We visited Sanibel for a long weekend, and came to the Sanibel Cafe every single day of our trip, on one occasion multiple times! Extremely impressed by the food, atmosphere and friendly staff. Don't let the shopping center location fool you - this is THE place to go for breakfast or lunch on the island. Especially since I will eat breakfast food at any time of the day, and my husband would prefer a burger even at 8 am, this was perfect for us. Great pancakes, sausage gravy, and you HAVE to get the gator bites! I'm still craving them days later. Tried the key lime pie at other places that claimed to have the "best key lime pie on the island," but this definitely gets my vote. While you're there, be sure to check out the amazing shell tables and grab a jar of jam. Can't wait to go back!

Picked up an order to go. It took handing the phone off to three people to get it right. Said it would take about ten minutes and though I thought it was a little fast for what we ordered, I snagged it up anyway. Chicken fried steak was inedibly undercooked and there were eggshells in the egg. At minimum I'd say it was a little pricey for having to cook everything again at home in the microwave.

We rode our bikes 6 miles to get to Sanibel Cafe!! Bike rack available for our bikes....extremely cute shopping center as well!! Immediate seating for breakfast. Our server was friendly...the Canadian bacon eggs Benedict with grilled Parmesan tomatoes was AMAZING. My son had the country breakfast which included scrambled eggs, hash browns and biscuits and sausage gravy. My coffee never ran low and the restaurant was quaint and clean...no complaints.

My guest and I decided to eat at the Sanibel Cafe for breakfast after reading reviews on Yelp. We were seated almost immediately and greeted by what seemed like a friendly manager. The environment was family-oriented and comfortable. Our server was mostly attentive (although failed to refill my guest's lemonade) and had our meals out quickly. I ordered the stuffed stack of pancakes with strawberries and coconut (.75 cent upcharge for a second fruit was worth it!); they were so delicious I didn't need to add butter nor syrup. I wish they had more combinations available, as I would have loved this to be a complete breakfast with eggs and bacon. The side menu did not list what the cost would have been to add eggs nor bacon, but I imagined the two together would have turned my $8.50 pancakes into at least a $13 breakfast. The coffee was subpar and bitter; I would return, but would make sure to have coffee before leaving the hotel.

The Over Easy Café nearby had a long line so we drove up the street to come here- and are very glad we did. Food was great .Service was fast and courteous. We had both breakfast and lunch fare - super tasty club sandwich; great pancakes. Really just perfect little spot. I'm sure they are quite busy at peak breakfast time, so plan accordingly!

Off the main road into Sanibel and Captiva, this little cafe is welcoming and feels homie. The decor is late 80's with a seashell theme throughout. They serve breakfast all day and the breakfast quasadilla was terrific! The portion is late and filling.

This place was a really pleasant discovery in Sanibel island! We came here for breakfast, and I fell in love with the decoration of the place (take a look at the tables) and atmosphere, it`s not the typical touristic place unlike most of restaurants in the area. Food was very good, you have a lot of breakfast choices, for sweet lovers and for salty breakfast lovers, I decided to try both and I was not disappointed by any of them. One of the options has alligator, and it`s not the usual fried one, so you can really appreciate the true taste of gator, which is great! On the other hand, I had an unpleasant experience with one of the waitresses, she took my order wrongly, she didn`t listen to me when I explained what I wanted, and she was not so kind after that, but she might had just a bad day. Be sure to be very clear about what you order because it might be confusing (there are several things included in each menu). A highly recommended place if you stop by Sanibel island!

From now on every time I visit Sanibel I am coming here for dinner at least once. To start we had the freshest sushi I have ever had as an appetizer. We shared an order of the most delicious baby back ribs that slid right off the bone and the special of the day which was shrimp Mac and cheese. Every bite was more excellent than the one before it. The entire experience was outstanding.

