit. I had what they called a bialy, but its texture was more like a bread roll than a bialy. I was born in Brooklyn and raised in NYC, what I received at Nellie's was ok to eat but it was not a true bialy. It had risen too much and there wasn't enough salt and sugar in it. It was blah. Their bagels, too (I bought half a dozen) seem to be missing something - salt, sugar and texture. They were seasoned with 'everything' or very mild cheese or caraway, etc., but missing salt (I tried 5 different 'flavors'), and more cake-like than bagel-y. Perhaps they don't boil them long enough? Not enough or no malt? Let them rise too long? They're Ok, but not great. I'll grant that they try, but the bagels are kinda disappointing. My husband is a bagel lover, and he wasn't much interested in eating more than one of the ones I brought home from Nellie's. My 2 companions had egg, potatoes and bagel platters, which they said were OK, but nothing to race back there for. The best part of this place may be its low prices for restaurant food, but perhaps if they charged more, they could afford a more experienced and enthused waitstaff, and a manager who'd ensure the tables were wiped down and the service more informative and awake. The boutique deli where you can get 'homemade' entrees fresh or frozen, is a bit overpriced but fun to explore. I really like The Honey Tree on Lockwood at University much, much better. Bigger portions, similar low prices, great food, speedy, attentive, friendly and informative service. They only have plain bagels there (and no bialys).

Ordered a sandwich for lunch with a soda. Went to the soda machine and filled the enty cup with root beer. Ate lunch (sandwich was OK) and drank the soda. Talking after lunch, I looked in the cup and found alive and dead "sugar ants" inside the cup and crawling on the outside. (no, none on the table, they were in the root beer from the dispenser! I went to the manager who said.."oh, you must have had the root beer...they only seem to like root beer, the traps don't seem to work....would you like another drink?". I think you know why I will never go back to Nellie's Deli. You can make your own choice.

My mother and grandmother went for our catering tasting - they treated them like royalty and took detailed notes on all of their comments. They continue to be amazing to work with.
