Hey Mrs. Chen. I know we don't spend a lot of time together and I know nothing about you (except that you're married), but I know that I LOVE being inside you. Shortly after I enter you, I run my fingers through your long locks of lo mein, while nibbling on your baby corn. Next, I grab a couple handfuls of your plump bourbon glazed breast chunks. After that, I move down and dive face first into your sweet and sour dark meats. Finally, I finish it all off with two scoops of butter pecan ice cream because I'm a crazy old f***er!

Adequate is the best way to describe the food. It's probably value for money but that's about it. Went to the buffet once and wouldn't rush back. Take away we had tonight really wander too great. Such a shame there is little alternative in South Sarasota.

Mrs. Chen's is our favorite Chinese restaurant! And others must feel that way also because each year it is number 1 in its category as reported by the Sarasota Herald Tribune

Not a large selection but everything they had was excellent. Also, reasonable. The soups and entrees were tasty and fresh (mussels in black bean sauce were especially good). Service was prompt and friendly. The fruit bar selection was sort of limited, but that's the only complaint.

In order to enjoy this place, you have to go in knowing what you should expect. This place is not authentic Chinese food, it's not super gourmet, and it's not a HUGE buffet, but the food is delicious, hot, fresh, and the restaurant is clean, and most importantly the staff is extremely friendly. We went with a party of 12 for a birthday, we all left with smiles on our faces and full bellies. The owners made a big deal of treating our birthday boy extra special, singing, getting him a hot fudge sundae, checking on him more than you would normally get. I'll definitely be going back.

Hello There, Last week during the 4th of July holiday I stopped by with a friend to have a late lunch over at "Mrs. Chen". The last visit I had at this Chinese restaurant was a couple years ago. Like many other customers everyone comes here for the buffet set of tables. The food as its been stated prior in these customer reviews is more the Americanized Cantonese food experience. My only nick picks are minor in contrast. For a couple of examples the dumplings which I enjoy as a favorite Chinese food item. At "Mrs. Chen" were coarse and dried out instead of being moist. There was a specialized soy sauce blend container nearby, but these dumpling puppies went down as I ate them like stones. Another item is the bowls they provide for any of the classic soup varieties they serve. The bowls are small. It takes 2 bowl servings of won ton soup you usually can get at any other restaurant with one bowl. Yes, I can seem lazy where its just feet away to grab another bowl of soup. I may be exaggerating a bit but these soup bowls are smaller than what Buddhist Monks use to collect alms for their vow of poverty. Other than these couple of minor annoyances on my part the food is overall tasty. Prices are fair and the waiter staff are quick although the occupancy at my hour was medium sized in customers.

Sorry to see you go! We were your customers for over 20 years and glad you and your mom were there. You were one of the first restaurants we went to when we first visited Sarasota. And you were my daughter first restaurant weeks after she was born. We are so sad to see you go, best of luck in your future endeavors.

I don't know why people like this place. The food is bland at best. Very small selection for a buffet.

All Chinese buffets are to Asian food what Sweet Tomatoes is to great salads, Ichiban is to great sushi, or Golden Corral to great "American" food. They all offer plenty of variety, reasonable pricing, and the ability to graze and stuff yourself all you wish. What they don't have is top quality excellently prepared food. It just can't be done with price competition, large selections, volume and unlimited quantities. On a recent YELP check-in I noticed this long standing (for Sarasota) restaurant has only 8 reviews and a not impressive 2.5 stars. We've eaten here many times through the years and don't believe the rating is deserved if the above parameters are taken into consideration. One or two reviews mentioned cleanliness, we've never seen a problem. Another mentioned things doused in oil and sauce and found the food dried out and "disgusting". Another mentioned they were looking for "good authentic Chinese food". While new wave Chinese cooking may use less oil and sauces, disgusting is a bit extreme and "authentic" is dreamland for the $6. to $8. charge with an AYCE menu. This was (I think) the first AYCE in Sarasota and it has a small amount of choices compared to newer places touting 200+ items and such. However the choices are certainly sufficient and it appears to me things are made in smaller batches, with more care and taste, and replenished regularly. Pork ribs with character, Hot & Sour soup, Pork Dumplings, Tempura vegetables and even Lo Mein are not the best I ever had, but better than other AYCE buffets in town. It is family run with a welcoming atmosphere and will continue to be an occasional stop for us. You're not going to get a Ruth's Chris steak for a Longhorn budget and that's true no matter your dining choice.