Had lunch here after renting bikes. Small quaint place. I had shrimp salad wrap -very good! and hubby had fish Reuben- amazing! Might I mention the kids chicken tender basket was awesome. 3 huge tenders more like small breasts coated in corn flake coating. Really good. Daughter had m$m pancakes and loved those too. Would recommend for sure!!

Extremely mediocre diner, even by "beach food " standards. Quiche was runny egg pie over a rock-hard crust, with two pieces of processed American cheese half melted on top. Tasted as awful as it looked. Wife's French toast was undercooked and tasteless. Coffee was bitter and weak. Otherwise okay.

After falling victim to the indifferent quality-high cost of breakfast at our hotel for two mornings, my family and I went to Sanibel Cafe for the next three breakfasts of our stay. It's a lovely, unassuming little place with friendly waitstaff and a impressively number of breakfast options, both the standard items you'd expect to see in any American diner, and a few surprises. I had the pina colada french toast ($8) on two trips: it was absolutely fabulous: perfectly prepared french toast coated in coconut flakes and served with a pineapple marmalade with a bright, vibrant flavor. The third time we went, I had a stack of pancakes with my choice of fruit ($7). I picked raspberries and was pleasantly surprised to see that they didn't skimp at all, despite the fact that raspberries weren't remotely in season. The pancakes were also delicious. If you're currently suffering through overpriced hotel breakfasts or just want a delicious change of routine, I'd recommend checking it out.

We had breakfast here and it was awesome! We were in sanibel for the offseason so we didn't have to wait for much of anything which was nice. I think it was one of the best breakfasts we had while we there from content on the plate to the service. The also had these really cool fossilized shell situations in the tables that were awesome.

Love that they serve breakfast all day. Went to lunch here today (high season) with a party of 7+, and a group of 6 walked in before us. Without batting an eye, the hostess put some tables together and sat both large groups right away. Love how they didn't get flustered and were so accommodating. Fish sandwiches are excellent!

Very surprised at the poor reviews for this place as I thought it was excellent. Every item ordered by our party of four was delicious and the prices were reasonable, especially when you consider the location on a vacation destination. I had the breakfast quesadilla, which was humongous and came with generous portions of sour cream, guacamole, and a tasty salsa that I regrettably didn't pay much attention to until the end of the meal. My dad had the shrimp salad wrap, which is something I would normally avoid but it turned out to be possibly the best part of the meal. Rather than the usual tiny shrimp swimming in goopy mayo, the cafe uses full-sized shrimp in a light, creamy dill sauce. Oh, and I almost forgot, but we got an order of the French toast trio to share. While the crunchy version was later outdone at a different spot, all three varieties (crunch, coconut, and almond) were quite tasty. We appear to have had the server described by others who was indeed sassy but also very attentive and helpful. This place comes with my top recommendation for anyone on Sanibel.

Holy shrimp omelette, batman! I can't say that I had any bad food the entire time I was in Florida, but this was my first meal off the plane. The prices were great for the huge portions, everything was fresh and delicious, and it reminds me of one of those cozy mom & pop cafes that you can usually find in beach towns. They also had their own jam that I believe was made in house that was to die for! We gorged ourselves on shrimp omelettes and then drove down to the beach to have food coma. I love you Gulf Coast island Florida!

i usually make my own breakfast when i'm here on the island, but groupon provided me with a good reason for a visit. great service, friendly, attentive, refills on drinks without asking, checked in at appropriate times to see if everything was good. i went for breakfast. started with oatmeal. tasty, with raisins and brown sugar for $3. the greek omelet was full of fresh ingredients. perfecly cooked spinach, tomatoes and onions, with more veggies and cheese on top. the hash browns were delicious. many places have hash browns but can be just dull and bland. these were from a great tasting type of potato. they were buttery tasting without being greasy. with a choice of toasts, english muffin, and pancakes, i went for the pancakes, which were fluffy but dense, perfect. a big tasty meal for a reasonable 8.99. a lot of good choices on sanibel for breakfast and this place is up there with the best. and seeing as you're already in paradise, all of this is gravy. though i had no gravy.

