Where else can you grab a pretty kick ass burger and beer in a really cool old-Florida house with Dollar Bills on the wall, a real, Genuine, Florida-Cracker Bartender with more stories than Mother Goose, and walk/hike around a shell mound island with an observation tower that gives you an amazing view of Pine Island Sound and the Palm Trees and everything else we love about the West Coast of Florida? All of this after a scenic 45 minute boat ride just to get there? Cabbage Key is an institution, and for very good reason. This is Old Florida living at its best, and we are lucky to be able to catch a small glimpse of that lifestyle. A good mix of Locals and Tourists (though you'll find the locals mainly at the bar) a locally-flavored menu, scenic wooden buildings and hiking trails filled with native flora, and a good dose of Florida History all await you. I sound like a Tourist Magazine now, so I'll stop. Suffice to say it's well worth the trip, and then some.

See check in Mediocrity rules the dinibg room and staff, but they do it with a smile on their faces, Stepford vibe notwithstanding

We drove up with the boat and saw this place from the water. It's beautiful and very unique. Ordered a little bit of everything. The salmon and the burger were the favorites! They are great for large groups and the staff was really friendly. Plenty of space to park the boat and staff to help you park and dock it.

This place was awesome!!! We were vacationing in Boca Grande and boated over here. My boyfriends family has been coming here for over 20 years. Even though this was my first visit I left having the same affection they shared for this island gem. I had the fish salad (see uploaded pic) and it was delicious- especially the dressing. I also tried a bite of the Reuben and it was yum! My favorite part of course was that the entire place is coated and I mean coated in money! Very fun

My wife and I and some friends stayed 2 nights at the Cabbage Key Historic Inn (rooms in the same building as the restaurant) in mid March 2012. We tried to reserve a cottage, but they were booked-up, so we settled for a couple of rooms in the lodge. We had several meals in the restaurant (which I give 4 stars). Their specialty is definitely seafood. To set expectations: If you arrive during the lunch hour in peak season, expect to share the restaurant with mobs of fellow tourists who've disembarked from a couple of large ferries that run daily out to the island. The water is not free: It's available only in bottles for $2.50 each. One bad experience: My wife bought a cup of coffee, which was served in a cup with bright pink lipstick stains on the rim. The replacement cup had dried food on the rim. So she finally just asked for a styrofoam cup. Regarding the rooms (which I give 3 stars): They were clean, spacious, and tastefully decorated. Unfortunately we had no control over the temperature (no thermostat in the room, and the windows couldn't be opened). During the day the room temp was just fine for us, but we like to sleep cooler at night. Also, our room (#6) faced onto the restaurant's outdoor patio on 2 sides, which was loud during lunch and problematic the second night when a large family group staying at one of the cottages, decided to party on the patio right outside our windows. Our friends in room 5 had a private screened porch which was very nice; but they mentioned they could clearly hear the kitchen noise. Both rooms could hear the conversations/laughter/music from the bar/restaurant until 10pm. So if you want a quiet(er) room, be sure to mention that when making your reservations. If you go, make a point to spend some time sitting on the dock, watching DockMaster Jeff work his magic with directing boats of all sizes into and out of the marina. Also, be aware that Jeff has available for rent a couple of tandem kayaks and a couple of motorized skiffs, for reasonable rates. Jeff can tell you how you can use them to go over to Cayo Costa and enjoy the Gulf-side beach.

Truly a "not to be missed" destination spot for lunch or dinner by boat. This tiny little island is family friendly and loads of fun. Garnished with thousands and thousands of dollar bills hanging from every square inch of exposed space, this is a fun way to leave a note behind proving that you have dined there. Plus, the money is donated to charity from time to time. For lunch, I had the cheeseburger, slaw and a shared piece of key lime pie. The boiled shrimp are great as are the beans and rice. NO FRIES... so don't look dumb and ask. The smoked salmon is made on site and ROCKS!! Dinner is another matter all together.... From cheese burgers to gourmet dining! WOW!!! Truly delicious. Great service and fantastic dock master. Really cool servers and super bar. Try the CABBAGE CREEPER!!! It will make you smile... A lot! Oh, and if you forget your flip flops on the boat, they have loaners! Enjoy!!

The address is misleading. This inn and restaurant is on an island that is not reachable by car. You must take a boat, helicopter or sea plane. They have their own small marina and several cabins and rooms for rent. All looked beautiful and newly renovated but I would imagine the rooms in the inn would be annoying during the weekends when the place is packed. We rented a boat at Boca Grande Island and made the trip for lunch. The isolation and the fact that it is reachable only by boat make it special. The inn is built on top of an Indian mound on the island which is unique as it is about 30 feet above sea level, a veritable Mount Everest on the coast of Florida. This gives the front patio a great vantage point of the intracoastal waterway and the boat traffic. The inn has a great old pine paneled bar and a back patio that is covered in thousands (70-80,000) of dollar bills that have been left by the patrons. The food at the restaurant was fair but who cares. We had the stone crabs and a salad. Once again the stone crabs were only fair but really fresh as this is the water that they come from. The salad was serviceable, but the beer was really cold. (The burgers looked good but I am not taking my chances with ground meet these days unless I know where it came from.) It was a great afternoon on the water and would probably make a great getaway for a day or two, midweek.

Really cool place! Built in 1929 it still maintains that tropicalopen-air beach shack feel. The mahi sandwich was simple but delicious and the fact that it's only reachable boat was awesome too!

10/1/11. I went here about10 years ago with my wife's parents when we were here visiting. I had a cheeseburger - what else as the place is right out of the song. Don't remember if it was any good, but who care. This is one of the unique places ib this part of the world. I am glad it it still open. A must see experience!

low-key fun and tasty food. definitely go with bottled water rather than the tap (which was a bit salty).

Once you figure out how to get there (it's a beautiful sunset boat ride out), the food and service is worth the trip. The atmosphere alone is worth it (be creative!)