Upon entering we noticed the "Voted Customer Favorite" sign on their store. This is what swayed us. Dining with my husband, 2 year old and 7 month old, seating was a joke. We were seated in a tight isle next to some dirty/clouded mirrors. As I approached the buffet, I was keenly disgusted at the food that looked like it had sat and molded together as mush. I stuck to just the vegetables and grabbed some brown rice out of all my options. Back to the table to sample. Firs bite I thought I had taken a bite of purely oiled vegetable. Another bite. I spit it out. Everything. Everything was doused in oil. The veggies had no flavor. The rice- hard, almost crispy and undercooked. I will never. Ever. Eat here again. Nor recommend to anyone. I have been to decent buffets, but I am astounded at how this place had any business whatsoever and continues to stay in business. Poor all around.

I have been going to Mrs. Chen's for five years, and have never had a bad meal. They may not have as many choices on their buffet as some of the massive chinese buffets out there, but what they do have is fresh and delicious. Their Hot and Sour soup is some of the best I've ever had. If you're going there looking for real, authentic chinese cuisine, then of course you will be dissapointed. It is a Chinese buffet, people! But if you're looking for the delicious, Americanized chinese food that some of us know and love, look no further.

Visited Mrs Chens many times when in Sarasota . Not a big restaurant but offers good choice of food. Quality varies but overall good and at $8.20 for the buffet very good value . Will visit again when in Sarasota.

We have been fairly regular customers despite the fact that the place really needs to be cleaned up. In my opinion, it has just gotten progressively more run down over the years I have been going there. But on Tuesday April 5 we went there for dinner and there was a large, hairy, ugly bug in the hot and sour soup. Quietly, politely one of our group went to tell the gentleman at the register and his response was, "OK". OK? Not, oh, let me get that changed out? We got up to leave and explained to our waiter what had happened....not even , "I'm sorry". Seriously...what is that?

I've been going here since I was at least 7 and it never ceased to impress. I did get food poisoning once from here which kept me away for a few years but I think part of it was I tried some questionable looking sushi from the buffet and well, it was really more my fault then theirs. Overall, the service is excellent, the food is usually plentiful but it's not "traditional" chinese food it's definitely americanized. When you go to a buffet that's usually what you're looking for though so none of this ceases to amaze me. Great price, great food, great times.

Had the buffet. Not really impressed. We need a good, solid Chinese Restaurant in SRQ in a bad way. Seriously, there is not one good Chinese restaurant in SRQ. Yep...NONE! Drive to Tampa...

We were very disappointed because the food used to be good but not anymore. Everything was luke warm at best and some items were cold. The food was bland and doughy tasting. The egg rolls, if that what they could be called, were small and the filling was mushy. Almost all the selections were variations of chicken. Most diners only visited the buffet once and left. Oh, be sure to look closely at your silverware and in your drinks. Don't waste your money here, steer clear because you will be disappointed.

When we first moved to the Bradenton/Sarasota area, I went in search of some good authentic Chinese food. Anything but take-out or buffets were on my list, so of course I tried Chen's. Needles to say, it is yet another buffet place where everything is covered in brown sauce. So sad!

I would give this five stars- but it's a buffet! You walk in and are greeted right away (generally there is a long wait for tables). Once you are seated- the server immediately greets you and gets your drink orders. You are then free to roam about the buffet. The quality, folks, I am telling you is top notch! Start with soup (only the soup and spring rolls contain MSG) then go to town with anything you want on the entrees. They use large Tiger shrimp (16-20 count) for shrimp dishes (they even had peel & eat shrimp the first time I went!). YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS PLACE! Service for a buffet is terrific and the food is perfect. Enjoy to your little hearts desire! Oh, I almost forgot: IT'S DIRT CHEAP! (Less than $10 per person) and parking is impossible during peak hours.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