Had breakfast at this little place Memorial day weekend. The place is small but makes a great Spinach & Mushroom omelet. They make home made jam. The raspberry was awesome. Not sure if they have air conditioning, but the ceiling fans just wasnt doing it...Boy was it hot in there.

When we walked into this unassuming little cafe hidden in the corner of shopping center and saw senior citizens at every table, chatting with the waitress like old friends I felt pretty sure we had made a good decision. The service was friendly and comfortable, and the food was great. I had a veggie omelet stuffed with fresh, well cooked, but not overcooked veggies and cheese. The potatoes were crispy and perfectly browned. The french toast looked amazing....would definitely want to check it out if I make a return trip. As far as prices go on Sanibel, this place is an awesome value. Definitely our cheapest and possibly best meal there.

My wife enjoyed a very tasty and well presented omelette with hash browns. Decent service, somewhat dated decor, but great food. My wife and I had a late breakfast here while vacationing in Sanibel. I ordered the coconut French Toast while my wife preferred the Almond French Toast. We ended up sharing so wet each ate 1/2 of both and they were both delicious. We also ordered a side of sausage which was perfectly done. I like my breakfast with maple syrup but my wife requested a side of the "Orange sauce" she had read about on Yelp. The sauce we got was more pineapple than Orange and was hot (temperature) so I did not like it at all. My wife was disappointed but not as much as I was. The meal itself was awesome and our waitress was amazing too - an EMT currently studying to be a Paramedic and also looking to go to fire school. As someone who lives in an area where the fire and ambulance crews are mostly volunteer I couldn't help but appreciate this young woman working too devote her life to saving others.

Very tasty "diner" breakfast! I ordered the philly cheesesteak omelet and my husband ordered the biscuits and gravy with eggs and a side of bacon. We ate at another little diner in town the day before and I had to say that The Sanibel Cafe's gravy is the best we had in Sanibel! Very flavorful and creamy! The meal was simply great - would definitely recommend to any one!

We hit the Sanibel Cafe for breakfast on our way out of town after a lovely week in Sanibel. We thought it was much better than another local breakfast joint we started our week with and wished we'd tried it sooner! Our server, Bonnie I think her name was, was so sweet and energetic, and gave great food recommendations. I had the breakfast quesadilla, which was delish, nice and crispy and loaded with eggs, bacon, salsa, cheese and hash browns. I love breakfast quesadillas and this was one of the best I've had. The kids loved the pancakes and fruit cups, and others enjoyed the french toast trio which looked really good. It's a tiny place so it'd be hard to fit in a party larger than six. The atmosphere is kind of old fashioned, like your grandma decorated it.

I wasn't wild about my breakfast. I had the 2 egg special, which is pretty simple to make but even that wasn't done right. I ordered over easy and they were just about over hard and an order of bacon is only 2 slices which equates to $1.00 per slice. Not good.

Wonderful breakfast at Sanibel Cafe. Asked the waitress what to order - she suggested the coconut French toast. She didn't steer me wrong ... it was a huge portion of delicious French toast encrusted in coconut. I spread some of their homemade raspberry jam on it and that was fantastic, too! Everything here is delicious and its a great local institution. First stop on the island is always a trip to the Sanibel Cafe to eat the Rusty Pelican sandwich. That sandwich is heaven on earth - don't miss out!!!

Terrible service and mediocre food. My family and I went for breakfast. My little one ordered the M&M pancakes. She nor I anticipated it to be pancakes with M&M's sprinkled on top. We thought they'd be inside the pancake. I ordered eggs benedict and it was terrible. They first asked me if I wanted it soft or medium. I always get this at restaurants and this is then first time I've been asked this. I wanted a runny yolk so I said soft. I got a runny yolk and runny white egg. I almost threw up. The waitress returned it and came back with a medium. It was better, still runny white egg, but at least edible to a point. It came with burnt corned beef hash. My other daughter got hard fruit in her fruit salad and my husband seemed relatively happy with this country fried steak. The waitress barely spoke English, yet was rude enough when I asked for the eggs to be cooked more. She wouldn't even look at me when she gave me the check. I can understand if I caused a scene, but I just asked politely for the eggs to be cooked longer. They don't know how to make eggs benedict and should remove it from their menu until they know how to cook it. Never will we return here.

Lived up to the hype...I had the cafe waffle supreme with thick cut bone-in ham & my wife had the French toast trio - both were excellent. We each had a side of bacon and was very relieved that it was crispy as good bacon should be. Great and attentive service sealed the deal.

After having been up since the middle of the night chasing low tide for shells, it was high time for a hearty breakfast. I loved everything about this place, from the (actually) artistic shell-themed table art to the comfortable booths to the diverse and well-priced menu. I ordered a Philly cheesesteak omelette; the omelette was unburnt, fluffy and beautiful to look at. You really get a feeling that everything is made with fresh ingredients. Delicious jam for the toast - it has a nice thick even texture. The coffee was meh but it was frequently refilled! Our waitress showed just the right level of attentiveness, and she was cheerful with a sense of humor. I'm reluctant to be publicly age-ist, but while vacationing in this retiree-heavy area, the fact that she was also young definitely factored into our comfort here. If I ever return to Sanibel, I will make a beeline for The Sanibel Cafe.

Was quite disappointed considering the inexplicable great reviews. First we are served the worst coffee we have ever tasted. Then we watched for over 40 minutes as food was put out on the counters with all of the waitresses and what we assume are the owners walking back and forth past the food sitting & getting cold. We watched as our breakfast sat on the counter while the cook kept on putting out food for other tables. They actually went to serve us cold eggs and French toast, it was unbelievable. The waitress apologized & offered to put the order in again but was oblivious to what was wrong; we couldn't possibly stay another 40+ Minutes for more bad coffee, cold food and the cook givings us dirty looks for their incompetence.

We discovered this place just recently. We have been going to Sanibel/Captiva for years and this was the first time we tried this place. We usually don't go out for breakfast when we are there but we decided to try it on the way out of town. A big down side for me was it is extremely tiny! They gave a table right by the door but it was very hot from people opening and closing the door. We asked to move tables and they accommodated us right away. It took a little while for the food to come but once we got it, we were totally satisfied! I had an omelet and it was delicious. I think the best part was their raspberry jelly they make. I'm usually a strawberry jelly fan so I was skeptical, but after trying it, we each bought a jar to take home. It is very good, the food is great, the waitress was super sweet! I think there was only 2 waitresses working. Like I said, its very small. If you are looking for a great breakfast place, I would definitely try going here. I'm not sure what lunch is like, but I will go back for breakfast!

Service was friendly and super quick despite the line to be seated. Coffee was a generous pour but below average -- my husband poured his out on our way back to the car (have never seen him do this, in rest stops etc). Cafe decor was cute. Priced reasonably.

Before heading home from a mini vacation we had breakfast here. The food was good my husband had the Philly omelet and I had the french toast , which was big enough to feed two. The French toast was a bit undercooked but nevertheless it was good and tasty. The homemade jam is awesome. I bought one to take home .

Diners - they are awesome! Since this diner is in Sanibel I crown it super awesome! Breakfast is my favorite meal when I am on travel. I have a big one because I tend to skip lunch. The pancakes here are so yummy, eggs and I need to eat piggly wiggly - it's not breakfast if you don't have bacon. A small oj with a small coffee for drinks and you're set for the day. The severs here are so friendly my teeth hurt - such sweet people. They are kind to all patrons. They don't pull the overly perky act - they are just normal. Weird huh? Yes Sanibel is paradise - everyone is kind in paradise. It's refreshing to know diners like these are still around - I just have to go 1,000 miles south to get there.

"These pancakes are heaven." Such was the determination of our 8yr old as she devoured her order of pancakes. Our 9yr old felt similarly about the French toast, and the sentiment accurately captured the opinion of our entire group. The food at this little restaurant in a strip mall was very well done. I had the shrimp salad croisandwich, which was fresh and delicious. It had a bit of crunch from onion and celery that made it very good. My wife had the veggie burger with grilled onions and mushrooms, and she thought it was excellent. My mother-in-law had the bone-in ham steak and egg, and she said the eggs were the best she'd had in years. In all the food and experience, including a very friendly waitress, was exceptional.

Basic diner food made with low quality and instant ingredients served by a very sweet and energetic staff who seemed embarrassed by what the restaurant had to offer. I ordered the waffle which came out a bit cold and rubbery, but I was starving so I scarfed it all up. I'm glad I asked about the syrup situation when I ordered (fake maple Log Cabin) and requested honey instead. The "unsweetened" coconut flakes I added on top were very much sweetened to my dismay. My grits were instant and watery, completely unseasoned. I know people say Florida isn't "the South" but if you're going to serve grits down here, you better make them fresh and good. My wife's huevos rancheros were more like chilaquiles, served over chips rather than tortillas and with salsa / pico de gallo instead of ranchero sauce. (Just be forewarned if you don't want chips for breakfast and were looking forward to ranchero with your huevos.) The pico de gallo had a packaged seasoning taste and very mealy tomatoes. Her side of hashbrowns were swimming in grease and were also very stale. A disappointing final meal for our vacation. We stopped by Bennet's donuts afterwards just so we didn't leave Sanibel with a bad taste on our mouths. Stars for the sweet staff!

We enjoyed our first lunch here so much that we came back a second time during our vacation. We thought the grilled Parmesan tomatoes were a great side option instead of the expected fries (but we tried the fries too and they were good). I fell in love with their chicken and grape salad, which I had as a wrap. It sounds like such a simple thing, but a good chicken salad can be hard to find, and the grapes were a great addition. My husband had various fish sandwiches in our visits, and found them to be quite tasty and fresh. On one trip we couldn't resist and ordered the mini corn dogs as an app, and they were yummy and adorable. Service was casual and friendly, and I always like finding a place that greets its regular patrons so warmly. We look forward to visiting Sanibel again and will definitely make another stop at the Sanibel Cafe!

It's a diner. Standard breakfast. I had poached eggs (oddly made in a mold) with toast. Subbed the potatoes for grilled tomatoes. Meat options: sausage, bacon or sliced ham ("sliced in-house!" I was told; a fine change of pace. Omelets are made on the flat top (griddle) not made in a pan, French style. I don't like those because the eggs are then invariably overcooked to rubber with fillings and we are overcharged. I felt it was better value than Over Easy Cafe.

Florentine Benedict was great! Real poached eggs, fresh sautéed spinach and fresh muffin - I was going to lick the plate but thought better of it.... Yum!

This is the place in Tahitian Gardens with the fossilized shell tables which is pretty cool in itself. We ate here twice for breakfast, and truthfully, I've had better, but I will say, it's just okay. Just had the standard eggs/sausage/grits & potatoes. Husband says potatoes are greasy so stay away ~ other than that, I think there may be better choices for breakfast than here.

A great family run (?) cafe in the heart of Sanibel Island. There were two waitresses on duty at lunch time and it was more than sufficient to give good service. I had the Rusty Pelican (turkey/havarti ++ on a croissant) that was fabulous ~ would have to say the fries were oversalted which just saved calories. My friend had a cobb salad that was more than enough for one person (we brought half home). Prices were more than reasonable, and if you want to "eat local" I would eat there again for a casual lunch! They also say they serve breakfast all day so if thats what your looking for you found it!

We are here for lunch, I had the shrimp salad on a croissant and my husband had a burger both were good. Fries hot and tasty. We heard so many folks commenting about the wonderful pot roast but they only serve it for dinner and we left the island before dinner as the traffic was bruttal. Service was fast and friendly. We will got back for the pot roast!

We stopped in for lunch and the food was so good we went back for lunch the next day. My wife had the Blackened Chicken Sandwich both days and I had the Crunchy Fish Sandwich (which is coated in cornflakes) and the Blackened Fish Sandwich. The kids ordered from the children's menu and had a burger and a hotdog, and the second day corndogs and the M & M pancakes. Everyone loved the food and the fish and chicken that came on the sandwiches hung over the bun in all directions. My wife and I also opted for the Parmesan Grilled Tomatoes as our sides which were great. The owners daughter was our server and she was very nice and she introduced us to the owner, "Dad". She yelled out to, "Hey Dad, waive hello" so we waived back and said "Hi, Dad". Our kids were wondering why the kid's meals all had people's names associated with them so our server explained that they were all names of the family children or children of people who worked there. It is a small diner atmosphere with unique glass top tables with sea shell designs in them created by a local artist just for the Sanibel Café. We recommend stopping in and tying it out but get there early as they close at 2:30. Next trip we will have to try their breakfast as a lot of the menu items sounded good.

Fantastic service ! This place is so cute and homey. We were a huge party of 11 and there was no wait which was fantastic. The food.....awesome. We had the eggs Benedict with crab cakes and it was so yummy! Also the crunchy french toast was delicious! Good food and good prices!

I just don't get the good reviews about this place. We actually decided to try it based on other reviews, but I'm sorry we did. The service was terrible, but of course, I can deal with that if the food is good. Sadly, it wasn't. It was mediocre diner food at best. The sweet tea is instant. I mean, who even uses instant tea anymore?? The fries were so salty we didn't even eat them. And we like salt! There was a table of 5 next to us and they left with most of the food still on their plates, so we are assuming they were having the same experience as us. Just not a good breakfast/lunch spot whatsoever. Skip it and save yourself the disappointment. And oh yeah, it was really hot in there! Ceiling fans just don't cut it with Florida summer temps. :(

The Sanibel Cafe is a must-go-to restaurant if you are vacationing nearby in Sanibel, Captiva, or even the Fort Myers area. It's a lovely restaurant with great food. Breakfast is served until early afternoon (big plus on my rating scale) and they make an awesome and very fresh breakfast. The tables in the restaurant are all glass covered displays of real sea shells, mostly fossilized, very beautifully arrayed in geometric designs, no two table exactly the same. I love the waffles and pancakes, my husband loves the corned beef hash. The staff is both friendly and efficient. They make their own berry spread that is delish and you can buy a jar to take home to whomever is taking care of your pets while you are gone ;) They serve more than just breakfast, of course, and the menu is diverse and likely to satisfy most everyone. Popular with the locals, so you know it's good.

Went with my husband and two little kiddies. My husbands and I both ordered the "new" huevos rancheros and we were extremely disappointed. The dish was basically two eggs over two large, fried pieces of tortilla, with a side of salsa, which is not what huevos rancheros is. I wish I had taken a picture of our disappointing dish! Our sever was sub par...didn't talk to us, ask us about our food. The only redeeming factor about this place was after I talked to the girl at the front, she took off my dish from our bill.

This is one of my favorite places for breakfast. General breakfast menu but there are some island twist. The service is efficient, the coffee is fresh, and the food is out in a fairly prompt amount of time. The portions are just right. I hate feeling like I need to be wheeled around the rest of the morning. The eggs are never watery and the hash browns are always perfect. They're located at the inner corner of a strip mall so you have to keep an eye out.

Sanibel Café - A must go! I love breakfast anytime of the day and we grabbed brunch on a Sunday. There was a wait and its now wonder, you should wait for the great food! Great prices too. It's like a mom and pop place and I wish we had them where we live. There is a great little store right next door (and more ) that most everyone walked out with something from their visit. A must go!

Solidity mediocre. Caesar salad was Romaine lettuce and huge chunks of slightly overcooked chicken. Obviously rushed out. Had to ask for cheese and dressing just to make it an actual salad. I finished my prep by cutting the chicken into bitesize pieces. I would highly recommend this place for the "do it yourself" crowd.
